The article presents a report from the 2011 to 2016 annual meetings of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) Continuing Education Committee (CEC). Topics discussed include the mission of the SAGES, learning theme and anticipated practice change data collection, and anticipated practice changes and their implementation.

Objective: The SAGES Mini Med School (SMMS) was designed to expose high school students to the field of surgery through mentoring, knowledge transfer, and hands-on experience with simulation. The objective of this paper is to profile the evolutionary development, performance metrics, and satisfaction queries of this innovative effort.Methods: Sixty-one high school students, grades 9-12, took part in the (SMMS) program during the 2015 SAGES Annual Congress. The students completed a surgical skills lab session where they attempted tasks associated with the development of open surgical and laparoscopic skills. The lab included a warm-up with the validated Super Monkey Ball video game, Top Gun Pea Drop task, FLS Peg Transfer task, open knot tying station, and open instrument tie station.Results: The following are the results of the surgical skills lab. For the Super Monkey Ball task, 60 students participated with an average score of 73.0 s (SD = 53.9; range 59.1-87.0; median = 74). Sixty students participated in the Surgeons Knot and Pea Drop tasks with average times of 26.6 s (SD = 19.3; range 21.7-31.6; median = 21.0) and 113.8 s (SD = 65.9; range 96.6-131.0; median = 101.0), respectively. Sixty students participated in the Instrument Tie and 56 students participated in the Peg Transfer stations with average times of 51.7 s (SD = 34.5; range 42.8-60.6; median = 39.5) and 173.1 s (SD = 25.0; range 166.4-179.8; median = 180.0), respectively. 51 (83.6%) agreed that the Mini Med School made them more likely to consider a career in medicine. When asked if the program made them more likely to consider a career in surgery 42 (68.8%) agreed. All 61 respondents (100%) said that they would recommend the program to others.Conclusions: The SMMS program showed that the students had an excellent aptitude for the performance of validated surgical subtasks with high satisfaction, and increased consideration of a career in medicine/surgery. Background: During the 2004 annual meeting of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), a panel of experts convened to provide updated information on best practices in bariatric surgery. The rapid evolution of endoluminal technologies, surgical indications, and training in bariatric surgery since 2004 has led to new questions and concerns about optimal treatment algorithms, patient selection, and the preparation of our current and future bariatric workforce.Methods: An expert panel was convened at the SAGES 2017 annual meeting to provide a summative update on current practice patterns, techniques, and training in bariatric surgery in order to review and establish best practices. This was a joint effort by SAGES, International Society for the Perioperative Care of the Obese Patient, and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.Results: On March 23, 2017, seven expert faculty convened to address current areas of controversy in bariatric surgery and provide updated guidelines and practice recommendations. Areas addressed included the expanded indications for use of metabolic surgery in the treatment of diabetes, the safety and efficacy of new and investigational endoluminal procedures, updates on new guidelines for the management of airway and sleep apnea in the obese patient, the development of clinical pathways to reduce variation in the management of the bariatric patient, and new guidelines for training, credentialing, and bariatric program accreditation. The following article is a summary of this panel.Conclusion: Bariatric surgery is a field that continues to evolve. A timely, systematic approach, such as described here, that coalesces data and establishes best practices on the current body of available evidence is imperative for optimal patient care and to inform provider, insurer, and policy decisions. The article presents the text of an address given by the president of the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons (IAES) at the 47th World Congress of Surgery, 2017 in Basel, Switzerland. Topics of the speech include the establishment of the International Surgical Society in 1902, the formation of the IAES in 1979, and the Peer Support Program of the Association. The role of endocrine surgeons is also discussed.

