Several complexes of uranyl β-diketonates with pyridine N-oxides having varying relative degrees of steric hindrance to coordination (2-methyl-3-methyl-,4-methyl-and 2,6-dimethyl-pyridine N-oxide) were isolated by solvent extraction from the system UO22+-β-diketone-pyridine N-oxide in benzene. The β-diketones used were thenoyltrifluoroacetone (tta), benzoyltrifluoroacetone (btfa), acetyl-acetone (acac), benzoylacetone (ba) and dibenzoylmethane (dbm). The analytical data of these complexes lead to their formulation as UO2(β-diketone)2 pyridine N-oxide. Infrared and N.M.R. spectra of these complexes are discussed and interpreted in terms of the substituent constants of the pyridine N-oxide.

THE CLINICAL diagnosis of thyroid swellings is not always reliable in spite of the fact that the gland is easily accessible and large numbers of laboratory aids are available. The surgeon, when confronted with a nodule in the thyroid gland, is faced with the problem of treating it as a benign or a malignant lesion because of the reported high incidence of malignancy, particularly in the solitary nodules.1-4 If a nodule treated as benign subsequently turns out to be malignant on histopathology. a second operation becomes a necessity and entails greater risk. However, it is not feasible either to treat all nodules as malignant.The use of radioactive iodine also proves of no avail because this maneuver can only categorize the nodule as hot or cold. In previous communications12,13certain electrocardiographic changes, described under myopathic pattern, were reported in a series of patients suffering from various types of muscular dystrophy. The present report is a further elaboration of the cardiac status in these patients.

A case of ainhum and two of pseudoainhum observed at the V. J. Hospital at Amritsar (Northern India) are described. The first case occurred in a 13‐year‐old Hindu male and led to separation of digits (ainhum ), and the second and third , seen in a one‐day‐old and a five‐day‐old in fant, respectively, showed constricting bands, but did not progress to digital separation (pseudoa in hum ). The history of ainhum and pseudoainhum, from its first description by Clarke in 1860, is also briefly reviewed by the authors. Un cas de ainhum ainsi que deux cas de pseudoainhum observés au V.J. El segundo, un niño de un día de edad, y el otro de cinco días, pre sen tab an bandas constrictivas sin que la afección progresara hasta la separación digital (pseudodactilolisis espontánea). También se revisa brevemente la historia de estas afecciones a partir de la primera descripción hecha por Clarke en 1860.

Eosinophilic granuloma of the bone is a rare disease. It was described by Froser in 1935 and later on by Litchenstein and Jaffe6 in 1940. Children and young adults are most often affected. General health is unimpaired. Sometimes there is low-grade pyrexia, but usually there is absence of any systemic disturbance. The lesions are Situated in the flat bones, e. g., ribs, pelvis, or skull. Occasionally the long bones show the deposits. In fact, any bone, with the possible exception of those of the hand and feet, may be involved. The affected bone is rarefied, and its shell is expanded. The lesions are moderately tender; there is slight or dull pain. When the affected bone is in the vicinity of a joint, its movements are restricted. The proton magnetic resonance spectra of the synergistic complexes of uranyl β-diketonates with dihexyl sulphoxide as the neutral donor give a multiplet consisting of eight lines for the terminal methylene group protons adjacent to the sulphur atom of the sulphoxide and a triplet for the β-methylene protons. This conforms to an ABX2 pattern arising as a result of nonequivalence of the two protons of the terminal methylene group as a result of steric hindrance to free rotation about the C-S bond. The presence of such restricted rotation has been adduced as evidence for a direct donor-metal bond.

Canescin from Aspergillus malignus has the gross structure (VIII). It consists in fact of a mixture of the stereoisomers (XI) (canescin-A) and (X) (canescin-B). The structure is established by reactions and by spectra.

WE have previously presented1spectral results for Her X-1 in the energy range 20 to 100 keV and have set an upper limit of about 40% for the pulsating component. We have recently made further observations on this source with a telescope of much larger area and have obtained a longer exposure during its bright phase in the binary cycle (phase = 0.25) and almost in the middle of its ‘on’ period in the 35-d cycle (phase = 0.45 to 0.55). The new observations set an upper limit of 10% for the pulsating component in the energy range 20 to 45 keV which has important consequences on the models proposed for the X-ray emission features of Her X-1.

