1. Liquid repellency enabled antipathogen coatings

Abstract: Currently, Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)—a respiratory contagion spreading through expiratory droplets—has evolved into a global pandemic, severely impacting the public health. Importantly, the emerging of immune evasion SARS-CoV-2 variants and the limited effect of current antivirals against SARS-CoV-2 in clinical trials suggested that alternative strategies in addition to the conventional vaccines and antivirals are required to successfully control the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we propose to use liquid-repellent coatings to prevent the spread of the disease in the absence of effective vaccines, antimicrobial agents, or therapeutics, wherein the deposition and penetration of pathogen droplets are prohibited. We use SARS-CoV-2 as a model pathogen and find that SARS-CoV-2 remnants are reduced by seven orders of magnitude on coated surfaces, yielding a repelling efficacy far outperforming the inactivation rate of disinfectants. The SARS-CoV-2 remnant scales exponentially with the liquid/solid adhesion, uncovering the mechanism and effective means for minimizing pathogen attachment. The antipathogen coating that both repels and inactivates pathogens is demonstrated by incorporating the super-liquid-repellent coating with antipathogen additives. Together with its versatility over a wide range of substrates and pathogens, the novel antipathogen coating is of considerable value for infection control in everyday life as well as during pandemics.

Abstract: Using 16 energy points of e+e− annihilation data collected in the vicinity of the J/ψ resonance with the BESIII detector and with a total integrated luminosity of around 100pb−1, we study the relative phase between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes of J/ψ decays. The relative phase between J/ψ electromagnetic decay and the continuum process (e+e− annihilation without the J/ψ resonance) is confirmed to be zero by studying the cross section lineshape of μ+μ− production. The relative phase between J/ψ strong and electromagnetic decays is then measured to be (84.9±3.6)∘ or (−84.7±3.1)∘ for the 2(π+π−)π0 final state by investigating the interference pattern between the J/ψ decay and the continuum process. This is the first measurement of the relative phase between J/ψ strong and electromagnetic decays into a multihadron final state using the lineshape of the production cross section. We also study the production lineshape of the multihadron final state ηπ+π− with η→π+π−π0, which provides additional information about the phase between the J/ψ electromagnetic decay amplitude and the continuum process. Additionally, the branching fraction of J/ψ→2(π+π−)π0 is measured to be (4.73±0.44)% or (4.85±0.45)%, and the branching fraction of J/ψ→ηπ+π− is measured to be (3.78±0.68)×10−4. Both of them are consistent with the world average values. The quoted uncertainties include both statistical and systematic uncertainties, which are mainly caused by the low statistics. Abstract: We report a study of the e+e−→D+D−π+π− process using e+e− collision data samples with an integrated luminosity of 2.5fb−1 at center-of-mass energies from 4.36 to 4.60GeV, collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The D1(2420)+ is observed in the D+π+π− mass spectrum. The mass and width of the D1(2420)+ are measured to be (2427.2±1.0stat.±1.2syst.)MeV/c2 and (23.2±2.3stat.±2.3syst.)MeV, respectively. In addition, the Born cross sections of the e+e−→D1(2420)+D−+c.c.→D+D−π+π− and e+e−→ψ(3770)π+π−→D+D−π+π− processes are measured as a function of the center-of-mass energy.

Abstract: The four decay modes D0→ϕπ0, D0→ϕη, D+→ϕπ+, and D+→ϕK+ are studied by using a data sample taken at the centre-of-mass energy s=3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb−1. The branching fractions of the first three decay modes are measured to be B(D0→ϕπ0)=(1.168±0.028±0.028)×10−3, B(D0→ϕη)=(1.81±0.46±0.06)×10−4, and B(D+→ϕπ+)=(5.70±0.05±0.13)×10−3, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. In addition, the upper limit of the branching fraction for D+→ϕK+ is given to be 2.1×10−5 at the 90% confidence level. The ratio of B(D0→ϕπ0) to B(D+→ϕπ+) is calculated to be (20.49±0.50±0.45)%, which is consistent with the theoretical prediction based on isospin symmetry between these two decay modes. Abstract: Using a data sample of e+e− collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb−1 collected with the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of s=3.773GeV, we search for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays D0→π0π0π0, π0π0η, π0ηη and ηηη using the double tag method. The absolute branching fractions are measured to be B(D0→π0π0π0)=(2.0±0.4±0.3)×10−4, B(D0→π0π0η)=(3.8±1.1±0.7)×10−4 and B(D0→π0ηη)=(7.3±1.6±1.5)×10−4 with the statistical significances of 4.8σ, 3.8σ and 5.5σ, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. No significant signal of D0→ηηη is found, and the upper limit on its decay branching fraction is set to be B(D0→ηηη)

Abstract: Using a data set of 2.93 fb−1 taken at a center-of-mass energy s=3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we perform a search for an extra U(1) gauge boson, also denoted as a dark photon. We examine the initial state radiation reactions e+e−→e+e−γISR and e+e−→μ+μ−γISR for this search, where the dark photon would appear as an enhancement in the invariant mass distribution of the leptonic pairs. We observe no obvious enhancement in the mass range between 1.5 and 3.4 GeV/c2 and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the mixing strength of the dark photon and the Standard Model photon. We obtain a competitive limit in the tested mass range.

