Nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides, as the dominant toxic gases in the atmosphere, can induce severe human health problems under the composite pollutant conditions. Currently the effect of nitrogen or sulfur oxides in atmospheric environment to the degradation and cytotoxicity of triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) on atmospheric particle surfaces still remain poorly understood. Hence, laboratory simulation methods were used in this study to investigate the effect and related mechanism. First, particle samples were prepared with the TPhP coated on MnSO 4 , CuSO 4 , FeSO 4 and Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 surface. The results showed that, when nitrogen or sulfur oxides were present, more significant TPhP degradation on all samples can be observed under both light and dark conditions. The results proved nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides were the vital influence factors to the degradation of TPhP, which mainly promoted the OH generation in the polluted atmosphere. The mechanism study indicated that diphenyl hydrogen phosphate (DPhP) and OH-DPhP were two main stable degradation products. These degradation products originated from the phenoxy bond cleavage and hydroxylation of TPhP caused by hydroxyl radicals. In addition, no TPhP related organosulfates (OSs) or organic nitrates (ON) formation were observed. Regarding the cytotoxicity, all the particles can induce more significant cellular injury and apoptosis of A549 cells, which may be relevant to the adsorbed nitrogen oxides or sulfur oxides on particles surfaces. The superfluous reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was the possible reason of cytotoxicity. The bioavailability of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) plays a crucial role in determining the toxicity and risk of contaminants in the environment. However, the bioavailability of APIs in complex environmental matrices is still unclear. In this study, the combined effects of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS NPs) with various particle sizes (50, 100, and 1000 nm) and fulvic acid (FA) on the bioavailability of carbamazepine (CBZ) were investigated via negligible depletion solid-phase microextraction (nd-SPME) and Daphnia magna (D. magna) accumulation. The uptake kinetic study revealed that both PS NPs and FA reduced the elimination rate (k 2 ) in most cases. The availability of CBZ to nd-SPME was determined by the hydrodynamic particle size of PS NPs, whereas the bioavailability to D. magna depended on the intrinsic particle size. The CBZ bioavailability was greater in co-exposed matrices due to the attenuated sorption of PS NPs to CBZ by FA modification. Notably, co-exposure of PS NPs and FA resulted in a higher bioaccumulation factor (BAF) of CBZ, probably due to the desorption and reabsorption of particle-associated CBZ. The demand of lithium (Li) has increased rapidly in recent decades under carbon neutrality strategies, but the environmental fate and potential risks of Li in aquatic ecosystem are barely known. This study conducted a comprehensive field survey in the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) and the adjacent East China Sea (ECS), to investigate the spatial distribution of dissolved Li and bioaccumulation of Li in the coastal food web. The dissolved Li increased with salinity (from 7.39 to 189 μg L -1 ), controlled by the conservative mixing of Li-enriched seawater and Li-poor riverine water. Negative correlation was observed between Li content and stable nitrogen isotope in the coastal biota, indicating bio-diminish of Li in the food web. Furthermore, the Li contents in muscle tissues were significantly higher in bivalves (as filter-feeders; mean: 0.75 ± 0.41 μg g -1 ) than in fish (as predator; mean: 0.10 ± 0.05 μg g -1 ) and other biota species, indicating that dissolved uptake might be the major exposure pathway for Li. Importantly, it was noticed that the bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) in fish muscle varied greatly (from 0.17 to 5.82), showing lower BAFs for fish inhabiting in marine and benthic regions (with higher salinity and higher dissolved Li concentration). Such inhibition effects of salinity on Li bioaccumulation could not be explained by the modulation of salinity on Li speciation, but highly attributed to the inhibition of high salinity on the dissolved uptake of Li, which was associated with the co-transportation of Li and Na. Benzotriazole ultraviolet stabilizers (BUVSs) are widely used as industrial additives to protect products from photoaging and are present in a variety of environmental matrices and organisms. It raised significant concerns that BUVSs are emerging pollutants with persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity, of which 2-(3, 5-di-tert-amyl-2-hydroxyphenyl) benzotriazole (UV-328) has been recently listed in Annex A of the Stockholm Convention Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) list. A comprehensive understanding of the occurrence, partitioning and transformation of BUVSs in the environment is the basis for their environmental exposure and risk studies. However, the occurrence, partitioning and transformation of BUVSs are scarcely reviewed. In this paper, the environmental occurrence of BUVSs in various matrices, including water-suspended particulate matter and sediment, soil and dust, sludge, as well as biota, were summarized. Solid matrices and organisms are predominant reservoirs for BUVSs rather than waters, but there is a lack of systematical summary on the sorption/partitioning studies of BUVSs in abiotic phases and organisms. This paper analyzed and reviewed the possible sorption/partitioning processes and mechanisms. It was found that the partitioning is dependent on the hydrophobicity of BUVSs, environmental conditions and the organic carbon contents, and the bioaccumulation is also biota-species dependent. To further assess the potential risks of BUVSs, more progress has been made in the study of transformation of BUVSs. Focusing on the most important transformation processes in the environment, involving photodegradation, chemical degradation, biodegradation and metabolism in biota, the probable transformation pathways and mechanisms of BUVSs were summarized. It was emphasized that the hydrophobicity and toxicity of metabolites should not be overlooked. Finally, the future research direction was prospected from contaminant remediation and health risk perspectives. Triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) and transition metal elements have been ubiquitously detected in the atmosphere, which can participate in atmospheric chemical reactions and induce damage to human health. Currently the understanding of TPhP degradation, transformation and cytotoxicity on atmospheric particles surface are still limited. Therefore, this study used laboratory simulation methods to investigate the influence of irradiation time, transition metal salts, relative humidity (RH) to TPhP degradation, transformation and relative cytotoxicity. TPhP was coated on particle surfaces of four transition metal salts (MnSO 4 , CuSO 4 , FeSO 4 and Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ) in the experiment. Within 12 h irradiation, the significant TPhP photodegradation can be observed on all particles surface. Among these influence factors, the irradiation and RH were the crucial aspects to TPhP degradation, which primarily affect the OH concentration in the atmosphere. The transition metal elements only exhibited slightly catalytic effect to TPhP degradation. The mechanism study indicated that the major degradation products of TPhP are diphenyl hydrogen phosphate (DPhP) and OH-DPhP, which originated from the phenoxy bond cleavage and hydroxylation of TPhP induced by OH. As for the cytotoxicity to A549 cells, all the transition metal particles coated with TPhP can cause cellular injury, which was chiefly induced by the transition metal salt. The possible cytotoxicity mechanism of these particles to A549 cells can be attributed to the excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Volatile methylsiloxanes (VMSs) earned serious concerns due to their detection and toxicities after their release to the environments. They were also detected in rivers around the globe, but their distribution remained