A true lifetime effect on the superfluidity in neutron stars due to quasi-particle scattering processes is calculated with the Green function method and is found to lower the superfluid transition temperature by about 20%. This effect constitutes part of the impurity effects on the superfluidity in neutron stars, i.e. it partly arises from the presence of neutrons in the proton superfluid phase and protons in the neutron superfluid phase.

We consider a doorway state phenomenon: Via a selective process, likey γ-decay, a highly excited nuclear state of simple structure is prepared. We investigate its decay with particular emphasis on the compound nucleus modes. The formulae may be applied to radiationless decays in muonic atoms or to the decay of the residual nucleus after a (e, 'ep) or (p, 2p) reaction.

The microscopic optical matrix potential (OMP m ) for rotational nuclei is constructed. The structure of the non-diagonal elements of OMP m is investigated and compared with the deformed part of the phenomenological optical potential (OMP p ) employed in analyses of nucleon inelastic scattering data. The deformed form of OMP p relates the real parts of the phenomenological form factors. This relation is shown to be approximately satisfied by the microscopic form factors. It is proved that the decay amplitudes of complicated compound states to similar channels are correlated, which we call the similar channels effect (SCE). Some channels are similar since the rotational states of the target are obtained from the same intrinsic state. The commonly used deformed imaginary part of OMP p at very low energies (few MeV or Iess) may be justified as being due to the similar channels effect.

A microscopic dynamical model is used for the inelastic scattering of nucleons by deformed nuclei and the fluctuation cross sections are calculated. The case of weak absorption in all channels is considered so that the number of statistical assumptions is minimized. The results are compared with the Hauser-Feshbach expressions as regards the magnitude and structure. The partial width amplitudes calculated from the model are correlated, the simplest type of level-level correlations being due to the similar-channels effect (SCE). When the correlations are due to SCE alone, the following two results are obtained, (i) The fluctuation cross sections are increased over the Hauser-Feshbach estimates, for Γ ⪡ D and Γ ⪢ D , by a factor κ if the entrance and exit channels are similar. The numerical value of κ is found to be 3 for a special case and in the general case it is conjectured to lie between the limits 1 and 3, (ii) The fluctuation cross sections σ cc ′ f 1 and σ f 1 cc ″ exhibit correlated fluctuations if the exit channels c ′ and c ″ are similar. The fluctuation cross sections in the cases “SCE+direct channel-channel coupling” and “SCE+intermediate structure” are also investigated. In all cases studied direct reaction cross sections do not vanish and the channelwise factorization assumption of the Hauser-Feshbach theory fails.

A microscopic theory of inelastic scattering of nucleons from rotational nuclei is formulated. Angular-momentum conservation and full antisymmetrization require a careful choice of the many-body basis states for the scattering problem. A very convenient set of basis states { X e c , Φ } turns out to be a non-orthogonal system. The advantages and properties of this representation are discussed and the scattering matrix is calculated. Numerical analysis shows that our formalism gives an accurate and practical description of the inelastic scattering by doubly even deformed nuclei and by odd-even rotational nuclei where Coriolis coupling effects are weak. The study of low-energy resonances via the example of the splitting of the swave neutron strength function gives us additional confidence in our approach so that in paper (II) we shall present some applications which we hope contribute to a better understanding of scattering by deformed nuclei.

Es wird berichtet uber die Eigenschaften und Verwendungsmoglichkeiten des Mahalebols, das in den Kernen der Anatolischen Weichselkirsche zu etwa 35% enthalten ist und sich durch starke Trocknungsfahigkeit und verhaltnismasig hohen Gehalt an α-Elaeostearinsaure auszeichnet. Die lacktechnische Auswertung dieses bisher noch nicht ausgebeuteten turkischen Rohstoffes ist vielversprechend. Sobre el aceite de Mahaleb Se detallan las propiedades y las posibilidades de aplicacion del aceite de Mahaleb que existe en un 35% en los huesos de las guindas agrias de Anatolia. El aceite presenta una elevada secantividad y un contenido relativamente alto en acido α-eleostearico. El empleo en la industria de lacas de esta materia prima turca, todavia no explotada, es muy prometedor.

The tabletting characteristics of crystalline and spray dried lactose under direct compression have been examined together with the effect of particle size, shape and storage of the powders. The results indicated that the particle size had little effect, although there was a general tendency for the compact strength to increase as the particle size decreased. On the other hand, the particle shape and storage of the powder influenced the strength of the tablets and the force lost to the die wall. The 22 μm and 35 μm fractions of spray dried lactose—especially the latter—were almost entirely very regular spherical particles which resulted in the strongest tablets, whereas fractions below or above contained many more angular particles resulting in weaker tablets. Storage of the small particle size fraction of the crystalline material appeared to induce aggregation, and on compaction, a harder tablet was formed, accompanied by a decrease in the force lost to the die wall.
