Nitrogen is ubiquitous in both natural and laboratory-grown diamond, but the number and nature of the nitrogen-containing defects can have a profound effect on the diamond material and its properties. An ever-growing fraction of the supply of diamond appearing on the world market is now lab-grown. Here, we survey recent progress in two complementary diamond synthesis methodshigh pressure high temperature (HPHT) growth and chemical vapor deposition (CVD), how each is allowing ever more precise control of nitrogen incorporation in the resulting diamond, and how the diamond produced by either method can be further processed (e.g., by implantation or annealing) to achieve a particular outcome or property. The burgeoning availability of diamond samples grown under well-defined conditions has also enabled huge advances in the characterization and understanding of nitrogen-containing defects in diamondalone and in association with vacancies, hydrogen, and transition metal atoms. Among these, the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) defect in diamond is attracting particular current interest in account of the many new and exciting opportunities it offers for, for example, quantum technologies, nanoscale magnetometry, and biosensing. ZnO nanorods (NRs) and nanotubes (NTs) are synthesized by a hydrothermal method on Si substrates that was precoated by pulsed laser decomposition (PLD) with a thin ZnO film. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction analysis confirms that the NTs are ZnO single crystals and that their growth direction is along [0001], the c-axis.

Experimental and modeling studies of the gas-phase chemistry occurring in dilute, hot filament (HF) activated B2H6/H2 and B2H6/CH4/H2 gas mixtures are reported. Spatially resolved relative number densities of B (and H) atoms have been measured by resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization methods, as a function of process conditions (e.g. the HF material and its temperature, the B2H6/H2 mixing ratio, and the presence (or not) of added CH4). Three-dimensional modeling of the H/B chemistry prevailing in such HF activated gas mixtures using a simplified representation of the gas phase chemistry succeeds in reproducing all of the experimentally observed trends, and in illustrating the key role of the "H-shifting" reactions BHx + H ⇌ BHx-1 + H2 (x = 1−3) in enabling rapid interconversion between the various BHx (x = 0−3) species. CH4 addition, at partial pressures appropriate for growth of boron-doped diamond by chemical vapor deposition methods, leads to ∼30% reduction in the measured B atom signal near the HF. The modeling suggests that this is mainly due to concomitant H atom depletion near the HF, but it also allows us a first assessment of the possible contributions from B/C coupling reactions upon CH4 addition to HF activated B2H6/H2 gas mixtures. The photofragmentation of state-selected BrCl+ cations has been investigated by velocity-map ion-imaging methods. Detailed analyses of the 79Br+ fragment velocities lead to the most precise values yet reported for (i) the spin−orbit coupling constant for the X2Π state, A = −2070 ± 4 cm-1; (ii) the bond dissociation energies of both states of 79Br35Cl+, 25019 ± 4 cm-1 (X2Π3/2) and 22949 ± 2 cm-1 (X2Π1/2); and (iii) the adiabatic ionization thresholds for forming 79Br35Cl+ parent ions in their X2Π3/2 and X2Π1/2 states, 88292 ± 6 and 90362 ± 4 cm-1, respectively. H 2 S is being detected in the atmospheres of ever more interstellar bodies, and photolysis is an important mechanism by which it is processed. Here, we report H Rydberg atom time-of-flight measurements following the excitation of H 2 S molecules to selected rotational ( J KaKc ') levels of the 1 B 1 Rydberg state associated with the strong absorption feature at wavelengths of λ ∼ 129.1 nm. Analysis of the total kinetic energy release spectra derived from these data reveals that all levels predissociate to yield H atoms in conjunction with both SH(A) and SH(X) partners and that the primary SH(A)/SH(X) product branching ratio increases steeply with ⟨ J b 2 ⟩, the square of the rotational angular momentum about the b -inertial axis in the excited state. These products arise via competing homogeneous (vibronic) and heterogeneous (Coriolis-induced) predissociation pathways that involve coupling to dissociative potential energy surfaces (PES(s)) of, respectively, 1 A″ and 1 A' symmetries. The present data also show H + SH(A) product formation when exciting the J KaKc ' = 0 00 and 1 11 levels, for which ⟨ J b 2 ⟩ = 0 and Coriolis coupling to the 1 A' PES(s) is symmetry forbidden, implying the operation of another, hitherto unrecognized, route to forming H + SH(A) products following excitation of H 2 S at energies above ∼9 eV. These data can be expected to stimulate future ab initio molecular dynamic studies that test, refine, and define the currently inferred predissociation pathways available to photoexcited H 2 S molecules.