to be explored in larger rivers with longer length, higher water volume and wider watershed. In the present study, 8 cyclic VMSs (cVMSs) and 7 linear ones (lVMSs) were investigated in 42 water samples (27 surface water (including 7 drinking source water) and 15 wastewater) from the Yangtze River Basin, China. Results showed that VMSs were detected in all sampling sites. In surface water, the concentrations of total cVMSs ranged from 17.3 to 4.57 × 10 3  ng/L, while those of lVMSs ranged from 1.72 to 81.6 ng/L. In wastewater, the total concentrations of cVMSs and lVMSs showed ranges of 17.6-1.66 × 10 3  ng/L and 2.59-252 ng/L, respectively. Apparently, cVMSs showed significantly higher concentrations than lVMSs. The concentrations of cVMSs followed an order of lower > upper > middle reaches, while those of lVMSs did not show clear distribution patterns. Among cVMSs, those with less Si numbers were dominant, while those with more Si numbers were dominant in lVMSs. Notably, the VMSs were also detected in 7 surface waters that served as drinking source waters, which earned them further concerns. The interaction between pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) with dissolved organic matter (DOM) can alter their bioavailability and toxicity. Nevertheless, little is known about how pH and DOM work together to affect the availability of PPCPs. This study investigated the impact of pH and DOM on the availability of seven PPCPs, namely Carbamazepine, Estrone, Bisphenol A, Testosterone Propionate, Triclocarban, 4-tert-Octylphenol and 4-n-Nonylphenol, using negligible depletion solid-phase microextraction (nd-SPME). The uptake kinetics of PPCPs by the nd-SPME fibers increased proportionally with DOM concentrations, likely due to enhanced diffusive conductivity in the unstirred water layer. At neutral pH, the partitioning coefficients of PPCPs for Humic Acid (log K DOC 3.87-5.25) were marginally higher than those for Fulvic Acid (log K DOC 3.64-5.11). Also, the log K DOC values correlated linearly with the log D OW (pH 7.0) values of PPCPs, indicating a predominant role for hydrophobic interactions in the binding of DOM and PPCPs. Additionally, specific interactions like hydrogen bonding, π-π, and electrostatic interactions occur for certain compounds, influenced by the polarity and spatial conformation of the compounds. For these ionizable PPCPs, the log D DOC values exhibit a strong dependence on pH due to the dual influence of pH on both DOM and PPCPs. The log D DOC values rose from pH 1.0 to 3.0, peaked at pH 5.0 to 9.0, and then (sharply) declined from 11.0 to 13.0. The reasons are that in strong acidic circumstances, the coiled and compressed shape of DOM inhibits the hydrophobic interaction, whereas in strong alkaline conditions, significant electrostatic repulsion reduces the sorption. Artificial sweeteners (ASs) entered the environments after application and emissions. Recent studies showed that some ASs had obesogenic risks. However, it remained unclear whether such risks are common and how they provoke such effects. Presently, the effects of 8 widely used ASs on lipid accumulation were measured in Caenorhabditis elegans. Potential mechanisms were explored with feeding and locomotion behavior, lipid metabolism and neural regulation. Results showed that acesulfame (ACE), aspartame (ASP), saccharin sodium (SOD), sucralose (SUC) and cyclamate (CYC) stimulated lipid accumulation at μg/L levels, showing obesogenic potentials. Behavior investigation showed that ACE, ASP, SOD, SUC and CYC biased more feeding in the energy intake aspect against the locomotion in the energy consumption one. Neotame (NEO), saccharin (SAC) and alitame (ALT) reduced the lipid accumulation without significant obesogenic potentials in the present study. However, all 8 ASs commonly disturbed enzymes (e.g., acetyl-CoA carboxylase) in lipogenesis and those (e.g., carnitine palmitoyl transferase) in lipolysis. In addition, ASs disturbed PPARγ (via expressions of nhr-49), TGF-β/DAF-7 (daf-7) and SREBP (sbp-1) pathways. Moreover, they also interfered neurotransmitters including serotonin (5-HT), dopamine (DA) and acetylcholine (ACh), with influences in Gsα (e.g., via expressions of gsα-1, ser-7), glutamate (e.g., mgl-1), and cGMP-dependent signaling pathways (e.g., egl-4). In summary, environmental ASs commonly disturbed neural regulation connecting behavior and lipid metabolism, and 5 out of 8 showed clear obesogenic potentials. Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a category of high-concerned emerging contaminants which are suspected to correlate with various human adverse health outcomes including tumors. It is also a question whether short-chain PFASs are qualified alternatives under the regulation of long-chain PFASs. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) culture system based on Gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) hydrogel matrix was used to investigate the impacts of 120-h perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) exposure of MDA-MB-231 cells. The results showed that PFOA exposure promoted the proliferation, migration, and invasion of MDA-MB-231 cells in an environmentally relevant concentration range (0.1 to 10 μM), exhibiting a clear malignant-promoting risk. In contrast, PFBA only showed a trend to induce non-invasive cell migration. Hippo/YAP signaling pathway was identified as the contributor to the differences between the two PFASs. PFOA but PFBA reduced YAP phosphorylation and increased the nuclear content of YAP, which further facilitated abundant key factors of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process. Our results provided a new idea for the carcinogenicity of PFOA using a 3D-based paradigm. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) exposure correlated with various cancers and their mortality. Its persistence in the environment made its long-term multigenerational influences of significant concerns. However, it remained unanswered whether its multigenerational exposure could influence metastasis which contributes ~90 % to cancer mortality. In the present study, long-term effects of PFOA were measured in Drosophila melanogaster over 3 consecutive generations. In the morning-eclosed (AM) adult flies, PFOA significantly promoted tumor invasion rates and distances which increased over generations. Regarding metabolic reprogramming, PFOA disturbed the expressions of Glut1 and Pdk1, activities and contents of FASN1 (fatty acid synthase), ACC (acetyl-CoA carboxylase) and SREBP1 (sterol regulatory element binding protein). Regarding antioxidant responses, PFOA exposure generated provoked oxidative stress via H 2 O 2 and stimulated antioxidants including glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), melatonin, serotonin and cortisol, with downregulations on PI3K/AKT pathways and upregulations on MAPK ones. The biochemical and molecular effects altered over generations. In the afternoon-eclosed (PM) adult flies, the metastasis of PFOA was more deteriorated than in AM adults. The significant influences of dysrhythmia were also observed in the multigenerational effects of PFOA on the metabolism reprogramming and antioxidant responses. The effects on rhythm-regulating gene expressions and protein levels explained the dysrhythmia and also indicated close interactions among metabolism reprogramming, antioxidant responses and rhythm regulation. