Carbon paper is one of the most widely used gas diffusion layer substrate materials due to its stable performance, relatively low cost, and easy for subsequent processing. Water-soluble phenolic resin, which is more ecologically friendly than alcohol-soluble phenolic resin, was used to prepare carbon paper as the precursor of the carbon matrix. And the effect of different resin solution concentrations on the properties of carbon paper was explored. The results showed that the graphitization, electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of carbon paper increased with the increase of resin solution concentration. When the concentration of resin solution was 20 wt%, the performance of carbon paper was relatively optimal. The graphitization of the carbon paper reached 65.45%, the porosity reached 80.74%, the resistance value at 1 MPa pressure was only 7.61 mΩ cm2, the tensile strength was 1.57 MPa, and the elastic modulus was 1210.98 MPa. Enzymes derived from microbial sources have gained increasing popularity in industrial applications over the past decades. Despite the high production cost, alkaline proteases have wide applications in industries such as tanneries, food production, and detergents. In recent years, there has been a shift towards utilizing natural carbon sources for cultivating microorganisms and extracting proteases in order to reduce production costs. This study aimed to investigate the biochemical and kinetic properties of protease enzymes obtained from Aspergillus niger cultivated in a paper waste medium and compare with the enzyme produced in a basal medium. Glucose is a more favorable carbon source compared to cellulose, so paper waste was pretreated with cellulose-degrading bacteria to convert cellulose into smaller carbohydrates. After the growth of A. niger in basal and combinational media, the enzymatic properties were compared between the extracted enzymes by using casein as substrate. The results demonstrated that A. niger could produce protease enzymes in the paper waste medium similar to the basal medium with more than 5-fold cost saving. The specific activity of the enzymes isolated from the basal and paper waste media was calculated to be 184.95 ± 10.56 U ml−1 and 169.88 ± 11.05 U ml−1, respectively. Carbon sources did not affect the optimum pH and temperature of the protease enzyme, which were found to be 8 and 37 °C, respectively. This study provides valuable insights into the production of alkaline protease from A. niger using a combinational medium (paper waste pretreated by cellulose-degrading bacteria), offering a cost-effective approach for industrial applications. This paper describes the fabrication and characterization of porous SiC ceramics derived from highly-filled preceramic papers. The SiC ceramics were obtained by spark plasma sintering of stacked preceramic papers at temperatures of 2100 and 2200 °C under pressures of 5–60 MPa for 10 min. The microstructure and phase composition were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. Gas permeation tests were performed using hydrogen permeation cell at room temperature. It is revealed that the porosity of sintered SiC can be varied from 9 to 45 % depending on the sintering parameters. The shrinkage of the materials during spark plasma sintering occurs in four stages. The linear shrinkage value of the material increases from 7 to 47 % at 2100 °C and from 20 to 50 % for the samples sintered at 2100 and 2200 °C, respectively. Correlation dependencies between porosity and mechanical properties of the fabricated SiC were established. The obtained porous SiC ceramics exhibit high bending strength of 165 MPa and gas permeation flux of 78 molH 2 /m2/s at the porosity of 36 % that make it suitable for ceramic-based membranes. Aerogel composites reinforced by fibers have found extensive applications in the field of thermal insulation and energy conservation. However, the composites are hindered by their high infrared radiation transmittance and weak interface adhesion in practical applications. Herein, we designed and prepared a novel thin composite called 'fiber/whisker/aerogel paper' (SWAP) with a thickness of less than 1 mm. The SWAP integrated SiC nanowhiskers (SiC nw) as opacifiers and ultrafine SiO 2 fibers as reinforcement, fabricated through wet manufacturing and sol-gel process. The 'fiber/aerogel paper' (SAP) and SWAP exhibited low thermal conductivity at room temperature, measuring 0.025 W/(m·K) and 0.033 W/(m·K), respectively. Additionally, they exhibited low densities of 0.195 g/cm3 and 0.225 g/cm3, respectively. Notably, SWAP exhibited excellent high-temperature insulation performance, primarily due to its low infrared transmittance (50% at 3 μm). The incorporation of SiC nw and ultrafine SiO 2 fibers collectively enhanced the interfacial adhesion with the aerogel matrix even amidst rigorous testing (weight loss less than 3%). SWAP also demonstrated flexibility, high thermal stability, hydrophobicity, and flame resistance. Furthermore, a comprehensive investigation into the performance variations and influencing g factors of the material was conducted under different heat treatment conditions. The ZrO 2 fiber paper exhibits excellent thermal insulation properties, however, its limited mechanical strength and insufficient thermal stability hinder its widespread applications. The composite fiber papers, using mullite fibers possessing a high aspect ratio and exceptional thermal stability combined with ZrO 2 fibers, were fabricated via a vacuum-assisted filtration method. This method involved the successive stacking of composite fibers with alumina sol, using vacuum-induced directed water flow to create a layered structure reminiscent of nacre. The layered structure of the nacre, which demonstrates remarkable strength and hardness, has also served as a source of inspiration for the architectural design of the fiber paper. The tensile strength of pure ZrO 2 fiber paper was significantly enhanced by the addition of 7 wt% mullite fibers, resulting in a remarkable increase to 0.1805 kN/m. The paper exhibited exceptional resistance to bending, maintaining 96 % of its bending strength even after undergoing 100 cycles. The thermal shrinkage of the composite paper, containing 15 wt% mullite fibers, was reduced from 17.75 % observed in pure ZrO 2 fiber paper to a mere 1.32 % after undergoing heat treatment at a temperature of 1300 °C for 2 h. The composite paper, measuring 5 mm in thickness and consisting of 7 wt% compositions, displayed exceptional thermal insulation properties when exposed to a