Abstract Background Thoracic aortic dissection (TAD) is an irreversible cardiovascular disorder with high mortality and morbidity. However, the molecular mechanisms remain elusive. Thus, identifying an effective therapeutic target to prevent TAD is especially critical. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the potential mechanism of inflammation and vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMCs) phenotypic switch in β-aminopropionitrile fumarate (BAPN)-induced TAD. Methods A mouse model of TAD induced by BAPN and IL-1β -stimulated HVSMCs in vivo and in vitro models, respectively. ACE2 Knockdown mice treated with BAPN or without, and the TAD mouse model was treated with or without AAV-ACE2. Transthoracic ultrasound was conducted for assessment the maximum internal diameter of the thoracic aorta arch. RNA sequencing analysis was performed to recapitulate transcriptome profile changes. Western blot were used to detect the expression of MMP2, MMP9, ACE2, SIRT3, OPN, SM22α and other inflammatory markers. The circulating levels of ACE2 was measured by ELISA assay. Histological changes of thoracic aorta tissues were assessed by H&E, EVG and IHC analysis. Results We found that circulating levels of and the protein levels of ACE2 were increased in the TAD mouse model and in patients with TAD. For further evidence, ACE2 deficiency decelerated the formation of TAD. However, overexpression of ACE2 aggravated BAPN-induced aortic injury and VSMCs phenotypic switch via lowered SIRT3 expression and elevated inflammatory cytokine expression. Conclusion ACE2 deficiency prevented the development of TAD by inhibiting inflammation and VSMCs phenotypic switch in a SIRT3-dependent manner, suggesting that the ACE2/SIRT3 signaling pathway played a pivotal role in the pathological process of TAD and might be a potential therapeutical target.

Abstract Background N 6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification of messenger RNA (mRNA) is crucial for liquid-liquid phase separation in mammals. Increasing evidence indicates that liquid-liquid phase separation in proteins and RNAs affects diabetic cardiomyopathy. However, the molecular mechanism by which m6A-mediated phase separation regulates diabetic cardiac fibrosis remains elusive. Methods Leptin receptor-deficient mice (db/db), cardiac fibroblast-specific Notch1 conditional knockout (POSTN-Cre × Notch1flox/flox) mice, and Cre mice were used to induce diabetic cardiac fibrosis. Adeno-associated virus 9 carrying cardiac fibroblast-specific periostin (Postn) promoter-driven small hairpin RNA targeting Alkbh5, Ythdf2, or Notch1, and the phase separation inhibitor 1,6-hexanediol were administered to investigate their roles in diabetic cardiac fibrosis. Histological and biochemical analyses were performed to determine how Alkbh5 and Ythdf2 regulate Notch1 expression in diabetic cardiac fibrosis. NOTCH1 was reconstituted in ALKBH5- and YTHDF2-deficient cardiac fibroblasts and mouse hearts to study its effects on mitochondrial fission and diabetic cardiac fibrosis. Heart tissue samples from patients with diabetic cardiomyopathy were used to validate our findings. Results In mice with diabetic cardiac fibrosis, decreased Notch1 expression was accompanied by high m6A mRNA levels and mitochondrial fission. Fibroblast-specific deletion of Notch1 enhanced mitochondrial fission and cardiac fibroblast proliferation and induced diabetic cardiac fibrosis in mice. Notch1 downregulation was associated with Alkbh5-mediated m6A demethylation in the 3’UTR of Notch1 mRNA and elevated m6A mRNA levels. These elevated m6A levels in Notch1 mRNA markedly enhanced YTHDF2 phase separation, increased the recognition of m6A residues in Notch1 mRNA by YTHDF2, and induced Notch1 degradation. Conversely, epitranscriptomic downregulation rescues Notch1 expression, resulting in the opposite effects. Human heart tissues from patients with diabetic cardiomyopathy were used to validate the findings in mice with diabetic cardiac fibrosis. Conclusions We identified a novel epitranscriptomic mechanism by which m6A-mediated phase separation suppresses Notch1 expression, thereby promoting mitochondrial fission in diabetic cardiac fibrosis. Our findings provide new insights for the development of novel treatment approaches for patients with diabetic cardiac fibrosis.

Abstract Mental fatigue impairs performance across several sports domains. However, a systematic review on its effects on racket sports performance has been lacking due to the previous scarcity of studies. This review aims to provide a comprehensive review the effects of mental fatigue on racket players’ performance, with a discussion of the underlying mechanisms. A thorough search was conducted across five databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, SCOPUS, SPORTDiscus (via EBSCOhost), and the Psychological and Behavioral Science Collection (via EBSCOhost). The PICOS framework established the inclusion criteria: (1) healthy racket sports players; (2) induction of mental fatigue in both field and laboratory settings; (3) comparison of mental fatigue interventions with a control group (e.g., watching a movie or reading a magazine); (4) assessment of performance outcomes, including physical performance, skilled performance, and perceptual-cognitive performance; and (5) randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-randomized controlled trials (non-RCTs), and non-randomized non-controlled trials. Mental fatigue manipulation, subjective evaluation, and (neuro)physiological markers were synthesized to support the successful induction of mental fatigue. Performance was categorized into tennis, table tennis, badminton, and padel based on the characteristics of specific racket sports domains. Secondary outcomes, such as the rate perception of effort (RPE) and motivation, were synthesized to explain the mechanisms based on the prominent theory of the Psychobiological model of endurance performance. Six studies revealed that mental fatigue impacts stroke performance in table tennis, affecting speed, accuracy, faults, and only second-serve accuracy in tennis. The response time of psychomotor performance increased in table tennis, padel, and badminton. Meanwhile, mental fatigue increased the RPE and remained unchanged in heart rate, blood glucose, and lactate, consistent with the Psychobiological model of endurance performance. Additionally, attention is suggested as a significant underlying psychobiological factor.