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Numerous emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are being detected. Meanwhile, the toxicities of the emerging PFASs still depend on the progress of legacy PFASs for the continuity of scientific studies. Emamectin benzoate (EMB) is an efficient insecticide which widely used as an anthelmintic drug additive in aquaculture fish. However, its extensive use has resulted in widespread pollution in the aquatic environment. Previous studies have identified the potential developmental and neurotoxic effects of EMB, however, systematic studies pertaining to the cardiovascular toxic effects of EMB on fish are scarce. In this study, zebrafish embryos were exposed to EMB at concentrations of 0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 mg/L for 3 days, aiming to investigate the cardiovascular toxic effects of EMB via examining morphology, cardiac function, and vascular development phenotypes. It revealed that EMB exposure led to marked deteriorated effects, including adverse effects on mortality, hatching rate, and general morphological traits, such as malformation, heart rate, body length, and eye area, in zebrafish embryos/larvae. Furthermore, EMB exposure resulted in abnormal cardiac function and vascular development, triggering neutrophil migration and aggregation toward the pericardial and dorsal vascular regions, and finalized apoptosis in the zebrafish heart region, these phenomena were further deciperred by the transcriptome analysis that the Toll-like receptor pathway, P53 pathway, and apoptotic pathway were significantly affected by EMB exposure. Moreover, the molecular docking and aspirin anti-inflammatory rescue assays indicated that TLR2 and TLR4 might be the potential targets of EMB. Taken together, our study provides preliminary evidence that EMB may induce apoptosis by affecting inflammatory signaling pathways and eventually lead to abnormal cardiovascular development in zebrafish. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are organic pollutants widely detected in various environmental media due to their high persistence and bioaccumulation. PBDE-induced visual impairment and neurotoxicity were previously demonstrated using zebrafish (Danio rerio) models, and recent research reported the phenotypic depigmentation effect of PBDEs at high concentrations on zebrafish, but whether those effects are still present at environment-relevant levels is still unclear. Herein, we performed both phenotypic examination and mechanism investigation in zebrafish embryos (48 hpf) and larvae (5 dpf) about their pigmentation status when exposing to PBDE congener BDE-47 (2,2',4,4'-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether) at levels from 0.25 to 25 μg/L. Results showed that low-level BDE-47 can restrain the relative melanin abundance of zebrafish larvae to 70.47% (p < 0.05) and 61.54% (p < 0.01) respectively under 2.5 and 25 μg/L BDE-47 compared with control, and the thickness of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) remarkably reduced from 571.4 nm to 350.3 nm (p < 0.001) under 25 μg/L BDE-47 exposure. We also observed disrupted expressions of melanin synthesis genes and disorganized mitfa differentiation patterns based on Tg(mifta:EGFP), as well as visual impairment resulting from thinner RPE. Considering both processes of visual development and melanin synthesis are highly sensitive to ambient light conditions, we prolonged the light regime of maintaining zebrafish larvae from 14 hours light versus 10 hours dark (14L:10D) to 18 hours light versus 6 hours dark (18L:6D). Lengthening photoperiod successfully rescued the fluorescent level of mitfa in zebrafish epidermis and most gene expressions associated with melanin synthesis under 25 μg/L BDE-47 exposure to the normal level. A comprehensive investigation was conducted to explore the distributions of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in sediments and porewater along a typical transect from the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) to the East China Sea (ECS) open shelf. THg concentrations in the surface sediments exhibited large variations across sites, higher in the estuary mixing region, especially within the turbidity maximum zone (TMZ). The spatial and vertical distributions (0-20 cm) of THg in sediments were highly controlled by sediment grain size and total organic carbon (TOC), due to the strong binding between Hg and fine-grained sediments that enriched with organic matter. In contrast, MeHg concentrations in surface sediments were higher in the estuary mixing region and the ECS open shelf than in the river channel, with remarkably higher MeHg/THg ratios in sediments and porewater at the open shelf sites, identified as the regional hotspots of the net in situ MeHg production. Considering the large gradients of physiochemical properties of sediments, porewater and the overlying water, the results of this study suggested that the higher net Hg methylation potential in the open shelf region was largely attributed to the lower acid volatile sulfide, lower TOC and higher salinity, which facilitated the partitioning of inorganic Hg into porewater that highly bioavailable for Hg-methylation bacteria. Nanoplastics (NPs) and microplastics (MPs) could act as potential carriers for pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and alter the bioavailability in the aquatic environment. The effects of NPs and MPs of polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE) on the availability of five PPCPs including carbamazepine, bisphenol A, estrone, triclocarban and 4-tert-octylphenol were investigated by negligible depletion solid- phase microextraction (nd-SPME). The freely dissolved concentrations of PPCPs decreased with the increasing concentrations of NPs/MPs. The overall order of the sorption coefficients (logK NP / logK MP ) of PPCPs was as follows: 100 nm PS > 50 nm PS > 1 µm PS > 100 µm PS > 100 µm PE. Sorption of PPCPs by NPs was generally 1-2 orders of magnitude stronger than to MPs. The log K NP / log K MP values (3.16-5.21) increased with the log K OW (2.45-5.28) of PPCPs, however, linear correlation was only observed between log K MP and log K OW . Photo-Fenton technology integrated by photocatalysis and Fenton reaction is a favorable strategy for water remediation. Nevertheless, the development of visible-light-assisted efficient and recyclable photo-Fenton catalysts still faces challenges. This study successfully constructed a novel separable Z-scheme P-g-C 3 N 4 /Fe 3 O 4 QDs/BiOI (PCN/FOQDs/BOI) heterojunction via in-situ deposition method. The results showed that the photo-Fenton degradation efficiency for tetracycline over optimal ternary catalyst reached 96.5% within 40 min at visible illumination, which was 7.1 and 9.6 times higher than its single photocatalysis and Fenton system, respectively. Moreover, PCN/FOQDs/BOI possessed excellent photo-Fenton antibacterial activity, which could completely inactivate 10 8 CFU·mL -1 of E. coli and S. aureus within 20 and 40 min, respectively. Theoretical calculation and in-situ characterization revealed that the enhanced catalysis behavior resulted from the FOQDs mediated Z-scheme electronic system, which not only facilitated photocreated carrier separation of PCN and BOI while maintaining maximum redox capacity, but also accelerated H 2 O 2 activation and Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle, thus synergistically forming more active species in system. Additionally, PCN/FOQDs/BOI/Vis/H 2 O 2 system displayed extensive adaptability at pH range of 3-11, removal universality for various organic pollutants and attractive magnetic separation property. The toxicological and pathological influences of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) on the animal central nervous system have attracted worldwide attention. However, their mechanism of action has not been completely elucidated. Given that retinoic acid (RA) and thyroid hormone (TH) signaling pathway are closely related to neurodevelopment, the crosstalk between the two signaling pathways at the levels of metabolite conversion, gene expression and ligand-receptor interaction after exposure to two representative PBDE congeners (BDE-47 and BDE-209) using zebrafish larvae, dual reporter gene assay, and docking simulation was studied. Our results clarified that BDE-47 could disrupt the transport and metabolism of retinoids, induce changes in expression of key genes, bind with the seven nuclear receptors, and activate RA signaling pathway. BDE-47 exhibited more effects on the indicators of the two signaling pathways than BDE-209. Furthermore, BDE-47 may disrupt TH signaling pathway by disrupting RA signaling pathway, indicating that RA signal is priorly influenced than TH signal. This study conducted a comprehensive investigation on the distribution and bioavailability of heavy metals (Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) in sediments along two typical transects from Yangtze River to the East China Sea continental shelf that spanning large physicochemical gradients. Heavy metals were mainly associated with the fine-grained sediments (enriched with organic matter), exhibiting decreasing trends from nearshore to offshore sites. The turbidity maximum zone showed the highest metal concentrations, which