Nitrogen (N) plays a crucial role in forage yield. However, excessive application of N fertilizers in agricultural production not only increases the production cost but also leads to serious environmental problems. Therefore, mining low-N tolerant oat germplasm is important for the sustainable development of grass and pasture. Relevant physiological indices of five oat germplasm were measured and analyzed in the seedling leaves under low-nitrogen culture conditions, aiming to identify important physiological indices suitable for screening low-nitrogen-tolerant oat and to rank the low-nitrogen-tolerance ability of each oat variety. The results showed that the physiological indexes of oats under low-nitrogen conditions were significantly different from those under normal culture conditions, and the total root length, total nitrogen, photosynthesis index, and NR enzyme activity of leaves in the five oat germplasm showed a decreasing trend, while the proline, MDA, SOD, POD, and GS enzyme activities showed an increasing trend, but the magnitude of changes in the physiological indexes varied among different varieties. By analyzing the physiological indexes, the photosynthetic index and antioxidant enzyme activities were found to be important in assessing the ability of oats to tolerate low nitrogen and therefore can be used as important indexes for screening oats for low nitrogen tolerance. The results of the comprehensive analysis showed that the order of low-N tolerance of each variety was as follows: Qingyongjiu 035> Jiayan No.2> Qingyin No.2> ZNY255> ZNY256, and the results of the present study provide a reference for the further large-scale screening of low-N-tolerant oat resources and the selection of varieties.

Long-term storage of crop seeds is critical for the conservation of germplasm resources, ensuring food supply, and supporting sustainable production. Rice, as a major food staple, has a substantial stock for consumption and production worldwide. However, its food value and seed viability tend to decline during storage. Understanding the physiological responses and molecular mechanisms of aging tolerance forms the basis for enhancing seed storability in rice. This review outlines the latest progress in influential factors, evaluation methods, and identification indices of seed storability. It also discusses the physiological consequences, molecular mechanisms, and strategies for breeding aging-tolerant rice in detail. Finally, it highlights challenges in seed storability research that require future attention. This review offers a theoretical foundation and research direction for uncovering the mechanisms behind seed storability and breeding aging-tolerant rice.

Essential oils with β-caryophyllene, citral, and linalool as key compounds often exhibit some anti-anxiety like effects in aromatherapy. However, evidence of the effect of these three compounds through human inhalation remains limited. It is worth exploring their potential anxiolytic effect through the olfactory pathway, and finding out whether the three compounds lead to different physiological responses. A total of 48 subjects were randomly assigned to three odor (β-caryophyllene, citral, and linalool) inhalation groups and one control (odorless jojoba oil) group. Stress stimulation was induced using n-back and mental arithmetic tasks. The odor was administered before the task test session. Assessments including the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), electroencephalogram (EEG) activities, facial expressions, several physiological indicators, and a self-report scale of subjective perception of the odor environments were carried out. The changes before and after inhalation, as well as the inter-group differences, were analyzed. Both β-caryophyllene and citral inhalation led to a significant decrease in anxiety levels, while only β-caryophyllene resulted in a notable reduction across both sub-scales of STAI. Following the odor inhalation, heart rate significantly decreased in all three groups, with the β-caryophyllene group exhibiting the most pronounced decline. While the systolic blood pressure of the linalool group demonstrated a statistically significant difference. Regarding facial expressions, β-caryophyllene significantly increased the ratio of 'Happiness' and decreased the ratio of ‘Fear'. In the non-task state, citral reduced the power of frontal alpha, delta, and theta waves while β-caryophyllene had a similar effect. All odor inhalation groups showed increased delta and theta waves after the task compared with the control group, with the β-caryophyllene group having notably lower frontal beta waves. β-Caryophyllene and citral exhibited good anti-anxiety effects. Subjects receiving different odors showed different EEG and physiological responses, indicating the differences in emotional regulation ways among the three compounds.

The extensive use of sulfonylurea herbicides has raised major concerns regarding their long-term soil residues and agroecological risks despite their role in agricultural protection. Microbial degradation is an important approach to remove sulfonylureas, whereas understanding the associated biodegradation mechanisms, enzymes, and physiological responses remains incomplete. Based on the rapid biodegradation of nicosulfuron by typical fungal isolate Talaromyces flavus LZM1, the dependency on cellular accumulation and environmental conditions, e.g. pH and nutrient supplies, was shown in the study. The biodegradation of nicosulfuron occurred intracellularly and followed the cascade of reactions including hydrolysis, Smile contraction rearrangement, hydroxylation, and opening of the pyrimidine ring. Besides 2-amino-4,6-dimethoxypyrimidine (ADMP) and 2-aminosulfonyl-N,N-dimethylnicotinamide (ASDM), numerous products and intermediates were newly identified and the structural forms of methoxypyrimidine and sulfonylurea bridge contraction rearrangement are predicted to be more toxic than nicosulfuron. The biodegradation should be enzymatically regulated by glycosylphosphatidylinositol transaminase (GPI-T) and P450s, which were manifested with the significant upregulation in proteomics. It is the first time that the hydrolysis of nicosulfuron into ADMP and ASDM have been associated with GPI-T. The integrated pathways of biodegradation were further elucidated through the involvement of various active enzymes. Except for the enzymatic catalysis, the physiological responses verified by metabolo-proteomics were critical not only to regulate material synthesis, uptake, utilization, and energy transfer but also to maintain antioxidant homeostasis, biodegradability, and tolerance of nicosulfuron by the differentially expressed metabolites, such as acetolactate synthase and 3-isopropylmalate dehydratase. The obtained results would help understand the biodegradation mechanism of sulfonylurea from chemicobiology and enzymology and promote the use of fungal biodegradation in pollution rehabilitation.

Heat stress (HS) occurs when animals are enable to effectively dissipate excessive body heat, potentially affecting their welfare and productivity. Several tools can be used to mitigate HS in dairy cows. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of thermoregulatory mineral supplementation on dairy cows’ physiological response to HS and reproductive status. Thirty pluriparous Holstein dairy cows (2.8 ± 0.3 lactation), from a semi confinement production system (freestall barn), were enrolled in a 35 days duration experiment, and divided into two groups: 15 cows receiving a thermoregulatory mineral mixture containing calcium, sodium, chlorine, and potassium (200 g/day; TRT); and, 15 cows that did not receive any type of supplement (CON). Data on respiration rates (RR), rectal temperature (RT), milk yield, barn temperature, relative humidity, and temperature and humidity index (THI) were obtained on weekly evaluations (D7, D14, D21, D28, and D35). ANOVA and correlation analysis were used to compare variables between groups, and physiological and climate variables, regardless of group. Related to farm's protocols, on D0 and D35, all cows were submitted to US evaluation and categorized as inseminated, pregnant, and not pregnant, and this data analysed using Fisher's exact test. Cows in the TRT group had lower RT, compared to the CON group (38,8 °C and 39,0 °C, respectively; P = 0.0147), however both averages were within physiological range. As to physiological variables, stronger positive correlations were found between RR and RT with barn temperature and THI. In this study, the thermoregulatory mineral supplement did not significantly affect physiological responses to HS or reproductive status.

The postharvest decay of chestnuts (Castanea mollissima Blume) limits their industrial utilization, and pathogenic fungi are the main cause for chestnut decay. In this study, the physiological changes and their correlation with the rotting degree of chestnuts were investigated during single or mixed infection by Fusarium proliferatum, Penicillium crustosum, and Alternaria alternata. During the infection period, the activities of cell wall degrading enzymes (CWDEs) and antioxidant enzymes firstly increased and then decreased, the contents of nutrients decreased, but the levels of physiological indexes increased. The mycelium and spores of pathogenic fungi colonized the intercellular space, and then the mycelium covered the entire tissue surface of chestnuts, leading to the disappearance of cell structure. Notably, the most prominent changes in physiological indexes and ultrastructure were observed in chestnuts infected with three pathogenic fungi. Furthermore, the rotting degree of chestnuts was positively correlated with the levels of CWDEs, antioxidant enzymes and malondialdehyde.