Abstract Photocatalysis is an environmentally friendly technology for the utilizations of solar energy and has garnered significant attention in both scientific and industrial sectors. Developing cost‐effective semiconductive materials is the core issue in photocatalysis. Bismuth‐based metal‐organic frameworks (Bi‐MOFs) have emerged as attractive candidates in various photocatalytic applications, and Bi‐MOFs derivatives further expand and consolidate their promising potential in the realm of photocatalysis. Various modification strategies including in‐situ tailoring or external doping, as well as meticulous design and selection of metal nodes and organic linkers allow for fine control over the surface multifunctionality in Bi‐MOF‐based and derived photocatalytic composites with adjustable energy band structures and enhanced photocatalytic performance. In this review, the recent progress in the synthesis of diverse Bi‐MOFs‐based materials, Bi‐MOFs derivatives, and their Bi‐containing semiconductive composites were systemically analyzed and reviewed. The state‐of‐the‐art research progresses in the applications of Bi‐MOFs and derivatives, as well as composites in photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production, photodegradation of organic pollutants, and photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction are comprehensively summarized. The relationships between structures, properties, and photocatalytic performance of Bi‐based semiconductive composites are discussed in detail. In addition, the perspectives and future challenges on Bi‐MOFs‐based and derived materials for photocatalytic applications are also offered.

Mountainous areas are of special hydrological concern because topography and atmospheric conditions can result in large and sudden floods, posing serious risks to water-related safety in neighbouring countries. The Yarlung Zangbo (YZ) River basin is the largest river basin on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), but how floods will discharge in this basin and how the role of glacier melt in floods will change throughout the 21st-century under shared socioeconomic pathways scenarios (SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5) remain unclear. Here, we comprehensively address this scientific question based on a well-validated large-scale glacier-hydrology model. The results indicate that extreme floods was projected to increase in the YZ basin, and was mainly reflected in increased duration (4–10 d per decade) and intensity (153–985 m3 s−1 per decade). Glacier runoff was projected to increase (2–30 mm per decade) throughout the 21st-century, but there was also a noticeable decrease or deceleration in glacier runoff growth in the late first half of the century under the SSP2-4.5, and in the latter half of the century under the SSP5-8.5. Glacier melt was projected to enhance the duration (12%–23%) and intensity (15%–21%) of extreme floods under both SSPs, which would aggravate the impact of future floods on the socioeconomics of the YZ basin. This effect was gradually overwhelmed by precipitation-induced floods from glacier areas to YZ outlet. This study takes the YZ basin as a projection framework example to help enrich the understanding of future flood hazards in basins affected by rainfall- or meltwater across the TP, and to help policy-makers and water managers develop future plans.

BackgroundHerbal products have long been utilized as remedies for various disease conditions, including infections. This study investigates the therapeutic mechanism of a traditional Chinese herbal combination in treating high-risk HPV infections.MethodsThe herbal formula was prepared using common herbs: dry Millettia speciosa, Guanzhong (a spermatophyte), Sarsaparilla, White Fruit, and Cockscomb Flower. Eight female patients diagnosed with high-risk HPV were enrolled from January to September 2023 at Shenzhen Hospital of Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Cervicovaginal secretions were collected before and after treatment with the herbal remedy and analyzed using non-targeted metabolomics techniques. In vitro studies were conducted using HeLa cells to determine the optimal effective concentration of the remedy, assessed via the CCK8 method. The proliferation and migration of HeLa cells were evaluated using Transwell assays. Quantitative PCR was employed to measure mRNA levels of endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) markers, including VE-Cadherin, eNOS, α-SMA, and Snail.ResultsIn vivo, significant alterations in cervicovaginal secretion metabolites post-treatment were observed through PCA, OPLS-DA, and volcano plot analyses. KEGG enrichment analysis highlighted crucial signaling pathways such as arginine and proline metabolism, purine metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, and phenylalanine metabolism, indicating the herbal combination’s systemic effects on patients. In vitro experiments demonstrated a dose-dependent reduction in HeLa cell proliferation and migration, confirmed by scratch and Transwell assays. Additionally, qPCR analysis revealed down-regulation of α-SMA and Snail, and up-regulation of VE-Cadherin and eNOS, suggesting inhibition of EndMT in HeLa cells.ConclusionThe traditional Chinese herbal combination modulates key metabolic pathways in vivo and inhibits EndMT in vitro, while reducing HeLa cell proliferation and migration. These findings highlight its potential as a therapeutic approach for managing HPV infections, bridging traditional practices with scientific research.

BackgroundHepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ranks among the most prevalent and lethal malignancies worldwide. Histone modifications (HMs) play a pivotal role in the initiation and progression of HCC. However, our understanding of HMs in HCC remains limited due to the disease’s heterogeneity and the complexity of HMs.MethodsWe integrated multi-omics data from multiple cohorts, including single-cell RNA sequencing, bulk RNA sequencing, and clinical information. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) and consensus clustering were employed to identify histone-related genes. We developed a histone modification-related signature (HMRS) using 117 machine learning methods. Comprehensive analyses of molecular characteristics, immune landscape, and drug sensitivity associated with the HMRS were performed.ResultsThrough integrative analysis, we defined 110 histone-related genes and identified 45 HCC-HM-related genes (HCC-HMRgenes). The HMRS demonstrated robust prognostic value across multiple cohorts. Patients with high HMRS scores exhibited distinct genomic alterations, including higher tumor heterogeneity and TP53 mutations. The high-risk group showed enrichment in cell cycle, DNA repair, and metabolic pathways. Immune landscape analysis revealed significant differences in immune cell infiltration and pathway activities between high- and low-risk groups. Drug sensitivity prediction suggested potential therapeutic strategies for different risk groups.ConclusionOur study provides a comprehensive understanding of HMs in HCC and establishes a robust prognostic signature. The HMRS not only stratifies patients into distinct risk groups but also offers insights into underlying molecular mechanisms, immune characteristics, and potential therapeutic strategies, paving the way for personalized medicine in HCC.