Identifying multiple rival reaction products and transient species formed during ultrafast photochemical reactions and determining their time-evolving relative populations are key steps toward understanding and predicting photochemical outcomes. Yet, most contemporary ultrafast studies struggle with clearly identifying and quantifying competing molecular structures/species among the emerging reaction products. Here, we show that mega-electronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction in combination with ab initio molecular dynamics calculations offer a powerful route to determining time-resolved populations of the various isomeric products formed after UV (266 nm) excitation of the five-membered heterocyclic molecule 2(5 H )-thiophenone. This strategy provides experimental validation of the predicted high (∼50%) yield of an episulfide isomer containing a strained three-membered ring within ∼1 ps of photoexcitation and highlights the rapidity of interconversion between the rival highly vibrationally excited photoproducts in their ground electronic state.

Ab initio molecular dynamics studies of CH 2 OO molecules following excitation to the minimum-energy geometry of the strongly absorbing S 2 ( 1 ππ*) state reveal a much richer range of behaviors than just the prompt O-O bond fission, with unity quantum yield and retention of overall planarity, identified in previous vertical excitation studies from the ground (S 0 ) state. Trajectories propagated for 100 fs from the minimum-energy region of the S 2 state show a high surface hopping (nonadiabatic coupling) probability between the near-degenerate S 2 and S 1 ( 1 nπ*) states at geometries close to the S 2 minimum, which enables population transfer to the optically dark S 1 state. Greater than 80% of the excited population undergoes O-O bond fission on the S 2 or S 1 potential energy surfaces (PESs) within the analysis period, mostly from nonplanar geometries wherein the CH 2 moiety is twisted relative to the COO plane. Trajectory analysis also reveals recurrences in the O-O stretch coordinate, consistent with the resonance structure observed at the red end of the parent S 2 -S 0 absorption spectrum, and a small propensity for out-of-plane motion after nonadiabatic coupling to the S 1 PES that enables access to a conical intersection between the S 1 and S 0 states and cyclization to dioxirane products.

Wavelength and spatially resolved imaging and 2D plasma chemical modeling methods have been used to study the emission from electronically excited C 2 radicals in microwave-activated dilute methane/hydrogen gas mixtures under processing conditions relevant to the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of diamond. Obvious differences in the spatial distributions of the much-studied C 2 (d 3 Π g -a 3 Π u ) Swan band emission and the little-studied, higher-energy C 2 (C 1 Π g -A 1 Π u ) emission are rationalized by invoking a chemiluminescent (CL) reactive source, most probably involving collisions between H atoms and C 2 H radicals, that acts in tandem with the widely recognized electron impact excitation source term. The CL source is relatively much more important for forming C 2 (d) state radicals and is deduced to account for >40% of C 2 (d) production in the hot plasma core under base operating conditions, which should encourage caution when estimating electron or gas temperatures from C 2 Swan band emission measurements. Studies at higher pressures ( p ≈ 400 Torr) offer new insights into the plasma constriction that hampers efforts to achieve higher diamond CVD rates by using higher processing pressures. Plasma constriction is proposed as being inevitable in regions where the local electron density ( n e ) exceeds some critical value ( n ec ) and electron-electron collisions enhance the rates of H 2 dissociation, H-atom excitation, and related associative ionization processes relative to those prevailing in the neighboring nonconstricted plasma region. The 2D modeling identifies a further challenge to high- p operation. The radial uniformities of the CH 3 radical and H-atom concentrations above the growing diamond surface both decline with increasing p , which are likely to manifest as less spatially uniform diamond growth (in terms of both rate and quality).

The dynamics of photoinduced O-H bond fission in five fluorinated phenols (2-fluorophenol, 3-fluorophenol, 2,6-difluorophenol, 3,4,5-trifluorophenol, and pentafluorophenol) have been investigated by H Rydberg atom photofragment translational spectroscopy following excitation at many wavelengths in the range 220 ≤ λ ≤ 275 nm. The presence of multiple fluorine substituents reduces the efficiency of O-H bond fission (by tunneling) from the first excited (1 1 ππ*) electronic state, whereas all bar the perfluorinated species undergo O-H bond fission when excited at shorter wavelengths (to the 2 1 ππ* state). As in bare phenol, O-H bond fission is deduced to occur by non-adiabatic coupling at conical intersections between the photoprepared "bright" ππ* states and the 1 1 πσ* potential energy surface. In all cases, the fluorophenoxyl photoproducts are found to be formed in a range of vibrational levels, all of which include an odd number of quanta (typically one) in an out-of-plane ( a ″) vibrational mode; this product vibration is viewed as a legacy of the parent out-of-plane motions that promote non-adiabatic coupling to the dissociative 1 1 πσ* potential. The radical products also show activity in in-plane vibrations involving coupled (both in- and out-of-phase) C-O and C-F wagging motions, which can be traced to the impulse between the recoiling O and H atoms and, in detail, are sensitive to the presence (or not) of an intramolecular F···H-O hydrogen bond. Upper limit values for the O-H bond dissociation energies are reported for all molecules studied apart from pentafluorophenol.