Leaf rolling (LR) is one of the defensive mechanisms that plants have developed against adverse environmental conditions. LR is a typical drought response, promoting drought resistance in various gramineae species, including wheat, maize, and rice. Rice cultivation faces the formidable challenge of water deprivation because of its high water requirements, which leads to drought-related symptoms in rice. LR is an important morphological characteristic that plays a key role in controlling water loss during water insufficiency, thereby regulating leaf area and stature, which are crucial agronomic traits determining yield criteria. Bulliform, sclerenchyma, mesophyll, and vascular bundles are the cells that engage in LR and commonly exhibit adaxial or abaxial types of rolling in rice. The specific genes linked to rolling, either adaxially or abaxially, are discussed here. In addition to the factors influencing LR, here is a short review of the morphological, physiological and molecular responses of this adaptation under drought stress. Moreover, this review highlights how LR combats the consequences of drought stress. The eco-physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying this morphological adaptation in rice should be further explored, as they might be useful in dealing with various degrees of drought tolerance.

Compound pollution with cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) is common in nature. The effects of compounded Cd and Zn on the growth and development of Iris pseudacorus in the environment and the plant’s potential to remediate heavy metals in the environment remain unclear. In this study, the effects of single and combined Cd and Zn stress on I. pseudacorus growth and the enrichment of heavy metals in I. pseudacorus seedlings were investigated. The results showed that under Cd (160 μM) and Zn (800 μM) stress, plant growth was significantly inhibited and photosynthetic performance was affected. Cd+Zn200 (160 μM + 200 μM) reduced the levels of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and non-protein thiols by 31.29%, 53.20%, and 13.29%, respectively, in the aboveground tissues compared with levels in the single Cd treatment. However, Cd+Zn800 (160 μM + 800 μM) had no effect. Cd and Zn800 inhibited the absorption of mineral elements, while Zn200 had little effect on plants. Compared with that for Cd treatment alone, Cd + Zn200 and Cd+Zn800 reduced the Cd content in aboveground tissues by 54.15% and 49.92%, respectively, but had no significant effect on Cd in the root system. Zn significantly reduced the Cd content in subcellular components and limited the content and proportion of Cd extracted using water and ethanol. These results suggest that a low supply of Zn reduces Cd accumulation in aboveground tissues by promoting antioxidant substances and heavy metal chelating agents, thus protecting the photosynthetic systems. The addition of Zn also reduced the mobility and bioavailability of Cd to alleviate its toxicity in I. pseudacorus.

Among the oil-seed crops, Sesamum indicum L. is an important nutritionally rich crop, well adapted to grow in semi-arid regions. Waterlogging stress adversely affects the growth of sesame by limiting diffused oxygen availability in soil and generating hypoxic, subsequently anoxic conditions. The present study aimed to screen the 1,006 accessions for waterlogging stress response at the seedling stage to identify the most tolerant and susceptible genotype. The investigation revealed that, 48 h of stress are detrimental and 10 days post-waterlogging impede crop survival. The screened accessions were narrowed down by 8 to detect the morphological alterations, and the morphological characteristics such as shoot height, root length, SPAD, branches per plant and relative water content r) were significantly higher in check and EC377024. Enzymatic (SOD, CAT and APX) and non-enzymatic (TFC, TPC, DPPH, FRAP, TAA, MDA and proline) antioxidant activity was notably higher in check and EC377024 and lower in IC129289. DAB and NBT assay confirmed lower damages from free radicals in EC377024 compared to IC129289. Moreover, contrasting gene expression profiling of free radicals (POD and RBOHC), carbohydrate metabolism (SuSy2 and StSy1), phosphate group gene (PSRG), and plant hormone (ERF RAP 2–7, ACC) confirmed the tolerance in EC377024 under waterlogging stress conditions. Besides, metabolomics study in EC377024 at control and 48 h of waterlogging stress indicate the significant accumulated metabolites in fatty acid (decanoate), carbohydrate, amino acid, Shikimate, MEP (5-enolpyruvoyl-shikimate-3-phosphate) Krebs cycle and Xanthophyll pathways. This comprehensive combination of morpho-physiological, biochemical, molecular and metabolomic characterizations highlight the stress responsive mechanisms between the tolerant (EC377024) and susceptible (IC129289) genotypes.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a feed crop due to its rich nutrition and high productivity. The utilization of titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) brings benefits to agricultural production but also has potential hazards. To investigate the duality and related mechanism of TiO2 NPs on alfalfa, its different doses including 0, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 mg L− 1 (CK, Ti-50, Ti-100, Ti-200, Ti-500, and Ti-1000) were sprayed on leaves. The results showed that greater doses of TiO2 NPs (500 and 1000 mg L−1) negatively affected the physiological parameters, including morphology, biomass, leaf ultrastructure, stomata, photosynthesis, pigments, and antioxidant ability. However, 100 mg L−1 TiO2 NPs revealed an optimal positive effect; compared with the CK, it dramatically increased plant height, fresh weight, and dry weight by 22%, 21%, and 41%, respectively. Additionally, TiO2 NPs at low doses significantly protected leaf tissue, promoted stomatal opening, and enhanced the antioxidant system; while higher doses had phytotoxicity. Hence, TiO2 NPs are dose-dependent on alfalfa. The transcriptomic analysis identified 4625 and 2121 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the comparison of CK vs. Ti-100 and CK vs. Ti-500, respectively. They were mainly enriched in photosynthesis, chlorophyll metabolism, and energy metabolism. Notably, TiO2 NPs-induced phytotoxicity on photosynthetic parameters happened concurrently with the alterations of the genes involved in the porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism and carbon fixation in photosynthetic organisms in the KEGG analysis. Similarly, it affected the efficiency of alfalfa energy transformation processes, including pyruvate metabolism and chlorophyll synthesis. Several key related genes in these pathways were validated. Therefore, TiO2 NPs have positive and toxic effects by regulating morphology, leaf ultrastructure, stomata, photosynthesis, redox homeostasis, and genes related to key pathways. It is significant to understand the duality of TiO2 NPs and cultivate varieties resistant to nanomaterial pollution.

The exploration for effective in-feed additives is growing owing to the global climatic change trend to alleviate the negative effects of heat stress in laying hens. This research assessed the potential of using B-glucan (G) as an antiheat stress agent in Matrouh laying hens subjected to early heat shock programs during the growing period. Factorial design (3 × 3) was used, including 3 levels of heat stress (control, heat shock at 3 d and at 3 d and 8 wk of age) and 3 levels of β-glucan (0, 100, and 200 mg β-glucan /kg diet). During the first 12 wk of egg production (EP), treatments were exposed to heat challenge. The results revealed that heat shock program applications at 3 d and 8 wk of age significantly decreased body weight at 36 wk of age (P < 0.05) and reduced (P < 0.05) feed intake (FI). While significantly (P < 0.05) improved feed conversion ratio (FCR), hemoglobin, RBCs, WBCs, immunoglobulin M (IgM), immunoglobulin G (IgG), and Heat shock protein (HSP70) of the Liver (P < 0.01) as compared with the control group. At the same time, there was a decrease in lymphocyte%, H/L ratio, cortisol, and T3 compared to the thermo-neutral control. When compared to the control group, hens fed a diet containing 200 mg of βG significantly (P < 0.05) improved body weight at 16 wk and final weight at 36 wk, feed conversion (FCR) (g. feed/g. egg mass), hen-day egg production, and egg mass, as well as the digestibility coefficients of crude protein (CP), dry matter (DM), metabolizable energy (ME), and cortisol. The interactions between heat chock programs and βG levels were nonsignificant for the most studied traits except daily feed intake. Therefore, the early heat shock exposure 2 times and supplementation of Β-glucan (βG) at 200 mg/kg diet during the growth period for laying hens that are exposed to heat stress during the reproductive period could improve productive, reproductive performance, HSP70 level and enhance immunity responses.