Many inflammatory disorders, including diabetic kidney disease (DKD), are associated with pyroptosis, a type of inflammation-regulated cell death. The purpose of this work was to ascertain the effects of apabetalone, which targets BRD4, a specific inhibitor of the bromodomain (BRD) and extra-terminal (BET) proteins that target bromodomain 2, on kidney injury in DKD. This study utilized pharmacological and genetic approaches to investigate the effects of apabetalone on pyroptosis in db/db mice and human tubular epithelial cells (HK-2). BRD4 levels were elevated in HK-2 cells exposed to high glucose and in db/db mice. Modulating BRD4 levels led to changes in the generation of inflammatory cytokines and cell pyroptosis linked to NLRP3 inflammasome in HK-2 cells and db/db mice. Likewise, these cellular processes were mitigated by apabetalone through inhibition BRD4. Apabetalone or BRD4 siRNA suppressed PLK1 expression in HK-2 cells under high glucose by P300-dependent H3K27 acetylation on the PLK1 gene promoter, as demonstrated through chromatin immunoprecipitation and immunoprecipitation assays. To summarize, apabetalone relieves renal proptosis and fibrosis in DKD. BRD4 regulates the P300/H3K27ac/PLK1 axis, leading to the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and subsequent cell pyroptosis, inflammation, and fibrosis. These results may provide new perspectives on DKD treatment.

Objective: This study aimed to explore andrographolide’s mechanism of action and its protective effect on noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Materials and Methods: A mice animal model for NIHL was established through exposure to broadband noise at 120 dB sound pressure level for 4 h. Transcriptomics analysis and pharmacodynamic experiments were carried out. Results: Andrographolide enters the inner ear and effectively prevents hearing damage following noise exposure in the mice model for permanent hearing loss. Moreover, treatment with andrographolide inhibited the excessive activation of inflammatory factors in the cochleae of noise-exposed mice. Conclusion: Andrographolide might be a promising candidate for auditory protective drug investigation.

ObjectiveThis study aims to analyze the effects of plyometric training (PT) on physical fitness and skill-related performance in female basketball players.MethodFive databases, including Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, EBSCOhost, and Google Scholar, were used to select articles published up to 20 December 2023, using a combination of keywords related to PT and female basketball players. The risk of bias and the certainty of evidence in included articles were assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias (RoB2) tool and “The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation” (GRADE).ResultsTen studies were included for the systematic review, and eight for the meta-analysis, totalling 246 female basketball players aged 14.5–22.5 years. Most of these players were highly trained. Most of the included studies exhibited concerns regarding the risk of bias. The PT programs lasted 4–8 weeks, conducted 2–3 sessions per week, with sessions lasting 20–90 min and including 29–190 jumps. In the systematic review, most studies showed that PT significantly improved performance in countermovement jump (CMJ), squat jump (SJ), Sargent jump, standing long jump, lateral hop, medicine ball throw, t-Test, Illinois agility, lane agility drill, linear 20-m sprint, stable and dynamic leg balance, dribbling, passing, shooting, and various basketball-specific tests, as well as increased muscle volume and thigh cross-sectional area. However, some studies showed PT to induce no significant changes in performance during CMJ, t-Test, Illinois agility, knee extensor/flexor strength, linear sprint, and single leg balance tests. In the meta-analysis, CMJ height (ES = 0.37; p = 0.036), vertical jump (VJ) peak power (ES = 0.57; p = 0.015), VJ peak velocity (ES = 0.26; p = 0.004), and t-Test performance time (ES = 0.32; p = 0.004) were significantly improved with small effects following PT.ConclusionThe effect of PT on performance in female basketball players was mixed. Most studies indicated that PT could improve various measures of physical fitness and skill-related performance, but performance remained unchanged in some tests. Abstract The deleterious effects of mental fatigue (MF) on athletes have been carefully studied in various sports, such as soccer, badminton, and swimming. Even though many researchers have sought ways to ameliorate the negative impact of MF, there is still a lack of studies that review the interventions used to counteract MF among athletes. This review aims to report the current evidence exploring the effects of interventions on MF and sport-specific performance, including sport-specific motor performance and perceptual-cognitive skills. Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and SPORTDicus (EBSCOhost) were combed through to find relevant publications. Additionally, the references and Google Scholar were searched for any grey literature. For the current review, we included only randomized controlled trials that involved athletes, a primary task to induce MF, interventions to counter MF with comparable protocols, and the outcomes of sport-specific motor performance and perceptual-cognitive skill. The selection criteria resulted in the inclusion of 10 articles. The manipulations of autonomous self-control exertion, person-fit, nature exposure, mindfulness, and transactional direct current stimulation showed that positive interventions counteract MF and improve sport-specific performance in different domains, including strength, speed, skill, stamina, and perceptual-cognitive skills. The selected interventions could significantly counteract MF and improve subsequent sport-specific performance. Moreover, self-regulation and attention resources showed the importance of the potential mechanisms behind the relevant interventions.

