Automated, secure software development is an important digitalization task, solved with the DevSecOps approach. An important part of the DevSecOps approach is continuous risk assessment, which is necessary to identify and evaluate risk factors. Combining the development cycle with continuous risk assessment creates software development and operation synergies and minimizes vulnerabilities. The article presents the main methods of deploying web applications and ways to increase information security at all stages of product development. It also compares different types of infrastructures and cloud computing providers and analyzes modern tools used to automate processes. The cloud cluster was deployed using Terraform and the Jenkins pipeline, written in the Groovy programming language, which checks program code for vulnerabilities and allows you to fix violations at the earliest stages of developing secure web applications. The developed cluster implements the proposed algorithm for automated risk assessment based on the calculation (modeling) of cloud infrastructure threats and vulnerabilities, which operates in real-time, periodically collecting all information and adjusting the system according to the risk and applied controls. The algorithm for calculating risk and losses is based on statistical data and FAIR information risk assessment methodology. The risk value obtained using the proposed method is quantitative, which allows more efficient forecasting of information security costs in software development.

Background: The carcinogenic properties of arsenic make it one of the most hazardous chemicals globally. Nevertheless, the exact level of human exposure to arsenic and the associated risks of cancer and non-cancer effects through different pathways in Ethiopia are still uncertain. Objective: The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of both cancer and non-cancer outcomes among children and adults who have been exposed to arsenic through drinking water in the Adami Tulu Jido Kombolcha district of Ethiopia. Methods: For this study, a longitudinal study design was employed. A total of 45 groundwater sources were sampled using the census sampling method. The concentrations of total arsenic were measured using Agilent 7900 series inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risk assessments were conducted by calculating lifetime cancer risk and hazard quotients. Microsoft Office Excel was utilized to calculate human health risk indices, and descriptive statistical analysis were performed using SPSS software. Results: Our findings revealed that during the dry season, the mean arsenic concentration in the groundwater samples was 11.15 ± 9.38 µg/L, while during the rainy season, it was 10.67 ± 8.16 µg/L. The total cancer risk for children, resulting from oral ingestion and skin contact, was 1.15 × 10–2 and 1.07 × 10–2 during the dry and rainy seasons, respectively. For adults, the total cancer risk from oral ingestion and skin contact during the dry and rainy seasons was 4.95 × 10–3 and 4.59 × 10–3, respectively. Furthermore, the total hazard quotients for children via oral ingestion and skin absorption were 25.9 and 24.0 during the dry and rainy seasons, respectively. For adults, the total hazard quotients from ingestion and dermal contact during the dry and rainy seasons were 11 and 10, respectively. Conclusions: The findings indicate that the risks of cancer and non-cancer effects resulting from arsenic exposure through ingestion and dermal exposure were found to exceed the acceptable thresholds in both seasons. These results emphasize the urgent need for focused attention on the study population in the study area due to the high likelihood of experiencing adverse health outcomes.

Objective: Bleeding after cardiac surgery leads to poor outcomes. The objective of the study was to build the PeriOperative Bleeding Score in Cardiac surgery (POBS-Card) to predict bleeding after cardiac surgery. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in 2 academic hospitals (2016-2019). Inclusion criteria were adult patients after cardiac surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass. Exclusion criteria were heart transplantation, assistance, aortic dissection, and preoperative hemostasis diseases. Bleeding was defined by the universal definition for perioperative bleeding score ≥2. POBS-Card score was built using multivariate regression (derivation cohort, one center). The performance diagnosis was assessed using the area under the curve in a validation cohort (2 centers) and compared with other scores. Results: In total, 1704 patients were included in the derivation cohort, 344 (20%) with bleeding. Preoperative factors were body mass index 1.2 (OR, 1.44 [1.03-1.99]), prothrombin ratio 14 predicted bleeding with a sensitivity of 50% and a specificity of 73%. Conclusions: POBS-Card score was superior to other scores in predicting severe bleeding after cardiac surgery. Performances remained modest, questioning the place of these scores in the perioperative strategy of bleeding-sparing.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games was one of the largest international mass-gathering events held after the beginning of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In this scoping review, we extracted papers discussing COVID-19 risk assessment or management at the Tokyo 2020 Games to determine the nature of studies that were conducted. Among the 75 papers obtained from two search engines (PubMed and ScienceDirect) and four papers collected from hand-searches, 30 papers were extracted. Only eight papers performed both COVID-19 prior risk assessment and quantitative evaluation of effectiveness measures, highlighting the importance of rapid, solution-focused risk assessment. Furthermore, this review revealed that the findings regarding the spread of COVID-19 infection to citizens in the host country were inconsistent depending on the assessment methods and that assessments of the spread of infection outside the host country were lacking.

