The article focuses on the emergence of conservation areas in Great Britain and discusses its impact on the regional planning of the area. The three principal objectives of the conservation movement are mentioned. These goals are the preservation of aesthetically valuable architecture, buildings with historic interests and threatened biological species. It also discusses the different aspects of community conservation. Information about the current conservation policies and practices in Great Britain and the so-called flexible conservation policy is presented.

This article collates the official statistics on expectation of life and attempts to assess the changes in the urban-rural differences since the middle of the nineteenth century. The magnitude and causes of the differences have altered greatly and the capital cities now show expectations of life higher than the national average in Great Britain. According to the author, there are many difficulties involved in studying urban-rural differences in mortality, and especially over time. Towns have changed in area and social class composition and so have rural districts, many of which now have only a small fraction of their population involved in agriculture. Such changes argue for more detailed, rather than less detailed, analyses of mortality differences, taking into account social class, occupational group and housing conditions in particular. It is only by means of such analyses that it may be possible to discover how far the gradient which still appears to exist is attributable to real rural-urban differences and by what means some of the main continuing inequalities may be removed.

The article examines the regional planning approach taken by Great Britain following the Second World War. The establishment and functions of Local Planning Authorities based on the Planning Act of 1947 are mentioned. Problems with the established local development plan system are cited, including different levels of wealth enjoyed by various regions, increase of motor vehicles and how to recreate the central areas of existing cities and towns. The regional plan prepared by Professor Myles Wright of the University of Liverpool and his group for the city of Dublin, Ireland is also discussed.

The article examines developments and problems regarding the land reform and planning laws introduced in Great Britain. It explains that the Town and Country Planning Act of 1947 had been criticized for its provisions about "private ownership" of land. Under the 1947 Act, landowners are required to obtain permission for whatever they intend to use the land. The article discusses the medium sized towns in the urban pattern of industrialized societies in Great Britain. It suggests that the distribution of the towns and cities and their relative sizes should be the first concern of planners, in which proposals affecting the size and distribution shall not be separated from the economic basis on which all settlements are founded. It analyzes the proposals relating to the creation or adjusting of towns to a population size of between 20-100,000 which is being compared with the similar industrial urbanized society. Moreover, local variety in geographical detail and the modifications of economic history appears to have destroyed any regularity of pattern in the medium sized network or the spacing of such towns relative to larger centres.