Microplastics (MP) are harmful, causing stress in aquatic species and acting as carriers of hydrophobicity. In aquatic environments, benzo[α]pyrene (BaP) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical that accumulates in the body and causes toxic reactions in living organisms. We investigated the effects of single and combined microbead (MB) and BaP environments on goldfish antioxidant response and apoptosis. For 120 h, goldfish were exposed to single (MB10, MB100, and BaP5) and combined (MB10+BaP5 and MB100+BaP5) environments of 10 and 100 beads/L of 0.2 µm polystyrene MB and 5 µg/L BaP. We measured MB and BaP bioaccumulation as well as plasma parameters including ALT, AST, and glucose. The level of oxidative stress was determined by evaluating lipid peroxidation (LPO) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in plasma, as well as antioxidant-related genes for superoxide dismutase and catalase (SOD and CAT) and caspase-3 (Casp3) mRNA expression in liver tissue. The TUNEL assay was used to examine SOD in situ hybridization and apoptosis in goldfish livers. Except for the control group, plasma LPO levels increased at the end of the exposure period in all experimental groups. TAC increased up to 24 h of exposure and then maintained a similar level until the trial ended. SOD, CAT, and Casp3 mRNA expression increased substantially up to 120 h as the exposure concentration and time increased. The TUNEL assay revealed more signals and apoptotic signals in the combined exposure environments as a consequence of SOD in situ hybridization than in single exposure environments. These results suggest that combined exposure to toxic substances causes oxidative stress in organisms, which leads to apoptosis.

Water stress is an important factor affecting herb quality and yield and exogenous spermidine (Spd) addition can enhance dehydration tolerance of plants. Anoectochilus roxburghii (Wall.) Lindl is a perennial herb widely used in medicine, health care, and beauty industry, yet, its dehydration resistance remains largely unknown. In this view, the current research aimed at elucidating the drought resistance mechanism of A. roxburghii under PEG-induced water stress at different levels (10%, 20%, and 30% PEG6000). In particular, the morphological, physiological, and biochemical changes occurring in leaves treated with (0.5 mM, 5 mM) or without Spd were discussed under moderate water stress (20% PEG6000). Results showed that water stress significantly inhibited the growth of A. roxburghii by decreasing the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), arginine decarboxylase (ADC), S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (SAMDC), and polyamine oxidase (PAO). The contents of soluble protein, soluble proline, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialdehyde (MDA), and the relative conductivity (REC) of leaves increased by 27.32%, 31.37%, 68.84%, 103.61%, and 63.64%, respectively. Under dehydration condition, foliar spraying Spd effectively improved plant growth with the contents of soluble protein and soluble proline increased, while the H2O2, REC, and MDA contents decreased. The SOD activity of 0.5 mM and 5 mM treatments were 1.13 and 1.01 times higher than only 20% PEG treatment, respectively. Similarly, the POD activity of 0.5 mM and 5 mM treatments increased by 52.82% and 34.11%, while the CAT activity of 0.5 mM and 5 mM treatments increased by 34.39 and 33.15 U/mgprot, respectively. In addition, exogenous Spd application significantly increased the key enzyme activities of polyamine metabolism (ADC, SAMDC, and PAO) under moderate water stress. In conclusion, exogenous Spd addition with low concentration (0.5 mM) improved the resistance of A. roxburghii against water stress by increasing the antioxidant enzymes activities and endogenous polyamines contents. This study helps to the understanding of dehydration resistance of A. roxburghii and provide guidelines for its cultivation under water deficit condition.

Applying microbial fertilizer to assist phytoremediation using high production energy crops is a promising method to improve the removal efficiency of metals contaminated soils. The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Earth Total Support (ETS, a complex microbial agent) in enhancing the phytoremediation of Arsenic (As) in soils using Arundo donax L, which were grown in mesocosms with As at 20 mg kg-1. The results showed that the addition of ETS significantly increase the biomass of A. donax L by 27.27 %–37.04 %. Additionally, ETS was found to mitigate the adverse effects of As stress on A. donax L by enhancing net photosynthetic rate and transpiration, increasing the activities of superoxide dismutases and peroxidases, and decreased malondialdehyde content. Moreover, the addition of ETS led to a 99.25 % increase in As content in roots and a 7.10 % increase in stems. These findings suggest that ETS agents hold promise in improving the remediation efficiency of low concentration As contaminated soil by significantly increasing the biomass of A. donax and facilitating As extraction.

