Background: Valvular heart disease (VHD) represents a spectrum of cardiac conditions, including valvular stenosis, valvular regurgitation, or mixed lesions affecting single or multiple valves. The severity of VHD has emerged as a major cause of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality among the older population in the United States (U.S). Objective: To evaluate temporal trends in mortality associated with VHD in the elderly U.S population between 1999 and 2019. Methods: We utilized the CDC WONDER database for VHD mortality in adults ≥75 from 1999 to 2019, using ICD-10 codes. Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMR) per 100,000 people with associated annual percentage change (APC) were calculated. Joinpoint regression was used to assess the overall trends and trends for demographic, geographic, and type of valvular disease subgroups. Background: Multimorbidity, individuals suffering from two or more chronic diseases, has become a major health challenge worldwide, especially in populous and prosperous cities, where studies of this phenomenon in China are limited. We examined the prevalence, trends, patterns, and associated factors of multimorbidity from 2009 to 2018 among community-dwelling adults in Guangzhou, China. Methods: We conducted serial cross-sectional surveys for chronic diseases in Guangzhou, China, in 2009, 2013, and 2018. General and stratified prevalence were standardized using demographic data. Multivariable logistic regression and hierarchical cluster analysis were applied to identify associated factors and to assess the correlations and patterns of multimorbidity, respectively. Results: This study included 23,284 adults aged 18 and over in 2009, 18,551 in 2013, and 15,727 in 2018. Study region: The Huai River Basin, China. Study focus: This study chooses the daily flow data of Huai River and its tributaries, Shi River and Hong River during 1959–2016. The co-occurrence of floods in different tributaries of the catchment is assessed by analyzing the flood peak and flood timing at three different gauging stations located in the river network. What’s more, the parameters(estimated from the 30-year scale time windows) of the marginal and joint distributions are assumed stationary and nonstationary respectively to explore how the trend of coincidence probability(CP) is effected by them. New hydrological insights for the region: The results show that, over the period analyzed, the most probable time of flood co-occurrence over the gauge stations in the study area tends to move backwards from 10 July to about 20 July. The probability of flood co-occurrence at the Bantai and Jiangjiaji gauging stations, which singularly experience an increase in flood peak, increases from 9.25×10−9(the 1st window) to 1.17×10−5(the 25th window) when the return period of flood is 20 year, while in the same condition, the CP of Bantai and Wangjiaba decreased from 6.16×10−6 to 2.48×10−7.

Background: Research on intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) has recently gained attention. However, no bibliometric analysis was performed in the ICP research field. Therefore, the present study aimed to use bibliometric analysis to analyze the current research hotspots and identify global research status in ICP to reference for future research directions. Methods: We comprehensively searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database from its inception to December 31, 2023. Articles and reviews related to ICP were downloaded as plain text file records. We used the VOSviewer and Citespace to perform the bibliometric analysis and visualization. The main bibliometric features were tabulated and calculated. Results: A total of 1092 documents, including 921 original articles and 171 reviews, were identified in WoSCC. These publications were published in 395 journals by 4751 authors from 1250 institutions and 61 countries/regions. The global publication numbers exhibited a gradual upward trend. China, the United States, and the United Kingdom were top contributors to scientific research on ICP. King's College London, London Imperial Coll Sci Technol & Med, and Sichuan University were the most productive institutions. Catherine Williamson had published the most papers and received the most total citations. The most productive journal was Journal of Maternal-Fetal & Neonatal Medicine. The most cited paper was Beuers et al. in the Journal of Hepatology (2009). Citation burst terms showed that “risk factors” and “perinatal outcomes” were hotspots. “Inflammation”, “risk factors”, “perinatal outcomes”, and “bile acid” have gained attention in more recent research. Conclusion: The present study comprehensively summarizes the global research status and research trends in ICP. Our study identifies hotspots, collaborative networks, and trends that will provide new insights and guidance for further research in the field.

The monthly and annual trends and variance of rainfall have been studied for five stations in an economically important Bangladeshi district named Sirajganj since 1965 to 2021. Natural disasters have prevalent in Sirajganj which is indispensable to assess. But, several researchers have been normally focused on river bank management and flood risk assessment. However, no extensive research has been conducted on Sirajganj based on non-normally distributed time series meteorological data such as rainfall time series so the current study is very important. In this study, the non-parametric Mann-Kendall and Sen's methods have been used to determine the statistical significance of a positive or negative trend in rainfall data. Also, cumulative sum charts and bootstrapping, one-way ANOVA, Tukey's range tests, and linear regression have been used to discover the incidence of abrupt changes, compare the significant difference in monthly and annual rainfall data, multiple comparisons amidst mentioned stations to find changes, and to investigate the changeover on dry and rainy days, respectively. The analysis showed a statistically significant decreasing trends in monthly and annual rainfall series. As well, changes from positive to negative direction have been recognized in the February, May, July, September, and annual rainfall time sequence. Besides, ANOVA and Tukey's range tests revealed a statistically substantial difference in all monthly and annual rainfall volume excluding January, March, and June. Additionally, these two tests demonstrated momentous differences in all monthly and annual frequency of rainfall categories excepting January and April. However, Linear regression analysis revealed that the number of dry days gradually reduced at the end of the dry winter, though the number of rainy days decreased during the rainy season. As in, the number of rainy days replaces the number of dry days during the dry season and vice versa during the rainy season. Even though, with very few exceptions, the volume of rainfall decreases throughout the year. The outcomes of this research might helpful for implementing the planning and evaluating hydrological projects on Sirajganj district.

Background: Acute meningitis is a disease with case fatality and disability rate that is dependent on the causative agent. Objective: Determine the meningitis trend in Iraq from 2007 to 2023 using a joinpoint regression at national and sub-national levels and describe the epidemiology. Methods: Joinpoint regression model was used on surveillance data from Jan 2007 until May 2023, to calculate annual and average annual percent changes to determine the trend. Meningitis total count was modelled by year of reporting and province using the log transformation and Poisson variance. Best-fit model was chosen based on the weighted BIC criteria as the final point. Results: Bacterial meningitis was higher than viral meningitis from 2007 to 2018, then viral meningitis started to exceed till 2023. Meningococcal meningitis was lower than other bacterial and viral meningitis from 2007 to 2023. Most meningitis cases across the years were lower than 15 years, at almost 80 %, while 20 %–40 % were lower than one year. Across all years, 55 % of the cases were males; apart from 2019, 70 % were females. Conclusion: In Iraq, viral meningitis has been the predominant type since 2018. Most meningitis patients were lower than 15-year-old males. The meningitis trend in Iraq was stable from 2007 till 2023.

Purpose: Kawasaki disease(KD) is a vascular inflammatory disease that was first identified in 1967. Numerous studies have been conducted on KD and have yielded valuable recent insights. This current bibliometric analysis aimed to determine the intellectual landscape of research interest in KD. Methods: Publications were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection. Bibliometric tools such as CiteSpace and VOSviewer were utilized to analyze the research focus, emerging trends, frontiers, and hot topics in this specific field. Results: A total of 6122 articles on KD were retrieved. Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatrics International, and Pediatric Infections Disease Journal were the three most productive journals reporting KD development. The University of California San Diego was the most productive institution, with 230 publications. The USA was the most productive country, with 1661 articles in KD. SARS-CoV-2, diagnostic serum biomarkers, and risk factor prediction models for coronary arterial lesions and subtypes of KD are popular topics in KD research. Factors that induce smooth muscle cell transition to myofibroblastic cell, potentially halting the subacute/chronic vasculitis process and endothelial dysfunction in macrophage activation syndrome associated with KD were the frontiers in the study of KD. Conclusion: KD has attracted widespread attention worldwide that has continued to increase since 1974. The most productive institution and country are the University of California San Diego and the USA, respectively. SARS-CoV-2, serum biomarkers, and prediction models are hot topics in this field.