hot side temperature of 1370 °C. • Liquid water saturation in carbon paper is measured • Quantifies the capillary trapping effect of isolated water drops in carbon papers • Proposes a model describing liquid water drops transport In previous macroscopic average models of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), liquid water was assumed to be continuous throughout the carbon paper. The transport of disconnected water drops in carbon paper has long been neglected in these models, which tend to underestimate water saturation in carbon paper. This study proposes a two-phase flow model that considers the transport of disconnected water drops to simulate the air-water transport in carbon paper. The proposed model was established based on the relationship between capillary force and liquid water saturation, and this relationship was obtained by conducting centrifuge experiments. In the centrifuge experiment, initially, the water saturation inside the carbon paper sample was one, and the centrifugal acceleration was zero. As the centrifugal acceleration increased, the water saturation decreased owing to the centrifugal force. After twenty seconds, the water saturation no longer decreases because the centrifugal force on the liquid water is balanced by the capillary force. Centrifugal acceleration was used to evaluate the capillary force. When the centrifugal acceleration was 185 m s − 2 , the saturation of the water drops in the balanced state was 32.0%. As the centrifugal acceleration increases to 739 m s − 2 , the saturation decreases to 6.5%. According to the experimental results, a function correlating the saturation and centrifugal acceleration, that is, the capillary force, was established. Finally, the results show that the centrifugal acceleration is more than 18.5 times that of the gravitational acceleration, indicating that the effect of gravity on the motion of water drops is negligible. The catalytic ozonation processes with continuous-flow reactors were used for pulp and paper mill wastewater treatment. For the natures of low weight, large specific surface area, excellent physical strength and stable chemical characteristics, the porous ceramsite was chosen for catalytic ozonation of wastewater in the present study, and the practical application parameters of the system were investigated for the actual pulp and paper mill wastewater (PPMW) in the continuous-flow reactor including temperatures, feeding flow rate, O 3 flow rate and O 3 dosage. The optimum experimental conditions were obtained (T = 25 ℃, feeding flow rate = 0.25 L/min, O 3 flow rate = 0.5 L/min, O 3 dosage = 15 g/L) for the process of catalytic ozonation. The results show that the effluent concentration of COD decreases from about 200 mg/L to 10 mg/L, namely the removal efficiency is about 95 %. The stability of the catalyst over time was tested in the continuous-flow reactor for 48 days, confirming that the porous ceramsite exhibits good performance in 30 days. The reusability of the catalyst was studied after the used catalyst was washed with Milli-Q water and ethanol, exhibiting good catalytic activity of the regenerated catalyst in three cycles. The fluorescent excitation-emission matrix (EEM), UV–vis analysis and GC–MS analysis were used for analyzing the organic pollutants in raw PPMW and after treatment. These results indicate that the process of catalytic ozonation with porous ceramsite has a high treatment efficiency on PPMW, and the continuous-flow reactor can be more practically used for a full-scale community PPMW application at a mill level. Photocatalytic water splitting is a highly promising future energy technology. In contrast to the extensive work on particulate photocatalysts, there is still a lack of sufficient investigation for regularized photocatalysts. Here, from perylene diimide polymer (PDIP) and commercial carbon paper (CP), we develop a self-assembled PDIP/CP photocatalyst sheet that is easily scalable and can be used for photocatalytic water oxidation. Driven by strong interfacial π-π interactions, the PDIP spontaneously adsorbs onto the CP, which leads to a narrowed band gap, down-shifted VB edge, and enhanced separation of the photogenerated charge carriers of the PDIP. Under visible light, the PDIP/CP photocatalyst sheet shows significantly enhanced photocatalytic water oxidation activity (4 h cumulative oxygen evolution is 1.7 times higher than that of the powder-suspended system) and considerable cycling stability. Given its superior structure, the abundance of surface functional groups, and low cost, cotton fiber filtration paper can be used as the support for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction catalysts (OER) instead of copper foam (CF), nickel foam (NF), or carbon cloth (CC). Herein, the chemical plating method was used to create thin self-supporting electrodes based on cotton fiber filtration paper (FP). The Co-Ni-P amorphous nanospheres can be uniformly dispersed on the self-supporting FP due to its porous structure and oxygen functional groups. The Co-Ni-P/FP electrode has an overpotential as low as 125 mV for HER and 320 mV for OER at the current density of 10 mA cm−2. Additionally, according to density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the Co atom added to the Ni-P nanosphere can lead to considerably more charge accumulation around the Co and Ni active sites, which greatly encourages the HER and OER processes. The reuse of waste papers by conversion into valuable carbon materials has received considerable attention for diverse applications such as energy storage and water purification. However, traditional methods for converting waste papers into materials with suitable properties for specific applications are often complex and ineffective, involving consecutive carbonization and activation steps. Herein, we propose a simple one-step microwave (MW)-assisted synthesis for preparing waste paper-derived porous carbons (WPCs) for energy storage and water purification. Through a 30-min synthesis, WPCs with graphitic structure and high specific surface area were successfully produced. The fabricated WPCs exhibited outstanding charge storage capability with a maximum specific capacitance of 237.7 F g−1. Additionally, the WPC demonstrates a high removal efficiency for various dyes, achieving a maximum removal efficiency of 95.0% for methylene blue. The developed one-step MW synthesis not only enables the production of porous carbon from waste paper, but also offers a viable approach to address solid waste management challenges while simultaneously