The avocado cv. Hass is one of the most dynamic fruits in the world and is of particular significance in tropical areas, where climate variability phenomena have a high impact on productivity and sustainability. Nanotechnology-based tools could be an alternative to mitigate and/or adapt plants to these phenomena. Our approach was based on identifying changes in temperature and precipitation associated with climate variability in avocado areas in Colombia and proposing mitigation strategies based on the use of nanotechnology. This study had two objectives: (i) to identify variations in temperature and precipitation in avocado-producing areas in Colombia and (ii) to evaluate the effect of calcium phosphate nanoparticles (nano CP) as an alternative to reduce stress in avocados under simulate climatic variability condition. Climatic clusters were determined based on the spatial K-means method and with the climatic temporal series data (1981–2020), a time series analysis we carried out. Later changes in each cluster were simulated in growth chambers, evaluating physiological and developmental responses in avocado seedlings subjected to nanoCaP after adjusting the application form and dose. XRD diffraction shows that the calcium phosphate phases obtained by solution combustion correspond to a mixture of hydroxyapatite and witocklite nanoparticles with irregular morphologies and particle sizes of 100 nm. Three clusters explained ∼90% of the climate variation, with increases and decreases in temperature and precipitation in the range of 1-1.4 °C and 4.1–7.3% respectively. The scleractinian corals conduct various responses upon heat stress such as bleaching and tissue loss, and colonies from the same coral species can conduct differential physiological activities with the biochemical basis unknown. In the present study, factors that influence the heat stress responses in coral Pocillopora damicornis were investigated. It was observed that P. damicornis conducted three differential physiological responses under heat treatment including tissue loss, bleaching, and polyp bailout. During heat response process, coral colonies conducting tissue loss had significantly higher total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) level, while the bleached coral colonies exhibited higher caspase-3 activation level. Moreover, the stress response varied based on the energy reserve status. Colonies with higher lipid and sugar reserves were more likely to bleach, while those with lower reserves tended to undergo polyp bailout. We demonstrate that energy reserves influence the heat response patterns of P. damicornis. Colonies with higher lipid and sugar reserves may survive longer under heat stress, suggesting that these energy reserves contribute to their heat resistance. This study evaluated the physiological responses of four marine fish species (Lateolabrax japonicus, Sebastes schlegelii, Platichthys stellatus, and Paralichthys olivaceus) to suspended sediments (SS) generated by marine sand mining. Using oxygen consumption rate (OCR), osmolality, and mortality as endpoints, the effects of SS concentrations ranging from 0 to 10,000 mg L -1 were assessed. L. japonicus exhibited the highest sensitive in OCR, with an EC50 of 15,812 mg L -1 responding more rapidly to SS exposure. In contrast, S. schlegelii demonstrated the highest mortality, with an LC50 of 340,921 mg L -1 . SS exposure caused diel variations in OCR across species, highlighting the necessity of accounting for such differences. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of audiovisuals in providing pre-treatment information to patients with cancer. Following the Six Function Model of Medical Communication, we distinguish between immediate, intermediate, and long-term outcomes., Methods: A systematic search was performed in five electronic databases for quantitative studies comparing the addition of audiovisuals with standard care or alternative interventions. Quality was assessed using Cochrane's Risk of Bias 2., Results: After abstract (n = 10,179) and full-text (n = 85) screening, 37 articles were included. Audiovisuals positively impacted patients' anxiety, knowledge, understanding, and physiological responses shortly after the consultation, particularly when video was compared with standard verbal care without audiovisual. Cadmium (Cd) pollution poses a serious challenge to the quality and safe utilization of traditional Chinese medicine plants as well as human health. In this study, seedlings of the medicinal plant species Alisma orientale were subjected to different levels of Cd stress for 7 days to investigate the effects of Cd stress on its growth, physiological response, and transcriptome profiling. The results showed that under different Cd stress levels, the growth of A. orientale displayed an inverted U-shaped dose response curve as low-dose stimulation and high-dose inhibition. Cd was mainly enriched in roots in the high concentration treatment, and Cd content reached maximum under 200-μM Cd stress. Cd stress-induced indicators including H 2 O 2 (14.1-228.8 % in leaves; 29.7-131.7 % in roots) and MDA (22.0-161.1 % in leaves; 30.0-201.1 % in roots) showed different degree of increase, except under 200-μM Cd stress, which had a slight decrease. Antioxidant enzyme system (SOD, POD and CAT) and nonenzymatic substances (SS, SP, total flavonoid and total polyphenols) played a key role to mitigate Cd toxic effects. Transcriptome analysis revealed 26,442 significantly differentially expressed genes, and plant-pathogen interactions and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis were identified as two key pathways. Through WGCNA joint analysis, the transcription factor genes R2R3-MYB (AoMYB12) and WRKY (AoWRKY5 and AoWRKY6) were identified as hub regulators of A. orientale in response to Cd stress. Previous studies have confirmed that the tire microplastic particles (TMPs) have a variety of toxic biological effects. However, the potential toxic mechanisms of TMPs remain to be elucidated, especially in the interaction between particle behavior and seawater warming. In this study, we investigated the effects of three different concentrations of TMPs suspensions (0 mg/L, 1 mg/L, and 500 mg/L) on Alexandrium pacificum in both the presence and absence of warming. Our results revealed significant differences in toxicity among different concentrations of TMPs towards A. pacificum, i.e., low concentrations promoting but high concentrations inhibiting, furthermore, warming exacerbated these toxicological responses. Specifically, under elevated temperature, high concentrations TMPs could inhibit photosynthetic pigment and chlorophyll fluorescence parameter, as well as the nutrient absorption, and induced oxidative stress. Furthermore, TMPs could adsorb onto microalgae surfaces and thus, forming heterogeneous aggregates through agglomeration with extracellular secretions. This is strongly correlated with biomarker response. Since the advent of sequencing technologies in the 1990s, researchers have focused on the association between aberrations in chromosomal DNA and disease. However, not all forms of the DNA are linear and chromosomal. Extrachromosomal circular DNAs (eccDNAs) are double-stranded, closed-circled DNA constructs free from the chromosome that reside in the nuclei. Although widely overlooked, the eccDNAs have recently gained attention for their potential roles in physiological response, intratumoral heterogeneity and cancer therapeutics. In this review, we summarize the history, classifications, biogenesis, and highlight recent progresses on the emerging topic of eccDNAs and comment on their potential application as biomarkers in clinical settings.

This paper reports an experimental study on college students in a climate chamber, analyzed the scenes of measured skin temperature, EEG activity and task performance of subjects exposed to three temperatures. The concentration performances of the subject task were evaluated by measured neurophysiological parameters. Results shown that there were gender differences in local skin temperatures and EEG-based concentration index at the indoor temperatures to which they were exposed, females’ mean skin temperature is more sensitive to temperature steps. Accuracy divided by response time was proposed as a performance index, the influence of exposed temperature on two indicators depends on the type of cognitive task. The concentration index was more affected by cold in the male subjects. Experimental results strongly confirmed that EEG-based concentration index should be affected by indoor temperatures. Furthermore, a correlational analysis identified the close relationship between concentration index and performance index.

Unveiling the mechanisms of bacterial sporulation at natural mineral interfaces is crucial to fully understand the interactions of mineral with microorganism in aquatic environment. In this study, the bacterial sporulation mechanisms of Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) at natural sphalerite (NS) interface with and without light irradiation were systematically investigated for the first time. Under dark condition, NS was found to inactivate vegetative cells of B. subtilis and promote their sporulation simultaneously. The released Zn2+ from NS was mainly responsible for the bacterial inactivation and sporulation. With light irradiation, the photocatalytic effect from NS could increase the bacterial inactivation efficiency, while the bacterial sporulation efficiency was decreased from 8.1 % to 4.5 %. The photo-generated H2O2 and ·O2– played the major roles in enhancing bacterial inactivation and suppressing bacterial sporulation process. The intracellular synthesis of dipicolinic acid (DPA) as biomarker for sporulation was promoted by NS in dark, which was suppressed by the photocatalytic effect of NS with light irradiation. The transformation process from vegetative cells to spores was monitored by both 3D-fluerecence EEM and SEM observations. Compared with the NS alone system, the NS/light combined system induced higher level of intracellular ROSs, up-regulated antioxidant enzyme activity and decreased cell metabolism activity, which eventually led to enhanced inactivation of vegetative cells and suppressed bacterial sporulation. These results not only provide in-depth understanding about bacterial sporulation as a new mode of sub-lethal stress response at NS interface, but also shed lights on putting forward suitable strategies for controlling spore-producing bacteria by suppressing their sporulation during water disinfection.

Abstract Background Elevated ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation is potentially deleterious to many organisms specifically crop plants and has become a global challenge. Rice is an exceptionally important staple food which is grown worldwide, and many efforts have been done recently to improve rice varieties against UV-B stress. This current study aims to investigate the effects of exogenous application of β-sitosterol (βSito) on growth improvement and tolerance level of rice plants against prolonged UV-B stress. The physiological and metabolic responses were evaluated in rice plants not supplemented with βSito (Nβ) and those supplemented with βSito (Sβ). Results The Nβ and Sβ plants were grown under non-stress (ns) and under prolonged UV-B stress (uvs) conditions and termed as Nβns, Sβns and Nβuvs, Sβuvs, respectively. The application of βSito contributes positively under non-stress and specifically to UV-B stress in terms of improving numerous physiological parameters associated with growth and development such as shoot and root length, RWC, whole plant biomass, chlorophyll pigments, and photosynthetic-related parameters (Pn, Gs, Tr, WUEi, Fv/Fm, and NPQ) in Sβ compared with Nβ plants. Moreover, enhanced oxidative stress tolerance of Sβuvs vs. Nβuvs plants under stress was attributed to low levels of ROS and substantial trigger in activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, CAT, and APX). Metabolic analysis was performed using GC-TOFMS, which revealed higher accumulation of several key metabolites including organic acids, sugars, amino acids, and others in Sβuvs vs. Nβuvs plants, which were mainly reduced in Nβ plants under stress vs. non-stress conditions. Conclusion These results provide useful data regarding the important role of βSito on growth maintenance and modulation of several metabolites associated with osmotic and redox adjustments during UV-B stress tolerance in rice plants. Importantly, βSito-regulated plasticity could further be explored specifically in relation to different environmental stresses in other economically useful crop plants.