The Al-Qassim region, a prominent agricultural hub in Saudi Arabia, significantly contributes to the national production of vegetables and fruits. This study validated the standard EN-QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) method in conjunction with liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) to determine 90 multiple pesticide residues in three categories of peppers: green bell, green hot and red chilli peppers. Validation criteria, including linearity range, accuracy, precision, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantification (LOQ), were within the acceptance range of the SANTE/11312/2021 guideline. The validated method was then used to analyse 536 pepper samples collected in 2023 from the Al-Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. The analysis of 536 pepper samples revealed that 394 samples (73.51 %) contained pesticide residues, with 126 (23.51 %) exceeding the established maximum residue limits (MRLs). The most frequently identified pesticide was imidacloprid (171 samples, 31.9 %) and acetamiprid (94 samples, 17.54 %), followed by bifenazate and difenoconazole, which were each detected in 66 samples (12.31 %). The elasmobranch population is declining in the Bay of Bengal of Bangladesh due to large-mesh gill net fishing, locally known as the Lakkha net, which primarily targets Indian threadfin (Leptomelanosoma indicum). This study was the first attempt to identify megafaunal bycatch in Lakkha fishing and assess its vulnerability using Productivity Susceptibility Analysis. A total of 40 elasmobranch bycatch species were identified, with sharks comprising 13 species from three families, while 27 rays belonged to six families, with the majority belonging to the Myliobatiformes order (60 %). Productivity and susceptibility scores were assigned to all identified species, with values ranging from 1.27 to 2.73 and 1.50 to 2.63, respectively. The target Lakkha fish exhibited the highest susceptibility score, followed by several pelagic sharks and eagle rays. Vulnerability assessment revealed that 31.7 % (n = 13) of species were highly vulnerable, while 43.9 % (n = 18) were classified as moderate, and 24.4 % (n = 10) were considered to have low vulnerability. All the high-risk megafauna species (n = 13) are classified as threatened by the global IUCN Red List. Sensitivity analysis highlighted susceptibility as a major contributor to species’ vulnerability. Alterations in susceptibility scores led to significant changes in the vulnerability status of many species. The overall data quality assessment indicated moderate data quality across species, with variability observed between productivity (76 % of species received a poor data quality score) and susceptibility attributes. However, vulnerability of these species can be reduced through adequate gear modification, shorter net deployment periods, adoption of safe discharge techniques, identification of critical habitats, and establishment of marine protected areas within this region. This study provides valuable insights into the species composition and vulnerability of elasmobranchs in the Lakkha gill net fishery, emphasizing the need for conservation measures to mitigate bycatch impacts on threatened species.

