The target viral and bacterial concentrations in river water are essential for environmental monitoring and public health studies. Filtration-based methods are commonly employed, yet challenges arise due to recoverability and filter pore size. This study aimed to compare the performance of electronegative membrane filtration (EMF) and automated Concentrating Pipette (CP) Select (InnovaPrep) methods for quantifying antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and bacterial and viral markers in river water samples. Fifty-four river water samples were collected from upstream and downstream locations in a river in Japan. The CP Select method was modified by adding MgCl 2 and using different tips. The recovery efficiencies for total coliforms and Escherichia coli were assessed, and class 1 integron-integrase gene (intI1), 16S rRNA, gene encoding sulfonamide resistance (sul1), cross-assembly phage (crAssphage), pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV), and Escherichia coli gene (sfmD) were detected. CP Select showed recovery efficiencies of 45 %-63 % for total coliforms and 17 %-35 % for E. coli. The intI1, 16S rRNA, sul1, crAssphage, PMMoV, and sfmD concentrations using the modified CP Select method were 10.1 ± 0.5, 8.7 ± 0.2, 7.7 ± 0.2, 6.7 ± 0.2, 5.4 ± 0.2, and 3.5 ± 0.5 log 10 copies/L, respectively. Higher intI1 and sul1 concentrations were observed downstream, with the highest contribution percentage (22 % and 21 %) using CP Select or EMF. The modified CP Select method with 0.05 μm tips yielded more quantifiable results for all target genes and greater PMMoV concentrations (p < 0.05). Positive correlations were found among bacterial, ARG/MGE, and viral markers (Spearman's ρ = 0.71 for 16S rRNA and sfmD, 0.88 for intI1 and sul1, and 0.64 for PMMoV and crAssphage). The modified CP Select method demonstrated effective recovery of bacteria and quantification of ARGs, MGEs, and microbial markers in river water. Background: Remediation of heavy metal-contaminated water using phytoremediation with accumulator aquatic plants is a promising low-cost emerging technology that adapts very well to the surrounding ecosystem. For the system to work efficiently, metal-saturated plants must be replaced, producing a potentially toxic amount of biomass that is usually stored dry to reduce its volume. The speciation of the high metal content in this biomass is crucial to define its final destination. This work explores the application of synchrotron-based EDIXS (Energy Dispersive Inelastic X-ray Scattering) to monitor the speciation of copper in regional aquatic plants from a laboratory-scale phytoremediation system., Results: The phytofiltration system utilized Lemna minor L. and Salvinia biloba Raddi species grown under controlled conditions of light and nutrient availability. Both species are known hyperaccumulators of copper and are prevalent in lakes and rivers across South America. The validation of EDIXS was previously carried out by comparing the results of copper standard samples with those obtained by XANES. The findings revealed that both plant species retained copper in chemical complexes exhibiting octahedral coordination with a Cu valence of 2. Notably, differences emerged between the leaves and roots of Lemna minor L., suggesting a more pronounced adsorption of copper in its leaves, a trend that intensified with exposure. In opposite, for Salvinia the differences between leaves and roots suggests the presence of specific protective mechanisms to cope the copper exposure. Surprisingly, no significant dependence on copper concentration of the aqueous media was observed for either species., Significance and Novelty: These promising results endorse the viability of the proposed methodology in identifying the most effective fate of biomass generated in phytoremediation systems. Objective: This study investigated the prevalence of water filtration and purification system (WFPS) use among residents of central Indiana (USA) and determined the effects of WFPS on the concentrations of fluoride, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium in tap water., Methods: A census-based questionnaire collected data on demographics, water use, and water sources. Participants were also asked to provide water samples from their tap water or the WFPS they used. Water samples were analyzed using ion-specific electrodes (fluoride) and atomic absorption spectrometry (metals). Mineral concentration comparisons between water sources used nonparametric tests; questionnaire associations were testing using correlations, chi-square tests, and nonparametric tests., Results: One hundred and one participants completed the study, of which 71 % used some type of WFPS. Blacks were less likely to use WFPS than Asian or White participants (p = 0.045). Those with bachelor's degrees or higher were more likely to use WFPS (p = 0.003). The most used WFPS were pitcher filters (31 %), water softeners (21 %), reverse osmosis systems (11 %), faucet-mounted filters (4 %), and whole-house carbon filters (1 %). Reverse osmosis systems resulted in the lowest mineral concentrations (median, ppm; F-0.08, Ca-2.30, Mg-0.46, Na-4.60, P-0.35). Pitcher filters were largely comparable to unfiltered tap water. Water softeners resulted in the highest sodium concentrations (78.40 ppm)., Conclusion: A large proportion of study participants use WFPS, with pitcher filters being the most common. The spleen constantly clears altered red blood cells (RBCs) from the circulation, tuning the balance between RBC formation (erythropoiesis) and removal. The retention and elimination of RBCs occur predominantly in the open circulation of the spleen, where RBCs must cross submicron-wide inter-endothelial slits (IES). Several experimental and computational studies have illustrated the role of IES in filtrating the biomechanically and morphologically altered RBCs based on a rigid wall assumption. However, these studies also reported that when the size of IES is close to the lower end of clinically observed sizes (less than 0.5 μm), an unphysiologically large pressure difference across the IES is required to drive the passage of normal RBCs, sparking debates on the feasibility of the rigid wall assumption. In this work, We propose two deformable IES models, namely the passive model and the active model, aiming to explore the impact of the deformability of IES on the filtration function of the spleen. In the passive model, we implement the worm-like string model to depict the IES's deformation as it interacts with blood plasma and allows RBC to traverse. In contrast, the active model involved regulating the IES deformation based on the local pressure surrounding the slit. To demonstrate the validity of the deformable model, we simulate the filtration of RBCs with varied size and stiffness by IES under three scenarios: (1) a single RBC traversing a single slit; (2) a suspension of RBCs traversing an array of slits, mimicking in vitro spleen-on-a-chip experiments; (3) RBC suspension passing through the 3D spleen filtration unit known as'the splenon'. Our simulation results of RBC passing through a single slit show that the deformable IES model offers more accurate predictions of the critical cell surface area to volume ratio that dictate the removal of aged RBCs from circulation compared to prior rigid-wall models. Our biophysical models of the spleen-on-a-chip indicate a hierarchy of filtration function stringency: rigid model > passive model > active model, providing a possible explanation of the filtration function of IES. We also illustrate that the biophysical model of 'the splenon' enables us to replicate the ex vivo experiments involving spleen filtration of malaria-infected RBCs. Cellulose-based aerogels have attracted significant attention for oil/water separation due to their high porosity, large specific surface area and high adsorption capacity. However, their intrinsic hydrophilicity, and inadequate mechanical properties have often limited their practical applications. Traditional freeze-dried cellulose aerogels exhibit unsatisfactory elasticity and require a separate surface modification process to adjust the surface wettability. In this study, we present a novel one-pot fabrication strategy which simultaneously achieves the crosslinking of individual cellulose nanofibers and the hydrophobic modification of the surface wettability. Following directional freeze-drying, hydrophobic, superelastic, and anisotropic cellulose-based aerogel was prepared from the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibers, isolated from harakeke (New Zealand native flax). The