Background: The failure of investigators to publish research in peer-reviewed journals following acceptance at a national or international meeting can lead to significant publication biases in the literature. Our objective was to evaluate the abstract to manuscript conversion rate for abstracts presented at the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery (CSVS) annual meeting and to evaluate the conversion rate for CSVS-awarded research grants. Methods: We searched for authors of abstracts accepted at the CSVS Annual Meeting (2007-2013) and recipients of CSVS research awards (2005-2013) on Scopus and PubMed databases to identify related publications. Results: We identified 84 publications from 188 research abstracts (45%) and 17 publications from 39 research grants (44%). The mean time to publication was 1.8 years and the mean impact factor was 2.7. Studies related to endovascular therapies demonstrated a trend toward a higher rate of publication relative to open surgical therapies (64 [56%] v. 37 [27%]). Additionally, we observed a similar trend in research grant topics related to endovascular therapies relative to open surgical therapies (9 [67%] v. 8 [38%]). Finally, CSVS research grant recipients who subsequently published had a significantly higher h-index at the time of receipt than those who had not published. Conclusion: The CSVS annual meeting's abstract to publication conversion rate is comparable to that of its Canadian peers as well as to other medical specialties; however, a substantial publication gap remains. This article examines how the dental and surgical communities treating facial injuries during the First World War used photography for scientific education, to exchange, debate, and disseminate methods and ideas on facial reconstruction. Following the turn to practices, materials, and networks of knowledge in recent photographic history, this article explores how photographs enabled surgeons to identify, recognize, and accurately assess a range of facial injuries and surgical procedures and allowed surgeons to think about their practice and methods of treatment, and then critique courses of action within the larger group. To determine the specific role played by photographs in shaping networks of knowledge and interrelationships between medical societies, the article will explore how groups of surgeons used photographs at meetings, lectures and in medical journals to communicate facts about facial injuries to the wider surgical profession. Photography was part of the flow of information within the scientific exchange system. Within the context of surgical lectures and meetings held at the Royal Society of Medicine and Royal College of Surgeons by the British Dental and Medical Associations between 1914 and 1920, photography increasingly played a part in framing interaction between groups of surgeons, including Franco-British exchanges. In conclusion, this article argues that photographs became active performers in the dissemination of surgical knowledge and meaning on facial reconstructive surgery during the First World War and were integral in the shaping of medical thinking. This article narrates a multifaceted educational journey undertaken by a medical student through a weekly SCRAPS (surgery, clinical disciplines, radiology, anatomy, psychiatry and laboratory sciences) clinicopathological meeting held in the College of Medicine & Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, Oman. Through a presentation titled 'Unveiling Cancer', the multidisciplinary and interprofessional audience witnessed a simulated interaction between a medical student, a technologist peer and tutors in medicine, pathology and radiology. The presentation was based on the complexities of presentation, diagnosis and management of a patient with anaplastic large cell lymphoma, a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, in the aftermath of a bone marrow transplantation. After describing the case, the student shared with the audience a spectrum of learning objectives, which included integration in the complex world of contemporary medicine, insight into the triumphs and travails of technology (immunohistochemistry) and peer collaboration, communication and mentorship. The article presents a speech by university professor David R. Antonenko, delivered at the annual meeting of the Southwestern Surgical Congress held in 2013. He discussed the problems and complications related to surgical patients and mentions that a direct correlation between hyponatremia, surgical morbidity and mortality is present. He also gave an example of the book "A Century of Surgeons and Surgery," that was published about the history of the American College of Surgeons.