Abstract: Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at six center-of-mass energies between 4.008 and 4.600 GeV, we observe the processes e+e−→ϕϕω and e+e−→ϕϕϕ. The Born cross sections are measured and the ratio of the cross sections σ(e+e−→ϕϕω)/σ(e+e−→ϕϕϕ) is estimated to be 1.75±0.22±0.19 averaged over six energy points, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The results represent first measurements of these interactions.

Abstract: We report the first observation of the decay Λc+→Σ−π+π+π0, based on data obtained in e+e− annihilations with an integrated luminosity of 567 pb−1 at s=4.6 GeV. The data were collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage rings. The absolute branching fraction B(Λc+→Σ−π+π+π0) is determined to be (2.11±0.33(stat.)±0.14(syst.))%. In addition, an improved measurement of B(Λ+c→Σ−π+π+) is determined as (1.81±0.17(stat.)±0.09(syst.))%.

Abstract: Based on e+e− annihilation data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at 13 center-of-mass energies from 4.008 to 4.600 GeV, measurements of the Born cross section of e+e−→pp¯π0 are performed. No significant resonant structure is observed in the measured energy dependence of the cross section. The upper limit on the Born cross section of e+e−→Y(4260)→pp¯π0 at the 90% C.L. is determined to be 0.01 pb. The upper limit on the ratio of the branching fractions B(Y(4260)→pp¯π0)B(Y(4260)→π+π−J/ψ) at the 90% C.L. is determined to be 0.02%. Keywords: Hadrons, Cross section measurements, Y(4260)

Abstract: We study the decays of J/ψ and ψ(3686) to the final states Σ(1385)0Σ¯(1385)0 and Ξ0Ξ¯0 based on a single baryon tag method using data samples of (1310.6±7.0)×106 J/ψ and (447.9±2.9)×106 ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The decays to Σ(1385)0Σ¯(1385)0 are observed for the first time. The measured branching fractions of J/ψ and ψ(3686) to Ξ0Ξ¯0 are in good agreement with, and much more precise than, the previously published results. The angular parameters for these decays are also measured for the first time. The measured angular decay parameter for J/ψ→Σ(1385)0Σ¯(1385)0, α=−0.64±0.03±0.10, is found to be negative, different to the other decay processes in this measurement. In addition, the “12% rule” and isospin symmetry in the decays of J/ψ and ψ(3686) to ΞΞ¯ and Σ(1385)Σ¯(1385) are tested.

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the absolute branching fraction for Λc+→Λμ+νμ. This measurement is based on a sample of e+e− annihilation data produced at a center-of-mass energy s=4.6 GeV, collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage rings. The sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 567 pb−1. The branching fraction is determined to be B(Λc+→Λμ+νμ)=(3.49±0.46(stat)±0.27(syst))%. In addition, we calculate the ratio B(Λc+→Λμ+νμ)/B(Λc+→Λe+νe) to be 0.96±0.16(stat)±0.04(syst).

Abstract: By analyzing 2.93fb−1 of data taken at the ψ(3770) resonance peak with the BESIII detector, we measure the branching fractions for the hadronic decays D+→KS0KS0K+, D+→KS0KS0π+, D0→KS0KS0 and D0→KS0KS0KS0. They are determined to be B(D+→KS0KS0K+)=(2.54±0.05stat.±0.12sys.)×10−3, B(D+→KS0KS0π+)=(2.70±0.05stat.±0.12sys.)×10−3, B(D0→KS0KS0)=(1.67±0.11stat.±0.11sys.)×10−4 and B(D0→KS0KS0KS0)=(7.21±0.33stat.±0.44sys.)×10−4, where the second one is measured for the first time and the others are measured with significantly improved precision over the previous measurements.

Abstract: Using a data set of 2.93 fb−1 taken at a center-of-mass energy of s=3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the process e+e−→J/ψγ→μ+μ−γ and determine the product of the branching fraction and the electronic width Bμμ⋅Γee=(333.4±2.5stat±4.4sys) eV. Using the earlier-published BESIII result for Bμμ=(5.973±0.007stat±0.037sys)%, we derive the J/ψ electronic width Γee=(5.58±0.05stat±0.08sys) keV.

Abstract: We extract the e+e−→π+π− cross section in the energy range between 600 and 900 MeV, exploiting the method of initial state radiation. A data set with an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb−1 taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider is used. The cross section is measured with a systematic uncertainty of 0.9%. We extract the pion form factor |Fπ|2 as well as the contribution of the measured cross section to the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to (g−2)μ. We find this value to be aμππ,LO(600–900MeV)=(368.2±2.5stat±3.3sys)⋅10−10, which is between the corresponding values using the BaBar or KLOE data.