The Sudd Wetland, which supports millions of pastoralists and farmers, as well as the internationally renowned Ramsar Wetland, are under pressure from population growth and climate change extremes such as flooding and drought. Using the Climate Hazards Group Infrareds Precipitation with Station (CHIRPS) and Climate Research Unit (CRU-TS4.06) datasets, this study investigates the spatiotemporal trend and variability of precipitation and temperature. As a result, descriptive statistics were used to describe the spatiotemporal behavior of precipitation and temperature. The Rotated Empirical Orthogonal Function (REOF) was used to detect the spatiotemporal variability of precipitation. The Pearson correlation method was used to investigate the relationship between Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and precipitation. The results revealed that Sudd-wetland receives 910 mm mean spatial annual precipitation and experienced 36 °C mean annual temperature with high spatio-temporal variations. It receives the highest precipitation in summer season followed by autumn and spring. The precipitation amount decreases towards the north in all seasons. In both the summer and winter seasons, observed rainfall variability corresponds substantially to ENSO variability, whereas the spring and autumn seasons are more connected with Atlantic and Indian Ocean Sea surface temperature gradients. The Sudd wetland has been affected by prolonged drought and frequent flood events alternatively. The prolonged drought linking with the shrinking of the wetland are potential threats to the farmers and pastoralists to adapt the changing climate. Hence, it is imperative to systematically analyze the wetland ecosystem from different dimensions and adjust the livelihood settings of the people in to less climate sensitive activities. Therefore, we suggest in depth drought and flood risk evaluation and implementation of realistic adaptation strategy to sustain the ecological and economic benefit of the wetland.

Study region: Different climates in Iran, including the northwestern regions (cold), southern coasts (hot and humid) and central regions (hot and dry). Study focus: TerraClimate network data (5 km resolution) from the 40 years (1981–2020) was used to investigate changes in the trend and breaking point of the reference crop evapotranspiration (ETo) time series for different climates in Iran. Statistical assessment indices (RMSE, R2, and BIAS) were initially employed to assess network data accuracy with ground stations. The temporal-spatial alterations of the trend, the breaking point in ETo, and its extreme values were then investigated using Mann-Kendall, Sen's Slope, Pettitt, and Bayesian quantile regression tests. New hydrological insights for the region: The correlation coefficient between monthly gridded ETo data and ground data was calculated to be more than 0.95, with an average value of BIAS of –1.1. The average ETo in the studied climates had increased. The increasing tendency for high ETo values had the highest slopes in cold climates in winter (slope >70 %), hot/dry in spring and summer (slope 40 %), and hot/humid climates in summer and winter (slope 50 %). Additionally, the findings of Pettitt's test suggest that the three climates of Iran had a rising break point in the autumn and winter (cold), autumn and spring (hot/dry), and autumn (hot/humid) seasons, respectively. This indicates that rapid changes have been more common from 1996 to 2000.

Bangladesh is susceptible to climate change, thus a detailed study, including the analyses of trends, sub-trends, extreme events and indices was conducted to obtain a complete picture of the climate change pattern in Bangladesh utilizing daily rainfall, maximum, minimum and average temperature data of 26 stations from 1975 to 2019 using R 4.0.2 software. For the trend analysis Mann Kendal (MK), modified Mann Kendall (mMK), Innovative Trend Analysis (ITA) and Sen’s slope methods were used. Sub-trend analysis was conducted using ITA. Standard Anomaly Index (SAI) has been used to identify the frequency and severity of extreme events. ClimPACT2 software was used to check the homogeneity and calculate the extremes of temperature and rainfall data. Our analysis showed that during the last four decades, climate variables changed their patterns and trend heterogeneously over Bangladesh. Most stations showed decremental rainfall trend when central part of the country showed a substantial decrease. The northern and central parts of the country showed significant growth of trend for annual average temperature. The temperature in the monsoon season increased, whereas those in dry season decreased. The rainfall and maximum temperature were inversely related during monsoon whereas during dry season both of them decrease. The pre-monsoon and post-monsoonal rainfall also showed decreasing trends, indicating prevailing drought conditions especially in northern and central parts of the country. The SAI analysis showed alternating drought and wet years in almost all the stations. In the past 20 years, the country’s western region experienced more drought years than before whereas the coastal region experienced more wet years. The analysis of climate extreme indices suggests that, Consecutive Dry Days (CDD), Hot Days (TX90P) and Hot Nights (TN90P) show significant increasing trend throughout the country. The agricultural productivity, water resource management and food security are anticipated to benefit from this study.

Objective: The high prevalence of obesity among young adults in the civilian population pose challenges in recruiting physically fit soldiers. We assessed the trend of physical fitness related to weight status among Swiss male conscripts. Methods: Cross-sectional data of medical examination data during mandatory conscription for the Swiss Armed Forces, 2007–2022 (N = 412,186). The conscription physical test (CPT) assessed five aspects of physical fitness, each aspect scoring 0–25, one component being an endurance test (ET). This study examined the spatiotemporal variations in extreme values of relative humidity (RH), temperature, temperature-humidity index (THI) and the effect of climatic variables on THI in the northern parts of Iran from 1986 to 2016. The THI was generated for each of the 30 meteorological stations. Previously, trend analysis was calculated in different seasons using quantile regression. For the most part, the results indicate a declining and rising trend in RH and temperature, respectively. The highest percentage of decreasing trend slopes was for maximum RH (≤-50 %), but for maximum temperature, the highest percentage of increasing slopes in summer and winter (≥30 %) was identified on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. However, a decreasing trend (%≤-15) was detected for the maximum temperature in autumn. The highest increasing (decreasing) trend slope of THI (30 % and −30 %) was for low values of THI in spring and winter (autumn and winter). The minimum and maximum temperatures positively affected THI in all seasons, and the value of the effect coefficient was higher in the coastal areas. Also, high values of minimum RH in the spring, summer, autumn, and winter seasons had a positive (negative) effect in 73, 100, 33, and 0 % (26, 0, 66, and 100 %) of the stations, respectively. But the maximum RH had a positive (negative) effect on 80, 100, 33, and 6 % (20, 0, 66, and 93 %) of stations, respectively. The findings of this study are generally helpful in identifying changes in weather extremes and their effects on human health.

Research on groundwater and water resources is essential for preserving viable environments. Although the arid area has been identified as a significant hotspot for groundwater depletion, the Indian desert region was not included in the initial analysis. This study intends to evaluate Rajasthan's groundwater level (GWL) and rainfall trends from 2000 to 2021 and how variations in GWLs are related to long-term rainfall. Annual GWL and rainfall data time series were collected from 921 monitoring stations for 33 districts of Rajasthan. The GWL trends and rainfall were identified using non-parametric modified Mann-Kendall test and Spearman rho techniques. Pearson's, Kendall's (tau b), and Spearman's analyses were used to determine the correlation between GWL and rainfall. The results from the modified Mann-Kendall and Spearman rho methods reveal that GWL has a significant declining trend in 38 % of districts, where 13 % have no trend, and the rest of 49 % have a rising trend. The yearly rainfall trend at 70 % and 30 % of the districts are rising and stable, respectively. A negative correlation between GWL depth and rainfall was discovered in each district, where 15 % are firm, 58 % are moderate, and 27 % are weak negative correlations. Also, the regression analysis estimates the effect of rainfall on GWL, which was observed: rainfall negatively influenced the depth of GWL at 58 % of the districts, had a positive impact at 33 %, and others had no effect. GRACE TWS anomaly shows a decreasing trend of −1.22 cm/yr, and GRACE and GWL anomalies have a positive relationship (r = 0.471). Results conclude that rainfall is the primary influencer on GWL in this semi-arid region vulnerable to drought.

