Disruptions often call for rapid innovation at scale. Open innovation (OI) is critical in such contexts because it allows organizations to access resources beyond the firm's boundaries. Yet, many OI projects fail, posing significant risks during disruptions. This article examines 12 ventilator development projects during the COVID-19 pandemic, of which only seven succeeded. Fifty-five interviews were analyzed to understand how organizational roles influence the outcomes of OI projects in times of disruption. Service-oriented manufacturing has been a prevalent trend in integrating product collaborative development with maintenance service, whereas the final products are frequently trapped into severe quality defects lacking appropriate contracting incentives. This paper establishes a tractable framework investigating the alignment of inspection and warranty strategies to manage product quality throughout the R&D, manufacturing and usage processes. Specifically, the manufacturing effort is motivated by a cost-sharing contract provided by the researcher, who performs quality inspection upon receiving the final product. Subsequent maintenance service is predesignated for warranty period coverage that the cost is partially claimed for compensation from the manufacturer. Under both breakdown and preventive maintenance strategies, we elaborate and compare the optimal incentive intensities solving the equilibrium effort decisions and inspection accuracy. The results suggest that both R&D and manufacturing effort levels under preventive maintenance are slightly higher than that under breakdown maintenance scenario, while inspection accuracy contradicts conversely. The breakdown maintenance strategy is associated with a lower proportion of warranty costs borne by the manufacturer. For a sufficient long warranty period, the researcher is better off to conduct preventive maintenance periodically. We examine how short product life cycle lengths constrain real activities management among a group of manufacturing firms. Companies with short-cycle products face fast product obsolescence and constant pressure to develop and market new products. Fast product obsolescence increases the cost of overproduction, while constant pressure for new product development increases the cost of opportunistic spending cuts. We predict and find evidence that in general, short-cycle firms do not beat earnings thresholds through overproduction and discretionary spending cuts as extensively as long-cycle firms do. However, since the Sarbanes-Oxley Act came into effect, short-cycle firms have increasingly overproduced, and there is no longer a difference in overproduction between short- and long-cycle firms. Moreover, the presence of major customers attenuates the relationship between product life cycle lengths and real activities management, while a large market share and high fixed-assets intensity both accentuate the relationship. To deal with the growing amount of e-waste propelled by introduction of new products, increasing governments are considering amending take-back regulations to impose more stringent collection targets. Motivated by this trend, this study focuses on the reuse policy for e-waste with three factors: product innovation degrees, collection targets, and reuse decisions. We first confirm the traditional wisdom that a higher innovation degree often results in a higher profitability but hurts the environment. As such, we agree with the suggestion that the environmental agencies need to impose more stringent collection targets to deal with the growing amount of e-waste propelled by new product introduction. Moreover, our analysis further indicates that the more stringent collection target results in an inverted U-shaped curve for profitability and lower environmental impact. Therefore, besides confirming the intuitive expectation, we also add a word of caution on the recast of WEEE Direct: although tightening the overall collection target for the OEM is a powerful tool, we still call for the governments and environmental agencies, rather proceeding from the entire industry, should amend take-back regulations to set detailed collection targets based on the specific products characterised by the rate of innovation. Retaining talented salespeople is crucial for a company's survival. One effective strategy for retaining employees is to actively involve them in significant business decisions. Salespeople, however, differ significantly from their colleagues, for example, they are typically highly customer-oriented. Therefore, integrating them into new product development (NPD) may be a potentially valuable approach for firms to retain them. Nonetheless, salesforce integration (SI) into NPD is more intricate than initially thought. It may involve both psychological SI benefits (such as feeling valued or competent) and costs (including potential conflicts with NPD team members or role conflicts), thus differently affecting a salesperson's willingness to stay with the firm. To learn more about the intriguing link between SI into NPD and salesperson retention, we conducted a qualitative study and applied grounded theory to conceptualize this relationship. We identify key mediators (psychological SI benefits and costs) and moderators (such as company, NPD team, salesperson, procedural, relationship, or product characteristics) that can influence the SI-into-NPD-salesperson-retention connection and develop related, relevant propositions. All of these insights are integrated into a cohesive framework and we present a research agenda to guide future exploration of this critical subject. We study how patenting enhances customer capital and creates financial value in a product market characterized by information asymmetry between firm insiders and customers. We find that firms with more and higher quality patents develop greater customer capital, as measured by more positive customer perceptions of product novelty and quality. To establish causality, we exploit the exogenous variation in the random assignment of patent examiners to review applications and use the average examiner leniency as an instrument for patent grants. The increasing complexity of industrial systems demands more effective and intelligent maintenance approaches to address manufacturing defects arising from faults in multiple asset modules. Traditional digital twin (DT) systems, however, face limitations in