Abstract Objective To tackle non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) among patients and find the most effective solution and to quantitatively synthesize the overall effect of motor control training (MCT) compared with Pilates, McKenzie method, and physical therapy (PT) in pain and physical function. Methods Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of four types of intervention (MCT, Pilates, McKenzie method, and PT) for LBP were collected by searching PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials), and Scopus databases from the establishment of the database to September 30, 2023. The risk of bias was evaluated for included studies using the Revised Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2.0). Taking pain and physical function in the experimental and control groups as outcome indicators, subgroup analysis was performed according to the intervention method to calculate the standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Dobinin K is a novel eudesmane sesquiterpenoids compound isolated from the root of Dobinea delavayi and displays potential antiplasmodial activity in vivo. Here, we evaluate the antiplasmodial activity of dobinin K in vitro and study its acting mechanism. The antiplasmodial activity of dobinin K in vitro was evaluated by concentration-, time-dependent, and stage-specific parasite inhibition assay. The potential target of dobinin K on Plasmodium falciparum was predicted by transcriptome analysis. Apoptosis of P. falciparum was detected by Giemsa, Hoechst 33258, and TUNEL staining assay. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, oxygen consumption, and mitochondrial membrane potential of P. falciparum were assessed by DCFH-DA, R01, and JC-1 fluorescent dye, respectively. The effect of dobinin K on the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) was investigated by enzyme activity analysis and the binding abilities of dobinin K with different enzymes were learned by molecular docking. Dobinin K inhibited the growth of P. falciparum in a concentration-, time-dependent, and stage-specific manner. The predicted mechanism of dobinin K was related to the redox system of P. falciparum. Dobinin K increased intracellular ROS levels of P. falciparum and induced their apoptosis. After dobinin K treatment, P. falciparum mitochondria lost their function, which was presented as decreased oxygen consumption and depolarization of the membrane potential. Among five dehydrogenases in P. falciparum ETC, dobinin K displayed the best inhibitory power on NDH2 activity. Our findings indicate that the antiplasmodial effect of dobinin K in vitro is mediated by the enhancement of the ROS level in P. falciparum and the disruption of its mitochondrial function.

Efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for the performance of fuel cells and other electrochemical devices. Seeking for stable and electrochemically selective 2e- and 4e- ORR electrocatalyst is yet a challenge, making the design extremely important and outmost of interest. In this study, we demonstrate a method to tune ORR selectivity by adjusting the local cobalt density through oligo-/polymerization of π-conjugated cobalt(III) A2B and A3-corroles to linear and two-dimensional matrix structures. These heterogeneous catalysts exhibit remarkable physicochemical properties, fast charge transfer kinetics, electrochemical reversibility, and high durability. Unselective three-electron transfer kinetics with n = 2.5–2.9 in between −0.20 V and +0.40 V vs. RHE are detected with the π-conjugated cobalt(III) A2B- corrole polymers. Highly selective four-electron kinetics with n = 3.7 in between −0.20 V and +0.40 V vs. RHE are detected by employing the cobalt A3-corrole oligomers during the ORR catalysis.

The coordination between actin and microtubule network is crucial, yet this remains a challenging problem to dissect and our understanding of the underlying mechanisms remains limited. In this study, we used travelling waves in the cell cortex to characterize the collective dynamics of cytoskeletal networks. Our findings show that Cdc42 and F-BAR-dependent actin waves in mast cells are mainly driven by formin-mediated actin polymerization, with the microtubule-binding formin FH2 domain-containing protein 1 (FHDC1) as an early regulator. Knocking down FHDC1 inhibits actin wave formation, and this inhibition require FHDC1’s interaction with both microtubule and actin. The phase of microtubule depolymerization coincides with the nucleation of actin waves and microtubule stabilization inhibit actin waves, leading us to propose that microtubule shrinking and the concurrent release of FHDC1 locally regulate actin nucleation. Lastly, we show that FHDC1 is crucial for multiple cellular processes such as cell division and migration. Our data provided molecular insights into the nucleation mechanisms of actin waves and uncover an antagonistic interplay between microtubule and actin polymerization in their collective dynamics.

Polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) is manufactured and applied extensively due to its superior disinfectant capabilities. However, the inhalatory exposure to PHMG aerosols is increasingly recognized as a potential instigator of pulmonary fibrosis, prompting an urgent call for elucidation of the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. Within this context, alveolar macrophages play a pivotal role in the primary immune defense in the respiratory tract. Dysregulated lipid metabolism within alveolar macrophages leads to the accumulation of foam cells, a process that is intimately linked with the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis. Therefore, this study examines PHMG's effects on alveolar macrophage foaminess and its underlying mechanisms. We conducted a 3-week inhalation exposure followed by a 3-week recovery period in C57BL/6 J mice using a whole-body exposure system equipped with a disinfection aerosol generator (WESDAG). The presence of lipid-laden alveolar macrophages and downregulation of pulmonary tissue lipid transport proteins ABCA1 and ABCG1 were observed in mice. In cell culture models involving lipid-loaded macrophages, we demonstrated that PHMG promotes foam cell formation by inhibiting lipid efflux in mouse alveolar macrophages. Furthermore, PHMG-induced foam cells were found to promote an increase in the release of TGF-β1, fibronectin deposition, and collagen remodeling. In vivo interventions were subsequently implemented on mice exposed to PHMG aerosols, aiming to restore macrophage lipid efflux function. Remarkably, this intervention demonstrated the potential to retard the progression of pulmonary fibrosis. In conclusion, this study underscores the pivotal role of macrophage foaming in the pathogenesis of PHMG disinfectants-induced pulmonary fibrosis. Moreover, it provides compelling evidence to suggest that the regulation of macrophage efflux function holds promise for mitigating the progression of pulmonary fibrosis, thereby offering novel insights into the mechanisms underlying inhaled PHMG disinfectants-induced pulmonary fibrosis.