Abstract: By analyzing a data set of 2.92 fb−1 of e+e− collision data taken at s=3.773 GeV and 106.41×106 ψ(3686) decays taken at s=3.686 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the branching fraction and the partial decay width for ψ(3770)→γχc0 to be B(ψ(3770)→γχc0)=(6.88±0.28±0.67)×10−3 and Γ[ψ(3770)→γχc0]=(187±8±19) keV, respectively. These are the most precise measurements to date.

Abstract: Using the data sets taken at center-of-mass energies above 4 GeV by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we search for the reaction e+e−→γISRX(3872)→γISRπ+π−J/ψ via the Initial State Radiation technique. The production of a resonance with quantum numbers JPC=1++ such as the X(3872) via single photon e+e− annihilation is forbidden, but is allowed by a next-to-leading order box diagram. We do not observe a significant signal of X(3872), and therefore give an upper limit for the electronic width times the branching fraction ΓeeX(3872)B(X(3872)→π+π−J/ψ)

Abstract: We report a measurement of the parameter yCP in D0–D¯0 oscillations performed by taking advantage of quantum coherence between pairs of D0D¯0 mesons produced in e+e− annihilations near threshold. In this work, doubly-tagged D0D¯0 events, where one D decays to a CP eigenstate and the other D decays in a semileptonic mode, are reconstructed using a data sample of 2.92 fb−1 collected with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy of s=3.773 GeV. We obtain yCP=(−2.0±1.3±0.7)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This result is compatible with the current world average. Abstract: The commercial success of flat panel displays, Blu-ray lasers, and light-emitting diodes has launched III-nitrides as the second most widely used semiconductor across the globe. Aluminum nitride (AlN) in particular is unique among common semiconductors as it possesses both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities as well as an enormous bandgap of 6.2 eV. This chapter reviews the recent advances in leveraging crystalline AlN for nonlinear optical frequency conversions ranging from ultraviolet to near-infrared regimes in a nanophotonic platform. We begin with applications of quadratic nonlinearities such as high-efficiency second-harmonic generation and the first nanophotonic optical parametric oscillator. We then move to cubic nonlinearities for realizing Raman lasing and Kerr microcomb formation. Finally, we highlight applications employing simultaneous quadratic and cubic nonlinearities for access to near-visible and ultraviolet microcombs. These achievements pose epitaxial AlN as a serious contender to conventional nonlinear materials such as silicon nitride and lithium niobate for chip-scale nonlinear optics.

Abstract: Background 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (22q11.2DS) is one of the strongest known genetic risk factors for developing schizophrenia. Individuals with 22q11.2DS have high rates of neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood, while in adulthood ∼25% develop schizophrenia. Similar to the general population, high rates of comorbidity are common in 22q11.2DS. Employing a dimensional approach where psychopathology is examined at the symptom-level as complementary to diagnostic categories in a population at such high genetic risk for schizophrenia can help gain a better understanding of how psychopathology is structured as well as its genetic underpinnings. This is the first study to examine the dimensional structure of a wide spectrum of psychopathology in the context of a homogeneous genetic etiology like 22q11.2DS. Methods We evaluated 331 individuals with 22q11.2DS, mean age (SD) = 16.9(8.7); 51% males, who underwent prospective comprehensive phenotyping. We sought to replicate previous findings by examining a bi-factor model that derives a general factor of psychopathology in addition to more specific dimensions of psychopathology (i.e., internalizing, externalizing and thought disorder). Results Psychopathology in 22q11.2DS was divided into one ‘general psychopathology’ factor and four specific dimensions (i.e., ‘anxiety’, ‘mood’, ‘ADHD’ and ‘psychosis’). The ‘psychosis’ symptoms loaded strongly on the ‘general psychopathology’ factor. Conclusions The similarity of the symptom structure of psychopathology between 22q11.2DS and community and clinical populations without the deletion indicate that 22q11.2DS can provide a model to explore alternative approaches to our current nosology. Our findings add to a growing literature indicating the need to reorganize current diagnostic classification systems.

Abstract: The history of Chinese buckwheat cultivation goes back to 1st and 2nd centuries BC. After thousands of years of cultivation and evolution, cultivated buckwheat is not only widely spread in China, but has also formed a number of varieties. Southwest China especially has plentiful resources of wild-type buckwheat, which has drawn the attention of the wider world. Until now, 27 buckwheat species have been named and reported in China, including 2 cultivated species and 25 wild species. They are widely distributed in Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Tibet, in the southwest of China, because of the complicated geographical environments of these regions, which have been described as the treasure of plant resources. In the future, the relationship between buckwheat species and their genetic diversity will be further clarified, and there will be a sizable breakthrough in the area of breeding new varieties and exploiting new buckwheat resources.

Understanding the gene function of buckwheat generates new solutions for improving its yields or other stress tolerances. Here, we give an overview of the types and functions of genes involved in buckwheat growth and development and response to environmental signals. This opens an excellent opportunity to develop stress-tolerant and nutritionally improved buckwheat in the future.