interoperability, knowledge sharing, and causal inference. As such, cognitive digital twins (CDTs) can add value by managing a collaborative web of interconnected systems, facilitating advanced cross-domain analysis and dynamic context considerations. This paper introduces a CDT system that leverages industrial knowledge graphs (iKGs) to support maintenance planning and operations. By employing a design structure matrix (DSM) to model dependencies and relationships, a semantic translation approach maps the knowledge into a graph-based representation for reasoning and analysis. An automatic solution generation mechanism, utilising graph sequencing with Louvain and PageRank algorithms, derives feasible solutions, which can be validated via simulation to minimise production disruption impacts. The CDT system can also identify potential disruptions in new product designs, thus enabling preventive actions to be taken. A case study featuring a print production manufacturing line illustrates the CDT system's capabilities in causal inference and solution explainability. The study concludes with a discussion of limitations and future directions, providing valuable guidelines for manufacturers aiming to enhance reactive and predictive maintenance strategies. Creative ads are applied widely in new product marketing. The present research explores the impact of creative ads (divergent vs. relevant ads) on purchase intention for really new products and incrementally new products. A series of studies concludes that (1) divergent ads are more effective for promoting incrementally new products, (2) relevant ads are more effective for promoting really new products, (3) self-referencing mediates the joint effect of creative ads and product newness on purchase intention, and (4) there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between self-referencing and purchase intention for new products. Theoretically, the authors argue that a moderate amount of self-referencing is particularly desirable—that is, there is a "Goldilocks region" that produces an optimal level of persuasion. We build a novel comprehensive data set of new product trademarks as an output measure of product development innovation. We show that risk-taking incentives in CEO compensation motivate this type of innovation and that this innovation improves firm performance. Using an exogenous shock to executive compensation, we find that reductions in stock option compensation cause reductions in new product development. We also find that firms undertaking new product development experience increases in future cash flow from operations and return on assets. In this research, the authors examine how consumers perceive the fruits of university–industry collaborations (i.e., new products codeveloped with universities). Eight studies document a positive university effect and highlight its practical significance and boundary conditions. An Instagram A/B test utilizing a video that refers (vs. does not refer) to the underlying university–industry collaboration results in higher click-through rates and ad engagement levels. Another field study demonstrates that university-codeveloped products are more attractive to consumers, even after an actual product trial. Further, several consequential studies reveal that consumers are willing to pay up to 65% more for products marketed as codeveloped with a university. The authors argue and show that collaborating with a university infuses the underlying firm with a stronger sense of scientific legitimacy, thereby making the resulting product more attractive to consumers. Congruously, the authors find that the effect is more pronounced when the scientific legitimacy engendered by universities is more important to the focal product (i.e., high tech vs. low tech), underlying company (i.e., new vs. established), or target customer (i.e., high vs. low belief in science). Two organizations that focus on tech-based health innovation have partnered to improve the mental health of young adults. In this "tech for good" project, Hopelab and Grit Digital Health worked together to create an app using human-centered product design. With the core needs of users at the forefront, the team developed an app both with and for college students to combat loneliness, a prevalent issue that can lead to other problems such as depression, anxiety, and even dropping out of college. The team also applied systems thinking to address the root causes of this "wicked problem," resulting in their Nod app, which has improved outcomes for college students. How does the viability of a product category shift over time? Studies abound on how categories emerge and become established, or fall out of use. Yet, extant research has often examined the evolution of categories one at a time, leaving open the question of how related categories affect a focal category's viability. In contrast, we consider both intra- and inter-category dynamics. Viewing categories as continuously shaped by actors' efforts to position their products, we argue that these efforts alter the coherence that products exhibit not only within a category (a category's heterogeneity), but also across related categories (a category's distinctiveness). We theorize how the interaction between a category's heterogeneity and distinctiveness shapes its subsequent viability. When a focal category's distinctiveness is low, the heterogeneity–viability relationship takes an inverted U-shape. However, as distinctiveness grows, the relationship flattens and eventually flips to a U-shape. We explain this by considering the trade-off between the "classification" and "valuation" benefits that a category affords. We find support for our argument by tracking 170 categories over an 11-year period on Kickstarter, one of the largest crowdfunding platforms. Research on the tension between exploration and exploitation has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of firm growth via entry into new businesses. While there is consensus about the merits of balancing exploration and exploitation, there has been debate about the best means for achieving balance. In our prior analysis of firms' choices between acquisition and internal development as entry modes, we found that the role of acquisitions tends to differ inside versus outside a firm's primary business domain: firms use within-domain acquisitions largely for exploitation, while out-of-domain acquisitions