yielding valuable materials. [Display omitted] • Paper mill sludge ash (pm SA) was used as catalysts to activate PMS. • Aerobic calcination was conducive to the exposure/formation of octahedral FeIII. • The O O bond fracture was the root pathway for FeIV O production. • The release of solid calcium in pm SA could inhibit the active decay of FeIV O. • The pm SA could effectively degrade similar pollutants in near-neutral water. The excellent performance of high-valent iron-oxo species (FeIV O) in the degradation of pollutants by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) had attracted much attention. However, the generation and reaction mechanisms were still unclear. In this study, iron-rich paper mill sludge was used as a raw material for the first time to prepare iron-based catalysts with abundant octahedral FeIII sites (Fe oct III). The results showed that the highest content of Fe oct III was found in the paper mill sludge ash obtained by aerobic calcination at 800 °C (pm SA800), and the pm SA800 could exhibit excellent catalytic activity (0.4785 min−1) and stability during the oxytetracycline (OTC) degradation process. The characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further indicated that the Fe oct III was the dominant active site for FeIV O production. PMS tended to be adsorbed on two adjacent Fe oct III sites to form a [Fe oct III-OSO 2 OO(H)-Fe oct III] complex with a two-site adsorption configuration. Subsequently, the O O and O H bonds in [Fe oct III-OSO 2 OO(H)-Fe oct III] broken by absorbing energy, generating FeIV O. It's worth noting that the Ca species of pm SA800 effectively stabilized the pH of the reaction solution, which ensured the stable and continuous production of FeIV O. Waste paper and tyre are typical solid wastes with distinct composition. Their pyrolysis could generate varied volatiles that may interact with each other or with resulting char. In this study, the co-pyrolysis of waste paper and tyre was investigated at 400 and 600 ºC, with the focus on understanding the interaction of the volatiles on evolution of the products. The results show that the interaction of the volatiles at 400 ºC forms more gaseous products like CO and CO 2 , while the interactions of the heavier organics at 600 ºC forms more oil (49.3% vs 42.6%). The interaction of the volatiles also affects the generation of sulfur-containing organics and diminishes the paper-derived aldehydes and ketones or the heavy organics with the π-conjugated structures in the oil. In addition, the volatile-char interactions exist and form the char of higher carbon content through promoting carbonization and deoxygenation reactions, generating char of higher thermal stability and higher hydrophilicity via tailoring functional group, pore structures and morphologies of the char. Peer-reviewed conferences, the main publication venues in CS, rely critically on matching highly qualified reviewers for each paper. Because of the growing scale of these conferences, the tight timelines on which they operate, and a recent surge in explicitly dishonest behavior, there is now no alternative to performing this matching in an automated way. This paper introduces Large Conference Matching (LCM) , a novel reviewer–paper matching approach that was recently deployed in the 35th AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI 2021), and has since been adopted (wholly or partially) by other conferences including ICML 2022, AAAI 2022-2024, and IJCAI 2022-2024. LCM has three main elements: (1) collecting and processing input data to identify problematic matches and generate reviewer–paper scores; (2) formulating and solving an optimization problem to find good reviewer–paper matchings; and (3) a two-phase reviewing process that shifts reviewing resources away from papers likely to be rejected and towards papers closer to the decision boundary. Also, the CF/Co/C 2DIFs can attenuate microwaves over a broad frequency range via dielectric/magnetic dual loss and 2DIFs, which boosts their loss ability and matching performance. Here, we have integrated cellulose paper-based triboelectric material and electrode in one sheet by using multi-layer forming technology in paper industry; the upper triboelectric layer shows excellent triboelectric positive performance, hydrophobicity and acid and alkali resistance, while the bottom electrode exhibits promise conductivity. The all CPTENGs can yield a maximum open-circuit voltage (V OC) of 227.1 V, a short-circuit current (I SC) of 6.9 μA. Furthermore, the V OC values of the all CPTENGs increase from 0.02 V to 225.1 V at the load resistance of 100 Ω∼10 GΩ; and a power density of 520 mW·m−2 is also obtained at a load resistance of 30 MΩ. Moreover, the V OC of CPTENGs not only retains up to 78 % of its initial value at a high relative humidity of 90 %, but also almost maintains unchanged in a wide range of the pH environment (pH = 1∼13). More importantly, the CPTENGs can be readily matched with paper-based zinc supercapacitor (P-ZISC) to act as an all paper based self-charging power system (PSCPS). In this research, Fe 2 O 3 nanorod arrays grown on carbon fiber paper were studied, and carbon-coated Fe 2 O 3 (Fe 2 O 3 @C) and sulfurized Fe 2 O 3 @C (Fe 2 O 3 @C-S) were fabricated by carbon coating and sulfurization processes. To promote the application of these materials in supercapacitors, their electrochemical properties were systematically investigated. Based on the results, the materials obtained utilized a pseudocapacitive mechanism for energy storage. Specifically, Fe 2 O 3 exhibited a moderate specific capacitance and extraordinary cycling stability, and no degradation was observed after 10,000 cycles. Impressively, sulfurization greatly enhanced the rate capability and specific capacitance of the sample. As a result, Fe 2 O 3 @C-S attained a specific capacitance of 976.4 mF cm–2 at 4 mA cm–2 and a robust rate capability of 97.30% at 20 mA cm–2, outperforming Fe 2 O 3 @C (84.39%) and Fe 2 O 3 (70.55%) and demonstrating good cycling stability (92.9%). Notably, Fe 2 O 3 @C-S was active as a positive electrode material; thus, a symmetric supercapacitor was assembled, which yielded a volumetric energy density of 1.46 mWh cm–3 at 16.71 mW cm–3 and maintained an energy density of 0.91 mWh cm–3 even at 145.63 mW cm–3. Glutathione (GSH) acts a crucial role in the normal operation of manifold life activities and is closely bound up with many human diseases. Here, a SERS-colorimetric bimodal paper-based biosensor based on Mn-doped CDs/silver nanoparticles (Mn-CDs/AgNPs) has