The article reports that an antitrust suit has been filed against publisher Leonard Kimball Nicholson and his newspapers, "Times-Picayune" and "States-Item" for unfair competition practices against rival paper "New Orleans Item," owned by David Stern. The newspapers were accused of unfairly attempting to eliminate their only competitor. Nicholson warned other publishers that they were also parties to the suit.

Snow collected a substantial volume, some nineteen papers and addresses on political and legal subjects which he had contributed during the past ten years to various periodicals, or to the proceedings of learned societies. Of the legal or constitutional papers those which deal with the development of the American doctrine of the jurisdiction of courts over States, the execution of judgments against States, and the position of the judiciary in the American system of government are the most notable.

The collection of articles in "In Commemoration of William James: 1842-1942," is remarkable for several reasons. It contains the first account of a European's conversion away from the Continental view of philosopher William James. Writer Arnold Metzger is this European, and his excel- lent article is a reinforcement, or even better a filling out, of Whitehead's formula about the Jamesian revolution in philosophy. Two or three other papers in this series deserve longer mention than one can give them. Henry James's introductory remarks about his father have the same assurance blended with modesty that characterizes his previous editorial performances; and the anecdotes he tells are well worth adding to the collection-

In "Brisbane: A Candid Biography," writer Oliver Carlson goes about the job of putting his subject on the record for posterity with a portentous lack of humor. He proves, among other unexceptionable things, that businessman Arthur Brisbane loved money and was a dull platitudinarian, all of which might reasonably be printed in the Coals to Newcastle Department. Perhaps the posterity will delight in such incontestable demonstrations, but they need not be pulled out like taffy in 1937; there is a better use for white paper.

This article presents information on the book "The Correspondence of King George the Third," edited by John Fortescue in six volumes. The articles contained in these volumes extend over a little more than ten years, from July, 1773, to December, 1783, a period memorable in the history of the British monarchy and empire as witnessing George III's experiment in personal government, its ignominious failure, the loss of the American colonies, and the international humiliation of Great Britain. By far the greater part of the documents, as of those which Sir John Fortescue published in the first two volumes of the Correspondence" come from the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle and have not previously been printed. The papers relate almost entirely to political and public matters, but they throw much light upon the King's personality.

How much of the Pepys who is familiar through the "Diary" is to be come upon in the two volumes of the "Private Correspondence and Miscellaneous Papers of writer Samuel Pepys: 1679-1703," edited by J. B. Tanner from the Pepys Cockerell Collection, may be gathered from three facts: that most of the letters published therein are by others than Pepys himself, that a great many of the subjects discussed have only a remote connection with his familiar life, and that when he does speak he speaks chiefly out of his seventh decade.

This article presents information on "The Collected Papers" of Charles Sanders Peirce. It is explored and interpreted, that the stature of the man grows larger and larger. Not very well known in his own day, he has gradually come to be recognized as one of the dominating figures of American philosophy. Toward the assimilation of Peirce's thought Author Justus Buchler's book is an important contribution, and not only because it is the first book-length study to be published. Scholarly, perspicuous, cautious in its judgments of perplexing material, sticking close to the task of exploring a self-assigned area, this study is, nevertheless, illuminating and exciting, because at the same time that it clarifies its subject matter through exposition and criticism it makes explicit its incidence on contemporary problems.

This article presents information about a number of brief essays belonging to Edgar Allan Poe, an American poet, short-story writer and critic, that had not been accredited to him. That a review of R. M. Bird's "Calaver" in the "Southern Literary Messenger" of February 1835 is Poe's is established by his reference back to it in his reviews of Bird's "The Infidel" and "The Hawks of Hawk-Hollow." The ninth and tenth paragraphs of the editorial "Why not try a Mineralized Pavement" reappeared with slight changes as the seventh and eight paragraphs of Poe's paper on "Street Paving" in the "Broadway Journal" of April 19, 1945. The paper is valueless as literature but possesses significance as showing the variety of Poe's interests.

It was but one of many a crustacean that darted here and there in that great sea and its sluggish marshy reaches that once filled the interior of the North American continent countless millions of years ago. One of these fossils, the gift of the recently deceased genial and honored curator of the Buffalo Academy of Sciences, Henry R. Howland, lies temporarily as a paper weight upon this masterly work of Menninger's upon the human mind.

English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray was never tired of dilating on the advantage of authorship over other callings in the small amount of Persian apparatus it required. A little white paper, ink guaranteed not to blotch or run, and pens not to splutter, a table to sit at, and a chair or bed to sit on, and there one had the author's "plant" complete. Journalism in no way more surely proves that it is not literature than in so persistently going unclad in the latter's purple and fine linen. It is not necessary to say, than, that one's knowledge of the interior fittings of the libraries of real authors is gained at second-hand. But the amount of second-hand, or second-class, information about them now accessible is getting to be enormous. It is only fair to say that authors are but children of their age. The part, which a library plays in the pictured surroundings of any man prominently before the public has come to be more and more necessary.

He finds the three currently prevailing tendencies to be Marxism, secular authority, and Christianity; "The Golden Horizon," which is edited by Cyril Connolly, is an anthology of the best of "Horizon," and is notable for excellent personal impressions of World War II and vivid essays on renowned European literary figures.

This article presents information on the works of authors George William Curtis and Theodore Winthrop. The novelist, Theodore Winthrop, had two production from his pen: "A Companion to the Heart or the Andes" and "Our March to Washington." Almost immediately there appeared the second military sketch, "Washington as a Camp." Curtis's biographical sketch of Winthrop appeared, together with fragments of a projected third paper and portions of war-time letters. There seems no probability of proving that they were not submitted in the regular way.

This article presents information on the "biography and iconography," a certain number of official and unpublished papers and a bibliography, of "Francisco de Miranda," which form the contents of a volume of nearly 200 octavo pages, by author Count O'Kelly. The story of Miranda is recounted at length, in its proper setting of time and place, in the volume published in 1812 by the lamented Jules Mancini on "Bolivar and the Emancipation of the Spanish Colonies" This work of original research, the completest yet published, reaches only to 1815, and it is to be feared that no one will be found to utilize the materials which the author was gathering at the moment of his death for a concluding volume.
