This paper examines the contours of the Comintern journey 'from below', through the figures of the communist Humbert-Droz family. Following on from the work of Brigitte Studer, the paper rethinks the notions of clandestinity and political work within the communist 'national sections'. The question of borders and the way in which they were crossed by the protagonists is at the centre of this examination. Borders did not only appear in their physical and geographical forms; they also appeared in immaterial conceptions of the border, and as the border between the individual and the rest of society. Life on the margins of European political life and the bourgeois moral enterprise is conveyed, as the authorities, the press and the police each played a role in the anti-communist crusade. To study the relationship between the Comintern and society is to understand the mechanisms of exclusion, and the specific nature of the work of officials of the Communist International. This paper looks at the socio-political relationship between the individual and the Comintern, and the networks that could be created, while also acknowledging the power dynamic that existed and persisted within the relationship of this Comintern family. This paper is drawn from a chapter of a forthcoming book on Canadian physician Maude Abbott. The excerpt explores how a prominent woman negotiated relationships during the early twentieth century. Abbott spent most of her career at McGill University in Montreal, as curator of its medical museum and as a researcher in congenital heart disease. Nonetheless her network of correspondents was vast. Engaging an approach the author calls 'friendship archaeology', the paper excavates Abbott's relationship with two powerful American physicians, Emanuel Libman and Paul Dudley White. The compliments paid to Clara Jarvis by the Amateur Swimming Association in recognition of her contribution as trainer to the women's swimming team at the 1912 Olympics marked a unique public recognition of the role of the woman as coach in the Edwardian era (1901–1914). The absence of similar references to women as coaches or trainers in the archives could easily persuade the observer that Clara was an isolated example, but the reality was very different in that women were actively coaching in several sports and activities, if coaching is interpreted in the sense of helping others to improve their physical performance. The key to researching these women is to look beyond the terminology 'coach' or 'trainer'. This paper uses a range of search terms to uncover women involved in skating and riding, and as physical culturalists and games mistresses, from the 1911 census and explores the characteristics of each group as well as uncovering some individual life courses. The paper concludes that these women were not unique, in that similar communities can also be identified in activities such as swimming and dance, and that the notion that few women coached in this period needs to be revised. The "new psychic economy" is a concept of Charles Melman, who passed away in 2022. A French psychoanalyst and one of the principal followers of Lacan, Melman's new psychic economy was his way of trying to explain the social changes of recent decades and their consequences, mainly in the field of psychoanalytic clinics. This paper is also inspired by other works, in particular those of the Belgian psychoanalyst Jean-Pierre Lebrun, a member of the Association Lacanienne Internationale, the school founded by Melman. His central argument is that the social link is submitted to a neoliberal requirement of unlimited pleasure that prevents symbolic castration from being functional. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article examines the life-stories of three young people who were born in Switzerland, but whose parents fled Bosnia due to the Yugoslav disintegration wars. These biographic portraits present three different ways of relating to and identifying with the country of origin, and (dis)engaging with its violent past. The paper highlights the ways in which young people are exposed to histories of violence and how these become personally relevant to them. One way of relating to this violent past is through family histories and memories, but these often remain obscure and fragmented. At the same time, young people encounter the legacies of the conflict outside the family and the home: in different diasporic and non-diasporic social spaces. The paper identifies the crucial role of diasporic divisions resulting from the conflict, social encounters in different contexts, and exposure to alternative historic narratives, in the development of young people's sense of belonging. Jenny Davis was among the first small, but significant tranche of women field biologists in the Pacific Region. She was born in Tasmania and developed a fascination with freshwater systems at an early age. Despite the paucity of female role models, freshwater ecology evolved into her research career track at the University of Tasmania where she completed her Honours degree (Zoology; 1976) and PhD (Freshwater Ecology; 1981). Jenny started her first academic position as a Tutor at Murdoch University in 1985. She successfully moved through the academic hierarchy where women continue to be under-represented in the senior ranks. She recently (2021) retired from her administrative and teaching responsibilities at Charles Darwin University (CDU) and approaching 70, is currently a Professor of Freshwater Ecology at CDU. An over-arching theme of her research is to understand the factors influencing the persistence of groundwater and surface water ecosystems. She has worked on the impacts of multiple stressors on springs, wetlands and arid zone waterbodies. She serves