Abstract: There are two species of Chinese buckwheat, common buckwheat (CB) and Tartary Buckwheat (TB), cultivated in China. CB is native to the north of China, being cultivated before the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420–581 AD). However, TB grows and is widely cultivated in the southwest of China, since the Yuan and Ming Dynasties. During the last 20 years, 45 varieties or species of buckwheat have been examined and approved by national or provincial committees. Buckwheat can be planted in different rotation systems with other crops such as bean, potato, and sweet potato. The planting areas of buckwheat in China are mostly thinly populated with poor soil, cold weather, and locked traffic. Recently, with improvements in living standards, people have come to realize the unique nutritive value of buckwheat, making the demand for buckwheat produce increase rapidly.

Abstract: Buckwheat is an important source of bioactive compounds having many interesting pharmacological effects such as antioxidant activity and a stabilization effect on high blood pressure. Buckwheat sprouts, as a new vegetable, have received considerable attention from the sprout market because of their rich content of phytonutrients, including phenolic compounds, proteins, vitamins, and minerals, as well as its soft and slightly crispy texture and attractive fragrance. Here we summarize the research progress of buckwheat sprouts with regard to bioactive components, analytical methods, physiological effects, as well as the exogenous factors used to improve the quality of sprouts. This review highlights a few major recent developments in biotic and abiotic factors mediated by the production of flavonoids, as well as suggestions regarding further investigation.

Abstract: The Daya Bay experiment consists of functionally identical antineutrino detectors immersed in pools of ultrapure water in three well-separated underground experimental halls near two nuclear reactor complexes. These pools serve both as shields against natural, low-energy radiation, and as water Cherenkov detectors that efficiently detect cosmic muons using arrays of photomultiplier tubes. Abstract: The computational anatomy project has largely been a study of large deformations via diffeomorphic mapping. This article looks at various estimation problems within this setting, including disease scoring, segmentation, and template estimation. All are posed in the augmented orbit of unions of multiple atlases or templates. These make our generative Bayesian probability models multimodal, in which the posterior probability of interpreting a single image is shared across multiple atlases. We derive the maximum a posteriori estimation in this multimodal context for (i) disease scoring/classification of a single target image given multiple disease cohorts, (ii) segmentation of images, and (iii) atlas generation from populations.

Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter studies 64 patients with motor neuron disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), familial ALS (fALS), progressive muscular atrophy (PMA), and primary lateral sclerosis (PLS)) using multiple point stimulation motor unit number estimation (MUNE), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (1H MRSI), diffusion tensor imaging (MRDTI), and clinical measures at baseline every 3 months thereafter for 15 months. It discusses the substantial differences in MUNE noted among the motor neuron disease subgroups and mean values for each motor neuron disease subgroup that were significantly lower vs. controls vs. the normal control average. MUNE showed the greatest significant change over time of any measure, clinical or otherwise, tested in this study. The chapter reviews that MUNE clearly delineates lower motor neuron dysfunction, strongly correlates with important clinical functions, such as strength and respiration, and is a highly sensitive marker of disease progression over time. These features make MUNE an important tool for both the study of the pathophysiology of the motor neuron diseases as well as an important measure for incorporation into future clinical trials.

Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter reports the findings of retrospective and prospective studies with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in 129 patients who were referred to the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig MDA/ALS Research Center for the diagnostic evaluation of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The clinical diagnosis of ALS is based on identifying both upper motor neuron (UMN) and lower motor neuron (LMN) signs. Along with avoiding a false diagnosis of ALS, the main impetus of the chapter to develop UMN markers is to be able to make an accurate early diagnosis of ALS in those without initial UMN signs who are later determined to have the disease. TMS assesses structural and functional aspects of UMN involvement, and its combined use with neuroimaging may be more helpful than one individual test. This study is ongoing and when all of the results are available, UMN signs more objectively by combining different types of UMN testing, as opposed to using the clinical examination alone can be predicted.

