This paper advocates for a reading of John Scottus Eriugena's Carmina that situates his collection of poems within the genre of devotional poetry. Although the Carmina has recently benefited from scholarship on Eriugena's theology, typologies of his poems consistently overlook the significance of their theological themes. Most instead attribute more significance to their political themes, since Charles the Bald commissioned many of Eriugena's poems for special occasions at his royal court. This paper argues that a textual analysis which compares the significance of theological and political themes in the Carmina reveals several reasons why Eriugena's poems should be read as devotional poetry. First, it explains how typologies of Eriugena's poems overlook the significance of their theological themes by overstating the significance of Charles and his royal court. In this modern era of anxiety and posthumanism alienation is a critical ailment today. Caught in the web of dehumanising forces and pitted against hostile social stigmas, man is besieged with the problems of survival and growth. The more days are advancing, the more people are suffering from social distancing and social estrangement. Alienation results from powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, cultural estrangement, social isolation, and self-estrangement. Alienation study comes from the angles of psychological, sociological, literary, and philosophical aspects. The silence-bound poet Jayanta Mahapatra was caught in the throes of alienation. His alienation from the Hindu culture was caused by his grandfather's acceptance of Christianity. His lingua-alienation was caused by his estrangement from the Oriya language. His alienation from the physical world was the outcome of his betrothal to the muse of poetry. So, this present paper is an attempt to stress how Mahapatra's poetry focuses on the theme of alienation and silence and paves the way for rejuvenation and revitalisation to come into the network of social ecology and human bonding overcoming the tenants of alienated predicament and identity crisis. Three links between poetry and psychoanalysis are highlighted in this paper. These refer to the presence, in the clinical hour, of (i) poetic sentiment, (ii) poetic speech, and (iii) poetic specimen. Each is elucidated in detail and with the help of socio-clinical vignettes. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate that, through the affirmative holding and partial unmasking of the instinctual-epistemic conflation in verse and free-association, both poetry and psychoanalysis seek to transform the private into shared, the hideous into elegant, and the unfathomable into accessible. Teaching and learning isiXhosa poetry continues to pose challenges for both teachers and learners in South African basic education. The abstract nature of poetry makes it difficult for both groups to grasp the figurative meanings embedded in each line of the poems. Teachers who rely on rote learning and learners who master cramming find teaching and learning poetry difficult, as these skills offer little or no results in the teaching and learning of poetry. It is against such a backdrop that this paper seeks to investigate the use of augmented reality (AR) in education and how it can assist in the teaching and learning of isiXhosa poetry. The use of AR in language learning has been extensively studied by several scholars. AR is found to enhance learning and decrease learners' cognitive load. In contrast, some scholars argue that it is not ready for total integration into language classes. Despite strides that have been made in the study of augmented reality in language learning and teaching, there is a paucity of extended research on the use of augmented reality in teaching and learning isiXhosa poetry. In this paper, I will review existing data and examine augmented reality activities and technologies that can be used in the teaching and learning of IsiXhosa poetry. This paper will contribute towards improving the teaching and learning of isiXhosa poetry in basic education and assist literature educators in integrating modern technologies in their teaching. Edgar Allan Poe's life was plagued by melancholy and disaster, which is evident in all of his writings. Among the many other poets of his generation, his solitude and individuality set him apart from the rest. He gave the Gothic genre a completely new meaning, making it both dark and significant at the same time. First, as an overview is given, of the 19th century, Edgar Allan Poe, and the tragedies that influenced his poetry. This study employs a comprehensive methodology focusing on the close reading of three of Poe's wellknown poems: "The Raven," "A Dream within a Dream," and "Alone." By analyzing how sadness and sorrow are portrayed in these poems, the paper investigates the extent to which these emotions impacted Poe's writing. The analytical approach involves delving into the thematic and stylistic nuances of the selected poems, shedding light on the intricate ways in which Poe articulates his emotions. The purpose of