as a compelling role model for young scientists struggling to have a satisfying work-life balance. Jenny single-parented a son while conducting field work, teaching, publishing, serving as an academic administrator and being a prolific and successful grant writer. Jenny was also an exceptional mentor to a diverse group of students and post-docs, many of whom have thriving careers in academia, government and industry across Australia. This paper is a biography of a woman who with talent and persistence successfully broke gender barriers in Australian freshwater ecology and academia. Jenny Davis was among the first small, but significant tranche of female field biologists in the Pacific Region. Jenny is one of the few women to be promoted to the academic rank of Professor in Australian sciences. Her current research involves answering two questions: (1) how much water does the environment need; and (2) how important are isolated aquatic waterbodies for the conservation of Australia's freshwater biota? This paper is a brief biography of Penny, as one of the more successful of those pioneer women conservation biologists to work in the Pacific region. It tracks her early life, her influences and career path, and her struggles to balance work and family while working largely as a self-funded biologist and writer. This paper intends to reconstruct the long and multifaceted intellectual biography of Mario Alighiero Manacorda (1914-2013). The analysis will focus on the four phases of Manacorda's educational research: the Marxism pedagogy (1960s-1970s), the history of education (1970s-1980s), the relationship between laicity and schooling (1980s-1990s) and the history of sport (2000s). The contribution also attempts to show how Manacorda interprets these four themes in the light of the cultural paradigm of Marxism and in particular through the works of Marx, Engels and Gramsci. Arturo Issel (1842–1922) introduced the regional Tyrrhenian stage of the late Pleistocene in 1914. This still stands within modern stratigraphic classification as an Italian Marine Stage for the Mediterranean Sea marking the base of the Late Pleistocene underlining the scientific importance of Issel's research within the geological sciences. This paper provides a short overview of the career and the wide-ranging interests of this Italian geologist and naturalistic traveller in order to provide a context to the knowledge and research experience behind his stratigraphic work. As university professor in Genovese society during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, he played an important role in scientific instruction, exploration and research contributing to the popularization of science through museum collections and publications and in the application of such knowledge within public office both in Liguria and within Italy. He formed part of the Italian delegation at International Geological Congresses and held membership of the most outstanding geological societies and scientific academies of the time. Studies of narrative identity have focused on positive formation: stories of 'becoming' who we are because of events that happened, people we met, and things that we said, did, or had. However, identities can also be negatively defined by things that we miss, lose, choose against, or events that never happened. Drawing on the sociology of nothing, this paper explores some ways in which biographical subjects may story their unlived lives and paths to unbecoming. We demonstrate this by analysing the same extract of data through three interpretive lenses, revealing different narrative orders: the intrapersonal, intertextual, and performative. Respectively, these refer to how nothing is narrated: self-reflexively by the experiencing subject, regarding a particular instance; as a sequence of thematically connected episodes, contextually emplotted within a general life story; and as a communicative act of telling, directed towards an imagined audience. Authors can move between these narrative orders, taking different temporal perspectives and producing 'nested' stories of alternative non-selves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SYNOPSIS: G. Peter Wilson, most recently on the faculty at Boston College, was a consummate academic and leader. He profoundly influenced accounting research and the art and science of accounting instruction. He also advanced the accounting academy through his various leadership roles at the American Accounting Association. This memorial article documents Wilson's early upbringing, academic career, professional activities, and achievements. The overarching themes are love and impact. Wilson loved life, loved his work, and above all, loved his family, friends, students, and colleagues. As a result, he profoundly impacted each aspect of the academy—research, teaching, and service. Indeed, his impact continues through the undergraduate and master students he inspired, the doctoral students he mentored at various universities and consortia, the colleagues he collaborated with, and the many who continue to learn from his innovations. Among the Abinger Papers in the Bodleian Library is a document, MS. Abinger c. 73, fols. 99–104, the testimony of one William Tyler, a draper's assistant from Marlow, Buckinghamshire who wrote poems and saw the Shelleys plain. Jane, Lady Shelley (the wife of the Shelleys' only surviving son, Sir Percy Florence) gathered as many reminiscences of her father-in-law as she could. Tyler's is by far the longest. (Appended to this essay is a transcription of his testimony reproduced in full for the first time). Tyler has been virtually erased from the literary and biographical records of the Shelleys, save for one footnote. Edward Dowden made use of his testimony for