We report the experimental observation of the spin-wave moiré edge and cavity modes using Brillouin light scattering spectromicroscopy in a nanostructured magnetic moiré lattice consisting of two twisted triangle antidot lattices based on an yttrium iron garnet thin film. Spin-wave moiré edge modes are detected at an optimal twist angle and with a selective excitation frequency. At a given twist angle, the magnetic field acts as an additional degree of freedom for tuning the chiral behavior of the magnon edge modes. Micromagnetic simulations indicate that the edge modes emerge within the original magnonic band gap and at the intersection between a mini flatband and a propagation magnon branch. Our theoretical estimate for the Berry curvature of the magnon-magnon coupling suggests a nontrivial topology for the chiral edge modes and confirms the key role played by the dipolar interaction. Our findings shed light on the topological nature of the magnon edge mode for emergent moiré magnonics.

The influence of spin-Hall-effect spin torque (SHE-ST) induced by in-plane charge current was studied in microscale Ta/Co20Fe60B20/TaOx films with perpendicular magnetization. Simultaneous electrical transport and polar magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) imaging experiments were used to investigate the switching dynamics. A rich set of switching behaviors was observed, which can be well understood by analyzing a switching-phase diagram and polar MOKE images, considering the competition between SHE-ST and the externally applied magnetic field. Furthermore, we found that domain walls with a particular chirality were dominant in our devices, which suggests the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the present material system. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) at the heavy metal (HM) and ferromagnetic metal (FM) interface has been recognized as a key ingredient in spintronic applications. Here we investigate the chemical trend of DMI on the 5d band filling (5d³-5d10) of the HM element in HM/FM (FM=CoFeB,Co)/MgO multilayer thin films. DMI is quantitatively evaluated by measuring asymmetric spin wave dispersion using Brillouin light scattering. Sign reversal and 20 times modification of the DMI coefficient D have been measured as the 5d HM element is varied. The chemical trend can be qualitatively understood by considering the 5d and 3d bands alignment at the HM/FM interface and the subsequent orbital hybridization around the Fermi level. Furthermore, a correlation is observed between DMI and effective spin mixing conductance at the HM/FM interfaces. The antiferromagnet- (AFM-)ferromagnet (FM) interfaces are of central importance in recently developed pure electric or ultrafast control of FM spins, where the underlying mechanisms remain unresolved. Here we report the direct observation of an Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) across the AFM-FM interface of IrMn/CoFeB thin films. The interfacial DMI is quantitatively measured from the asymmetric spin-wave dispersion in the FM layer using Brillouin light scattering. The DMI strength is enhanced by a factor of 7 with increasing IrMn layer thickness in the range of 1-7.5 nm. Our findings provide deeper insight into the coupling at the AFM-FM interface and may stimulate new device concepts utilizing chiral spin textures such as magnetic Skyrmions in AFM-FM heterostructures. Electrical currents in a magnetic-insulator/heavy-metal heterostructure can induce two simultaneous effects, namely, spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) on the heavy-metal side and spin-orbit torques (SOTs) on the magnetic-insulator side. Within the framework of a pure spin current model based on the bulk spin Hall effect (SHE), the ratio of the spin Hall-induced anomalous Hall effect (SH-AHE) to SMR should be equal to the ratio of the fieldlike torque (FLT) to the dampinglike torque (DLT). We perform a quantitative study of SMR, SH-AHE, and SOTs in a series of thulium iron garnet/platinum or Tm3Fe5O12/Pt heterostructures with different Tm3Fe5O12 thicknesses, where Tm3Fe5O12 is a ferrimagnetic insulator with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We find the ratio between the measured effective fields of FLT and DLT is at least two times larger than the ratio of the SH-AHE to SMR. In addition, the bulk SHE model grossly underestimates the spin-torque efficiency of FLT. Our results reveal deficiencies of the bulk SHE model and also address the importance of interfacial effects such as the Rashba and magnetic proximity effects in magnetic-insulator/heavy-metal heterostructures. The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in ultrathin magnetic thin film heterostructures provides a new approach for controlling spin textures on mesoscopic length scales. Here we investigate the dependence of the interfacial DMI constant D on a Pt wedge insertion layer in Ta/CoFeB/Pt(wedge)/MgO thin films by observing the asymmetric spin-wave dispersion using Brillouin light scattering. Continuous tuning of D by more than a factor of 3 is