Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have emerged as promising next-generation optoelectronic materials and achieved remarkable performances in both light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and solar cells (SCs). Despite reaching market demands such as high efficiencies and low manufacturing cost, the long-term stability of MHPs is still a massive challenge for commercialization. The presence of surface and bulk defects due to low-temperature solution-processable methods causes past degradation of perovskites. Here, we have investigated the passivation strategy for methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) using resin polymer poly-[(phenylglycidyl ether)-co-formaldehyde] (PCF). PCF acts as a Lewis base additive with an electron-donating oxygen atom, which can coordinate with undercoordinated Pb2+ ions or NH3+ in perovskite crystals, developing smaller nanocrystalline grains with reduced defects. As a result, the PCF-passivated samples exhibit improved stability against moisture in a humid ambient environment (RH > 70%). Moreover, enhanced photoluminescence (PL) and lifetime were achieved without encapsulation. Furthermore, LEDs are demonstrated using the optimized PCF content. These results show the importance of resin polymers, which performs multiple functionalities such as nanocrystalline grain formation, defect passivation, and stability improvements for optoelectronic devices. Lead-free ternary metal halides, especially cesium copper halides, have attracted tremendous research interest in the past two years owing to their outstanding optical properties, such as long photoluminescence (PL) decay lifetimes and high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). Recently, single crystals of potassium and rubidium copper halides have shown potential use in optoelectronics, and several synthetic methods have been reported for A2CuX3 (A = K, Rb; X = Cl, Br) single crystals. Here, we have successfully synthesized A2CuX3 micro- and nanocrystals by both anti-solvent recrystallization and hot injection methods, achieving size and shape control of these materials for the first time. A2CuX3 micro- and nanocrystals show near-UV to deep blue emission, with emission peaks ranging from 380 to 400 nm. Emission properties included Stoke's shifts over 100 nm, a fwhm of approximately 50 nm, a long PL lifetime, and high PLQYs, in particular for K2CuCl3, which shows near unity PLQYs. In addition, these materials can be used to produce white light along with previously reported CsCu2I3 nanocrystals. A mixed solution of K2CuCl3 and CsCu2I3 nanocrystals exhibits white light emission with a Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) coordinate of (0.3456, 0.3304) and a color rendering index (CRI) of 75 at a color temperature of 4855 K. Various phosphonic acid based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been commonly used for interface modifications in inverted perovskite solar cells. This typically results in significant enhancement of the hole extraction and consequent increase in the power conversion efficiency. However, the surface coverage and packing density of SAM molecules can vary, depending on the chosen SAM material and underlying oxide layer. In addition, different SAM molecules have diverse effects on the interfacial energy level alignment and perovskite film growth, resulting in complex relationships between surface modification, efficiency, and lifetime. Here we show that ethanolamine surface modification combined with [2-(9 H -carbazol-9-yl)ethyl]phosphonic acid (2PACz) results in significant improvement in device stability compared to devices with 2PACz modification only. The significantly smaller size of ethanolamine enables it to fill any gaps in 2PACz coverage and provide improved interfacial defect passivation, while its different chemical structure enables it to provide complementary effects to 2PACz passivation. Consequently, the perovskite films are more stable under illumination (slower photoinduced segregation), and the devices exhibit significant stability enhancement. Despite similar power conversion efficiencies (PCE) between 2PACz only and combined ethanolamine-2PACz modification (PCE of champion devices ∼21.6-22.0% for rigid and ∼20.2-21.0% for flexible devices), the T 80 lifetime under simulated solar illumination in ambient is improved more than 15 times for both rigid and flexible devices.

AgBiS 2 nanocrystals are a promising nontoxic alternative to PbS, CsPbI 3 , and CdS quantum dots for solution-fabricated nanocrystal photovoltaics. In this work, we fabricated the first inverted (p-i-n) structure AgBiS 2 nanocrystal solar cells. We selected spray-coated NiO as the hole-transporting material and used PCBM/BCP as the electron-transporting material. Combining transient photocurrent and photovoltage measurements with femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, we investigated the charge collection process on metal oxide/AgBiS 2 interfaces and demonstrated that the NiO/AgBiS 2 NC junction in the p-i-n configuration is more efficient for charge carrier collection. The fabricated p-i-n solar cells exhibited a 4.3% power conversion efficiency (PCE), which was higher than that of conventional n-i-p solar cells fabricated using the same sample. Additionally, inverted devices showed an ultrahigh short-circuit current ( J SC ) over 20.7 mA cm -2 and 0.38 V open-circuit voltage ( V OC ), suggesting their potential for further improvements in efficiency and, eventually, for large-scale production.