evaluated as polluted for some tested metals (especially Cd) using the geo-accumulation index. Based on the modified BCR procedure, the non-residual fractions of Cu, Zn and Pb were higher within the turbidity maximum zone, and significantly negatively correlated with bottom water salinity. The DGT-labile metals all positively correlated with the acid-soluble metal fraction (especially for Cd, Zn and Cr), and negatively correlated with salinity (except Co). Therefore, our results suggest salinity as the key factor controlling metal bioavailability, which could further modulate metal diffusive fluxes at the sediment-water interface. The environmental occurrences of bisphenol analogues (BPs) have been extensively reported, whereas their concentration profile, spatial distribution, and temporal trend in e-waste dismantling area are still poorly understood. Herein, typical BPs (BPA, BPS, TBBPA, TBBPA-DHEE, and TBBPA-MHEE) were investigated in water, soil, and biological samples from three representative regions (FJT, JJP, and RIB) in e-waste recycling area in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province. Overall, the detection frequency of BPs in all samples was 100 %, confirming widespread presence of BPs in e-waste recycling area. Wherein, BPA was the predominant BPs in water (33.3 %) and soil samples (34.9 %), but TBBPA accounted for the largest proportion (41.3 %) in biological samples. In addition, the concentration of BPs in FJT was lower than that in JJP and RIB owing to the renovations on FJT by the local government in recent years, whereas the higher BPs level in RIB implied that elevated BPs contents was related to massive e-waste dismantling activities. From 2017 to 2021, a decreased trend of BPs concentration was observed in FJT, but aggravation of BPs levels in RIB was caused by the ongoing e-waste dismantling. The risk assessment revealed that the BPs in e-waste recycling area posed a low ecological and human health risk. Environmental antibiotics raise serious health concerns due to their contribution to the obesity prevalence. Moreover, antibiotics promote antibiotic-resistance bacteria (ARB) which represent another emerging pollutant. However, the interaction between antibiotic and ARB in the obesogenic effects remained unexplored. In the present study, the obesogenic effects of tetracycline antibiotic (TCH) and ARB containing tetA were studied on C. elegans, and E. coli OP50 (OP50) was referred as a normal bacterial food. Results showed that TCH stimulated nematode triglyceride contents, while ARB alone had no significant influences. The combination of TCH and ARB showed less obesogenic effects than TCH alone, showing antagonism. Biochemical assays showed that the combination of TCH and ARB showed similar effects to ARB alone, and had less increases in lipid metabolism enzymes or metabolites than those of TCH or ARB alone, supporting the antagonism. In the nontargeted metabolomic analysis, TCH with ARB showed less significantly changed metabolites (SCMs) in the nematodes than TCH or ARB alone, partially explaining the antagonism. The metabolomic results also pointed out the significant involvement of amino acids, the carboxylic acids and derivatives, and also the benzene and substituted derivatives in the obesogenic effects of TCH and ARB. Human diseases and health concerns caused by environmental pollutants are globally emerging. Therefore, rapid and efficient evaluation of the effects of environmental pollutants on human health is essential. Due to the significant differences between humans and animals and the lack of physiologically related environments, animal models and two-dimensional (2D) culture cannot accurately describe toxicological effects and predict actual in vivo responses. To make up for the limitations of traditional environmental toxicology screening, three-dimensional (3D) culture has been developed. The 3D culture could provide a good organizational structure comparable to the complex internal environment of humans and produce a more realistic response to environmental pollutants, which has been used in drug development, toxicity evaluation, personalized therapy and biological mechanism research. The goal of environmental toxicology is to provide clues and support for the risk assessment and management of environmental pollutants. With the development of 3D culture that can reproduce specific physiological aspects loaded with specific cells that reflect human biology, interactions between pollutants and target tissues and organs can be explored to assess the acute and chronic adverse health effects of exposure to various environmental toxins. The 3D culture with great potential shows broad prospects in toxicology research and is expected to bridge the gap between 2D culture and animal models eventually. Gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) with luminescence property are emerging as promising candidates in fluorescent methods for monitoring contaminants, but low luminescence efficiency hampers their extensive applications. Herein, GSH-Au NCs@ZIF-8 was designed by encapsulating GSH-Au NCs with AIE effect into metal-organic frameworks, achieving high luminescence efficiency and good stability through the confinement effect of ZIF-8. Accordingly, a fluorescent sensing platform was constructed for the sensitive detection of copper ions (Cu 2+ ) and organophosphorus pesticides (OPs). Firstly, the as-prepared GSH-Au NCs@ZIF-8 could strongly accumulate Cu 2+ due to the adsorption property of MOFs, accompanied by a significant fluorescence quenching effect with a low detection limit of 0.016 μM for Cu 2+ . Besides, thiocholine (Tch), the hydrolysis product of acetylthiocholine (ATch) by acetylcholinesterase (AchE), could coordinate with Cu 2+ by sulfhydryl groups (-SH), leading to a significant fluorescence recovery, which was further used for the quantification of OPs owing to its inhibition to AChE activity. Furthermore, a hydrogel sensor was explored to accomplish equipment-free, visual, and quantitative monitoring of Cu 2+ and OPs by a smartphone sensing platform. Metastasis includes tumor invasion and migration and underlies over 90% of cancer mortality. The metastatic effects of environmental carcinogens raised serious health concerns. However, the underlying mechanisms remained poorly studied. In the present study, an in vivo Ras V12 /lgl -/- model of the fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster, with an 8-day exposure was employed to explore the metastatic effects of 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB126), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and cadmium chloride (CdCl 2 ). At 1.0 mg/L, PCB126, PFOA, and CdCl 2 significantly increased tumor invasion rates by 1.32-, 1.33-, and 1.29-fold of the control, respectively. They also decreased the larval body weight and locomotion behavior. Moreover, they commonly disturbed the expression levels of target genes in MAPK and UPR pathways, and their metastatic effects were significantly abolished by the addition of p38 inhibitor (SB203580), JNK inhibitor (SP600125) and IRE1 inhibitor (KIRA6). Notably, the addition of the IRE inhibitor significantly influenced sna/E-cad pathway which is essential in both p38 and JNK regulations. Carbamazepine (CBZ) in the aquatic environment is recognized as a potential threat to aquatic organisms and public health. However, the response of organism intestinal health, resistome, microbiota, and their relationship after CBZ exposure has been rarely reported. This study aimed to explore the impacts of CBZ on gut microbiota, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the expression of intestinal health related genes as well as their interaction using the zebrafish model. 