WO3/N-rGO composites with a phase-junction structure were prepared by hydrothermal methods. The formation of orthorhombic and monoclinic WO3 during the in situ synthesis of WO3 on nitrogen-doped graphene was demonstrated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) results demonstrated the successful doping of nitrogen atoms in graphene. The effect of N-rGO and phase-junction structure on the photoelectric properties was investigated by photoelectrochemical tests. In the I–t test results, WO3/N-rGO exhibited a photocurrent density of 0.204 mA/cm2, which was 5.8 and 2.6 times higher than those of WO3 and WO3/rGO, respectively. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) demonstrated that N-rGO and phase-junction structure reduce the electrochemical impedance of the composites. In the linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and Mott–Schottky (MS) results, WO3/N-rGO exhibited the highest photocurrent (3.65 mA/cm2) intensity at 1.23 V bias and the largest carrier density (3.63 × 1020 cm–3), respectively. Recently, sensitive and selective detection of exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) has been garnering significant attention, because it is related to many complex diseases, including cancer. Herein, we report a ratiometric fluorescent bioprobe based on DNA-labeled carbon dots (DNA-CDs) and 5,7-dinitro-2-sulfo-acridone (DSA) coupling with the target-catalyzing signal amplification for the detection of exosomal miRNA-21. There was high fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency between carbon dots (CDs) and DSA when the bioprobe was assembled. However, in the presence of the target, with disassembling of the fluorescent bioprobe, the fluorescence intensities of CDs and DSA were changed simultaneously. Because of the ratio of dual fluorescence intensities, this ratiometric fluorescent bioprobe was able to cancel out environmental fluctuations by calculating emission intensity ratio at two different wavelengths, being robust and stable enough for detection of exosomal miRNA-21. In addition, we displayed that a single miRNA-21 can catalyze the disassembly of multiple CDs with DSA theoretically, yielding significant change in the fluorescence ratio for the detection of miRNA-21. With this signal amplification strategy, the limit of detection was as low as 3.0 fM. Furthermore, because of the introduction of lock nucleic acid to mediate the strand displacement reaction, the selectivity of this strategy was improved remarkably, even against single base mismatch sequence. More importantly, our strategy could monitor the dynamic change of exosomal miRNA-21, which maybe becomes a potential tool to distinguish cancer exosomes and nontumorigenic exosomes. In a short, this ratiometric fluorescence bioprobe possessed high stability, sensitivity and selectivity coupling with ease of operation and cost efficiency, leading to great potential for wide application.

A functionalizable organosiliceous hybrid magnetic material was facilely constructed by surface polymerization of octavinyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) on the Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The resultant Fe3O4@POSS was identified as a mesoporous architecture with an average particle diameter of 20 nm and high specific surface area up to 653.59 m(2) g(-1). After it was tethered with an organic chain containing dithiol via thiol-ene addition reaction, the ultimate material (Fe3O4@POSS-SH) still have moderate specific area (224.20 m(2) g(-1)) with almost identical porous morphology. It turns out to be a convenient, efficient single adsorbent for simultaneous elimination of inorganic heavy metal ions and organic dyes in simulate multicomponent wastewater at ambient temperature. The Fe3O4@POSS-SH nanoparticles can be readily withdrawn from aqueous solutions within a few seconds under moderate magnetic field and exhibit good stability in strong acid and alkaline aqueous matrices. Contaminants-loaded Fe3O4@POSS-SH can be easily regenerated with either methanol-acetic acid (for organic dyes) or hydrochloric acid (for heavy metal ions) under ultrasonication. The renewed one keeps appreciable adsorption capability toward both heavy metal ions and organic dyes, the removal rate for any of the pollutants exceeds 92% to simulate wastewater with multiple pollutants after repeated use for 5 cycles. Beyond the environmental remediation function, thanks to the pendant vinyl groups, the Fe3O4@POSS derived materials rationally integrating distinct or versatile functions could be envisaged and consequently a wide variety of applications may emerge.

Fluorescent quantum dots have great potential in cellular labeling and tracking. Here, PEG encapsulated CdSe/ZnS quantum dots have been conjugated with Tat peptide, and introduced into living mesenchymal stem cells. The Tat peptide conjugated quantum dots in mesenchymal stem cells were assessed by fluorescent microscopy, laser confocal microscope and. flow cytometry. The result shows that Tat peptide conjugated quantum dots could enter mesenchymal stem cells efficiently. The Tat-quantum dots labeled stem cells were further injected into the tail veins of NOD/SCID beta2 M null mice, and the tissue distribution of these labeled cells in nude mice were examined with fluorescence microscope. The result shows that characteristic fluorescence of quantum dots was observed primarily in the liver, the lung and the spleen, with little or no quantum dots accumulation in the brain, the heart, or the kidney.