Here, we present a protocol for a microbial swarming assay and to isolate the bacteria responsible for swarming activity. We describe steps for identifying bacteria using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and whole-genome sequencing. Abstract: Wild animals, as a vital component of our natural world, serve a crucial role in preserving ecological equilibrium and biodiversity. By delving into the genetic constitution of wild animal populations, the evolutionary history, genetic diversity, and adaptation mechanisms could be explored, thereby informing conservation strategies and safeguarding the future of these species. In order to study the genetic information of wild animals, it is necessary to extract high purity and high concentration of wild animal genomic DNA. In this work, a hydrophobic magnetic deep eutectic solvent (HMDES) based vortexed extraction was developed for the extraction of genomic DNA from leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis), hairy-crowned deer (Elaphodus cephalophus) and muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi) muscle tissue, respectively. Extraction conditions like the pH value, extraction time, temperature and the amount of HMDES used were optimized by single-factor experiments. Under the optimized condition, genomic DNA could be selectively extracted from the three animal tissues. The limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) of the proposed method were 2.86 ng/μL and 8.66 ng/μL, respectively. Meanwhile, the relative standard deviation (RSD) of the method precision and repeatability were 1.64 % and 5.57 % at 20 ng/μL, showing the method has good precision and repeatability. After extraction, the DNA extracted into the HMDES droplets can be quickly recovered and the HMDES can be recycled and reused. Abstract: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are widely considered to the effective therapeutics for fighting bacterial infections especially those associated with biofilm. However, biofilm microenvironments including hypoxia, limited H 2 O 2 , and high glutathione (GSH) level seriously limit the therapeutic efficacy of ROS-based strategies. Herein, we have developed an acidic biofilm microenvironment-responsive antibacterial nanoplatform consisting of copper-dopped bovine serum albumin (CBSA) loaded with copper peroxide (CuO 2 ) synthesized in situ and indocyanine green (ICG). The three-in-one nanotherapeutics (CuO 2 /ICG@CBSA) are capable of releasing Cu 2+ and H 2 O 2 in a slightly acidic environment, where Cu 2+ catalyzes the conversion of H 2 O 2 into hydroxyl radical (•OH) and consumes the highly expressed GSH to disrupt the redox homeostasis. With the assistance of an 808 nm laser, the loaded ICG not only triggers the production of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) by a photodynamic process, but also provides photonic hyperpyrexia that further promotes the Fenton-like reaction for enhancing •OH production and induces thermal decomposition of CuO 2 for the O 2 -self-supplying 1 O 2 generation. The CuO 2 /ICG@CBSA with laser irradiation demonstrates photothermal-augmented multi-mode synergistic bactericidal effect and is capable of inhibiting biofilm formation and eradicating the biofilm bacteria. Further in vivo experiments suggest that the CuO 2 /ICG@CBSA can effectively eliminate wound infections and accelerate wound healing. The proposed three-in-one nanotherapeutics with O 2 /H 2 O 2 -self-supplied ROS generating capability show great potential in treating biofilm-associated bacterial infections. Abstract: Heavy metal pollution of the soil affects the environment and human health. Masson pine is a good candidate for phytoremediation of heavy metal in mining areas. Microorganisms in the rhizosphere can help with the accumulation of heavy metal in host plants. However, studies on its rhizosphere bacterial communities under heavy metal pollution are still limited. Therefore, in this study, the chemical and bacterial characteristics of Masson pine rhizosphere under four different levels of heavy metal pollution were investigated using 16 S rRNA gene sequencing, soil chemistry and analysis of plant enzyme activities. The results showed that soil heavy metal content, plant oxidative stress and microbial diversity damage were lower the farther they were from the mine dump. The co-occurrence network relationship of slightly polluted soils (C1 and C2) was more complicated than that of highly polluted soils (C3 and C4). Relative abundance analysis indicated Sphingomonas and Pseudolabrys were more abundant in slightly polluted soils (C1 and C2), while Gaiella and Haliangium were more abundant in highly polluted soils (C3 and C4). LEfSe analysis indicated Burkholderiaceae, Xanthobacteraceae, Gemmatimonadaceae, Gaiellaceae were significantly enriched in C1 to C4 site, respectively. Mantel analysis showed that available cadmium (Cd) contents of soil was the most important factor influencing the bacterial community assembly. Correlation analysis showed that eight bacterial genus were significantly positively associated with soil available Cd content. Abstract: Waste-derived organics introduced to soils along with pharmaceutical active compounds (PhAC) are a crude mixture of compounds occurring in various size and polarity fractions. They affect the sorption of PhACs to soil; however, the relevant knowledge is still insufficient. The effects of different size and polarity fractions of manure-derived mobile organic matter (<63 µm) on the sorption of sulfadiazine, caffeine and atenolol to five topsoils were investigated. Mobilization of the PhACs was strongest in the presence of dissolved organic matter (mDOM, <0.45 µm), with a reduction of K d of sulfadiazine, caffeine and atenolol by mean factors of 0.66, 0.57 and 0.41, respectively. The mobilizing effects of colloidal organic matter (0.45-10 µm) were slightly smaller. Fine particulate organic matter (10-63 µm) reduced the sorption of the PhACs in slightly acidic soils (pH 6.0), but increased it in strongly acidic soil (pH 4.3). Furthermore, hydrophobic (HO-mDOM) and hydrophilic (HI-mDOM) fractions of mDOM reduced the sorption capacity but increased the sorption nonlinearity of PhACs in soils. Effects of HO-mDOM and HI-mDOM were PhAC specific. However, conventional nano drug delivery systems (NDDSs) for IBD face many challenges in targeting the intestine, such as physiological and pathological barriers, genetic variants, disease severity, and nutritional status, which often result in nonspecific tissue distribution and uncontrolled drug release. To address these limitations, stimulus-responsive NDDSs have received considerable attention in recent years due to their advantages in providing controlled release and enhanced targeting. This review provides an overview of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying IBD and summarizes recent advancements in microenvironmental stimulus-responsive nanocarriers for IBD therapy. These carriers utilize physicochemical stimuli such as pH, reactive oxygen species, enzymes, and redox substances to deliver drugs for IBD treatment. Additionally, pivotal challenges in the future development and clinical translation of stimulus-responsive NDDSs are emphasized. By offering insights into the development and optimization of stimulus-responsive drug delivery nanoplatforms, this review aims to facilitate their application in treating IBD. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This review highlights recent advancements in stimulus-responsive nano drug delivery systems (NDDSs) for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). 37. OSGIN1 regulates PM 2.5 -induced fibrosis via mediating autophagy in an in vitro model of COPD.

