1. Mapping human perception of urban landscape from street-view images: A deep-learning approach

Abstract

Human perception of urban landscape, which signifies to what extent urban landscape is appreciated by local dwellers, informs human-oriented policies that reinforce public participation. Yet, conventional studies on human perception of urban landscape are largely dependent on individual experience, which may restrict the co-production of knowledge that can be operationalized across spatial scales and sectors. In this study, we mapped human perception of urban landscape in Shanghai by leveraging an advanced deep-learning approach and street-view images. Specifically, the ResNet50 model was employed to map four critical perceptions, i.e., security, depression, vitality, and aesthetic, at parcel level. We further explored the relationship between human perception and land-use types. Our results show that highly urbanized area (Puxi district encompassed by the Inner Ring Road) is perceived as more secure and vital, but more depressing. Besides, human perception varies substantially across different land-use types, among which administrative and service land is favored with regard to all the four perception types. This study advances our understanding of urban landscape through the lens of human perception, and provides nuanced insights into steering human settlement towards sustainability by strategically promoting mixed land use.

2. Seismic hazard assessment of the Kathmandu Valley and its adjoining region using a segment of the main Himalayan Thrust as a source

Abstract

An attempt has been made to evaluate seismic hazard in the Kathmandu Valley and its adjoining region. A segment of the Main Himalayan Thrust, which produced the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake is used as an earthquake source. Two rupture models of the source are utilized assigning unequal weight to estimate seismic hazard. The first model considers entire north-south rupture of the source that is similar to the rupture of the 1934 Bihar-Nepal Earthquake (Mw 8.2). The second model considers the northern-half rupture of the source, which is similar to that of the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake (Mw 7.8) and possibly the 1833 Nepal Earthquake (Mw 7.6).Seismic hazard maps are prepared for 500 and 200 year return periods at engineering rock site condition. A comparison is made between the peak ground acceleration (PGA) of Kathmandu and Nijgadh estimated for 200 year return period with the recorded PGA of the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake in Kathmandu (Kirtipur: a rock site) and empirically estimated PGA of that earthquake in Nijgadh respectively. Kathmandu and Nijgadh are selected for the comparison because Kathmandu falls within the rupture area of the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake and Nijgadh is in the Indogangetic Plain and away from the rupture area of that earthquake. The result shows that the PGA (0.23 g) estimated for Kathmandu for 200 year return period closely agrees with the instrumentally recorded PGA of the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake in Kathmandu (0.25 g). Instrumentally recorded PGA is not available in Nijgadh, which is at about 55 km in the south from Kathmandu. A seismic intensity survey was carried out in Nijgadh and its adjoining region to estimate the intensity of the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake in Nijgadh. The probabilistically estimated PGA (0.1 g) for Nijgadh for 200 year return period is in reasonable agreement with that of the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake (0.07 g) estimated from the seismic intensity (VI on MMI).

Abstract

[EN] Human-machine interaction is increasingly dependent on speech communication, mainly due to the remarkable performance of Machine Learning models in speech recognition tasks. However, these models can be fooled by adversarial examples, which are inputs in-tentionally perturbed to produce a wrong prediction without the changes being noticeable to humans. While much research has focused on developing new techniques to generate adversarial perturbations, less attention has been given to aspects that determine whether and how the perturbations are noticed by humans. This question is relevant since high fool-ing rates of proposed adversarial perturbation strategies are only valuable if the perturba-tions are not detectable. In this paper we investigate to which extent the distortion metrics proposed in the literature for audio adversarial examples, and which are commonly applied to evaluate the effectiveness of methods for generating these attacks, are a reliable mea-sure of the human perception of the perturbations. Using an analytical framework, and an experiment in which 36 subjects evaluate audio adversarial examples according to different factors, we demonstrate that the metrics employed by convention are not a reliable measure of the perceptual similarity of adversarial examples in the audio domain.

