The synthesis and catalytic activity of lanthanide monoamido complexes supported by a beta-diketiminate ligand are reported. The resulting complexes have displayed good catalytic activity for the polymerization of methyl methacrylate and epsilon-caprolactone.

A convenient method for the synthesis of lanthanide alkoxo complexes supported by a carbon-bridged bis(phenolate)ligand 2,2'-methylenebis(6-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxo) [MBMP(super(2-)] is described. It is found that the alkoxolanthanide complexes can catalyze the controlled polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone.

A highly efficient method is described for preparing [alpha]-hydroxy phosphonates via lanthanide amides [[([Me.sub.3]Si).sub.2N].sub.3]Ln([[mu]-Cl)Li[(THF).sub.3] catalyzed hydrophosphonylation of aromatic aldehydes. The existence of LiCl in the catalyst is a key factor impacting the catalytic activity.

The reactions of camphor-derived sulfur ylide with [alpha],[beta]-unsaturated ketone are used for the highly efficient and selective synthesis of optically active cyclohexadiene epoxides and vinylcyclopropanes with excellent diastereoselectivities.

The application of heterobimetallic lanthanide/sodium phenoxides as efficient catalysts for amidation of aldehydes with amines under mild conditions is described. The high activity shown by the heterobimetallic complexes compared to monometallic complexes is attributed to cooperation of lanthanide and sodium in the catalyst.

The high catalytic activity of divalent lanthanide complexes for addition of amines and terminal alkynes to carbodiimides is described. The active species is shown to be a lanthanide guanidinate for addition of amines and a lanthanide amidinate complex for addition of terminal alkynes.

A tandem Michael addition/ylide epoxidation is developed for the rapid creation of highly functionalized cyclohexadiene epoxide skeletons with three stereocenters. The readily accessible starting material, mild reaction conditions, high selectivities and recoverable chiral sulfide has made this reaction very useful in organic synthesis.

The synthesis, characterization and reactivity of a series of neutral and anionic bis(phenolate) lanthanide amides synthesized using metathesis reaction is reported.

The study explains the synthesis and structural characterization of various novel mixed-metal alkoxide clusters of lanthanide and sodium. These clusters are found to be extremely effective as the catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization of the [epsilon]-caprolactone and trimethylene carbonate.

A new imidazolidine-bridged bis(phenol) is prepared by a simple Mannich reaction and a series of lanthanide derivatives supported by this ligand are synthesized by direct salt metathesis reaction. A novel bimetallic ytterbium dichloride is used as a precursor to prepare a series of ytterbium derivatives by direct salt metathesis reactions and the bulkiness of the reagents has profound effect on the outcome of these reactions.

The first ytterbium(II) complex supported by a diaminobis(phenolate) ligand, YbL[(THF).sub.2].0.5[C.sub.7][H.sub.8] (THF = tetrahydrofuran), is synthesized in high yield by the amine elimination reaction. The analysis of YbL[(THF).sub.2].0.5[C.sub.7][H.sub.8] is found to be a highly efficient catalyst for ring-opening polymerization of [epsilon]-caprolactone.

The introduction of Li(super +) and Cl(super -) ions into lanthanide amide complexes afforded three unprecedented Ln-thiolate compounds when treated with a low concentration of benzenthiol. It is anticipated that the synthetic methodology might be applied to other Ln-amide compounds to yield previously unknown species with better catalytic activities.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction to useful chemicals is of great significance to global climate and energy supply. In this study, CO2 has been photoelectrocatalytically reduced to formate at metallic Cu nanoparticles (Cu NPs) decorated Co3O4 nanotube arrays (NTs) with high yield and high selectivity of nearly 100%. Noticeably, up to 6.75 mmol·L-1·cm-2 of formate was produced in an 8 h photoelectrochemical process, representing one of the highest yields among those in the literature. The results of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and photoelectrochemical characterization demonstrated that the enhanced production of formate was attributable to the self-supported Co3O4 NTs/Co structure and the interface band structure of Co3O4 NTs and metallic Cu NPs. Furthermore, a possible two-electron reduction mechanism on the selective PEC CO2 reduction to formate at the Cu-Co3O4 NTs was explored. The first electron reduction intermediate, CO2 ads •-, was adsorbed on Cu in the form of Cu-O. With the carbon atom suspended in solution, CO2 ads •- is readily protonated to form the HCOO- radical. And HCOO- as a product rapidly desorbs from the copper surface with a second electron transfer to the adsorbed species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A cationic palladium(II)-catalyzed enantioselective intramolecular addition of vinylpalladium species to ketones initiated by the carbopalladation of alkynoates under mild conditions without a Pd(II)/Pd(0) redox system was developed with high yield and enantioselectivity. This article presents information on the construction of polymeric and oligomeric lanthanide(IlI) thiolates from preformed complexes. Several synthetic approaches to lanthanide thiolates, including metathesis of a lanthanide halide with an alkali metal thiolate, oxidative addition of organic disulfide RSSR to lanthanide(II) complexes or lanthanide metals under the presence of catalyst, and the reactions of lanthanide thiolates with elemental sulfur, have been developed. However, an additional approach, protonolysis of preformed lanthanide complexes with thiols, has been less explored for synthesizing polymeric or oligomeric lanthanide thiolate complexes.
