Millimeter waves are electromagnetic waves with wavelengths of 1–10 mm, which have characteristics of high frequency and short wavelength. They have gradually and widely been used in engineering and medical fields. We have identified studies related to millimeter waves in the biomedical field and summarized the biological effects of millimeter waves and their current status in medical applications. Finally, the shortcomings of existing studies and future developments were analyzed and discussed, with the aim of providing a reference for further research and development of millimeter waves in the medical field.

Traditional water purification methods are increasingly inadequate, leading to the exploration of novel approaches. This study investigated the application of plant-derived nanomaterials for heterogeneous photocatalytic water treatment using ZnO-Vernonia amygdalina nanoparticles (ZVAN). The study evaluated the efficacy of ZVAN in purifying Asa River water (ARW) and assessed its toxicological profile in rats. Synthesized ZVAN was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). ARW samples were collected according to standard guidelines and their physicochemical and bacteriological properties were analyzed. ARW was treated with ZVAN and alum separately. The effects of both treatments on various hematological, liver, and kidney parameters in albino rats were compared after 30 days of daily administration. The total suspended matter (TSM) levels in untreated and treated ARW exceeded approved standards. ZVAN treatment effectively eliminated cadmium (Cd) from the water (from 0.1 ppm to 0). Thermotolerant coliforms and enteric bacteria were also undetectable in ZVAN-treated samples. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has recently attracted significant attention as a health-promoting compound. CLA is a group of positional isomers of linoleic acid (LA) with a conjugated double bond naturally occurring in dairy and ruminant meat products. Microbial biosynthesis of CLA is a practical approach for commercial production due to its high safety and purity. There are some factors for the microbial CLA production such as strain type, microbial growth phase, pH, temperature and incubation time, based on which the amount and type of CLA can be controlled. Understanding the interplay of these factors is essential in optimizing the quantity and composition of microbial CLA, as discussed in the current study. Further exploration of CLA and its influences on human health remains a dynamic and evolving area of study.

Background and purpose: Magnetic field effects on the radiobiological effectiveness during treatment of magnetic resonance (MRI) guided particle therapy are being debated. This study aims at assessing the influence of a perpendicular magnetic field on the biological effects in two human cancer cell lines irradiated with proton or carbon ions. Methods and materials: In vitro cell irradiations were performed in water inside a perpendicular magnetic field of 0 and 1 T for both protons and carbon ions. Samples were located in the center of a spread-out Bragg peak at 8 cm water equivalent depth with a dose averaged linear energy transfer (LETd) of 4.2 or 83.4 keV/μm for protons and carbon ions, respectively. Physical dose levels of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 6 Gy were employed. The irradiation field was shifted and laterally enlarged, to compensate for the beam deflection due to the magnetic field and ensure consistent and homogenous irradiations of the flasks. The human cancer cell lines SKMel (Melanoma) and SW1353 (chondrosarcoma) were selected which represent a high and a low (α/β)x ratio cell type. Cell survival curves were generated applying a linear-quadratic curve fit. DNA damage and DNA damage clearance were assessed via γH2AX foci quantification at 1 and 24 h post radiation treatment. Results: Without a magnetic field, RBE10 values of 1.04 ± 0.03 (SW1353) and 1.51 ± 0.06 (SKMel) as well as RBE80 values of 0.93 ± 0.15 (SW1353) and 2.28 ± 0.40 (SKMel) were calculated for protons. Carbon treatments yielded RBE10 values of 1.68 ± 0.04 (SW1353) and 2.30 ± 0.07 (SKMel) and RBE80 values of 2.19 ± 0.24 (SW1353) and 4.06 ± 0.33 (SKMel). For a field strength of B = 1 T, RBE10 values of 1.06 ± 0.03 (SW1353) and 1.47 ± 0.06 (SKMel) resulted from protons, while RBE10 values of 1.70 ± 0.05 (SW1353) and 2.37 ± 0.08 (SKMel) were obtained for carbon ions. RBE80 values were calculated to be 1.06 ± 0.12 (SW1353) and 2.33 ± 0.40 (SKMel) following protons and 2.13 ± 0.25 (SW1353) and 4.29 ± 0.35 (SKMel) following carbon treatments. Substantially increased γH2AX foci per nucleus were found in both cell lines 1 h after radiation with both ion species. At the 24 h time point only carbon treated samples of both cell lines showed increased γH2AX levels. The presence of the magnetic field did neither influence the survival parameters of either cell line, nor initial DNA damage and DNA damage clearance. Conclusions: Applying a perpendicular magnetic field did not influence the cell survival, DNA repair, nor the biological effectiveness of protons or carbon ions in two human cancer cell lines.

Phytanic acid (PA: 3,7,11,15-tetramethylhexadecanoic acid) is an important biometabolite of the chlorophyll-derived diterpenoid phytol. Its biological sources (occurrence) and ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination) profile are well-discussed in the literature. Cumulative literature suggests that PA has beneficial as well as harmful biological roles in humans and other animals. This study aimed to sketch a brief summary of PA’s beneficial and harmful pharmacological effects in test systems on the basis of existing literature reports. Literature findings propose that PA has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory, antidiabetic, anti-obesity, anticancer, and oocyte maturation effects. Although a high plasma PA-level mediated SLS remains controversial, it is evident to link it with Refsum’s disease and other peroxisomal enzyme deficiency diseases in humans, including RCDP and LD; ZHDA and Alzheimer’s disease; progressive ataxia and dysarthria; and an increased risk of some lymphomas such as LBL, FL, and NHL. PA exerts toxic effects on different kinds of cells, including neuronal, cardiac, and renal cells, through diverse pathways such as oxidative stress, mitochondrial disturbance, apoptosis, disruption of Na+/K+-ATPase activity, Ca2+ homeostasis, alteration of AChE and MAO activities, etc. PA is considered a cardiac biomarker in humans. In conclusion, PA may be one of the most important biometabolites in humans.