16 S ribosomal RNA sequencing indicated CBZ altered the composition of gut microbiota. Using high-throughput quantitative polymerase chain reaction (HT-qPCR), we found the number and abundance of ARGs were impacted by CBZ levels and exposure duration. We also observed the upregulated expression of the pro-inflammatory gene IL6 and downregulated expression of toll-like receptor gene TLR2 and intestinal barrier gene TJP2a at different exposure times. Correlation analyses revealed that Geobacillus, Rhodococcus, Ralstonia, Delftia, Luteolibacter and Escherichia-Shigella might be the main bacterial genera carrying ARGs. Meanwhile, Cetobacterium and Aeromonas could be the dominant bacteria affecting intestinal health related genes. The present study conducted a comprehensive field investigation on the transport and bioaccumulation of six trace metals (Cr, Cd, Pb, Mn, Ni, Cu) along a transect from Changjiang (Yangtze River) to the East China Sea continental shelf, which exhibited large variations in physiochemical properties (salinity, turbidity, pH, chlorophyll a, total nitrogen, dissolved oxygen, dissolved and particulate organic matter). From riverine sites to marine sites, dissolved Cr and Cd significantly increased, dissolved Pb and Mn showed less variations, while dissolved Cu and Ni showed complex spatial distribution patterns. Particulate trace metals (for Cr, Mn, Ni and Cu) were significantly negatively correlated with salinity. As a result, partition coefficients of trace metals (except Pb) were all significantly negatively correlated with salinity, indicating high salinity facilitated desorption/dissolution of metals from particulate phase. Additionally, the Changjiang derived particulate Pb, Mn, Ni and Cu sharply decreased (particularly for Mn) at the downstream of turbidity maximum zone, suggesting the efficient trapping of metals within this region. We further investigated the site-specific bioaccumulation of trace metals in size-fractionated zooplankton. Metal contents in macro-zooplankton were lower than micro- and meso-zooplankton owing to size-dependent zooplankton communities, while site-specific metal bioaccumulation mainly driven by site-specific zooplankton communities and salinity. The bioaccumulation factors of metals (Cr, Cd, Ni and Cu) were significantly negatively correlated with salinity, indicating high salinity hampered metal uptake which might attribute to competition of cations and formation of less bioavailable inorganic complexes with anions. Overall, high salinity generated two-sided effects (elevated dissolved metal concentrations Vs. reduced metal bioaccumulation) on metal contents in zooplankton (especially for Cr, Cd, Ni, and Cu), resulting in metal- and site-specific metal contents. This study investigated the contents of total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) and selenium (Se) in 22 fish species and 10 invertebrate species from the coastal East China Sea. The THg and MeHg contents were significantly higher in benthic fishes. Both Hg and Se biomagnified in the food webs, with evidences of associations during trophic transfer. In addition, Se:Hg molar ratio and Se health benefit value (HBV Se ) were used as novel criteria for Hg exposure risk assessments, showing that Se presented in molar excess of Hg in all samples, which would negate the risks of Hg toxicity. HBV Se provided more informative results than Se:Hg molar ratio, pointing to possibly lower health risks for some fishes containing high levels of Hg and Se. Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) are crucial constitution of fine particulate matter (PM), which are mainly derived from photochemical oxidation products of primary organic matter and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and can induce terrible impacts to human health, air quality and climate change. As we know, organosulfates (OSs) and organic nitrates (ON) are important contributors for SOA formation, which could be possibly produced through various pathways, resulting in extremely complex formation mechanism of SOA. Although plenty of research has been focused on the origins, spatial distribution and formation mechanisms of SOA, a comprehensive and systematic understanding of SOA formation in the atmosphere remains to be detailed explored, especially the most important OSs and ON dedications. Thus, in this review, we systematically summarize the recent research about origins and formation mechanisms of OSs and ON, and especially focus on their contribution to SOA, so as to have a clearer understanding of the origin, spatial distribution and formation principle of SOA. Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) have been ubiquitously detected in dust and air which could cause damage to human health through inhalation. Currently the understanding of their adverse effects and potential mechanisms on the lung are still limited. In this study, human non-small cell lung cancer cell line NCI-H1975 was used to investigate the cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, cellular apoptosis of 9 typical OPFRs with concentrations varied from 0 to 200 μM, and their toxic mechanism associated with molecular structure was compared. After 72 h, tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) displayed the highest cytotoxicity, followed by 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP), tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP) and tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP), while tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP) exhibited the least suppression on cell viability. These results indicated that the variation of cytotoxicity on OPFRs could only be partially explained by their ester linkage. Moreover, the overexpression of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), free Ca 2+ and cellular apoptosis suggested that exposure to OPFRs can lead to apoptosis related to oxidative stress. Six genes associated with oxidative stress and apoptosis were upregulated dramatically compared with the control, demonstrating OPFRs induced Chop/Caspase 3-related apoptosis by activating Sod1/p53/Map3k6/Fkbp5 expression in NCI-H1975 cells. Safe drinking water is crucial to public health. However, approximately one-third of the world's population lacks access to clean drinking water. The presence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in drinking water sources has become a severe problem worldwide due to its potential threat to human health. We monitored the occurrence and variations of 23 antibiotics and 9 ARGs in different treatment processes in a constructed wetland serving as drinking water source in the Yangtze River Delta, China. The studied wetland is consisted of four treatment processes: pretreatment area, pump station lifting, root-channel ecological purification area and deep purification area. Except for sulfapyridine and roxithromycin, 21 antibiotics were detected at concentrations ranging from 0.15 to 59.52 ng/L. The concentration of macrolides was the highest in this wetland, especially tylosin (42.86-59.52 ng/L). TetG, tetX and sul2 were the dominant ARGs in both water (2.41 × 10 -4 -1.87 × 10 -2 ) and sediment (6.65 × 10 -5 -4.92 × 10 -3 ). In addition, a strong correlation between ARGs in water and ARGs in sediment (Pearson, R 2  > 0.9, p < 0.05) indicated an exchange between the two phases. Moreover, the significantly positive correlation of ARGs between the inlet and outlet of each subsystem illustrated that upstream pollution was the primary source for downstream processes. In general, the wetland system could efficiently eliminate antibiotics (9.0-53.8%) and ARGs (14.5-94.1%), with the deep purification area having the highest removal efficiency. In past studies, the health and ecological risks of PCBs are well established. The impact of low-dose PCBs on aquatic ecosystems for an extended period is a matter of concern in the current era. The application of fatty acids (FAs) as bioindicators of pollution in the freshwater food web is almost unavailable. This study investigated concentrations of 209 PCB congeners, stable isotope levels, and FAs composition in ten freshwater species of Dongtinghu Lake, China. Total PCB congeners (∑PCBs) concentrations were ranged from 4.17 to 38.35 ng/g lipid weight. A total of 84 PCB congeners were detected out of 209 target PCB congeners, particularly PCB101, 118, 138, 153, and 155 found in all samples. The concentrations of 24 PCB congeners increased with trophic levels, but PCB 155 concentrations were consistent throughout trophic levels. The toxic equivalents (TEQ) of dl-PCBs (mostly PCB 126 and 169) also increased with trophic levels Out of total 35 FAs, 21 FAs were significantly positively correlated with 43 PCB congeners. Among FAs, C16:0 was the most abundant and positively correlated with most PCB compounds. The environmental implications of antimicrobial resistance arising from food animal farm practice are still a knowledge gap. This study investigates the