resulting aerogel exhibits a high water contact angle of 142°, good compressive recovery performance (85 % recovery of the original height after 100 compression cycles at 70 % strain), and outstanding adsorption capacity for various types of oil and organic solvents (80-105 g/g). Furthermore, the aerogel could also be used as a filter to separate surfactant stabilized water-in-oil emulsions with a high flux (782 L m -2  h -1 ) and a high separation efficiency (98.7-99.2 %). Semi-aerobic aged refuse biofilters (SAARB) are commonly-used biotechnologies for treating landfill leachate. In actual operation, SAARB often faces harsh conditions characterized by high concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and Cl - , as well as a low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N), which can disrupt the microbial community within SAARB, leading to operational instability. Maintaining the stable operation of SAARB is crucial for the efficient treatment of landfill leachate. However, the destabilization mechanism of SAARB under harsh conditions remains unclear. To address this, the study simulated the operation of SAARB under three harsh conditions, namely, high COD loading (H-COD), high chloride ion (Cl - ) concentration environment (H-Cl - ), and low C/N ratio environment (L-C/N). The aim is to reveal the destabilization mechanism of SAARB under harsh conditions by analyzing the fluorescence characteristics of effluent DOM and the microbial community in aged refuse. The results indicate that three harsh conditions have different effects on SAARB. H-COD leads to the accumulation of proteins; H-Cl - impedes the reduction of nitrite nitrogen; L-C/N inhibits the degradation of humic substances. These outcomes are attributed to the specific effects of different factors on the microbial communities in different zones of SAARB. H-COD and L-C/N mainly affect the degradation of organic matter in aerobic zone, while H-Cl - primarily impedes the denitrification process in the anaerobic zone. The abnormal enrichment of Corynebacterium, Castellaniella, and Sporosarcina can indicate the instability of SAARB under three harsh conditions, respectively. To maintain the steady operation of SAARB, targeted acclimation of the microbial community in SAARB should be carried out to cope with potentially harsh operating conditions. Electrobioremediation is one of the most innovative disciplines for treating organic pollutants and it is based on the ability of electroactive bacteria to exchange electrons with electroconductive materials. Electroactive biofilters have been demonstrated to be efficient for treating urban wastewater with a low footprint; however, their application can be expanded for treating industrial wastewater containing significant concentrations (2.4 % vol ) of commercial surfactants (containing lauryl sulfate, lauryl ether sulfate, cocamydopropyl betaine, and dodecylbenzene sulfonate, among others). Our electroactive biofilter outperformed a conventional inert biofilter made of gravel for all tested conditions, reaching removal rates as high as 4.5 kg COD/m 3 bed ·day and withstood Organic Loading Rates as high as 9 Kg COD/m 3 ·d without significantly affecting removal efficiency. The biomass accumulation reduced available bed volume in the electroactive biofilter just by 39 %, while the gravel biofilter decreased by 80 %. Regarding microbial communities, anaerobic and electroactive bacteria represented a substantial proportion of the total population in the electroactive biofilter. Pseudomonas was the dominant genus, while Cupriavidus, Shewanella, Citrobacter, Desulfovibrio, and Arcobacter were potential electroactive strains found in relevant proportions. Schistosomiasis, caused by trematodes of genus Schistosoma, is among the most seriously neglected tropical diseases. Although rapid surveillance of risk areas for Schistosoma transmission is vital to control schistosomiasis, the habitat and infection status of this parasite are difficult to assess. Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis, involving the detection of extra-organismal DNA in water samples, facilitates cost-efficient and sensitive biomonitoring of aquatic environments and is a promising tool to identify Schistosoma habitat and infection risk areas. However, in tropical wetlands, highly turbid water causes filter clogging, thereby decreasing the filtration volume and increasing the risk of false negatives. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to conduct laboratory experiments and field surveys in Lake Victoria, Mbita, to determine the appropriate filter pore size for S. mansoni eDNA collection in terms of particle size and filtration volume. In the laboratory experiment, aquarium water was sequentially filtered using different pore size filters. Targeting >3 µm size fraction was found to be sufficient to capture S. mansoni eDNA particles, regardless of their life cycle stage (egg, miracidia, and cercaria). In the field surveys, GF/D (2.7 µm nominal pore size) filter yielded 2.5-times the filtration volume obtained with a smaller pore size filter and pre-filtration methods under the same time constraints. Moreover, a site-occupancy model was applied to the field detection results to estimate S. mansoni eDNA occurrence and detection probabilities and assess the number of water samples and PCR replicates necessary for efficient eDNA detection. Air pollution poses a critical global challenge with severe environmental and human health implications. The associated health risks, including premature mortality, underscore the urgency of effective mitigation strategies. Many studies focus on control strategies without considering specific contaminant types, and there is a notable gap in research on cost-effective, eco-friendly methods, especially in countries facing substantial air pollution challenges. This study aims to fill this gap by providing a comprehensive review of various air pollutants and proposing optimal passive design strategies for mitigating them in building facades. Through a structural process and comparative analysis of existing literature, this study evaluates the cost, maintenance, applicability of retrofitting, and removal efficacy of three categories of control strategies: bio-filtration, adsorbents, and water-based approaches. The results confirm that biological air purification systems are more effective than other methods at reducing PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and VOCs. Moreover, the cost analysis confirms that the more costly approaches are photocatalytic filters and metal-organic frameworks derived from the adsorbent solutions. Thus, the study suggests applying cost-effective techniques like facade biofiltration, and water-based curtain façade in areas with high air pollution. In terms of the applicability of retrofitting, the results ascertain adsorbent strategies are the most effective for reducing air pollutants in existing buildings followed by water-based methods. Considering limitations associated with certain strategies, such as the high cost and regular maintenance, this study proposes five integrated strategies for the effective control and removal of pollutants from building exteriors. Biochar used in fixed filter columns (BFCs) has garnered significant attention for its capabilities in material immobilization and recovery, filtration mechanisms, and potential for scale-up, surpassing the limitations of batch experiments. This review examines the efficacy of biochar in BFCs, either as the primary filtering material or in combination with other media, across various wastewater treatment scenarios. BFCs show high treatment efficiency, with an average COD removal of 80 % ±15.3 % (95 % confidence interval: 72 %, 86 %). Nutrient removal varies, with nitrogen-ammonium and phosphorus-phosphate removal averaging 71 ± 17.1 % (60 %, 80 %) and 57 % ± 25.6 % (41 %, 74 %), respectively. Pathogen reduction is notable, averaging 2.4 ± 1.12 log10 units (1.9, 2.9). Biochemical characteristics, pollutant concentrations, and operational conditions, including hydraulic loading rate and retention time, are critical to treatment efficiency. The pyrolysis temperature (typically 300 to 800 °C) and duration (1.0 to 4.0 h) influence biochar's specific surface area (SSA), with higher temperatures generally increasing SSA. This review supports the biochar application in wastewater treatment and guides the design and operation of BFCs, bridging laboratory research and field applications. Autologous fat grafting (AFG), mostly in combination with adhesiolysis, has become the workhorse for reconstructing