The report contains five papers dealing with some problems of a general classification scheme covering the whole field of knowledge which were presented at a conference held in London, June 1963. Topics covered included retrieval schemes, classification problems, inadequacies of existing classification schemes and the proposal of the Classification Research Group (CRG) for a new general classification. Thirteen papers representing the research efforts of the CRG during the years 1960-1968 under a grant to the Library Association form a record of progress under the grant. Various categories of terms and relationships of subjects, entity sequence, and notation problems are explored. Appendices provide tables of operators, provisional categories of attributes and schedules of entities. (AB)

Results of study confirm that uninformative titles of chemical papers are being eliminated and that informative titles are becoming more informative since the advent of the key-word-in-contex (KWIC) permuted-title index. (Author/MF)

Selected works in translation currently available by and about 33 Soviet Russian authors comprise the major portion of this annotated bibliography. Approximately 850 items published between 1920 and 1966 are included. Materials relating to Sholokhov, Leonov, and Esenin are especially well represented. Separate sections provide references to histories, studies, and discussions related to Soviet Russian literature and a list of 21 periodicals with frequent discussions of Soviet literature. (RL)

Deals with the relationship between a theory of indexing and a theory of information storage and retrieval. Attention is directed to the view that indexing is an order increasing operation, and some thermodynamic notions are invoked to aid in this description. (MF)

The Royal Society Catalogue of Scientific Papers is investigated in terms of its coverage of American science journals and American scientists. The journals indexed by the catalogue are compared to other standard lists of journals from the nineteenth century. (Author)

The objective of this project was to build a non-interfering indexing system, in which the social scientist users, who have varying conceptual orientations toward their field, would not be restricted in their literature searching by a single conceptual orientation imposed on the system by information scientists. With the cooperation of subject experts, a bibliography and index of a sample of material was compiled and is presented in Volume II of this report. The present volume begins with an introduction and overview which form a preface to a thematically grouped selection of papers. These papers were prepared at different periods in the project, and illustrate the various stages in the thinking and experimentation carried out by the research team. Topics include: 1) early organization of the project, 2) experiments in the appropriateness of the PRECIS indexing system, 3) development of an alternative rationale for indexing, 4) procedures for the selection, processing and description of documents, 5) overall intellectual organization of the index, principles of indexing and the establishment of subject headings. This paper presents a new multivariate index for use in educational planning. This new index, is called a propinquity index. An individual's propinquity index with respect to a given occupational group is his geometric distance in n-dimensional space from the group centroid, where each dimension is the standard score on one of the original variables weighted by a value representing, at least approximately, the relevance of the corresponding variable in identifying group members. The propinquity index may be used in two ways in helping the individual develop his educational and vocational plans. Converted to a propinquile, it can constitute one of many separate items of information used in arriving at important decisions. In many circumstances the propinquity index may function better as one of the predictors in a multiple regression equation to predict a dichotomous group membership criterion. (Author/KJ)

This paper was prepared to provide a frame of reference to the role of microfilm within the information retrieval world and to provide an opportunity for evaluation of the use of microforms for active retrieval applications. The paper discusses the principles of information retrieval, considers subject and classification indexing, and describes elements of coding for manual and machine applications. The implications of information retrieval practices on microform information retrieval systems are considered. The author discusses costs, equipment, advantages and disadvantages, and other characteristics of manual, semiautomated, and automated information retrieval using aperture card, microfiche, roll and cartridge film, and film strip systems. Illustrations of various types of indexes show the differences in format of KWIC, KWOC, co-occurrence, and coordinate indexes. A 39-item bibliography is appended. (Author/JW)

Words and word fragments from the computer-readable data bases "Chemical Abstracts Condensates" and "Biological Abstracts Previews" were analyzed in terms of length, number, and frequency of appearance to determine some parameters upon which inversion of these data bases could be predicated. Types (unique words or fragments) and tokens (all appearances of types) were counted and type:token ratios calculated. A KLIC (Key-letter-in-Context) Index was also generated from each of the data bases. The paper discusses the impact of the various counts, ratios and projections on the problem of inverting the data bases for retrospective search purposes. (Author)

The author discusses information retrieval systems with particular emphasis on the assignment of descriptor terms. She first explains the method of determining terms by deriving key words from a title or abstract, a procedure that can often be carried out by a computer. After discussing the problems of derived indexing, the author explains the procedure of assigning terms to an article, a slower process that requires indexers who are familiar with the discipline. This provides greater control over the information. The author then describes the efforts of an ad hoc committee of the Speech Communication Association to organize and begin to establish a retrieval system useful for researchers in the communications discipline. A total of 42 selected publications, dating from 1948 to 1970, are collated and organized under 15 broad categories in this guide to useful materials related to secondary reading. The materials include texts, books, yearbooks, monographs, bibliographies, and a comprehensive research index. The fifteen categories are (1) the nature of reading development, (2) the need for secondary reading programs, (3) developmental and sequential reading, (4) trends and practices in organization of secondary reading, (5) reading programs--kindergarten through college, (6) educational personnel and reading, (7) parents and reading improvement, (8) reading skills and how to teach them, (9) reading in content areas, (10) reading interests--personal development through reading, (11) materials--mass media--mechanical devices in reading, (12) measurement and evaluation in reading, (13) diagnosis and remediation of reading difficulties, (14) research in reading, and (15) reading reference materials. For each category, subheadings, chapters, and page numbers of relevant materials are listed. (AW)

