Living cells on a substrate with mechanical inhomogeneities often migrate along or against the mechanical gradient, i.e., mechanotaxis, which inspires us to ask how biomimetic cells without biochemical signaling processes respond to environmental inhomogeneity. Here, we perform computer simulations to study the migration of a 2D active colloidal cell (ACC), which consists of active particles enclosed by a passive vesicle, in a heterogeneous environment composed of two adjoining uniform regions with different attributes (influencing the persistent length of the active particle). We find that the ACC can migrate unidirectionally across the interface separating the heterogeneous region and behave tactically. Interestingly, the tactic motion of the ACC is qualitatively different from that of the constituent active particles themselves. In addition, the ACC may also experience a directed drift along the interface of the heterogeneous environment. The tactic behavior of the ACC can be explained by analyzing the pressure distribution on the cell membrane exerted by the enclosed active particles. We became aware that a relevant Ref. [1] (namely, Ref. 63 in the article[2]) was omitted from the result part "ACC filled with linear active Brownian particles" of the article (specifically, in the last paragraph of the right column on p. 7), although it was cited in another place (in the first paragraph of the right column on p. 5). In its conclusion part, the authors suggested that active bodies inside a container moving in a gradient of activity can give rise to chemotactic motion of the container, which is similar to a special case among our many systems, i.e., the ACC filled with linear active Brownian particles in the inhomogeneous self-propelled force environment. Drift velocity and driving force are not directly proportional in the case of inhomogeneous suspensions, where a space dependent mobility induces an additional contribution to the drift velocity. Similarly, particle flux and drift velocity are related not only by the gradient of density but also by an additional contribution given by the gradient of the self-diffusion coefficient. We provide quantitative support to this scenario in a non-equilibrium system by means of computer simulations with a temperature gradient. Moreover, our simulation results demonstrate that the temperature gradient-induced mass transport coefficient, namely thermal diffusion coefficient, is not directly proportional to the drift velocity so that the well-accepted relation of proportionality is just an approximation. Chemical gradients maintained along surfaces can drive fluid flows by diffusio-osmosis, which become significant at micro- and nano-scales. Here, by means of mesoscopic simulations, we show that a concentration drop across microchannels with periodically inhomogeneous boundary walls can laterally transport fluids over arbitrarily long distances along the microchannel. The driving field is the secondary local chemical gradient parallel to the channel induced by the periodic inhomogeneity of the channel wall. The flow velocity depends on the concentration drop across the channel and the structure and composition of the channel walls, but it is independent of the overall channel length. Our work thus presents new insight into the fluid transport in long microchannels commonly found in nature and is useful for designing novel micro- or nano-fluidic pumps.

An asymmetric gear with homogeneous surface properties is, here, presented as a prototype to fabricate catalytic microrotors. The driving torque arises from the diffusiophoretic effect induced by the concentration gradients generated by catalytic chemical reactions at the gear surface. This torque produces a spontaneous and unidirectional rotation of the asymmetric gear. By means of mesoscopic simulations, we prove and characterize this scenario. The gear rotational velocity is determined by the gear-solvent interactions, the gear geometry, the solvent viscosity, and the catalytic reaction ratio. Our work presents a simple way to design self-propelled microrotors, alternative to existing catalytic bi-component, or thermophoretic ones.

The solid-solid coexistence of a polydisperse hard sphere system is studied by using the Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that for large enough polydispersity the solid-solid coexistence state is more stable than the single-phase solid. The two coexisting solids have different composition distributions but the same crystal structure. Moreover, there is evidence that the solid-solid transition terminates in a critical point as in the case of the fluid-fluid transition.

By extending the nonequilibrium potential refinement algorithm and lattice switch method to the semigrand ensemble, the semigrand potentials of the fcc and hcp structures of polydisperse hard-sphere crystals are calculated with the bias sampling scheme. The result shows that the fcc structure is more stable than the hcp structure for polydisperse hard-sphere crystals below the terminal polydispersity.