a dysfunctional or absent subcutaneous layer. In a previous study we showed that fat grafts isolated by centrifuging led to more than 20 % improvement in scar pliability. Nevertheless, there is still debate on which technique should be used to process and purify fat grafts. Therefore, a cohort with matured scars was obtained using the same study protocol but with filtration as processing technique. Scar quality was evaluated by the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS version 2.0), the Cutometer (pliability) and the DSM II ColorMeter (erythema and melanin). Scar evaluation was performed pre-operatively (baseline) and at 3 and 12 months after AFG. Between 2014 and 2018, 46 patients were included. Mean scar age was 20 ± 17 years and the majority of scars was caused by burns. Compared with baseline, patients showed improvement in scar quality measured by POSAS items at 12 months follow-up. The item score of 'pliability' improved the most from 7.4 to 5.8 (p = 0.001). Item scores of 'pain', 'itch' and 'color' also improved significantly. Clinicians also scored 'pliability' as most improved, but this was not statistically significant (p = 0.111). Objectively measured pliability and erythema and melanin showed no statistically significant differences at 12 months follow-up. Patient-reported outcomes revealed a significant improvement in scar quality, especially scar pliability, after AFG processed by filtration in patients with adherent scars. Nanofiltration (NF) is a promising technology in the treatment of microelectronic wastewater. However, the treatment of concentrate derived from NF system remains a substantial technical challenge, impeding the achievement of the zero liquid discharge (ZLD) goal in microelectronic wastewater industries. Herein, a ZLD system, coupling a two-stage NF technology with anaerobic biotechnology was proposed for the treatment of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH)-contained microelectronic wastewater. The two-stage NF system exhibited favorable efficacy in the removal of conductivity (96 %), total organic carbon (TOC, 90 %), and TMAH (96 %) from microelectronic wastewater. The membrane fouling of this system was dominated by organic fouling, with the second stage NF membrane experiencing a more serious fouling compared to the first stage membrane. The anaerobic biotechnology achieved a near-complete removal of TMAH and an 80 % reduction in TOC for the first stage NF concentrate. Methyloversatilis was the key genus involved in the anaerobic treatment of the microelectronic wastewater concentrate. Specific genes, including dmd-tmd, mtbA, mttB and mttC were identified as significant players in mediating the dehydrogenase and methyl transfer pathways during the process of TMAH biodegradation. The concept of bio-inspired gradient hierarchies, in which the well-defined MOF nanocrystals serve as active nanodielectrics to create electroactive shell at poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanofibers, is introduced to promote the surface activity and electroactivity of PLA nanofibrous membranes (NFMs). The strategy enabled significant refinement of PLA nanofibers during coaxial electrospinning (∼40 % decline of fiber diameter), accompanied by remarkable increase of specific surface area (nearly 1.5 m 2 /g), porosity (approximately 85 %) and dielectric constants for the bio-inspired gradient PLA (BG-PLA) NFMs. It largely boosted initial electret properties and electrostatic adsorption capability of BG-PLA NFMs, as well as charge regeneration by TENG mechanisms even under high-humidity environment. The BG-PLA NFMs thus featured exceptionally high PM 0.3 filtration efficiencies with well-controlled air resistance (94.3 %, 163.4 Pa, 85 L/min), in contrast to the relatively low efficiency of only 80.0 % for normal PLA. During the application evaluation of outdoor air purification, excellent long-term filtering performance was demonstrated for the BG-PLA for up to 4 h (nearly 98.0 %, 53 Pa), whereas normal PLA exhibited a gradually declined filtration efficiency and an increased pressure drop. Moreover, the BG-PLA NFMs of increased electroactivity were ready to generate tribo-output currents as driven by respiratory vibrations, which enabled real-time monitoring of electrophysiological signals. Bacteria are pivotal to drinking water treatment and public health. However, the mechanisms of bacterial assembly and their impact on species coexistence remain largely unexplored. This study explored the assembly and succession of bacterial communities in two full-scale drinking water systems over one year. We observed a decline in bacterial biomass, diversity, and co-occurrence network complexity along the treatment processes, except for the biological activated carbon filtration stage. The conventional plant showed higher bacterial diversity than the advanced plant, despite similar bacterial concentrations and better removal efficiency. The biological activated carbon filter exhibited high phylogenetic diversity, indicating enhanced bacterial metabolic functionality for organic matter removal. Chlorination inactivated most bacteria but favored some chlorination-resistant and potentially pathogenic species, such as Burkholderia, Bosea, Brevundimonas, and Acinetobacter. Moreover, the spatiotemporal dynamics of the bacterial continuum were primarily driven by stochastic processes, explaining more than 78% of the relative importance. The advanced plant's bacterial community was less influenced by dispersal limitation and more by homogeneous selection. The stochastic process regulated bacterial diversity and influenced the complexity of the species co-occurrence network. Multiple bench-scale filtration campaigns of Hanford tank waste supernatant on a backpulseable dead-end filtration skid have provided greater insight into the solids that cause fouling and reduce filter performance. The solids collected during each campaign were concentrated from the backpulse solutions and examined using automated particle analysis (APA) methods with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy to categorize particle types and their morphological characteristics. The capacity for organic micropollutant removal in granular activated carbon (GAC) filters for wastewater treatment changes over time. These changes are in general attributed to changes in adsorption, but may in some cases also be affected by biological degradation. Knowledge on the degradation of organic micropollutants, however, is scarce. In this work, the degradation of micropollutants in several full-scale GAC and sand filters was investigated through incubation experiments over a period of three years, using 14 C-labeled organic micropollutants with different susceptibilities to biological degradation (ibuprofen, diclofenac, and carbamazepine), with parallel 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results showed that the degradation of diclofenac and ibuprofen in GAC filters increased with increasing numbers of bed volumes when free oxygen was available in the filter, while variations over filter depth were limited. Despite relatively large differences in bacterial composition between filters, a degradation of diclofenac was consistently observed for the GAC filters that had been operated with high influent oxygen concentration (DO >8 mg/L). Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants that are attracting increasing interest from researchers, and the safety of drinking water is greatly affected by their transportation during filtration. Polystyrene (PS) was selected as a representative MPs, and three filter media (quartz sand, zeolite, and anthracite) commonly found in water plants were used. The retention patterns of PS-MPs by various filter media under various background water quality conditions were methodically investigated with the aid of DLVO theory and colloidal filtration theory. The results show that the different structures and elemental compositions of the three filter media cause them to exhibit different surface roughnesses and surface potentials. A greater surface roughness of the filter media can provide more deposition sites for PS-MPs, and the greater surface roughness of zeolite and anthracite significantly enhances their ability to inhibit the migration of PS-MPs compared with that of quartz sand. However, surface roughness is not the only factor affecting the migration of MPs. The lower absolute value of the surface potential of anthracite causes the DLVO energy between it and PS-MPs to be significantly lower than that between zeolite and PS-MPs, which results in stronger retention of PS-MPs by anthracite, which has a lower surface roughness, than zeolite, which has a higher surface roughness. The transport of PS-MPs in the medium is affected by the combination of the surface roughness of the filter media and the DLVO energy. Under the same operating conditions, the retention efficiencies of the three filter materials for PS-MPs followed the order of quartz sand < zeolite < anthracite. Additionally, the conditions of the solution markedly influenced the transport ability of PS-MPs within the simulated filter column. The transport PS-MPs in the simulated filter column decreased with increasing solution ionic strength and cation valence. Naturally, dissolved organic matter promoted the transfer of PS-MPs in the filter layer, and humic acid had a much stronger facilitating impact than fulvic acid. Leptomeningeal disease (LMD) is a devastating sequela of many cancers, with an extremely poor prognosis. Barriers to improving outcomes are related to the inability of many traditional therapies to effectively reach the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) space within the central nervous system. Liquorpheresis is an emerging treatment modality specific to CSF diseases, the primary mechanism of action of which is direct targeted filtration of CSF content by neurosurgical access. In this review, we highlight the principles of liquorpheresis and detail how LMD can be amenable to this treatment. The olive mill industry is a relevant sector in the economy of Mediterranean countries, while it involves high consumption of water and the production of effluents with high environmental impact. The efficient treatment of olive mill wastewater (OMW) is of high relevance, particularly for these countries. Climate changes are leading to increasing periods of droughts, and water recovery from polluted streams is essential to ensure the sustainability of this scarce resource. A combination of various technologies involving physical, chemical, and biological processes has been developed for OMW treatment. However, the treatments studied have limitations such as the operation costs, difficulty of industrial scale-up, and the fact that the vast majority do not lead to suitable treated water for discharge/reuse. As such, it is urgent to develop a solution capable of efficiently treating this effluent, overcoming the disadvantages of existing processes to convert OMW from a serious environmental problem into a valuable source of water and nutrients. In this review, several studies based on the OMW treatment are critically discussed, from conventional approaches such as the physical (e.g. centrifugation, filtration, and adsorption) and biological (anaerobic digestion and anaerobic co-digestion) processes, to the most recent technologies such as advanced membrane filtration, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and sulfate radical based AOPs (SR-AOPs). Due to the complexity of the effluent, OMW cannot be efficiently treated by a single process, requiring a sequence of technologies before reaching the required characteristics for discharge into water courses or use in crop irrigation. Reviewing the published results in this matter, it seems that the sequence of processes encompassing ozonation, anaerobic digestion, and SR-AOPs could be the ideal combination for this purpose. This study explores the incorporation of Nb 2 AlC and Mo 3 AlC 2 MAX phases, known for their nano-layered structure, into polyether sulfone (PES) membranes to enhance their antifouling and permeability properties for pathogen microorganism filtration against bovine serum albumin (BSA) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). The composite membranes were characterized for their structural and morphological properties, and their performance in mitigating biofouling was evaluated. The structural characterizations have been performed for all the prepared MAX phases and corresponding composite membranes. The antioxidant ability of Nb 2 AlC and Mo 3 AlC 2 MAX phases was defined by the DPPH radical scavenging assay, and the highest antioxidant ability was found to be 59.35 %, while 53.69 % scavenging potential was recorded at 100 mg/L. The percentage scavenging ability was raised with an increase in concentrations. The antimicrobial properties of MAX phases, evaluated as the minimum inhibitory concentration, were stated against several pathogen microorganisms. The tested compounds of Nb 2 AlC and Mo 3 AlC 2 composites containing MAX phases exhibited excellent chemical nuclease activity, and it was determined that Nb 2 AlC caused double strand DNA cleavage activity while Mo 3 AlC 2 induced the complete fragmentation of the DNA molecule. Biofilm inhibition of Nb 2 AlC and Mo 3 AlC 2 MAX phases was studied against Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the maximum biofilm inhibition of Nb 2 AlC and Mo 3 AlC 2 MAX phases was found to be 77.15 % and 69.07 % against S. aureus and also 69.74 % and 65.01 % against P. aeruginosa. Background: Pesticides are used in agricultural production for prevent and control crop diseases and pests, but it is easy to cause excessive pesticides residues in agricultural products, polluting the environment and endangering human health. Due to their unmatched and sustainable capabilities, nanoextraction procedures are becoming every day more important in Analytical Chemistry. In particular, nanoconfined liquid phase extraction has shown extraction capabilities toward polar, medium polar, and/or nonpolar substances, which can be easily modulated depending on the nanoconfined solvent used. Furthermore, this "green" technique showed excellent characteristics in terms of recoveries, extraction time (≤1 min), reliability, and versatility. (97) RESULTS: In this work, the advantages of this technique have been coupled with those of filtration membrane extraction, making use of carbon nanofibers (CnFs) growth on carbon microspheres (CμS). This substrate has been deposited on a filter, which combined with gas chromatographic mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis successfully employed for the nanoextraction of 30 pesticides (18 organochlorine and 12 pyrethroids) in tea samples. Under the optimized extraction conditions, the linear range with standard solutions was from 1 to 1000 ng mL -1  (R 2  ≥ 0.99), the limit of detections in tea samples were in the range 0.56-17.98 μg kg -1 . The accuracy of the developed method was evaluated by measuring the extraction recovery of the spiked tea samples, and recoveries between 74.41 % and 115.46 %. The occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in freshwater environments has been expanded worldwide with growing frequency and severity. HABs can pose a threat to public water supplies, raising concerns about safety of treated water. Many studies have provided valuable information about the impacts of HABs and management strategies on the early-stage treatment processes (e.g., pre-oxidation and coagulation/flocculation) in conventional drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). However, the potential effect of HAB-impacted water in the granular media filtration has not been well studied. Biologically-active filters (BAFs), which are used in drinking water treatment and rely largely on bacterial community interactions, have not been examined during HABs in full-scale DWTPs. In this study, we assessed the bacterial community structure of BAFs, functional profiles, assembly processes, and bio-interactions in the community during both severe and mild HABs. Our findings indicate that bacterial diversity in BAFs significantly decreases during severe HABs due to the predominance of bloom-associated bacteria (e.g., Spingopyxis, Porphyrobacter, and Sphingomonas). The excitation-emission matrix combined with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) confirmed that filter influent affected by the severe HAB contained a higher portion of protein-like substances than filter influent samples during a mild bloom. In addition, BAF community functions showed increases in metabolisms associated with intracellular algal organic matter (AOM), such as lipids and amino acids, during severe HABs. Further ecological process and network analyses revealed that severe HAB, accompanied by the abundance of bloom-associated taxa and increased nutrient availability, led to not only strong stochastic processes in the assembly process, but also a bacterial community with lower complexity in BAFs. In this study, a high-solid anaerobic membrane bioreactor was established for treating food waste, and membrane fouling rates were regulated