The hydrogen storage performance of Pd-doped oxidized activated carbon (Pd/AC-ox) with various oxygen contents or functional groups was investigated. The surface chemistry of the Pd/AC-ox sample was modified by treatment with hydrogen gas. Temperature-programmed desorption was performed to characterize the oxygen functional groups in each sample. In this study, low- and high-pressure hydrogen adsorption isotherm experiments were conducted using a static volumetric measurement at room temperature (RT) and pressures of up to 8 MPa. The results showed that increasing the oxygen content and functional groups on the surface of the Pd/AC-ox significantly improved the reversible RT hydrogen storage capacity due to the spillover effect. The hydrogen spillover enhancement factors at 0.12 MPa were greater than 100% for all samples. The hydrogen uptake of Pd/AC-ox1 at RT and 8 MPa with an oxygen content of 8.94 wt.% was 0.37 wt.%, which was 48% greater than that of Pd-free AC-ox (0.25 wt.%). In addition, the hydrogen uptake of Pd/AC-ox3 with lower oxygen contents demonstrates that the hydrogen spillover enhancement gradually disappears when the pressure is increased to more than 2 MPa (i.e., a transition from spillover to physisorption). The surface diffusion, or reversible adsorption, of the spiltover H atoms, which is enhanced by oxygen functional groups, was affected by a threshold amount of oxygen groups (such as hydroxyl groups). Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) caused by Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) has a high tendency among illicit drug abusers. Recently, it is reported that abuse of fentanyl, a potent synthetic μ receptor–stimulating opioid, is an independent risk factor for HIV-1 infection. However, the mechanism of action in augmenting HIV-1 infection still remains elusive. In this study, we found that fentanyl enhanced infection of HIV-1 in MT2 cells, primary macrophages and Jurkat C11 cells. Fentanyl up-regulated CXCR4 and CCR5 receptor expression, which facilitated the entry of virion into host cells. In addition, it down-regulated interferon-β (IFN-β) and interferon-stimulated genes (APOBEC3F, APOBEC3G and MxB) expression in MT2 cells. Our findings identify an essential role of fentanyl in the positive regulation of HIV-1 infection via the upregulation of co-receptors (CXCR4/CCR5) and downregulation of IFN-β and ISGs, and it may have an important role in HIV-1 immunopathogenesis. • Fentanyl enhances infection of HIV-1 in MT2, primary macrophages, Jurkat C11 cells. • Fentanyl promotes the expression of CXCR4 and CCR5 receptors. • Fentanyl inhibits interferon-β and interferon-stimulated genes expression. Abstract: Luminescent polyimide (PI)/europium nanofibers have been successfully prepared by electrospinning combined with an in situ sol–gel technique. The possible reaction mechanism of the simultaneous imidization of polyamide acid and gelation of europium phase was analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that chemical coupling and noncovalent interaction existed between the polymer and the europium which formed during the preparative process. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electronic spectroscopy (SEM) studies also indicated the successful incorporation of europium into PI matrix and various morphologies could be achieved by controlling the calcination temperature and the europium content. Nanofibers with necklace-like structures were obtained after calcination under high temperatures. These PI/europium nanofibers were further demonstrated to have strong fluorescence emission. The intensity ratio for the PI/europium nanofibers, labeled as (5D0 → 7F2)/(5D0 → 7F1), which is well known as the asymmetry parameter, was lower than that in pure Eu2O3 powder, indicating that there were highly symmetric coordination spheres around europium in the nanofibers. Ensuring that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is green and low-carbon is crucial to tackling climate change while simultaneously promoting a win-win outcome of BRI countries. In recent years, China has altered its BRI Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) portfolio by reducing investment in carbon-intensive sectors and increasing it in non-carbon-intensive sectors. Therefore, it is particularly important to assess the potential of these two types of sectors in attracting China's FDI, and to identify the major determinants of investment. In our study, the results of a stochastic frontier gravity model and inefficiency model on 2008–2017 data covering 132 countries, including 98 BRI countries, show that the potential for China's FDI in non-carbon-intensive sectors is higher than that in carbon-intensive sectors. Furthermore, the determinants of China's FDI in these two types of sectors are significantly different. The study's results can be used to inform China's investment policy, and render positive contributions to the green BRI based on location and sector information. • We analyze whether a sector's carbon intensity affects China's FDI in that sector. • We also identify the determinants that drive investment. • Stochastic frontier gravity model, inefficiency model are used on 132 countries' data. • Chinese FDI potential is more likely in non-carbon-intensive sectors. • Determinants of FDI differ for sectors with different levels of carbon intensity. Social pain, a multifaceted emotional response triggered by interpersonal rejection or criticism, profoundly