The Life of Percy Bysshe Shelley (1886), but whilst some of Tyler's words are artfully deployed to bolster the memories of another, others are cut from the record altogether. This essay tells the remarkable story of Tyler, a man unknown to fame, who deserves to be remembered. For one, he provides the only surviving verbatim record of the contents of a journal kept by Mary Shelley which covered the events of May 1815 to June 1816. This paper explores how the recent critical reassessment of the biographer and antiquarian John Aubrey (1626–97) and the increasing availability of his writings can reveal new perspectives on Marvell’s early reception. Aubrey read all available instances of Marvell’s writing and studied them carefully and incisively, but criticism has not yet examined his engagement with Marvell as a comprehensive whole. This reveals that his primary interest was in data gathering: I use Aubrey’s letters, unpublished research manuscripts, and his biographical study Brief Lives, alongside the papers of his friend and collaborator Anthony Wood, to demonstrate how Marvell’s verse and prose were recognized as a valuable source for antiquarian and biographical research by early readers. For example, Aubrey emphasizes the importance of Marvell’s often neglected epitaphs. Aubrey also recognized that there were potential limitations for researchers using Marvell’s writing, not least his tendency to “severe” representations of his subjects. This severity could also endanger readers themselves, and I show how Aubrey and Wood tried to counteract accusations in the 1690s that they had shared the “Advice to a Painter” satires. This case demonstrates how the printed editions of the 1660s continued to possess an exceptional reputation for sedition which could be reactivated at moments of heightened political tension, and which far outstripped their actual content.

Background: Caring for terminally ill patients with minor children can be very stressful. The perceived quality of life is significantly influenced by the Meaning in Life (MiL). No studies were found that focus on the prioritized special needs of this patient group. Objectives: The aim is to compare and contrast terminally ill parents with minor children and palliative care patients in Germany, in order to provide appropriate support beyond medical, nursing or therapeutic interventions. Methods: Terminally ill parents diagnosed were surveyed using a validated instrument 'Schedule for Meaning in Life Evaluation (SMiLE)'. The study listed various areas that contribute to the MiL, followed by an evaluation of their importance and satisfaction levels. The researchers then compared these findings with data collected from palliative care patients. Results: In Germany, 54 patients, mostly female and with a mean age of 43, were included in this study between February 2017 and September 2020. The median age of the 96 children during the survey phase was 7 years. The comparison group consists of 100 palliative care patients in Germany; mostly aged 50 years and older. For terminally ill patients most important areas were in decreasing order family (100%), social relations (80%), leisure time (61%), nature/animals (39%) and home/garden (30%). Although the overall indices are close between both groups, there are significant and highly correlated differences between them. Parents felt limited by their illness in being a mother or father, as they wanted to be. Conclusion: The involvement with SMiLE led patients to consider their coping resources. The areas relevant to terminally ill parents differed from those relevant to palliative care patients. All participants identified family as the most important factor for MiL. The results suggest that evaluating MiL can serve as a coping strategy and help terminally ill parents with minor children. Plain language summary: A comparison of answers to the meaning in life from seriously ill parents with young children with the answers of other seriously ill patients Background: Caring for seriously ill patients with young children can be very stressful. The quality of life depends on meaning in life. No studies were found that focus on the needs of this patients. Objectives: The aim was to explore similarities and differences between seriously ill parents with young children and palliative care patients in Germany to find the best way to support them. Methods: The Meaning in Life questions were used to find this out. Two researchers asked seriously ill parents about different things that make their lives meaningful. The researchers then compared the results with data from other seriously ill patients in need of palliative care. In Germany, 54 seriously ill parents with young children were interviewed between February 2017 and September 2020. The children were usually seven years old. The compared group consisted of 100 palliative care patients and was mostly older than 49 years. For seriously ill patients most important were family, social relations, leisure time, nature/animals, and home/garden. The values seemed similar, but there are clear differences between the groups. Parents felt their illness limited them in being a mother or a father. Conclusion: The questions helped patients helped to remember meaning in life and set goals. The things that mattered to seriously ill parents were different from those that mattered to palliative care patients. Background: Given the shortage and unequal distribution of physicians across specialties, we aimed to evaluate factors associated with medical students’ career choices, including background, personality traits, educational experience, personal interests, lifestyle considerations, and the awareness of work requirements. Methods: We conducted multiple cross-sectional surveys