Silicon is a known trace contaminant in diamond grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods. Deliberately Si-doped diamond is currently attracting great interest because of the attractive optical properties of the negatively charged silicon-vacancy (SiV - ) defect. This work reports in-depth studies of microwave-activated H 2 plasmas containing trace (10-100 ppm) amounts of SiH 4 , with and without a few % of CH 4 , operating at pressures and powers relevant for contemporary diamond CVD, using a combination of experiment (spatially resolved optical emission (OE) imaging) and two-dimensional plasma chemical modeling. Key features identified from analysis and modeling of the OE from electronically excited H, H 2 , Si, and SiH species in the dilute Si/H plasmas include the following: (i) fast H-shifting reactions ensure that Si atoms are the most abundant silicon-containing species throughout the entire reactor volume, (ii) the low ionization potentials of all SiH x ( x ≤ 4) species and efficient ion conversion reactions ensure that even trace SiH 4 additions cause a change in the dominant ions in the plasma volume (from H 3 + to SiH x + ), with consequences for electron-ion recombination rates and ambipolar diffusion coefficients, and (iii) the total silicon content in the reactor volume can be substantially perturbed by silicon deposition and H atom etching reactions at the reactor walls. The effects of adding trace amounts of SiH 4 to a pre-existing C/H plasma are shown to be much less dramatic but include the following: (i) a Si substrate or fused silica components within the reactor are a ready (unintended) source of gas-phase Si-containing species, (ii) OE from electronically excited Si atoms should provide a reliable measure of the Si content in the hot plasma region, and (iii) Si atoms and/or SiC 2 species are the most abundant gas-phase Si-containing species just above the growing diamond surface and thus the most likely carriers of the silicon incorporated into CVD diamond.

We report a combined experimental/modeling study of optical emission from the A 2 Δ, B 2 Σ - , and C 2 Σ + states of the CH radical in microwave (MW) activated CH 4 /H 2 gas mixtures operating under a range of conditions relevant to the chemical vapor deposition of diamond. The experiment involves spatially and wavelength resolved imaging of the CH(C → X), CH(B → X), and CH(A → X) emissions at different total pressures, MW powers, C/H ratios in the source gas, and substrate diameters. The results are interpreted by extending an existing 2D ( r , z ) plasma model to include not just electron impact excitation but also chemiluminescent (CL) bimolecular reactions as sources of the observed CH emissions. Three possible CL reactions (of H atoms with CH 2 (a 1 A 1 ) and CH 2 (X 3 B 1 ) radicals and of C( 1 D) atoms with H 2 ) are identified as plausible sources of electronically excited CH radicals (particularly of the lowest energy CH(A) state radicals). Each or all of these could contribute to the observed emissions and, collectively, are deduced to be the major source of the CH(A) emissions observed at the high temperatures ( T gas ∼ 3000 K) and pressures (75 ≤ p ≤ 275 Torr) explored in the present study. We suggest that such CL contributions are likely to be commonplace in such high pressure, high temperature plasma environments and highlight some of the risks associated with using relative emission intensities as an indicator of the electron characteristics in such plasmas.

Microwave (MW) activated H 2 /Ar (and H 2 /Kr) plasmas operating under powers and pressures relevant to diamond chemical vapor deposition have been investigated experimentally and by 2-D modeling. The experiments return spatially and wavelength resolved optical emission spectra of electronically excited H 2 molecules and H and Ar(/Kr) atoms for a range of H 2 /noble gas mixing ratios. The self-consistent 2-D( r, z) modeling of different H 2 /Ar gas mixtures includes calculations of the MW electromagnetic fields, the plasma chemistry and electron kinetics, heat and species transfer and gas-surface interactions. Comparison with the trends revealed by the spatially resolved optical emission measurements and their variations with changes in process conditions help guide identification and refinement of the dominant plasma (and plasma emission) generation mechanisms and the more important Ar-H, Ar-H 2 , and H-H 2 coupling reactions. Noble gas addition is shown to encourage radial expansion of the plasma, and thus to improve the uniformity of the H atom concentration and the gas temperature just above the substrate. Noble gas addition in the current experiments is also found to enhance (unwanted) sputtering of the copper base plate of the reactor; the experimentally observed increase in gas phase Cu* emission is shown to correlate with the near substrate ArH + (and KrH + ) ion concentrations returned by the modeling, rather than with the relatively more abundant H 3 + (and H 3 O + ) ions.