realized by inserting less than one monolayer of Pt. The observations provide new insights for designing magnetic thin film heterostructures with tailored D for controlling skyrmions and magnetic domain-wall chirality and dynamics. We theoretically study equilibrium and dynamic properties of nanosized magnetic skyrmions in thin magnetic films with broken inversion symmetry, where an electric field couples to magnetization via spin-orbit coupling. Based on a symmetry-based phenomenology and micromagnetic simulations we show that this electric-field coupling, via renormalizing the micromagnetic energy, modifies the equilibrium properties of the skyrmion. This change, in turn, results in a significant alteration of the current-induced skyrmion motion. Particularly, the speed and direction of the skyrmion can be manipulated by designing a desired energy landscape electrically, which we describe within Thiele's analytical model and demonstrate in micromagnetic simulations including electric-field-controlled magnetic anisotropy. We additionally use this electric-field control to construct gates for controlling skyrmion motion exhibiting a transistorlike and multiplexerlike function. The proposed electric-field effect can thus provide a low-energy electrical knob to extend the reach of information processing with skyrmions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A three-dimensional singular point that consists of two oppositely aligned emergent monopoles is identified in continuous CoTb thin films, as confirmed by complementary techniques of resonant elastic x-ray scattering, Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, and scanning transmission x-ray microscopy. This new type of topological defect can be regarded as a superposition of an emergent magnetic monopole and an antimonopole, around which the source and drain of the magnetic flux overlap in space. We experimentally prove that the observed spin twist seen in Lorentz transmission electron microscopy reveals the cross section of the superimposed three-dimensional structure, providing a straightforward strategy for the observation of magnetic singularities. A chiral bobber is a localized three-dimensional magnetization configuration, terminated by a singularity. Chiral bobbers coexist with magnetic skyrmions in chiral magnets, lending themselves to new types of skyrmion-complementary bits of information. However, the on-demand creation of bobbers, as well as their direct observation remained elusive. Here, we introduce a new mechanism for creating a stable chiral bobber lattice state via the proximity of two skyrmion species with comparable size. This effect is experimentally demonstrated in a Cu2OSeO3/[Ta/CoFeB/MgO]4 heterostructure in which an exotic bobber lattice state emerges in the phase diagram of Cu2OSeO3. To unambiguously reveal the existence of the chiral bobber lattice state, we have developed a novel characterization technique, magnetic truncation rod analysis, which is based on resonant elastic x-ray scattering. Noninteracting particles exhibiting Brownian motion have been observed in many occasions of sciences, such as molecules suspended in liquids, optically trapped microbeads, and spin textures in magnetic materials. In particular, a detailed examination of Brownian motion of spin textures is important for designing thermally stable spintronic devices, which motivates the present study. In this Letter, through using temporally and spatially resolved polar magneto-optic Kerr effect microscopy, we have experimentally observed the thermal fluctuation-induced random walk of a single isolated Néel-type magnetic skyrmion in an interfacially asymmetric Ta/CoFeB/TaOx multilayer. An intriguing topology-dependent Brownian gyromotion behavior of skyrmions has been identified. The onset of Brownian gyromotion of a single skyrmion induced by thermal effects, including a nonlinear temperature-dependent diffusion coefficient and topology-dependent gyromotion are further formulated based on the stochastic Thiele equation. The experimental and numerical demonstration of topology-dependent Brownian gyromotion of skyrmions can be useful for understanding the nonequilibrium magnetization dynamics and implementing spintronic devices. Magnetism in topological insulators (TIs) opens a topologically nontrivial exchange band gap, providing an exciting platform for manipulating the topological order through an external magnetic field. Here, we show that the surface of an antiferromagnetic thin film can magnetize the top and the bottom TI surface states through interfacial couplings. During the magnetization reversal, intermediate spin configurations are ascribed from unsynchronized magnetic switchings. This unsynchronized switching develops antisymmetric magnetoresistance spikes during magnetization reversals, which might originate from a series of topological transitions. With the high Néel ordering temperature provided by the antiferromagnetic layers, the signature of the induced topological transition persists up to ~90 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