This study aims to characterize the burden of osteoarthritis in China and globally from 1990 to 2019 and predict the burden for the next decade. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database is designed to assess the burden of various diseases and injuries on a global scale. Age-standardized rate data for the incidence, prevalence, and Years Lived with Disability (YLDs) of osteoarthritis in both China and the global context were extracted. Furthermore, the Estimated Annual Percentage Change (EAPC) to illustrate the long-term trends in the burden of osteoarthritis disease was calculated. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models were applied to forecast the trends in age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), and age-standardized YLDs rate (ASYR) for osteoarthritis in China and globally for the next 11 years. Knee osteoarthritis showed a changing trend of ASIR, ASPR, and ASYR from 1990 to 2019 in China, initially decreasing and then increasing. In contrast, global osteoarthritis exhibited a relatively stable overall trend over three decades. Knee osteoarthritis exhibited the highest incidence, prevalence, and YLDs across various age groups and genders. The ARIMA forecast indicated a slight upward trend in osteoarthritis burden in China and globally over the next 11 years. Osteoarthritis poses a significant health issue, emphasizing the need to enhance awareness and management of osteoarthritis among the population and policymakers, particularly focusing on the elderly and female populations.

Background: Vitamin D deficiency is a major public health problem worldwide, even in countries with abundant sunshine. Understanding the risk factors for vitamin D deficiency is important to inform public health recommendations. We conducted a longitudinal analysis of vitamin D status in Thai individuals to assess changes in vitamin D status over time and identify potential determinants. Study design: This study is a long term prospective cohort study. Tree plantations are expanding globally to satisfy demands for wood, food, energy, oil and other ecosystem services, often replacing primary vegetation. Plantations are generally less biodiverse than primary vegetation, yet the effects of plantation age on biodiversity are not well understood. More accurate estimations of biodiversity within plantations over time could improve predictions of the ecological effects of tree planting, guiding more sustainable land use and management decisions. Here, we assess the effects of plantation age on the abundance and number of species of invertebrates, birds, plants, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and lichens, and on compositional similarity to minimally-used primary vegetation. We find that plantations usually support fewer species than both minimally-used primary vegetation and mature secondary vegetation, fewer individuals, and some novel species (i.e. species not also found in primary vegetation). We also find that, on a global scale, plantation age has positive effects on species richness, the abundance of individuals, and compositional similarity to primary vegetation. However, geographic realm, biome, management intensity and plantation type influence the biodiversity trends. We also include a case study for oil palm, showing that species richness increases with oil palm plantation age. Nevertheless, plantations typically remain less biodiverse than natural vegetation even thirty years after planting, especially in the tropics, where compositional similarity between plantations and minimally-used primary vegetation remains approximately 20% lower than the non-tropics. Our results highlight the negative ecological consequences of establishing new plantations in place of primary vegetation or restoration, yet we also reveal spatio-temporal differences in plantation biodiversity.

Overall, China has made substantial progress in improving child survival over the past few decades, but a detailed understanding of child mortality trend at local level is limited. This study aimed to present a comprehensive analysis of under-5, infant, and neonatal mortality rates and its trend in Xicheng district of Beijing, China. We used the surveillance data of under-5 children reported by Preventive Health Department of Xicheng District Community Health Service Center from 1991 to 2022. The data was collected based on the Child Death Reporting Card of the Beijing Under-5 Mortality Rate Surveillance Network. Data check was performed by each community health service center and related medical institutions. We extracted data included maternal age, date of death, date of birth, gender, census register, classification of any causes of death, and utilization of healthcare services before death and doubly input it in the Excel 2016 program. Categorization of the causes of death was adapted by the International Categorization of Diseases (ICD-10). Mortality rates and distribution of the leading causes of death were analyzed with descriptive statistics and the Pearson’s Chi-square test using SAS 14.0 software. The Chi-square trend test was used to explore the trends in mortality. Interrupted time series analysis (ITSA) was conducted to assess the impact of the two-child policy on mortality using STATA statistical packages. From 1991 to 2022, totally, there were 166,061 live births and 793 (4.78 ‰) under-5 deaths. The mortality rates of under-5 children, infants and neonates in Xicheng district decreased from 14.75 ‰, 11.25 ‰ and 8.00 ‰ to 1.03 ‰, 0.83 ‰ and 0.41 ‰ respectively. Adenoma detection rate (ADR) is an imperative quality measure for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. This retrospective observational study aimed to determine the trend of polyp detection rate (PDR) and ADR in asymptomatic average- and high-risk participants in different age groups who underwent screening colonoscopy over the seven years from April 2012 to March 2019 in a tertiary gastroenterology referral center of Iran. This study presents the effective utilization of data analysis in efficiently managing medical resources — a crucial factor in ensuring high-quality healthcare delivery and positive patient outcomes. We employ a multiplicative Holt-Winters model and a linear model with an autoregressive moving-average time series error term and analyze time series mortality rates associated with hyponatremia, a condition that leads to a systemic electrolyte imbalance. The time series data consistently reveals noticeable trends and recurring seasonal patterns. To address these intricate patterns, the proposed data analysis approaches adeptly incorporate these features, thereby yielding relatively accurate point forecasts and reliable forecast intervals. Beyond mere forecasting, the autoregressive moving-average model approach offers insights into the overarching trend and facilitates the comparison of seasonal components. One of the approaches is well-suited for the specific time series related to hyponatremia and holds the potential for extension to incorporate more complex trends beyond linearity. The research demonstrates the synergistic relationship between data analysis and medical expertise, working in tandem to achieve the optimal allocation of medical resources. We strongly advocate for the routine integration of statistical analyses as an essential practice to foster this harmonious synergy.

Summary: Background: Despite Hong Kong's world leading longevity, little is known about its associated disability burden and social patterning. Hence, this study assessed the gender-specific secular trends and area-level inequalities in life expectancy (LE) and disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) at age 65 in Hong Kong. Methods: Population structure, death records, and disability data in 2007, 2013, and 2020 were retrieved from the Census and Statistics Department to estimate LE and DFLE using the Sullivan Method. District-based sociodemographic indicators were used to compare LE and DFLE across 18 districts of Hong Kong in 2013. Findings: Between 2007 and 2020, LE at age 65 increased by 3.7 years (from 18.3 to 22.0) in men and by 2.1 years (from 22.7 to 24.8) in women. By contrast, DFLE increased more slowly, by 1.8 years (from 14.6 to 16.3) in men and by only 0.1 year (from 16.4 to 16.5) in women, leading to a substantial increase in proportion of life spent with disability. Results from multiple linear regression using district-based data in 2013 showed a similar extent of associations of education with LE and DFLE (mean year difference: 0.81 [95% CI: 0.14, 1.48] and 0.68 [0.10, 1.27], respectively, per 10% increase in average education level), while female gender was more strongly associated with LE (4.44 [3.56, 5.31]) than with DFLE (2.00 [1.18, 2.82]). Interpretation: Expansion of disability burden and male-female health-survival paradox hold true in Hong Kong. Unlike Western countries with a stronger socioeconomic patterning of DFLE, the extent of area-level socioeconomic inequalities in LE and DFLE appears to be more comparable in Hong Kong. Objectives: Identifying the trend of diseases and its changes over time can be highly important in evaluating the extent and method of achieving strategies for controlling them, developing health indicators, and health planning. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of tuberculosis. Methods: As a repeated cross-sectional study in which the population under study was a census, this study involved all tuberculosis cases registered in 21 cities of Southwest of Iran, from 2010 to 2019. Data were obtained from the National System of Notification of Tuberculosis and included variables related to age, sex and Disease consequence. Segmented regression models were used to analyze the trend of tuberculosis changes. Also, data analysis software- Join Point Regression version 5.0.2 was used for data analysis. Results: The results of evaluating the trend of tuberculosis from 2010 to 2019 showed no change in the general trend of tuberculosis and an annual 0.84% (95% CI: ‐5.17 to 6.82) increase in incidence rate is observed in the trend. Also, the findings of join point regression analysis show that between 2010 and 2013, an annual 18.10% (95% CI: 8.78 to 34.89) increase in the incidence of tuberculosis, and between 2013 and 2019, annual −5.42% (95% CI: −10.04 to −2.22) decrease in the incidence of tuberculosis was observed. From 2010 to 2012, a 33.10% (95% CI: 15.77 to 48.06) annual increase in the incidence of tuberculosis in males and − 9.47% (95%CI: −14.02 to −6.33) annual decrease in the incidence of tuberculosis in females was observed. Conclusions: The results of this study showed that the incidence of tuberculosis had an upward trend from 2010 to 2013 and a downward trend from 2013 onwards.

