A rhodium(I) catalyst incorporating the Me-DuPhos ligand promotes enantioselective intermolecular hydroacylation between beta-S-aldehydes and 1,3-disubstituted allenes. The nonconjugated enone products are obtained in good yields and with high enantioselectivities.

Whereas methylammonium chloride, [MeNH(3)]Cl, reacts with LiGaH(4) in an ether solution to give, according to the conditions, either the adduct MeH(2)N x GaH(3) or the cationic derivative [(MeH(2)N)(2)GaH(2)](+)Cl(-), the corresponding reaction of [MeNH(3)]Cl or [(t)BuNH(3)]Cl with LiAlH(4) proceeds mainly, with H(2) elimination, to the imidoalane Li(2)[(RN)(4)(AlH(2))(6)] (R = Me, 1, or (t)Bu, 2). The crystal structure of 1 x 2Et(2)O reveals, for the first time, anionic units with an adamantane-like Al(6)N(4) skeleton. The Li cations exist at two distinct sites, each linked via Li(mu-H)Al bridges to two [(MeN)(4)(AlH(2))(6)](2-) cages. Despite disordering of the tBu groups, the crystal structure of 2 evidently includes analogous anionic units. By contrast, the main product of the reaction between [(i)PrNH(3)]Cl and LiAlH(4) under similar conditions is the known neutral, hexameric imidoalane [(i)PrNAlH](6), 3, the crystal structure of which has been redetermined.

Two new types of unsymmetrical bis(thiosemicarbazone) proligands and their neutral zinc(II) and copper(II) complexes have been synthesized. These bifunctional ligands both chelate the metal ions and provide pendent amino groups that can be readily functionalized with biologically active molecules. Functionalization has been demonstrated by the synthesis of three water-soluble glucose conjugates of the new zinc(II) bis(thiosemicarbazonato) complexes, and their copper(II) analogues have been prepared in aqueous solution via transmetalation. A range of techniques including NMR, electron paramagnetic resonance, cyclic voltammetry, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), UV/vis, and fluorescence emission spectroscopy have been used to characterize the complexes. Four compounds, including two zinc(II) complexes, have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The connectivity and conformation of the glucose conjugates have been assigned by NMR spectroscopy. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations have been used to assign the electronic transitions of the copper(II) bis(thiosemicarbazonato) chromophore. Two copper-64-radiolabeled complexes, including one glucose conjugate, have been prepared and characterized using radio-HPLC, and transmetalation is shown to be a viable method for radiolabeling compounds with copper radionuclides. Preliminary cell washout studies have been performed under normoxic conditions, and the uptake and intracellular distribution have been studied using confocal fluorescence microscopy.

A combined experimental and DFT study of the reactions of the titanium imido methyl cation [Ti(NtBu)(Me3[9]aneN3)Me]+ (4+) with AlMe3 and ZnMe2 is described. Reaction of 4+ with AlMe3 gave [Ti(NtBu)(Me3[9]aneN3)(mu-Me)2AlMe2]+ (7+), the first structurally characterized AlMe3 adduct of a transition metal alkyl cation and a model for the presumed resting state in MAO-activated olefin polymerizations. Reaction of 4+ with ZnMe2 also gave a methyl-bridged heterobinuclear species, namely [Ti(mu-NtBu)(Me3[9]aneN3)(mu-Me)2ZnMe]+ (8+), the first directly observed ZnMe2 adduct of a transition metal alkyl cation. At room temperature, all three metal-bound methyls of 8+ underwent rapid exchange with those of free ZnMe2, whereas at 233 K only the terminal Zn-Me group exchanged significantly. Addition of AlMe3 to 8+ quantitatively formed 7+ and ZnMe2. Reaction of 4+ with Cp2ZrMe2 gave [Ti(NtBu){Me2(mu-CH2)[9]aneN3}(mu-CH2)ZrCp2]+ (10+) via a highly selective double C-H bond activation reaction in which both alkyl groups of Cp2ZrMe2 were lost. DFT calculations on models of 7+ confirmed the approximately square-based pyramidal geometries for the bridging methyl groups. Calculations on 8+ found that the formation of the Ti(mu-Me)2Zn moiety is assisted by an Nimide-->Zn dative bond. DFT calculations for the sterically less encumbered methyl cation [Ti(NMe)(H3[9]aneN3)Me]+ found strong thermodynamic preferences for adducts featuring Nimide-->M (M = Al or Zn) interactions. This offers insight into recently observed structure-productivity trends in MAO-activated imido-based polymerization catalysts. Calculations on the metallocenium adducts [Cp2Ti(mu-Me)2AlMe2]+ and [Cp2Ti(mu-Me)2ZnMe]+ are described, each showing alpha-agostic interactions for the bridging methyl groups. For these systems and the imido ones, the coordination of AlMe3 to the corresponding monomethyl cation is ca. 30 kJ mol-1 more favorable than for ZnMe2.