fate and transport of antimicrobial resistance genes related to the use of antibiotics on a dairy farm in Michigan. Manure, soil, animal feed, animal drinking water, surface and groundwater samples were taken and the abundance of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were subsequently measured using high parallel quantitative PCR targeting 136 genes. The total abundance and detected numbers of ARGs were found to be highest in the stagnant lagoon. Up to 44 ARG subtypes with high abundance were found in drinking water in pen which was very close to those in manure compost. The ARGs pattern clustered by soil depth although they were treated by different manure. ARGs and MGEs were detected in surface and groundwater surrounded by dairy farmlands, with the occurrence of carbapenemase-encoding KPC gene in two waters, which may be due to transport of ARGs through runoff or other sources. Enchytraeus bulbosus is listed in the ISO and OECD standard guidelines as a possible test species of enchytraeid. However, in contrast to other listed species, its applicability in ecotoxicological studies as well as its sensitivity is widely unknown. Therefore, copper, pentachlorophenol(PCP), carbendazim, and chloroacetamide have been investigated by performing two-generation studies with multiple endpoints. Comparable toxicity trends to the existing studies were shown for copper and PCP in the two-generation studies of E. bulbosus. Dose-related abnormal swelling of clitella were found for the first time with PCP and chloroacetamide treatments. Sensitivity comparisons of E. bulbosus to other terrestrial test species were also conducted. E. bulbosus showed high sensitivity, it has comparable sensitivity as other sensitive species of genus Enchytraeus ( E. albidus or E. luxuriosus)to different chemicals, and was more sensitive than E. crypticus and earthworm species ( Eisenia fetida or Eisenia andrei). Combined with the phylogenetic and biological characterization, the results lead to the conclusion that E.bulbosus is a suitable model species in ecotoxicology and the chemical risk assessment (especially in multi-generation) because it has a short generation time, comparatively moderate fecundity, ideal and reasonable sensitivity., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. The consumption of pharmaceuticals-contaminated aquatic products could pose risks to human health, and risk assessments considering bioaccessibility can provide better dietary recommendations. In this study, the bioaccessibility of 6 pharmaceuticals (sulfadiazine (SD), sulfapyridine (SPD), roxithromycin (ROX), tylosin (TYL), diclofenac (DIC) and carbamazepine (CMZP)) in several fish species collected from Shanghai markets was evaluated using in vitro simulated digestion. The total mixed pharmaceuticals concentration in freshwater fish were lower than those in marine fish, and statistics showed that the total concentrations of SD, SPD and CMZP in freshwater fish were significantly lower than those of marine fish (p < 0.05). The bioaccessible concentration of each pharmaceutical accounted for 26.3% (TYL) to 101.5% (CMZP) of the total concentration in market fish (n = 70). The bioaccessibility of 6 pharmaceuticals in species of fish was 18.8% (cutlassfish) to 99.6% (bream), which may be related to the physical-chemical properties of the pharmaceutical and the characteristics of the matrix (e.g. lipid content). According to health risk assessments, the consumption of market fish in Shanghai posed no remarkable risk to human health (hazard quotient < 0.099). Antibiotics are gaining attention due to their roles as emerging pollutants and environmental obesogens, yet several aspects between their environmental exposure and obesogenic influence on organisms remain poorly explored. Here, Drosophila melanogaster were exposed to erythromycin (ERY, 0.1 μg/L) for three consecutive generations (F1 to F3). Body weight, circadian rhythm (represented by eclosion timing) and lipid metabolism were measured. ERY increased the size of lipid droplets in larvae of all three generations. It modestly inhibited body weight in adults that abnormally eclosed in the morning (AM adults) in the F1 and F2 generations, and the inhibition was less in adults that eclosed in the afternoon (PM adults). In contrast, it stimulated body weight in F3 adults. Notably, ERY promoted morning eclosion of females. Combining the effects from F1 to F3, acyl-CoA oxidase (ACO) was commonly increased in AM female and male adults and also in PM female ones, while it was commonly decreased in PM male adults. Glucokinase (GCK) was commonly increased in both sexes of AM adults but decreased in PM male adults across generations. The IIS pathway showed a common up-regulation in the AM adults despite some differences between sexes, but it did not show any shared changes in the PM adults with dysrhythmia. The AMPK pathway was involved across generations without particular shared changes. N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is one of the emerging nitrogenous disinfection by-products (DBPs) with probable cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and carcinogenesis. Its potential toxicological effects have drawn considerable attention but remain inadequately known. Here two methods, including developmental toxicity evaluation and neurobehavioral toxicity evaluation, were used and compared to investigate the safety of low-dose (0, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 μg/L) NDMA exposure to embryo-larval stage of zebrafish. Results showed that the survival and malformation rate of larvae at 6-day post fertilization (dpf) and the hatching rates at 48-h post fertilization (hpf) and 72 hpf in treatment groups had no significant difference with the control group, indicating that the tested NDMA doses were not developmentally toxic. Differently, the changes of neurobehavioral indicators performed more sensitivity. For example, 100 μg/L NDMA exposure induced locomotor hyperactivity at 7 dpf and induced an increasing effect on the relative path angle value. Further, relative value of path angle had more consistency with locomotion results compared with absolute value, indicating that relative value of path angle may be more suitable for the safety evaluation of low-dose NDMA exposure. Constructing metal-oxo-bridge coordination as electron transfer bridge is benefit for the catalysis acceleration towards water pollutants treatment. In this work, regulable Cu-O-C configuration was constructed through tunable ratio of copper aluminum oxide (CuAl x O y ) and porous g-C 3 N 4 (p-CN), employed as electron transfer bridge for Cu (II) /Cu (I) redox behavior modulation to realize sufficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. A series of characterization demonstrated that the composites presents porous structure for p-CN contribution, and the oxygen content plays crucial role in Cu-O-C bonds fabrication. The proper ratio of CuAl x O y and p-CN is conducive to create an oxygen-rich environment, resulting in high dispersed copper atoms connect with oxygen in p-CN matrix. As a result, 2:1 CuAl@p-CN possesses appropriate Cu-O-C configuration, has favorable electron transfer environment for rapid redox behavior of Cu (II) /Cu (I) , leading to excellent PMS activation for mirco-polluted veterinary antibiotics elimination. The activated PMS produced active species and followed the priority order of 1 O 2 > SO 4 • - > •OH for contaminants degradation, and the specific porous structure reduce the migration distance of active species for efficient catalysis. Sulfate radical (SO 4 ·- )-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) attract increasing attention in the control of micropollutants. However, SO 4 ·- can react with other chemicals present in water and result in undesired oxidation by-products (OBPs) generation. The formation and degradation mechanisms of CX 3 R-type OBPs during cobalt catalyzed peroxymonosulfate (Co 2+ /PMS) oxidation were investigated. In the formation of CX 3 R-type OBPs, both Co 3+ and SO 4 ·- could convert chloride to free chlorine that then reacted with natural organic matter, leading to the formation of CX 3 R-type OBPs. The concentrations of trichloromethane, chloral hydrate, dichloroacetonitrile, dichloroacetamide and trichloroacetamide after 15 min reaction were 9.8, 3.9, 1.2, 5.9 and 22.3 