There is insufficient paucity of information on trends in long-term monthly and decadal rainfall in Zambia. This study assessed the monthly and decadal trends in rainfall over the agro-ecological regions (AERs) and Zambia from 1981 to 2022. The Mann-Kendall test statistic was used at 5 % significant level to compute trends in rainfall at monthly and decadal time step on CHIRPS v2 at 0.05° resolution. R/RStudio Sen's slope estimator was used to give the magnitude of the observed trends. The monthly rainfall time series trend over Zambia ranges from −0.04 to 0.03. The decadal trend analysis of rainfall at annual and monthly time step exhibits a decreasing/increasing trend with Sen's slope between −49.27 and 71.26 mm. Decadal trend at annual time step in AERIII, AERIIa, AERIIa and AERI exhibits a Sen's slope of −44.11 to 62.48 mm, −15.29 to 41.58 mm, −6.08 and 71.26 mm, and 2.20–64.86 mm, respectively. The decadal trend at monthly time step in AERIII, AERIIa, AERIIa and AERI exhibits a Sen's slope of −132.08 to −3.15 mm, −123.39 to −8.57 mm, −73.08 to −15.17 mm, and −80.02 to −5.21 mm, respectively. Decrease in rainfall is expected to affect agriculture, energy, water resources, sanitation and socio-economic aspects. Rainfall pattern shows spatio-temporal variability over Zambia. The results provide valuable input into the National Adaptation Plan and also useful for strategic planning purposes in water resources management under a changing climate. It is evident that spatio-temporal time steps utilized in this study provides new insights of rainfall trends at seasonal, monthly, and annual and decadal time steps.

Summary: Background: The causes for immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) are diverse and the incidence trends of IMIDs from specific causes are rarely studied. The study aims to investigate the pattern and trend of IMIDs from 1990 to 2019. Methods: We collected detailed information on six major causes of IMIDs, including asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis, between 1990 and 2019, derived from the Global Burden of Disease study in 2019. The average annual percent change (AAPC) in number of incidents and age standardized incidence rate (ASR) on IMIDs, by sex, age, region, and causes, were calculated to quantify the temporal trends. Findings: In 2019, rheumatoid arthritis, atopic dermatitis, asthma, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease accounted 1.59%, 36.17%, 54.71%, 0.09%, 6.84%, 0.60% of overall new IMIDs cases, respectively. The ASR of IMIDs showed substantial regional and global variation with the highest in High SDI region, High-income North America, and United States of America. Throughout human lifespan, the age distribution of incident cases from six IMIDs was quite different. Globally, incident cases of IMIDs increased with an AAPC of 0.68 and the ASR decreased with an AAPC of −0.34 from 1990 to 2019. The incident cases increased across six IMIDs, the ASR of rheumatoid arthritis increased (0.21, 95% CI 0.18, 0.25), while the ASR of asthma (AAPC = −0.41), inflammatory bowel disease (AAPC = −0.72), multiple sclerosis (AAPC = −0.26), psoriasis (AAPC = −0.77), and atopic dermatitis (AAPC = −0.15) decreased. The ASR of overall and six individual IMID increased with SDI at regional and global level. Countries with higher ASR in 1990 experienced a more rapid decrease in ASR. Interpretation: The incidence patterns of IMIDs varied considerably across the world. Innovative prevention and integrative management strategy are urgently needed to mitigate the increasing ASR of rheumatoid arthritis and upsurging new cases of other five IMIDs, respectively. Summary: Background: Nutrition inadequacy during childhood and adolescence can cause suboptimal growth, intergenerational effects on offspring and an increased risk of chronic diseases in adulthood. There is little information on the prevalence and drivers of malnutrition in children aged 5–19 years, in the South-East Asian setting, since most existing interventions have to date targeted undernutrition. We assessed the national prevalence of nutritional indicators, their trends, and associated risk factors among children aged 5–19 years from 11 countries of WHO South-East Asia Region (SEA Region) in order to provide evidence to guide future policy direction. Methods: We included 5,210,646 children for analysis from 345 studies and 25 survey datasets. A Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess the quality of the study. Bayesian regression models were used to estimate the prevalence of malnutrition between 2000 and 2030, and a series of subgroup analyses were performed to assess variation in pooled estimates by different socio-demographic and lifestyle factors. The protocol was registered with PROSPERO database (CRD42023400104). Findings: Overall, pooled analysis demonstrated that indicators of undernutrition in SEA is predicted to decrease between 2000 and 2030 including stunting (36.6%–27.2%), thinness (29.5%–6.2%), and underweight (29.2%–15.9%). However, a substantial increase in prevalence of overweight (6.0% in 2000–16.9% in 2030), and obesity (2.6%–9.5%) are predicted. The prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies between 2000 and 2030 is predicted to decrease–vitamin A by 84% and vitamin D by 53%. Parents' education levels and household wealth were inversely associated with malnutrition. Children's health-related behaviours, such as unhealthy dietary habits and spending more time watching TV, playing games, or using the computer, were associated with increased chance of overweight and obesity. There were no clear signs of publication bias in our study. Interpretation: Our analysis highlights the pattern of a double burden of malnutrition, with clear differences between different socio-demographic groups. Despite a substantial reduction in the prevalence of stunting, underweight, and anaemia since 2000, an emerging increase in overweight/obesity and micronutrient deficiencies warrants urgent attention. Background: Brain cancer is a serious issue in the global burden of diseases. This observational research aimed to assess trends of the brain cancer incidence and mortality in the world in the period 1990–2019. Methods: Brain cancer incidence and mortality data were retrieved from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study database. The joinpoint regression analysis was done to assess the brain cancer indicence and mortality trends: the average annual percent change (AAPC) along with its 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was calculated. Results: In both sexes, the highest age-standardized rates of incidence and mortality were found in high-income regions (Europe and America), while the lowest were observed in the African Region. A significant rise in brain cancer incidence rates both in males and females was observed in all regions, with one exception of a significantly decreased trend only among males in the South-East Asia Region. Among countries with increased trends in incidence and mortality from brain cancer, Cuba experienced the most marked increase in both incidence (AAPC = +5.7% in males and AAPC = +5.4% in females) and mortality rates (AAPC = +5.5% in males and AAPC = +5.1% in females). Among countries that experienced a decline in brain cancer incidence and mortality, Hungary and Greenland showed the most marked decline in both sexes (equally by −1.0%). Conclusion: Brain cancer shows increasing global incidence rates in both sexes and represents a priority for prevention and further research.