One-pot reactions of V(NMe2)4 with a range of primary alkyl- and arylamines RNH2 and Me3SiCl afforded the corresponding five-coordinate vanadium(4+) imido compounds V(NR)Cl2(NHMe2)2 [R = 2,6-C6H3(i)Pr2 (1a, previously reported), 2-C6H4(t)Bu (1b), 2-C6H4CF3 (1c), (t)Bu (1d), Ad (Ad = adamantyl, 1e)]. The crystal structures of 1b (two diamorphic forms) and 1c featured N-H...Cl hydrogen-bonded chains. Reaction of 1a-e with the neutral face-capping, N3 donor ligands TACN (TACN = 1,4,7-trimethyltriazacyclononane) or TPM [TPM = tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)methane] gave the corresponding six-coordinate complexes V(NR)(TACN)Cl2 (2a-e) and V(NR)(TPM)Cl2 (3a-e). The X-ray structures of 2b, 2c, 2d, 3b, 3c, and 3e were determined. When activated with methylaluminoxane, certain of the complexes V(NR)(TPM)Cl2 (3) formed moderately active ethylene polymerization catalysts, whereas none of the compounds V(NR)(TACN)Cl2 (2) were active.

The enzymatic desymmetrization of 2,2- and 2,5-disubstituted pyrroline compounds is reported in a procedure which gives access to both enantiomers in excellent enantiomeric excess and good yield. The enzyme reaction precursors are formed easily from two readily available substituted pyrroles using both ammonia (Na/NH3) and ammonia-free (Li/DBB) Birch reduction conditions.

Two new thiosemicarbazone-pyridylhydrazine (THYNIC) hybrid ligands have been synthesized. Copper(II) and copper(I) complexes of the ligands have been prepared and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Cyclic voltammetry measurements show that the copper(II) complexes undergo quasi-reversible reductions at biologically accessible potentials. One of the ligands, bearing a pendant carboxylate arm, has been conjugated to N-alpha-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-L-lysine.

Reaction of Na2O2NN' [H2O2NN' = (2-C5H4N)CH2N[2-HO-3,5-C6H2(t)Bu2]2] with M(BH4)3(THF)3 afforded the dimeric, rare-earth borohydride compounds [M(O2NN')(mu-BH4)(THF)n]2 [M = Y(III), n = 0.5 (1-Y); M = NdIII, n = 1 (1-Nd); M = SmIII, n = 0 (1-Sm)]. For comparison the chloride analogues [M(O2NN')(mu-Cl)(THF)n]2 (2-M; M = La(III) or Sm(III), n = 0; M = Nd(III), n = 1) and the corresponding pyridine adducts [M(O2NN')(mu-X)(py)]2 [X = BH4 (3-M) or Cl (4-M); M = La(III), Nd(III), or Sm(III)] were prepared and structurally characterized for 4-La. Compounds 1-M initiated the ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone. The best molecular weight control (suppression of chain transfer) for all three monomers was found for the samarium system 1-Sm. The most effective heterotactic enrichment (Pr) in the polymerization of rac-lactide was found for 1-Y (P(r) = 87%). Compound 1-Nd catalyzed the block copolymerization of epsilon-caprolactone and L- and rac-lactide provided that epsilon-caprolactone was added first. Attempted block polymerization by the addition of L-lactide first, or random copolymerization of a ca. 1:1 mixture of epsilon-caprolactone and L-lactide, gave only a poly(L-lactide) homopolymer.