Excited states formed by electron promotion to an antibonding σ* orbital are now recognized as key to understanding the photofragmentation dynamics of a broad range of heteroatom containing small molecules: alcohols, thiols, amines, and many of their aromatic analogues. Such excited states may be populated by direct photoexcitation, or indirectly by nonadiabatic transfer of population from some other optically excited state (e.g., a ππ* state). This Perspective explores the extent to which the fast-growing literature pertaining to such (n/π)σ*-state mediated bond fissions can inform and enhance our mechanistic understanding of photoinduced ring-opening in heterocyclic molecules.

We report a combined experimental and modeling study of microwave-activated dilute CH 4 /N 2 /H 2 plasmas, as used for chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of diamond, under very similar conditions to previous studies of CH 4 /H 2 , CH 4 /H 2 /Ar, and N 2 /H 2 gas mixtures. Using cavity ring-down spectroscopy, absolute column densities of CH(X, v = 0), CN(X, v = 0), and NH(X, v = 0) radicals in the hot plasma have been determined as functions of height, z, source gas mixing ratio, total gas pressure, p, and input power, P. Optical emission spectroscopy has been used to investigate, with respect to the same variables, the relative number densities of electronically excited species, namely, H atoms, CH, C 2 , CN, and NH radicals and triplet N 2 molecules. The measurements have been reproduced and rationalized from first-principles by 2-D (r, z) coupled kinetic and transport modeling, and comparison between experiment and simulation has afforded a detailed understanding of C/N/H plasma-chemical reactivity and variations with process conditions and with location within the reactor. The experimentally validated simulations have been extended to much lower N 2 input fractions and higher microwave powers than were probed experimentally, providing predictions for the gas-phase chemistry adjacent to the diamond surface and its variation across a wide range of conditions employed in practical diamond-growing CVD processes. The strongly bound N 2 molecule is very resistant to dissociation at the input MW powers and pressures prevailing in typical diamond CVD reactors, but its chemical reactivity is boosted through energy pooling in its lowest-lying (metastable) triplet state and subsequent reactions with H atoms. For a CH 4 input mole fraction of 4%, with N 2 present at 1-6000 ppm, at pressure p = 150 Torr, and with applied microwave power P = 1.5 kW, the near-substrate gas-phase N atom concentration, [N] ns , scales linearly with the N 2 input mole fraction and exceeds the concentrations [NH] ns , [NH 2 ] ns , and [CN] ns of other reactive nitrogen-containing species by up to an order of magnitude. The ratio [N] ns /[CH 3 ] ns scales proportionally with (but is 10 2 -10 3 times smaller than) the ratio of the N 2 to CH 4 input mole fractions for the given values of p and P, but [N] ns /[CN] ns decreases (and thus the potential importance of CN in contributing to N-doped diamond growth increases) as p and P increase. Possible insights regarding the well-documented effects of trace N 2 additions on the growth rates and morphologies of diamond films formed by CVD using MW-activated CH 4 /H 2 gas mixtures are briefly considered., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Novel CuO nanoparticle-capped ZnO nanorods have been produced using a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. These nanorods are shown to grow by a CuO-nanoparticle-assisted vapor-solid-solid (V-S-S) mechanism. The photoluminescence (PL) accompanying ultraviolet illumination of these capped nanorod samples shows large variations upon exposure to trace quantities of H2S gas. The present data suggest that both the Cu-doped ZnO stem and the CuO capping nanoparticle contribute to optical H2S sensing with these CuO-ZnO nanorods. This study represents the first demonstration of PL-based H2S gas sensing, at room temperature, with sub-ppm sensitivity. It also opens the way to producing CuO-ZnO nanorods by a V-S-S mechanism using gas-phase methods other than PLD.