Monthly precipitation data that span from 1986 – 2019 (34) years were downloaded from the website of Nigeria Meteorological Agency, (NIMET), Abuja, Nigeria and were used to assess rainfall trend and drought occurrences in the Sudan Savanna of Nigeria. The non-parametric Mann – Kendall test was employed to test for trends while Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was used to generate SPI values and graphs. Our findings show that rainfall is on the declining trend in Gombe (z-value = -0.5930) and Kaduna (z-value = -2.520) but on increasing trend in Sokoto (z-value = 1.9272). Kaduna alone with P-value of 0.0117 which is less than 0.05 level of significance showed monotonic declining trend. In Sokoto, even though there is an increase, it is not monotonic since the P- value of 0.0540 is greater than the significant value of 0.05. The SPI values show only two extreme droughts in Kaduna in 2004 and 2013 with SPI of -2.04 and -2.08 respectively. Some of the years experienced between moderate to severe drought in all the stations while near normal condition is predominant in all the stations. Apart from the only incidence of extreme flooding in Sokoto in 2019 with SPI of 2.755, there were a few incidences of severe wetness or moderate wetness for the other years in all the stations.

Aerosols are one of the important atmospheric constituents and exert indirect impact on climate through the modification of microphysical and radiative properties of clouds that in turn perturb the precipitation pattern. Thus, the long term quantification of changes in aerosol and cloud characteristics and their interactions on both temporal as well as spatial scale will provide a crucial information for the better assessment of future climate change. In present study, 18 years (2003–2020) MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) derived aerosol-cloud dataset over the Northern Indian Ocean (NIO) were analysed to assess climatology and trend of aerosol, cloud characteristics and their correlation. We found a strong heterogeneity in spatio-temporal variation of aerosol and cloud parameters over the NIO that are more prominent for the coastal region. The climatological mean of aerosol loading is found high (AOD ≥ 0.5) over the outflow region along the Indian sub-continent and low (AOD ≤ 0.2) over the northern equatorial open ocean. The climatological mean of cloud properties shows dominance of optically thicker deep convective (CTP 700 hPa and CTT > 273 K) over the northwestern Arabian Sea (AS). Similarly, bigger effective radii (>17 µm) observed along the equatorial open ocean whereas smaller CER (0.003 yr−1) suggesting a significant impact of sub-continental outflow over the regions. The spatial correlation of cloud properties with respect to AOD shows a positive slope for CER (0.14) and CF (0.48) and a negative for COD (−0.19), LWP (−0.18), CTT (−0.37), CTP (−0.41). The present study provides in-depth information about the aerosol-cloud characteristics for a long term scale over NIO and could be useful in regional aerosol-cloud interaction induced climate forcing estimation.

Abstracts: Background: Lower respiratory infections (LRIs) are an important public health problem in China. This study aimed to estimate the fatal burden of LRIs in China and trends from 1990 to 2019, thereby making targeted prevention strategies. Methods: Annual deaths and mortality were collected from the GBD 2019. Estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) of age-standardized mortality were calculated to quantify the trends of LRI mortality. We also analyzed four aetiologies and 14 risk factors. Results: In China, total deaths due to LRIs decreased from 543,901 (95 %UI 472,378–606,600) in 1990 to 185,264 (95 %UI 160,993–216,219) in 2019. From 1990–2019, the age-standardized mortality decreased by an average of 5.68 % (95 %CI 5.46 %–5.89 %) per year, whereas the reduction among adults older than 70 years (EAPC=−2.56,95 %CI −2.68 to −2.43) was slower than that among children under 5 years (EAPC=−10.11,95 %CI −10.46 to −9.76). Moreover, Streptococcus pneumoniae was the first leading aetiology of LRI mortality among all ages. Although LRI mortality attributable to child undernutrition decreased rapidly from 2000 to 2019, alcohol use (EAPC=−1.06,95 %CI −1.40 to −0.72), smoking (EAPC=−3.70,95 %CI −3.89 to −3.51), and ambient particulate matter pollution (EAPC=−4.00,95 %CI −4.28 to −3.73) remained serious risk factors. Conclusions: LRIs remain an important health problem in China particularly in children under 5 years and adults older than 70 years. Continuous efforts are needed to promote maternal and child health, control smoking and alcohol use, and improve ambient air quality. More researches focusing on LRIs are required to provide targeted and updated prevention strategies.

Background: Asthma prevalence estimates among adults are limited for urban–rural classification across sociodemographic characteristics. Objectives: This study examined current asthma prevalence and annual trends by 6-level urban–rural categories across sociodemographic characteristics among US adults. Methods: Asthma prevalence for 2020 and annual trends for 2012-20 were estimated using Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data. The 2013 National Center for Health Statistics urban and rural categories were used to define urban–rural status. Results: Current asthma prevalence was higher in medium (9.7%; prevalence ratio 1.103 [95% CI 1.037, 1.174]) and small (9.9%; 1.111 [1.031, 1.197]) metro than in large fringe metropolitan (8.6%), was higher in micropolitan (10.2%) than in both large fringe (8.6%; 1.115 [1.042, 1.194]) and large central metropolitan (8.8%; 1.080 [1.001, 1.066]) areas. Prevalence by sociodemographic characteristics varied between urban–rural scheme; the prevalence was significantly higher among adults aged 55-64 years in micropolitan (11.9%), women in small metro (12.8%), and other race non-Hispanic in noncore (most rural) (13.6%) areas, adults without a high school diploma in micropolitan areas (13.8%), household income

Background: This study aimed to provide a detailed analysis of the temporal trends of cancer incidence rates for individuals aged 0–19 years in selected regions globally from 1978 to 2012. Methods: Data were obtained from Volumes V-XI of Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5), published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. A total of 53 registries in 23 regions from the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania that contained information on cancer incidence throughout 1978-2012 (35 years) were included in this study. Joinpoint regression was used for the analysis of trends. Results: Most regions showed increasing trends in overall childhood cancer among children (aged 0-14 years) and adolescents (aged 15-19 years). Nearly all regions showed rising trends in childhood and adolescent leukemia incidence rates, whereas the incidence of lymphoma among children generally decreased. Only France, Australia, and New Zealand showed decreasing trends for malignant central nervous system (CNS) tumors among adolescents. Kidney cancer and bone cancer incidence rates remained stable for most regions. The incidence of thyroid cancer among adolescents increased in most regions and that of testicular cancer decreased in approximately one-half of the regions studied. Conclusion: The international temporal trends of cancer incidents among children and adolescents are varied by region, cancer type, age group, and gender, and have changed over time.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: Multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRB) result in nosocomial infections and a substantial disease burden for hospitalised patients worldwide. However, strategies to control drug resistance at the hospital level are lacking. In this study, we aimed to find important indicators for risk assessment and predicting MDRB infections in the hospital. Methods: Using real-world data and machine learning models, we conducted a retrospective study from 2010 to 2020 in a teaching hospital to analyse the trends and characteristics of MDRB infections. Combining 39 hospital indicators, we used a random forest model and cross-correlation analysis to explore the important factors affecting MDRB and their predictive power. We built a decision tree model to predict the number of hospitalised patients with MDRB infection. Results: The number of hospitalised rescues and rate of rational perioperative antibacterial drug use in type I and II incision operations were correlated with the number of patients with MDRB infection after 1–2 months. The number of hospitalised operations and rate of antibiotics use in emergency patients had an effect on current MDRB-susceptible patients. The indicators, including hospital operation volume and antibacterial drug use, had a positive or negative quantitative relationship with the number of patients with MDRB infection, and their thresholds could be fit to the MDRB prediction model. Conclusion: Surgical, emergency, and hospitalised rescue patients showed the highest risk of MDRB infection. Standardised indicators such as clinical pathway rate and rational antibiotic use rate could be used to control the development and spread of MDRB infections in the hospital.