[structure: see text] A vinylene-linked porphyrin dimer, with no substituents at the beta-positions, has been synthesized by CuI/CsF promoted Stille coupling. In the crystal structure of this dimer, the C(2)H(2) bridge is twisted by 45 degrees relative to the plane of the porphyrins. The absorption, emission spectra, and electrochemistry reveal substantial porphyrin-porphyrin pi-conjugation. The triplet excited-state absorption spectrum of this dimer makes it suitable for reverse saturable absorption at 710-900 nm.

The reaction of 1,1-diphenylhydrazine with Ti(NMe2)2Cl2 produced the monomeric terminal titanium hydrazido(2-) species Ti(NNPh2)Cl2(HNMe2)2 (1) in near-quantitative yield. The reaction of Ti(NMe2)2Cl2 with the less sterically demanding ligand precursors 1,1-dimethylhydrazine or N-aminopiperidine gave the dimeric mu-eta2,eta1-bridged compounds Ti2(mu-eta2,eta1-NNMe2)2Cl4(HNMe2)2 (2) and Ti2[mu-eta2,eta1-NN(CH2)5]2Cl4(HNMe2)3 (3). The X-ray structures of 2 and 3 showed the formation of N-H...Cl hydrogen bonded dimers or chains, respectively. The reaction of 1 with an excess of pyridine formed [Ti(NNPh2)Cl2(py)2]n (4, n = 1 or 2). The reaction of the tert-butyl imido complex Ti(N(t)Bu)Cl2(py)3 with either 1,1-dimethylhydrazine or N-aminopiperidine again resulted in the formation of hydrazido-bridged dimeric complexes, namely Ti2(mu-eta2,eta1-NNMe2)2Cl4(py)2 (5, structurally characterized) and Ti2[mu-eta2,eta1-NN(CH2)5]2Cl4(py)2 (6). Compounds 1 and 4 are potential new entry points into terminal hydrazido(2-) chemistry of titanium. Compound 1 reacted with neutral fac-N3 donor ligands to form Ti(NNPh2)Cl2(Me3[9]aneN3) (7), Ti(NNPh2)Cl2(Me3[6]aneN3) (8), Ti(NNPh2)Cl2[HC(Me2pz)3] (9, structurally characterized), and Ti(NNPh2)Cl2[HC(n)Bupz)3] (10) in good yields (Me3[9]aneN3 = trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane, Me3[6]aneN3 = trimethyl-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane, HC(Me2pz)3 = tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)methane, and HC((n)Bupz)3 = tris(4-(n)butylpyrazolyl)methane). DFT calculations were performed on both the model terminal hydrazido compound Ti(NNPh2)Cl2[HC(pz)3] (I) and the corresponding imido compounds Ti(NMe)Cl2[HC(pz)3] (II) and Ti(NPh)Cl2[HC(pz)3] (III). The NNPh2 ligand binds to the metal center in an analogous manner to that of terminal imido ligands (metalligand triple bond), but with one of the Ti=N(alpha) pi components significantly destabilized by a pi interaction with the lone pair of the N(beta) atom. The NR ligand sigma donor ability was found to be NMe > NPh > NNPh2, whereas the overall (sigma + pi) donor ability is NMe > NNPh2 > NPh, as judged by fragment orbital populations, Ti-N atom-atom overlap populations, and fragment-charge analysis. DFT calculations on the hydrazido ligand in a mu-eta2,eta1-bridging mode showed involvement of the N=N pi electrons in donation to one of the Ti centers. This TiN2 interaction is best represented as a metallocycle.