through multivariate modulation. The anaerobic membrane bioreactor operated stably at a high organic loading rate of 28.75 gCOD/L/d achieved a methane production rate of 8.03 ± 0.61 L/L/d. Experimental findings revealed that the most effective control of membrane fouling was achieved at a filtration- relaxation ratio (F/R) of 10/90 s. This indicates that a higher relaxation frequency provided improved the mitigation of membrane fouling. Compared with single F/R modulation, the combined modulation of biochar and F/R provided enhanced control over membrane fouling. Moreover, the addition of biochar altered the sludge properties of the reactor, thereby preventing the formation of a dense cake layer. Water vapor from respiration can severely accelerate the charge dissipation of the face mask, reducing filtration efficiency. Moreover, the foul odor from prolonged mask wear tends to make people remove their masks, leading to the risk of infection. In this study, an electro-blown spinning electroactive nanofibrous membrane (Zn/CB@PAN) with antibacterial and deodorization properties was prepared by adding zinc (Zn) and carbon black (CB) nanoparticles to the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, respectively. The filtration efficiency of Zn/CB@PAN for PM 0.3 was > 99% and could still maintain excellent durability within 4 h in a high-humidity environment (25 ℃ and RH = 95%). Moreover, the bacterial interception rate of the Zn/CB@PAN could reach 99.99%, and it can kill intercepted bacteria. In addition, the deodorization rate of Zn/CB@PAN in the moist state for acetic acid was 93.75% and ammonia was 95.23%, respectively. The excellent filtering, antibacterial, and deodorizing performance of Zn/CB@PAN can be attributed to the synergistic effect of breath-induced Zn/CB galvanic couples' electroactivity, released metal ions, and generated reactive oxygen species. This investigation assesses the embodied energy and carbon footprint in the manufacture of pavers using varying proportions of recycled Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW). Additionally, Thin Film Composite Polyamide fiber (TFC PA), extracted from end-of-life Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes, is introduced as an additive to enhance the concrete's strength. Machine learning techniques, namely Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and Response Surface Methodology (RSM), are employed to predict the mechanical properties of pavers. The study focuses on examining the energy required and embodied carbon in various mix proportions, as well as the mechanical properties-specifically compressive strength and split tensile strength of concrete with different CDW and TFC PA proportions. Findings reveal that the optimal percentage of TFC PA is 3 % for all CDW replacement proportions, resulting in low carbon content both in terms of energy and embodiment and in mechanical behavior. The implementation of ANN and SVR is conducted in MATLAB, while a Design Expert is employed to generate the experimental design for RSM. The RSM regression model demonstrates a robust correlation between variables and observed outcomes, with optimal p-values, R 2 values, and f-values. The ANN model successfully captures the variability in the data. Background: Medical equipment can become scarce in disaster scenarios. Prior work has reported that four sheep could be ventilated together on a single ventilator. Others found that this maneuver is possible when needed, but no one has yet investigated whether cross-contamination occurs in co-ventilated individuals., Objective: Our goal was to investigate whether an infection could spread between co-ventilated individuals., Methods: Four 2-L anesthesia bags were connected to a sterilized ventilator circuit that used heat and moisture exchange filters and bacterial and viral filters, as would be expected in this dire scenario. Serratia marcescens was inoculated into "lung" no. 1. After running for 24 h, each lung and three additional points in the circuit were cultured to see whether S. marcescens had spread. These cultures were examined at 24 and 48 h to assess for cross-contamination. Generation of renewable and clean electricity energy from ubiquitous moisture for the power supply of portable electronic devices has become one of the most promising energy collection methods. However, the modest electrical output and transient power supply characteristics of existing moist-electric generator (MEG) severely limit its commercial application, leading to an urgent demand of developing a MEG with high electrical output and continuous power generation capacity. In this work, it is demonstrated that a flexible bacterial cellulose (BC)/Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) double-layer (BM-dl) film prepared by vacuum filtration can maintain the moisture concentration difference in the film MEG. Unlike previous studies on cellulose based MEG, BM-dl film has a heterogeneous structure, resulting in a maximum output power density of 0.163 μW/cm 2 , an extreme voltage of 0.84 V, and current of 2.21 μA at RH = 90 %. BM-dl MEG can generate a voltage of 0.55 V continuously for 45 h in a natural environment (RH = 63-77 %, T = 26-27 °C), which is in a leading level among existing reported cellulose-based MEGs. A group of fluorinated organic molecules known as per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been commonly produced and circulated in the environment. PFAS, owing to multiple strong CF bonds, exhibit exceptional stability and possess a high level of resistance against biological or chemical degradation. Recently, PFAS have been identified to cause numerous hazardous effects on the biotic ecosystem. As a result, extensive efforts have been made in recent years to develop effective methods to remove PFAS. Adsorption, filtration, heat treatment, chemical oxidation/reduction, and soil washing are a few of the physicochemical techniques that have shown their ability to remove PFAS from contaminated matrixes. However these methods also carry significant drawbacks, including the fact that they are expensive, energy-intensive, unsuitable for in-situ treatment, and requirement to be carried under dormant conditions. The metabolic products released upon PFAS degradation are largely unknown, despite the fact that thermal disintegration methods are widely used. In contrast to physical and chemical methods, biological degradation of PFAS has been regarded as efficient method. However, PFAS are difficult to instantly and completely metabolize through biological methods due to the limitations of biocatalytic mechanisms. Nevertheless, cost, easy-to-operate and environmentally safe are some of the advantages over its counterpart. The present review comprehensively discusses the occurrence of PFAS, the state-of-the science of remediation technologies and approaches applied, and the remediation challenges. Hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pose a challenge to the removal efficiency in biotrickling filters (BTFs). The addition of relatively hydrophilic substances presents a promising approach for enhancing the elimination of hydrophobic VOCs. In this study, toluene was introduced into the BTF system alongside m-xylene, and their mixing ratios were changed to explore the interactions and mechanisms under different conditions. The result showed that the most pronounced synergistic interaction occurred when the mixing concentration ratio of m-xylene and toluene was 2:1. The removal efficiency (RE) of m-xylene increased from 88% to 97%, and the elimination capacity (EC) of m-xylene changed from 64 to 72 g m -3 h -1 . Under this condition, there was a notable increase in biomass, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) content, and relative hydrophobicity. Microbial diversity was enhanced observably with Berkeleyces and Mycobacterium potentially playing a positive role in co-degradation. Meanwhile, microbial metabolic function prediction indicated a significant enhancement in metabolic functions. Hazardous biological pathogens in the air pose a significant public environmental health concern as infected individuals emit virus-laden aerosols (VLAs) during routine respiratory activities. Mask-wearing is a key preventive measure, but conventional filtration methods face challenges, particularly in high humidity conditions, where electrostatic charge decline increases the risk of infection. This study introduces a bio-based air filter comprising glycine ionic liquids (GILs) and malleable polymer composite (GILP) with high polarity and functional group density, which are wrapped around a melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin skeleton, forming a conductive, porous GIL functionized ionic network air filter (GILP@MF). When subjected to low voltage, the GILP@MF composite efficiently captures VLAs including nanoscale virus particles through the enhanced electrostatic attraction, especially in facing high humidity bioaerosols exhaled by human body. The filtration/collection efficiency and quality factor can reach 98.3% and 0.264 Pa -1 at 0.1 m s -1 , respectively. We proposed a triple functional SERS substrate by immobilized Ag nanoparticles on the surface of filter paper. The high dense Ag nanoparticles were distributed on the SERS substrate via in-situ growth process. By optimizing the parameter in preparation process, the optimal filter paper SERS substrate was fabricated by using 30 mM of AgNO 3 with 20 S growth time. Due to capillary-effect wicking of cellulose fiber, the paper SERS substrate provide simple, fast and pump-free function for transferring analyte onto sharp tip through development of fluid. The fluid flow also brings target concentrate effect within the tip area. Furthermore, the separation feasibility was obtained during the development process of fluid. The preconcentrated effects not only enhanced the SERS signal of analyte, but also improve the fluorescence visible effect. The filter paper SERS substrate was successfully used for separating, concentrating and detecting Sudan dye from chili product, the detection limit could achieve 10 -6 M. Frequent oceanic oil spill incidents and the discharge of industrial oily wastewaters have caused serious threats to environments, food chains and human beings. Lignin wastes with many reactive groups exist as the byproducts from bioethanol and pulping processing industries, and they are either discarded as wastes or directly consumed as a fuel. To make full use of lignin wastes and simultaneously deal with oily wastewaters, porous lignin-based composites have been rationally designed and prepared. In this review, recent advances in the preparation of porous lignin-based composites are summarized in terms of aerogels, sponges, foams, papers, and membranes, respectively. Then, the mechanisms and the application of porous lignin-based adsorbents and filtration materials for oil/water separation are discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of porous lignin-based composites are proposed in the field of oil/water separation. The utilization of abundant lignin wastes can replace fossil resources, and meanwhile porous lignin-based composites can be used to efficiently treat with oily wastewaters. Alkaline pre-treatment is known to enhance the acid production efficiency of sludge but adversely affects its dewatering performance. In this study, the improvement of sludge dewaterability by a novel bioleaching system with inoculating domesticated acidified sludge (AS) and its underlying mechanism were investigated. The results showed that although the addition of Fe 2+ and the reduction of pH improved the dewatering performance of sludge, their effects were inferior to that of AS + Fe. The addition of AS and Fe 2+ significantly reduced the specific resistance to filtration and capillary suction time of the sludge by 98.6 % and 95.5 %, respectively. This improvement in dewatering performance was achieved through the combined actions of bio-acidification, bio-oxidation, and bio-flocculation. Remarkably, under alkaline pH, microorganisms in AS remained active, leading to the formation of iron-based bioflocculants, along with a rapid pH decrease. The scope of multifunctional surfaces in mechanical engineering and instrumentation is constantly expanding. Examples are products with multilayer coatings, products made of composite materials or using additive manufacturing technologies. A feature of multifunctional surfaces is two levels of texture with different parameter values. Various types of filters are used to decomposition and then analyze texture components. Traditionally, for such problems, a robust Gaussian regression filter and a morphological filter are used. The advantage of the morphological filter lies in the lower computational complexity and the ease of removing the shape component from the profile. This research presents generalized analysis of various types of an asymmetric morphological filter based on simulation. The asymmetric filter differs from the standard morphological filter by using different nesting indexes for combinations of morphological opening and closing operations. We have designed a compositional model of profile, which is superposition of two Gaussian distributions with different parameters and waviness. Relative filtering error of the arithmetic mean heights Ra was chosen as evaluation parameter. Based on the Monte Carlo experiments technique, the relative errors of the filters are determined. The main result of the research is algorithm for choosing nesting indexes depending on the type of primary profile. Thus, we give scientifically justified choice of the filter type and its task-specific parameters for applied use. The choice of filter type and two different nesting indexes in accordance with the developed algorithm provide relative error with a coverage interval less 3 % for 95 % coverage probability. The asymmetric morphological filter is effective for scale space analysis of surfaces with significant shape errors and waviness. Optimizing nanoplastics (NPs) removal performance of rapid sand filter (RSF) in water treatment plants is significant for NP pollution prevention and remediation. This study investigated the application prospect of natural granular manganese sand, zeolite and limestone in RSF for NP removal through column experiments. Pristine, amino-modified, and carboxyl-modified polystyrene NPs (100 nm) were selected as experimental subjects. Quartz sand filter showed negligible NP removal, zeolite and manganese sand showed no obvious optimization on NP filtration. Limestone amended RSF significantly enhanced the removal of three NPs, the removal efficiency increased with decreasing size and increasing limestone grains dosage. The excellent performance of limestone was attributed to its special physicochemical properties in terms of synthetical action of electrostatic interaction, cationic bridging and especially the surface roughness morphology, and the mechanisms overcame the influence of functional groups of NPs. The increasingly complex oily wastewater has become a severe environmental issue worldwide, calling for the eco-friendly methods toward multifunctionality, high efficiency and sustainability. This work presents a superwetting alginate-based aerogels prepared by a feasible mineralization without the assistance of intermediates. In this strategy, in-situ grown β-FeOOH nanoparticles on whole porous alginate aerogels, not only provides the hierarchical topography and more -OH groups, enhancing underwater oleophobicity (152 ± 4.4°) and fouling resistance of porous aerogels, but also endows with the outstanding photo-Fenton self-cleaning ability for pollutant degradation. As a result, the outstanding separation selectivity for oil and water (>99.5 %), and superior reusability is achieved without the significant diminution of permeation ability (897-1136 L·m -2 ·h -1 ). Ester-based drilling fluids (EBDF) are preferred over oil-based drilling fluids (OBDF) and water-based drilling fluids (WBDF) because of their great biodegradability, low toxicity, and improved performance. In this work, waste cooking oil methyl ester (WCOME) was used to prepare an environmentally friendly EBDF. Through a transesterification process utilizing a modified calcium oxide based heterogenous catalyst, the waste cooking oil is transformed into waste cooking oil methyl ester. Response surface approach was used to strengthen the transesterification. The optimize conditions for CaO/Al 2 O 3 resulted in the highest yield of 96.56% at a molar ratio of 11.9:1, 3.19 wt % of CaO/Al 2 O 3 , 53.79 °C, and 76.86 min. In contrast, CaO/TiO 2 yielded 98.15% at a molar ratio of 11.99:1, with a CaO/TiO 2 of 2.53 wt % at 59.79 in 68.14 min. Additionally, two separate densities of 9 ppg and 12 ppg EBDF are formulated with two distinct oil-to-water ratios (70:30 and 80:20) using synthesized WCOME. To assess the effectiveness of formulated EBDF thorough rheological investigation is conducted at 150°. Additionally, the filtration loss at HPHT conditions, emulsion stability, and Barite sag analysis of the drilling fluid are all analyzed at before ageing and after dynamic ageing. With better rheological features, less fluid