Angels and guishen 鬼神, as entities distinct from humans, hold great importance in Chinese and Judaeo-Christian cultures, respectively. Since they share similar roles in providing moral guidance, Jesuit missionaries attempted to identify angels with the guishen to facilitate the introduction of the Catholic cult of angels to China. However, as the Chinese reverence for guishen differed somewhat from the Catholic cult of angels, this identification posed significant doctrinal questions. This article uses the issue of reverence for guishen to review the missionaries’ different understandings and interpretations of Chinese guishen. By distinguishing three different attitudes and positions towards Chinese guishen, it shows that both sides, adhering to their respective cultural centers, are unable to resolve the debates on these spirits, whether interpreting the West through Chinese perspectives, as “Sinicizing Christianity” 以儒化耶, or interpreting China through Western perspectives, as “Christianizing Confucianism” 以耶化儒. Therefore, this article argues that although the controversies over the nature and reverence of guishen between China and the West are unavoidable, there is still common ground in their understanding of sacred existence. As demonstrated by the missionaries’ recognition, interpretation, and understanding of Chinese guishen at different times, it reveals the inherent tension between Chinese and Western cultures.

Nanocrystalline core is widely used in the design process of high-frequency transformers and inductors due to the attractive magnetic properties of nanocrystalline material. However, the flux density distribution is nonuniform in the core because the reluctance is closely related to its geometric shape. The nonuniformity of flux density distribution may cause huge calculation errors of core losses. In this paper, Finite Element Method (FEM) is used to justify taking into account nonuniform distribution of flux density during the process of core loss calculation. An improved loss separation equation considering nonuniform distribution of flux density is proposed, and the improved equation is verified through calculating and analyzing the losses of nanocrystalline cores with different wound thicknesses. Compared with the traditional loss separation equation, the accuracy is improved, and the average error of improved equation is confined in 10%.

In order to study the fatigue development and change pattern of apron controllers in the process of each work, experiments were carried out at Beijing Daxing International Airport, and the physiological data of personnel were collected by smart band senselessly. The incremental relationship between heart rate characteristics and personnel reaction time before and after work was compared and analyzed; the change in duty time, workload and heart rate of controllers were studied quantitatively, and the regulatory role of the body and fatigue changes were analyzed, then the pattern of heart rate changes with fatigue development was found. The results of the study showed that the heart rate characteristics were related to the workload of the controllers, correlated with the change pattern of personnel reaction time characteristics. The p-values are less than 0.05. So the fatigue state of personnel could be objectively characterized by heart rate. The heart rate of apron controllers showed a jittering decreasing trend during 3 h of work, and its distribution showed obvious banded dense areas. The relative heart rate gradually decreases from 0.6 to about 0.2. The 95% confidence intervals for time of the occurrence of minimal values of heart rate during the first 2 h and the last 1 h of work time were statistically estimated as [57.38,81.42] and [143.79,155.45] respectively, and further calculated the corresponding confidence intervals for number of flights, which are the possible fatigue severity intervals. The study can provide valuable references for controller shift management and personnel status monitoring timing during daily work.

In a companion paper, we present the first spatially resolved polarized image of Sagittarius A* on event horizon scales, captured using the Event Horizon Telescope, a global very long baseline interferometric array operating at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. Here we interpret this image using both simple analytic models and numerical general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations. The large spatially resolved linear polarization fraction (24%–28%, peaking at ∼40%) is the most stringent constraint on parameter space, disfavoring models that are too Faraday depolarized. Similar to our studies of M87*, polarimetric constraints reinforce a preference for GRMHD models with dynamically important magnetic fields. Although the spiral morphology of the polarization pattern is known to constrain the spin and inclination angle, the time-variable rotation measure (RM) of Sgr A* (equivalent to ≈46° ± 12° rotation at 228 GHz) limits its present utility as a constraint. If we attribute the RM to internal Faraday rotation, then the motion of accreting material is inferred to be counterclockwise, contrary to inferences based on historical polarized flares, and no model satisfies all polarimetric and total intensity constraints. On the other hand, if we attribute the mean RM to an external Faraday screen, then the motion of accreting material is inferred to be clockwise, and one model passes all applied total intensity and polarimetric constraints: a model with strong magnetic fields, a spin parameter of 0.94, and an inclination of 150°. We discuss how future 345 GHz and dynamical imaging will mitigate our present uncertainties and provide additional constraints on the black hole and its accretion flow.

The Event Horizon Telescope observed the horizon-scale synchrotron emission region around the Galactic center supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), in 2017. These observations revealed a bright, thick ring morphology with a diameter of 51.8 ± 2.3 μ as and modest azimuthal brightness asymmetry, consistent with the expected appearance of a black hole with mass M ≈ 4 × 10 ^6 M _⊙ . From these observations, we present the first resolved linear and circular polarimetric images of Sgr A*. The linear polarization images demonstrate that the emission ring is highly polarized, exhibiting a prominent spiral electric vector polarization angle pattern with a peak fractional polarization of ∼40% in the western portion of the ring. The circular polarization images feature a modestly (∼5%–10%) polarized dipole structure along the emission ring, with negative circular polarization in the western region and positive circular polarization in the eastern region, although our methods exhibit stronger disagreement than for linear polarization. We analyze the data using multiple independent imaging and modeling methods, each of which is validated using a standardized suite of synthetic data sets. While the detailed spatial distribution of the linear polarization along the ring remains uncertain owing to the intrinsic variability of the source, the spiraling polarization structure is robust to methodological choices. The degree and orientation of the linear polarization provide stringent constraints for the black hole and its surrounding magnetic fields, which we discuss in an accompanying publication.