The behavior of metals and metallodrugs in biological systems affects the setup of therapeutic strategies with a distinct mode of action and new knowledge of clinically-proven drugs. Metals also have essential chemical roles in foods and therapies. Despite the abundance of newly synthesized molecules, metallodrugs have been the focus of several pharmaceutical investigations, but their distinct modes of action are primarily unknown or incompletely understood. Scientists now have new tools to understand how metallodrugs can be effective against various diseases because of the ongoing development of effective and sensitive molecular biology and chemistry techniques. Research on employing metals in medicine focuses on metal complexes to detect diseases and specially designed ligands to sense biologically occurring metal ions. This study focuses on current findings on the metallodrugs’ syntheses, their therapeutic mode of action, and how the ligands can modify their pharmacological and physicochemical features.

Exposure to rare earth elements (REY) in the environment can lead to adverse effects on human health. Industrial activities unintentionally produce fly ash, and a small fraction of fly ash that remains uncaptured by air pollution control devices can enter the atmosphere and contribute as a primary source of airborne fine particle matter (PM). The occurrence of REY in industrial sourced fine PM affects the environment and human health. There is relatively minimal information regarding the human health hazards and biological effects of REY in fine PM produced during industrial activities, especially for non-occupational people. In addition, REY are powerful source-specific tracers for airborne PM from industries. Therefore, relevant research on REY in fine PM from industrial processes not only contributes to understanding and preventing environmental pollution but can also provide basic data for reducing human exposure. This paper provides an overview of the research status and latest advances in various industrial processes, especially their distribution characteristics, influencing factors, tracer application, and biological effects of REY in fine PM from coal-fired power plants. The interaction and combination of nanoplastics with microorganisms, enzymes, plant proteins, and other substances have garnered considerable attention in current research. This study specifically examined the interaction and biological effects of NPs and proteins. The findings indicated that the presence of externally wrapped proteins alters the original morphology and surface roughness of nanoplastics, leading to the formation of unevenly distributed coronas on the surface. This confirms that nanoplastics can interact with proteins to form protein coronas. The study characterized the adsorption behavior of bacterial proteins on unmodified, amino-modified, and carboxyl-modified nanoplastics using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, showing that the adsorption process of the three nanoplastics on bacterial proteins was mainly controlled by chemisorption. Fluorescence spectroscopy revealed a higher binding affinity of unmodified nanoplastics. Nearly 40 % of the proteins in the protein corona of unmodified NPs are involved in metabolite production and electron transport processes. Nearly 50 % of the proteins in the protein corona of amino-modified NPs are involved in cellular metabolic processes, followed by enzymes that carry out redox reactions. The protein corona of carboxyl-modified NPs has the highest number of proteins involved in metabolic pathways, followed by proteins involved in energy-electron transfer. The formation of protein coronas on NPs with different surface modifications can reduce the toxicity of nanoplastics to bacteria to a certain extent compared to pure nanoplastics, especially amino-modified NPs, which show a significant increase in bacterial survival. The formation of protein coronas on NPs leads to varying degrees of decrease in bacterial ROS and MDA generation, with amino-modified NPs showing the most reduction; SOD and CAT exhibit varying degrees of increase and decrease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential chiral recognition functions induced by two kinds of novel chiral microenvironment-responsive mesoporous silica nanoparticles (CMR-L-MSN and CMR-D-MSN) for the oral delivery of the poorly water-soluble achiral drug indomethacin (IMC). The as-synthesized CMR-L-MSN and CMR-D-MSN with molecular chirality and high specific surface area (SBET: 1141 and 1075 m2/g, respectively) were successfully prepared through grafting chiral molecular functional groups. The characterization results showed that CMR-L-MSN and CMR-D-MSN were spherical nanoparticles with opposite chiral features and clearly visible pore channels. Ultrasound has the potential to be broadly applied in the field of agricultural food processing due to advantages such as environmental friendliness, low energy costs, no need for exogenous additives and ease of operation. High-frequency ultrasound is mainly used in medical diagnosis and in the food industry for the identification of ingredients and production line quality testing, while low-frequency ultrasounds is mainly used for extraction and separation, accelerating chemical reactions, auxiliary microbial fermentation and quality enhancement in food industry. Magnetic fields have many advantages of convenient use, such as non-toxic, nonpolluting and safe. High-intensity pulsed magnetic fields are widely used as a physical non-thermal sterilization technology in food processing, while weak magnetic fields are better at activating microorganisms and promoting their growth. Ultrasound and magnetic fields, due to their positive biological effects, have a wide range of applications in the food processing industry. This paper provides an overview of the research progress and applications of ultrasound and magnetic fields in food processing from the perspectives of their biological effects and mechanisms of action. Additionally, with the development and application of physical field technology, physical fields can now be used to provide significant technical advantages for assisting fermentation. Suitable physical fields can promote the growth of microbial cells, improve mycelial production and increase metabolic activity. Furthermore, the current status of research into the use of ultrasound and magnetic field technologies for assisting the fermentation of rare edible fungi, is discussed.