support exploration. To examine these issues in greater depth, we focus here on the historical use of acquisition versus internal development by two major technology firms, Amazon and Alphabet. We show that the two firms have been remarkably different in their use of acquisitions versus internal development. Consistent with our prior analysis, Amazon has emphasized internal development but has used acquisitions to strengthen its existing businesses and to enter new products and services that were (initially) outside Amazon's primary business domain. In contrast, Alphabet has relied heavily on acquisitions to enter new businesses within its primary domain but has emphasized internal development of "moonshot" businesses outside this domain. These differences illuminate the use of acquisitions in market entry and make clear that there is no single right way to utilize acquisition versus internal development in the pursuit of balance between exploration and exploitation. Research Summary: This research addresses the tension of audiences often rejecting creative products despite creativity being foundational to organizational success. To better understand this issue, we take an abductive approach to disentangle the effects of creative content (how creative the core concept is) and creative packaging (how creatively the core concept is presented and visualized) while accounting for audiences' different expertise levels. Across two archival studies and a pre‐registered experiment, we find that both experts and general audiences react positively to creative content. However, reactions to creative packaging display greater variability: on average, experts react positively whereas general audiences react negatively. We find no interaction between the two variables. We discuss the theoretical implications of these findings for the literature. Managerial Summary: While creativity is foundational to organizational success, audiences often reject creative products. Across two archival studies and an experiment, we show how the effect of creativity on different audience's reception can be better understood when disentangling creative content (how creative the core concept is) from creative packaging (how creatively the core concept is presented and visualized). Our results suggest that companies should (a) invest more resources in developing products high in creative content—products that break current norms and are different from others—and (b) acknowledge that heavy investments into novel and visually groundbreaking packaging lend diminishing returns, particularly for general audiences: for the same level of quality a traditional (vs. creative) packaging yields more advantages. Cicer arietinum or chickpea is an important and highly nutritious pulse, a source of complex carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and minerals, considered non-allergenic, and non-GMO crop. Processing technologies play an important role in modifying some chickpea properties and thus increasing its nutritional and health benefits. Herein is summarized and compared the available data on nutritional and functional aspects caused by thermal, nonthermal, and combinations of treatments for chickpea processing. The study focuses on describing the processing conditions necessary to change chickpea matrices aiming to enhance compound bioavailability, reduce anti-nutritional factors and modify functional characteristics for industrial application in product development. Thermal and nonthermal treatments can modify nutrient composition and bioavailability in chickpea matrices. Thermal treatments, moist or dry, prevent microbial spoilage, increase product palatability and increase protein quality. Nonthermal treatments aim to shorten the processing time and use less energy and water sources. Compared to thermal treatments, they usually preserve organoleptic attributes and bioactive compounds in chickpea matrices. Some treatment combinations can increase the efficacy of single treatments. Combined treatments increase antioxidant concentration, protein digestibility and available starch contents. Finally, despite differences among their effects, single and combined treatments can improve the nutritional and physicochemical properties of chickpea matrices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper aims to investigate sustainability-led innovation, focusing on the interplay between product and process innovation for sustainability goals and the underlying supplier–customer relationships. Thus, the paper delves into sustainability-led innovation and how it affects supplier–customer relationships, and vice versa, thus providing a twofold perspective. Design/methodology/approach: The textile industry is the empirical context of this study, which is exploratory research based on in-depth, semi-structured interviews with entrepreneurs, managers and experts in the textile industry. Findings: In the textile industry, sustainability-led product innovation concerns mainly product durability and performance, product recyclability and the use of waste for new product development. Process innovation deals with circular economy, traceability and water and chemical use minimization. The paper also shows how sustainability-led innovation is implemented in more technical terms and regarding supplier–customer relationships. Originality/value: The paper adopts an original perspective on how processes take place in the relationships between suppliers and customers, where there is no dominance of one actor, but innovation emerges from interdependence and interaction. Such perspective allows to provide an in-depth analysis of the supplier–customer relationships and underlying dynamics that affect sustainability-led innovation; moreover, the authors study how such innovation impacts supplier–customer relationships and the underlying relational dynamics. The carrot is a root vegetable well-known for its high nutritional content and health advantages. It is well known for its strong antioxidant content, particularly carotenoids, which have been linked to cancer-fighting effects. Carotenoids, polyphenols, and vitamins in carrots have been demonstrated to have anticarcinogenic, antioxidant, and immune-boosting qualities, lending credence to the long-held concept that carrots are good for eye health. Numerous in-vivo and in-vitro research have revealed carrots' numerous health benefits, including cholesterol-lowering, anti-diabetic, anti-hypertensive, renoprotective, hepatoprotective, and facilitate the excretion of fats and bile by the liver. Carrot seed extracts have also been shown to have antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, and hepatoprotective effects. Carrot pomace, which contains about 50% -carotene, has been recognized as a valuable byproduct that can be economically helpful for boosting culinary products such as biscuits, bread, and cakes, as well as preparing various functional goods. Carrot pomace powder is used to create bread and extruded items, demonstrating this waste's variety and prospective applications. This comprehensive review focuses on the nutritional composition, phytonutrients, functional properties, product development, and utilization of carrots and their byproducts. Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) plays an important role in global agriculture, particularly in commercializing the cashew kernel. Nevertheless, kernel extraction poses a challenge due to the nut variable shape and size. Characterizing the properties of the cashew nut becomes a pivotal input for the advancement of processes and machinery. This work presents a comprehensive characterization of raw and steamed cashew nuts from Puerto Carreño, Colombia, with focus on morphological, physical, and mechanical properties. Cashew nut samples from different farms in the region were collected. Morphological properties, including size and shape, were analyzed by measuring length, width, and thickness for 100 nuts from each supplier, both in their raw state and after steaming. Geometric diameter and sphericity were calculated, and qualitative shape characterization was performed. Physical properties, such as mass, bulk density, true density, and moisture content, were also measured. Angle of repose and coefficient of friction were determined to assess flow and frictional behavior. Additionally, compressive mechanical properties were evaluated through uniaxial compression testing along three orientations. The findings indicated significant differences in morphological and mechanical properties between raw and steamed cashew nuts. Conversely, the results demonstrated that cashew nuts from Vichada region exhibit a noteworthy degree of dispersion and larger dimensions than those from Asia and Africa, comparable to those from Brazil. The findings guide machinery design in the cashew industry and offer insights into the physical, morphological, and mechanical properties of cashew nuts in Puerto Carreño, contributing to understanding and enabling quality assessment, processing optimization, and product development. Rapid changes in customer needs (CNs) and technology force businesses to develop new products to compete. Functional requirements (FRs) and non-functional requirements (NFRs) are created when CNs are correctly interpreted. FRs specify what the product must do, whereas NFRs specify how a system must behave. The study presents a comprehensive framework that helps product developers accurately and quickly extract the essential NFRs. This is because there is still no agreement in the requirements engineering community regarding which NFRs should be elicited for developing a system and how they should be applied and documented. Moreover, the majority of research in this area has either concentrated more on the field of software development or given more attention to applying FRs and less attention to NFRs. The presented framework applies the integrated approaches of QFD, DSM, and hesitant fuzzy sets (HFS). Design for eXcellence is also used to ensure that system quality attributes, such as NFRs, are considered during the development process. The framework was used to develop a solar power system, and the results indicated that the primary NFRs essential for system development are availability, reliability, maintainability, modularity, flexibility, and extensibility. The need for consistency in analytical method development reinforces the dependence of pharmaceutical product development and manufacturing on robust analytical data. The Analytical Quality by Design (AQbD), akin to the product Quality by Design (QbD) endows a high degree of confidence to the method quality developed. AQbD involves the definition of the analytical target profile as starting point, followed by the identification of critical method variables and critical analytical attributes, supported on risk assessment and design of experiment tools for the establishment of a method operable design region and control strategy of the method. This systematic approach moves away from reactive troubleshooting to proactive failure reduction. The objective of this review is to highlight the elements of the AQbD framework and provide an overview of their implementation status in various analytical methods used in the pharmaceutical field. These methodologies include but are not limited to, high-performance liquid chromatography, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, capillary electrophoresis, supercritical fluid chromatography, and high-performance thin-layer chromatography. Finally, a critical appraisal is provided to highlight how regulators have encouraged AQbD principles application to boost the prevention of method failures and a better understanding of the method operable design region (MODR) and control strategy, ultimately resulting in cost-effectiveness and regulatory flexibility. Objectives: This paper aims to develop and validate a taxonomy for the assessment of the subjective experience of curly hair manageability. It represents the latter of two iterative stages of a mixed‐method design interdisciplinary project. Methods: The qualitative stage of the study incorporated thematic analysis of 14 interview transcripts generated using a video‐ethnographic method (SEBE). A survey‐based instrument assessing different elements of the construct of hair manageability designed during the first stage of this project was further developed following consultations with experts with extensive experience in hair research, product development, testing and trichology. The instrument was tested online with 506 female participants self‐reporting natural curly hair, types 3A and higher according to the Andre Walker Curl Classification. Results: The initial construct of four groups of hair goals received positive content validity from the experts. High scale