The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870 μ m wavelength (345 GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on intercontinental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in 2018 October. The longest-baseline detections approach 11 G λ , corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19 μ as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870 μ m is comparable to that at 1.3 mm on the relevant integration timescales between 2 and 100 s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870 μ m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time.

Narrative skills play an important role in children's reading, communication, and critical thinking. Most studies on narrative skills are based on monolingual children from middle- to upper middle-class populations and few have examined bilingual children's narratives outside of the western context. These factors may impose different sociocultural influences on children's storytelling abilities. The current study focuses on English-Mandarin bilingual children in Singapore and explores: (1) how English-Mandarin bilinguals apply their Mandarin lexical-grammatical proficiency to a given narrative task and (2) the compensatory strategies they employ in their Mandarin narratives. Data was obtained from 186 K1 pre-schoolers (85 boys and 101 girls) aged four to five. Children's Mandarin narrative skills were assessed with the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN; Gagarina et al. in ZAS Pap Linguist 56:155-155, 2012. https://doi.org/10.21248/zaspil.56.2019.414). Their macrostructural knowledge (e.g., story grammar) was scored with the MAIN coding scheme, and their microstructural knowledge (e.g., mean length of utterance) was calculated with CLAN. Children's Mandarin lexical-grammatical proficiency (i.e., receptive vocabulary, receptive grammar, and semantic fluency) was assessed with standard tests. The results indicate that compared to children's microstructural knowledge, their macrostructural knowledge was more influenced by their Mandarin competence. Children used a variety of strategies to compensate for their limited Mandarin competence, and the most frequently used ones were generalisation (e.g., all classifiers of nouns were "[foreign character omitted]"), codeswitching (at both the word and sentential levels), and sentential structural transfer.

This study examined the within- and cross-language relationships between intrinsic language learning motivation, home literacy environment (shared book reading, parental literacy involvement, and parent perceived child literacy interest), and receptive vocabulary in 185 bilingual preschoolers and 233 primary school children in Singapore. Age differences were also examined. Unlike the motivation decline commonly observed in middle childhood, the primary school children demonstrated higher levels of intrinsic motivation than the preschoolers in both English and the second language (L2). Results showed a motivation gap between English and children's L2 in primary school children but not in preschoolers. The hierarchical regression results revealed that intrinsic motivation and the three facets of home literacy environment (HLE) were differentially involved in receptive vocabulary across languages and age groups. Within-language relations showed that intrinsic motivation only predicted receptive vocabulary in English among primary school children, but not among preschoolers. Among primary school children, parent perceived child literacy interest in L2 was the only significant predictor of L2 receptive vocabulary; among preschoolers, shared book reading was the only significant predictor. Cross-language relations revealed that parental literacy involvement in English negatively predicted L2 receptive vocabulary in primary school children, and there were no L2 effects on English receptive vocabulary.

Information and communications technology (ICT) is now widely used in education. However, the effect of ICT on the development of students' scientific higher-order thinking skills (S-HOTS) is a controversial issue in science education research. This has attracted significant attention from researchers worldwide in the field of educational technology. Purpose: In this study, a novel framework for students' S-HOTS is proposed based on Marzano's new taxonomy to determine the impact of ICT on S-HOTS. And exploring the difference in the impact of ICT on S-HOTS in two different countries. Sample: The data for this study were obtained from the Science Assessment and ICT Familiarity Questionnaire of the PISA 2015 survey for Finnish and Chinese students. This survey measures the differences in economic and educational levels and literacy in each country and tests the knowledge and skills necessary for life in reading, mathematics, and science for students (15 years old), through a detailed pre-testing country field study to make the results comparable across countries. Design and methods: We used the Delphi methodology to determine the framework of S-HOTS and a regression analysis to analyse the effects of ICT on students' S-HOTS. Results: The results demonstrate how the availability, use frequency and use time of ICT affect S-HOTS. Furthermore, we compared the results between China (9841 students) and Finland (2538 students), and these findings demonstrated that ICT use at school has a negative effect on S-HOTS, especially ICT use time in school. We also found that using an interactive whiteboard positively and significantly affects S-HOTS. Conclusion: The results suggest that the effect of ICT use on S-HOTS in school depends on the ICT method combined with the learning process. Consequently, the use of ICT in schools should be viewed dialectically to promote students' S-HOTS.

Little is known about the impact of teachers' questions on child bilingual's heritage language reading process and outcomes. This study examined the role of adults' questions in English-Mandarin bilingual preschoolers' Mandarin word learning, story comprehension, and reading engagement. Ninety-nine 4- to 5-year-old preschoolers in Singapore were assigned to one of the three reading conditions: (a) reading with contextualized questions (e.g., labelling), (b) reading with decontextualized questions (e.g., inference), and (c) reading without questions. The experimenters read three storybooks to the children three times over 2 weeks. Children's general Mandarin proficiency was tested before the intervention, and their target words knowledge and story comprehension were tested before and after the intervention. Children's reading engagement in each reading was assessed with a modified Child Behavior Rating Scale. The results demonstrate that not all aspects of Mandarin performance and reading engagement have benefitted from the experimenter's questions. Contextualized questions were found to significantly enhance children's word meaning explanation and story retelling. Contextualized and decontextualized questions lead to higher increase in social-cognitive engagement but resulted in faster decrease in behavioral and affective engagement over repetitive readings. Furthermore, children's initial Mandarin proficiency influences their reading process and outcomes. Generally, the better their Mandarin vocabulary knowledge was, the more they could enjoy and benefit from the reading, whether they were asked questions or not.

