Butterflies, like many insects, use gustatory and olfactory cues innately to assess the suitability of an oviposition site and are able to associate colours and leaf shapes with an oviposition reward. Studies on other insects have demonstrated that the quality of the reward is a crucial factor in forming associative memory. We set out to investigate whether the large cabbage white Pieris brassicae (Linnaeus) has the ability to associate an oviposition experience with a neutral olfactory cue. In addition, we tested whether the strength of this association is dependent on the gustatory response to the glucosinolate sinigrin, which is a known oviposition stimulus for P. brassicae. Female butterflies were able to associate a neutral odour with an oviposition experience after a single oviposition experience, both in a greenhouse and in a semi-natural outdoor setting. Moreover, butterflies performed best when trained with concentrations of sinigrin that showed the strongest response by specific gustatory neurons on the forelegs. Our study provides novel insight into the role of both gustatory and olfactory cues during oviposition learning in lepidopterans and contributes to a better understanding of how these insects might be able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. The spread of invasive species often follows a jump-dispersal pattern. While jumps are typically fostered by humans, local dispersal can occur due to the specific traits of a species, which are often poorly understood. This holds true for small hive beetles (Aethina tumida), which are parasites of social bee colonies native to sub-Saharan Africa. They have become a widespread invasive species. In 2017, a mark-release-recapture experiment was conducted in six replicates (A–F) using laboratory reared, dye-fed adults (N = 15,690). Honey bee colonies were used to attract flying small hive beetles at fixed spatial intervals from a central release point. Small hive beetles were recaptured (N = 770) at a maximum distance of 3.2 km after 24 h and 12 km after 1 week. Most small hive beetles were collected closest to the release point at 0 m (76%, replicate A) and 50 m (52%, replicates B to F). Temperature and wind deviation had significant effects on dispersal, with more small hive beetles being recaptured when temperatures were high (GLMM: slope = 0.99, SE = 0.17, Z = 5.72, P < 0.001) and confirming the role of wind for odour modulated dispersal of flying insects (GLMM: slope = − 0.39, SE = 0.14, Z = − 2.90, P = 0.004). Our findings show that the small hive beetles is capable of long-distance flights, and highlights the need to understand species specific traits to be considered for monitoring and mitigation efforts regarding invasive alien species. Frass, a byproduct of insect rearing, has become popular for its potential use in sustainable agriculture. The rapid growth of insect production results in an increased frass output. This study examined the effects of frass as soil amendment on plant growth and resistance to insect herbivory. In greenhouse experiments, Brassica rapa L. (Brassicaceae), was grown in unamended soil (NoFrass; control) or soil amended with frass (2 g kg−1) from larvae of black soldier fly (BSFF), Hermetia illucens L. (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), or yellow mealworm (MWF), Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). Frass was applied as raw, incubated, or composted frass before seed germination. Plant growth and performance were measured of larvae of root‐feeding Delia radicum L. (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) and shoot‐feeding Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). Initially, raw BSFF and MWF reduced the growth of B. rapa and resulted in a smaller leaf area than NoFrass. However, over time, a notable trend emerged. Whereas the difference in leaf area between MWF and NoFrass disappeared, BSFF consistently resulted in a smaller leaf area than MWF and NoFrass. Raw BSFF reduced D. radicum larval survival and pupal biomass and larval survival of P. xylostella. In contrast, raw MWF increased larval survival and biomass of D. radicum and the survival of P. xylostella larvae. Interestingly, incubation of frass in the soil for 16 days before seed germination removed plant growth inhibition and increased plant leaf area, especially for MWF compared to NoFrass. In addition, composting MWF increased leaf growth. Therefore, frass may be used as a sustainable and natural alternative to conventional organic fertilisers, promoting plant growth and enhancing resistance to herbivory. While the response of Arabidopsis thaliana to drought, herbivory or fungal infection has been well‐examined, the consequences of exposure to a series of such (a)biotic stresses are not well studied. This work reports on the genetic mechanisms underlying the Arabidopsis response to single osmotic stress, and to combinatorial stress, either fungal infection using Botrytis cinerea or herbivory using Pieris rapae caterpillars followed by an osmotic stress treatment. Several small‐effect genetic loci associated with rosette dry weight (DW), rosette water content (WC), and the projected rosette leaf area in response to combinatorial stress were mapped using univariate and multi‐environment genome‐wide association approaches. A single‐nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) associated with DROUGHT‐INDUCED 19 (DI19) was