Biomonitoring has been widely used in assessing exposures in both occupational and public health complementing chemical risk assessments because it measures the concentrations of chemical substances in human body fluids (e.g., urine and blood). Biomonitoring considers all routes and sources of exposure. An occupational biomonitoring guidance document has been elaborated (OECD Occupational Biomonitoring Guidance) within the OECD framework and specifically, the Working Parties on Exposure and Hazard Assessment by scientific experts from 40 institutes and organizations representing 15 countries. The guidance provides practical information for assessing chemical exposures in occupational settings including the three common routes of exposure: inhalation, skin absorption and ingestion due to hand to mouth contact. The elaborated stepwise approach for conducting biomonitoring is tailored for occupational health professionals, scientists, risk assessors, and regulators. It includes methods for selecting appropriate biomarkers, devising sampling strategies, and assessing laboratories for validated analytical methods for the biomarker of interest, and ensuring timely feedback of results. Furthermore, it describes procedures for setting up efficient biomonitoring programs based on the Similar Exposure Group (SEG) approaches. Derived health-based human exposure biomarker assessment values called Occupational Biomonitoring Levels (OBLs) are proposed for use in occupational exposure and risk assessment. It also helps with the interpretation of biomonitoring results routinely collected and procedures for communicating biomonitoring results at individual, collective, and workplace levels. Ethical considerations associated with biomonitoring are also discussed. The ultimate goal of this biomonitoring approach is to promote harmonized application and interpretation of biomarkers as well as evidence-based occupational risk management measures.

Background: Africa is experiencing a significant surge in the use of pesticides on farms. Though the use of pesticide products on farms is increasing rapidly, the ability to monitor and regulate the practice has not kept pace. Despite their potential significance, the health and environmental impacts of the growing pesticide usage in developing nations remain inadequately comprehended and recorded. Objective: This paper presents a research protocol for a study that seeks to provide criteria for future monitoring of pesticide residues in aquatic environments and food sources. This study aims to evaluate pesticide utilisation methods and the potential hazards of pesticide residues in aquatic ecosystems. Additionally, the study seeks to assess the human health risks linked to pesticide applications. Methods: This study will employ a quantitative approach and cross-sectional design. It will utilise a combination of survey and the collection of biological and environmental samples. Our methodology consists of four distinct steps. These outline the processes for studying pesticide residue in environmental and fish samples. Additionally, we plan to employ mathematical algorithms to evaluate the ecological and health risks associated with these pesticide residues. Conclusion: This study is an effort to monitor and assess the hazards to the environment and human well-being associated with the increasing utilisation of pesticides. It also aims to gather relevant data on pesticide utilisation practices that contribute to the contamination of aquatic ecosystems. It will specifically focus on determining the concentration of pesticide residues in both biological and environmental samples. Additionally, the study will assess the ecological and health risks associated with these pesticide residues. This will enable the incorporation of organised research efforts and coordinated pesticide surveillance operations for toxicovigilance.

It has been over 20 years since the world entered the 21st century, and the economy and science and technology of various countries have developed rapidly. However, the threat and losses of natural disasters to humanity have never diminished. Global disaster risk is increasing year by year in new forms and scales. Sichuan Province, as one of the provinces with the highest number of geological disasters in China, and its rural settlements, as a high-risk area for geological disasters, are the key and difficult points for disaster prevention in China. This article selects rural settlements in Yibin City, Sichuan Province as the research area. By analyzing historical disasters and local geographical characteristics, statistical methods are used to screen and construct a geological hazard risk assessment model for rural settlements in Yibin City. A quantitative and qualitative analysis was conducted on the key indicators of geological hazard risk in rural settlements in Yibin City. Multiple models were used to comprehensively evaluate the risk of geological hazards in rural settlements in Yibin City and a zoning study was conducted. Then, the accuracy of different models was compared, and the random forest model was selected as the computation model for disaster avoidance site selection in rural settlements in Yibin City. Thus obtaining the zoning map of geological hazard risk level in Yibin City. Finally, we conducted a site selection analysis for Rural settlements with different levels of geological hazard risk. And propose strategies for optimizing site selection.