reliability was achieved for the aesthetic, haptic and emotive goals' scales as well as for hair esteem (Cronbach's alpha >0.75). Curl type was the only personal hair attribute that was correlated with hair goals and perceptions. From the demographic and lifestyle data, only age was correlated with goals and willingness to try new products. Common hair practices and product usage were also correlated with hair curl and goals. Conclusion: The appropriateness of the instrument for measuring the strength of different hair goals and perceptions relevant to hair curvature degree and hair esteem has been validated. The instrument will support the development and testing of products better aligned with the manageability needs of very curly and textured hair. Usually found bound to other complex molecules (e.g., lignin, hemicellulose), phenolic compounds (PC) are widely present in agro-industrial by-products, and their extraction is challenging. In recent times, research is starting to highlight the bioactive roles played by bound phenolics (BPC) in human health. This review aims at providing a critical update on recent advances in green techniques for the recovery of BPC, focusing on enzymatic-assisted (EAE) and fermentation-assisted extraction (FAE) as well as in the combination of technologies, showing variable yield and features. The present review also summarizes the most recent biological activities attributed to BPC extracts until now. The higher antioxidant activity of BPC—compared to FPC—coupled with their affordable by-product source make them medicinally potent and economically viable, promoting their integral upcycling and generating new revenue streams, business, and employment opportunities. In addition, EAE and FAE can have a biotransformative effect on the PC itself or its moiety, leading to improved extraction outcomes. Moreover, recent research on BPC extracts has reported promising anti-cancer and anti-diabetic activity. Yet further research is needed to elucidate their biological mechanisms and exploit the true potential of their applications in terms of new food products or ingredient development for human consumption. This paper investigates the coevolution between the development of British constitutional rights and the status of social and minority groups in planning London since its first post-WWII comprehensive plan. The study employed a historical document analysis by scrutinizing major London urban plans, pertinent British legislation, and constitutional rights enactments to uncover the evolution of urban planning amid a changing rights-based constitutional landscape. The study concludes that the status of social and minority groups within London's urban planning is not solely a product of planning approaches but is significantly shaped by the prevailing political and constitutional frameworks regarding minority rights. This paper aims to determine the distribution of light intensity values in a room at a certain time using a Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) sensor by comparing the light intensity and sensitivity of the LDR in conditions of changing dark to light in the room. The distribution of light intensity is measured using a light sensor assisted by Arduino application, the results of the average light intensity value when changing from dark to light conditions will automate the lights to turn on and off. Thus, it is hoped that it can save electricity. This experiment was integrated with the engineering design process through the following stages: 1) Identification of the problem, 2) Discussion of problemsolving, 3) Designing, 4) Creating, redesigning, and evaluation tests, and 5) Sharing solutions. Indoor light intensity measurements were carried out for 7 days, from 00.00, to once every 3 hours the distribution of the light intensity values read was checked. The research results provide new findings that the average distribution of light when changing from dark to light at 05.36 - 05.37 indoors shows a value of 105-135 lx, while from light to dark at 18.07 - 18.08 shows a value of 75 - 88 lux. Previous work has found that a small number of export superstars contribute disproportionally to the economy's overall exports. Differently from export superstars, this study is the first to define high growth exporters (HGXs) (that are not export superstars) as a new firm category. We provide their economic importance and depict their micro-level anatomy. By tracking HGXs in Croatia for over a quarter of a century, 44 out of 100 export superstars in 2019 were previously HGXs. HGXs represent only 0.5% of all firms and 18% of high growth firms (HGFs) in the economy, but are responsible for about 25% of new exports and 5% of new jobs. During their growth episode, HGXs hire more employees from technology intensive industries with previous experience in exporting. They often hire on a single year work contract, and more frequently send new employees to work abroad. HGX also increase their presence in more advanced markets, increase the number of new export products and decrease their reliance on the largest product or largest export market. Consequently, the ability of managers and engineers to harness data for operational management and informed decision-making is curtailed. The rapid advancements in technology have revolutionized various aspects of product development, manufacturing, operations, and end-of-life treatment. One such transformative concept, the digital thread, has emerged as an important paradigm. It orchestrates the integration of information and data along the entire product lifecycle, spanning from initial design and engineering through production, maintenance, use, and eventual end of life. While the digital thread has garnered increasing attention within both the research community and industrial enterprises, there remains a notable lack of standardization concerning its utilization and applications. This comprehensive literature review aims to explore the role of the digital thread in manufacturing within the context of the product lifecycle. As a result, this review synthesizes insights into the technologies, roles, and functions of the digital thread throughout the product lifecycle. Furthermore, it proposes a structured framework designed to impart a standardized perspective of the digital thread's relevance within the manufacturing product lifecycle. The priority review voucher was established