been fabricated for high-efficiency quantification of intracellular GSH. The Mn-CDs/AgNPs with fine oxidase-like characteristic and SERS enhancement ability has been assembled onto the Whatman filter paper (WFP) to cleverly fabricate paper chip (Mn-CDs/AgNPs@WFP) which can trigger the oxidation of colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue TMBox and simultaneously enhance the SERS signal of TMBox. However, the introduction of GSH inhibits the oxidation of TMB, leading to color fading of paper chip and diminishment of SERS signal. Considering this, the bimodal paper-based sensing platform can be exploited for SERS-colorimetric detection of GSH, manifesting excellent selectivity, reliable stability, and satisfactory precision. The detection limits of SERS and colorimetric detection modes are as low as 0.41 μM and 0.53 μM, respectively. Novel psychoactive substances (NPS) in the form of impregnated papers delivered to prisoners are of particular concern in prison settings, where they are commonly used by vaping. The purpose of this study was to create a qualitative method for identifying the various emerging NPS impregnated onto paper samples sent to prisoners. It helps to demonstrate that these findings can be used to predict drug prevalence and trends in prisons. Between 2018 and 2020, 1250 non-judicial paper samples seized from 12 English prisons were analysed to determine the NPSs being circulated. Approximately 1 cm2 paper were cut and added to 50 % (v/v) methanol in LCMS-grade water. Vortex-mixing was used to prepare extracts (30 min). Q-TOF LC/MS was used to screen the extracts. This study showed that synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonist (SCRA) was the most common drug group detected in impregnated paper seizures in English prisons between 2018 and 2020, followed by cocaine, heroin type drugs (A) and amphetamine, ketamine type drugs (B). Male prisons had a higher prevalence of SCRAs, whereas female prisons had a higher prevalence of A drugs. Furthermore, lower security prisons were found to have a higher prevalence of B drugs, pregabalin, gabapentin type drugs (C), and abused and prescription drugs than higher security prisons which unveiled a higher prevalence of nicotine. The findings of this study have revealed new information about drug use in prisons. Cellulose is now considered as an appealing environment friendly material for the development of sustainable separators for rechargeable batteries. This study thus aims to develop high performance paper based ceramic separators with superior electrolyte wettability (>170 %), high thermal stability (>200 °C) and excellent flame safety. While developing paper based ceramic separator, extensive studies are carried out to understand thenature and functionality of different nano-structured ceramic materials (Al 2 O 3 , BaTiO 3 and ZrO 2) impregnated in paper matrix. Nano-ZrO 2 facilitates an effective pathway for Li +-ion transport (t Li + = 0.51), whereas BaTiO 3 and Al 2 O 3 ceramics show moderate Li +-ion transport properties (t Li+ of 0.29 and 0.30 respectively). Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) measurement clearly reveals that ZrO 2 exhibits more interfacial compatibility with the electrodes (MCMB and LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2) compared to the other two ceramic separators during full cell operation. The developed paper separators show excellent electrochemical properties in terms of cycling (tested 300 cycles), multi-electrode compatibility and rate capabilities at different current densities of 0.1–1.2 mAcm−2. The pre- and post-electrochemical EIS data reveal that ZrO 2 based impregnation offers significantly lower charge transfer resistance compared to the other two separators. The surface properties of melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) impregnated paper decorative panels are unsatisfactory, characterized by brittle surfaces, poor abrasion resistance, and limited flame retardancy. A modification was introduced to the MUF resin by incorporating a blend of polyelectrolyte complex polyethyleneimine (PEI)-phytic acid (PA) and Nano-Al 2 O 3 with the aim of enhancing the surface properties of the decorative panel. The modified resin underwent characterization, and subsequent analyses were conducted to investigate the properties of both the modified impregnated paper and the decorative panel. The results showed that the thermal stability of the modified resin was improved with a curing temperature of 124 °C. In comparison to the control, the modified impregnated paper showed an increase of 146.0 % in tensile strength and 154.5 % in elongation at break. The improved toughness of the modified MUF-impregnated paper resulted in a notable upsurge in both surface bond strength and cracking resistance of the decorative panel. The combustion test results indicated that the modified impregnated had a LOI value of 40.0 % and self-extinguishing behavior. In addition, due to the inclusion of Nano-Al 2 O 3 , the decorative panel exhibited a low abrasion value of only 14.1 mg/100r. Overall, the technology proposed in this study can improve the surface properties of decorative panels, increase their added value, and provide a new strategy for modifying MUF resin in the impregnated paper-decorated wood-based panels industry and for researchers. Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are promising materials due to their rich active sites and straightforward synthesis. However, their limited conductivity and electron transfer inefficiency hinder practical applications. This study utilizes a simple one-pot synthesis approach to produce a tungsten-disulfide (WS 2) and iron-cobalt Prussian blue analogue composite (WS 2 -PBA), enhancing conductivity and electron transfer rate performance. Through the inclusion of sodium citrate into the solution, the S-edge site concentration of WS 2 increases. This augmentation introduces additional active sites and defects into the catalyst, enhancing its catalytic activity. The effectiveness of the WS 2 -PBA 3D-Origami paper device for lactate detection in sweat is also evaluated for biomedical applications. The device demonstrated a robust relationship between the lactate concentration and current intensity (R2 = 0.997), with a detection limit of 1.83 mM. Additionally, this platform has successfully detected lactate in clinical sweat, correlating with the high-performance liquid chromatography test results, suggesting promising prospects for clinical diagnosis. Natural ester insulating oil, as a new development trend to replace mineral oil, can be significantly improved by adding nanoparticles to them. The diffusion behavior of H 3 O+ in paper cellulose and nano-SiO 2 -modified soybean oil-based natural ester insulating oil insulating system has been investigated using molecular dynamics in this article. The results indicate that the incorporation with nanoparticles is effective in mitigating the impact of temperature on the diffusion behavior of H 3 O+ in oil-paper insulation. Compared with the unmodified model, the nano-modified model results in a significant reduction in the concentration distribution of H 3 O+ in paper cellulose. The hydroxyl and ether bonds in paper cellulose will interact with H 3 O+ to generate hydrogen bonds and destroy its original hydrogen bonding network, while nanoparticles can inhibit diffusion by adsorbing H 3 O+ through hydroxyl oxygen atoms. