Abstract

Dimethylammonium magnesium formate, [ ( C H 3 ) 2 N H 2 ][Mg(HCOO)3] or DMAMgF, is a model used to study high temperature hybrid perovskite-like dielectrics. This compound displays an order–disorder phase transition at about 260 K. Using multifrequency electron spin resonance in continuous wave and pulsed modes, we herein present the quantum dynamics of the Mn2+ ion probe in DMAMgF. In the high temperature paraelectric phase, we observe a large distribution of the zero field splitting that is attributed to the high local disorder and further supported by density functional theory computations. In the low temperature ferroelastic phase, a single structure phase is detected and shown to contain two magnetic structures. The complex electron paramagnetic resonance signals were identified by means of the Rabi oscillation method combined with the crystal field kernel density estimation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The similarities of quantum turbulence with classical hydrodynamics allow quantum fluids to provide essential models of their classical analog, paving the way for fundamental advances in physics and technology. Recently, experiments on 2D quantum turbulence observed the clustering of same-sign vortices in strong analogy with the inverse energy cascade of classical fluids. However, self-similarity of the turbulent flow, a fundamental concept in the study of classical turbulence, has so far remained largely unexplored in quantum systems. Here, thanks to the unique features of exciton–polaritons, we measure the scale invariance of velocity circulations and show that the cascade process follows the universal scaling of critical phenomena in 2D. We demonstrate this behavior from the statistical analysis of the experimentally measured incompressible velocity field and the microscopic imaging of the quantum fluid. Abstract

Liquid metal drops are released onto different wettable solid substrates. Their post-impact oscillations are recorded at 1000 images/s as soon as the triple line is at rest. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is used to get and identify the frequencies involved. The POD is a technique widely used in the fluid dynamics community to study turbulent flows, but it is not used to determine droplet-free oscillation frequencies. The vertical and horizontal vibration frequencies of the sessile drop center of mass are successfully extracted from the images by POD. The first POD mode captures the vertical displacement frequency, and the second or third POD mode captures the horizontal displacement frequency of the drop center of mass. The spatial structure of the modes is the characteristic of the vertical and horizontal movement. Therefore, the POD can be used instead of the interface displacement tracking to determine the free oscillation frequencies of liquid metal drops and, more generally, of any vibrating sessile drops. Abstract

We present a study of the structural and optical properties of a heterostructure emitting in the midinfrared. The structure consists of monolayerlike InSb quantum wells inserted in an InAs/GaSb superlattice (SL) matrix. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses show a high structural quality of the structure. A strong emission line with a peak energy near 0.30 eV (3.5 μm) is observed from the monolayerlike InSb. In order to identify the physical origin of this transition, excitation density and temperature dependent photoluminescence experiments have been performed on samples with different nominal InSb thicknesses and SL designs. The experimental results suggest a type II band alignment, with electrons localized in the conduction miniband of the InAs/GaSb SL matrix and holes localized in the monolayerlike InSb. This assignment is supported by the shift of InSb layer emission to lower energies when the SL design is changed, and by tight-binding calculations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Optical emission spectroscopic investigations of the plasma produced during KrF excimer laser ablation of Zn and ZnO targets, in vacuum and in oxygen gas environment, are presented. The plume luminescence is mainly due to Zn excited atoms and ions, but the contribution of atomic and molecular oxygen, as well as of particulates, cannot be neglected. In particular, we detect emissions in the spectral regions around 380 and 530 nm, corresponding to the UV and green photo-luminescence bands of the zinc oxide. Moreover, we study the temporal evolution of atomic and ionic ejected species by space- and time-resolved spectroscopy and analyze the results by means of empirical models, in order to infer information about plasma dynamics. Abstract

A quantum dot (QD) microcavity emitting around 1.3 μm at room temperature is studied by photoreflectance (PR) and photoluminescence. The temperature dependence of the PR spectra line shape and amplitude allows determining the tuning condition of the quantum dot ground state transition with the cavity mode. Our study suggests a way to find the exciton energy when the distinct QD features are hidden by the broadening of the QD dielectric function in combination with the relatively narrow cavity-mode width. Abstract

We have studied the optical properties of different thienyl-S,S-dioxide oligothiophenes under strong excitation. No stimulated emission is observed in neat films due to singlet-singlet bimolecular annihilation. The bimolecular recombination constant is quantified from a rate equation model in the limit of constant annihilation rate. We demonstrate that tunable stimulated emission in the range 490–660 nm, due to optical gain with an estimated cross section of the order of σg≈10-17 cm2, can be obtained by blending the active molecule with small quantities of inert polycarbonate poly(bisphenol-A-carbonate) (PC). The presence of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) for a PC:active molecule relative concentration as small as 1:500 suggests that the polycarbonate role is to reduce the intermolecular diffusion rate rather than to isolate the active molecules. Moreover, for higher PC content, a continuous decrease of the bimolecular quenching role is observed. These results demonstrate that the absence of stimulated emission in neat films is not necessarily due to intrinsic molecular properties, as strong ASE can be obtained by slightly modifying the molecule interaction during the deposition process. This approach could allow a considerable extension of the number of molecules showing stimulated emission for organic laser applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present a study of the decays B0→Ds*+D*-, using 20.8 fb-1 of e+e- annihilation data recorded with the BABAR detector. The analysis is conducted with a partial reconstruction technique, in which only the D(*)+ and the soft pion from the D*- decay are reconstructed. We measure the branching fractions γ(B0 →Ds+D*-)= (1.03±0.14±0.13±0.26)% and ß(B0→Ds *+D*-)= (1.97±0.15±0.30±0.49)%, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is the error due to the Ds+→φπ+ branching fraction uncertainty. From the B0→Ds*+D*- angular distributions, we measure the fraction of longitudinal polarization ΓL/Γ=(51.9±5.0±2.8)%, which is consistent with theoretical predictions based on factorization.