Kaempferia spp. have traditionally played a role in treating various ailments and are attracting increasing economic and scientific interest. This review evaluates the traditional use, phytochemical compounds, and biological properties of Kaempferia parviflora, Kaempferia galanga, Kaempferia rotunda, Kaempferia pulchra, and Kaempferia angustifolia. The health benefits associated with consuming Kaempferia spp. and their active components, namely flavonoids and other volatile compounds, include antibacterial, anticancer, antidiabetic, cardiovascular protective, immunoregulatory, neuroprotective, and skin-whitening effects, suggesting the use of Kaempferia spp. as a potential health aid for the aging population. As agricultural production is important to ensure consistent quality of Kaempferia produce, resource management techniques related to species identification, cultivation, storage, and processing were also highlighted. It was suggested that the value-added concept in agricultural production may be limited. Investigations into plant biology and physiology are required to provide a solid theoretical basis for the sustainable production of Kaempferia.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient driving algal growth in aquatic ecosystems. Dissolved inorganic and organic P (DIP and DOP) are the main components in the marine P pools and are closely related to harmful algal blooms. The dinoflagellate Akashiwo sanguinea is a cosmopolitan species which frequently causes dense blooms in estuaries and coasts worldwide, while the availability of P to A. sanguinea still remain unclear. Herein, the physiological and transcriptomic responses of A. sanguinea grown under P-deficient, DIP-replete and DOP-replete conditions were compared. P-deficient adversely suppressed the growth and photosynthesis of A. sanguinea, while genes associated with P transport, DOP utilization, sulfolipid synthesis, and energy production, were markedly elevated. Three forms of DOP, namely, glucose-6-phosphate (G-6-P), adenosine 5-triphosphate (ATP), and β-Glycerol phosphate (SG-P), supported A. sanguinea growth as efficiently as DIP (NaH 2 PO 4 ), and no significant difference was observed in biochemical compositions and photosynthesis of A. sanguinea between the DIP and DOP treatments. While the genes related to P transporter were markedly suppressed in DOP groups compared with the DIP group. Seaweed cultivation can inhibit the occurrence of red tides. However, how seaweed aquaculture interactions with harmful algal blooms will be affected by the increasing occurrence and intensity of marine heatwaves (MHWs) is unknown. In this study, we run both monoculture and coculture systems to investigate the effects of a simulated heatwave on the competition of the economically important macroalga Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis against the harmful bloom diatom Skeletonema costatum. Coculture with G. lemaneiformis led to a growth decrease in S. costatum. Growth and photosynthetic activity (F v /F m ) of G. lemaneiformis was greatly reduced by the heatwave treatment, and did not recover even after one week. Growth and photosynthetic activity of S. costatum was also reduced by the heatwave in coculture, but returned to normal during the recovery period. S. costatum also responded to the stressful environment by forming aggregates. Metabolomic analysis suggests that the negative effects on S. costatum were related to an allelochemical release from G. lemaneiformis. This study investigated the bioindicator potential of Amaranthus retroflexus L., Plantago lanceolata L., Rumex acetosa L., and Trifolium pratense L. including the use of Lolium multiflorum L. as a reference species, for heavy metal pollution monitoring, in particular Zinc (Zn), Cadmium (Cd), Nickel (Ni), and Lead (Pb). Controlled heavy metal contamination was applied through irrigation with metal nitrate solutions two levels of contamination (low and high). The study also focused on analyzing heavy metals concentration in plant tissues and related physiological responses. Distinct physiological responses to heavy metal stress were observed among the investigated species, highlighting unique variations in their reactions. Hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde content, and enzymatic activities emerged as reliable indicators of plant stress induced by heavy metal solutions. P. lanceolata displayed elevated Zn concentrations in both roots and leaves (3271 ± 337 and 4956 ± 82 mg kg -1 ). For Pb, L. multiflorum and P. lanceolata showed highest root concentrations (2964 ± 937 and 1605 ± 289 mg kg -1 ), while R. acetosa had higher leaf concentration (1957 ± 147 mg kg -1 ). For Ni, L. multiflorum had the highest root concentration (1148 ± 93 mg kg -1 ), and P. lanceolata exhibited the highest leaf concentration (2492 ± 28 mg kg -1 ). P. lanceolata consistently demonstrated the highest Cd concentrations in both roots (126 ± 21 mg kg -1 ) and leaves (163 ± 12 mg kg -1 ). Heavy metal contamination poses a serious environmental hazard, globally necessitating intricate attention. Heavy metals can cause deleterious health hazards to humans and other living organisms even at low concentrations. Environmental biotechnologists and eco-toxicologists have rigorously assessed a plethora of bioremediation mechanisms that can hamper the toxic outcomes and the molecular basis for rejuvenating the hazardous impacts, optimistically. Environmental impact assessment and restoration of native and positive scenario has compelled biological management in ensuring safety replenishment in polluted realms often hindered by heavy metal toxicity. Copious treatment modalities have been corroborated to mitigate the detrimental effects to remove heavy metals from polluted sites. In particular, Biological-based treatment methods are of great attention in the metal removal sector due to their high efficiency at low metal concentrations, ecofriendly nature, and cost-effectiveness. Due to rapid multiplication and growth rates, bacteria having metal resistance are advocated for metal removal applications. Evolutionary implications of coping with heavy metals toxicity have redressed bacterial adaptive/resistance strategies related to physiological and cross-protective mechanisms. Ample reviews have been reported for the bacterial adaptive strategies to cope with heavy metal toxicity. Nevertheless, a holistic review summarizing the redox reactions that address the cross-reactivity mechanisms between metallothionein synthesis, extracellular polysaccharides production, siderophore production, and efflux systems of metal resistant bacteria are scarce. Molecular dissection of how bacteria adapt themselves to metal toxicity can augment novel and innovative technologies for efficient detoxification, removal, and combat the restorative difficulties for stress alleviations. The present comprehensive compilation addresses the identification of newer methodologies, summarizing the prevailing strategies of adaptive/resistance mechanisms in bacterial bioremediation. Further pitfalls and respective future directions are enumerated in invigorating effective bioremediation technologies including overexpression studies and delivery systems. The analysis will aid in abridging the gap for limitations in heavy metal removal strategies and necessary cross-talk in elucidating the complex cascade of events in better bioremediation protocols.

Salinity fluctuations significantly impact the reproduction, growth, development, as well as physiological and metabolic activities of fish. To explore the osmoregulation mechanism of aquatic organisms acclimating to salinity stress, the physiological and transcriptomic characteristics of spotted seabass (Lateolabrax maculatus) in response to varying salinity gradients were investigated. In this study, different salinity stress exerted inhibitory effects on lipase activity, while the impact on amylase activity was not statistically significant. Notably, a moderate increase in salinity (24 psu) demonstrated the potential to enhance the efficient utilization of proteins by spotted seabass. Both Na + /K + -ATPase and malondialdehyde showed a fluctuating trend of increasing and then decreasing, peaking at 72 h. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that most differentially expressed genes were involved in energy metabolism, signal transduction, the immune response, and osmoregulation. Alternative protein sources such as mopane worm (Imbrasia belina) meal (MWM) are essential for sustainable poultry production. To date, no studies have attempted to investigate the effect of replacing soybean products with MWM in Jumbo quail diets. Thus, this study was designed to investigate the optimum inclusion level of MWM in place of soybean products on feed intake, physiological and meat quality responses of Jumbo quails. A total of 384 two-week-old mixed-gender quails (71.2 ± 5.40 g live-weight) were allotted to four isoproteic and isocaloric dietary treatments formulated by replacing soybean products with MWM at 0 (MWM0), 50 (MWM5), 100 (MWM10), and 150 (MWM15) g/kg. Neither linear nor quadratic effects (P > 0.05) were observed for feed intake, physiological responses, carcass traits and internal organs except for large intestines, which linearly decreased (P < 0.05) with MWM levels. There were significant quadratic trends for meat redness (a*), yellowness (b*) and chroma values in response to MWM levels. No dietary influences (P > 0.05) were observed on feed intake, physiological responses, internal organ weights, and carcass and meat quality parameters, except on b*, chroma and shear force. Diets MWM5 and MWM10 promoted higher (P < 0.05) b* and chroma values than MWM0. Whereas diet MWM5 promoted the highest (P < 0.05) shear force (2.39 N) than diets MWM0 and MWM10. We concluded that MWM has the potential to replace soybean products in quail diets without compromising their performance, health and meat quality. An optimum MWM inclusion level could not be determined suggesting that higher levels of MWM should be further investigated.