this study is to tackle the sense of gloominess and sadness by employing textual and analytical approaches. The significance of the feelings of loss and sorrow in Poe's writings is addressed, drawing connections to Poe's life story. The findings demonstrate that Poe's writings occasionally converge with personal catastrophes, tragedies from his own life, and stories about death sadness, and grief come together on multiple occasions over the course of his demanding career. Concluding that sadness, sorrow, and everything that comes with it were indeed lurking in every one of his statements, this paper contributes to the existing literature by portraying the semi-autobiographical image of the author within the realm of his poetry. The textual and analytical approaches used in this study provide a nuanced understanding of how personal experiences influenced Poe's poetic expression, enriching our comprehension of the intricate relationship between his life and art. This paper, which is part of the field of studies on Roman dialectal and regional phraseology, analyzes the idiomatic expression tre ppigne e 'na tenaja and its variant tre ppinze e 'na tenaja. This phraseological unit is documented in the 19th century: it is found in a roman poem of G.G. Belli (L'arma de Papa Grigorio, 1836). The struggle with becoming a tree in Sylvia Plath’s poems reveals her struggle to create a subjectivity for herself as a female poet in a patriarchal world. Becoming a tree epitomizes the tradition in which Plath strives to create her poetic subjectivity: the opposition between the male Romantic poet and the feminine nature that inspires him, the prototype of which is Ovid’s myth of Daphne becoming the tree muse for Apollo. Plath internalizes the death of the body imposed on the woman in the formula and creates out of the negativity within her. Instead of treating nature as an object in order to become a poet, she accepts that she is both the articulate poet and the nature that can never be fully expressed. Torn between the one who expresses and the one who is expressed, the bodies of trees in her poems painfully shine with layers of darkness. The trees represent a female subjectivity that closely communicates with the darkness, which is fairly dangerous for a formed subjectivity. This paper analyzes the complex layers of the question of becoming a tree imposed on the female body. It then discusses how Plath responds to this burden by creating a subjectivity expressed by black trees that intimately identify with the flourishing death and articulate the darkness within themselves as a landscape. The article examines Slovak poems by a wide range of authors published in the last third of the 20th century and linked by taking as its theme erotic social interactions in urban public transport. The analysis is conceptually related to Bakhtin's chronotope of the journey and the topos of the encounter and to existing research on poetry with the motifs of accidental male-female encounters in the urban environment and especially in the context of public transport (Walter Benjamin, Alejandro Hermida de Blas, Josef Hrdlička, Pavol Minár). The essay also makes connections with related topoi and paradigmatic texts. The core of the paper focuses on encounters that are motivated erotically on the part of the subject and notices their various forms and distinctive features. It explores both the sensual side of the erotic theme and its reflexive overlaps that are typical of these poems. This paper will discuss the possibility of attributing authorship to translations by carrying out a comparative stylometric analysis of an author's poems and their translations of other writers' works. The paper puts forward two hypotheses. Firstly, its aim is to test whether an author's poems and translations share stylistic patterns. Secondly, it will test whether these shared patterns can be used to attribute authorship of translations. The complete works of Antonio Colinas and Eloy Sánchez Rosillo, together with their respective translations of Giacomo Leopardi's Cantos, will be used. Based on these texts, we will build computational representations that correspond to the stylistic profiles of each author, using various style cues related to metrics, grammar, and lexicon. These representations will serve as input for the calculation of similarity. Its result will allow us to determine to what extent characteristics of an author's own verses remain in the translated poems and whether there is more closeness between the two translations or between each author's poetry and their translation. Two major poets of the Russian Neo-Avant-Garde—Gennady Aygi and Elizaveta Mnatsakanova—created textual works that transgressed the limits of language and the borders between the arts. Each pursued their own method of the visualization and musicalization of verbal matter, yet both share a particular musical sensibility, which guarantees the integrity of the linguistic structure of their verse, despite the fragmentation and logical incoherence of its elements. The atonal (serial) musical tradition has a special