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered one of the most promising sorbent materials for passive indoor moisture control. However, the powder form of MOF is challenging to use in the built environment. Typical shaping methods like pellets, beads, and coating can lead to problems like partial pore blocking, insufficient mechanical stability, amorphization, and low material utilization. Here, we report a new sustainable MOF paper sheet comprising 25% cellulosic fibers and 75% MOF MIL-100(Fe) powder. The porous polymer matrix provides good support and fixation for MOF particles, so it's more applicable in the built environment. The crystalline and pore structure characteristics of the MOF in the membrane are well preserved. Hydro characteristic test results show that MIL-100(Fe) paper sheet has high water vapor uptake, S-shape isotherm, mild regeneration condition, and high MBV. Then, a numerical model was developed to calculate the relation between a material's MBV and its thickness. MIL-100(Fe) paper sheet with the most efficient thickness was applied as wallpaper in a building energy simulation model. The simulation result shows that the MIL-100(Fe) paper sheet is promising for passive indoor moisture control. It can remove about 45%-55% of the latent cooling load in most European climate types. In this study, a porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (COF Fe/CoP-Ph) with bimetal-nitrogen-coordinate centers (M − N 4) were constructed via Schiff base reaction. The synergistic effect of the highly exposed M − N 4 bimetallic active sites and the unique topology overcame the self-limitation of nanozyme, resulting in a significant enhancement of the triple-enzyme mimetic activities of COF Fe/CoP-Ph , namely oxidase (OXD)-, peroxidase (POD)-, and catalase (CAT)-like activities. Simultaneously, a multiple enzyme-driven cascade catalysis strategy for signal amplification was proposed utilizing the OXD- and POD-like mimetic mechanisms of COF Fe/CoP-Ph , enabling the colorimetric determination of malathion without the addition exogenous H 2 O 2. The established colorimetric sensor exhibited an exceptional linear relationship within the range of 1–18 μM and a low detection limit of 11 nM. Subsequently, a portable smartphone platform was developed by integrating paper chip, facilitating successful malathion point-of-care testing (POCT) in real samples. Plastic-coated paper straws are insufficient to solve the plastic pollution problem because microplastics are formed during their degradation. In this study, upgraded paper straws were prepared by coating with biodegradable sodium alginate/cellulose nanofiber/stearic acid (SA/CNF/STA) on the surface of paper without additional adhesives. The tensile strength of the paper was enhanced synergistically by the coated SA and CNF after cross-linking with Ca2+ ions, reaching a maximum (26.46 MPa) when the mass ratio of SA to CNF was 4:1. The straws were prepared by spirally winding coated paper into tubes. Subsequent STA modification with different concentration (1–40%) improved the water stability of the paper straws. The paper straws exhibited excellent mechanical properties (including 13.45 MPa of flexural strength, 13.30 MPa of compressive strength) and hydrophobicity (103.67° of maximum water contact angle). After 130 days of soil burial, the paper straws were completely degraded. The comprehensive performance of prepared straws exceeds that of commercially available products in the same category, and they are safe and biodegradable. • A distance-based paper sensor for the detection of DNase I is developed. • The quantitative detection of DNase I is achieved by measuring the watermark on the indicator paper. • This method exhibits the advantages of the aptamer-mediated enzyme cascade reaction, low-cost, and label-free detection. DNase I is proven to be an early predictive molecule for a variety of diseases, which is important for early diagnosis and clinical detection of diseases. Herein, we demonstrate a distance-based paper sensor to detect DNase I via an enzymatic cascade reaction mediated by the thrombin aptamer. In the presence of DNase I, the thrombin is able to clot the plasma normally because the aptamer chain is hydrolyzed by DNase I and cannot bind thrombin properly to inhibit thrombin activity. The concentration of DNase I is negatively correlated with the volume of mobile phase in sample solution, and it can be quantified by measuring the flow distance of water on the pH indicator strip. The distance-based paper sensor has good specificity, and the detection limit is 2 × 10−2 U/mL. In addition, it can be used for DNase I analysis in human serum samples to show its efficacy in the early diagnosis of diseases associated with DNase I activity. Metalloid nanoparticles (MNPs) possess unique physicochemical properties but are challenging to create through biological or chemical routes. Using Pulsed Laser Ablation in Liquid (PLAL), Mg–C MNPs are fabricated from powders. The produced nanocolloids were ablated after the target was removed to tailor the particle size. MNPs with a mean size 300 nm could be reduced to 60 nm. Alternatively, MNPs with a mean size of 60 nm could be increased to 90 nm. The increase/decrease in size is controlled by the laser processing parameters and showcases the ability of PLAL for real-world applications that require meticulous control of size. The as-fabricated nanocolloids were successfully inkjet printed on paper, achieving a low resistivity of 75 Ω/square after 60 prints, highlighting their potential in printed electronics. To address a historical research gap, this article explored the impact of PLAL processing parameters, including