We report a combined experimental/modeling study of microwave activated dilute N2/H2 and NH3/H2 plasmas as a precursor to diagnosis of the CH4/N2/H2 plasmas used for the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of N-doped diamond. Absolute column densities of H(n = 2) atoms and NH(X(3)Σ(-), v = 0) radicals have been determined by cavity ring down spectroscopy, as a function of height (z) above a molybdenum substrate and of the plasma process conditions, i.e., total gas pressure p, input power P, and the nitrogen/hydrogen atom ratio in the source gas. Optical emission spectroscopy has been used to investigate variations in the relative number densities of H(n = 3) atoms, NH(A(3)Π) radicals, and N2(C(3)Πu) molecules as functions of the same process conditions. These experimental data are complemented by 2-D (r, z) coupled kinetic and transport modeling for the same process conditions, which consider variations in both the overall chemistry and plasma parameters, including the electron (Te) and gas (T) temperatures, the electron density (ne), and the plasma power density (Q). Comparisons between experiment and theory allow refinement of prior understanding of N/H plasma-chemical reactivity, and its variation with process conditions and with location within the CVD reactor, and serve to highlight the essential role of metastable N2(A(3)Σ(+)u) molecules (formed by electron impact excitation) and their hitherto underappreciated reactivity with H atoms, in converting N2 process gas into reactive NHx (x = 0-3) radical species.

The excited state dynamics of phenol in water have been investigated using transient absorption spectroscopy. Solvated electrons and vibrationally cold phenoxyl radicals are observed upon 200 and 267 nm excitation, but with formation time scales that differ by more than 4 orders of magnitude. The impact of these findings is assessed in terms of the relative importance of autoionization versus proton-coupled electron transfer mechanisms in this computationally tractable model system.

Oxybenzone is a common constituent of many commercially available sunscreens providing photoprotection from ultraviolet light incident on the skin. Femtosecond transient electronic and vibrational absorption spectroscopies have been used to investigate the nonradiative relaxation pathways of oxybenzone in cyclohexane and methanol after excitation in the UVA region. The present data suggest that the photoprotective properties of oxybenzone can be understood in terms of an initial ultrafast excited state enol → keto tautomerization, followed by efficient internal conversion and subsequent vibrational relaxation to the ground state (enol) tautomer.

The photoisomerization dynamics of N-methyl-2-pyridone (NMP) dissolved in CH3CN have been interrogated by time-resolved electronic and vibrational absorption spectroscopy. Irradiation at two different wavelengths (330 or 267 nm) prepares NMP(S1) molecules with very different levels of vibrational excitation, which rapidly relax to low vibrational levels of the S1 state. Internal conversion with an associated time constant of 110(4) ps, leading to reformation of NMP(S0) molecules, is identified as the dominant (>90%) decay pathway. Much of the remaining fraction undergoes a photoinitiated rearrangement to yield two ketenes (revealed by their characteristic antisymmetric C═C═O stretching modes at 2110 and 2120 cm(-1)), which are in equilibrium. The rate of ketene formation is found to be pump-wavelength dependent, consistent with ab initio electronic structure calculations which predict a barrier on the S1 potential energy surface en route to a prefulvenic conical intersection, by which isomerization is deduced to occur. Two kinetic models-differentiated by whether product branching occurs in the S1 or S0 electronic states-are presented and used with equal success in the analysis of the experimental data, highlighting the difficulties associated with deducing unambiguous mechanistic information from kinetic data alone.

Oxybenzone (OB) and ferulic acid (FA) both find use in commercial sunscreens; caffeic acid (CA) differs from FA by virtue of an -OH group in place of a -OCH3 group on the aromatic ring. We report the results of ab initio calculations designed to explore the excited state nonradiative relaxation pathways that provide photostability to these molecules and the photoprotection they offer toward UV-A and UV-B radiation. In the case of OB, internal conversion (IC) is deduced to occur on ultrafast time scales, via a barrierless electron-driven H atom transfer pathway from the S1(1(1)nπ*) state to a conical intersection (CI) with the ground (S0) state potential energy surface (PES). The situation with respect to CA and FA is somewhat less clear-cut, with low energy CIs identified by linking excited states to the S0 state following photoexcitation and subsequent evolution along (i) a ring centered out-of-plane deformation coordinate, (ii) the E/Z isomerism coordinate and, in the case of CA, (iii) an O-H stretch coordinate. Analogy with catechol suggests that the last of these processes (if active) would lead to radical formation (and thus potential phototoxicity), encouraging a suggestion that FA might be superior to CA as a sunscreen ingredient.