Abstract: Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) has been identified as a significant contributing factor to the exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It has been observed that PM 2.5 may induce lung fibrosis in COPD, although the precise molecular mechanism behind this remains unclear. In a previous study, we demonstrated that PM 2.5 upregulates oxidative stress induced growth inhibitor 1 (OSGIN1), which in turn leads to injury in airway epithelial cells, thereby, suggesting a potential link between PM 2.5 exposure and COPD. Based on this, we hypothesized that OSGIN1 plays a role in PM 2.5 -induced fibrosis in COPD. Human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEs) were treated with cigarette smoke extract (CSE) to construct an in vitro model of COPD. Our findings revealed that PM 2.5 increased fibrosis indicators and upregulated OSGIN1 in CSE-stimulated HBEs (CSE-HBEs), and knockdown of OSGIN1 reduced the expression of fibrosis indicators. Through the use of microRNA target prediction software and the Gene Expression Omnibus database, we predicted miRNAs that targeted OSGIN1 in COPD. Subsequently, real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot analysis confirmed that PM 2.5 modulated miR-654-5p to regulate OSGIN1 in CSE-HBEs. Western blot demonstrated that OSGIN1 induced autophagy, thereby exacerbating fibrosis in CSE-HBEs. 38. The causal link between nitrogen structure and physiological processes of Ulva prolifera as the causative species of green tides.

Abstract: Harmful algal blooms (HABs) increase with eutrophication depending on the nutrient structure (availability and ratios), but an unequivocal causal link between these factors is rarely established. Here, we provide support for the causal link between the nitrogen structure and physiological processes of Ulva prolifera as the causative species of Yellow Sea green tides (YSGTs) using in situ and laboratory experiments. The results showed that the components of nitrogen nutrients in seawater exhibited significant spatiotemporal variation. The concentration of NO 3 - -N showed a notable decreasing trend from south to north. Sufficient dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) induced increases in thalli nitrate reductase (NR) and glutamine synthetase (GS) activities. This could accelerate thalli uptake of nitrogen nutrients. The glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) activity was significantly upregulated with the increasing proportion of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in seawater. The change in nitrogen structure regulated the activity of NR during the long-distance floating migration of the YSGTs. And the activity of NR could modulate the nitric oxide (NO) content in the thalli. NO was used as a signal molecule to enhance the antioxidant defense system of thalli. The efficient antioxidant system in the thalli could reduce oxidative stress and effectively maintain high photosynthetic activity. The findings deepen our understanding of the relationship between nitrogen structures and key biological processes in macroalgae. 40. A global microbiome analysis reveals the ecological feature of Tistrella and its production of the bioactive didemnins in the marine ecosystem.

Abstract: Marine microorganisms like Tistrella are essential for producing bioactive compounds, including didemnins with antitumor and antiviral properties. However, our understanding of Tistrella's ecological features and didemnin production in natural environments is limited. In this study, we used genomics and metagenomics to show that Tistrella is widely distributed across natural habitats, especially in marine environments from the surface to 5000 m deep, with distinct non-random distribution patterns revealed by co-occurrence analysis. Importantly, transcriptional profiling of didemnin biosynthetic gene clusters indicates active in situ production of this compound within marine ecosystems. These findings enhance our understanding of Tistrella's ecology and secondary metabolite production in natural environments. Abstract: Neonicotinoids pose significant environmental risks due to their widespread use, persistence, and challenges in elimination. This study explores the effectiveness of Fe/Mn biochar in enhancing the removal efficiency of neonicotinoids in recirculating constructed wetlands (RCWs). Results demonstrated that incorporating Fe/Mn biochar into RCWs significantly improved the removal of COD, NH 4 + -N, TN, TP, imidacloprid (IMI), and acetamiprid (ACE). However, the simultaneous presence of IMI and ACE in the RCWs hindered the elimination of NH 4 + -N, TN, and TP from wastewater. The enhanced removal of nutrients and pollutants by Fe/Mn biochar was attributed to its promotion of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling in RCWs, along with its facilitation of the adsorption and biodegradation of IMI and ACE. Metagenomics analysis demonstrated that Fe/Mn biochar altered the structure and diversity of microbial communities in RCWs. A total of 17 biodegradation genes (BDGs) and two pesticide degradation genes (PDGs) were identified within RCWs, with Fe/Mn biochar significantly increasing the abundance of BDGs such as cytochrome P450. The potential host genera for these BDGs/PDGs were identified as Betaproteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Nitrospiraceae, Gemmatimonadetes, and Bacillus. 42. Surviving high temperatures: The crucial role of vesicular inhibitory amino acid transporter in Asian honeybee, Apis cerana.