fluence (1–2 J/cm2), pulse width (0.2–0.9 ns), repetition rate (10–20 kHz), and pH, factors often overlooked which is partly limiting applications. Sustainable degrowth offers effective alternative strategies for tackling social and environmental problems such as climate crisis, resource depletion, biodiversity loss, and species hecatomb. However, it plays a marginal role in policy. Moreover, researchers need to operationalise many degrowth proposals in a more sufficient way for the policy. This mainly conceptual-methodological article conceptualises the problem of sustainable degrowth in policy as the problem of knowledge utilisation. How well research papers on the topic adapt to the needs of policy-makers is an important factor influencing this utilisation. This adaptation is under the control of researchers and may be seen as a necessary first step in the introduction of degrowth proposals into policy-making and further implementation. I argue that translating research papers into legislative drafts by researchers can be understood as adaptation of these papers to the policy-makers' needs. This is because the law can be understood as universal basis of public policies and fundamental language to express these policies. The legal system has a systematic, hierarchical, and logical structure while its language tends to be precise, clear, and unambiguous. Legal language may also be salient for many policy-makers. I labelled this way of adaptation as the Translational Legal Approach to Knowledge Utilisation (TLA). It can be applied beyond texts on sustainable degrowth as well. Based on the literature review, I theoretically and conceptually discuss the aforementioned hypotheses by looking at the corresponding criteria of research adaptation with characteristics of law and legal language. I provide the strongest support for the theses that translation of research papers into provisions of legislative drafts can increase readability, comprehensibility, precision, and operationalisation of degrowth research proposals, as well as helps to give them more systemic nature and incorporate policy-makers' context. After that, we demonstrated the multi-functional sensing ability of the LD-ePADs by detecting diverse model analytes, including small molecules (i.e., lead ions [Pb2+]), free radicals (i.e., peroxide [H 2 O 2 ]), and macromolecules (i.e., Alkaline phosphatase [ALP]). Upon investigation, it exhibits a fair detection limit of 5.19 (±0.21) µM for Pb2+, 48.66 (±0.31) µM for H 2 O 2 , and 0.48 (±0.02) U/L for ALP. The LD-ePADs' outstanding repeatability, stability, abundance of catalytic active sites, remarkable tunability, and potential for nano-bioengineering emphasized their tremendous commercial feasibility. Herein, a paper-based polydiacetylene (PDA) sensor array is prepared from four diacetylene (DA) monomers modified with imidazole and its derivates. DA inks derived from the four monomers are directly coated on A4 paper via inkjet printing and converted to PDAs by UV irradiation with high stability and uniformity. The printed PDA sensors show solvent induced irreversible color transition upon exposure to organic solvents and water. The diverse colorimetric responses integrally provide unique color change patterns which are capable of distinguishing 11 distinct solvents including ethanol and water. The pattern-based sensing performance further promotes the fabrication of spot-matrix sensor array that could generate distinct color difference maps towards different ethanol contents with multiple sensing elements and a widely dynamic sensing range from 0 to 100%. Combined with RGB value radar map and principal component analysis (PCA), the sensor array also displays excellent ability of differentiating ethanol content from 5 to 100%. With this proposed method, commercial spirit samples with different ethanol contents or gasolines with different amounts of ethanol are readily distinguished and identified through naked eye and PCA score plot. Furthermore, to facilitate usability, a smartphone app is developed and integrated with the PDA sensor array, which directly enables read-out of the ethanol content in real liquor samples with high accuracy. The assay integrates molybdenum disulfide nanozymes for signal amplification with zeolitic imidazolate framework-90 (ZIF-90) for selective ATP recognition and nanozyme regulation. In the presence of ATP, the intact chitosanase-encapsulated ZIF-90 structure was disintegrated to release chitosanase and thus hydrolyzed chitosan hydrogel, decreasing the viscosity of chitosan solution. Moreover, elimination of ZIF-90 inhibitory effect reactivated the catalytic activity of MoS 2 nanozyme, resulting in the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce obvious color change. The analytical signals, combining the distance- and colorimetric- readout, were directly displayed on filter paper without further processed. The proposed dual-readout viscosity flow sensor exhibited remarkable sensitivity for ATP detection with detection limits down to 0.038 nM with the distance-readout and 0.057 nM for the colorimetric-readout. Furthermore, we developed an integrated paper kit with a printed scale and color card for standardized on-site analysis without instrumentation. In this work, we present a novel approach to control the dynamic phosphorescence color and stimulus response properties of CQDs coated on paper by fine-tuning the surface functional groups of the CQDs. Specifically, histidine and 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine was separately used to prepare N, O co-doped CQDs (NOCQDs) and N-doped CQDs (NCQDs), respectively. These CQDs were further coated on filter paper substrates to achieve water and heating cascade stimulus–response RTP. These stimuli-responsive properties of NOCQDs can be modulated by deprotonating their surface oxygen-containing groups. ChatGPT could allow students to plagiarize the content of their coursework with little risk of detection. Little is known about undergraduate willingness to use AI tools. In this study, psychology undergraduates (N = 160) from the United Kingdom, indicated their willingness to use, and history of using, ChatGPT to write university assignments. Almost a third (32%) indicated that they would use such tools; 15% indicated that they had used them already. Neither personality (conscientiousness, agreeableness, Machiavellianism, narcissism), academic performance, nor study skills self-efficacy could predict future use of AI tools. A novel Degree Apathy Scale was the only significant predictor. Willingness