Marine litter and more specifically plastic marine litter is nowadays considered a global issue with unprecedented impact and consequences to the entire marine ecosystem and biota. The current situation that has been created worldwide due to the abundance of plastic litter in the Earth's Seas has been characterized as alarming, necessitating the immediate action for an overall reduction of plastic waste, better collection and recycling schemes and beach-shoreline clean-ups. In this article we attempt to delve into the details of the magnitude of the impact that plastic litter have caused to marine biota via a meta-research analysis, by compiling, combining, analysing and presenting data from various relative works, using primarily scientific and, secondarily, grey literature. Apart from the threats that plastic marine litter pose to the marine ecosystem, they present potential threats to humans, as well, via food chain. Air pollution is a worldwide environmental problem with an impact on human health. Particulate matter of ten micrometers or less aerodynamic diameter (PM 10 ) as well as its fine fraction (PM 2.5 ) is related to multiple pulmonary diseases. The impact of air pollution in Mexico City, and importantly, particulate matter has been studied and considered as a risk factor for two decades ago. Previous studies have reported the composition of Mexico City particulate matter, as well as the biological effects induced by this material. However, material collected and used in previous studies is a limited resource, and sampling and particle recovery techniques have been improved. In this study, we describe the methods used in our laboratory for Mexico City airborne particulate matter PM 10 and PM 2.5 sampling, considering the years 2017, 2018 and 2019. We also analyzed the PM 10 and PM 2.5 samples obtained to determine their composition. Finally, we exposed lung cell line cultures to PM 10 and PM 2.5 to evaluate the biological effect of the material in terms of cell viability, cell death, inflammatory response, and cytogenetic alterations. Our results showed that PM 10 composition includes inorganic, organic and biological compounds, while PM 2.5 is a mixture of more enriched organic compounds. PM 10 and PM 2.5 treatment in lung cells does not significantly impact cell viability/cell death. However, PM 10 and PM 2.5 increase the secretion levels of IL-6. Moreover, PM 10 as well as PM 2.5 induce cytogenetic alterations, such as micronuclei, anaphase bridges, trinucleated cells and apoptotic cells in lung cells. A plethora of research has focused on the biosafety of biodegradable plastics (BPs), including their microplastic formation and additives leaching; however, relatively fewer studies have explored biodegradation products. This study aims to investigate the biological effects and chemical features of degradation products from three kinds of BPs, namely polyglycolic acid (PGA), poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), and the blends of PGA/PBAT without the addition of additives, in a simulated small waterbody environment with extracted soil solution for three months. Results showed that exposure to the whole degradation remnants of three BPs had no lethal effects on zebrafish at the current BP environmental concentrations (from 0.24 to 12.72 mg plastic/L) in small waterbodies. However, from the calculated BPs environmental concentrations (from 0.57 to 43.82 mg plastic/L) in 2026, PGA and PGA/PBAT blends may cause adverse effects on the cardiovascular system such as heartbeat rate suppression in zebrafish embryos, and also lead to reduced body length and pericardial edema and spinal curvature in fish larvae. We further qualitatively analyzed the composition of degradation products, and quantitatively measured four dominant degradation monomers (glycolic acid (GA), adipic acid (A), 1,4-butanediol (B), and terephthalic acid (T)) in the degradation remnants. It was found that the observed toxicities were probably due to the presence of GA, A, and T monomers, and their concentrations can reach 0.776, 0.034, and 0.6 mg/L under the calculated future scenario, respectively. It is worth mentioning that either GA or T monomers at the above concentrations were found to cause suppressed heartbeat rate in zebrafish embryos. Low-intensity ultrasound can be applied for medical imaging and disease treatment in clinical and experimental studies. However, the biological effects of ultrasound on blood vessels, especially endothelial cells (ECs) are still unclear. In this study, the laws of endothelial cytoskeleton changes under ultrasound induction are investigated. ECs are exposed to low-intensity ultrasound, and the cytoskeletal morphology is analyzed by a filamentous (F)-actin staining technique. We further analyze the characteristics of cytoskeleton rupture using indirect immunofluorescence techniques and cytoskeleton electron microscopy. Finally, the biological effects induced by ultrasound at the tissue level are investigated in an ex vivo blood-vessel model. Significant changes in cytoskeletal structure are detected when induced by ultrasound, including cytoskeletal rupture, blebbing and apoptosis. Moreover, a temporal threshold of ECs injury under different ultrasonic intensities is established. This study illustrates a pattern of significant changes in the cytoskeletal structure of ECs induced by ultrasound. There is ample evidence that a range of anthropogenic chemicals occur in the aquatic environment, some of which have the potential to cause harm. Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) are a subset of anthropogenic compounds that are poorly characterized in terms of effects and occurrences, and that are generally unregulated. Due to the sheer number of chemicals used, it is necessary to identify and prioritize those that may cause biological impacts. A key challenge of doing so is the lack of traditional ecotoxicological information. The utilization of in vitro exposure-response studies or benchmarks based on in vivo data can provide a basis for developing threshold values for evaluation of potential impacts. There are challenges, including understanding the accuracy and range of application for modeled measures and translating in vitro response information from receptor models to apical endpoints. Despite this, the use of multiple lines of evidence increases the range of available information, and supports a weight-of-evidence approach to inform the screening and prioritization of CECs in the environment. The objective of this work is to perform an evaluation of CECs detected in an urban estuary, and to identify those that are most likely to elicit a biological response. Monitoring data from marine water, wastewater, and fish and shellfish tissue samples from 17 different campaigns combined with multiple biological response measures were compared with appropriate