The interdisciplinary nature of the literature of American library history indicates that much of the best literature in the field is published in journals which do not fit within the familiar confines of "Library Literature." To illustrate the difficulties, a bibliography of 170 items relating to Pennsylvania library history was checked against "Library Literature,""Writings on American History," and "America: History and Life." Only 93 of the 170 entries were located in these sources. The author suggests broadening the coverage of "Library Literature," publication of an annual review of the literature of American library history, and the preparation of a comprehensive bibliography of American library history, as remedies for this lack of coverage. The author concludes that the absence of these essential tools has hindered collection building in the field and has led to considerable duplication of research. The body of this paper consists of brief descriptions, in alphabetical order, of desegregation resources, mainly in California. For convenience, the categories of resources are divided into desegregation education, desegregation planning, integration, and financial resources. Groups such as the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, the Task Force for Integrated Education, and the System Development Corporation are included. (Author/JW)

The arrangement of this publication follows, as nearly as possible, the actual conference program. The seven sections represent the topics selected by the planning committee as areas of concentration. Each section includes a state-of-the-art paper and related talks and discussion. The topics covered are: the library of the future, file organization and conversion, file storage and access of bibliographic information; graphic storage techniques and applications, microforms, output printing for library mechanization; library communications and networks, automation of library systems; library systems analysis; and mathematical models and system design. The purpose of this paper is: (1) to propose models to be used in evaluating relative time and cost factors involved in monograph cataloging within a hospital library, and (2) to test the models by performing a cost and time analysis of each cataloging method studied. To establish as complete a list of cataloging work units as possible, several hospital catalogers in the Detroit area were interviewed to learn the pattern of steps they follow. A check-list of cataloging work was then prepared to test the following possible approaches to cataloging: (1) original cataloging, using either Library of Congress (LC) or National Library of Medicine (NLM) systems, (2) cataloging with LC cards, (3) cataloging with LC cards, but utilizing NLM subject headings, (4) cataloging with LC proofcopy, and (5) cataloging from NLM bibliographic information. Data for the cost-time analysis was collected during March of 1969 at the Wayne State University School of Medicine Library (WSUML). Fifty titles considered suitable for a hospital library were cataloged using each of the above approaches. The different cataloging methods measured are discussed in relation to the hospital library situation. For each method there is a table listing the time and cost values for every work unit with alternatives available within each method. (Author/JB)

A project designed to permit people from different disciplines to locate and retrieve rapidly, and as specifically as possible, all items in a slide collection that fill their specific needs, is the subject of this paper. A field-test of the system for 35mm slides used within the fields of Art, History, Literature and Drama yielded the following main conclusions: that the system is possible and practical; that slide collections should not be limited to one subject area since they tend to have application in more than one discipline; that these collections are most useful when designed to permit a user to locate items using terminology he is familiar with; that the system is easy to use, is compatible with any shelving or cataloguing system, and can be used either with a computerized or manual retrieval system; and, finally, that there is still a great deal of work to be done to refine and perfect the system. These theses and dissertations were prepared under the program supervised by the Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Force Development. The Army Library serves as the recipient of these papers, copies of which are submitted by students participating in the program. This paper is part of a project to set up a vertical file of pamphlet material for the Library School of Western Reserve University. The questions explored by this project are: (1) Can a classification of knowledge be created that will bring together all areas of knowledge related to Library Science and yet carry a short, simple notation? and (2) Is it feasible to use a classified arrangement for pamphlet material instead of an alphabetical one based on subject headings? The project involved five steps: (1) creation of a classification of the areas of knowledge which would be pertinent to the study of Library Science, (2) application of a letter notation to that classification, (3) creation of an author file of the pamphlets in the collection, (4) creation of an index to the classification scheme and (5) preparation of a manual of instructions for the use and maintenance of the vertical file and indexes. The problem of the physical care and preservation of pamphlets was not explored. (Author/NH)

"Access" is an indexing, abstracting, and information retrieval service that covers published and non-print information on environmental pollution, conservation, and related fields. It provides an overview of the environmental reporting of more than 1000 scholarly, scientific, industrial, technical, and general periodicals and major newspapers; important environmental radio and television programming, films and filmstrips, books, corporate publications, and major conference publications. Introductory pages explain the Access system, the Ecology Forum, the microfiche retrieval system, and significant information appearing in the issue. The Main Entry section contains document abstracts related to: air pollution, chemical and biological contamination, energy, environmental action, environmental design, food, international aspects, land use and misuse, noise pollution, non-renewable resources, oceans and estuaries, population planning and control, radiological contamination, recreation, renewable resources, solid wastes, transportation, water pollution, weather, modification and geophysical change, and wildlife. Special emphasis in this issue is on papers, proceedings, and comments from the U.N. Conference on the Human Environment. Additional sections deal with significant environmental entries from the Federal Register, current environment-related conferences, and subject, industry, and author indexes. (BL)

A data base of information related to computer applications in the many aspects of environmental design, started in 1967 and consistently updated, includes over 1,000 stored entries of article, book, conference paper, and unpublished literature titles. This bibliography provides architects, planners, consultants, etc. with an access to the data base. Each entry is coded with a number of key words, any combination of which can be searched. The collection covers many highly defined areas of computer applications to architecture, building, site planning, space planning, land use, construction, design method, computer graphics, urban design, city planning, simulation, costing, design document, consulting engineering, and management. The bibliography lists entries alphabetically by author; a typical keyword search of more than 80 categories is included in each volume. Entries in each volume are also subject indexed, with the entries under each topic listed alphabetically by author. (Author/EA)