of students; a 159-item online questionnaire was designed and students from three different stages of the six-year medical degree course (outset, clinical phase, and on graduation) were invited to complete the survey. Data were collected between May 2021 and April 2023. Results: The questionnaire was sent to 1406 students, of whom 683 replied (49%); 481 respondents were female (70%). The top specialty choices across the respondents were internal medicine, surgery, and general practice, with anaesthesiology, paediatric and adolescent medicine (ranging 11–15%), and obstetrics and gynaecology also receiving interest, with 6% undecided. In particular, female students lost interest in surgery during the course of study in favour of the other options. The choice of general practice was associated with more vocational training, prior positive experiences with the specialty, and lower grades in the university entry examination. Clinical clerkships in a specific (freely chosen) specialty aligned with career choice, while the final practical year did not have an impact on career decision-making. All students highly desired regulated working hours and work-life-balance; however, students choosing surgery rated these items as less important. Willingness to work in a hospital environment was highly associated with choosing anaesthesiology and surgery, whereas rural areas and practices were associated with general practice. Higher scores at agreeableness were associated with choosing paediatric and adolescent medicine by more female students, whereas lower neuroticism values were associated with the choice of anaesthesiology. Conclusions: The results highlight the intricate nature of decision-making and shed light on various aspects that contribute to the process of selecting a specialty. By identifying and addressing influencing factors, we can develop targeted interventions and policies to enhance diversity and distribution across medical specialisations and to aim for high-quality and equitable healthcare that matches the specific needs of both individuals and the population as a whole. The genre of biography, typically associate with elite individuals, may seem like an unlikely approach for writing feminist history. And yet, in writing about exceptional women, many of them women of color, I have found that their lives reveal how structures of power functioned and how the marginalized responded. The past eras of history were not, most of the times, permissive with the activity and manifestation of women within the society. For various reasons, women were neither helped nor encouraged to participate in large-scale social actions, they did not have access to ancient sports competitions, they were denied education to become painters, writers, philosophers or leaders. Despite all these impediments that intervened in history, women manifested themselves in society with a lot of power, either in literature (Sapho), philosophy (Hypathia) but also in state leadership (as pharaohs, in ancient Egypt). The present work brings to attention the names of great female personalities from ancient but also from recent history, women endowed with exceptional intelligence and character, who contributed to social progress and, above all, demonstrated that women can play an important role, which cannot be ignored in the history of humanity. Background: The use of life stories in dementia care has been described as a way of seeing every person as an individual, looking beyond their dementia. Life stories have become synonymous with high-quality care, while in Sweden their mere existence in dementia care settings is taken to indicate quality in national comparisons. Such life stories are often standardised, generated by a family member answering predetermined questions in a template. Aim and methods: Using a constructionist approach, this study will (1) chart what versions of a person's life story the templates produce, and (2) establish the intended purpose of such life stories, as communicated by the templates. This study departs from the assumption that life story templates communicate something about the conceptions of people living with dementia. The thematic analysis used data comprising 30 blank templates, totalling about 1,700 questions. Findings: The life story templates were found to generate two very different versions of the individual: (1) a person before symptoms of dementia or (2) a patient with dementia. We also found contradictions about what information should be included, whose life story it was, and the intended use. Discussion: Despite strong pressure on dementia care providers to collect life stories from residents, the life story templates they use are without clear direction, ideology, or purpose. The lack of direction is key given that life stories can be considered actants that shape assumptions about people with dementia and construct realities in dementia care settings. John Henry Wigmore's life experience as a Westerniser teaching Anglo-American Law in Japan from 1889 to 1892 is an example of legal orientalism. Engaging in the historical study of Japanese law despite diverging cultural paradigms between East and West paradoxically revealed striking similarities leading to the publication of the Materials for Study of Private Law in Old Japan in 1892. More than three decades after his return from Tokyo sparking a lasting fascination for foreign and comparative law, Wigmore published in 1928 A Panorama of the World's Legal Systems. This case study offers insights on the relationship between legal history and comparative law that these publications respectively represent. The imprecise classification of A Panorama at a time when comparative law was at its infancy stage requires identifying a relevant