The authors report a detailed investigation of the structural and optical properties of vertically stacked InAs quantum dots embedded in an (In,Ga)As quantum well by means of transmission electron microscopy and time resolved photoluminescence based on the upconversion technique. By comparing the optical features of quantum dot samples of different barrier thicknesses (nominal values between 5 and 65 nm), they have found evidence for electronic coupling among the quantum dots, featured by an increase of radiative lifetime and a relatively blueshifted emission peak for the thinnest spacer layer sample. Abstract

We experimentally study drops formed from a nozzle into an immiscible, cross-flowing phase. Depending on the operating conditions, drops are generated either in dripping or jetting mode. We investigate the impact of the continuous and dispersed phase velocities, dispersed phase viscosity, and interfacial tension on the drop generation mode and size. We find that a dripping to jetting transition (DJT) takes place at a critical innerWeber number, a function of the outer capillary and Ohnesorge numbers. Two jetting regimes occur depending on the phase velocity ratio. When the continuous phase velocity is significantly greater (respectively lower) than the dispersed phase velocity, jet narrowing (respectively widening) occurs. In jet widening, the critical innerWeber number depends little on the outer capillary number whereas in jet narrowing, it sharply decreases as the outer capillary number increases. We propose a comprehensive model to describe the DJT based on the attached drop equation of motion. The model satisfactorily predicts the DJT and the effect of the outer capillary number on the critical inner Weber number. It also well accounts for the drop diameter in jet narrowing. Abstract

Drop generation from an axially vibrating nozzle exhibits a transition in drop diameter when varying the vibration amplitude. Below a threshold amplitude, forcing has essentially no effect on drop size and drops form in dripping mode. Above the threshold, drop size is controlled by forcing: drops detach at resonance, i.e., when the first eigenfrequency of the growing drop coincides with the forcing frequency. We experimentally study the impact of the nozzle inner diameter, dispersed phase flow rate, interfacial tension, and dispersed phase viscosity on this transition. Drop diameter is well correlated to the mode 1 eigenfrequency of Strani and Sabetta for a drop in partial contact with a spherical bowl. We propose a transient model to describe drop dynamics until detachment. The drop is modelled as a linearly forced harmonic oscillator, with the eigenfrequency of Strani and Sabetta. Since the dispersed phase does not wet the nozzle tip, an additional damping coefficient is introduced to account for the viscous dissipation in the film of continuous phase between the drop and nozzle surface. Abstract

We describe the operation of a silicon optical nanocrystal memory device. The programmed logic state of the device is read optically by the detection of high or low photoluminescence intensity. The suppression of excitonic photoluminescence is attributed to the onset of fast nonradiative Auger recombination in the presence of an excess charge carrier. The device can be programmed and erased electrically via charge injection and optically via internal photoemission. Photoluminescence suppression of up to 80% is demonstrated with data retention times of up to several minutes at room temperature.

Abstract

In-plane absorption measurements were performed at room temperature by means of a waveguide transmission setup on a Stranski–Krastanov InAs dots-in-a-well system emitting at 1.3 μm embedded in a p-i-n structure. The polarization dependence of quantum dot (QD) absorption was exploited to resolve its discrete and continuous spectral components and study them separately under reverse bias application. The quantum confined Stark effect observed in the discrete spectral component gave evidence of an upward built-in QD dipole of about 9.5×10-29 C m. Abstract

We report the results of an extensive optical investigation by continuous-wave and time resolved photoluminescence experiments on double GaInAsSb/AlGaAsSb quantum wells emitting at 2.3 μm at room temperature. We have found that, at low temperature (<70 K), the recombination is dominated by excitons trapped in disorder and interface defects. Whereas, at higher temperature, free-exciton recombination occurs. The authors have performed time resolved photoluminescence measurements by upconversion technique on InAs quantum dots embedded in an InGaAs/GaAs quantum well emitting at 1.3 μm at room temperature. A detailed analysis of the photoluminescence transients as a function of the excitation density and for different detection energies between the quantum dot transitions and the GaAs absorption edge shows that the intradot relaxation is slower than the direct carrier capture from the barrier states through a continuum background relaxation. Abstract