threshold values. CECs were categorized based on their potential to elicit a biological response; the uncertainty, based on consistency of lines of evidence, was also evaluated. Two-hundred-fifteen CECs were detected. Fifty-seven were identified as High Priority (likely to cause a biological effect), and 84 as Watch List (potential to cause biological effects). The laser irradiation on organism will produce a series of biological effects, which can be used for basic medical research, diagnosis and treatments of diseases. However, the mechanism of this biological effects is still unclear. As a sensitive molecular monitoring technique, Raman spectroscopy has became a very popular detection method in biomedical research especially in vivo study. In this paper, we present a compact and flexible micro-Raman system for in vivo studying the mechanism of laser biological effects. The system has the two functions of laser induction and Raman measurement, which can realize the micro-area radiation of laser and simultaneously collect the corresponding Raman spectra in vivo. Although evidence suggests the ubiquity of meso- and microplastics (MMPs) in mangrove forests, our knowledge of their bioavailability and risk on mangrove leaves is scarce. Here, we investigated MMP contamination concerning submerged mangrove leaves and herbivorous snails that mainly feed on them from the four mangrove forests located in Beibu Gulf, Guangxi Province, China. Results showed that the MMP abundance on the mangrove leaves ranged from 0.01 ± 0.00 to 0.42 ± 0.15 items cm -2 , while it ranged from 0.33 ± 0.21 to 6.20 ± 2.91 items individual -1 in the snails. There were significant positive correlations between snails and leaves regarding the abundance of total MMPs and the proportions of MMPs with the same characteristics. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) that mainly derived from aquaculture rafts, accounted for a major component both on the leaves and in the snails in Shi Jiao (SJ). Both the detection frequency and percentage of larger EPS (2.00-17.50 mm) on the leaves in SJ were higher than other sites. Meanwhile, the detection frequency, abundance and percentage of larger EPS on the leaves had significant positive correlations with those of micro-EPS in the snails. These findings suggested that mangrove leaves may represent a viable pathway for MMPs to enter the herbivorous snails. Larger EPS with higher frequency of occurrence on mangrove leaves were more likely to be encountered and ingested by snail considering its opportunistic feeding behavior. In addition, 11 sensitive genes involved in the processes of metabolism, intestinal mucosal immune systems, and cellular transduction in the snails were significantly suppressed by MMP exposure, which may be potentially used as early biomarkers to indicate the biological effects of MMPs under realistic environmental conditions. Microplastics(MPs) are ubiquitous, difficult to degrade, and potentially threatening to organisms in marine environment, so it is important to clarify the factors that affect their biogeochemical processes. The impact of biological activities on the MPs in marine environment is ubiquitous and complex, and there is currently a lack of systematic summaries. This paper reviews the effects of biological actions on the migration, distribution and degradation of MPs in marine environment from four aspects: biological ingestion and digestion, biological movement, biological colonization and biological adhesion. MPs in seawater and sediments can be closely combined with organisms through three pathways: biological ingestion, biofilm formation or adhesion to organisms, and are passed between species at different trophic levels through the food chain. The generation and degradation of faecal pellets and biofilms can alter the density of "environmental MPs", thereby affecting their vertical migration and deposition in water bodies. The movement of swimming organisms and the disturbance by benthic organisms can promote the migration of MPs in water and vertical migration and resuspension in sediments, thereby changing the distribution of MPs in local sea areas. The grinding effect of the digestive tract and the secretion of chemicals from the biofilm (such as enzymes and acids) can reduce the particle size and increase surface roughness of MPs, or even degrade them completely. Besides, biological adhesion may be an important mechanism affecting the distribution, migration and preservation of MPs. The Lithium (Li) industry has been expanding worldwide, over the last decades, and projections expect an increasing demand for its production in the coming years. It has been identified as an emerging pollutant and it occurs widely in aquatic environments, raising concern about its effects on ecosystems. Besides the increasing research on this topic, there is still limited understanding and discussion on the marine and coastal implications of Li occurrence. The present review aims to fill these knowledge gaps by analysing the literature concerning Li occurrence and its effects on marine and coastal ecosystems, including transition areas. Since 1960, the number of publications has increased, especially over the last decade, and available information has reported Li in water and sediments of these areas, while few studies investigated Li in tissues of biota. Among all the studied ecosystems, Chile reported one of the highest Li concentrations. Regarding the adverse effects of Li in aquatic organisms, Bacillariophyceae, Scyphozoa, Bivalvia, Gastropoda, Cephalopoda, Polychaeta, Malacostraca, Echinoidea and Actinopteri were the studied taxonomic classes, and development inhibition, malformations, cellular and metabolic alterations, and behaviour changes were some of the observed impacts. This systematic review aims to summarize the current knowledge on biological effects of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) on human health based on mammalian systems. An extensive search of the literature led to a total of 133 primary research articles on the health relevance of MNPs. Our findings revealed that although the study of MNP cytotoxicity and inflammatory response represents a major research theme, most studies (105 articles) focused on the effects of polystyrene MNPs due to their wide availability as a well characterised research material that can be manufactured with a large range of particle sizes, fluorescence labelling as well as various surface modifications. Among the 133 studies covered in this review, 117 articles reported adverse health effects after being exposed to MNPs. Mammalian in vitro studies identified multiple biological effects including cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, genotoxicity, embryotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, neurotoxicity, renal toxicity and even carcinogenicity, while