Monthly rainfall data for Blue Nile Basin (BNB) were obtained from the Ethiopian Meteorological Authority (1950–2018). Long-term trends in the BNB annual and monthly rainfall are investigated in this study. The challenges of the paper were to explore the impact of climate change on the study area using sound practical methods. The paper used the widely used statistical methods to find precisely the significance of the impact of climate change rainfall variability and distribution both spatially and temporally in the BNB. The statistical significance of the trend in the study is calculated by the Mann-Kendall (MK) test. Data were analyzed using the coefficient of variation, anomaly index, and precipitation concentration index. The coefficient of variation is high in Kiremt rainfall which implies more inter-annual variability of Bega rainfall than Kiremt (Coefficient of Variation (CV): Bega˃ Belg˃ Kiremt season). Based on Precipitation Concentration Index (PCI) value, the number of moderate concentration years (89.9%) has been increasing through time and the study area has encountered successive years of drought. The results showed that the annual, Bega, Belg, and Kiremt precipitation over the whole of BNB is significantly decreasing except Bega season with a magnitude of 36.38, 3.8, 7.8, and 24.7 mm per decade respectively. The rainfall in the study area is characterized by a high CV. Moreover, prolonged droughts have become common which adversely affects the agricultural system. It was also found that very low values of rainfall anomalies that correspond to severe droughts were associated with El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events.

Text summarization automatically produces a summary containing important sentences and includes all relevant important information from the original document. One of the main approaches, when viewed from the summary results, are extractive and abstractive. An extractive summary is heading towards maturity and now research has shifted towards abstractive summation and real-time summarization. Although there have been so many achievements in the acquisition of datasets, methods, and techniques published, there are not many papers that can provide a broad picture of the current state of research in this field. This paper provides a broad and systematic review of research in the field of text summarization published from 2008 to 2019. There are 85 journal and conference publications which are the results of the extraction of selected studies for identification and analysis to describe research topics/trends, datasets, preprocessing, features, techniques, methods, evaluations, and problems in this field of research. The results of the analysis provide an in-depth explanation of the topics/trends that are the focus of their research in the field of text summarization; provide references to public datasets, preprocessing and features that have been used; describes the techniques and methods that are often used by researchers as a comparison and means for developing methods. At the end of this paper, several recommendations for opportunities and challenges related to text summarization research are mentioned.

Background: High-income countries yield mixed evidence concerning the long-term trends of neighbourhood inequalities in health outcomes. The reasons why these inequalities persist and the factors driving any changes over time remain unclear. We analysed trends in general neighbourhood differences in mortality and hospitalisation, compared specific area-level and individual-level income effects, and assessed whether area-level effects were attributable to the neighbourhood population composition. Methods: This prospective cohort study used individual-level register-linked information on sociodemographic factors covering the total population of 20–64-year-olds living in Finnish cities at the beginning of seven four-year periods in 1991–2018 (N = 952,493–1,200,431). We used random-effects Poisson models to assess all-cause and external mortality and hospitalisations among individuals nested in postal-code areas. Results: The general contextual effect of the neighbourhood on all-cause mortality and hospitalisation was stable across time, with a median incidence-rate ratio of around 1.20–1.30, and it was mainly attributable to the population's composition. The association between area-level income and both mortality and hospitalisation was also robust and increased slightly even after accounting for population composition. The lowest neighbourhood income quintile in 2015–2018 had 15% (95% CI:5–26%) and 30% (95% CI:15–47%) excess mortality among men and women, respectively. These differentials were particularly large for external causes, but all area-level income associations were much smaller than the corresponding individual-level associations. Conclusion: The overall relevance of the neighbourhood context to mortality and hospitalisation was stable across time, and generally attributable to population composition. However, there were substantial relative area-level income disparities between neighbourhoods, which had grown over time.

Background: Asthma is an important contributor to the burden of non-communicable diseases in China. Understanding spatial, temporal, and demographic patterns in asthma mortality is relevant to the design and implementation of targeted interventions. Methods: This study collected information on asthma deaths occurring across 605 disease surveillance points (DSPs) as recorded in the population-based national mortality surveillance system (NMSS) of China. Asthma was defined according to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision code J45-J46. Estimates of age-standardized mortality rates and total national asthma deaths were calculated based on yearly population data. Statistical analysis was performed to investigate the influence of various factors on asthma mortality. Results: Between 2014 and 2020, a total of 40 116 asthma deaths occurred in DSPs. Standardized asthma mortality per 100 000 people decreased from 1.79 (95% CI: 1.74–1.83) in 2014 to 1.07 (95% CI: 1.03–1.10) in 2020 in China. In 2020, the overall asthma mortality rate was higher for male patients than for female patients, and asthma mortality rates increased substantially with age. Age-standardized asthma mortality per 100,000 people exhibited significant geographic variation, ranging from 0.93 (95% CI: 0.89–0.98) in Eastern China to 1.04 (95% CI: 0.98–1.10) in Central China and 1.37 (95% CI: 1.29–1.45) in Western China in 2020. Asthma mortality in urban areas appeared to be higher than in rural areas. Socioeconomic factors, including gross domestic product per capita and density of hospital beds per 10,000 population, may be related to asthma mortality. Male asthma patients who lived in rural areas and were aged 65 years and above were generally at high risk of asthma-related mortality. Conclusions: This study found a spatial and temporal trend for a reduction in asthma deaths over seven years in China; however, there remain important sociodemographic groups that have not secured the same decrease in mortality rates. Trial registration: This was a purely observational study and thus registration was not required.

Background: Human sapovirus (SaV) is an important etiologic agent of childhood diarrhea. This study aims to investigate the burden of SaV infection in childhood diarrhea in Japan from 2009–2019, to understand the changes in SaV infection after the introduction of rotavirus (RV) vaccination in Japan in 2011. Methods: Stool samples were collected from children aged ≤ 12 years old with acute gastroenteritis (AGE) who visited outpatient clinics of six prefectures in Japan. The viral RNA was detected by RT-PCR and genogroups and genotypes were determined through sequence-based analysis. Results: Among 5697 stool samples, 318 (5.6%) samples remained SaV-positives showing the highest prevalence in June and 12–24 month aged children. The most predominant genotype was GI.1 (56.8%), followed by GI.2 (19.2%), GII.1 (10.8%), GIV.1 (9.4%), GI.3 (1.7%), GII.2 (1.4%), GII.3 and GII.5 (0.3%). Importantly, an increasing trend (P = 0.016) of SaV infection was observed during this period. In particular, SaV-detection rate was increased significantly (P = 0.033) from 4.3% in pre-rotavirus (RV)-vaccination era to 6.1% in post-RV-vaccination era. We provided evidence that this increase in SaV infection was mainly attributed by coinfections. Conclusions: The upward trend of SaV infection, particularly after the introduction of RV-vaccination, is an emerging concern. Attention should be paid to control this upward trend of SaV infection to ensure maximum benefits of implementation of RV vaccines towards reducing overall childhood diarrhea worldwide.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) diagnosis rate and the changing landscape of medical and surgical management of BPH over the last decade using national population data of South Korea. Methods: The present study analyzed data of patients diagnosed with BPH (N40) who underwent medical treatment or surgery in 3% of the national patient sample of the Health Insurance and Review Assessment database each year between 2012 and 2018. The primary outcome was the proportion of medical and surgical treatment for BPH. It was evaluated each year between 2012 and 2018. Secondary outcomes included total BPH diagnosis rate in each year of the study period. BPH diagnosis rate by age group was evaluated. The proportion of medical and surgical treatment for BPH according to the type of medical institution was investigated. Results: The proportion of surgical treatment was 1.2% in 2012, 1.0% in 2013, 1.0% in 2014, 0.9% in 2015, 0.8% in 2016, 0.7% 2018, and 0.8% 2018, showing a progressive overall decrease from 2012 to 2018. The rate of surgical treatment for BPH increased with increasing age during the study period, showing a progressive overall increase (from 9,202 per 100,000 men in 2012 to 11,610 per 100 000 men in 2018). The number of patients with BPH was increased steadily from 2012 to 2018 in all age groups. The rate of surgical treatment in tertiary referral hospitals was the highest during the study period, followed by that in general hospitals, hospitals, and clinics. Conclusions: In Korea, the diagnosis rate of BPH was steadily increasing during the study period. Overall surgical treatment gradually decreased compared with an increase in medical treatment among all treatments for BPH. Thus, a comprehensive treatment plan for BPH should be established considering this trend.