impacts mental well-being and social interactions. While prior research has implicated the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (rVLPFC) in mitigating social pain, the precise neural mechanisms and downstream effects on subsequent social attitudes remain elusive. This study employed transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) integrated with fMRI recordings during a social pain task to elucidate these aspects. Eighty participants underwent either active TMS targeting the rVLPFC (n = 41) or control stimulation at the vertex (n = 39). Our results revealed that TMS-induced rVLPFC facilitation significantly reduced self-reported social pain, confirming the causal role of the rVLPFC in social pain relief. Functional connectivity analyses demonstrated enhanced interactions between the rVLPFC and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, emphasizing the collaborative engagement of prefrontal regions in emotion regulation. Significantly, we observed that negative social feedback led to negative social attitudes, whereas rVLPFC activation countered this detrimental effect, showcasing the potential of the rVLPFC as a protective buffer against adverse social interactions. Moreover, our study uncovered the impact role of the hippocampus in subsequent social attitudes, a relationship particularly pronounced during excitatory TMS over the rVLPFC. These findings offer promising avenues for improving mental health within the intricate dynamics of social interactions. By advancing our comprehension of the neural mechanisms underlying social pain relief, this research introduces novel intervention strategies for individuals grappling with social distress. Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is a primary cause of cardiovascular mortality; however, its mechanisms are unknown. Currently, no effective pharmacotherapy is available for CAVD. Aldo-keto reductase family 1 member B (Akr1B1) has been identified as a potential therapeutic target for valve interstitial cell calcification. Herein, we hypothesized that inhibition of Akr1B1 can attenuate aortic valve calcification. Normal and degenerative tricuspid calcific valves from human samples were analyzed by immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry. The results showed significant upregulation of Akr1B1 in CAVD leaflets. Akr1B1 inhibition attenuated calcification of aortic valve interstitial cells in osteogenic medium. In contrast, overexpression of Akr1B1 aggravated calcification in osteogenic medium. Mechanistically, using RNA sequencing (RNAseq), we revealed that Hippo-YAP signaling functions downstream of Akr1B1. Furthermore, we established that the protein level of the Hippo-YAP signaling effector active-YAP had a positive correlation with Akr1B1. Suppression of YAP reversed Akr1B1 overexpression-induced Runx2 upregulation. Moreover, YAP activated the Runx2 promoter through TEAD1 in a manner mediated by ChIP and luciferase reporter systems. Animal experiments showed that the Akr1B1 inhibitor epalrestat attenuated aortic valve calcification induced by a Western diet in LDLR−/− mice. This study demonstrates that inhibition of Akr1B1 can attenuate the degree of calcification both in vitro and in vivo. The Akr1B1 inhibitor epalrestat may be a potential treatment option for CAVD. A facile template-free Ostwald ripening method is developed for the preparation of the reduced graphene oxide supported splode-like NiCo 2 O 4 hollow microsphere (SNHM/rGO). The graphene oxide used in the reaction mixture is found to play a crucial role in the formation of the SNHM/rGO. It promotes the formation of the NiCo-glycerol microspheres suitable for the Ostwald ripening to form the reduced graphene oxide supported hollow NiCo-glycerol microspheres, which is important for the subsequent calcination to form the SNHM/rGO. The obtained SNHM/rGO shows a great promise as the anode for lithium-ion batteries and can deliver a stable reversible capacity of 1048.1 mA h g −1 at the current density of 100 mA g −1 . The performance of the SNHM/rGO is much higher than that of most NiCo 2 O 4 -based materials reported previously, strongly suggesting that the SNHM/rGO could be used as the anode for practical applications. This is well supported by the higher performance of the LiCoO 2 //SNHM−rGO full cell. The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to the specific structure of the SNHM/rGO, which comprises the splode-like hollow NiCo 2 O 4 microspheres with the reduced graphene oxide integrated. Abstract: Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active substrates of polyvinyl alcohol/gold–silver (PVA/Au–Ag) nanofibers were prepared using a simple approach involving electrospinning. The tunable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of gold–silver alloy (Au–Ag alloy) nanoparticles (NPs) was achieved by controlling the feed ratio between gold and silver precursors. A higher concentration of Au–Ag alloy NPs could be obtained than the conventional methods, using 1wt% of PVA as the stabilizer. The Au–Ag alloy structure was demonstrated by HRTEM and STEM-EDX. After the electrospinning, the Au–Ag alloy NPs were successfully embedded in PVA nanofibers, as shown in the SEM and TEM images. Raman spectra displayed an apparent enhancement in the signal of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA), pyridine, and thiophenol molecules pre-absorbed from their ethanol solution onto the PVA/Au–Ag nanofibers.