rodent in vivo models confirmed the bioaccumulation of MNPs in the liver, spleen, kidney, brain, lung and gut, presenting adverse effects at different levels including reproductive toxic effects and trans-generational toxicity. In contrast, the remaining 16 studies indicated an insignificant impact of MNPs on humans. A few studies attempted to investigate the mechanisms or factors driving the toxicity of MNPs and identified several determining factors including size, concentration, shape, surface charge, attached pollutants and weathering process, which, however, were not benchmarked or considered by most studies. This review demonstrates that there are still many inconsistencies in the evaluation of the potential health effects of MNPs due to the lack of comparability between studies. Microplastic particles (MP), arising from the gradual decomposition of plastics in the environment, have been identified as a global problem. Most investigations of MP cytotoxicity use pristine spherical particles available from commercial sources when evaluating their impact on mammalian cells, while only limited data is available for the more relevant "weathered microplastic". In this study, we exposed murine macrophages to polystyrene MP either after up to 130 days of accelerated ageing or in pristine condition. Weathered and pristine MP were physicochemically characterized, and their cytotoxicity was investigated using biological assays, transcriptome analysis, and metabolic pathways prediction. Whereas the response to pristine MP is mainly dominated by a TNF-α release, sharp-edged weathered MP induce broader adverse cellular reactions. This study stresses the importance of including more realistic test particles (e.g., weathered particles) in combination with a broad range of biological assays when evaluating the potential risk of microplastic exposure., (Copyright © 2022. There has been a considerable number of reports on Hg concentrations in Arctic mammals since the last Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) effort to review biological effects of the exposure to mercury (Hg) in Arctic biota in 2010 and 2018. Here, we provide an update on the state of the knowledge of health risk associated with Hg concentrations in Arctic marine and terrestrial mammal species. Using available population-specific data post-2000, our ultimate goal is to provide an updated evidence-based estimate of the risk for adverse health effects from Hg exposure in Arctic mammal species at the individual and population level. Tissue residues of Hg in 13 species across the Arctic were classified into five risk categories (from No risk to Severe risk) based on critical tissue concentrations derived from experimental studies on harp seals and mink. Exposure to Hg lead to low or no risk for health effects in most populations of marine and terrestrial mammals, however, subpopulations of polar bears, pilot whales, narwhals, beluga and hooded seals are highly exposed in geographic hotspots raising concern for Hg-induced toxicological effects. About 6% of a total of 3500 individuals, across different marine mammal species, age groups and regions, are at high or severe risk of health effects from Hg exposure. The corresponding figure for the 12 terrestrial species, regions and age groups was as low as 0.3% of a total of 731 individuals analyzed for their Hg loads. Temporal analyses indicated that the proportion of polar bears at low or moderate risk has increased in East/West Greenland and Western Hudson Bay, respectively. There are increasing concerns regarding the ecological risks of plastics to the natural environment, especially the potential effects of plastic leachates on organisms, which contain various toxic components. However, appropriate methods to assess the overall environmental risks of plastics are limited. In this study, five different plastic products (three conventional and two biodegradable plastics) were immersed in simulated freshwater, and their toxicity was assessed using a battery of bioassays. We evaluated the effects of plastic leachates effects on organisms from four trophic levels of species (nematodes, Caenorhabditis elegans; algae, Scenedesmus obliquus; daphnids, Daphnia magna; and fish, Danio rerio) by measuring their acute and chronic toxicity. Our results indicated that all plastic leachates exhibited poor acute and chronic toxicity to the organisms. The acute toxicity of conventional plastic leachates with EC 20 values <1.6 g plastic/L was higher than that of the biodegradable polydioxanone (PPDO) leachate (EC 20 : 16.2-796.1 g plastic/L); however, the toxicity of PPDO-octane (EC 20 : 0.04-1.9 g plastic/L) was similar to that of polyethylene or polystyrene (excluding toxicity in D. magna). Similarly, the leachates of the three conventional plastics and PPDO-octane had obvious inhibitory effects on the growth of C. elegans at exposure concentrations higher than 0.01 g plastic/L; however, the toxicity of the PPDO leachates was at least an order of magnitude lower. Therefore, the environmental related concentration of the plastic leachates did not have significant toxic effects. Considering that a single bioassay does not provide comprehensive information on biological implications, this study provided a new integrated and efficient method for the environmental risk assessment (ERA) of plastic leachates. Micro(nano)plastics are emerging environmental contaminants of concern. The prevalence of micro(nano)plastics in soils has aroused increasing interest regarding their potential effects on soil biota including terrestrial plants. With the rapid increase in published studies on plant uptake and impacts of micro(nano)plastics, a review summarizing the current research progress and highlighting future needs is warranted. A growing body of evidence indicates that many terrestrial plants can potentially take up micro(nano)plastics via roots and translocate them to aboveground portions via the vascular system, primarily driven by the transpiration stream. Exposure to micro(nano)plastics can cause a variety of effects on the biometrical, biochemical, and physiological parameters of terrestrial plants, but the specific effects vary considerably as a function of plastic properties, plant species, and experimental conditions. The presence of micro(nano)plastics can also affect the bioavailability of other associated toxicants to terrestrial plants. Chitosan-based nanofibers (CS-NFs) are excellent artificial extracellular matrices (ECMs) due to the resemblance of CS with the glycosaminoglycans of the natural ECMs. Despite this excellent feature, the poor electrospinnability and mechanical properties of CS are responsible for important limitations in respect to its biomedical applications. To improve the CS's physico-chemical properties, new bioactive and biomimetic CS-NFs were formulated with polyethylene