A thorough insight into the initiation, segmentation, propagation and interaction of multitrend basin-bounding faults is crucial to restoring the growth history of the faults and clarifying the fault growth pattern and its influence on the structures developed along the margin due to the growth of the basinbounding faults, but systematic studies on the individual influence of the evolution of each fault segment on the present structure are lacking. Based on 3D seismic data, the timing and growth of multitrend basin-bounding faults were analysed using T-z plots and throw backstripping, allowing us to determine the individual effects that each fault segment evolution exerteds on the present-day configuration of the northern margin of the Nanpu Sag. The basinbounding fault is composed of the Xinanzhuang and Baigezhuang faults, and the Xinanzhuang fault comprises three linked segments with varying orientations (i.e., NE-SW, E-W, and NNE-SSW). In comparison, the Baigezhuang fault comprises only two linked NW-SE-oriented fault segments. The evolution process can be divided into three stages. (1) During the early synrift I stage, namely, the isolated fault stage, five isolated multitrend basin-bounding segments were active. (2) During the late synrift I stage, namely, the hard-linkage stage, the five segments propagated laterally and linked with each other, behaving as a single fault. Meanwhile, the NE-trending No. 5 Fault bifurcated upward from the basin-bounding fault to accommodate local stress, and the NW-trending Gaobei Fault deviated from the basin-bounding fault controlled by local stresses induced by differential activities of the multitrend fault segments under the same far-field stress. (3) During the synrift II to postrift linkage development stage, the extension orientation changed from NW-SE- to N-S, and additional displacement accumulated along the basin-bounding fault without further lateral propagation. Newly formed E-W- trending faults developed orthogonal to the extension orientation and linked with preexisting NE- or NW- trending faults, forming a complex fault zone. In addition, influenced by the geometry of the basin-bounding fault, the Laoyemiao Anticline formed by gravitational collapse under the dual action of a rollover anticline and transverse anticline. Furthermore, the evolution of the basin-bounding faults played an important role in controlling the source-to-sink system, and the transition zone was the main provenance channel formed by the segmented growth of the faults. This study provides new insight into multitrend large fault evolution, and their impact on basin development provides a comprehensive explanation of the later structures developed in polyphase rifts. A comprehensive understanding of spatiotemporal runoff changes at a sub-basin scale of the Yarlung Zangbo (YZ) basin on the southern Tibetan Plateau (TP), amidst varying climatic and cryospheric conditions, is imperative for effective water resources management. However, spatiotemporal differences of runoff composition, change and the attribution within the YZ basin have not been extensively explored, primarily due to the lack of hydrometeorological observations, especially in the downstream region. In this study, we investigated historical and future evolution of annual and seasonal total water availability, as well as glacier runoff and snowmelt contributions across six sub-basins of the YZ with a particular focus on the comparison between the upstream Nuxia (NX) basin and the downstream Nuxia-Pasighat (NX-BXK) basin, based on a newly generated precipitation dataset and a well-validated model with streamflow, glacier mass, and snow cover observations. Our findings revealed large spatiotemporal differences in changes exist within the YZ basin for 1971-2020. Firstly, runoff generation was dominated by rainfall runoff throughout the YZ basin, with glacier runoff playing more important role in the annual total runoff (19%) in the NX-BXK sub-basin compared to other sub-basins. Notably, glacier runoff contributed 52% of the total runoff at the Pasighat outlet of the YZ basin. Secondly, annual runoff exhibited an increasing trend in the NX basin but a decreasing trend in the NX-BXK, primarily attributed to rainfall runoff changes influenced by atmospheric moisture. Glacier runoff enhanced water supply, by offsetting the decreasing contribution from rainfall. Total runoff will consistently increase (27-100 mm/10yr) across the sub-basins through the 21st century, resulting from increased rainfall runoff and a minor effect of increased snowmelt and glacier runoff. Offshore small-scale fisheries, constituting 31% of global marine captures, are crucial for the promotion of sustainable fisheries. However, current fishery monitoring, assessments, and management remain incomplete. Nighttime remote sensing provides a critical perspective for monitoring fishery activities. Thus, in this study, a dynamic threshold fishing vessel detection (DTFVD) model was developed to assess and manage the spatiotemporal variations of offshore fisheries. Results demonstrated that the DTFVD model provides superior accuracy in nighttime fishery monitoring and can successfully identify a robust seasonal bimodal distribution of the Yellow-Bohai Sea's fisheries. By analysing the impacts of climate, environmental, and policy factors, this study reveals that ocean dynamics affect the seasonal and geographic distribution of offshore nighttime fisheries by enhancing ocean mixing and ecological processes. The effects of the COVID-19 lockdowns and Chinese summer fishing moratorium on offshore fisheries were also determined by nighttime remote sensing. According to future climate warming predictions, the habitats for the recruited migratory fish population may gradually move northward and disappear under climate risks, leading to the disappearance of suitable fishing areas for nighttime fisheries. Therefore, this study suggests integrating nighttime remote sensing into offshore fishery monitoring and assessment efforts for climateadapted fishery management strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Subduction is a fundamental geodynamic process that transfers carbon from Earth's surface into the mantle. However, current understanding of the migration mechanisms, final storage region, and species involved in carbon recycling from continental crust remains limited. Here, we investigated the compositions of polyphasic inclusions and Mg isotopes in postcollisional mafic magmatic rocks from the Dabie Shan region of China. The main rock-forming minerals contained two distinct types of polyphasic inclusions, which displayed systematic differences in daughter mineral/gaseous phase assemblages, including host-like silicates ± carbonates (magnesite, dolomite, and calcite) + CH4 and carbonates + talc ± SiO2 (aqueous) + CH4, respectively. These inclusions indicate that carbon-rich silicate melts and carbon-rich magmatic fluids were trapped by host minerals during magmatic processes. The abundant carbonates and CH4 in both types of inclusions suggest that the mantle source of these postcollisional mafic magmatic rocks was rich in carbon, most likely existing in the forms of CO2 and CH4. Moreover, the studied postcollisional mafic magmatic rocks have mantle-like Mg isotope compositions, with d26Mg values ranging from -0.23‰ to -0.16‰. The combined observations of polyphase inclusions and Mg isotopes indicate that a substantial carbon-rich mantle domain arose from the metasomatism of silicate melts derived from subducted continental slabs that had dissolved a certain quantity of CO2 and CH4. We proposed that continental subduction is an efficient pathway for transporting crustal carbon into an orogenic subcontinental lithospheric mantle wedge, where the recycled carbon can be stored for >100 m.y. and eventually released to the surface during postcollisional magmatism. Abstract We aimed to distinguish Synodontis eupterus and Synodontis polli. We performed sequencing and bioinformatic analysis of their mitochondrial genomes and constructed a phylogenetic tree of Mochokidae fish using maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods based on protein-coding gene (PCG) sequences of 14 Mochokidae species. The total length of the S. eupterus mitochondrial genome was 16,579 bp, including 13 (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, and one D-loop, with an AT-biased nucleotide composition (56.0%). The total length of the S. polli mitochondrial genome was 16,544 bp, including 13 PCGs, 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, and one D-loop, with an AT-biased nucleotide composition (55.0%). In both species, except for COI, PCGs use ATG as the starting codon, the vast majority use TAG or TAA as the ending codon, and a few use incomplete codons (T - or TA -) as the ending codon. Phylogenetic analysis showed that S. eupterus and Synodontis clarias converged into one branch, S. polli and Synodontis petricola converged into one branch, Mochokiella paynei, Mochokus brevis, and nine species of the genus Synodontis converged into one branch, and M. paynei clustered with the genus Synodontis. This study lays a foundation for rebuilding a clearer Mochokidae fish classification system.