loss, good emulsion stability, and minimal barite sagging, the designed EBDF performs efficiently. Dredging of lake sediment is a method to remove accumulated phosphorus and nitrogen in lakes and thereby reducing the risk of eutrophication. After dredging, the sediment is dewatered to reduce the volume. It is important to get a high dry matter content and ensure that the filtrate does not contain harmful compounds so it can be returned to the lake. A pilot-scale belt filter and flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBC) were used for dewatering lake sediment with the sediment treated with a synthetic polymer or three different biopolymers. The goal of the study was to retain the phosphorus in the filter cake while returning the filtrate to the lake with a minimal phosphorus content. Results showed dry matter content of up to 16 % in the dewatered sediment and the sediment retained 96-99 % of the phosphorus. Furthermore, nitrogen was reduced by 27-71 % in the filtrate water. Toxicity tests found low ecotoxicity for most biopolymer filtrates, whereas synthetic polymer showed the highest potential ecotoxicity. The application of natural small molecule (NSM) in electrospun fibers is the key to achieving powerful functionality and sustainable development. However, the lack of understanding regarding the mechanism for loading NSM hinders the advancement of high-performance functional fibers. This work clarified the loading mechanism of NSM in polymer solution by comparing the different behaviors of curcumin (Cur), phloretin (PL), and tea polyphenols (TP) blended ethyl cellulose (EC) solutions. We found that TP may lead to the folding of polymer chains due to its strongest hydrogen bond, which in turn promoted the dispersion of TP along the polymer chain. Therefore, TP could achieve good electrospinnability at the highest loading capacity (16 times the Cur and 4 times the PL). Finally, chitosan was introduced into EC/TP to prepare tree-like nanofibers, achieving high-performance antibacterial air filtration. The filtration efficiency for 0.3 μm NaCl particles, pressure drop, and quality factor were 99.991 %, 85.5 Pa, and 0.1089 Pa -1 , respectively. The bacteriostatic rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were all 99.99 %. Microplastic particles in arable soil are expected to impact the environment and potentially human health. The application of municipal biosolids (MBs) to agricultural land presents a further dilemma in that biosolids act as a fertilizer for crop growth, and a disposal pathway for wastewater treatment plants. They are also a direct path for emerging contaminants, such as microplastics to enter the terrestrial environment. Reliable methods are needed to identify and quantify microplastics, found in agricultural soils to determine how microplastics are being cycled in the terrestrial environment. In this study, we developed a method for extracting microplastics from soil, and characterized their composition and identity for particles sized 5 μm to 2 mm. Method development was initially completed using natural soils spiked with microplastics and MBs, followed by the analyses of soil sampled from an agricultural field where MBs were recently applied at a rate of 13 tons dw/ha. The procedures that used the spiked samples showed that microplastics can be reliably extracted from soil in a laboratory setting, and identified and semi-quantified by thermogravimetric analysis combined with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA-FTIR). However, when the same methods were applied to the soil samples collected from the agricultural field, reproducibility became a challenge, as the number and type of microplastics changed even within the same soils (i.e., collected the same day from the same exact location). The variation in reproducibility observed between laboratory and field samples underscores the significant heterogeneity present in the environment. The separation behavior of a variety of emerging contaminants, including nine antibiotics and six estrogens commonly reported in natural environment, by four commercial nanofiltration and reverse osmosis (NF/RO) membranes at various water conditions (pH, concentration) was investigated. The contaminant rejection at pH 6.0 followed a decreasing trend of XLE (94%-100%) ≈ NF90 (88%-100%) ＞ NF270 (25%-85%) ＞ DL (16%-75%). The dense structures of NF90 and XLE reflected by their small effective pore radii (0.30-0.31 nm) contributed mainly to their high rejection, demonstrating the important role of size exclusion. For the negatively charged loose NF270 and DL membranes (0.40-0.45 nm), charge repulsion made additional contribution, which is markedly reflected by their greater rejection to charged antibiotics than neutral estrogens (45%-85% vs. 25%-60% by NF270). The correlation between rejection data and normalized molecular sizes at pH 4.0 and 9.0 intuitively demonstrated the individual role of size exclusion and charge repulsion. The adsorption by membranes was mainly responsible for the initial compound reduction in feedwater by 6%-25% within 3 h, while only 0.3%-5.6% was attributed to self-degradation. The adsorption capacity was determined, which might be mainly governed by hydrophobic interaction. Facemasks play a significant role as personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic, but their longevity is limited by the easy dissipation of electrostatic charge and the accumulation of bacteria. In this study, nanofibrous membranes composed of polyacrylonitrile and chitosan biguanide hydrochloride (PAN@CGH) with remarkable antibacterial characteristics were prepared through the coaxial electrospinning process. Particulate matter could be efficiently captured by the fibrous membrane, up to 98 % or more, via polarity-dominated forces derived from cyano and amino groups. As compared commercial N95 masks, the PAN@CGH was more resistant to a wider variety of disinfection protocols. Additionally, the nanofibrous membrane could kill >99.99 % of both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Based on these characteristics, PAN@CGH nanofibrous membrane was applied to facial mask, which possessed an excellent and long-lasting effect on the capture of airborne particles. In recent years, the safety of public health has attracted more and more attention. In order to avoid the spread of bacteria and reduce the diseases caused by their invasion of the human body, novel filtration and antibacterial materials have attracted more and more attention. In this work, the antibacterial agents silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and cetylpyridine bromide (CPB) were introduced into a cellulose acetate (CA) nanofiber film by electrospinning technology to prepare CA-based composite films with good antibacterial and filtration properties. The results of the antibacterial test of the composite nanofiber films showed that AgNPs and CPB had synergistic antibacterial effects and exhibited good antibacterial properties against a variety of bacteria. In addition, in vitro cytotoxicity, skin irritation and skin sensitization experiments proved that the CA/AgNPs, CA/CPB and CA/CPB/AgNPs films produced no skin irritation or sensitization in the short term. These are expected to become potential materials for the preparation of new antibacterial masks. Deterministic Lateral Displacement (DLD) device has gained widespread recognition and trusted for filtering blood cells. However, there remains a crucial need to explore the complex interplay between deformable cells and flow within the DLD device to improve its design. This paper presents an approach utilizing a mesoscopic cell-level numerical model based on dissipative particle dynamics to effectively capture this complex phenomenon. To establish the model's credibility, a series of numerical simulations were conducted and the numerical results were validated with nominal experimental data from the literature. These include single cell stretching experiment, comparisons of the morphological characteristics of cells in DLD, and comparison the specific row-shift fraction of DLD required to initiate the zigzag mode. Additionally, we investigate the effect of cell rigidity, which serves as an indicator of cell health, on average flow velocity, trajectory, and asphericity. Moreover, we extend the existing theory of predicting zigzag mode for solid spherical particles to encompass the behavior of red blood cells. Stormwater biofilters demonstrate promising treatment of faecal microorganisms, however performance can vary with design and operational conditions. This study investigated whether