E-cigarette use increased from 2017 to 2019 and then declined in 2020 among U.S. adults. It is important to understand whether the decline differed by smoking status and sociodemographic groups and whether daily e-cigarette use has subsequently changed. This study estimated e-cigarette use prevalence in 2019 and 2020 by analyzing the pooled National Health Interview Survey (n = 63,565) in 2022. Multivariable logistics regressions were performed to examine biannual change in current and daily e-cigarette use, overall and stratified by cigarette smoking status, sociodemographic factors, and subjective depression frequency. Among US adults, change in current e-cigarette use during 2019–2020 differed by smoking status (cigarette smoking status × year, p =.01) and race/ethnicity (race/ethnicity × year, p =.03). Current e-cigarette use prevalence decreased among current cigarette smokers (11.7 % to 8.0 %, p = 0.0001) but not among former or never smokers, and among Non-Hispanic White adults (5.1 % to 4.2 %, p = 0.04) and Non-Hispanic Black adults (3.4 % to 1.6 %, p = 0.0003) but not among other racial and ethnic groups. Current e-cigarette use also declined among those 25–64 years old but not among young adults 18–24 years old. Daily e-cigarette use did not significantly change during 2019–2020 in the overall sample (2.3 % to 2.0 %, p = 0.10), but declined among adults who were Non-Hispanic Black (2.4 % to 0.9 %, p = 0.0007), aged 35–44 years, and lived below the federal poverty level. Adults with monthly depressive episodes (vs without) continued to have a higher prevalence of current (7.0 % vs 3.0 %) and daily e-cigarette use (3.6 % vs 1.6 %) in 2020. Continuous monitoring of cross-population differences in adult e-cigarette use is warranted.

Coomprhensive data on temporal trends in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and outcomes in people living with HIV are limited. Using retrospective data on 50,284 US Veterans living with HIV (VLWH) who received care in the VA from 2001 to 2019, we calculated the prevalence and incidence estimates of CVD risk factors and outcomes, as well as the average annual percent changes (AAPC) in the estimates. The mean age of the Veterans increased from 47.8 (9.1) years to 58.0 (12.4) years during the study period. The population remained predominantly (>95%) male and majority Black (∼50%). The prevalence of the CVD outcomes increased progressively over the study period: coronary artery disease (3.9%–18.7%), peripheral artery disease (2.3%, 10.3%), ischemic cerebrovascular disease (1.1%–9.9%), and heart failure (2.4%–10.5%). There was a progressive increase in risk factor burden, except for smoking which declined after 2015. The AAPC in prevalence was statistically significant for the CVD outcomes and risk factors. When adjusted for age, the predicted prevalence of CVD risk factors and outcomes showed comparable (but attenuated) trends. There was generally a comparable (but attenuated) trend in incidence of CVD outcomes, procedures, and risk factors over the study period. The use of statins increased from 10.6% (2001) to 40.8% (2019). Antiretroviral therapy usage increased from 77.7% (2001) to 85.0% (2019). In conclusion, in a retrospective analysis of large-scale VA data we found the burden and incidence of several CVD risk factors and outcomes have increased among VLWH over the past 20 years.

The increase in adult height for 150 years is linked to overall improvements in nutrition, hygiene, and living standards. Height is positively associated with general health and success on various levels (e.g. quality of life, earnings or happiness). The aim of this study was to investigate whether different subgroups show different trends across birth cohorts. We wanted to know whether taller individuals considered themselves as healthier and their quality of life as better than shorter individuals.We included 19,435 participants from the Swiss population-based Health Survey 2017. GAM were used to assess nonlinear associations between height and birth year. Multinomial logistic regression was used to predict probabilities of self-rated health in relation to height.The increase in average height slows down from the 1970s birth cohorts. Participants with parents from Central/Northern/Western Europe (men 177.9 cm, women: 165.1 cm) or Eastern Europe (men 178.7 cm, women: 165.7 cm) were taller than participants with parents from South America (men 174.3 cm, women: 161. cm) and Asia (men 173.2 cm, women: 160.1 cm). Participants with tertiary education were taller than participants from education levels (mean difference men: 4.5 cm, women: 5.0 cm). Height was positively associated with self-declared aspects of health and life satisfaction.These results support the conclusion that body height as a co-factor of health aspects should be considered in public health research. Although adult body height can no longer be influenced, nutritional status and thus also healthy growth can be influenced in childhood by public health programs, by eliminating social inequalities, and by strengthen healthy living conditions.