significance for these experimental poetics of minimalism. Mnatsakanova, herself a musicologist, who was friends with Dmitri Shostakovich, not only used the techniques of contemporary music composition in her visual and sound poetry, but also collaborated with electronic musicians in her recorded poetry performances. Aygi experimented with language, not only crossing the boundaries between music and poetry, but also between sound and silence. For him, music was a way of expressing pre-verbal subjectivity and reproducing signs of meaning that are hidden from ordinary perception. In his poems, Aygi brought together Chuvash folk music with experimental techniques of minimalism, correlating his own work with such Soviet unofficial composers as Andrey Volkonsky and Sofia Gubaidulina. E.E. Cummings's concrete poetry raises the canonical problem of poetic untranslatability. It is commonly accepted that a poem is constituted as a unity of form and content, and any change in the form of a poem results in the loss of the poetic value and, eventually, translation failure. Two basic approaches have been proposed regarding the untranslatability of Cummings's concrete poetry: mimicry and equivalence of effect. However, the former is impractical, and the latter is an indirect one. This paper proposes employing Wittgenstein's conception of translation in his later philosophy of language to solve the question of the untranslatability of Cummings's concrete poetry. By analysing three of Cummings's concrete poems 'r-p-o-ph-e-s-s-a-g-r', 'mOOn Over tOwns mOOn', and 'Buffalo Bill's', this study suggests that poetry is translatable in the sense that the same language-game in the source text (ST) can be played in the target text (TT) by reconstruction or invention. In difficult times, people turn to poetry, reading, and writing for solace and peace. In emotionally intense and traumatic times, people use poetry to process and understand the lived eyepieces. The havoc wreaked by the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the emotional and psychological well-being of individuals all across the world. Poetry has emerged as a savior in these difficult times. A phenomenon, "lockdown poems", came into existence as individuals all across the globe processed and shared their lived experiences of isolation, pain, and suffering through poems. In the present paper, students of a management program process and share their experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the subsequent lockdowns, and their community work experience. This paper shall make a modest attempt to focus on the poetic vision of Jayanta Mahapatra, the legendary Indian English poet vis-vis his obsession to depict the socio-cultural milieu of his native land Odisha. His whole repertoire of poetry revolves around a golden quadrangle of Cuttack, Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar with nostalgic description of past glorious legacy and painful narration of the present decadence. With Introvert and withdrawn syndromes explicitly visible in his personality, Jayanta Mahapatra is a keen observer of society in its myriad manifestations. It may be the emotionally shocking revelation of the Fisher man willing to push his daughter into prostitution or the waiting by the widows to be cremated at Puri or of lost chivalry of Kalinga (Odia) soldiers who valiantly fought in Historic Kalinga war to turn ruthless king Ashok into a spiritual person embracing Buddhism. The shocking depiction of his grandfather Chintamani Mahapatra's helplessness during the great Famine of 1866 to embrace Christianity speaks volumes about his regret to spurn Hinduism and switch over to Christianity under duress. His recurrent images 'rain', 'door', 'sleep', 'silence', 'mouth', 'dream,' 'memory' etc. obviously refer to his unhappiness with the present decadent culture. The present paper offers a new approach to the poetry of the Egyptian Sufi poet 'Umar Ibn al-Fāriḍ (576-632AH/1181-1235AD). This approach is based on the text of Ibn al-Fāriḍ's Great Sufi Poem, al-Tā'iyyat al-kubrā, in which the poet expresses in full his spiritual experience. First, the basic hermeneutical question is discussed, e.g., what is the way of approaching a literary text in order to understand the experience of the poet' Also, it deals with a Sufi text, its context and the relationship between text and experience. To what extent does the author express his inner world verbally? In the end, there is a distance between the interior experience of a Sufi and his verbal expression. Eventually, this method is applied to the poetry of Ibn al-Fāriḍ. He describes his Sufi experience as a journey through three steps: from separation (farq) to unity (ittiḥād) to universal union (gam'). This paper argues that Nikolai Nekrasov's "V derevne" explores the limits of the Romantic view of lyricism as a socially isolated endeavor and attempts instead to use the lyric form to express social relationships. It contends that the poem works to conceptualize a social whole in which peasant and non-peasant are directly connected. Tragedy emerges as the