A combination of ultrafast transient electronic absorption spectroscopy (TEAS) and transient vibrational absorption spectroscopy (TVAS) is used to investigate whether photoinduced N–H bond fission, mediated by a dissociative 1πσ(*) state, is active in aqueous adenine (Ade) at 266 and 220 nm. In order to isolate UV/visible and IR spectral signatures of the adeninyl radical (Ade[-H]), formed as a result of N–H bond fission, TEAS and TVAS are performed on Ade in D2O under basic conditions (pD = 12.5), which forms Ade[-H](-) anions via deprotonation at the N7 or N9 sites of Ade's 7H and 9H tautomers. At 220 nm we observe one-photon detachment of an electron from Ade[-H](-), which generates solvated electrons (eaq(-)) together with Ade[-H] radicals, with clear signatures in both TEAS and TVAS. Additional wavelength dependent TEAS measurements between 240–260 nm identify a threshold of 4.9 ± 0.1 eV (∼250 nm) for this photodetachment process in D2O. Analogous TEAS experiments on aqueous Ade at pD = 7.4 generate a similar photoproduct signal together with eaq(-) after excitation at 266 and 220 nm. These eaq(-) are born from ionization of Ade, together with Ade(+) cations, which are indistinguishable from Ade[-H] radicals in TEAS. Ade(+) and Ade[-H] are found to have different signatures in TVAS and we verify that the pD = 7.4 photoproduct signal observed in TEAS following 220 nm excitation is solely due to Ade(+) cations. Based on these observations, we conclude that: (i) N–H bond fission in aqueous Ade is inactive at wavelengths ≥220 nm; and (ii) if such a channel exists in aqueous solution, its threshold is strongly blue-shifted relative to the onset of the same process in gas phase 9H-Ade (≤233 nm). In addition, we extract excited state lifetimes and vibrational cooling dynamics for 9H-Ade and Ade[-H](-). In both cases, excited state lifetimes of <500 fs are identified, while vibrational cooling occurs within a time frame of 4–5 ps. In contrast, 7H-Ade is confirmed to have a longer excited state lifetime of ∼5–10 ps through both TEAS and TVAS.

The dynamics of photoexcited 2,4-dimethylpyrrole (DMP) were studied using time-resolved velocity map imaging spectroscopy over a range of photoexcitation wavelengths (276-238 nm). Two dominant H atom elimination channels were inferred from the time-resolved total kinetic energy release spectra, one which occurs with a time constant of ∼120 fs producing H atoms with high kinetic energies centered around 5000-7000 cm(-1) and a second channel with a time constant of ∼3.5 ps producing H atoms with low kinetic energies centered around 2500-3000 cm(-1). The first of these channels is attributed to direct excitation from the ground electronic state (S0) to the dissociative 1(1)πσ* state (S1) and subsequent N-H bond fission, moderated by a reaction barrier in the N-H stretch coordinate. In contrast to analogous measurements in pyrrole (Roberts et al. Faraday Discuss. 2013, 163, 95-116), the N-H dissociation times are invariant with photoexcitation wavelength, implying a relatively flatter potential in the vertical Franck-Condon region of the 1(1)πσ* state of DMP. The origins of the second channel are less clear-cut, but given the picosecond time constant for this process, we posit that this channel is indirect and is likely a consequence of populating higher-lying electronic states [e.g., 2(1)πσ* (S2)] which, following vibronic coupling into lower-lying intermediary states (namely, S1 or S0), leads to prompt N-H bond fission.

A detailed mechanistic investigation of the early stages of the Paternò-Büchi reaction following 267 nm excitation of benzaldehyde in cyclohexene has been completed using ultrafast, broadband transient UV-visible and IR absorption spectroscopies. Absorption due to electronically excited triplet state benzaldehyde decays on a 80 ps time scale via reaction with cyclohexene. The growth and subsequent decay of the biradical intermediate produced following C-O bond formation is followed by transient vibrational spectroscopy. The biradical decays by ring closure to an oxetane or by dissociating, reforming the ground state reactants. Detailed kinetic analysis allowed derivation of quantum yields and rate constants for these competing biradical decay processes, ϕ(oxetane) = 0.53, ϕ(diss) = 0.47, koxetane = 0.27 ± 0.09 ns(-1) and k(diss) = 0.24 ± 0.09 ns(-1). This study provides a striking illustration of the ways in which contemporary ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy methods can be used to dissect the mechanism and kinetics of a classic photoreaction.