High speed development of the mining industry has lead to serious heavy metal pollution problems around mining areas in China, such as contaminating soil, and threatening the health of ecosystems and local residents. Plants long-term grown in mining areas largely show high adaptive capacity to the environment and facilitate the reclamation of degraded lands. In this study, we tested whether and how nitrogen form affect the adaptive capacity to soil contamination between legume (Robinia pseudoacacia) and nonlegume (Rhus chinensis) plants, typical phytoremediation species for soil environments polluted by heavy metals in China. All growth parameters and leaf catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) of plant species were significantly greater in control than in contamination soil, in legume than in nonlegume, and in 50% NO3− (nitrate)+ 50% NH4+ (ammonium) and 100% NH4+ than in without and 100% NO3− treatments. The negative effect of soil contamination on all growth parameters was significantly stronger in nonlegume than in legume plant. Legume plant produced greater total mass, root mass and leaf mass in 50% NO3− + 50% NH4+ and 100% NH4+. Furthermore, the positive effect was not influenced by soil contamination. The greater physiological response to soil contamination in nonlegume plant and mixed addition of NO3− and NH4+ greatly relieved heavy metal stress on plants, especially in nonlegume plant. Mixed addition of NO3− and NH4+ greatly increased transfer factor for Pb and Zn and the positive effect significantly greater in nonlegume than in legume plant. Mixed addition of NO3− and NH4+ greatly increased the performance and adaptation of legume in contamination environment. To some extent, multiple N form addition in soil contamination environment may facilitate high plant adaption in phytoremediation, and using legume plants with mixed addition of NO3− and NH4+ is largely an important restoration mode for degraded mining areas.

Workers such as police officers are exposed to many hazardous situations while performing traffic duties, which renders them vulnerable to work accidents. Such a dangerous work context can lead to high stress levels. This is conducive to performance impairment and, consequently, to high-risk situations in which safety, for both workers and road users, may be jeopardized. It then seems important to better understand the stress experienced by traffic workers to ultimately improve road safety. Hence, the current study aims at investigating whether work context could be associated with the stress levels of police officers doing traffic duties on foot. Nineteen police officers in Quebec City and Montreal, Canada, performed traffic duties on several sites (including constructions ones) while their physiological state was measured by a wearable sensor harness. Change in subjective stress was measured every 15 min. Characteristics of the environment were also noted for every working site, which permitted to perform hierarchical cluster classifications to assess each site's complexity. Results show that stress levels were significantly lower for less complex sites. Interestingly, traffic and safety measures—identified through automated computer vision—differ depending on the site complexity and were generally associated with measures of stress. Taken together, these results suggest that the context in which pedestrian workers perform traffic duties, that is the environment and the higher-risk events to which they are exposed, can lead to higher levels of stress. Implications for road safety are discussed in light of these results.

The phosphate-mineralizing bacteria (PMBs) has shown great potential as a sustainable solution to support pollution remediation through its induced mineralization capacity. However, few studies have been conducted on the mechanism of cadmium (Cd) tolerance in PMBs. In this study, a PMB strain, Enterobacter sp. PMB-5, screened from Cd-contaminated rhizosphere soil, has high resistance to Cd (540 - 1220 mg/L) and solubilized phosphate (232.08 mg/L). The removal experiments showed that the strain PMB-5 removed 71.69-98.24% and 34.83-76.36% of Cd with and without biomineralization, respectively. The characterization result of SEM, EDS, TEM, XPS and XRD revealed that PMB-5 induced Cd to form amorphous phosphate precipitation through biomineralization and adopted different survival strategies, including biomineralization, bioaccumulation, and biosorption to resistance Cd in the microbial induced phosphate precipitation (MIPP) system and the non-MIPP system, respectively. Moreover, the results of whole genome sequencing and qRT-PCR indicated that phosphorus metabolism genes such as pst, pit, phn, ugp, ppk, etc. and heavy metal tolerance genes (including ion transport, ion efflux, redox, antioxidant stress), such as czcD, zntA, mgtA, mgtC, katE, SOD2, dsbA, cysM, etc. were molecular for the PMB-5 mineralization and Cd tolerance of PMB-5. Together, our findings suggested Enterobacter sp. Microplastics (MPs) pollution's impact on the marine ecosystem is widely recognized. This study compared the effects of polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) on two bivalve species, Ruditapes philippinarum (clam) and Chlamys farreri (scallop), at two particle concentrations (10 and 1000 μg/L). MPs were found in the digestive glands and gills of both species. Although clearance rates showed no significant changes, exposure to different MPs caused oxidative stress, energy disruption, and lipid metabolism disorders in both clam and scallop. Histopathological damage was observed in gills and digestive glands. IBR values indicated increasing toxicity with concentration, with PET being more toxic than PE. WOE model suggested increasing hazard with concentration, highlighting higher PET toxicity on clam digestive glands. In contrast, PE hazard increased in gills, showing different species responses. Among domestic ruminants, goats are renowned for their ability to tolerate water deprivation, water restriction and energy restriction. However, some basic questions regarding their ability to endure water restriction under heat stress are still open. Three levels of water restriction (56%, 73% and 87% of the ad libitum) were imposed on 20 cross-bred 3-year-old female goats (75% German Fawn and 25% Hair Goat) distributed into four groups, with five animals per treatment. The experiment was conducted from the beginning of July to the end of August in a farm located in the Eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey (40 m in altitude; 36 59' N, 35 18'E), in which subtropical weather conditions prevail. The average daily temperature during the experiment was 34.2°C, whereas the highest and lowest temperatures were 42°C and 23.1°C, respectively. The average relative humidity was 68.2% and wind speed was 1.2 km/h. Weekly average thermal heat indexes during the experiment were 78.3 (week 1), 79.1 (week 2), 80.1 (weak 3), 79.8 (weak 4), 81.3 (weak 5) and on average 79.7. Feed intake, heart rate, thermoregulatory responses (rectal temperature, respiration rate), blood plasma concentrations of ions (Na, K), antidiuretic hormone (ADH), metabolites (glucose, cholesterol, creatinine and urea) and behavioral aspects (standing, walking, lying) were studied over 30 days. The responses to water restriction were proportional to the level of restriction. The reductions in feed intake (up to 13%), BW (up to 4.6%) and the increases in rectal temperature (0.5°C) and breath rate (10 respirations/min) were moderate and also were far from responses encountered under severe heat and water stresses. The increase in plasma Na (from 119 to 140 mM) and ADH concentrations (from 12.6 to 17.4 pg/ml) indicates that the physiological response to water restriction was in response to mild dehydration, which also explains the increase in blood plasma concentrations of glucose, cholesterol, creatinine and urea. Behavioral responses (reduction in walking from 226 to 209 min/day and increase in lying from 417 to 457 min/day) were associated with conservation of energy or thermoregulation (reducing the exposure to direct radiation).