to incentivize research and development of treatments for traditionally underfunded diseases and was extended to medical countermeasures from 2016 to 2023, despite limited evidence of an association between the voucher program and increased product development. To determine whether the voucher program has incentivized initiation of new medical countermeasures in clinical trials, we created three cohorts of material threats: (i) COVID‐19, (ii) opioid pharmaceutical‐based agents, and (iii) all others. Using the Citeline Trialtrove database, we determined the number of medical countermeasures initiated in clinical trials from 2009–2016 and 2017–2023. Eligibility of COVID‐19 products for the voucher was confirmed with the issuance of a voucher for remdesivir in October 2020, so we compared January 2020–October 2020 to November 2020–July 2023. We fit two Poisson models—before and after voucher creation—within each cohort. Among COVID‐19 medical countermeasures, there was a decrease in the proportion of drugs initiated before (4.5%; 95% CI, 1.0 to 8.3%) vs. after voucher eligibility (−5.1%; 95% CI, −6.1 to −4.0%) (P = 0.01). Among opioid pharmaceutical‐based agents medical countermeasures, the rate of new drugs initiated did not change from 2009–2016 (8.1%, 95% CI, −4.4 to 22.6%) to 2017–2023 (5.6%; 95% CI, −3.2 to 15.2%) (P = 0.82). Among all other medical countermeasures, the rate of new drugs initiated also did not change from 2009–2016 (6.6%; 95% CI, −5.6 to 20.8%) to 2017–2023 (−14.8%; 95% CI, −29.2 to 2.0%) (P = 0.15). Purpose: New product development (NPD) projects are strategically important for firms' operations but suffer from high failure rates. Leadership is a key factor for project success. However, in contrast to positive project leadership, project managers' knowledge hiding has received little attention. Drawing on the input-mediator-output (IMO) framework and model of work team resilience, we explored the effect of project managers' destructive knowledge hiding (i.e. evasive hiding and playing dumb) on project team performance (i.e. efficiency and effectiveness) and the serial indirect effect through team psychological safety and transactive memory systems. Design/methodology/approach: We conducted a time-lagged multiple-sourcing investigation of Chinese high-tech firms and tested the hypotheses using data collected from 105 NPD project teams. Findings: Our findings demonstrated that project managers' knowledge hiding negatively affects NPD project team performance and indirectly negatively affects transactive memory systems through team psychological safety. Moreover, project managers' knowledge hiding exerts a negative indirect effect on team performance through team psychological safety and transactive memory systems in serial. Originality/value: This study contributes to the literature on operations management (OM) by broadening our understanding of the connection between project managers' destructive knowledge hiding and the failure of NPD projects. Purpose: This paper investigates how various emergent theoretical perspectives in entrepreneurship research, representing diverse decision-making logics, influence firm growth and evolution. It explores the interaction among decision-making logics, including experimentation, affordable loss, flexibility and pre-commitment as components of effectuation, alongside causation and bricolage and their synergistic effects on firm growth. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a multi-phase, discovery-oriented approach. Initially, insights from existing literature on decision-making logic were combined with in-depth interviews with 10 Iranian entrepreneurs within the food sector. This phase used alternative template research to evaluate the principles of effectuation, causation and bricolage within case study data depicting firm growth. Subsequently, a self-administered survey was developed based on these insights and distributed to 205 entrepreneurs in Iran. The survey data was analysed using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to identify key factors and pathways influencing firm growth. Findings: Using a discovery-oriented approach, this study formulates a comprehensive framework detailing decision-making logics that influence firm growth. Through fsQCA, 12 distinct paths are identified, highlighting the complex interplay of causation, effectuation and bricolage in high-growth firms within the food sector. Research limitations/implications: This study has limitations. FsQCA identifies only logically sufficient combinations, suggesting potential for exploring alternative pathways in future research. Given COVID-19's impact on the food sector, examining decision-making logic across diverse contexts and industries is advisable. Additionally, exploring how bricolage, causation and effectuation affect outcomes like new product development and innovation is essential in a growth-focused context. It is also important to consider environmental and organizational factors influencing growth. While past research has shown that championing plays a key role in sheltering and advancing novel ideas towards implementation, relatively little is known about how adversity and failure are dealt with through championing behaviour. The current embedded case study draws from 43 interviews in a large industrial technology organization, examining new product and service development idea pathways. We found four types of championing responses in the 61 instances where initial idea advancement efforts did not bear fruit: lateral shifts, reworking, temporal shifts and moaning. In each of these, the idea was seen as valuable by the developer, but the attribution of initial failure and perceptions of effort‐to‐performance and performance‐to‐outcome expectancies varied in distinct combinations of conforming and nonconforming types of championing with varying intensity. Taken together, the results contribute towards understanding the multidimensional nature and temporal dynamics of championing in persisting under adversity by illuminating factors that contribute to championing response type decisions and opportunities to better support idea development efforts in organizations. Our paper explores the integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into organizations' innovation and new product development processes, focusing on when and how to trust AI-generated outcomes in this context. We