Parapristipoma trilineatum is an edible and economically important marine fish with high farming potential; however, this fish has not been widely investigated. To understand the germplasm resources of this marine fish, we investigated the range of P. trilineatum from Maizuru, Japan, to Hainan, China. Using the mitochondrial control region as a molecular marker, we analyzed the population structure, genetic diversity, and population history dynamics of P. trilineatum. The control region exhibited high haplotype diversity and nucleotide diversity of 0.996 and 0.016, respectively. The genetic differentiation coefficients indicated low differentiation between Japanese and other populations. Additionally, based on the results of SAMOVA, AMOVA, and genetic differentiation coefficients, P. trilineatum can be divided into two management units in fishery resources management: China and Japan. Populations with high genetic diversity are useful as genetic breeding materials. This study provides a basis for the selection and breeding of P. trilineatum.

Honeycomb‐layered oxides are a class of cathode materials for sodium‐ion batteries with great potential due to their high voltage and high capacity. However, the structural instability and voltage fading during cycling limit their practical application. Herein, it is revealed that Te substitution into Na3Ni2SbO6 induces a new dual‐honeycomb structure, which can elevate the average discharge voltage of the cathode materials from 3.2 to 3.8 V with improved cycle stability and alleviated voltage decay. Synchrotron operando X‐ray diffraction demonstrates that Te substitution can suppress the O3−P3−O1‐phase transition during charge and discharge processes effectively, benefited from the strong TeO covalent bonds. The resulted Na2.2Ni2Sb0.2Te0.8O6 cathode exhibits a high capacity retention of 70.9% after 1000 cycles at 1C, with an elevated operating voltage of ≈3.8 V. Theoretical calculations reveal that the introduced TeO bonds break the symmetric distribution of charge in Ni/Sb honeycomb structure and elevate the operation voltage by increased valence band width. Proper Te substitution can promote the rate and cycle capability of the cathode by suppressing phase transition and decreasing the bandgap.

Individuals experiencing obesity or overweight conditions frequently encounter difficulties in managing their appetite. The sustained practice of resistance training over an extended duration presents a potential avenue for regulating appetite among this demographic. Despite the extensive examination of long-term resistance training in existing literature, a consensus on pertinent issues remains elusive, necessitating a comprehensive review. This paper aims to evaluate empirical studies examining alterations in energy intake and appetite among obese or overweight individuals engaging in prolonged resistance training regimens. Information was gathered from databases including EBSCOhost, Science Direct, PubMed, and Web of Science. Search queries were executed on Google Scholar and other sources, utilizing key terms pertinent to energy intake (or appetite), resistance training, and overweight (or obesity) for identifying relevant studies. A comprehensive evaluation of 38 full-text articles was conducted, resulting in the inclusion of eight articles in the review. The PEDro scale was utilized to assess bias and completeness risk, with no exclusion of any articles during this process. The impact of resistance training on energy intake in overweight or obese individuals was observed through sessions lasting 35-45 minutes conducted twice a week over a nine-month period. The exercise significantly influenced parameters such as energy intake, glucose levels, leptin concentrations, Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), Neuropeptide Y (NPY), and adiponectin. However, no significant effects were noted on perceived fullness and hunger, ghrelin PP, or PYY. Resistance training has the potential to impact energy intake and appetite regulation in overweight or obese individuals. Further research is warranted, particularly in exploring its effects on female and adolescent populations, implementing a sample size calculation strategy, conducting comparisons across three intensities, and undertaking a comprehensive analysis of relevant variables.