We investigate the optical properties of quantum-dot (QD) microcavity light-emitting diodes (MCLED) operating at 1.3 μm at room temperature. The active medium consists of a single layer of InGaAs quantum dots, directly grown in a GaAs matrix by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. Electrical injected QD MCLEDs were fabricated by exploiting a hybrid technology, which employs epitaxial and oxide-based mirrors. Such technology allows us to preserve the QD properties and leads to a wider optical bandwidth of the hybrid top distributed Bragg reflector with respect to the fully epitaxial mirror, resulting in photon recycling of the overall QDs spectrum, thus improving the efficiency of the device. The devices exhibit bright electroluminescence peaked at 1.29 μm, with a full width at half maximum of 10 meV. The room-temperature external quantum efficiency of such devices is 0.52%, higher than that reported in the literature for QD MCLEDs operating at 1.3 μm at room temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We investigate the optical properties of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) operating at 1.3 μm embedding, in the intrinsic region, quantum dots (QDs) directly grown by metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition in a GaAs matrix, without indium in the barrier. The device characterization shows a full width at half maximum of the ground state emission as narrow as 24 meV at room temperature and a quenching of the emission between 30 K and room temperature as low as 2.75. Despite the low dot density (1.6×109 cm-2), the external quantum efficiency of our devices is 0.03%. Abstract

We demonstrate a method to obtain room temperature long wavelength emission from InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) growth directly into a binary GaAs matrix. The wavelength is tuned from 1.26 up to 1.33 μm by varying the V/III ratio during growth of the GaAs cap layer, without using a seeding layer or InGaAs wells. Strong improvement in terms of line-shape narrowing and efficiency is obtained. In addition to the shift in wavelength we observe an impressive reduction of temperature dependent quenching of the emission efficiency, which decreases only by a factor of 3 between cryogenic temperatures and room temperature, very good for QD structures emitting at 1.3 μm. We have studied the radiative and structural properties of identical In[sub x]Ga[sub (1-x)]As quantum dot laser structures grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Despite the comparable emission properties found in the two devices by photoluminescence, electroluminescence, and photocurrent spectroscopy, efficient lasing from the ground state is achieved only in the MBE sample, whereas excited state lasing is obtained in the MOCVD device. Such a difference is ascribed to the existence of the internal dipole field in the MOCVD structure, induced by the strong faceting of the dots, as observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Abstract

We investigate the ultrafast carrier dynamics in metalorganic chemical vapor deposition-grown InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots emitting at 1.3 µm. Time-resolved photoluminescence upconversion measurements show that the carriers photoexcited in the barriers relax to the quantum-dot ground state within a few picoseconds. At low temperatures and high carrier densities, the relaxation dynamics is dominated by carrier-carrier scattering. In contrast, at room temperature, the dominant relaxation process for electrons is scattering between quantum-dot levels via multiple longitudinal optical (LO)-phonon emission. The reverse process, i.e., multiple LO-phonon absorption, governs the thermal re-emission of electrons from the quantum-dot ground state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work we report the time dependence emission properties of photoexcited carriers in CdTe tetrapod nanocrystals, by using time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. The emission dynamics of the ground and excited state of a tetrapod-structure have pointed out different temporal behaviours ascribed to different carrier relaxation mechanisms. By monitoring the transient emission spectra at different delay times, a remarkable change in the energy position of the lower energy state has been observed, attributable to a photoinduced screening of an internal electric field, originating, in turn, from the ground state charge separation. Abstract

In this contribution we present temperature and size dependence of the non radiative relaxation and exciton-phonon coupling in colloidal CdTe Quantum Dots (QDs). PL measurements as a function of the temperature show that the main non radiative process which limits the quantum efficiency at room temperature is the thermal escape, assisted by multiple LO phonons absorption. The number of phonons involved in the thermal escape and the exciton-phonon coupling strongly depend on the QDs size. In particular, the coupling constant with the acoustical phonons is strongly enhanced in QDs with respect to CdTe quantum well systems and bulk CdTe. Abstract

We report the observation of 823±57 B0 and 970±65 B+ decays to doubly charmed final states D̄ (*)D(*)K, where D̄(*) and D(*) are fully reconstructed and K is either a K ± or a K0. We use a sample of 82.3 ±0.9 million B B̄ events collected between 1999 and 2002 with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The 22 ossible B decays to D̄(*)D(*)K are reconstructed exclusively and the corresponding branching fractions or limits are determined. The branching fractions of the B0 and of the B + to D̄(*)D(*)K are found to be Β(B0→D̄(*)D(*)K) = [4.3±0.3(stat)±0.6(syst)]%, Β(B+→D̄ (*)D(*)K) = [3.5±0.3(stat)±0. 5(syst)]%.A search for decays to orbitally excited Ds states, B→D̄(*)DsJ +(DsJ +→D(*)0K+), is also performed. No statistically significant-contributions from Ds1 +(2536) →D*0K+ and DsJ +(2573) →D0K+ to the D̄(*)D (*)0K+ final state are found and we set 90% C.L. limits on their production rates.