mode of this connection: the lyric hero of the poem's first monologue and the lamenting peasant in the poem's second part each turn inward to bemoan circumstances which they feel they cannot change, including, in the case of the lyric hero, their own individual moods. This is the essence of Nekrasov's tragic pathos. As a folkloric omen, the poem's central image of gathering crows introduces a supernatural element to the poem which, rather than distinguishing a space separate from socio-economic realities, renders what might otherwise be considered natural an intentional effect. The poem's allusions through the crow omen to supernatural forces points to the actual social forces that structure the poem's world. The mysteriousness of these forces is thematized as a shared alienation, which is experienced even by the peasant in her presumably collective sphere as her mourning becomes a more modern sense of melancholia. Representing a collective experience of shared isolation, the poem attempts to embody the social totality which no single individual can grasp, in this way drawing on tragedy to offer a new form of lyric which does not ignore social divisions but rather expresses them. The folkloric elements in Nikolai Nekrasov's "V derevne" ("In the Village," 1854) go beyond metric and stylistic affinities, and include, among others, the crows that flock as if from around the world; the well, the name Kasyanovna; and the final image of the black net. The paper will describe the dynamics of these elements' interaction within the text, suggesting that in the poem, the lyric author's engagement with the two genres of folk poetry, namely, the epic and the lament (plach, prichitanie), brings about a transformative experience for the lyric hero. This paper argues that Nikolai Nekrasov's poem is closely related to a topical discussion on the representation of peasants in literary texts that was unfolding in the criticism of 1850s. Critics such as Pavel Annenkov, who published his articles in The Contemporary edited by Nekrasov, insisted that the modern literature created by the westernized elites was incapable of correctly describing the social and psychological circumstances of the life of common people. His opponent Stepan Dudyshkin, to whom Nekrasov dedicated the first edition of his poem, replied that the whole idea of a perfectly correct representation of human life in a work of art is an illusion created by German philosophers, while a poet should rather influence the reader and evoke strong feelings. Analyzing the poem by Nekrasov, I demonstrate that he closely follows the advice of Dudyshkin, showing that such feelings as pity and sympathy can overcome social and cultural borders between the characters of his poem. Holism evolution states that although energy, matter, life, consciousness and the human personality are independent and different substances/levels of evolution, they are holistically and intimately related. This paper presents the findings from teaching chemistry to high school science students and post-graduate university science-education students using poetry constructed from physical science ideas embedded in holism evolution. The research findings are based on observations of student behaviour and their written feedback from being taught chemistry using poems on the periodic table and acids and bases. Both poems demonstrate the holism intimacy between various substances/levels of evolution, with the periodic table poem also presenting groups of chemical elements as representing the characteristics of infant, teenager, adult and old age of matter, presenting a holistic relationship between matter and life. The findings indicate that using holism evolution infused content led to a personally meaningful engagement with chemistry even among students with limited previous interest in the subject. The paper reflects on the absurd humour contained in Kafka's novel The Trial in two selected works of Russian literature. Using the example of two texts representing different genres (a short story and a poem) by Daniil Kharms and Vladimir Yermolayev, it shows how these two authors were inspired by this aspect of Kafka's work: in the case of Vladimir Yermolayev, the source of inspiration is completely unquestionable and is already referred to by the direct allusion in the title. The entire poem is then constructed as a lawsuit that originates, unfolds and concludes within the lyrical subject, which is the metaphorical Kafka himself. For Daniil Charms, the source of inspiration is unacknowledged, though obvious: Charms was inspired by one particular passage of Kafka's novel, which he altered in accordance with his poetics. The article addresses what gets lost in the literary translation process. Although "meaning" is ill-defined at best, it refers to how a message loses meaning in translations. Nuskha Hai Wafa", by Faiz Ahmed Faiz, one of Pakistan's best-ever classic anthologies, is selected as the Source Text (ST) and Target Text (TT) "The Way It Was Once "by Shoaib Hashmi (1999) is selected. The research investigates how translation exploits