taxonomy. Madeleine Lemaire (1845–1928) might appear to be a typical "woman artist" of the Belle Époque, a painter of images of fashionable women, equally popular for her watercolor flowers and her skills as a salon hostess, with biographical sketches of her then and now assuming that if she had sex or romance, it was with men. However, a closer look has also revealed Lemaire to be potentially atypical. Unlike her women colleagues, she exhibited salacious nudes; her work was once described as having "a bit of the mustache"; and she generally dodged discussions of either her gender or her sexuality, even though her social group included those who openly flaunted their own non-conformities. Using archival materials, artworks, and contemporary theory to unpack the possibilities presented by Lemaire's case, I also explore the gains for art history in reconsidering previously female-identified and straight-seeming artists in more fluid gender and sexual terms. What might we discover if we recognize ourselves as the constructors of a cisheteronormative past, reading into the archives the assumptions that our current culture's binary norms enforce? Ervin Bauer (1890–1938) was the first to build a general molecular-based biological theory. He defined the basic principles of theoretical biology from a thermodynamic perspective, focusing on the capacity of biological systems to produce and support the state of sustainable non-equilibrium. His central work "Theoretical Biology" (1935) was written long before modern advances in molecular biology, genetics, and information theory. This article seeks to portray Grigore Trancu-Iasi (1874–1940) as a versatile figure in academic, professional and political fields. It shows the fundamental role played by Trancu-Iasi as a key actor in the evolution of accounting theory, practice and profession in Romania in the context of accounting knowledge transfer from the different Italian schools of thought to Romania. The analysis highlights not only his contribution to the dissemination of doctrines on bankruptcy, double-entry bookkeeping and the functioning of the azienda (firm) but also his pivotal role in the synthesis of the various Italian schools of thought, which were conflicting at the time. Trancu-Iasi translated and adapted bankruptcy studies carried out by Italian scholars from different schools of thought. For instance, he referred to the study of the logismographic method Tuscan School and the subsequent asset-centred accounting system promoted by the Venetian School, and the studies on the azienda presented by different Italian schools. Therefore, in this article, Trancu-Iasi emerges as an outstanding interpreter of the new trends in Italian accounting theory and of the needs of an entire professional group in Romania. This biographical essay will provide historical insights about Dr Carl Bodon who performed one of the first successful intracardiac injections of adrenaline to a patient and made important contributions to the understanding of cardiac diseases and women's health. Dr Bodon's biography reveals the story of a medical doctor who lived during tumultuous times between two world wars and ultimately died in the Holocaust. I review the history of my work on moonwort ferns, genus Botrychium, beginning with my early discovery of biology as a profession and the importance of mentors and networks of professional researchers in the development of my interests in biology. I discuss my initial work on discovery of new species of Botrychium and the utilization of enzyme electrophoresis as an early methodology for establishing species' individual genetic characterization and their relationships among species, emphasizing the importance of codominant nuclear markers for detection of allopolyploid parentages. I review the unusual predominance of allopolyploidy in Botrychium and discuss possible reasons for this relative to breeding systems, and describe a new pathway for overcoming hybrid sterility without polyploidy. I discuss the inadequacy of wind as a universal dispersal mechanism in Botrychium, and suggest avian dispersal as an under-appreciated spore dispersal mechanism. Throughout I note unresolved issues of Botrychium biology and suggest areas of needed research. Lastly, I discuss the unique characteristics of Botrychium that have allowed this lineage to persist through universal ecological disruptions and massive extinctions and compete successfully in modern ecosystems, and the morphological similarities of its descendants to early land plants. This biographical research aims to reveal the professional life and scientific works of Dr. Vasfi Samim. Dr. Vasfi Samim (1905-1981) was an internationally renowned Albanian veterinarian registered in the Ottoman State Register, who has been considered as an accomplished veterinarian, zootechnist, artist as well as sportsman in Albania. After graduating from the Higher Veterinary School (Baytar Mekteb-i Alisi) in Istanbul in 1927, Dr. Vasfi Samim completed his doctorate in the field of veterinary zootechny at the Berlin Higher Veterinary School in 1931. Upon returning to his country, he provided the structuring and development of animal health, breeding and zootechnical disciplines at international standards through serving important administrative duties. Dr. Vasfi Samim has 27 scientific articles on veterinary infectious diseases, animal breeding, selection, and crossbreeding as well as 11 books with social, cultural and political themes, 16 stories, 43 essays, and 23 theater works. He also played in Fenerbahçe, one of Türkiye's wellestablished sports clubs, and in Albanian football teams, and became an exemplary role model by being a manager in the national and international promotion and development of Albanian sports.