oxide (PEO), having incorporated different active components (ACs) with important beneficial effects for healing. Manuka honey (trophic and antimicrobial effects), propolis (antimicrobial effects), Calendula officinalis infusion (antioxidant effect, reepithelialization stimulating agent), insulin (trophic effect), and L-arginine (angiogenic effect) were selected as ACs. SEM morphology analysis revealed well-alignment, unidirectional arrays, with small diameters, no beads, and smooth surfaces for developed CS&#95;PEO-ACs NFs. The developed NFs showed good biodegradability (NFs mats lost up to 60% of their initial weight in PBS), increased hemocompatibility (hemolytic index less than 4%), and a reduced cytotoxicity degree (cell viability degree more than 90%). In addition, significant antioxidant and antimicrobial effects were noted for the developed NFs which make them suitable for chronic wounds, due to the role of oxidative stress and infection risk in delaying normal wound healing. The most suitable for wound healing applications seems to be CS&#95;PEO@P&#95;C which showed an improved hemolysis index (2.92 ± 0.16%), is non-toxic (cell viability degree more than 97%), and has also significant radical scavenging effect (DPPH inhibition more than 65%). In addition, CS&#95;PEO@P&#95;C presents increased antimicrobial effects, more noticeably for Staphylococcus aureus strain, which is a key feature in preventing wound infection and delaying the healing process. Due to their ubiquitous presence, size and characteristics as ability to adsorb pollutants, microplastics are hypothesized as causing a major impact on smaller organisms, such as plankton. Despite this, there is a need to determine whether these impacts just relate to the environmental presence of the materials or their effects on biological processes. Therefore, we aimed to 1) review current research on plankton and microplastics; 2) compare field and laboratory experimental findings, and 3) identify knowledge gaps. The systematic review showed that 70% of the 147 relevant scientific publications were from laboratory studies and microplastics interactions with plankton were recorded in 88 taxa. Field study publications were relatively scarce and the characteristics of microplastics collected in the field were very different from those used in laboratory experiments thereby limiting the comparison between studies. Our systematic review highlighted knowledge gaps in: 1) the number of field studies; 2) the non-comparability between laboratory and field conditions, and 3) the low diversity of plankton species studied. Furthermore, this review indicated that while there are many studies on contamination by microplastics, the effects of this contamination (i.e., pollution per se) have been less well-studied, especially in the field at population, community, and ecosystem levels., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Introduction: The biological consequences of absorbed radiation doses are ill-defined for radiopharmaceuticals, unlike for external beam radiotherapy (EBRT). A reliable assay that assesses the biological consequences of any radionuclide is much needed. Here, we evaluated the cell-free plasmid DNA assay to determine the relative biological effects of radionuclides such as Auger electron-emitting [ 67 Ga]GaCl 3 or [ 111 In]InCl 3 compared to EBRT., Methods: Supercoiled pBR322 plasmid DNA (1.25 or 5 ng/μL) was incubated with 0.5 or 1 MBq [ 67 Ga]GaCl 3 or [ 111 In]InCl 3 for up to 73 h or was exposed to EBRT ( 137 Cs; 5 Gy/min; 0-40 Gy). The induction of relaxed and linear plasmid DNA, representing single and double strand breaks, respectively, was assessed by gel electrophoresis. Chelated forms of 67 Ga were also investigated using DOTA and THP. Topological conversion rates for supercoiled-to-relaxed (k sr x ) or relaxed-to-linear (k rl x ) DNA were obtained by fitting a kinetic model., Results: DNA damage increased both with EBRT dose and incubation time for [ 67 Ga]GaCl 3 and [ 111 In]InCl 3 . Damage caused by [ 67 Ga]GaCl 3 decreased when chelated. [ 67 Ga]GaCl 3 proved more damaging than [ 111 In]InCl 3 ; 1.25 ng/μL DNA incubated with 0.5 MBq [ 67 Ga]GaCl 3 for 2 h led to a 70% decrease of intact plasmid DNA as opposed to only a 19% decrease for [ 111 In]InCl 3 . For both EBRT and radionuclides, conversion rates were slower for 5 ng/μL than 1.25 ng/μL plasmid DNA. DNA damage caused by 1 Gy EBRT was the equivalent to damage caused by 0.5 MBq unchelated [ 67 Ga]GaCl 3 and [ 111 In]InCl 3 after 2.05 ± 0.36 and 9.3 ± 0.77 h of incubation, respectively., Conclusions: This work has highlighted the power of the plasmid DNA assay for a rapid determination of the relative biological effects of radionuclides compared to external beam radiotherapy. Baltic mussels (Mytilus spp.) were exposed to the explosive trinitrotoluene (TNT) for 96 h (0.31-10.0 mg/L) and 21 d (0.31-2.5 mg/L). Bioaccumulation of TNT and its degradation products (2- and 4-ADNT) as well as biological effects ranging from the gene and cellular levels to behaviour were investigated. Although no mortality occurred in the concentration range tested, uptake and metabolism of TNT and responses in antioxidant enzymes and histochemical biomarkers were observed already at the lowest concentrations. The characteristic shell closure behaviour of bivalves at trigger concentrations led to complex exposure patterns and non-linear responses to the exposure concentrations. Conclusively, exposure to TNT exerts biomarker reponses in mussels already at 0.31 mg/L while effects are recorded also after a prolonged exposure although no mortality occurs. Background: There is a risk of developing pressure ulcers from lying on an X-ray table mattress, if the mattress pressure redistribution properties are poor., Aim: To assess the pressure redistribution properties of 'new' and 'in current clinical use' X-ray table mattresses., Methods and Materials: Twenty one X-ray table mattresses, each of 2.5 cm thickness, were evaluated. An anthropomorphic human phantom of adult stature with five different weights (minimum, first quartile, mean, third quartile and maximum) was used to simulate human head, pelvis and heels (pressure ulcer jeopardy areas). Using Xsensor technology, peak pressure was measured and Interface Pressure Ratio was calculated for the three pressure ulcer jeopardy areas 'with' and 'without' an X-ray table mattress., Results: For all mattresses, statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were found between the peak pressure values with and without using an X-ray table mattress for the three pressure ulcer jeopardy areas; similarly, for all mattresses, statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were found between the Interface Pressure Ratio values with and without using x-ray table mattress. The type and age of the mattress was observed to have an