5. Chondrosarcoma of rib: Report of two cases

Abstract

Two cases of Chondrosarcoma of rib origin are presented.Case 1: A 17-year-old male, incident to a school routine chest roentgenogram, was found tohave a abnormal shadow of the left chest field. At first, he was treated as pleurisy at anotherclinic, later referred to our clinic for operation, under the diagnosis of infiltrated carcinoma followingopen biopsy for the left chest wall tumor.A block resection of the mass was carried out with removal of the second to fouth ribs involved. The histological examination of the specimen showed chondrosarcoma of rib.Case 2: A 46-year-old man, first entered our clinic, with a compliant of a painful mass onthe upper right part of the chest with diagnosis of tuberculous abscess of rib and antituberculousadministration for several months. Ten months after the patient was readmitted to the clinic, becauseof gradual increase of the mass in size.The mass togethere with the fourth, fifth, sixth ribs had been resected.Diagnosis was chondrosarcoma of rib.Both of the patient's postoperative course were uneventful.A brief reveiw was made on 11 cases, 9 cases collected from the literature, 2 from our ownrecords.

Abstract

Elastic scattering of p̅ on p has been studied for cosθc.m. between -0.88 and -1.0 and Plab(p̅ ) between 0.70 and 2.16 GeV/c. The momentum dependence of the cross section shows a sharp dip at 0.9 GeV/c and a broad peaking around 1.4 GeV/c. The possibility of the peak resulting from direct formation of boson resonances has been studied. Alternatively, a diffraction model agrees qualitatively with our data and other elastic data at different angles.

Abstract

A counter-spark-chamber experiment has been performed to measure the annihilation reactions p̅ p π+ π and p̅ p K+ K in the energy region 0.7-2.4 GeV/c. The angular region covered in the experiment was 0.65≤cosθc.m.≤1.0. The data were taken in order to study heavy bosons (mass greater than two nucleons) that might couple to the p̅ p system. Our data have been combined with data from a previous BNL-Caltech experiment to give complete folded angular distributions and total cross sections for these reactions at 12 incident momenta. The folded two-pion annihilation data have been fitted by a simple Breit-Wigner resonance model in order to explore possible resonance behavior. The extreme-angle data have been interpreted in terms of particle exchanges, and through crossing symmetry comparisons are made with backward π p and K p scattering.

Abstract

Effects of dietary lactose and a lactase preparation on the intestinal absorption of calcium and magnesium were studied in 3 groups under 8 months of age; infants on a proprietary milk, infants on a lactose-free milk, and infants on a proprietary milk to which a lactase preparation was added. The intestinal absorption of both elements was reduced in infants on a lactose-free milk and enhanced in infants who were fed on a proprietary milk and given a lactase preparation.
