Executives of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch decided to turn the paper's lagging Saturday broadsheet into a tabloid to boost sales. The approach met board resistance but finally prevailed. Research by Urban & Associates Consultant Chris Urban found that the best prospects for additional Saturday readers were Sunday-only readers who did not have time to take the paper seven days a week, and sports fans.

Pulitzer Publishing Co. has appointed Cole C. Campbell as the managing editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper. The former editor of the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot has a reputation for supporting public journalism and has a collaborative approach to management. Campbell has to reverse dwindling readership and sagging single-copy sales at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and must earn the loyalty and respect of the newspaper staff in order to succeed. The paper has daily circulation of approximately 316,000.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch is undergoing management changes, mainly due to an independent survey conducted by Synectics. The survey revealed that in order to develop an effective long-term strategy, serious changes would have to be made in the newspaper's management, because many employees felt that creative and innovative ideas were not being sought or valued by management. As a result, managing editor Foster S. Davis resigned in Mar 1996, long-time editor William Woo will be replaced, and other management changes will occur.

The Pulitzer Publishing Co, which owns the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, has formed a new wholly owned subsidiary Pulitzer Sports II, which acquired a minority interest in the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. Editor William F. Woo was the only staff member to be aware of the acquisition and managing editor Foster Davis thought the plan was an excellent idea.