As part of our continuing studies of pyrone-containing natural products, a series 6-methoxypyran-2-ones were synthesized. These were found to react with molecular oxygen at 20 degrees C, and this novel reaction yielded a series of highly functionalized alpha,beta-butenolides. [reaction: see text]

The first 3-D open-framework TiGaPO complex, constructed from Ti(III)O(6), Ti(IV)O(6), GaO(4), and PO(4) polyhedra, contains pyridinium cations in a 1-D pore network and can be oxidized in air at 543 K with retention of the original framework structure.

Reactions of Ti(NMe(2))(2)Cl(2) with a wide range of primary alkyl and arylamines RNH(2) afforded the corresponding 5-coordinate imido titanium compounds Ti(NR)Cl(2)(NHMe(2))(2) (R = (t)Bu (1), (i)Pr (2), CH(2)Ph (3), Ph (4), 2,6-C(6)H(3)Me(2) (5), 2,6-C(6)H(3)(i)Pr(2) (6), 2,4,6-C(6)H(2)F(3) (7), 2,3,5,6-C(6)HF(4) (8), C(6)F(5) (9), 4-C(6)H(4)Cl (10), 2,3,5,6-C(6)HCl(4) (11), 2-C(6)H(4)CF(3) (12), 2-C(6)H(4)(t)Bu (13)). The compounds 1-13 are monomeric in solution but in the solid state form either N-H...Cl hydrogen bonded dimers or chains or perfluorophenyl pi-stacked chains, depending on the imido R-group. The compound 13 was also prepared in a "one-pot" synthesis from RNH(2) and Ti(NMe(2))(4) and Me(3)SiCl. Reaction of certain Ti(NR)Cl(2)(NHMe(2))(2) compounds with an excess of pyridine afforded the corresponding bis- or tris-pyridine analogues [Ti(NR)Cl(2)(py)(x)](y) (x = 3, y = 1; x = y = 2), and the structure of Ti(2)(NC(6)F(5))(2)Cl(2)(mu-Cl)(2)(py)(4) shows pi-stacking of perfluorophenyl rings. Reaction of Ti(NMe(2))(2)Cl(2) with cross-linked aminomethyl polystyrene gave quantitative conversion to the corresponding solid-supported titanium imido complex. This paper represents the first detailed study of how supramolecular structures of imido compounds may be influenced by simple variation of the imido ligand N-substituent.

The imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine skeleton provides a versatile platform for the generation of new types of stable N-heterocyclic carbenes. Rh(I) mono- (6) and biscarbenes (7) from imidazo[1,5-a]pyridin-3-ylidenes (ImPy) and derivatives such as 13 from a mesoionic carbene were synthesized and characterized.

A wide range of pseudorotaxane assemblies containing positively charged pyridinium, pyridinium nicotinamide, imidazolium, benzimidazolium and guanidinium threading components, and macrocyclic isophthalamide polyether ligands have been prepared using a general anion templation procedure. In noncompetitive solvent media, coupling halide anion recognition by a macrocyclic ligand with ion-pairing between the halide anion and a strongly associated cation provides the driving force for interpenetration. Extensive solution 1H NMR binding studies, thermodynamic investigations, and single-crystal X-ray structure determinations reveal that the nature of the halide anion template, strength of the ion-pairing between the anion template and the cationic threading component, and to a lesser extent favorable second sphere pi-pi aromatic stacking interactions between the positively charged threading component and macrocyclic ligand, together with macrocyclic ring size, affect the efficacy of pseudorotaxane formation.

On treatment with trifluoroacetic acid butenolide 14 undergoes N-Boc deprotection and condensation followed by an iminium ion activated intramolecular Diels-Alder cycloaddition to give the (+)-himbacine precursor 11 on reductive work up. Compound 11 was converted into (+)-himbacine in four synthetic steps. [reaction: see text]