We demonstrate all-perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) with white emission on the basis of simultaneously solving a couple of issues including the ion exchanges between different perovskites, solvent incompatibility in the solution process of stacking different perovskites and carrier transport layers, as well as the energy level matching between each layer in the whole device. The PeLEDs are built with a two-dimensional (CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 NH 3 ) 2 CsPb 2 I 7 perovskite that emits red light, CsPb(Br,Cl) 3 quantum dots that emit a cyan color, and an interlayer composed of bis(1-phenyl-1H-benzo[ d]imidazole)phenylphosphine oxide (BIPO) and poly(4-butylphenyl-diphenyl-amine) (Poly-TPD). The interlayer is designed to realize desirable white electroluminescence by tuning the electron and hole transportation and distribution in-between multilayers. With this PeLED configuration, we achieve the typical white light with chromaticity coordinates of (0.32, 0.32) in Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) 1931 color space diagram and steady CIE coordinates in a wide range of driving current densities (from 2.94 to 59.29 mA/cm 2 ). Consequently, our work, as the starting point for future research of all-perovskite white PeLEDs, will contribute to the future applications of PeLEDs in lighting and display. In addition, we believe that the proposed material and all-perovskite concept will leverage the design and development of more perovskite-based devices.

In this work, we report the application of the aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) as color converters for visible light communication (VLC). In the form of pure solid powder, the AIEgens studied herein have demonstrated blue-to-red full-color emissions, large -6 dB electrical modulation bandwidths up to 279 MHz (∼56× that of commercial phosphor), and most of them can achieve high data rates of 428-493 Mbps (up to ∼49× that of commercial phosphor) at a maximum bit error rate of 3.8 × 10 -3 using on-off keying. Their data communication performances strongly suggest that AIEgens are very promising candidates as color converters for VLC applications, together with their unique AIE properties that will benefit usage in high concentration. Based on the comprehensive experimental results, we further propose some insights into improving data rate of the color converter in VLC: the data rate limit is influenced by modulation bandwidth and signal-noise ratio (SNR). We have experimentally proved that the -6 dB electrical modulation bandwidth f c can be estimated from the effective lifetime τ of the color converter with the theoretical prediction of [Formula: see text] within experimental uncertainties, while theoretically derived that the SNR is proportional to its PL quantum efficiency. These observations and implications are very profound for exploring materials as color converters and improve the data transmission performance in VLC.

Far-red and near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent materials possessing the characteristics of strong two-photon absorption and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) as well as specific targeting capability are much-sought-after for bioimaging and therapeutic applications due to their deep penetration depth and high resolution. Herein, a series of dipolar far-red and NIR AIE luminogens with a strong push-pull effect are designed and synthesized. The obtained fluorophores display bright far-red and NIR solid-state fluorescence with a high quantum yield of up to 30%, large Stokes shifts of up to 244 nm, and large two-photon absorption cross-sections of up to 887 GM. A total of three neutral AIEgens show specific lipid droplet (LD)-targeting capability, while the one with cationic and lipophilic characteristics tends to target the mitochondria specifically. All of the molecules demonstrate good biocompatibility, high brightness, and superior photostability. They also serve as efficient two-photon fluorescence-imaging agents for the clear visualization of LDs or mitochondria in living cells and tissues with deep tissue penetration (up to 150 μm) and high contrast. These AIEgens can efficiently generate singlet oxygen upon light irradiation for the photodynamic ablation of cancer cells. All of these intriguing results prove that these far-red and NIR AIEgens are excellent candidates for the two-photon fluorescence imaging of LDs or mitochondria and organelle-targeting photodynamic cancer therapy.

Two advanced boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) based photosensitizers have been synthesized and characterized. With a glibenclamide analogous moiety, these compounds can localize in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of HeLa human cervical carcinoma cells and HepG2 human hepatocarcinoma cells. The BODIPY π skeleton is conjugated with two styryl or carbazolylethenyl groups, which can substantially red-shift the Q-band absorption and fluorescence emission and impart two-photon absorption (TPA) property to the chromophores. The TPA cross section of the carbazole-containing analogue reaches a value of 453 GM at 1010 nm. These compounds also behave as singlet oxygen generators with high photostability. Upon irradiation at λ > 610 nm, these photosensitizers cause photocytotoxicity to these two cell lines with IC 50 values down to 0.09 μM, for which the cell death is triggered mainly by ER stress. The two-photon photodynamic activity of the distyryl derivative upon excitation at λ = 800 nm has also been demonstrated.