identified by both approaches, supporting its potential involvement in the response to combinatorial stress. Several SNPs were found to be in linkage disequilibrium with known stress‐responsive genes such as PEROXIDASE 34 (PRX34), BASIC LEUCINE ZIPPER 25 (bZIP25), RESISTANCE METHYLATED GENE 1 (RMG1) and WHITE RUST RESISTANCE 4 (WRR4). An antagonistic effect between biotic and osmotic stress was found for prx34 and arf4 mutants, which suggests PRX34 and ARF4 play an important role in the response to the combinatorial stress. Plants can detect neighbouring plants through a reduction in the ratio between red and far‐red light (R:FR). This provides a signal of plant–plant competition and induces rapid plant growth while inhibiting defence against biotic stress, two interlinked responses designated as the shade avoidance syndrome (SAS). Consequently, the SAS can influence plant–herbivore interactions that could cascade to higher trophic levels. However, little is known about how the expression of the SAS can influence tritrophic interactions. We investigated whether changes in R:FR affect the emission of herbivore‐induced plant volatiles (HIPVs), and whether these changes influence the attraction of the zoophytophagous predator Macrolophus pygmaeus. We also studied how the expression of the SAS and subsequent inhibition of plant defences affects the reproduction of M. pygmaeus in both the presence and absence of the greenhouse whitefly (WF) (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) as arthropod prey. The results show that changes in R:FR have little effect on HIPV emissions and predator attraction. However, a reduction in R:FR leads to increased reproduction of both the predator and the WFs. We discuss that shade avoidance responses can increase the population development of M. pygmaeus through a combination of reduced plant defences and increased herbivore densities. Summary statement: Changes in red and far‐red light (FR) have little influence on the emission of volatiles by tomatoes and also do not influence the attraction of the predatory bug Macrolophus pygmaeus. However, FR light does increase M. pygmaeus reproduction on tomatoes, both in the absence and presence of whiteflies (WFs) as arthropod prey. Contamination of food products with mycotoxins such as aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ) poses a severe risk to human health. Larvae of the black soldier fly (BSFL), Hermetia illucens (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), can successfully metabolize AFB 1 without any negative consequences on their survival or growth. Organic waste streams contaminated with mycotoxins can be upcycled into protein-rich BSFL as an alternative feed for livestock and the left-over feed residue into nutrient-rich crop fertilizers. However, the underlying mechanisms that allow BSFL to metabolize AFB 1 are unknown. In this study, five-day-old BSFL were fed with either a control or an AFB 1 -spiked (20 μg/kg) diet to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Larval samples were collected at three timepoints (6 h, 24 h and 72 h) and subjected to RNA-Seq analysis to determine gene expression patterns. Provision of an AFB 1 -spiked diet resulted in an up-regulation of 357 and a down-regulation of 929 unique genes. Upregulated genes include multiple genes involved in AFB 1 metabolism in other (insect) species. Downregulated genes were generally involved in the insects' growth, development, and immunity. BSFL possesses a diverse genetic arsenal that encodes for enzymes capable of metabolizing AFB 1 without trade-offs on larval survival. Black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) receive growing interest as a potential alternative animal feed source. These insects may be exposed to insecticide residues in the rearing substrate. This study aimed to investigate the effects of six different pyrethroid and organophosphate insecticides on this insect species' performance. The toxicity of two "model" substances for each of these classes (cypermethrin; pirimiphos-methyl) was quantified, with and without the synergist piperonyl butoxide (PBO). Critical effect doses corresponding to 10% yield (CED10) for cypermethrin (0.4 mg/kg) and pirimiphos-methyl (4.8 mg/kg) were determined. The addition of PBO to cypermethrin enhanced its relative potency with a factor 2.6. These data were compared against the relative toxicity of two analogue substances in each class (permethrin, deltamethrin; chlorpyrifos-methyl, malathion). Results suggest that exposure to concentrations complying with legal limits can cause significant reductions in yield. Exposure to multiple substances at lower concentrations resulted in negative additive and synergistic effects. Of the tested substances, deltamethrin was most toxic, causing 94% yield at 0.5 mg/kg. Analytical results suggested that transfer of tested substances to the larval biomass was substance- and concentration-specific, but appeared to be correlated to reduced yields and the presence of PBO. Transfer of organophosphates was overall low (<2%), but ranged from 8% to 75% for pyrethroids. Due to very low limits in insect biomass (∼0.01 mg/kg), high transfer may result in noncompliance. It is recommended that rearing companies implement lower contractual thresholds, and that policymakers consider adjusting legally allowed maximum residue levels in insect feed., (© 2023 The Authors.