Water security is deeply intertwined with ecosystems, society and the economy, and is a frequent focal point of sustainable development. This study investigates the water security (WS) of Inner Mongolia, a dryland region in northern China. Specifically, an indicator system integrating the principles of Stability (S), Cooperation (C), and Resilience (R) was constructed to quantitatively and comprehensively assess water security. Risk probability was calculated by the constructed system by combining its output with a copula function. The findings revealed that: (1) WS-SCR levels in the study area gradually increased from 2001 to 2021. The periods multi-year average was 0.42, which is at the threshold level of security; (2) Based on a standard deviation ellipse, the spatial distribution of WS-SCR levels changed from northeast to southwest and back to northeast. The centroid of change shifted from east to west and back to east; (3) Key drivers influencing water security included GDP per capita (S3), agricultural irrigation water consumption per unit area (C4), comprehensive water use per capita (C5), reclaimed water use rate (C8), fertilizer application per unit of farmland (R4), and population density (R5); (4) The S-C, S-R, and C-R relationships within the study area were best modelled by the Clayton copula function, whereas the S-C-R relationship was most accurately modelled by using a Frank copula function. The three-dimensional joint risk probability S-C-R (S≤0.4, C≤0.4, R≤0.4) is 0.226; the probability that R was insecure increased with increasing S or C index values. This study provides a scientific foundation for the long-term planning and management of sustainable water security development in Eurasian drylands.

Land use conversion in estuary wetlands may affect the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), while the risk rank of the ARGs and the change of clinically relevant ARGs under various land-use types are not well understood. This study used metagenomics to reveal the diversity and abundance of ARGs across five distinct land uses: reed wetland, tidal flat, grassland, agricultural land and fallow land, as well as their distribution and potential health risks. Results showed that high numbers of ARG subtypes and classes were detected irrespective of land-use types, notably higher in agricultural land (144 ARG subtypes). The most shared ARG subtypes were multidrug resistance genes across all the land uses (29 subtypes, 4.7 × 10−2-1.5 × 10−1 copies per 16S rRNA gene copy). Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were primary ARG hosts, with 18 and 15 ARGs were found in both of them, respectively. The ARG subtype mdtB was the most dominant clinical ARG detected with 90 % amino acid identity. The change of ARGs exhibited a consistent trend across land uses in terms of health risk ranks, with the highest observed in fallow land and the lowest in reed wetland. This study reveals the distribution pattern of ARGs across various land-use types, and enhances our understanding of the potential health risks associated with ARGs in the context of coastal wetland conversion in estuary areas.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Quality Risk Management (QRM) system in hospital pharmacy intravenous admixture services (PIVAS). Methods: Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and risk matrix methods were used to systematically assess the critical risk points in PIVAS. By collecting and comparing relevant data from 2019 to 2023, key performance indicators (KPIs) before and after the implementation of the QRM system were quantitatively evaluated. Results: The results showed that the safety and efficiency of pharmacy services significantly improved after the implementation of the QRM system. The medication error rate significantly decreased from 3.2% to 1.1%, the average medication preparation time reduced from 15.5 min to 8.2 min, and staff satisfaction increased from 6.0 to 8.5 points. Environmental pollutants are considered as a cause of tumorigenesis, but approaches to assess their risk of causing tumors remain insufficient. As an alternative approach, the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) framework is used to assess the risk of tumors caused by environmental pollutants. Arsenic is a pollutant associated with lung cancer, but early assessment of lung cancer risk is lacking. Therefore, we applied the AOP framework to arsenic-induced lung cancer. A systematic review revealed increased risks of lung cancer following exposure to a range of arsenic concentrations in drinking water (OR = 1.83, 95 % CI = 1.46–2.30). We obtained, from public databases, genes related to risk of arsenic-induced lung cancer. Then, Cox and LASSO regressions were used to screen target genes from the risk genes. Subsequently, target genes, phenotypes, and pathways were used to construct the computational AOP network, which was determined by Cytoscape to have 156 edges and 45 nodes. Further, target genes, phenotypes, and pathways were used as molecular initiating events and key events to construct the AOP framework depending on upstream and downstream relationships. In the AOP framework, by Weight of Evidence, arsenic exposure increased levels of EGFR, activated the PI3K/AKT pathway, regulated cell proliferation by promoting the G1/S phase transition, and caused generation of lung cancers. External validation was achieved through arsenite-induced, malignant transformed human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells. Overall, these results, by integration into existing data to construct an AOP framework, provide insights into the assessment of lung cancer risk for arsenic exposure. Special attention needs to be focused on populations with low-dose arsenic exposure.

