The article presents the paper of Edward U. Condon, director of the U.S. National Bureau of Standards, on the criticisms against the government. Condon urges people not to believe to those who make negative statements against the government. He suggests that instead of turning their ears to foolishly exaggerated statements, all people should work together to study and solve the administrative and political problems of government's scientific laboratories, to the end that they can work toward their steady improvement and increased efficiency.

The paper presents the address given by the author during the general session of the Midwest Sociological Society's 25th anniversary meeting on April 13, 1962, in Des Moines, Iowa. It discusses the author's experience with the society and his participation in its previous annual conferences. During his term as secretary of the society he has observed the changes in the structure and the functions of the society since its reorganization in 1937. The most important phenomenon having implications for a regional society is the decline in regionalism of American sociology. Regionalism, in the sense that it existed in 1937 has disappeared. The birth of the society have a significant impact on the origins of modern American sociology. The educational institutions established by notable members of the society have contributed to the production of doctor of philosophy degree in sociology.

The article presents notes for the members of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI), based upon the fourth annual meeting of the said society. First and foremost, chairman of the society stated that it would seem desirable to reconsider and to restate the objectives and the function of the SPSSI. As the by-laws of the society state, following would be two main task: one, promotion of psychological research on controversial topics, especially those related to the central fields of economics and politics; and two, the encouragement of the application of the findings of psychology to the problems of society. There is no need to point out that the war in Europe is the one overshadowing event that must take precedence in the thoughts of social psychologists. Hence it will be in their ability to contribute to the understanding and the publicizing of the psychological factors involved in war. Further, the society must become more and more sensitive not only to these conditions that lead to war-readiness but also to the complementary facts of suggestion and of war psychology.

The article focuses on the historical background of The Ohio Valley Sociological Society. On April 4, 1925, at the society's first annual meeting, The Ohio Sociological Society (O.S.S.) was formally founded. At the third annual meeting of the O.S.S. (1927), the society accepted the offer of the Ohio State University representatives to publish a mimeographed bulletin as the official organ of the O.S.S. The first issue was published in May, 1927, under the title of The Ohio Sociologist (1927-1938), predecessor of The Ohio Valley Sociologist (1938-1967) and Sociological Focus (1967--). At the 1938 annual O.S.S. meeting the name of the society was changed and thereafter officially entitled The Ohio Valley Sociological Society. After this action the society decided to make formal application to The American Sociological Society for regional affiliation. As a result the O.V.S.S. was recognized as Chapter No. 3 of The American Sociological Society on June 16, 1938. Whereas the Sociological Focus is now published as a scholarly journal, the O.V.S.S. still maintains the traditional information service in the form of a newsletter entitled The Ohio Valley Sociologist under the editorship of Dr. Shailer Thomas (Ohio State University).

The article presents a reprint of an essay written by Stephen Spender as his contribution to "Gateway to Science: The Weizmann Institute at Twenty-Five" which was held in honor of the Institute's 25th anniversary in Israel. He describes the Weizmann Institute as a supreme point of consciousness that is dedicated to science and represents the role that Israel may play in the Middle East. He also reflects on Dr. Weizmann's idea of establishing the research institute to produce the best scientist that could be compared with scientists in the U.S. and that research should be on pure science and basic research.

The article presents views of a visitor of the Siberian science center Akademgorodok in Novosibirsk, Russia. The first impression of the center, including the physical plant and its natural environment, is that here is an ideal realized. Akademgorodok was almost a technological nightmare instead of a humanistic showplace. The original plans called for the erection of those huge skyscrapers. Nature was to have been locked out, men would have been locked in, and minds would surely have been sterilized by artificiality.

The article reports on the programs undertaken by the Soviet Union as its contribution to the International Geophysical Year (IGY). The setting into operation of Soviet's program for the IGY is directed by a committee especially established by the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences, and headed by academician I. P. Bardin, vice president of the Academy of Sciences. About 100 scientific institutions throughout the Union are participating in investigations of the IGY. On July 1, 1957, 572 stations scattered over all parts of the country and beyond its boundaries, in the Antarctic, began observations under the IGY program.

The article discusses the transition from relatively small research institutes to huge research establishments which compelled scientists to face new problems of organizational structure and of human relationships. Because every large-scale establishment involves many diverse field activities and expert knowledge, the necessity for a single unifying personality at its head is even more obvious than it was in the older type of research institute. For it is difficult to imagine a large establishment without a director who embodies the common aim.

This article reveals the plan of the National Art Education Association to change the year of publication of the National Yearbook to the non-convention year. There are now plans under way to develop such a yearbook for 1952. It will feature chief addresses delivered at the 1951 convention in New York, as well as additional papers by art educators and general educators. In addition, the yearbook will include whatever trends are making themselves clear in the field of art education. There is still a limited number of copies available for the 1951 yearbook which costs $3 per copy. However, members of the association will receive the volume free on 1950-51 membership.

The article discusses trends and issues affecting sociology during the 25-year existence of the Midwest Sociological Society. During the covered period the influence of the pioneers in the building of American sociology, though waning, was still directly transmitted through some of their students who held key positions in sociology departments in the Midwest. The generation that first established and manned sociology departments in the burgeoning universities and colleges of the Midwest was for the most part strongly imbued with the idea and ideal of social progress. In place of social philosophies built on dubious foundations, the discipline has a nascent but growing science. The new empiric mood and objective orientation expelled not only the sociology of progress but brought into considerable disrepute the sociology of reform. Ambilances about the trends affecting the discipline of sociology have been raised by problems precipitated by the onset of the space age and mass higher education.

The article focuses on the policies and activities of Soviet Union with regards to the exchange of scientific information internationally. The year 1950 commenced the export of Soviet scientific magazines for subscription by the Soviet book store in New York, including 32 of the periodicals published by the Soviet Academy of Sciences. On March 1, 1951, however, the U.S. Department of Commerce restricted the distribution of American scientific journals to countries behind the Iron Curtain, but the restriction was eventually rescinded due to protests. The author challenges "Moscow News," and its staff to protest against Soviet restrictions on the mailing of Russian scientific journals.

The article reports career developments of people in the scientific community at University of California. Edwin M. McMillan has been as director of the Radiation Laboratory at the University of California in Berkeley. McMillan is a Nobel Prize winner and professor of physics. He succeeds the late Ernest O. Lawrence. McMillan has been an associate director of the Radiation Laboratory since 1954. Another associate director of the laboratory, Glenn T. Seaborg, became chancellor of the Berkeley campus of the University of Califomia.

The article reports on several events relevant to comparative education worldwide. A conference entitled the "Second World Congress of Comparative Education Societies" was held in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 28, 1974, to July 2, 1974. A conference organized by the International Baccalaureate Office was held in April 1974. The 1975 Conference of the Comparative Education Society in Europe will be held at the Centre Internationale d'Etudes Pedagogiques Sevres from June 2, 1975, to June 7, 1975.