Hemangioendothelioma (angiosarcoma) of the breast is a rare tumor. Mackenzie,8 while describing one case, could trace reports of only 20. No case report has appeared in the subsequent literature, and an addition to the series already published should be worth while. REPORT OF CASE In October, 1961, a 32-year-old para V sought medical advice in the Professor of Surgery's unit about a diffuse swelling of her right breast. She had discovered it six months earlier when she was in the seventh month of pregnancy. The mass increased rapidly in size after the full-term normal delivery. She suckled her baby normally on both breasts for one month, but had to give up subsequently because of pain on the right side. During this period she also developed unproductive cough. CLINICAL EXAMINATION. —On clinical examination, the right breast showed diffuse enlargement. The covering skin was bluish-red and glossy; the veins were prominent,

THE intensity of X-rays in the energy range 22.5–154 keV from the X-ray source Cyg X–1 was monitored for about 3 h on the night of April 5, 1971, using a balloon-borne telescope. There were pronounced variations in the intensity and presumably energy spectrum of the source in time periods of the order of a few minutes.

WE report the observation of sudden changes in the intensity of Sco X-1 by a factor of about three in the energy interval 29.9–52.3 keV on December 22, 1968, between 0427 h and 0553 h UT. The observation was made with an X-ray telescope in a balloon flight from Hyderabad (latitude 17.6° N, longitude 78.5° E), India. The telescope consisted of an NaI(Tl) crystal with an area of 97.3 cm2and thickness 4 mm surrounded by both active and passive collimators. The passive collimator was a cylindrical graded shield of lead, tin and copper and the active collimator was a plastic scintillator surrounding the shield. The field of view of the telescope at f.w.h.m. was 18.6°. The axis of the telescope was inclined at an angle of 32° to the zenith. The telescope was mounted on an oriented platform programmed to look in four specified directions successively, spending about 4 min in each direction during a cycle of period about 16 min. The four specified directions were N(ϕ = 0), SW(ϕ=110°, with the convention ϕ = 90° being due west), S(ϕ = 180°, due south) and NE(ϕ = 310°). In this flight the orienter performed satisfactorily and the telescope picked up Sco X-1 in the south direction, Cyg X-1 in the direction NE(ϕ = 310°) and a new source in the direction SW(ϕ = 110°). In the north direction (ϕ = 0) there was no source during the period of observation and therefore the information on background X-rays was obtained from this direction. The observations of the short term changes of intensity of Sco X-1 are discussed here—the results from the other data will be published separately. A pair of crossed flux gate magnetometers provided information every 8.2 s on the azimuth of the telescope. The pulse heights from the X-ray detector were sorted into nine contiguous channels extending from 10 to 120 keV. Counting rates of several channels were combined for analysis to improve the statistics. A 241Am source came into the field of view of the telescope once in 15 min for about 30 s to provide in-flight calibration of the detector and this indicated that there was stable operation and no drift in the channel positions during the flight. The balloon was launched at 0200 h UT and reached the ceiling altitude at 0435 h. Between 0435 and 0530 h, the ceiling altitude was 7.6 ± 0.3 g cm−2. Just before the balloon reached the ceiling Sco X-1 was in the field of view of the telescope for 3 min 41 s when the balloon was ascending from 9.2 to 8.3 g cm−2. After the balloon reached ceiling, Sco X-1 was in the field of view on five occasions between 0443 and 0553 h. During the last observation, 0551–0553 h, however, the floating altitude of the balloon was a little lower, 8.5 g cm−2. The meridian transit of Sco X-1 was at 0454 h and the flight was terminated at 0615 h.

ACUTE mountain sickness and high altitude pulmonary oedema are two acute medical problems for troops in the Himalayan terrain who frequently shuttle between sea level and high altitudes (10,000–16,000 ft.). These two acute illnesses have some features in common: time lag (they rarely occur within 12 h of arrival at the altitude or 96 h after arrival), throbbing headache, muscular cramps and pulmonary congestion. We have studied the acute circulatory response to high altitude hypoxia and investigated the extent to which shifts in the circulating blood volumes, if any, could be related to the time lag and clinical features of these acute illnesses.
