Incidence of abnormality in liver functions was significantly higher in patients with peptic ulcer than in the control group. It was also significantly different from that in patients with gastric cancer or gastritis. The disturbance of liver functions in peptic ulcer was usually mild to slight in degree. No definite correlation was found between liver functions and histological findings on biopsy specimens obtained from 19 randomly selected patients with peptic ulcer.

(1) Clinical and pathological findings were studied in 56 cases of cerebral embolism among 1, 029 patients admitted to the Second Medical Department, Tokyo University Hospital from 1941 to 1957.(2) No sexual difference was found (male 30, female 26), (3) The nature of the underlying heart diseases were as follows; mitral stenosis, mitral stenosis and insufficiency, combined valvular disease, sclerotic and hypertensive heart disease, congenital heart disease, S.B.E., and so on.(4) Thirty per cents of 56 cases had multiple embolic episodes. Interval between each episode was within 6 months in about one half of the cases.(5) It was demonstrated that atrial fibrillation was the very important factor as the cause of emboli, and digitalis therapy, congestive failure or size of the heart were not related to the occurrence of cerebral emboli.(6) Paralysis was the most frequent neurological symptom. No dominant laterality was found. Recoveries from paralysis were complete or moderate in 74%.(7) Recovery from mental deterioration was seen in 79%, one half of which restored the consciousness in 24 hours.(8) Many cerebral embolic episodes occurred in valvular heart disease with intracardiac thrombus. On the other hand, many cases of S.B.E. without intracardiac thrombus developed cerebral emboli.(9) The lesions of basal ganglia and internal capsule were found to be most frequent, and the area of middle cerebral artery was involved far more frequently than the other area.

Circulatory and respiratory function of the thalamus was studied in 25 dogs and the following results were obtained.(1) Marked elevation of arterial blood pressure was observed by the stimulation of the midline nuclei group and medial nuclei group. Stimulating the anterior nuclei group, slight vasopressor responses were found. But the stimulation of the ventral and lateral nuclei group caused little change in blood pressure.(2) The standard and intraatrial lead of electrocardiogram showed marked acceleration of cardiac rate and various arrhythmias such as nodal extrasystole or escape and ventricular extrasystole etc. by the stimulation of the midline and medial nuclei group and some portions of the anterior nuclei group. These ventricular extrasystoles were divided into 2 groups according to their characteristics in EKG and the regions causing each of them were also discussed. The stimulation of the ventral and lateral nuclei group scarcely resulted in any disturbances of the cardiac rhythm.(3) Acceleration of breathing was shown on the stimulation of the midline, medial and ventral nuclei group. All cases of the anterior nuclei stimulation elicited marked inhibition of respiration.(4) Other visceral and somatic changes such as pupillodilatation, erection of hair, urinary or fecal incontinence and convulsion were observed upon the stimulation of various regions in the thalamus, but they occurred most prominently on the midline and medial nuclei stimulation.From the data above-mentioned, it can be concluded that the stimulation of the medial part of the thalamus-midline and medial nuclei group-results in marked changes in circulation, respiration and other autonomic functions. Furthermore, considering the anatomical relationship between the thalamic nuclei and the higher autonomic centers, it seems that the autonomic representation in the thalmus locates in this portion.

不純物含有量の少ないメンブランフィルターを用い,大気浮遊微粒子の比較的長期にわたる平均組成を求める発光分光分析法を検討した.すなわち,ローボリューム・エアサンプラーにミリポアフィルター(AAWP-105)を装着し,20l/minで10日間連続通気し,粒径10μm以下の浮遊微粒子を捕集した.このフィルターの半分に0.2mlのエチルアルコールを浸潤させ,点火して約10秒間おだやかに燃焼炭化させ,その後低温灰化する.得られた灰分に13.0mgのインジウムとパラジウムとの混合酸化物粉末(2000:1)を混合し,さらに,これに等量の炭酸リチウムと黒鉛粉末の混合緩衝剤(1:1)を加え,ふたたびよく混合する.これをカップ型黒鉛電極に充てんし,ボイラーキャップをかぶせ,交流アーク8A,電極間げき2mm,スリット幅15μmで20秒間励起発光させた.本法により13種の微量元素が比較的簡便に分析でき,その定量値の変動係数は5.4～21.4%であった.

This paper reports the research on adhesion mechanism of electroless plating on ABS plastics under an electron microscope. Peeling test was conducted to determine the adhesive strength between copper and the plastics. It was indicated in normal plating conditions that peeling did not occur on the interface between plastics and metal, but on the surface layer of the plastics; and the adhesive strength depended upon the strength of the surface layer of the plastics. Hence, the molding and etching conditions of plastics had powerful effects on the adhesive strength. The above effects would be caused by the presence of internal stress and orientation in the contact part with the mold which made that layer concentrically brittle. The presence of such layer was observed under the electron microscope. The etching conditions had effects on the formation of dovetail joints. Stronger adhesion was produced by the formation of numerous joints under proper etching conditions. However, the parts of anchoring were limited on the whole, and chemical combination would also be taken into consideration for adhesion mechanism.

多くのベンゾフラン誘導体の水素炎イオン化検出器を付したガスクロマトグラフィーによる分離確認方法について検討し,充てん剤,カラムの長さ,温度条件を選択することにより従来の方法で得られる以上の知見を得ることがわかった.

Circulatory and respiratory changes by stimulation in the medulla oblongata were investigated in 36 dogs.(1) The localization relating to the changes of blood pressure, heart beat and respiration was observed. The distribution of blood pressure and prespiratory response was generally in agreement with the findings of previous investigators.(2) A fall in blood pressure was, as a rule, associated with a decrease in heart rate, and assumed to be caused by both cardioinhibitory and vasodepressor effects. Whereas, an elevation in blood pressure was occasionally associated with a decrease in heart rate. This paradoxical response seemed in part to be elicited by the reflex, but in part seemed by the direct cardioinhibitory and vasopressor effects.(3) In dorsal vagal nucleus, the cardioinhibitory effect was obtained, but in part the cardioacceleration was also observed. This mechanism was discussed.

(1) Heart muscle catecholamine content, pseudocholinesterase activity, and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic pyruvic transaminase activities were measured in rats after administration of 3, 5, 3' triiodothyronine and 1-methy 1-2-mercaptoimidazole in order to find further correlations between these and the effects of thyroid hormones. Heart muscle adrenaline content significantly decreased in hyperthyroid group compared with hypothyroid and coutrol group. The significance of this finding in explaining hypersensitivity of adrenaline in hyperthyroidism was discussed. The metabolism of catecholamines in relation to this finding was also discussed.(2) Pseudocholinesterase activity in the heart muscle significantly increased in hyperthyroid group and decreased in hypothyroid group compared with control group. Its possible significance in thyroid diseases was discussed.(3) Glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic pyruvic transaminase activities in the heart muscle significantly decreased in hyperthyroid as well as hypothyroid group compared with control group. It is likely that muscular involvements in thyroid diseases are significant enough to cause possible liberation of these enzymes.