to use AI tools was greater when the risk of getting caught was low, and punishment was light, particularly for those high in degree apathy. Findings suggest that degree apathy is a key risk factor in academic misconduct. Early detection of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is critical due to a lack of effective treatment for toxoplasmosis.This study established a simple, cost-effective, and rapid colorimetric detection method for T. gondii. The entire testing process, from sample collection to results, takes only 0.5 h. These characteristics fulfill the demands of researchers seeking rapid target detection with minimal equipment reliance. For genomic extraction, this study evaluated the ability of two filter papers to capture genomes. A rapid genomic extraction device combined with the two filter papers was designed to simplify the genomic extraction process, which was completed within 10 min and increased the detection sensitivity tenfold. The method utilized a simplified primer design for isothermal amplification, namely allosteric strand displacement (ASD), and employed an underutilized commercial color indicator, Bromothymol Blue (BTB), for signal output. Compared with other reported indicators, BTB exhibited a more pronounced color change, shifting from blue to yellow in positive samples, facilitating easier visual differentiation. • The basic structural characteristics of chloroplast genomes of Gnaphalieae were analyzed and compared. • The chloroplast genome size is much reduced for the FLAG clade, but relatively expanded for the others. • Insertion-deletion in intergenic regions are attributed to be the main factor to genome size variances in Gnaphalieae. Chloroplast genomes, as an essential source of phylogenetic information, are increasingly utilized in the evolutionary study of angiosperms. Gnaphalieae is a medium-sized tribe of the sunflower family of Asteraceae, with about 2,100 species in 178 genera distributed in temperate habitats worldwide. There has been considerable progress in our understanding of their phylogenetic evolution using both nuclear and chloroplast sequences, but no focus on chloroplast genomic data. In this study, we performed sequencing, assembly, and annotation of 16 representative chloroplast genomes from all the major lineages of Gnaphalieae. Our results showed that the plastomes exhibited a typical circular tetrad structure with similar genomic structure gene content. But there were differences in genome size, SSRs, and codon usage within the tribe. Phylogenetic analysis revealed Relhania clade is the earliest diverged lineages with the Lasiopogon clade and the Gnaphalium s.s. clade diverged subsequently. The core group includes FLAG clade sister to the HAP and Australasian group. Compared with the outgroup species, chloroplast genome size of the FLAG clade is much reduced whereas those of Australasian, HAP, Gnaphalium s.s., Lasiopogon and Relhania clades are relatively expanded. Insertions and deletions in the intergenic regions associated with repetitive sequence variations are supposed to be the main factor leading to length variations in the chloroplast genomes of Gnaphalieae. Currently, many summarization models are based on Transformer architectures, which regard text as a connected graph of words and tokens, thus fail to fully leverage the text's hierarchical structure. However, hierarchical structural information is crucial in understanding long documents, especially scientific papers. To exploit the structural information, we propose a H eterogeneous T ree structure augmented with T riplet P ositions for extractive Sum marization of scientific papers (HTPosum). The proposed model constructs a heterogeneous tree for each document, introducing section nodes and a global node to capture the documents' structural information. The tree is then augmented with a novel triplet position, which consists of three values that represent the depth, parent width position, and sibling width position of each node in a tree. The triplet position provides a unified view of the document structure. Global food systems can benefit significantly from continuous monitoring of microbial food safety, a task for which tedious operations, destructive sampling, and the inability to monitor multiple pathogens remain challenging. This study reports significant improvements to a paper chromogenic array sensor - machine learning (PCA-ML) methodology sensing concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted on a species-specific basis by pathogens by streamlining dye selection, sensor fabrication, database construction, and machine learning and validation. This approach enables noncontact, time-dependent, simultaneous monitoring of multiple pathogens (Listeria monocytogenes , Salmonella , and E. coli O157:H7) at levels as low as 1 log CFU/g with over 90% accuracy. The report provides theoretical and practical frameworks demonstrating that chromogenic response, including limits of detection, depends on time integrals of VOC concentrations. Foodborne pathogen infection poses a significant threat to public health and is considered as one of the most serious hazards in global food safety. Herein, a sensitive and efficient method for on-site monitoring of foodborne pathogens was developed by using a smartphone-assisted paper-sensor combined with phage-derived bacterial-binding proteins-nano magnetic beads (PBPs-MBs). PBPs including tail fiber protein (TFP:gp13), cell-wall binding domain (CBD) of endolysin and tailspike protein (TSP) coated on the surface of MBs were applied for rapid separation and enrichment of targeted bacteria (Escherichia coli O157:H7, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium , respectively) from food samples in 20 min before detection on paper-based sensors. The paper-based sensor was loaded with the lytic agent (polymyxin B) to induce bacterial lysis and release specific endogenous enzymes. Subsequently, three distinct chromogenic substrates were hydrolyzed by their corresponding enzymes, resulting in characteristic color changes on the paper, respectively. In addition, a smartphone APP for red-green-blue (RGB) color analysis of paper was able to directly detect three foodborne pathogens. As a result, the limit of detection (LOD) values for three foodborne pathogens were found to be 2.44 × 102, 2.68 × 104 and 4.62 × 103 CFU/mL, respectively, which were much lower than other studies (106–108 CFU/mL) based on enzymes. Moreover, the feasibility of this approach was further assessed through the successful detection of