Abstract

This paper investigates the vibrations induced by humans through in situ behaviour tests of the 516 Arouca footbridge (Portugal), the world's longest span in 2020 (516 m). The study consists of in situ experimental tests in which the structure was subjected to wind and pedestrian loads. The bridge is first described, to provide design and construction details, after which its dynamic behaviour is evaluated. The estimated natural frequencies were found to be similar to those previously computed by the finite element method. In addition, modal damping ratios and scaling factors are given. The dynamic responses due to pedestrian loads are then analysed. The damping ratios were found to increase with higher structural response, which highlights the dependence of the damping ratio on the amplitude of the structural response. Pedestrian comfort was evaluated by analysing the amplitudes and accelerations of the vibrations and complemented by applying a survey to the visitors. The results of the in situ tests showed that the bridge can provide users with a challenging and rewarding experience as they cross it, without suffering displacements and accelerations that they might find unnerving.

Abstract

Building occupants are continuously exposed to multiple indoor environmental stimuli, including thermal, visual, acoustic, and air quality related factors. Moreover, personal and contextual aspects can be regarded as additional domains influencing occupants' perception and behaviour. The scientific literature in this area typically deals with these multiple stimuli in isolation. In contrast to single-domain research, multi-domain research analyses at least two different domains, for example, visual and thermal. The relatively few literature reviews that have considered multi-domain approaches to indoor-environmental perception and behaviour covered only a few dozen articles each. The present contribution addresses this paucity by reviewing 219 scientific papers on interactions and cross-domain effects that influence occupants’ indoor environmental perception and behaviour. The objective of the present review is to highlight motivational backgrounds, key methodologies, and major findings of multi-domain investigations of human perception and behaviour in indoor environments. The in-depth review of these papers provides not only an overview of the state of the art, but also contributes to the identification of existing knowledge gaps in this area and the corresponding need for future research. In particular, many studies use “convenience” variables and samples, there is often a lack of theoretical foundation to studies, and there is little research linking perception to action.

Exploiting relevant theoretical background, the authors present an example of a human controller comprising the feedback component and two different implementations of a pursuit controller. The parameters of the controllers are obtained from data measured on a flight simulator controlled by a pilot during the defined task. The first results presented in this paper indicate the possibility of use the described human control structure in HiLCPS modeling and its potential for other, more complex experiments within human factor assessment.

Abstract

We tackle the problem of predicting a grasping action in ego-centric video for the assistance to upper limb amputees. Our work is based on paradigms of neuroscience that state that human gaze expresses intention and anticipates actions. In our scenario, human gaze fixations are recorded by a glass-worn eye-tracker and then used to predict the grasping actions. We have studied two aspects of the problem: which object from a given taxonomy will be grasped, and when is the moment to trigger the grasping action. To recognize objects, we using gaze to guide Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to focus on an object-to-grasp area. However, the acquired sequence of fixations is noisy due to saccades toward distractors and visual fatigue, and gaze is not always reliably directed toward the object-of-interest. To deal with this challenge, we use video-level annotations indicating the object to be grasped and a weak loss in Deep CNNs. To detect a moment when a person will take an object we take advantage of the predictive power of Long-Short Term Memory networks to analyze gaze and visual dynamics. Results show that our method achieves better performance than other approaches on a real-life dataset. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. 13. The impact of the Covid-19 lockdown on the human experience of nature.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in extensive lockdowns implemented all around the world and billion of people have been asked to stay at home for several weeks. Although this global confinement has had potentially huge unintended consequences on the environment and on its associated wildlife, this study shows that it has also impacted the human experience of nature. Based on an online questionnaire, this study aims to assess how the significant changes in people's everyday lives induced by the French lockdown impacted their relationship with other species. Participants did not only observe and interact more with non human species, but also discovered new traits characterizing them, and felt less lonely thanks to them. The impact of the lockdown was stronger on people's relationship with their pets, farm animals, home plants and with birds than with other plants and animals. This study further demonstrates that participants with different profiles have been affected differently. In particular, women and people with better access to nature were clearly more sensitive to changes and have been more positively impacted in their relationships with other species. 14. Risk assessment based on fuzzy synthetic evaluation method.