π-Bonds connected with aromatic rings were generally believed as the standard structures for constructing highly efficient fluorophores. Materials without these typical structures, however, exhibited only low fluorescence quantum yields and emitted in the ultraviolet spectral region. In this work, three molecules, namely bis(2,4,5-trimethylphenyl)methane, 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(2,4,5-trimethylphenyl)ethane, and 1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethane, with nonconjugated structures and isolated phenyl rings were synthesized and their photophysical properties were systematically investigated. Interestingly, the emission spectra of these three molecules could be well extended to 600 nm with high solid-state quantum yields of up to 70%. Experimental and theoretical analyses proved that intramolecular through-space conjugation between the "isolated" phenyl rings played an important role for this abnormal phenomenon.

In this study, the concentration gradient inside evaporating binary sessile droplets of 30, 50, and 60 vol % tetrahydrofuran (THF)/water mixtures was investigated. The 5 μL THF/water droplets were evaporated on a transparent hydrophobic substrate. This is the first demonstration of local concentration mapping within an evaporating binary droplet utilizing the aggregation-induced emission material. During the first two evaporation stages of the binary droplet, the local concentration can be directly visualized by the change of fluorescence emission intensity. Time-resolved average and local concentrations can be estimated by using the pre-established function of fluorescence intensity versus water volume fraction.

Compared to the conventional perovskite solar cells (PSCs) containing hole-transport materials (HTM), carbon materials based HTM-free PSCs (C-PSCs) have often suffered from inferior power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) arising at least partially from the inefficient hole extraction at the perovskite-carbon interface. Here, we show that boron (B) doping of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (B-MWNTs) electrodes are superior in enabling enhanced hole extraction and transport by increasing work function, carrier concentration, and conductivity of MWNTs. The C-PSCs prepared using the B-MWNTs as the counter electrodes to extract and transport hole carriers have achieved remarkably higher performances than that with the undoped MWNTs, with the resulting PCE being considerably improved from 10.70% (average of 9.58%) to 14.60% (average of 13.70%). Significantly, these cells show negligible hysteretic behavior. Moreover, by coating a thin layer of insulating aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) on the mesoporous TiO 2 film as a physical barrier to substantially reduce the charge losses, the PCE has been further pushed to 15.23% (average 14.20%). Finally, the impressive durability and stability of the prepared C-PSCs were also testified under various conditions, including long-term air exposure, heat treatment, and high humidity.

Recently, researchers have focused on the design of highly efficient flexible perovskite solar cells (PVSCs), which enables the implementation of portable and roll-to-roll fabrication in large scale. While NiOx is a promising material for hole transport layer (HTL) candidate for fabricating efficient PVSCs on a rigid substrate, the reported NiOx HTLs are formed using different multistep treatments (such as 300-500 °C annealing, O2-plasma, UVO, etc.), which hinders the development of flexible PVSCs based on NiOx. Meanwhile, the features of nanostructured morphology and flawless film quality are very important for the film to function as highly effective HTL of PVSCs. However, it is difficult to have the two features coexist natively, particularly in a solution process that flawless film will usually come with smooth morphology. Here, we demonstrate the flawless and surface-nanostructured NiOx film from a simple and controllable room-temperature solution process for achieving high performance flexible PVSCs with good stability and reproducibility. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) can reaches a promising value of 14.53% with no obvious hysteresis (and a high PCE of 17.60% for PVSC on ITO glass). Furthermore, the NiOx-based PVSCs show markedly improved air stability. Regarding the performance improvement, the flawless and surface-nanostructured NiOx film can make the interfacial recombination and monomolecular Shockley-Read-Hall recombination of PVSC reduce. In addition, the formation of an intimate junction of large interfacial area at NiOx film/the perovskite layer improve the hole extraction and thus PVSC performances. This work contributes to the evolution of flexible PVSCs with simple fabrication process and high device performances.

Solar cells incorporating lead halide-based perovskite absorbers can exhibit impressive power conversion efficiencies (PCEs), recently surpassing 15%. Despite rapid developments, achieving precise control over the morphologies of the perovskite films (minimizing pore formation) and enhanced stability and reproducibility of the devices remain challenging, both of which are necessary for further advancements. Here we demonstrate vacuum-assisted thermal annealing as an effective means for controlling the composition and morphology of the CH(3)NH(3)PbI(3) films formed from the precursors of PbCl(2) and CH(3)NH(3)I. We identify the critical role played by the byproduct of CH(3)NH(3)Cl on the formation and the photovoltaic performance of the perovskite film. By completely removing the byproduct through our vacuum-assisted thermal annealing approach, we are able to produce pure, pore-free planar CH(3)NH(3)PbI(3) films with high PCE reaching 14.5% in solar cell device. Importantly, the removal of CH(3)NH(3)Cl significantly improves the device stability and reproducibility with a standard deviation of only 0.92% in PCE as well as strongly reducing the photocurrent hysteresis.