impact on peak pressure values and Interface Pressure Ratios, with older mattresses performing worse., Conclusion: Peak pressure values and Interface Pressure Ratios are reduced significantly when using newer X-ray table mattresses. This could be because newer mattresses use more appropriate materials in their construction and/or older mattresses have lost their pressure redistribution properties. Residual trace organic pollutants (TOPs) and associated biological effects from secondary effluent (SE) are attracting much attention because of their safety concerns. Granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption, due to its low cost and high efficiency, is widely applied for further wastewater treatment, but its selective removals of TOPs and biological effects are poorly understood. In the present study, the surface physicochemical characteristics of four types of typical GACs were investigated, and their correlation with luminescent bacteria toxicity was discussed. Based on the biological effect control, shell GAC, with a great adsorption capacity and high functional group contents was selected for further study, including for the removal of fluorescent dissolved organic matter (DOM), 21 TOPs, and 3 biological effects. The shell GAC showed a promising property of removing fluorescent DOM and TOPs. The total concentration of 21 detected TOPs, including 12 pesticides and 9 pharmaceuticals, achieved 82% removal when 30 g/L shell GACs was added. Individual chemicals removal by GAC adsorption was not well described by an individual parameter (e.g., logD, molecular size, charge, functional groups), but rather by a variety of physical and chemical interactions among TOPs, DOM, and GAC. The biological effects from SE were mainly caused by TOPs and DOM. Hence, shell GACs also showed high removal efficiencies of luminescent bacteria toxicity, genotoxicity, and photosynthetic inhibition effect. The removal mechanisms of the three biological effects from SE were deeply discussed. Microplastics (MPs), defined as particles with diameters <5 mm and including nanoplastics (NPs), with diameters <1 μm, are characterized by large specific surface areas and hydrophobicity. In aquatic and terrestrial environments, MPs interact with co-occurring organic pollutants through sorption and desorption, which alters the environmental behavior of the pollutants, such as their toxicity, bioaccumulation, degradation, and transport. In this review, we summarize the results of current studies of the interactions between MPs and organic contaminants, and focus on the different mechanisms and subsequent ecological risks of contaminant transfer among environmental media, MPs and organisms. The sorption/desorption of organic pollutants on/from MPs is discussed with respect to solution conditions and the properties of both the MPs and the pollutants. More importantly, the ability of MPs to alter the toxicity, bioaccumulation, degradation, and transport of organic pollutants through these interactions is considered as well. We then examine the interrelationships of the different environmental behaviors of MPs and organic pollutants and the roles played by environmental processes. Finally, we identify the remaining knowledge gaps that must be filled in further studies in order to accurately evaluate the environmental risks of MPs and their associated organic pollutants., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. The extensive applicability of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in various fields such as environment, agriculture, medicine or biotechnology has mostly been attributed to their better physicochemical properties as compared with conventional bulk materials. However, functions and biological effects of ENPs change across different scenarios which impede the progress in their risk assessment and safety management. This review thus intends to figure out whether properties of ENPs can be indicators of their behavior through summarizing and analyzing the available literature and knowledge. The studies have indicated that size, shape, solubility, specific surface area, surface charge and surface reactivity constitute a more accurate measure of ENPs functions and toxic effects in addition to mass concentration. Effects of ENPs are also highly dependent on dose metrics, species and strains of organisms, environmental conditions, exposure route and duration. Searching correlations between properties and functions or biological effects may serve as an effective way in understanding positive and negative impacts of ENPs. An assessment comprising chemical, microbiological and (eco)toxicological parameters of antibiotic-related microcontaminants, during the application of UV-C/H 2 O 2 oxidation in secondary-treated urban wastewater, is presented. The process was investigated at bench scale under different oxidant doses (0-50 mg L -1 ) with regard to its capacity to degrade a mixture of antibiotics (i.e. ampicillin, clarithromycin, erythromycin, ofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline and trimethoprim) with an initial individual concentration of 100 μg L -1 . The process was optimized with respect to the oxidant dose. Under the optimum conditions, the inactivation of selected bacteria and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) (i.e. faecal coliforms, Enterococcus spp., Pseudomonasaeruginosa and total heterotrophs), and the reduction of the abundance of selected antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) (e.g. bla OXA , qnrS, sul1, tetM) were investigated. Also, phytotoxicity against three plant species, ecotoxicity against Daphnia magna, genotoxicity, oxidative stress and cytotoxicity were assessed. Apart from chemical actinometry, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling was applied to estimate the fluence rate. For the given wastewater quality and photoreactor type used, 40 mg L -1 H 2 O 2 were required for the complete degradation of the studied antibiotics after 18.9 J cm -2 . Total bacteria and ARB inactivation was observed at UV doses <1.5 J cm -2 with no bacterial regrowth being observed after 24 h. The abundance of most ARGs was reduced at 16 J cm -2 . The process produced a final effluent with lower phytotoxicity compared to the untreated wastewater. The toxicity against Daphnia magna was shown to increase during the chemical oxidation. Although genotoxicity and oxidative stress fluctuated during the treatment, the latter led to the removal of these effects. Metal pollution in the Bohai Sea in China has posed a potential risk on marine organisms. In this work, crabs (Portunus trituberculatus) were sampled from four sites, namely a reference (site 3934) and three metal-polluted (sites 6151, 6351, and 3562) sites, located in the Bohai Sea. Metal concentrations in crab gill tissues were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Cu, Zn, and