propose a framework to assess the level of trust required based on task-specific needs and the distinction between general and expert AI models. While inaccuracies in GenAI outputs can foster creativity during ideation, higher accuracy, and trust are essential for tasks requiring domain-specific expertise. Product development durations are being drastically reduced, thanks, amongst other reasons, to the use of design automation techniques. But this trend is observed in large companies and to a much lesser extent in SMEs. This article seeks to research the possibility of finding suitable automation technologies for this type of enterprises. Automating the development of commercial offers in SMEs can be a good starting point to the change in this trend. Focusing on this objective, the necessary requirements that a tool of this type must have are established. Different models of assistants have been developed and analysed on different products, deducing from their results an ideal system architecture and methodology. This solution is based on design tables, a technology that links data from a spreadsheet, implements the company’s design process, with parameters of a three-dimensional CAD model, which represents the solution. The rest of the documents that constitute the commercial offer and the possibility of linking them with verification tools are derived from this design core. The main conclusion is the current viability of this method, anticipating the improvement of many aspects, mainly highlighting the link with the rest of the life cycle phases through interoperability tools. The concept of sustainable development is driving shell biorefineries to develop a cost-effective and environmentally benign approach to transform chitin into high-value products. This study describes a green, simple, and flexible shell biorefinery process for producing two kinds of nanochitins (NCh), chitin solid residues (ChSRs) and chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs), by using p-toluenesulfonic acid-assisted hydrothermal treatment. The ChSR is a bundled nanocrystal with a long length ranging from 100 nm to 450 nm and a width ranging from 10 nm to 30 nm. It has an excellent interfacial behavior between the water and oil phases due to its amphiphilic nature; thus, a foodstuff-related emulsion has been successfully fabricated from soybean oil and a ChSR suspension without the addition of any synthetic surfactants. The further hydrolysed ChNC with a length and width range of 25–225 nm and 15–30 nm, respectively, and a high zeta potential of 41 mV exists as an individual nanocrystal. Owing to the abundance of positively charged groups distributed on its surface, ChNC enables self-assembly to a highly ordered hierarchical structure. Hence, ChNCs show promising results in fabricating large-area photonic films, e.g. for application in bright and vivid automobile painting. Altogether, we provide a novel approach to produce NCh materials from crustacean shell waste and bridge the gap from process engineering to high-value product development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plant-based protein foods are important products for sustainability, health, and ecosystem. Although vegans/vegetarians prefer these products, they have not received a widespread popularity due to significant differences in sensory properties and consumer experience compared to animal-based foods. Hence, sensory evaluation is the key in product development of these products. In this review, sensory techniques used for dairy, meat, egg, fish, and seafood analogs were analysed. Most studies involved affective and descriptive methods, and comparison of the sensory properties to see the gaps between plant-based and animal-based products. Parameters forming repetitive pattern in all studies are texture, appearance, aroma, flavor, and odor. Number of reported studies conducted on dairy and meat substitutes is higher than other categories. Egg analog sensory tests are developing especially with different applications like mayonnaise. However, there is a lack in fish and seafood substitute area. For now, the central issue in plant-based food development is to mimic flavor and textural properties. Therefore, there is a need in sensory research on these complex plant-based protein analogs with a range of different quality attributes to set the industrial standards, the research should be conducted in a variety of applications speeding up to launch alternatives for the interested consumers. The core reason for the nutritional richness and special flavour composition of traditional Chinese fermented soybean products lies in the diversity of microbial structures and their metabolites, which include a variety of potential probiotics. However, relatively little mainstream research has been conducted on these microorganisms, especially in regions with unrelated product dietary habits, limiting the high-value utilisation of the characteristic microbial resources. In order to enhance the efficient use and functional exploitation of microbial resources in Chinese traditional fermented soybean products, this paper investigated and reviewed a variety of products such as soybean paste, soy sauce, douchi, sufu, and fermented soybean milk, and carried out a detailed analysis of the sources, flavour characteristics, and potential functionality of microorganisms therein, which elucidated that the microorganisms in Chinese traditional fermented soybean products have the potential to be used as functional probiotics, with a view to contributing to the probiotic resources exploitation, novel food development, and the development of new food products, as well as the development of new foods. The texture of plant‐based meat alternatives is a sensory attribute that holds a central value in consumer acceptability. The texture dimensions and drivers of liking for plant‐based mince, a popular product within plant‐based meats, are not yet fully established and literature in this area is limited. Consequently, the successful development and positioning of such products in the market next to traditional proteins is compromised, and improved product development guidelines are needed for the industry. This review aims to inform product development of what is currently known about plant‐based mince texture and where the research gaps are, particularly with respect to sensory dimensions and drivers of