We have devised dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with >6% efficiency by employing composite photoanodes of SnO(2) nanoparticles/ZnO nanotetrapods. Benefiting from material advantages of both constituents, the composite photoanodes exhibit extremely large roughness factors, good charge collection, and tunable light scattering properties. Among the three composite photoanodes with widely differing compositions tested, the best performance (efficiency = 6.31%) was obtained with a weight ratio of SnO(2)/ZnO 2:1 mainly due to the highest saturated J(sc) achieved at a thinnest film thickness. Charge collection losses in composite films with more ZnO nanotetrapods content and thus necessarily larger film thicknesses appear to be a main limiting factor on IPCE and therefore J(sc), which undermines the gain from their favorable light scattering ability. An ultrathin layer of ZnO spontaneously shelled on SnO(2) nanoparticles is found to enhance V(oc) primarily by lifting the band edges rather than by suppressing recombination. Finally, by intensity modulated photocurrent/photovoltage spectroscopy (IMPS/IMVS), we have identified that recombination in SnO(2)/ZnO composite films is mainly determined by the ZnO shell condition on SnO(2), whereas electron transport is greatly influenced by the morphologies and sizes of the ZnO crystalline additives. In particular, ZnO nanotetrapods have proved to be superior in electron transport and therefore charge collection over ZnO particles additives in the SnO(2)/ZnO composite-based DSSCs.

A chiral pyran derivative containing two cholesteryl groups (1) is synthesized, and its optical properties are investigated. Whereas the isolated molecule of 1 is virtually nonluminescent in dilute solutions, it becomes highly emissive with a 2 orders of magnitude increase in fluorescence quantum yield upon aggregation in poor solvents or in solid state, showing a novel phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The color and efficiency of the AIE of 1 can be tuned by varying the morphology of its aggregates: photoluminescence of its aggregates formed in a tetrahydrofuran/water mixture progressively red-shifts (green --> yellow --> red) with increasing water content of the mixture, with the crystalline aggregates emitting bluer lights in higher efficiencies than their amorphous counterparts.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes are covalently functionalized by conjugated polyacetylenes through their cyclization reactions with poly(1-phenyl-1-alkyne) and poly(diphenylacetylene) derivatives carrying azido functional groups at the ends of their alkyl pendants. The resultant polyene nanotube addends are soluble in common solvents, emit intense visible lights and strongly attenuate the power of harsh laser pulses.

In situ growth of ZnO nanobelt arrays from and on zinc substrates (foils and microparticles) has been accomplished by controlled thermal oxidation in the presence of oxygen. The nanobelts grow approximately perpendicular to the Zn substrate surface along the 110 direction of ZnO, which has a thickness of approximately 3-4 nm, a width tapering from about 50 to 300 nm, and a length of approximately 10-20 mum. On the basis of the structural analysis and kinetic studies, a tip-growth mechanism is proposed, which underlines the transport of Zn from the substrate to the growing tip. The ratio of UV to green photoluminescent emissions of the as-synthesized ZnO nanobelt arrays could be controlled by varying the reaction conditions. Sharp UV stimulated emission peak is also observed at moderate threshold excitation intensity ( approximately 0.7 mJ/cm(2)) showing the high quality of the ZnO nanobelts. The ZnO nanobelts array has also been tested for sensing NH(3) gas, and high sensitivity, reversibility, and rapid response have been demonstrated.

The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties of 1,1,2,3,4,5-hexaphenylsilole (HPS) and poly{11-[(1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenylsilolyl)oxy]-1-phenyl-1-undecyne} (PS9PA) were studied by time-resolved fluorescence technique. The enhanced fluorescence and long fluorescent lifetime were obtained for the sample in an aggregate state as compared to the sample in solution. The time-decay of fluorescence of HPS and PS9PA in high viscosity solvents and low-temperature glasses has also been measured in detail to further investigate the possible mechanism for AIE. Enhanced light emission and long fluorescence lifetime were detected for both HPS and PS9PA in the solution-thickening and -cooling experiments. These results provided direct evidence that the enhanced photoluminescence (PL) efficiency is due to restricted intramolecular motion, which ascribes AIE to the deactivation of nonradiative decay caused by restricted torsional motions of the molecules in the solid state or aggregate form.
