The article reports on a lack of communication between business educators and corporations. A speech by Dr. Alfred Watson at the American Marketing Association's January 1946 meeting is discussed. The Curtis Publishing Company's efforts in increase communication with the education field are presented. Curtis has mailed a list of research materials to numerous business teachers. The materials on Curtis' list are described; they include consumer surveys, statistical studies, government data analysis and population studies. The article reports on the success of the Curtis initiative.

The article presents short articles and reports about ongoing research related to comparative sociology. A great amount of literature has appeared on the Indian caste system. In the United States, the caste theory has divided sociologists into two groups One group headed by W.L. Warner has considered the relationship of the Negro and white populations in the United States as a form of the caste system. The other group of the caste theorists including Charles C. Johnson present arguments against applying the term "caste" to both India and the United States. Although Charles C. Johnson sees many similarities in the social stratification system in the United States and the caste system of India, he still objects to identifying both systems as a caste. An attempt will be made to examine the validity of the arguments raised by these American caste theorists and to inquire further whether the objections raised by them are appropriate to the social system in changing India. It is not quite clear whether these caste theorists mean to say that a person cannot change his social status, or that transition from one caste to another is not possible. It is relatively true that people cannot change their caste status which is hereditary, but they may nevertheless rise in social status. Socioeconomic mobility in the "actual caste system" of modern India is not only possible within castes, but across levels of castes. Unfortunately this has not been possible in the United States because of the conspicuous visibility of color. No doubt a Negro may aspire to and achieve a position of high social status, but life chance differentials tend to restrict both his spatial and social mobility. His mobility is largely within the limits of segregation.

The article discusses the expectations of sales management from industrial research. The author believes the potential of research is highly reliant on management. He says that managers are typically strong-minded and depending on their past experiences, may embrace or reject sales and market research. Communication in the process is essential, as sales executives typically focus on immediate issues. He lists nine items sales management should expect from research, including information about the extent to which products are meeting customer needs and desires, information as to the size of each product's market, and an analysis of the competition, among others. The author believes marketing research is essential to sales management to promote effectiveness and avoid marketing mistakes.

In journalism research the past 20 years have seen a trend toward study of the communication process in its relation to society. Methodologically, increasing use has been made of the quantitative methods of the behavioral sciences, but by no means to the exclusion of the qualitative approach of the humanities. Rapid progress has been sparked by the growing availability of basic data, the development of research tools, and increasing institutional support for field research. Communication effect, however, remains a little understood area. For the purpose of this article, "journalism research" is defined as research on the printed media of mass communication. It is not being equated with research done in journalism schools; their research is not limited to print. Neither is it being equated with research on newspapers, which is usually considered to be the central subject matter of "journalism." The article talks about the broad sweep of research on newspapers, magazines, and books, in this country, during the 20 years which are spanned by the distinguished history of the "Public Opinion Quarterly."

This article presents the minutes of meetings held by the Executive Committee of the Association of Departments & Administrators in Speech Communication (ADASC) in Saint Louis, Missouri from January 3 to 5, 1974. The committee resolves to: thank the action caucus on Urban Communication for its report; express interest in the pursuit of scholarly identification and investigation of urban communication; encourage interested scholars to meet, discuss, research communication in all its forms as it operates in the urban environment and to publish the results; recommend the development of urban communication curricula and programs; promote these steps by encouraging further conferences to study the problems of urban communication by holding as action caucus at the December 1974 ADASC Conference in Chicago, Illinois.