targeted bacteria in real samples with satisfactory recovery rates. We report a stable, multifunctional, and scalable paper-based flexible sensing platform for improved performance for in-situ sweat stimulating and analyzing of sweat as well as the monitoring of body motion. The welded honeycomb structure of composite paper formed in direct laser writing can provide a reversible and precise response in resistance during bending. The internal confined space containing the bacterial cellulose can induce an electrostatic enrichment of hydrogen ions in sweat, thus enhancing the pH-sensing sensitivity (68 mV pH-1). This spatial separating design for the two detections can further isolate the interfering, thus enabling the simultaneous and highly sensitive analysis of pH and movement. Increasing the conductivity of gas diffusion layers (GDLs) is an important way to improve the output performance of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, the complex porous fiber structures of GDLs significantly enhances the difficulty of quantitatively altering their conductivity which is determined by the carbon fibers and the conduction characteristics between fibers. In addition, the microstructures of various types of GDLs are different. Thus, it is a considerable challenge to explore the conductive mechanisms of these porous materials and optimize their structures to reduce their bulk resistances. In this work, a mathematical graph theory model that applies to the through-plane (T-P) bulk resistance prediction of two types of commonly used GDLs, carbon paper and carbon felt, is established to explain their different micro conduction mechanisms in depth. In addition to the number of fiber contact points, their distribution, as well as the resistance of the carbon fibers, are all important factors affecting the T-P conductivity. Optimizing fiber density and fiber diameter can significantly improve the T-P conductivity of carbon paper. In comparison, making the structure of carbon felt more compact so that the distribution of its contact points in the T-P direction can be more uniform will be more effective for the reduction of its T-P bulk resistance. Meanwhile, the T-P bulk resistance of carbon paper can also be effectively improved by optimizing the content and distribution of the binders. A method to decline the bulk resistance of carbon paper by aggregating the binders in the in-plane (I P) direction is proposed. The simulation results show that it can reduce the T-P bulk resistance of carbon paper by about 19.9% at a compressive stress of 1.5 MPa. These materials are often processed as multilayered films to meet high-barrier requirements, rendering their recycling difficult. Furthermore, these petroleum-based plastics persist in landfills without undergoing degradation. Accordingly, herein, we developed compostable plastic/paper composite-based bottles that can replace non-degradable plastic bottles. Crystalline structure of bio-based paper was rearranged by mercerization that modifies the cellulose surface to enhance its pervasive ability with poly(butylene succinate- co -butylene adipate) (PBSA). Introduction and combination of the oligomer and polymer states of PBSA facilitated strong paper-polymer interactions and resulted in superior gas/moisture barrier properties. Unlike the cases of conventional paper-based containers, which are prone to deformation under external forces, the flexible yet robust coating layer of this composite provides resistance to deformation, minimizing deterioration of properties under repeated bending forces. Moreover, all ingredients used in this composite are fully bio-based, and the composite demonstrates approximately 70 % decomposition during an 18-week composting test. This study aimed to fabricate zero-valent iron (Fe0)-loaded biochar from an industrial waste and further demonstrate its applicability as an environmental medium to remove Se(VI) and Se(IV). The biochar (PS/BC-750) was produced via the pyrolysis of paper-mill sludge under N 2 atmosphere. The characterization revealed that PS/BC-750 has a porous carbon structure embedded with reduced Fe phases (Fe0 and FeO). The adsorptive removal of Se(VI) and Se(IV) by PS/BC-750 was highly dependent on pH condition and progressively decreased with the pH increase. The adsorption kinetics of Se(VI) and Se(IV) reached equilibrium within 1440 and 60 min, respectively, following a pseudo-second-order kinetics. Se(VI) and Se(IV) adsorption isotherms fit to the Freundlich and Langmuir models, respectively, highlighting the importance of chemisorption in the adsorption processes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and competing anions experiments revealed that Se(VI) was adsorbed mainly on the Fe phases while Se(IV) was adsorbed on both Fe phases and carbon surface by specific binding mechanisms, with those adsorbed on Fe phases being subsequently reduced to Se0. The results demonstrated that the pyrolytic process can be of a viable platform for converting Fe-containing waste materials into environmental media with a wide application potential. Predictive models for the transport of volatile organic compounds in paper need to consider the complex interplay of diffusion, adsorption, desorption, or chemical reactions. The relative importance of each of these processes is determined by the polarity of the volatile. Hence, it is challenging to pick a valid theoretical model that correctly predicts transport regardless of the polarity. Here, physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) assess which of five different models correctly describe transport of DMSO as polar and n-tetradecane as apolar model compound: (i) a pseudo first-order adsorption model for an irreversible sorption process, (ii) a first-order kinetics model allowing reversible sorption, (iii) a second-order model with a reversible process, and an effective diffusion model accounting for a constant (iv) and for a variable effective diffusivity (v). Each tested model is given as set of partial differential equations (PDE). Considering the model under testing and experimentally obtained spatially and temporally resolved concentration profiles through stacks of paper sheets, PINNs predict concentration of the volatiles and associated material constants such as sorption constants and effective diffusion coefficients by solving the inverse problem. Our PINNs revealed two models, pseudo first-order sorption and second-order reversible sorption, that correctly predict concentration profiles and polarity-driven differences in sorption times.
