The formation of thin AlN films and some of their electrical properties have been investigated. The films were prepared by exposing the surface of evaporated aluminium films to a glow discharge in pure nitrogen gas. It has been confirmed by transmission electron diffraction that the structure of the film is of the wurtzite type, as is that of the bulk material. It was observed that the thickness of the AlN films depends on the voltage of the glow discharge, the distance from the discharge electrode to the films and the treatment time. The electrical properties were measured in the form of a sandwich diode, i.e. Al-AlN-Au. The voltage-controlled negative resistance, which was first discovered in Al-Al2O3-metal diodes, has also been observed in this nitride film diode and shows very good reproducibility and stability.

Ten N,N-dialkylselenocarbamate complexes of palladium(II) and platinum(II), [(C6H5)3P]2Pd[SeC(O)NR2]2(1), [(C6H5)3P]2Pt[SeC(O)NR2]2 (2) (R=CH3, C2H5, n-C3H7, and n-C4H9), [CH3(C6H5)2P]2Pd[SeC(O)N-(CH3)2]2 (3), and [CH3(C6H5)2P]2Pt[SeC(O)N(CH3)2]2 (4), have been prepared. The infrared spectra and molecular-weight determinations indicate that the selenocarbamate ligand is bonded to the palladium(II) or platinum(II) through the selenium atom, with a free carbonyl group in the solid state, while in 1 and 2 two and one triphenylphosphine dissociate in a dilute solution to exist as compounds with bidentate selenocarbamate, Pd[SeC(O)NR2]2 and [(C6H5)3P]Pt[SeC(O)NR2]2, respectively. The 1H- and 31P-NMR spectra of 3 and 4 reveal that they have a trans-configuration. The same configuration is suggested for the N,N-dibutyl derivative of 2 on the basis of the spin-spin coupling constant between the 31P and 195Pt nuclei.

Several N,N-dialkylselenocarbamate complexes of tin(IV), (CH3)2Sn[OSeCNR2]2 (1), (CH3)2ClSn[OSeCNR2] (2) (R=CH3 and C2H5) and (CH3)3Sn[OSeCN(CH3)2] (3), have been prepared, and their infrared and proton magnetic resonance spectra have been examined. The results indicate that in 1 and 2 the selenocarbamate ligands are coordinated to the tin atom in a bidentate manner, although the coordination of the oxygen atom is weak. On the other hand, 3 has a tetra-coordinate tin with a free carbonyl bond. The configurations of these complexes are discussed and compared with those of the corresponding thio-, dithio-, diseleno-, and thioselenocarbamate complexes of tin(IV).

Di-p-tolyl disulfone and diphenyl disulfone were decomposed in various arenes by irradiation of UV light. The products found were arenesulfonic acids, arenesulfonic anhydrides, thiolsulfonates, diaryl sulfones, biaryls, and sulfur dioxide. All the findings indicate that photolyses of α-disulfones yield a pair of arenesulfonyl radicals.

Dimethyltin-bis(N,N-dimethyldithiocarbamate), (CH3)2Sn[S2CN(CH3)2]2, reacts with dihalogenoalkanes to give 1,3-dithiacycloalkyl-2-dimethylimminium dimethyltin halides, (Remark: Graphics omitted.) (n=1 or 2; m=2, 3, or 4; X=Cl, Br, or I). On the other hand, the reactions between dimethyltin bis(N-methyl-N-phenyldithiocarbamate), (CH3)2Sn[S2CN(CH3)(C6H5)]2, and dihalogenoalkanes yield preferentially alkylene bis(N-methyl-N-phenyldithiocarbamate). The difference in reactivity between the two types of complexes is discussed. The infrared and NMR spectra indicate that the positive charge on the dithiacycloalkylimminium ions is more delocalized in the higher homologues. The configurations of dimethyltin trihalide and tetrahalide anions in the solid state and in solution are also presented on the basis of the infrared spectra; the results suggest that, in solution, dimethyltin trihalide anions are more likely to be formed than are dimethyltin tetrahalides.

核磁気共鳴吸収は近時物質の構造ならびに物性の研究手段として重要なものとなりつつあり,高分子物質の微細構造を知る方法としても使われるようになってきた。本報はまず微細構造を異にする各種のセルロース試料の測定を行い, 叩解未叩解B.S.Pならびにそれらよりつくった紙について測定し, またそれらを加熱処理したものと未加熱のものとの比較を行って各種セルロース試料の微細構造および紙に存在する繊維間結合の状態,加熱処理の影響等を考察した。その結果種々のセルロース試料はそれぞれ異なった吸収微分曲線を与え,その曲線は定性的ではあるが微細構造の一面をよくあらわすことが確かめられた。またこれらの観察から,紙に存在する繊維間結合は自由な状態のプロトンを拘束状態にするものであるから-OH間の水素結合として考えられ,加熱処理されたセルロースも同様に水素結合の密度が増し,繊維間にもそのような結合が増すと考えられた。核磁気共鳴吸収の測定は紙パルプ研究の有力な手段であると考える。

Dichloroketene was allowed to react with a mixture of 1- and 2-isopropylcyclopentadienes (1 and 2) to afford a mixture of the cycloadducts 5, 7 and 8. The adducts 5 and 8 were isolated, and an adduct 7 was obtained as a mixture with 5. The structures of these adducts were assigned. Some derivatives of the adducts were prepared and their structures discussed. A mixture of β- and γ-thujaplicins (19 and 20) were produced after a mixture of the adducts was heated in acetic acid containing potassium acetate, 2-Isopropylcyclopentadiene (2) was prepared from cyclopentadienylmagnesium bromide and isopropyl tosylate, and the adduct obtained gave only β-thujaplicin under the same solvolytic reaction conditions.