Abstract: Asian honeybees (Apis cerana) play a crucial role as pollinators to service for the ecological stability. However, their proliferation and growth are significantly impacted by environmental temperature stress. This study delves into the function of the Apis cerana vesicular inhibitory amino acid transporter gene (AcVIAAT) in safeguarding Asian honeybees against high-temperature stress. The AcVIAAT gene exhibits positive responsiveness in honeybees subjected to varying thermal conditions by triggering the genes associated with oxidative stress. Molecular docking, co-immunoprecipitation, and ELISA verify the capacity of the AcVIAAT protein to interact with γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a key inhibitory neurotransmitter. Administering GABA to honeybees significantly improves their survival rate under high-temperature stress and also simultaneously upregulating oxidative stress-related genes. Therefore, these findings reveal that the AcVIAAT gene enhances the thermoregulatory capacity of honeybees by modulating oxidative stress-related genes through facilitating GABA transport. The characterization of six non-synonymous SNPs in the AcVIAAT gene among A.cerana populations distributed across both the northern and southern regions indicates a potential association between gene variation and environmental adaptation. Abstract: The synthetic phenolic antioxidant 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (2,4-DTBP) is an emergent contaminant and can disrupt the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems. This study aimed to investigate 2,4-DTBP-induced hepatotoxicity in common carp and the underlying mechanisms involved. Sixty common carp were divided into four groups and exposed to 0 mg/L, 0.01 mg/L, 0.1 mg/L or 1 mg/L 2,4-DTBP for 30 days. Here, we first demonstrated that 2,4-DTBP exposure caused liver damage, manifested as hepatocyte nuclear pyknosis, inflammatory cell infiltration and apoptosis. Moreover, 2,4-DTBP exposure induced hepatic reactive oxygen species (ROS) overload and disrupted antioxidant capacity, as indicated by the reduced activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). In addition, transmission electron microscopy revealed that 2,4-DTBP exposure induced autophagosome accumulation in the liver of common carp. Western blot analysis further revealed that 2,4-DTBP exposure significantly decreased the protein levels of mTOR and increased the LC3II/LC3I ratio. Furthermore, 2,4-DTBP exposure inhibited lysozyme (LZM) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activity; decreased immunoglobulin M (IgM), complement 3 (C3), and complement 4 (C4) levels in the serum; increased the mRNA levels of proinflammatory cytokines (NF-κB, TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6); and increased the mRNA levels of three types of proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) (α, β/δ and γ). Molecular docking revealed that 2,4-DTBP directly binds to the internal active pocket of PPARs. Abstract: Otolaryngology is an important specialty in the field of surgery that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of the ear, nose, throat, trachea, as well as related anatomical structures. Various otolaryngological disorders are difficult to treat using established pharmacological and surgical approaches. The advent of molecular and cellular therapies led to further progress in this respect. This article reviews the therapeutic strategies of using stem cells, immune cells, and chondrocytes in otorhinolaryngology. As the most widely recognized cell derivatives, exosomes were also systematically reviewed for their therapeutic potential in head and neck cancer, otitis media, and allergic rhinitis. Abstract: Chrysophanol and hesperidin are natural nutraceuticals that exhibit synergistic bioactivities, but their hydrophobicity limits their applications, and it is unclear whether coencapsulation can improve their solubility and release behaviors. The objective of this work was to coencapsulate chrysophanol and hesperidin by octenylsuccinated β-glucan aggregates (OSβG-Agg) and to reveal how coencapsulation improves their release and bioaccessibility. Mechanisms underlying the hypothesis of beneficial effects in coloading, corelease and bioaccessibility were revealed. The solubilization of OSβG-Agg was due to hydrogen-bonding among β-glucan moieties of OSβG and hydroxyl groups of chrysophanol and hesperidin and hydrophobic interactions among octenyl chains of OSβG and hydrophobic moieties of chrysophanol and hesperidin. Structural analyses confirmed the hypothesis that chrysophanol molecules were nearly embedded deeper into the interior of hydrophobic domains, and most of hesperidin molecules were incorporated into the exterior of the hydrophobic domains of OSβG-Agg due to the strength of these interactions, but they interacted in OSβG-Agg with a dense and compact structure rather than existing in isolation. The combined effects delayed their release and enhanced their bioaccessibility because of dynamic equilibrium between the favorable interactions and unfavorable structural erosion and relaxation of OSβG-Agg. Abstract: Anaerobic methane oxidation (AOM) can drive soil arsenate reduction, a process known as methane-dependent arsenate reduction (M-AsR), which is a critical driver of arsenic (As) release in soil. Low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs), an important component of rice root exudates, have an unclear influence and mechanism on the M-AsR process. To narrow this knowledge gap, three typical LMWOAs-citric acid, oxalic acid, and acetic acid-were selected and added to As-contaminated paddy soils, followed by the injection of 13 CH 4 and incubation under anaerobic conditions. The results showed that LMWOAs inhibited the M-AsR process and reduced the As(III) concentration in soil porewater by 35.1-65.7 % after 14 days of incubation. Among the LMWOAs, acetic acid exhibited the strongest inhibition, followed by oxalic and citric acid. Moreover, LMWOAs significantly altered the concentrations of ferrous iron and dissolved organic carbon in the soil porewater, consequently impacting the release of As in the soil. The results of qPCR and sequencing analysis indicated that LMWOAs inhibited the M-AsR process by simultaneously suppressing microbes associated with ANME-2d and arrA. 47. Changes in REVEAL Lite 2 risk status are associated with long-term outcomes in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension: a post-hoc analysis of the GRIPHON study.