Cd in crab samples from S3562 presented the highest concentrations. Particularly, Cu concentration exceeded the marine biological quality standard II. Cd contents in crab samples from all metal-polluted sites exceeded the marine biological quality standard I. Nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabolomics indicated metal pollution-induced immune stresses in crab samples from all metal-polluted sites. Metal pollution in S6151 and S6351 disturbed energy metabolism through differential pathways. Due to their small size, nanoplastics (NPLs) possess specific properties which can potentiate their toxicity towards aquatic organisms. As primary producers, microalgae are at the base of aquatic food chains, thus negative impacts of NPLs will likely lead to disturbances in ecosystem productivity. The majority of data available on the toxicity of NPLs is limited to polystyrene and green microalgae, leaving a significant lack of knowledge on impacts of other polymer types across different taxonomic groups. So, the main objective of this study was to evaluate the cell responses of the red microalgae Rhodomonas baltica to plain and carboxylated poly(methyl methacrylate) NPLs (PMMA and PMMA-COOH, 50 nm). Results showed different NPL behaviour in media over time, with PMMA forming micro-scale aggregates and PMMA-COOH maintaining its nominal size range. PMMA caused a higher impact in cellular and physiological parameters than PMMA-COOH, even though a decrease in algal growth was only seen for the later. Overall, PMMA caused a significant decrease in cell viability followed by an increase in cell size and complexity, overproduction of pigments, loss of membrane integrity, hyperpolarization of the mitochondrial membrane, increased production of ROS and LPO, decrease in DNA content and reduced photosynthetic capacity. Conversely, a decrease in algal growth for PMMA-COOH was connected to an impairment in cell cycle and consequent decrease in cell viability, metabolic activity and photosynthetic performance, with negligible effects in ROS formation and pigments content. This study provided a first insight into the mechanistic understanding of the toxic impacts of PMMA and PMMA-COOH NPLs in red microalgae. Results obtained suggest an interaction between both NPLs and R. baltica cell surface that is dependent on particle behaviour and surface chemistry. In radiotherapy, the dose prescription is currently based on discretized dose-effects records that do not take into fully account for the complexity of the patient-dose-response relationship. Their predictive performance on both anti-tumour efficacy and toxicity can be optimized by integrating radiobiological models. It is with this in mind that the calculation models TCP (Tumor Control Probability) and NTCP (Normal Tissue Complication Probability) have been developed. Their construction involves several important steps that are necessary and important to understand. The first step is based on radiobiological models allowing to calculate according to more or less complexity the rate of surviving cells after irradiation. Two additional steps are required to convert the physical dose into an equivalent biological dose, in particular a 2Gy equivalent biological dose (EQD2): first to take into account the effect of the fractionation of the dose for both the target volume and the organs at risk; second to convert an heterogeneous dose to an organ into an homogeneous dose having the same effect (Niemierko generalized equivalent uniform dose (gEUD)). Hydrogen gas therapy has been recognized as the promising application merit. However, the underlying mechanism on the biological effects remains far from being understood. In this work, pepsin used as a research model, the effects of hydrogen-rich water on the protein activities and structural properties were investigated by enzymatic assay, atomic force microscopy-based peakforce quantitative nanomechanical mapping (PF-QNM) and terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). We found that hydrogen-rich water can increase the protein activity and its apparent height while alter the mechanical properties (Young's modulus) and the terahertz dynamics. Metal pollution in Laizhou Bay along the Bohai Sea in China has been posing a risk on fishery species and hence may affect seafood quality. In this work, shrimps Fenneropenaeus chinensis were sampled from three sites, namely, a reference (site 6334) and two metal-polluted (sites 6262 and 7262) sites, located in Laizhou Bay. The metal concentrations in shrimp muscle tissues were tested using the ICP-MS technique. The Cr and Cu concentrations were the highest in the shrimp samples from site 7262, exceeding the national seafood safety standard Ⅱ, and the As concentration was much higher than the national seafood safety standard Ⅲ. NMR-based metabolomics indicated that metal pollution induced oxidative and immune stresses, damaged the muscular structure, and disrupted energy metabolism in shrimps at sites 6262 and 7262, in particular disturbed osmotic regulation in shrimps at site 7262. Titanium-based materials are widely employed by the biomedical industry in orthopedic and dental implants. However, when placed into the human body, these materials are highly susceptible to degradation processes, such as corrosion, wear, and tribocorrosion. As a consequence, metallic ions or particles (debris) may be released, and although several studies have been conducted in recent years to better understand the effects of their exposure to living cells, a consensual opinion has not yet been obtained. In this work, we produced metallic-based wear particles by tribological tests carried out on Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-15Zr-15Mo alloys. They were posteriorly physicochemically characterized according to their crystal structure, size, morphology, and chemical composition and compared to Ti-6Al-4V commercially available particles. Finally, adsorbed endotoxins were removed (by applying a specific thermal treatment) and endotoxin-free particles were used in cell experiments to evaluate effects of their exposure to human osteoblasts (MG-63 and HOb), namely cell viability/metabolism, proinflammatory cytokine production (IL-6 and PGE2), and susceptibility to internalization processes. Our results indicate that tribologically-obtained wear particles exhibit fundamental differences in terms of size (smaller) and morphology (irregular shapes and rough surfaces) when compared to the commercial ones. Consequently, both Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-15Zr-15Mo particles were able to induce more pronounced effects on cell viability (decrease) and cytokine production (increase) than did Ti-6Al-4V commercial particles. Furthermore, both types of wear particles penetrated osteoblast membranes and were internalized by the cells.