Abstract

The IPCC fifth assessment report envisions risk of climate-related impacts as an outcome of the interaction of climate-related hazards with the vulnerability and the exposure of human and natural systems. This approach relies heavily on human perception, via expert opinions. As experts decide appropriate placement of an indicator in any of the exposure, sensitivity or adaptive capacity domains, several risk maps can potentially be created for the same study area. There is thus some degree of uncertainty in selecting the most appropriate and representative risk map from the several alternatives created by IPCC methods. On the other hand, Fuzzy Synthetic Evaluation (FSE) method, when used to assess risk, can handle this uncertainty much better, as there is no need to distribute indicators among different domains. In FSE, a specific indicator can either increase (positive sign) or decrease (negative sign) a risk, following a simple binary logic. This does not require any expert opinion and thus is free from subjective perception. In this study, risk maps are generated and compared by applying FSE method and two IPCC methods, as outlined in the third and fifth assessments (TAR and AR5). A variant of AR5 risk map is created by interchanging one indicator from the exposure domain to the sensitivity domain. It is found that risk zones are created with statistically significant difference when different IPCC methods are applied. This makes it uncertain to judge a specific risk map by a specific IPCC method as a true risk map. This uncertainty does not exist in FSE method as there is only one risk map where indicators are placed with certainty by following a simple binary logic for a known hazard domain. Abstract

Landscape change caused by ecological restoration projects has both positive and negative influences on human livelihoods, yet surprisingly little research on the cultural consequences of ecological restoration in agricultural landscapes has taken place. Cultural consequences can be captured in the ecosystem services framework as cultural ecosystem services (CES). However, assessment and valuation of these services to support decision-making for this essential ecosystem is lacking. To help fill this gap, we assessed the opinions of Chinese rural communities about CES and the changes in their perception under the Grain for Green program (GFG), a nationwide program to relieve the pressure on ecosystems (soil erosion and land degradation) by converting cultivated land or barren land on steep slopes into grassland and forests. We used Guyuan City in China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region as a case study, using a workshop to identify the CES provided by the agricultural landscape, followed by semi-structured household interviews to quantify perceptions of these CES. We found that all eight CES types identified by the workshop were perceived by the rural communities. Reforestation changed their perceptions of CES directly due to land cover change and indirectly due to the resulting economic changes and migration of mostly young workers in search of better jobs. Cultivated land was perceived as more important than forest for CES provision. In addition, residential areas were perceived as providing significant CES because of local traditions that produce close and highly social neighborhood bonds in agricultural landscapes., (Copyright © 2018 The Authors. Abstract

One of the valuable bioinformatics techniques is protein sequence alignment which is a method of searching, comparing and ordering the sequences of protein. The pointed method is employed to recognize region of similarity which may be a significance of functional, structural, or evolutionary relatives between the protein sequences. In current investigation, an innovative similarity search/alignment algorithm for pattern recognition process of protein structures in the frame of bio-mimicking pattern recognition capabilities of human visual and auditory systems towards investigating more and more novel approaches in the field of protein sequence alignment procedure. The selected approach in current investigation based on the concept of intra scientific facts and using both capabilities of bioinformatics and psychological knowledge led to present the unique automatic translational system (ATS-P) for translating protein structures to musical composition in addition to image color combination towards finalizing innovative pattern and method for protein alignment. Actually during current study, the perception of protein sequence via visual and sonic representation was projected to support researchers in the process of protein pattern recognition and structural demonstrating. Noise concerns frequently pose a barrier to widespread implementation of wind turbines and while the perception of noise from large turbines has been investigated, there is a relative gap in the research for small and micro wind turbines. This paper presents findings from interdisciplinary research linking noise measurements from small wind installations with an investigation into the effect of individual personality traits and noise perception. A survey distributed to households living close to one of 12 micro or small turbine sites, coupled with environmental noise measurements was analysed. The survey showed that the most commonly perceived noises are ‘swooshing’ and ‘humming’, the presence of which may be inferred from the measured frequency spectra. Exploration of survey results showed individuals with a more negative attitude to wind turbines perceive more noise from a turbine located close to their dwelling and those perceiving more noise report increased levels of general symptoms. Individuals' personality also affected attitudes to wind turbines, noise perception from small and micro turbines and symptom reporting.