languages in relationships to handle potentially difficult conflictive situations in cross-cultural differences. Research has suggested that meaning loss in literary translation is the untranslatability of culturally particular vocabulary because language and culture are inextricably interwoven, cultural values and social standards are important considerations when translating poetry. Urdu and English have fundamentally different coding and writing systems, translating between the two languages inevitably results in meaning loss. However, this loss can be mitigated using various translation techniques, methods, and strategies. During the process of comparative analysis following questions have been tried to sort out: how do cultural disparities resist the process of poetic translation? how is meaning lots in the process of poetic translation? What strategies are used to translate the poetic expressions from Urdu to English? What causes loss of meaning in transmitting culturally specific items from one language to another? In this paper, the translator focused on the Urdu cultural domain of poetry concerning the loss of meaning. The research results verified the hypothesis that despite different tactics and strategies, the unavailability of culturally specific equivalent expressions causes hurdles in the process of translation, which causes the loss of meaning either due to omission, reduction, or addition. AI-generated art, text, and audio have emerged in the last year as potentially disruptive technologies: can students now simply plagiarize entire papers whole cloth from an internet chat tool? Is the digital art on display created by a human, or an amalgamation of digital repositories which create art in many styles in seconds? Is the audio or video clip on the screen legitimate, or a forgery produced from a provided bank of samples? Shown in this negative light, the technological advancements in AI are anathema to the traditional spirit of learning and collaboration which is key in the literature classroom. This guide attempts to invert the potentially nefarious uses of AI in education by using its inherently accessible nature to benefit students who might learn best in a visual or creative mode in the study of poetics. By experimenting with free-to-use AI art generation tools, students will come to better understand not only the function and form of poetry, but also poetic paraphrase and figurative language. The aim of the paper is to analyze Enfants du lichen, a book of poems by Maya Cousineau Mollen, an Innu poet born in 1975, in order to see if the labyrinth can be considered as a figure of the postcolonial Native American experience. Although the word « labyrinth » does not make its explicit emergence in the poems, their lexical field evokes a whole imagination which makes it emerge implicitly and allows us to believe that the figure of the labyrinth corresponds to the situation of the former colonized. Our contribution is divided into three parts. The first characterizes the postcolonial Native American experience, as described in the poems, and explains why it may be seen as a labyrinth. The second shows the exploration of the paths of possible escape and the last focuses on the exit, the « passage from darkness to light », which can be read as a new era in the life of Canadian Native Americans. The subject of the paper is a detailed interpretation of the first part of Jan Kochanowski's Tren V (Lament V) in the context of Psalm 128 ("Beati omnes, qui timent Domimmf). As we know, the main source of the opening part of this poem is an epic simile from Iliad (XVII, 53-58), where a young warrior Euphorbos is compared to a "slip of an olive tree" as "it blossoms into beauty." Similarly, Psalm 128 proposes the picture of sons growing up like "the olive plants around the table" of a pious man. In Kochanowski's rewriting of the Homeric simile the emphasis is always put on negation of the meanings attributed to the symbol of olive tree, such as peace, wisdom, justice, fertility, abundance, youth. The paper discusses two poetic pieces closely connected to the Battle of Ula, a significant episode of the war with Moscow for Livonia. Capturing Polock by the troops of Ivan the Terrible (February 15th, 1563) and starting the war campaign by the Tsar in January 1564 moved the conflict into the interior of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Two great Muscovite armies were to meet near the city of Orsha to move towards Vilnius that was placed 26 miles away from the war theatre. The victory of the Lithuanian troops in the Battle of Ula (January 26th, 1564) and almost complete defeat of one army of Ivan the Terrible moved the immediate threat away and made way for a series of successes of the Polish-Lithuanian armed forces. The above-sketched events make up a background of Jan Kochanowski's trifle III 51 and Maciej Stryjkowski's handwritten poem. Remarks on the epigram Do Lubimira (To Lubimir) lead to explication of the relation between the poem and the Greek basis of the trifle, and disambiguate its dating. While as far as recently