Coastal areas are confronted with compounding threats arising from both climatic and non-climatic stressors. Antibiotic pollution and ocean acidification are two prevalently concurrent environmental stressors. Yet their interactive effects on marine biota have not been investigated adequately and the compound hazard remain obscure. In this study, bay scallops Argopecten irradians irradians were exposed to multiple antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, norfloxacin, and erythromycin, each at a concentration of 1 μg/L) combined with/without acidic seawater (pH 7.6) for 35 days. The single and interactive effects of the two stressors on A. irradians irradians were determined from multidimensional bio-responses, including energetic physiological traits as well as the molecular underpinning (metabolome and expressions of key genes). Results showed that multiple antibiotics predominantly enhanced the process of DNA repair and replication via disturbing the purine metabolism pathway. This alternation is perhaps to cope with the DNA damage induced by oxidative stress. Ocean acidification mainly disrupted energy metabolism and ammonia metabolism of the scallops, as evidenced by the increased ammonia excretion rate, the decreased O:N ratio, and perturbations in amino acid metabolism pathways. Moreover, the antagonistic effects of multiple antibiotics and ocean acidification caused alternations in the relative abundance of neurotransmitter and gene expression of neurotransmitter receptors, which may lead to neurological disorders in scallops. Phosphorus (P) is an essential macronutrient impacting bloom formation of marine dinoflagellates. The dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum is a cosmopolitan species known to frequently cause dense blooms in estuarine and coastal waters worldwide, while the physiological and molecular responses of A. pacificum to P utilization are still not well understood. Herein, the growth, P utilization, toxin production and transcriptomes of A. pacificum grown under P-deficient, inorganic P-replete, and organic P-replete conditions were compared. The results indicated that P-deficient adversely affected the growth of A. pacificum and significantly down-regulated the expression of genes related to P transport and material metabolism, but enhanced the production of toxin. On the other hand, no significant differences were observed in growth and toxin production between the organic and inorganic P-replete treatments. However, genes involved in P transport, utilization and TCA cycle were significantly changed in the organic P-replete compared with the inorganic P-replete group, and the mechanisms underlying the use of various organic P compounds were different. Mercury (Hg) is an important hazardous pollutant that can cause phytotoxicity and harm human health through the food chain. Recently, rice (Oryza sativa L.) has been confirmed as a potential Hg bioaccumulator. Although the genetic and molecular mechanisms involved in heavy metal absorption and translocation in rice have been investigated for several heavy metals, Hg is largely neglected. Here, we analyzed one Hg-resistant line in rice (RHg) derived from a DNA methyltransferase-coding gene, OsMET1-2 heterozygous mutant. Compared with its isogenic wild-type (WT), RHg exhibited a significantly higher survival rate after Hg treatment, ameliorated oxidative damage, and lower Hg uptake and translocation. RNAseq-based comparative transcriptomic analysis identified 34 potential Hg resistance-related genes involved in phytohormone signaling, abiotic stress response, and zinc (Zn) transport. Importantly, the elevated expression of Hg resistance-related genes in RHg was highly correlated with DNA hypomethylation in their putative promoter regions. An ionomic analysis unraveled a negative correlation between Zn and Hg in roots. Moreover, Hg concentration was effectively decreased by exogenous application of Zn in Hg-stressed rice plants. Our findings indicate an epigenetic basis of Hg resistance and reveal an antagonistic relationship between Hg and Zn, providing new hints towards Hg detoxification in plants. A 6-week trial was designed to investigate the effects of dietary sodium chloride supplementation on physiological, metabolic, and molecular stress response parameters. The findings showed that (1) there were no significant differences between sodium chloride supplementation groups (0.05S, 0.1S, and 0.15S) and the control group (P > 0.05), except for the 0.2S diet, which showed better final body weight, weight gain rate, specific growth rate, and feed conversion ratio than the control group (P < 0.05). (2) The hypothermic stress experiment results showed that the survival rates in the 0.1S and 0.15S diets were significantly higher than the control group (P < 0.05). (3) Transcription results showed that these enriched pathways in the gill were mainly energy metabolism and apoptosis pathways, while the major enrichment pathways in the liver were mainly amino acid metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism. (4) The plasma parameter results showed, compared to the control group, the 0.15S diet significantly increased the plasma GLU, TG contents, and Na + and K + concentrations and decreased the plasma ALT activity (P < 0.05). In addition, the 0.1S diet increased the plasma ALB content and Cl - concentration (P < 0.05). The gill Na + /K + -ATPase activity decreased markedly when the fish were fed the 0.1S and 0.15S diets (P < 0.05). The antioxidant enzyme activity results showed that the 0.1S and 0.15S diets significantly increased the T-SOD activities (P < 0.05). Gene expression results showed that compared to the control group, the 0.1S and 0.15S diets up-regulated the expression of gys, hsp70, mlcp, mlc, myosin, tnt mRNA, and down-regulated the akt, gk, and erk mRNA expression. Triclocarban (TCC) is a widely used broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that has become a pollutant threatening the health of aquatic animals. However, the toxic effects of TCC on Penaeus monodon are still lacking. In this study, we exposed P. monodon to 1 μg/L (TCC-1) and 10 μg/L TCC (TCC-10) for 14 days, and the changes of histological morphology, physiological and immune responses in the gills were investigated. The results showed that TCC exposure caused the deformation of the gill vessels and the disordered arrangement of the gill filaments. Oxidative stress biochemical indexes such as H 2 O 2 content, CAT and GPx activity and the relative expression levels of antioxidant-related genes (SOD, GPx and Nrf2) were increased in the TCC-1 and TCC-10 groups; the levels of CAT and HSP70 genes were increased but POD activity was decreased in the TCC-10 group. The relative expression levels of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress indexes such as ERP15 and ATF-6 genes were increased in the TCC-10 group, while the level of GRP78 gene was decreased in the TCC-1 and TCC-10 groups. The relative expression levels of apoptosis indexes such as p53 and JNK genes were increased, but CytC and Casp-3 genes were decreased in the TCC-1 and TCC-10 groups. Furthermore, the relative expression levels of detoxification metabolism-related genes (cytP450 and GST) and osmotic regulation-related genes (NKA-α, NKA-β, CA, AQP, CLC and CCP) were increased in the TCC-10 group. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by Karenia mikimotoi have posed great threats to marine ecosystems, and algal inactivation by symbiotic bacteria has been recognized as environmental benign methods for controlling HABs. However, the identified algicidal bacteria for K. mikimotoi is limited and exclusively based on indirect algicidal pathways, which may cause secondary pollution due to releasing toxic algicidal agents. In this study, a novel strain of algicidal bacteria Tenacibaculum sp. GD3 was isolated from the phycosphere of K. mikimotoi. The bacterial strain GD3 could achieve 92.6 % of inactivation efficiency against K. mikimotoi within 8 h of co-culturing period, which outperformed those in existing literatures reported so far. The algicidal mechanisms were revealed to be a rare direct cell-to-cell contact pathway, and the GD3 could grow by utilizing metabolites from K. mikimotoi, exhibiting excellent bacterial adaptability in the phycosphere. Cell morphology changes were monitored by live cell imaging system combined with SEM and TEM observations, which showed that the GD3 was first attached to the algal cell membrane, followed by lipid peroxidation and lysis of membrane protein. Oxidative stress responses were induced as reveled by up-regulation of intracellular ROSs and antioxidant enzyme activity. Photosynthetic parameters including rETR max , F v /F m , YII and NPQ were reduced, and expression of functional genes involved in decomposition of chlorophyll and cell wall was significantly suppressed. Moreover, the intracellular release profile and acute toxicity assessment indicated that the GD3 could also detoxify the K. mikimotoi cultures and the released biomolecules would not cause adverse effect to marine environment. Ocean acidification (OA) and trace metal pollutants coexist to exert combined effects on the functions and services of marine ecosystems. Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide has caused a decrease in the pH of the ocean, affecting the bioavailability and speciation of trace metals and consequently altering metal toxicity in marine organisms. As an important trace metal functioned in hemocyanin, the richness of Copper (Cu) in octopuses is remarkable. Therefore, the biomagnification and bioaccumulation capacities of Cu in octopuses may be a non-negligible risk of contamination. Here, Amphioctopus fangsiao was continuously exposed to acidified seawater (pH 7.8) and copper (50 μg/L) to investigate the combined effect of ocean acidification and Cu exposure on marine mollusks. Our results showed that A. fangsiao could adapt well to ocean acidification after 21 days of the rearing experiment. However, the accumulation of Cu in A. fangsiao intestine increased significantly in acidified seawater under high levels of Cu stress. In addition, Cu exposure can influence the physiological function of A. fangsiao, including growth and feeding. This study also demonstrated that Cu exposure disturbed glucolipid metabolism and induced oxidative damage to intestine tissue, and ocean acidification further exacerbated these toxic effects. The obvious histological damage and microbiota alterations were also caused by Cu stress and its combined effect with ocean acidification. At the transcription level, we found numerous differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and significantly enriched KEGG pathways, involving glycolipid metabolism, transmembrane transport, glucolipid metabolism, oxidative stress, mitochondrial, protein and DNA damage, all revealing the strong toxicological synergetic effect of Cu and OA exposure and the molecular adaptation mechanism of A. fangsiao. Collectively, this study demonstrated that octopuses may withstand future ocean acidification conditions, however, the complex interactions of future OA and trace metal pollution need to be emphasized. Heating rate has gained extensive attention in mechanistic understanding of physiological responses to changing thermal conditions in the context of climate change. In polymorphic gastropods, differences in the absorption of solar energy between dark- and light-coloured individuals lead to supposable differences in their heating rates and body temperatures in sunshine. In the present study, we examined the effect of heating rate on heart rate (HR) in a polymorphic gastropod Batillaria attramentaria. By using biomimetic models, we found that daily maximum temperature of snails with a dark unbanded shell (D-type morph) was higher than snails with a white line on the upper side of each whorl (UL-type morph) by 0.6 °C when exposed to sunlight, but there was no apparent difference in heating rates between D- and UL-type models. We measured HR of snails at various heating rates from 3.0 to 9.0 °C h -1 . Faster heating rates significantly increased maximum thermal tolerance in both D- and UL-type snails, highlighting the importance to have thorough knowledge on the heating rate in the field to obtain accurate maximum thermal limit of gastropods. Critical temperature at which HR precipitously declines was higher in D-type snails than UL-type snails. The frequency of extreme drought events has been rising worldwide, but due to its unpredictability, how plants will respond remains poorly understood. Here, we aimed to characterize how the hydraulics and photosynthesis of savanna plants respond to extreme drought, and tested whether they can subsequently recover photosynthesis after drought. There was an extreme drought in 2019 in Southwest (SW) China. We investigated photosynthetic gas exchange, leaf-, stem-, and whole-shoot hydraulic conductance of 18 plant species with diverse leaf habits (deciduous, semi-deciduous and evergreen) and growth forms (tree and shrub) from a dry-hot valley savanna in SW China for three rainy seasons from 2019 to 2021. We also compared photosynthetic gas exchange to those of a regular year (2014). We found that leaf stomatal and hydraulic conductance and maximum photosynthetic rate were significantly lower during the drought in 2019 than in the wetter years. In 2019, all studied plants maintained stomatal conductance at their minimum level observed, which could be related to high vapor pressure deficits (VPD, >2 kPa). However, no significant difference in stem and shoot hydraulic conductance was detected across years. The reductions in leaf hydraulic conductance and stomatal regulation under extreme drought might help keep the stem hydraulic function. Stomatal conductance and photosynthesis after drought (2020 and 2021) showed comparable or even higher values compared to that of 2014, suggesting high recovery of photosynthetic gas exchange. In addition, the response of hydraulic and photosynthetic traits to extreme drought was convergent across leaf habits and growth forms. The toxicity of metals to microorganisms is highly correlated with the type of metal used. However, the differences in the resistance mechanisms of filamentous fungi to multiple metals remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the responses of Aspergillus niger to three toxic metals, i.e., Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Cu 2+ . Fungal growth and metabolism indices showed that A. niger had a higher tolerance to Pb 2+ (>1000 mg L -1 ) than to Cu 2+ (300 mg L -1 ) and Cd 2+ (50 mg L -1 ). An appropriate Pb 2+ concentration (<500 mg L -1 ) stimulated fungal growth and metabolic activity, whereas Cd 2+ and Cu 2+ stress showed continuously negative influences on fungal physiological parameters, such as biomass and secretion of oxalic acid. A. niger responded to Pb stress by constructing a new border layer around its cell wall. This pathway was also confirmed using RNA-seq analysis, i.e., the gene encoding cell wall α-1,3-glucan synthase was upregulated. This upregulation subsequently promoted the production of polysaccharides, which are the main components that support fungal cell walls. In contrast, the expression of genes encoding both AAA family ATPase and efflux pump antibiotic resistance proteins for Cd 2+ and Cu 2+ was significantly downregulated. Ammonia is a common pollutant in aquaculture system, and toxic to all aquatic animals. However, different aquatic animals exhibit diverse physiological responses to high-level ammonia exposure, potentially indicating their divergent resistance to ammonia stress. In this study, juveniles of three freshwater turtles (Mauremys reevesii, Pseudemys nelsoni and Trachemys scripta elegans) were exposed to different concentrations of ammonia (0, 0.3 and 3.0 mg/L) for 30 days, and their swimming, growth performance, gut microbiota, and hepatic metabolites were measured to evaluate the interspecific difference in physiological responses to ammonia stress. Despite no differences in swimming ability, growth rate, and gut microbial diversity, observable changes in microbial community composition and hepatic metabolite profiles were shown in ammonia-exposed turtles. A relatively higher abundance of potentially pathogenic bacteria was found in M. reevesii than in the other two species. Moreover, microbial compositions and metabolic responses differed significantly among the three species. M. reevesii was, out of the three tested species, the one in which exposure to ammonia had the greatest effect on changes in bacterial genera and hepatic metabolites. Conversely, only a few metabolites were significantly changed in T. scripta elegans. Integrating these findings, we speculated that native M. reevesii should be more vulnerable to ammonia stress compared to the invasive turtle species. Ocean acidification (OA) resulting from the absorption of excess atmospheric CO 2 by the ocean threatens the survival of marine calcareous organisms, including mollusks. This study investigated the effects of OA on adults of two abalone species (Haliotis diversicolor, a subtropical species, and Haliotis discus hannai, a temperate species). Abalone were exposed to three pCO 2 conditions for 1 year (ambient, ~ 880, and ~ 1600 μatm), and parameters, including mortality, physiology, immune system, biochemistry, and carry-over effects, were measured. Survival decreased significantly at ~ 800 μatm pCO 2 for H. diversicolor, while H. discus hannai survival was negatively affected only at a higher OA level (~ 1600 μatm pCO 2 ). H. diversicolor exhibited depressed metabolic and excretion rates and a higher O:N ratio under OA, indicating a shift to lipids as a metabolism substrate, while these physiological parameters in H. discus hannai were robust to OA. Both abalone failed to compensate for the pH decrease of their internal fluids because of the lowered hemolymph pH under OA. However, the reduced hemolymph pH did not affect total hemocyte counts or tested biomarkers. Additionally, H. discus hannai increased its hemolymph protein content under OA, which could indicate enhanced immunity. Larvae produced by adults exposed to the three pCO 2 levels were cultured in the same pCO 2 conditions and larval deformation and shell length were measured to observe carry-over effects. Enhanced OA tolerance was observed for H. discus hannai exposed under both of the OA treatments, while that was only observed following parental pCO 2 ~ 880 μatm exposure for H. diversicolor. Following pCO 2 ~ 1600 μatm parental exposure, H. diversicolor offspring exhibited higher deformation and lower shell growth in all pCO 2 treatments.