liking, by reviewing the present landscape of relevant sensory literature. Potential texture sensory dimensions for plant‐based mince, based on limited studies and seemingly aligning with conventional mince, are posited as juiciness, tenderness, firmness, and/or softness with a key driver of liking being juiciness, but this requires further validation utilizing robust sensory studies. A significant need exists to expand on the currently known texture dimensions and drivers alongside new ways that texture can be improved upon to more closely align to, or exceed, consumer expectations. Once this has been achieved, a robust sensory framework for developing plant‐based mince products can be used to better position plant‐based mince to effectively compete with traditional mince, and not merely cannibalize upon other brands, in the current market. Additive manufacturing (AM) is a wide set of technologies that can be used for many different scopes. AM is now a well-integrated prototyping and development tool in most industrial endeavours, while proper end-product manufacturing has only seen very specific niche successes. Given the complexity of AM's matrix, which is full of discontinuities and non-trivial intercorrelations that play a relevant role in product design and development, it should not come as a surprise that not many end-product applications have succeeded in making use of it. This paper argues that understanding AM's complex matrix and correctly identifying suitable production niches for it are key elements of this issue, a topic for which existing literature and tools are scarce. The analysis of AM's status quo for end-product manufacturing and the review of existing approaches to integrate these technologies with product development are the basis used in this paper to propose a suitability assessment tool to fill this knowledge gap. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the mechanisms of absorptive capacity (ACAP) in the specific context of digital product development teams. More precisely, it explores the process of internalizing and utilizing external knowledge from sources outside the team to promote the development of innovative ambidexterity. Design/methodology/approach: The study employs the ACAP framework and directs specific attention to the concept of knowledge assimilation, encompassing comprehension, documentation and dissemination. Seventy-five employees of one of Indonesia's largest commercial banks were surveyed about two initiatives they participated in. To this end, 12 research hypotheses are formulated, tested and analyzed using structural equation modeling. Findings: Knowledge comprehension, documentation and dissemination are found to mediate between knowledge acquisition and knowledge exploitation. At the same time, the relationship between knowledge acquisition and knowledge transformation is mediated by knowledge comprehension and dissemination, but not documentation. The authors also found that knowledge transformation positively mediates between knowledge comprehension and dissemination on the one hand and ambidexterity on the other hand. Importantly, knowledge exploitation negatively mediates between knowledge comprehension and documentation on the one hand and ambidexterity on the other hand. Originality/value: This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by offering nuanced insights into the interplay of knowledge assimilation processes within ACAP, particularly in the context of digital product development. Hence, the review was carried out with focus on the sources, relevance, processing techniques and applications of tricalcium phosphate based biomaterials in modern day healthcare delivery. The article explores the responsibilities of a food product developer, the relevance of this expertise within the science of food and its contributions to the global food system. Topics discussed include food product development initiatives of companies, reasons for developing food consumer packaged foods, stages of new food product development, and challenges of food product development such as food safety, ingredient sourcing, costs, pricing and sustainable production and practices.

Objective To identify the barriers preventing manufacturers of similar biotherapeutic human insulin from submitting their products to the World Health Organization (WHO) for prequalification. Methods We used a self-administered questionnaire to collect data from companies producing similar biotherapeutic human insulin. We included questions about the insulin products manufactured, knowledge of WHO prequalification requirements, export of the products and compliance with good manufacturing practices. Companies had the possibility to provide additional relevant information. We sent the questionnaire to 20 manufacturers in total. We evaluated responses and organized the data into themes. Results We had a response rate of 55% (11/20 companies). Five broad themes emerged: (i) manufacturers and products; (ii) expressions of interest awareness and participation; (iii) need for technical assistance and training; (iv) market and supply chain challenges; and (v) approval for good manufacturing practices. The most important reasons for manufacturers' lack of response to WHO's expression-of-interest invitation were absence of a mechanism to guarantee return on investment, and perceived complexity of prequalification requirements for insulin- similar biotherapeutic products. Conclusion To encourage greater participation in the WHO prequalification programme, international procurement agencies associated with the programme should consider establishing a platform to enter into advance purchasing agreements with manufacturers. In addition, WHO's Local Production and Assistance Unit should provide companies with ongoing technical assistance on the development of their human insulin products and improvement of their production facilities to comply with the WHO requirements for good manufacturing practices. Recommendations for the design of sandwich constructions Parallel to the revision and new publication of the product standard for sandwich panels EN 14509, EN 1993‐7 for the design and construction of sandwich panels will soon be published as part of the Eurocode 3 series of standards. The innovations in this standard compared to Annex E – Design method of DIN EN 14509:2013‐12 are presented and explained below using calculation examples.