rendered available fragments of Stryjkowski's work are concerned, they focus on the piece's description and the shape of the poem about the Battle of Ula. The paper discusses a recently completed critical edition of Jan Kochanowski's Fraszki (Trifles), which will before long be issued as a subsequent volume of his Dzieła wszystkie (Collected Works). Different aspects of the publication are presented, including facsimile, transcription, and commentary. As a representative sample, a few actual passages from particular trifles are discussed in length. These include the following poems: I 48, I 55, I 78, II 55, III 1, III 39, III 46, III 53, III 63, and III 69. The most remarkable added value of the edition is that it contains countless minute discoveries--individually marginal-- creating much broader, much richer, and much deeper picture of Trifles than the previous editions might suggest. This paper argues that two crucial episodes of Odysseus' life from Homer's Odyssey are resonant with Iliadic scenes highlighting the fail0d leadership of Hector, Agamemnon, and Achilles. These resonances invited ancient audiences of the Homeric poems to see moments of failure in Odysseus' leadership, and to criticize his desire for revenge and military glory at the end of the Odyssey. This paper reexamines the literary influence of Nicander's Theriaca on the snake episode in Lucan's Bellum civile Book 9. Although often cited as an early zoological source, Nicander's contributions to the aesthetic and thematic aspects of Lucan's epic have gone largely overlooked. While his zoological knowledge drew mostly from intermediary sources such as Aemilius Macer, Lucan's use of venomous serpents as disruptive, destabilizing forces closely follows the poetic innovations of the Theriaca. Contrasting the unknowable, unpredictable threat of venomous creatures with horrifyingly graphic depictions of their bites, both authors construct poetic works that challenge and subvert contemporary literary and intellectual conventions. Romantic-period studies have been keenly sensitive to the notion of mobility across borders, both in literal and figurative terms, investigating it in relation to issues of personal and national identity. This essay discusses Byron's various forms of border-crossing with specific reference to his Italian years, starting with the most immediate loco-geographic meaning of the term, that is, Byron's traversing the many frontiers that marked the Italian territory, partitioned in a plurality of states. The focus is on Byron's experience of the technologies of control which were set into place in the early nineteenth century, testified by his traveling papers and registered, often with a touch of humor, in his correspondence. Byron's musings on the practices and implications of the documentary control of mobility and identity spilled over, in a more serious key, into the concerns of his poetic output, notably in the lines of his 1819 lyric "To the Po." Translating the notion of borders and border-crossing onto the page, here Byron resisted the crystallizing of identity at work in the biopolitical domain by making the fluidity of the history-laden river Po the locus of his rebirth as transnational subject. Although as a response to the New Cross and Grenfell Tower fires Jay Bernard's collection Surge (2019) engages with the themes of loss and mourning, no critical attempt has been made to approach this complex sequence of poems from the perspective of the poetic elegy. This paper argues that reading Surge as a neo-elegy sheds light on Bernard's intervention in current discourses on the grievability of Black lives in order to carry out their work of mournful protest. I intend to show the ways in which Surge endorses and enhances the ethico-political purpose and innovative expansiveness – regarding time, voice, and place – that characterize the contemporary Black elegy to address the past and ongoing struggles of the Black British community. Even if rooted in British postcolonial history, Bernard's project in Surge resonates with the concerns of the Black Lives Matter global movement and the body of Black elegiac poetry developing around it. Integrating literacy practices in science classrooms can help students read complex scientific text, write arguments as part of shared cross-disciplinary practices, and engage with content. In the Linking Science, Mathematics, and Literacy for All Learners program, middle school science, mathematics, ELA, and special education teachers have been implementing multimodal STEM text sets that include a range of texts and scaffolds that support instruction and students' content learning. One of these strategies combines reading and writing in unique and creative ways: poetry writing! Blackout and found poems are accessible approaches to help students focus on key words and ideas in a complex text, pull out those words to work with them, and then reconstruct them into a poem. This approach can be used in a variety of ways, and in some of the examples provided, students include an altered page from a scientific article on which they