Background: Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) certification testing currently is offered at accredited test centers or at select surgical conferences. Maintaining these test centers requires considerable investment in human and financial resources. Additionally, it can be challenging for individuals outside North America to become FLS certified. The objective of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility of remotely administering and scoring the FLS examination using live videoconferencing compared with standard onsite testing. Methods: This parallel mixed-methods study used both FLS scoring data and participant feedback to determine the barriers to feasibility of remote proctoring for the FLS examination. Participants were tested at two accredited FLS testing centers. An official FLS proctor administered and scored the FLS exam remotely while another onsite proctor provided a live score of participants' performance. Participant feedback was collected during testing. Interrater reliabilities of onsite and remote FLS scoring data were compared using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Participant feedback was analyzed using modified grounded theory to identify themes for barriers to feasibility. Results: The scores of the remote and onsite proctors showed excellent interrater reliability in the total FLS (ICC 0.995, CI [0.985-0.998]). Several barriers led to critical errors in remote scoring, but most were accompanied by a solution incorporated into the study protocol. The most common barrier was the chain of custody for exam accessories. Conclusion: The results of this pilot study suggest that remote administration of the FLS has the potential to decrease costs without altering test-taker scores or exam validity. Further research is required to validate protocols for remote and onsite proctors and to direct execution of these protocols in a controlled environment identical to current FLS test administration. Purpose: The laparoscopic treatment of ventral incisional hernias is the object of constant attention and is becoming increasingly widespread in the international scientific-surgical community; however, there is ample debate on its technical details and indications. In order to establish a common approach on laparoscopic ventral incisional hernia repair, the first Italian Consensus Conference was organized in Naples (Italy) on 14-15 January 2010. Methods: The format of the Consensus Conference was freely adapted from the standards of the National Institute of Health and the Italian Health Institute. The parties involved included the followings: a Promotional Committee, a Scientific Committee, a group of Experts, the Jury Panel and a Scientific Secretariat. Results: Eleven statements, regarding three large chapters on the indications, the technical details and the management of complications were drafted on the basis of literature references collected by the Scientific Committee, documents developed by the Experts, reports presented and discussed during the Consensus Conference, and discussion among the members of the Jury. Conclusions: The laparoscopic approach is safe and effective for defects larger than 3 cm in diameter; old age, obesity, previous abdominal operations, recurrence and strangulation are not absolute contraindications. Ensuring an adequate overlap, careful adhesiolysis and correct fixing of the prosthesis are among the technical details recommended. Abstract: The Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT) is a professional body and registered charity working to promote excellence in surgical training for the benefit of junior doctors and patients alike. With a membership of over 2000 surgical trainees from all ten surgical specialities, the association provides support at both regional and national levels throughout the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. Originally founded in 1976, ASiT is independent of the National Health Service (NHS), Surgical Royal Colleges, and speciality associations. The 2012 Annual Conference in Cardiff City Hall brought together nearly 700 delegates for an educational weekend programme with expert guest speakers. Clinical updates were complimented by debates on current training in surgery, and the weekend included 6 pre-conference courses covering a diverse range of topics including laparoscopic skills, surgical drawing and a masterclass in journal club. A record number of 1168 abstract submissions were received and those successful competed for 18 awards representing £3500 in trainee prizes and bursaries. As the only national surgical trainee meeting for all specialities, ASiT continues to grow and we look forward to an even larger and more successful conference next year. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Background: Surgical peer review might be characterized by assessment heterogeneity. Methods: We performed a prospective, anonymous, peer review of surgeon and system performance during a morbidity and mortality conference. Results: Twenty-two cases were reviewed by a mean of 48.9 respondents each, including attendings, fellows, and residents. A mean of 50% (standard deviation, 23%) of respondents identified some quality issue in each case, reflecting high heterogeneity. The mean percentage in identifying a system issue was 27%, and in identifying a physician issue was 37%. When identifying a physician issue, physician care was judged as appropriate by 72%, as controversial by 26%, or as inappropriate by 2%. Residents were more likely than attendings to identify system issues (odds ratio, 2.23) and physician issues (odds ratio, 3.58), but attendings were more likely to rate care controversial or inappropriate (odds ratio, 2.53). Conclusions: Surgical peer reviews, even after group discussion, display substantial heterogeneity. Review methods should account for this heterogeneity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Oncoplastic surgery is the seamless joining of the extirpative and reconstructive aspects of breast surgery that is performed by a single surgeon. A symposium was held at ISW 2007 in Montreal with a prearranged aim to publish an article on the current and historical record of the developing specialty of oncoplastic breast surgery. Topics include the effects of twenty-four hour drinking on dentofacial trauma, management of bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis, and educational intervention on local oral surgery services. It also featured the winners of oral surgery competition including Kushal Gadhia, Harlene Kaur Ramewal, and Carla Fleming.

Information about the Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery Meeting held on Sept 29-30, 2006 in Calgary, Alberta is presented. The meeting focused on the vistafin, a peptide that is a highly expressed in diabetic patients. It also focused on the screening for abdominal aortic and aneurysms in men. It also looked in the improved survival post-introduction of emergency endovascular protocol for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms.