Reactivity and compatibility studies were carried out on some vanadium base alloys with ceramic fuel materials. The vanadium base alloys studied were V-20%Ti, V-15%Ti-7.5%Cr and V-5%Cr. The fuel materials with which these alloys were put in contact were UC, UN, (U, Ce)N and (U,Ce)(C,N). Experiments were carried out at 700° and 900°C for both 500 and 1,000 hr. Within the conditions studied, V-5%Cr showed good compatibility with all of these fuel materials. At 700°C, no detectable interaction was observed between any of the alloy-fuel combinations.

Methyl, ethyl, n-butyl, n-octyl, benzyl, and allyl p-toluenesulfinates were photolyzed in n-hexane or without solvent. The products analyses indicate that the photolyses of these esters involve the fission of ArSO–OR bond, producing a sulfinyl radical and an alkoxy radical. In the case of the allyl ester, isomerization to the corresponding sulfone took place to some extent. When optically active l-menthyl l-p toluenesulfinate was irradiated, its optical activity decreased fairly quickly while very little photolysis was observed. This photo-racemization was ascribed to the reversible formation of sulfinyl radical and menthyloxy radical. When di-n-butyl sulfite was photolyzed, the products found were explained by assuming the initial formation of n-butoxysulfinyl radical and n-butoxy radical. When n-butyl chlorosulfite was photolyzed, the products found indicate the initial fission of the S–Cl bond instead of the S–O bond.

The molecular motion of polybutenes of low molecular weights has been studied by observing the NMR line widths and spin-lattice relaxation times at temperatures in the range from −180 to 200°C. The temperature dependence of these values is similar to that of polyisobutylene of a higher molecular weight. The correlation time spectra calculated from the spin-lattice relaxation time and the spin-spin relaxation time shift in the shorter-time direction with the decrease in the molecular weight. The dependence of the correlation frequency upon the temperature is also discussed in terms of the W. L. F. equation.

The purpose of this paper is to test the hypothesis of Fiedler's Leadership Contingency Model in organizations. Used for this study were 4 organizations-hospital, chemical plant, automobile sales company, and bank, covering a total of 57 groups and including the first-level supervior to the second-level supervisor.Tests were performed in 5 cells, which were Octants I, II, III, V, and VII.The results proved that the hypothesis of the Contingency Model was supported and this model could be applied to the second-level of these organizations.

Complex formation of PCl 3 , C 6 H 5 PCl 2 , (C 6 H 5 ) 2 PCl, (C 6 H 5 ) 3 P, ( m -tolyl) 3 P, ( p -tolyl) 3 P, P(OCH 3 ) 3 , C 6 H 5 P(OCH 3 ) 2 , and (C 6 H 5 ) 2 POCH 3 with 2,2′-bipyridyl have been examined in 1,2-dichloroethane and/or acetonitrile. The continuous variation method or the mole ratio method in the ultraviolet absorption spectra shows that these phosphines form the 1:1 complexes with 2,2′-bipyridyl in solution, except for P(OCH 3 ) 3 , C 6 H 5 P(OCH 3 ) 2 , and (C 6 H 5 ) 2 POCH 3 . The measurements of electric conductivity and infrared spectra indicate that the complexes of PCl 3 , C 6 H 5 PCl 2 , (C 6 H 5 ) 2 PCl dissociate more or less into ionic species in acetonitrile, while those of R 3 P (R = phenyl, m- and p-tolyl) exist as simple addition compounds in 1,2-dichloroethane. The stability constants of these complexes estimated spectrophotometrically are the order of; PCl 3 > C 6 H 5 PCl 2 > (C 6 H 5 ) 2 PCl > (C 6 H 5 ) 3 P > (m-tolyl) 3 P > (p-tolyl) 3 P ⪢ (C 6 H 5 ) 2 POCH 3 ∼ C 6 H 5 P(OCH 3 ) 2 ∼ P(OCH 3 3 . This trend suggests that the phosphines act as Lewis acids toward 2,2′-bipyridyl and they interact mainly through σ electronic system.

Dimethyltin-bis(N,N-dimethylthioselenocarbamate), (CH3)2Sn[SSeCN(CH3)2]2, dimethyltin-bis(N,N-dimethyldiselenocarbamate), (CH3)2Sn[Se2CN(CH3)2]2, and dimethyltin-bis(N-methyl-N-phenyldiselenocarbamate), (CH3)2Sn[Se2CN(CH3)(C6H5)]2, react with dibromoalkanes to give bis(1-thia-3-selenacycloalkyl-2-dimethylimminium)dimethyltin tetrabromide, (Remark: Graphics omitted.) (m=2, 3), 1,3-diselenacycloalkyl-2-dimethylimminium dimethyltin bromides, (Remark: Graphics omitted.) (n=1, m=2 and n=2, m=3), and 1,3-diselenacyclopentyl-2-methylphenylimminium bromide, (Remark: Graphics omitted.), respectively. The infrared and PMR spectra indicate that the positive charges of 1-thia-3-selena- and 1,3-diselenacycloalkylimminium ions are more delocalized in the higher homologs than in the lower ones.