plants with significant documented antimicrobial activity could improve faecal bacterial treatment within biofilters. Laboratory-scale biofilters (n = 30) were dosed with synthetic stormwater containing faecal bacteria Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Campylobacter jejuni under south-eastern Australian climatic conditions. Systems vegetated with Melaleuca species, renowned for their in vitro antimicrobial activity, consistently enhanced removal of all tested culturable bacteria in total outflow and submerged zone water relative to other plant configurations. Within just 1-2 days of stormwater dosing, M. linariifolia submerged zones demonstrated significantly reduced bacterial concentrations compared to C. appressa (p = 0.023 and <0.001 for C. jejuni and E. coli, respectively), removing ∼1.47 log 10 MPN/100 mL E. coli, ∼1.14 log 10 MPN/100 mL E. faecalis and ∼0.81 log 10 MPN/L C. jejuni from inflow. These trends continued even after all but one M. linariifolia replicate perished during an extended drying period (p = 0.002 and 0.003 for C. jejuni and E. coli, respectively). Through a systematic process of elimination, these observations were attributed to enhanced bacterial attenuation with elevated plant inhibitory activity. Cumulative biofilter age reinforced plant-mediated bacterial treatment (p = 0.023 for E. faecalis), ostensibly due to increased plant size/growth and net biological activity. Notably, E. coli and E. faecalis attenuation improved with prolonged antecedent drying length (14 vs. 4 days; p < 0.0001 for both), while the converse was observed for C. jejuni (not significant). Functionalization of bio-based nanofibers is the development tendency of high-performance air filter. However, the conventional structural optimization strategy based on high solution conductivity greatly hinders the development of fully bio-based air filter, and not conducive to sustainable development. This work fabricated fully bio-based nanofibrous membrane with formaldehyde-adsorbable and antibacterial capabilities by electrospinning low-conductivity solution for high-performance air filtration and applied to lightweight mask. The "water-like" ethyl cellulose (EC) was selected as the base polymer to "nourish" functional materials of gelatin (GE), β-cyclodextrin (βCD), and curcumin (Cur), thus forming a solution system with high binding energy differences and electrospinning into ultrafine bimodal nanofibers. The filtration efficiency for 0.3 μm NaCl particles, pressure drop, and quality factor were 99.25 %, 53 Pa, and 0.092 Pa -1 , respectively; the bacteriostatic rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were 99.9 % and 99.4 %, respectively; the formaldehyde adsorption capacity was 442 μg/g. This is the first report on antibacterial and formaldehyde-adsorbable high-performance air filter entirely made from bio-based materials. The development of membranes for protein purification has stringent requirement of disinfection resistance, low protein adsorption and anti-fouling, without changing protein structure. In this study, hydrophilic titanium dioxide (TiO 2 )/calcium alginate (TiO 2 /CaAlg) hydrogel membranes were prepared by a simple ionic cross-linking method. The effects of the porogenic agent polyethylene glycol (PEG) concentration, the molecular weight of PEG, and the concentration of TiO 2 on the filtration properties were systematically investigated. The TiO 2 /CaAlg membrane exhibited excellent bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection and anti-fouling properties. The mechanical properties and surface energy of the TiO 2 /CaAlg membrane were significantly improved. The chemical bonding mechanism of TiO 2 and NaAlg was investigated by molecular dynamic simulation. The TiO 2 /CaAlg membrane had good chlorine resistance and could be disinfected or cleaned with sodium hypochlorite. The TiO 2 /CaAlg hydrogel membrane loaded with polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) nanofibers maintained high flux (136.7 L/m 2 h) and high BSA rejection (98.0 %) at 0.1 MPa. The results of circular dichroism and synchronous fluorescence indicated that the secondary structure of BSA was maintained after membrane separation. Developing effective and sensitive detection methods for antimicrobial resistant Salmonella enterica from surface water is a goal of the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS). There are no specified methods for recovery of S. enterica in surface waters in the U.S. A multi-laboratory evaluation of four methods - bulk water enrichment (BW), vertical Modified Moore Swab (VMMS), modified Standard Method 9260.B2 (SM), and dead-end ultrafiltration (DEUF) - was undertaken to recover S. enterica from surface water. In Phase 1, one-liter volumes of water were collected from the same site on five different dates. Water was shipped and analyzed at four different laboratory locations (A, B, C, and D) for recovery of 1) inoculated fluorescent S. Typhimurium strain (ca. 30 CFU/L) and 2) Salmonella present in the water sampled. At each location, BW, VMMS, or SM recovery was performed on five separate 1 L water samples. Twenty 1 L water samples were subjected to each recovery method, and overall, sixty 1 L samples were assayed for Salmonella. Inoculated, fluorescent Salmonella Typhimurium and environmental Salmonella spp. were recovered from 65 % (39/60) and 45 % (27/60) of water samples, respectively. BW, VMMS, and SM recovered fluorescent S. Typhimurium from 60 %, 60 %, and 75 % of inoculated samples, respectively. Analysis by Chi-squared test determined laboratory location had a significant (p < 0.05) effect on fluorescent S. Typhimurium recovery compared to method or date of water collection. In Phase 2, recovery of inoculated fluorescent S. Typhimurium from 1 L samples by SM and DEUF was compared at laboratory locations B and D. SM and DEUF recovered fluorescent S. Typhimurium from 100 % (20/20) and 95 % (19/20) of inoculated water samples, respectively; laboratory location (p > 0.05) did not affect Salmonella recovery. Freeze-thawing (F/T) is an effective method of sludge dewatering preconditioning and has been studied in many studies. However, previous studies have taken landfill sludge from different regions, filled for different length of time or at different depth, resulting in large differences in initial water content and different treatment effects. Therefore, the effect of initial water content on the dewatering characteristics of F/T preconditioned landfill sludge has been investigated. The sludge with different initial water contents was firstly preconditioned by one F/T cycle. Then the F/T sludge was vacuum filtered and compared with the dewatering performance of FeCl 3 preconditioned sludge with the same water content. Finally, the mechanism of the initial water content on the effect of F/T preconditioning was analyzed by the change of sludge internal composition. The results show that the higher the initial water content of the sludge, the greater the improvement of its dewatering performance after F/T preconditioning. The specific resistance and water content after filtration of sludge after F/T conditioning decreased greatly with the increase of the initial water content, reaching their respective minimum values of 13.3 × 10 12  m/kg and 58.3% at 85% and 87.5%. These values are lower than the optimal values observed for the sludge conditioned by FeCl 3 . With the rise in initial water content, the driving force at the ice-water interface gains strength. Small particles aggregate into larger flocs, forming stable drainage channels that enhance the dewatering performance of sludge. Membrane fouling is a major challenge which limits the sustainable application of membrane filtration-based microalgal harvesting at industrial level. Membrane fouling leads to increased operational and maintenance costs and represents a major obstacle to microalgal downstream processing. Nano-clays are promising naturally occurring nanoparticles in membrane fabrication due to their low-cost, facile preparation, and their superior properties in terms of surface hydrophilicity, mechanical stability, and resistance against chemicals. The membrane surface modification using nano-clays is a sustainable promising approach to improve membranes mechanical properties and their fouling resistance. However, the positive effects of nano-clay particles on membrane fouling are often limited by aggregation and poor adhesion to the base polymeric matrix. This review surveys the recent efforts to achieve anti-fouling behavior using membrane surface modification with nano-clay fillers.