find their words, black out the rest of the text, and then illustrate the entire document to help show their message [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, an esthetic revolution awakened a new interest in traditional poetry, which was considered the depositary of the Volksgeist and the most faithful representation of the national character. This paper raises the possibility of using the concept of author function to prove the high coherence with which German Hispanism, and in particular Ferdinand Wolf, considered the people of Spain as the authorial subject of Spanish romances. To do so, I will review the increasing interest in folk poetry since the 1750s contextualizing it within the new processes of the creation of national identities and Europe's special attraction to the Spanish case. Secondly, I will connect this revival to both new esthetic sensibilities that revolutionized the concept of authorship, such as expressive theories, and the creation of a collective subject (das Volk) as the origin of romances. The counterfeit works of Rafael Bolívar Coronado (1884–1924) represent a phenomenon with unusual repercussions on critical reception. This author managed to publish more than twelve volumes with false authorship and content, from "crónicas de Indias" to collections of poetry. This article presents a theoretical approach regarding literary falsification in general and highlights the concepts of lightness and multiplicity to propose an interpretation of the Bolívar Coronado case. This paper also deals with the artistic dimension of literary forgeries as creative works that use the same methods and strategies as fiction writing. The set of falsified works by this author can be interpreted as a conceptual proposal that questions the functioning of the literary field of his time. Likewise, his proposal can also be framed within the cultural criticism that the forgery tradition entails: it questions not only the difficult discernment between the concepts of truth and lies, but also the rigidity of some guardians of cultural institutions and the system of legitimation, awards, and literary reviews. In the GDR, literature and poetry played a prominent role. They were considered to have great potential to educate the people, but at the same time were feared to be dangerous for the well-being of the state. As of the 1960s, the state had established a comprehensive system to develop, support and instruct but also control the writing of aspirational young and amateur writers. In this, they were supported by mass organizations such as the Free Federation of German Trade Unions (FDGB) or the Free German Youth (FDJ). For this work ‚at the grassroots' the institutions at the district level of the GDR were eminently important. This paper takes the district of Gera as an example. It outlines the specific institutions and structures which were installed in this district. Considering political contexts and aesthetic manifestations of anthologies published in Gera, we will analyse cultural-political conflicts and aspects of literary and societal developments of the GDR. This essay argues that "The lamentacion of a Gentilwoman vpon the death of her late deceased frend William Gruffith Gent." in The Gorgeous Gallery of Gallant Inventions (1578), attributed to Isabella Whitney, is a witty reimagining of one of the most popular Renaissance literary genres: the epitaph. The poet's grief revolves around the personal consequences of her secret lover's death, handling stock phrases and situational irony to strangely moving effect. While the poem's first-person speaker invokes the epitaph only to repudiate it, the three quatrains framing the text (written in the third person and therefore generally attributed to the volume's editor Thomas Proctor), pins down the mourning presence with the epitaphic "here." This paper suggests single authorship of the doubled text by showing how the poem posits personal lament as the site of interment located by the spatial demonstrative "here," to fashion a poetics of closure in which the voice of the languishing female poet becomes, through linguistic and textual splitting, a living epitaph for the dead beloved. This paper establishes a transnational dialogue between different island spaces impacted by mass tourism and highlights poetry's contribution to the political reconfigurations of the Balearic and Caribbean islands. Notwithstanding these island spaces' different historical circumstances, it acknowledges that the tourist industry illustrates crucial historical continuities in each archipelago. The poetics analysed question the pro-growth ideology of the industry, the subservient role of their islands' political classes that disregard human well-being and environmental sustainability, and put the islands' survival at risk. This study identifies resemblances in Caribbean and Balearic island spaces' poetic responses to tourism and recognises local emancipatory alliances that not only bring to the surface shared forms of oppression, but also propose alternatives beyond the (hotel) chains of global capitalism.