nM, respectively. Compared to SO 4 ·- , Co 3+ played a more significant role in the CX 3 R-type OBP formation and calculated toxicity values of CX 3 R-type OBPs. CX 3 R-type OBPs could not only be formed but also be degraded at the same time during Co 2+ /PMS oxidation. As for the degradation of CX 3 R-type OBPs, both Co 3+ and SO 4 ·- could transform CX 3 R-type OBPs to chloride. Compared to Co 3+ , SO 4 ·- played a more important role in the degradation of CX 3 R-type OBPs and the conversion from chloride to final by-product chlorate. The outdated test methodologies for terrestrial animals have limited the progress of soil ecotoxicology to some extent. To improve the behavioral testing of earthworms, a terrestrial model animal, a sensitive optical-based method for detecting locomotor activity was established. The method measured the fine quantified position offsets of each earthworm in place of a conventional overall response rate, which provided the feasibility for accurate analyses and comparisons. By setting appropriate thresholds, the time proportions of medium and burst states (mid-burdur%) could be an optimized endpoint with an ideal balance in output stability and sensitivity. In addition, we chose the head-end, which is the most flexible part of the earthworm, other than whole body to further elevate the sensitivity in indicating the changed traits. Using octopamine, serotonin, and a serial-dose of lindane exposure, the practice credibility of the test method was validated. In the present study, hydrochars (HCs) were prepared from pinewood biomass by high-temperature pyrolysis and applied as environmental-friendly adsorbents and catalysts in the removal of bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS) from water. It was found that the structural oxygen defects on hydrochars not only enhance the specific surface area for adsorption of the bisphenols, but also function as an electron conductor for molecular oxygen activation in nonradical pathways. The hydrochar pyrolyzed at 800 °C (HC-800) showed the superior adsorption and catalytic performances toward BPS and BPF removals in a wide pH range, and the removal efficiencies were hardly inhibited by the coexistent inorganic anions and humic acid. Particularly, the nonradical reaction is the dominated catalytic oxidation process in a H 2 O 2 -HC-800 system, different from the traditional radical-based process with persistent free radicals on hydrochars derived from low-temperature pyrolysis. Since the reactive species during the sulfite activation by Fe(III) (Fe(III)/sulfite process) had not been directly determined and the role of in-situ generated Fe(II) was overlooked, this study evaluated the oxidation performance of the Fe(III)/sulfite process, identified the reactive species, and investigated the role of in-situ generated Fe(II) in this process. The results demonstrated that carbamazepine (CBZ) could be degraded at different sulfite concentrations. Compared to the single-dosing mode, sulfite applied with multiple-dosing mode was beneficial to CBZ removal in this process when the same amount of sulfite was dosed. Fe(II) was rapidly generated and then decayed in this process, which were consistent with the trends of CBZ degradation and sulfite consumption. Electron paramagnetic resonance and scavenging experiments showed that SO 4 - was a major oxidant, while HO also played a significant role in CBZ degradation in this process. The tert-butyl alcohol assay indicated that the generation and re-oxidation of Fe(II) was accompanied with the generation of reactive species. Besides sulfite dosage, CBZ degradation was also affected by initial pH, Fe(III) dosage, and CBZ concentration. Cl - showed little inhibition on CBZ degradation while humic acid inhibited CBZ degradation in this process. Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), especially perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), have been showed to induce obesogenic effects which may last over generations. However, the underlying mechanisms are not yet clear. In the present study, wild-type N2 Caenorhabditis elegans and the daf-2 mutant were exposed to PFOA for 4 consecutive generations (F0 to F3) at 1.0 ng/L. Effects on fat content and fat metabolism in the directly exposed F0 to F3 generations, the offspring of F0 (T1 to T3) and also those of F3 (T1' to T3'). Results showed that PFOA significantly stimulated the fat contents in F0 (with the percentage of the control as 184.1%), T1 (189.5%), F1 (167.3%), F2 (238.0%), T2' (193.9%) and T3' (159.4%) while inhibited them in T3 (70%). The changes of fat contents over generations were accompanied with significant changes in enzymes facilitating fatty acid synthesis (e.g., acetyl-CoA carboxylase, fatty acid synthase and desaturase, and glycerol phosphate acyltransferase) and those in fatty acid consumption (e.g., acetyl CoA synthetase, fatty acid transport protein, acyl-CoA oxidase and carnitine palmitoyl transferase). Furthermore, RNA-Seq analysis was performed on F0, F3 and T3 generations. Based on the KEGG analysis of differential genes, PFOA exposure affected lipid metabolism signaling pathways including MAPK, fatty acid degradation, TGF-β signaling pathways. Notably, PFOA exposure provoked significantly different effects in daf-2 nematodes on fat contents, lipid metabolizing enzymes and even different signaling pathways. In this study, Fe 2+ addition was employed to overcome the negative effects of humic acid (HA) on contaminant removal by zerovalent iron (ZVI), and its feasibility to improve electron efficiency of ZVI was also tested. HA at high concentrations suppressed the removal of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) by ZVI, while the addition of 0.25-1.0 mM Fe 2+ could greatly mitigate this inhibitory effect and enhance 4-NP reduction. Specifically, with a mixed-order model, global fitting results showed that the addition of Fe 2+ increased the rate constant from 0.124 × 10 -2 -0.219 × 10 -2 mM/min to 0.227 × 10 -2 -0.417 × 10 -2 mM/min and shortened lag period from 19.7-47.9 min to 8.0-15.2 min for 4-NP removal. The mechanistic investigation revealed this trend could be explained by the following aspects: i) Fe 2+ can facilitate the generation of Fe(II)-containing oxides, which can act as an electron mediator or direct electron donor for 4-NP reduction; ii) the presence of Fe 2+ could lead to aggregation of HA particles and accordingly reduced its coverage on ZVI surface. But the results of respike experiments indicate that Fe 2+ addition did not show remarkable effect on the electron efficiency of 4-NP by ZVI, which should be associated with that Fe 2+ was not able to favor the enrichment of 4-NP on ZVI surface., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Increasing concerns are earned on the multigenerational hazards of antibiotics due to the connection between their mother-children transfer via cord blood and breast milk and obesity in the children. Currently, Caenorhabditis elegans was exposed to sulfamethoxazole (SMX) over 11 generations (F0-F10). Indicators of obesogenic effects and gene expressions were measured in each generation and also in T11 to T13 that were the offspring of F10. Biochemical analysis results showed that SMX stimulated fatty acids in most generations including T13. The stimulation was resulted from the balance between enzymes for fatty acid synthesis (e.g., fatty acid synthetase) and those for its consumption (e.g., fatty acid transport protein). Gene expression analysis demonstrated that the obesogenic effects of SMX involved peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPARs, e.g., nhr-49) and insulin/insulin-like signaling (IIS) pathways (e.g., ins-1, daf-2 and daf-16). Further epigenetic analysis demonstrated that SMX caused 3-fold more H3K4me3 binding genes than the control in F10 and T13. In F10, the most significantly activated genes were in metabolic and biosynthetic processes of various lipids, nervous system and development. Increasing concern has arisen regarding ubiquitous environmental distribution and potential ecological and health risks of chlorinated paraffins (CPs), especially short chain congeners. Four commercial CP products with different carbon chain lengths and chlorine contents were employed to investigate and compare the possible neurotoxic effects on zebrafish larvae at 5 days post fertilization using