The reactions of the low-temperature polymorph of copper(I) cyanide (LT-CuCN) with concentrated aqueous alkali-metal halide solutions have been investigated. At room temperature, KX (X = Br and I) and CsX (X = Cl, Br, and I) produce the addition products K[Cu(2)(CN)(2)Br].H(2)O (I), K(3)[Cu(6)(CN)(6)I(3)].2H(2)O (II), Cs[Cu(3)(CN)(3)Cl] (III), Cs[Cu(3)(CN)(3)Br] (IV), and Cs(2)[Cu(4)(CN)(4)I(2)].H(2)O (V), with 3-D frameworks in which the -(CuCN)- chains present in CuCN persist. No reaction occurs, however, with NaX (X = Cl, Br, I) or KCl. The addition compounds, I-V, reconvert to CuCN when washed. Both low- and high-temperature polymorphs of CuCN (LT- and HT-CuCN) are produced, except in the case of Cs[Cu(3)(CN)(3)Cl] (III), which converts only to LT-CuCN. Heating similar AX-CuCN reaction mixtures under hydrothermal conditions at 453 K for 1 day produces single crystals of I-V suitable for structure determination. Under these more forcing conditions, reactions also occur with NaX (X = Cl, Br, I) and KCl. NaBr and KCl cause some conversion of LT-CuCN into HT-CuCN, while NaCl and NaI, respectively, react to form the mixed-valence Cu(I)/Cu(II) compounds [Cu(II)(OH(2))(4)][Cu(I)(4)(CN)(6)], a known phase, and [Cu(II)(OH(2))(4)][Cu(I)(4)(CN)(4)I(2)] (VI), a 3-D framework, which contains infinite -(CuCN)- chains. After 3 days of heating under hydrothermal conditions, the reaction between KI and CuCN produces [Cu(II)(OH(2))(4)][Cu(I)(2)(CN)I(2)](2) (VII), in which the CuCN chains are broken into single Cu-CN-Cu units, which in turn are linked into chains via iodine atoms and then into layers via long Cu-C and Cu-Cu interactions.

The first example of a [2]catenane structure to be synthesized using anion templation is described. The nature of the anion template is demonstrated to be crucial to the assembly process, with only chloride anion producing the [2]catenane in acceptable yield. Anion binding studies reveal a dramatic catenation effect on anion selectivity properties as compared to a noncatenated acyclic receptor.

Reaction of [Cu(MeCN)(4)](+) with thiosemicarbazones bearing groups such as phenol, pyridine, or ferrocene gives tetranuclear or hexanuclear clusters with functional substituents; analogous air stable fluorescent clusters can also be prepared with Ag(I).

Two new silver-antimony sulfides, [C(2)H(9)N(2)][Ag(2)SbS(3)] (1) and [C(2)H(9)N(2)](2)[Ag(5)Sb(3)S(8)] (2), have been prepared solvothermally in the presence of ethylenediamine and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, and elemental analysis. Compound 1 crystallizes in the space group Pn (a = 6.1781(1) A, b =11.9491(3) A, c = 6.9239(2) A, beta =111.164(1) degrees ) and 2 in the space group Pm (a = 6.2215(2) A, b = 15.7707(7) A, c = 11.6478(5) A, beta = 92.645(2) degrees ). The structure of 1 consists of chains of fused five-membered Ag(2)SbS(2) rings linked to form layers, between which the template molecules reside. Compound 2 contains honeycomb-like sheets of fused silver-antimony-sulfide six-membered rings linked to form double layers. The idealized structure can be considered to be an ordered defect derivative of that of lithium bismuthide, Li(3)Bi, and represents a new solid-state structure type.

A new method for the synthesis of low to intermediate oxidation state rhenium complexes containing a bifunctional ligand has been developed. Reaction of [ReO(4)](-) with substituted phenylhydrazines and triphenylphosphine in acetonitrile in the presence of HCl allows the isolation of [ReCl(2)(NNC(6)H(4)-4-R)(NCCH(3))(PPh(3))(2)] (where R = OCH(3), Cl, or CO(2)CH(3)). The substituted hydrazine acts as both a reductant and source of a monodentate diazenide ligand. The compounds have all been characterized in the solid state by X-ray crystallography and in the solution state by NMR, electrospray mass spectrometry, and HPLC. Cyclic voltammetry measurements show that the mono-diazenide complexes undergo a reversible oxidation.