Background: Interest in plant-based eating has increased alongside increased variety and availability of highly processed plant-based meat and dairy alternatives. The impact of the shifting commercial landscape and public interest in plant-based eating on dietary intake is unknown., Objectives: To examine trends in the consumption and composition of plant-based diets in the United States adults., Methods: Serial cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used to assess trends in the proportion of United States adults aged ≥20 y consuming a plant-based diet (defined as ≥50% total protein from plants on a 24-h dietary recall) from 1999-2000 to 2017-March 2020 (n = 51,698). Trends in processing level (percentage energy intake from ultraprocessed foods) and diet quality [Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2020 scores] were assessed in the subset of adults consuming plant-based diets (n = 8327)., Results: The proportion of United States adults consuming plant-based diets increased from 14.4% (95% CI: 12.9%, 16.0%) to 17.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 15.5%, 19.1%; P = 0.005 for trend). In all survey cycles, ultraprocessed foods accounted for the majority of energy intake, and ultraprocessed food intake in plant-based diets did not significantly change over time [50.7% kcal (95% CI: 47.3%, 54.1%) in 1999-2000 compared with 52.7% kcal (95% CI: 49.7%, 55.6%) in 2017-March 2020; P for trend = 0.34]. The quality of plant-based diets, measured by HEI-2020 scores, improved from 52.1 (95% CI: 49.7, 54.6) to 55.8 (95% CI: 54.1, 57.5; P for trend <0.001)., Conclusions: Between 1999 and March 2020, the proportion of United States adults consuming a plant-based diet increased. Among people consuming plant-based diets, ultraprocessed foods contributed most to energy intake and there was no sustained change in intake over time. Background: Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC), the second most prevalent thyroid cancer after papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), tends to metastasize distantly, leading to poorer outcomes. Despite substantial research, a holistic bibliometric analysis of FTC literature is lacking. This study aims to fill this gap by employing bibliometric methods to track FTC research evolution., Methods: English FTC publications were systematically gathered from the Web of Science. Bibliometric analysis, using R, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Excel, synthesized data and explored global research trends and topics., Results: From 2000 to 2023, 9086 authors from 1953 institutions across 75 countries contributed to 1776 papers in 491 academic journals on FTC. The last two decades have witnessed a steady increase in publications related to FTC, with the United States leading in terms of publication volume. The United States dominated both in publications and citations, with the National Cancer Institute and Sheue-Yann Cheng as leading contributors. The journal 'Thyroid' featured the most publications, while the 'Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism' ranked highest in citation frequency. Research focused on gene expression analysis and preoperative diagnostics, with recent trends shifting toward prognosis management and machine learning due to advances in medical technology and increased health awareness., Conclusion: This comprehensive bibliometric analysis has mapped the landscape of FTC research, highlighting key contributors, institutions, and thematic trends. Current discourse predominantly revolves around genetic analysis, prognostic determinants, and preoperative diagnostics in FTC. Background: The subspecialized, clinically complex nature of neurosurgery should not result in marginalization or under-representation of neurosurgical scientific output. This study aims to provide an overview of the trends of neurosurgical publications in high-impact medical journals during the past 3 decades., Methods: An electronic database search was performed to identify all articles affiliated with neurosurgery departments published in 10 highly regarded medical journals. The trend of the proportion of neurosurgical publications to total publications in these journals was examined over time. Subgroup analyses on the basis of location, setting, domain, grant source, and topic of the articles were performed., Results: Overall, 2090 neurosurgical publications were identified in the selected journals, comprising 0.26% of those journals' publications. The proportion of neurosurgical publications to total publications in these journals increased over time, from 0.03% before 1991 to 0.35% after 2020. Most studies were single-center (82.7%), clinical (52.4%), and primary research (89%). The United States (40.1%), China (12.4%) and the United Kingdom (7.1%) had the greatest number of neurosurgical publications among those analyzed. The share of clinical neurosurgical articles increased over time compared with basic and translational articles (P = 0.01). Among neurosurgical subspecialties, neuro-oncology (60.1%), vascular (19.0%), and general (7.0%) had the greatest number of publications identified, with substantial increases in vascular publications over time. The mean number of citations per year received by neurosurgical articles has increased over time, from 1.65 (before 1991) to 4.12 (2010-2020)., Conclusions: Neurosurgery's proportion of high-impact journal publications has increased over time., (Copyright © 2024. Background: School-aged children are in the stage of permanent tooth eruption to replace primary teeth and this can be reached at a life stage when their health habits are being formed due to a large amount of time in school. However, data on the global trend in incidence of caries in permanent teeth in school-aged children are sparse. This study aimed to assess the trends in incidence of caries in permanent teeth in children aged 5 through 14 years from 1990 through 2019 at the global, regional, and national levels., Methods: The authors collected data on incidence of caries in permanent teeth in children aged 5 through 14 years from 1990 through 2019 from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) to assess trends at the global, regional, and national levels., Results: Globally, incident cases of caries in permanent teeth in children aged 5 through 14 years increased by 15.25% from 1990 through 2019, and the incidence rate remained stable during this period, with incidence rates of 34.04% in 1990 and 33.93% in 2019. The incidence rate increased at an average annual percentage change of 0.08% (95% CI, 0.06% to 0.10%) and 0.07% (95% CI, 0.05% to 0.09%) from 1990 through 2019 in low and low-middle sociodemographic index regions, respectively. An increasing trend also was observed in nearly one-half of GBD regions and more than one-half of the world's countries from 1990 through 2019 (P < .05)., Conclusions: Global incidence of caries in permanent teeth remained stable at a high level in children aged 5 through 14 years, but there was a trend toward increasing rates in nearly one-half of sociodemographic index or GBD regions and more than one-half of the world's countries and territories from 1990 through 2019. Objectives: The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has been increasing globally over recent decades; however, underlying reasons for the increase remain unclear. We analyzed trends in GDM rates and evaluated risk factors associated with the observed trends in Ontario, Canada., Methods: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study using the Better Outcomes Registry and Network Ontario, linked with the Canadian Institute for Health Information Discharge Abstract Database. All pregnant individuals who had a singleton hospital delivery from 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2020 were included. We calculated rates and 95% CIs for GDM by year of delivery and contrasted fiscal year 2019/20 with 2012/13. Temporal trends in GDM were quantified using crude and adjusted risk ratios by modified Poisson regression. We further quantified the temporal increase attributable to changes in maternal characteristics by decomposition analysis., Results: Among 1 044 258 pregnant individuals, 82 896 (7.9%) were diagnosed with GDM over the 8 years. GDM rate rose from 6.1 to 10.4 per 100 deliveries between fiscal years 2012/13 and 2019/20. The risk of GDM in 2019/20 was 1.53 times (95% CI 1.50-1.56) higher compared with 2012/13. 27% of the increase in GDM was due to changes in maternal age, 8 BMI, and Asian ethnicity., Conclusions: The GDM rate has been consistently increasing in Ontario, Canada. The contribution of increasing maternal age, pre-pregnancy obesity, and Asian ethnicity to the recent increase in GDM is notable. Background: We analyzed trends in cancer incidence and regional disparities of eight major types of cancer in Korea., Methods: This retrospective cohort study used the data of 17 cities/provinces from the Korea Central Cancer Registry (1999-2020) in South Korea. Age-standardized incidence rates (per 100,000 person-years), between-group variance (per 100,000 person-years) 2 , and annual percentage changes ( %) were calculated for the eight most common malignancies. Joinpoint regression was utilized to identify the points at which significant changes occur in cancer incidence or regional disparity trends over time to characterize these trends., Results: The incidence of stomach cancer decreased as regional disparity decreased and that of colorectal cancer initially increased but recently declined, showing fluctuations in regional disparity. The incidence and regional disparity in liver cancer decreased. The incidence of lung cancer remained stable, with reduced regional disparities. The incidence of breast cancer rose with increasing regional disparity, whereas the incidence of cervical cancer decreased, accompanied by decreased regional disparity. A significant increase in prostate cancer was found, with initially reduced regional disparities but later showed a resurgence. The incidence of thyroid cancer fluctuated alongside variations in regional disparities., Conclusion: This study revealed cancer incidence and regional variations in each cancer type in Korea. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the trends of healthy aging and investigate its determinants in the middle-aged population., Study Design: This was a longitudinal study., Methods: The sample comprised 3043 participants aged 45-59 years from the China Longitudinal Study of Health and Retirement 2011-2018. We plotted the prevalence across four waves and used ordered logistic models to investigate the determinants of cumulative times of healthy aging., Results: We enrolled 3043 middle-aged people in our study. The prevalence of healthy aging is 28.2% at baseline but subsequently decreased to 19.72% at wave 4. Active socializing consistently ranked the lowest among the five dimensions. Participants with older age (odds ratio [OR] = 0.95, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.94-0.97), low monthly income (OR = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.69-0.97) or lived in urban (OR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.70-0.94) were less likely to have per time increase in healthy aging. Participants with more than primary school degree (OR = 1.79, 95% CI: 1.31-2.46), high life satisfaction (OR = 2.38, 95% CI: 1.86-3.06), and good self-report health (OR = 1.97, 95% CI: 1.66-2.34) were more likely to have healthy aging., Conclusion: The number of middle-aged individuals in China who achieved healthy aging is declining and eventually less than one in five, which was far from ideal. Particular attention should be paid to older, women, urban dwellers, individuals with low income, low life satisfaction or poor self-report health. Introduction: The supply of elite professionals is crucial for economic development, yet little is understood about the appeal and influencing factors of these careers among young people across different economies. It remains unclear whether adolescents in academically high-performing economies growingly expect emerging technological jobs in response to evolving workforce demands., Methods: This research used the Programme for International Student Assessment 2000-2018 data in 24 high-performing educational systems to examine the two-decade trends in adolescents' expectations for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), medicine, law, business, and teaching careers. The popularity trend of these careers and the major impacts of gender, socioeconomic status, and academic ability were examined with multilevel logistic regression models., Results: The findings indicated that developed economies such as Singapore, Canada, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom have successfully attracted a greater proportion of students to elite careers. In contrast, many high-performing Asian economies, such as Korea, Japan, and Taipei, have not. STEM and medical fields primarily drew students with high math abilities, whereas legal professions attracted those with superior reading skills. Although girls generally expected teaching and legal careers and boys expected STEM fields, social and gender differences have narrowed over the past decades., Conclusions: Many Western developed economies effectively attract a larger share of adolescents to STEM careers than their Asian counterparts. Although gender and social disparities persist, their impact has diminished. Effective human resource planning should be based on each country's unique trends and influencing factors to promote greater equality and inclusion in the workforce., (© 2024 The Author(s).
