Objective To evaluate the value of 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in preoperative assessment of cervical cancer in the early-middle stage. Methods A total of 53 patients with cervical cancer in the early-middle stage in Affiliated Hospital of Jiangsu University from January 2008 to June 2014 were selected, which were conducted by MRI routine scan and enhanced scanning, MRI staging and lymphatic metastasis judging. The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging was performed according to clinicopathological information. The reliability of MRI staging and lymphatic metastasis judging on cancer was compared with FIGO and postoperative pathologic results, which were used as gold standard. Results It was suspected Ia in 5 cases, Ib in 22 cases, IIa in 22 cases, IIb in 4 cases by preoperative MRI staging, while Ia in 6 cases, Ib in 23 cases, IIa in 21 cases, IIb in 3 cases diagnosed by FIGO stage. There was no statistically significant difference between MRI staging and FIGO(P>0.05). 38 of 51 lymph node metastasis suspected by MRI was confirmed pathologically. It was also found 11 metastasis lymph nodes pathologically while MRI failed to detect, which had no statistically significant difference between them (P>0.05). Conclusion MRI may make more accurate evaluation to staging and lymph node metastasis of cervical cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive malignant disease. Owing to the lack of early symptoms, accompanied by extensive metastasis and high resistance to chemotherapy, pancreatic adenocarcinoma becomes the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths. In this study, we identified a subpopulation of cells isolated from the Panc-1 cell line and named pancreatic cancer stem-like cells. These Panc-1 stem-like cells expressed high levels of CD133/CD44/Oct4/Nestin. Compared to Panc-1 cells, Panc-1 stem-like cells were resistant to gemcitabine and expressed high levels of MDR1; furthermore, Panc-1 stem-like cells have high anti-apoptotic, but weak proliferative potential. These results indicated that Panc-1 stem-like cells, as a novel group, may be a potential major cause of pancreatic cancer multidrug resistance and extensive metastasis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Background: The hippocampus and amygdala exhibit structural and functional alterations in patients with depression. The objective of this study was to investigate the structural and functional relationships between these core regions., Methods: Based on the severity of their condition, 60 patients and 20 healthy controls were equally divided into four groups (mild group, moderate group, major group and health controls group), scanned by T1-MR, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI). Structural image, BOLD image, and SWI image were collected for processing and analysis. The characteristics of the depression and controls were checked by analysis of variance test, and the difference between groups was checked by Dunnett's test., Results: The volume of hippocampus and amygdala varied with the severity of the condition. The signal obtained under the stimulation of negative events was linearly decreased in the mild, moderate and major groups revealed by fMRI. The length and diameter of the lateral ventricle vein was reduced in the mild group, whereas the number of branches increased. In the moderate and major groups, the reduction in the length, diameter and increase in the number of branches of the lateral ventricle vein were greater., Conclusion: The alterations of the volume, fMRI, and cerebral veins in these core regions may account for the causal relationship between structure and function.