The boron trifluoride-catalyzed Rothemund condensation of triisopropylsilyl (TIPS) propynal 1 with 3,4-diethylpyrrole in dichloromethane, followed by oxidation with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) generates a mixture of products, including [15]triphyrin(1.1.3) H3, corrole H(3)4, porphyrin H(2)2, [24]pentaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1) H(4)5, [28]hexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1) H(4)6, and two linear tripyrromethenes H(2)7 and H(2)8. We report the spectroscopic characteristics of these unusual chromophores, together with the crystal structures of triphyrin H3 (and its zinc complex ZnCl3), porphyrin H(2)2 (and its metal complexes Zn2, Ni2 and Pt2), hexaphyrin H(4)6, and tripyrromethene nickel(II) complex Ni7. When the condensation is catalyzed with trifluoroacetic acid, rather than boron trifluoride, the triphyrin H3 become the main product (26% yield). This novel macrocycle is linked with a TIPS-substituted exocyclic double bond. This C=C bond makes an eta(2)-interaction with the zinc center in ZnCl3 with C-Zn distances of 2.863 and 3.025 A. The porphyrin H(2)2 is severely ruffled, and its absorption spectrum is red-shifted and broadened compared with the analogous compound without ethyl substituents. The hexaphyrin H(4)6 adopts a figure-of-eight conformation with virtual C(2) symmetry in the solid state and C(2) symmetry in solution on the NMR time scale. Oxidation with DDQ appears to convert this nonaromatic [28]hexaphyrin into an aromatic [26]hexaphyrin with a strongly red-shifted absorption spectrum, but the oxidized macrocyle is too unstable to isolate.

[reaction: see text] The biomimetic synthesis of the bicyclic core of the novel immunosuppresants SNF4435C and SNF4435D is reported. The core framework was efficiently generated from the all-trans tetraene precursor in one step and in good yield.

The electrochemical reduction of Cu(II) bis(thiosemicarbazone) complexes [Cu(II)(btsc)] is accompanied by protonation to give an unstable Cu(I) intermediate [Cu(btscH(2))](+). The nature of this intermediate was probed by reaction of bis(thiosemicarbazone) ligands with a Cu(I) precursor which gave a novel helical dimeric dicationic complex. The dependence of these reactions on the ligand backbone substituents is discussed together with their possible relevance to the use of Cu(II) bis(thiosemicarbazone) ligands as hypoxic selective imaging and therapeutic agents.

The syntheses of the 4-coordinate Tp'MCl complexes (where M = Fe (1), Mn (2); and Tp' = hydrotris(3-isopropyl-4-bromopyrazolyl)borate) are described. The single-crystal X-ray structures show that the metal centers have distorted tetrahedral coordination. Analogous reaction of CrCl(2)(MeCN)(2) with TlTp' gave Cr(kappa(3)-Tp')(kappa(2)-Tp') (3) as the initial product. The 5-coordinate structure was assigned by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and it was found that the kappa(3) ligand had isomerized to hydro(3-isopropyl-4-bromopyrazolyl)(2)(5-isopropyl-4-bromopyrazolyl)borate). 3 is labile in solution: in pentane it slowly converts to the 6-coordinate isomer Cr(kappa(3)-Tp')(2) (4), whose structure was determined by X-ray crystallography. In 4 both ligands are isomerized. Both 3 and 4 display Jahn-Teller distorted structures expected for high-spin d(4) configurations. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm that 1, 2, and 3 all have high-spin electronic configurations in the range 5-300 K. In benzene solution 3 decomposes; one product [Cr(kappa(3)-Tp')(2)](+)[Tp'](-) (5), was identified by X-ray crystallography. 5 contains a pseudooctahedral Cr(III) cation with both ligands in the isomerized form and an uncoordinated Tp' ligand as counterion. Mechanistic studies reveal that this reaction is light rather than heat induced. IR spectroscopy is utilized to confirm the ligand hapticity in all complexes from the value of nu(B)(-)(H), and comparison is made with similar compounds.