Abstract: Background: Mortality risk assessment informs clinical management of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). The Registry to Evaluate Early and Long-Term PAH Disease Management (REVEAL) Lite 2 is a simplified risk calculator discriminating 1-year mortality risk., Methods: This post-hoc analysis of the phase 3 GRIPHON study assessed changes in REVEAL Lite 2 risk score with selexipag versus placebo, and whether changes were prognostic or predictive of time to first morbidity/mortality (M/M) event., Results: REVEAL Lite 2 risk category discriminated M/M risk (landmark concordance indices: 0.68-0.76, selexipag; 0.65-0.70, placebo). Across baseline risk categories, hazard ratios supported a lower risk of M/M events with selexipag versus placebo: low, 0.573 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.361-0.908; p = 0.0178); intermediate, 0.423 (95% CI 0.274-0.655; p = 0.0001); high, 0.711 (9% CI 0.520-0.972; p = 0.0326). Odds ratios for risk improvement were 2.0 (95% CI 1.50-2.65), 1.8 (95% CI 1.38-2.43), and 2.0 (95% CI 1.43-2.72) for selexipag versus placebo at 16, 26, and 52 weeks, respectively (all p < 0.001). REVEAL Lite 2 risk improvement at Week 16 explained 19.1% of the treatment effect in all patients and 47.0% in patients with REVEAL Lite 2 baseline risk score of ≥ 7., Conclusions: REVEAL Lite 2 can monitor PAH M/M risk and facilitate treatment optimization. 48. Polystyrene nanoplastics enhance poxvirus preference for migrasome-mediated transmission.

Abstract: Since the emergence of a global outbreak of mpox in 2022, understanding the transmission pathways and mechanisms of Orthopoxviruses, including vaccinia virus (VACV), has become paramount. Nanoplastic pollution has become a significant global issue due to its widespread presence in the environment and potential adverse effects on human health. These emerging pollutants pose substantial risks to both living organisms and the environment, raising serious health concerns related to their proliferation. Despite this, the effects of nanoparticles on viral transmission dynamics remain unclear. This study explores how polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) influence the transmission of VACV through migrasomes. We demonstrate that PS-NPs accelerate the formation of migrasomes early in the infection process, facilitating VACV entry as soon as 15 h post-infection (hpi), compared to the usual onset at 36 hpi. Immunofluorescence and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveal significant co-localization of VACV with migrasomes induced by PS-NPs by 15 hpi. This interaction coincides with an increase in lipid droplet size, attributed to higher cholesterol levels influenced by PS-NPs. By 36 hpi, migrasomes exposed to both PS-NPs and VACV exhibit distinct features, such as retraction fibers and larger lipid droplets, emphasizing their critical role in cargo transport during viral infections. 49. External electric field induced emission behavior for ESIPT-based 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-(pyren-1-yl)phenol towards near-infrared region.

Abstract: Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) for low energy transfer and double emission, but the current methods for regulating ESIPT processes are mostly solvent and substituent effects. Here, utilizing the density theory functional (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods, the ESIPT process controlled by an external electric field (EEF) is proposed, and the changes in photophysical properties of 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-4-(pyren-1-yl)phenol (PyHBT) are investigated. Structural parameter variations and IR vibrational spectra measure the prerequisite for the ESIPT process, namely, intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) strength, and the scanned potential energy curves (PECs) demonstrate that the ESIPT process of PyHBT is harder to execute as the positive EEF increases, and the opposite is true for the negative EEF. The absorption and fluorescence spectra show shifts under the distinct EEFs, and even the emission wavelength reaches the short-wave near-infrared (SW-NIR) region (780-1100 nm), such as 815.2 nm for a positive EEF of + 30 × 10 -4 a.u. in the keto form. Additionally, the fluorescence intensity of PyHBT is strongly influenced by the positive EEF, especially in the enol form, and the investigation of the mechanism by hole-electron analysis demonstrates that under the positive EEF, the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) process is induced, which triggers the weakening of the fluorescence intensity.