behavioral tests, including locomotion, path angle, and two-fish social interaction. The high-chlorinated short-chain CP-70 product resulted in the strongest effects in all three tests, while the low-chlorinated long-chain CP-42 product was on the other end of the spectrum. The consequences of the chain length of two CP-52 products could be clearly distinguished by the tests. Although exposure to the two products both caused inhibition in the locomotion test, they resulted in different kinds of effects in the path angle and interaction tests. Our results suggested, as evidenced by the sensitivity and resolution of the behavioral tests, that the influence of the chain length and chlorine content of CPs could be well characterized and that chlorine content consistently showed a more significant impact than chain length. We examined the spatial and vertical distribution of total mercury (THg) in 119 surface sediment samples and 4 sediment cores from the coastal East China Sea. The THg concentrations (3.6-69.2 μg kg -1 , average 34.7 μg kg -1 ) in surface sediments exhibited a decreasing trend from the inner shelf towards the outer shelf. The THg levels in sediment cores showed a significant increasing trend from the bottom to the top layer. Both the spatial and vertical distribution of THg indicates the impacts of anthropogenic inputs. The THg concentrations in the surface sediments of Yangtze River estuary were strongly correlated with sediment particle size and organic matter, governing by the Yangtze River inputs. The relatively higher THg levels in the surface sediments of southern inner shelf were attributed to the stronger binding affinity of the finer-grained sediments, the nature of organic matter, as well as local inputs. The spatial distribution of toxic methylmercury (MeHg) was distinct from THg, controlled by direct terrigenous MeHg inputs and in situ MeHg formation. The net Hg methylation potential (indicated by MeHg/THg ratio) in surface sediments were significantly influenced by both geochemical factors (DO, temperature and water depth) and the physicochemical properties of sediments (grain size, TOC, S, Fe 2 O 3 and MnO), and exhibited the highest correlation with TOC, suggesting the key role of organic matter in governing net MeHg production. Moreover, sites with high MeHg/THg ratios mainly occurred within the summer hypoxia zones adjacent to the Yangtze River estuary, suggesting special attention on Hg ecological risks should be paid in this region., (Copyright © 2019. Effect-based methods (EBMs) are recommended as holistic approach for diagnosis and monitoring of water quality; however, the application of EBMs is still scare in China. In the present study, water quality of the freshwater lake Taihu (China) was investigated by EBMs. Different types of water samples were collected from three bays of the lake during 2015, 2016 and 2017. A battery of seven effect-based bioassays, including both specific and non-specific toxicity assays, was used. The bioassay battery was recently suggested based on joint activities of the EU project SOLUTIONS and the NORMAN network on emerging pollutants and is also under discussion for being implemented into monitoring activities in the context of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). Adverse effects were observed towards the primary producer, primary consumer and fish, indicating the potential ecotoxicity of water in Taihu Lake. Mutagenic and estrogenic effects were found in the Ames fluctuation assay and ERα CALUX (Chemically Activated Luciferase Gene-eXpression) assay, respectively, highlighting the potential risks on human health. Algal growth inhibition and mutagenic effects can be observed during each of the three years. Acute toxicity towards Daphnia magna and estrogen receptor agonistic effects were found in at least one of the samples collected in 2016 and 2017, but not in 2015. The endpoints for fish toxicity in the Danio rerio fish embryo test included both lethal and additionally several sublethal effects (only for samples from 2017) and were not compared between years. Algal growth inhibition, fish embryo toxicity, mutagenic effect and estrogenicity were observed in each of the three bays, while Daphnia acute toxicity was only found in Zhushan Bay. Taking together, this study provides a big picture on the water quality of Taihu Lake. Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are inevitably generated during drinking water disinfection processes, and their hazards have not been well characterized. Because they plausibly cause toxicological and pathological damage to human kidney, we selected the human embryonic kidney (HEK293) cell, instead of the commonly used CHO cell, as a model to investigate the toxic potential and target of 10 DBPs, including 3 haloacetamides, 2 trihaloacetaldehydes and 5 iodomethanes. Based on the chronic toxicity parameter EC 10 of the cell viability test, we obtained a toxic rank of the tested DBPs different from previous studies and calculated their risk quotients by combining their actual concentrations in drinking water systems. Then, dichloroacetamide (DCAM), trichloroacetaldehyde (TCAL), and bromochloroiodomethane (BCIM) were selected to conduct multiple mechanistic bioassays, including cellular lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay, ATP metabolism, ROS production, mitochondria-derived apoptosis and qRT-PCR assay. All bioassays revealed the effects of interrupting the molecular, physiological and biochemical processes relevant to mitochondrial functions, such as oxidative respiration, apoptosis, and energy metabolism. Recently, hydrochar (HC) with existed persistent free radicals (PFRs) has attracted researches' attention for the potential application in heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions, but studies on the interactive effects of H 2 O 2 , iron, and HC in removal of organic pollutants are still limited. In this paper, magnetic iron (hydr)oxides immobilized hydrochar composite (Fe/HC) derived from hydrothermal carbon (HTC) of pinewood were synthesized and characterized. The interactive effects of H 2 O 2 , iron, and HC in the removal of several estrogens were systematically investigated to understand the removal performance and related mechanism, especially at a pH range close to natural water environment. Batch experiments results showed that estrogens could be efficiently removed over Fe/HC material under a wide pH range of 4-9. Based on the analysis of electron spin resonance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, mechanism study indicated that the carbon-centered PFRs on the surface of hydrochar can act as electron donors, and transfer the electrons on adsorbed O 2 to generate O 2 - rapidly, while the addition of H 2 O 2 enhanced the transmission ability of electron to produce OH (ads) on the material surface. The iron and hydrochar components contributed to the desirable removal of estrogens via the synergistic effect between catalysis and adsorption. Pharmaceuticals have been frequently detected in various water bodies, posing potential threat to human health and ecological environment. In this work, ZnFe-LDH derived mixed metal oxides (ZnO/ZnFe 2 O 4 , ZnFeMMO) were innovatively adopted to modulate the g-C 3 N 4 photocatalytic performance for the enhanced degradation of ibuprofen (IBF) and sulfadiazine (SDZ) as targeted pollutants. Characterization analyses indicated that the g-C 3 N 4 /ZnFeMMO composites were in the feature of rationally-designed microarchitecture, increased specific surface area, improved light absorbance and efficient charge separation, thereby resulting in promoted photocatalytic activities. Furthermore, the ratio of g-C 3 N 4 to ZnFeMMO in the composites was found to exert significant effects on the resulted microstructures and properties. The results showed that the composite with low g-C 3 N 4 content of 1.0 wt% or high g-C 3 N 4 content of 90 wt% exhibited the optimum catalytic activity for the degradation of IBF or SDZ, respectively. Such distinct structure-activities can be attributed to the different dominated reactive species in two cases: h + for IBF degradation but OH for SDZ degradation. A Z-scheme mechanism was proposed for the charge separation, together with ZnFe 2 O 4 as a light sensitizer. Degradation pathways for IBF and SDZ were established by ESI-QToF-MS technology.