Objectives: The anticipated increase in international tourist flows and the first locally acquired dengue cases in the Paris region in October 2023 have raised concerns about potential arbovirus outbreaks during the 2024 Olympics. Unlike previous mass sporting events at risk of arbovirus outbreaks, Paris is a nonendemic arbovirus area, requiring a unique investigation. Methods: Therefore, we analyzed factors conducive to possible arbovirus epidemics in temperate regions: vector distribution in the Paris area, seasonal global arboviral disease patterns, projected visitor demographics, and international flight bookings. Results and conclusion: Our results suggest that the expected visitors’ profile for the summer of 2024 should not increase the risk of arbovirus importation into the Paris region compared to a typical year. Conversely, the primary risk of arbovirus outbreaks is likely to come from within France, particularly from the French West Indies, where a notable, albeit declining, dengue outbreak is underway. Vigilant surveillance by French health authorities will ensure that this trend continues.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine sex-related differences in the long-term (20-year) incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its determinants. Methods: In 2002, 3,042 apparently healthy Greek adults were recruited, and in 2022, the 20-year follow-up was conducted with 2,169 participants, 1,988 of whom had completed CVD assessments. Sex-specific analyses using nested Cox proportional hazards were performed, as well as classification and regression tree (CRT) analysis modeling. Results: Overall, men exhibited higher CVD incidence rates during the 20-year period compared to women; age-adjusted analyses revealed, however, that women displayed higher CVD rates between 55 and 75 years old. CVD mortality and premature mortality were more pronounced in men. Although, CVD presentation in women lagged men, over survival was comparable. Moreover, the CVD risk factors burden was greater in women beyond the age of 35. Clinical risk factors and adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern emerged as the most significant predictors of sex-specific 20-year CVD incidence. Conclusion: This study highlights various sex disparities in CVD, challenging prevailing perceptions that CVD is a men's phenomenon. Tailoring prevention strategies to address sex-specific differences, particularly through lifestyle interventions, could effectively reduce CVD burden.

Consumption of fluoride-contaminated water is a worldwide concern, especially in developing countries, including Iran. However, there are restricted studies of non-single-value health risk assessment and the disease burden regarding fluoride intake nationwide. Prolonged exposure to excessive fluoride has been linked to adverse health effects such as dental and skeletal fluorosis. This can lead to under-mineralization of hard tissues, causing aesthetic concerns for teeth and changes in bone structure, increasing the risk of fractures. As such, we aimed to implement probability-based frameworks using Monte Carlo methods to explore the potential adverse effects of fluoride via the ingestion route. This platform consists of two sectors: 1) health risk assessment of various age categories coupled with a variance decomposition technique to measure the contributions of predictor variables in the outcome of the health risk model, and 2) implementing Monte Carlo methods in dose-response curves to explore the fluoride-induced burden of diseases of dental fluorosis and skeletal fractures in terms of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). For this purpose, total water samples of 8053 (N=8053) from 57 sites were analyzed in Fars and Bushehr Provinces. The mean fluoride concentrations were 0.75 mg/L and 1.09 mg/L, with maximum fluoride contents of 6.5 mg/L and 3.22 mg/L for the Fars and Bushehr provinces, respectively. The hazard quotient of the 95th percentile (HQ>1) revealed that all infants and children in the study area were potentially vulnerable to over-receiving fluoride. Sobol’ sensitivity analysis indices, including first-order, second-order, and total order, disclosed that fluoride concentration (Cw), ingestion rate (IRw), and their mutual interactions were the most influential factors in the health risk model. DALYs rate of dental fluorosis was as high as 981.45 (uncertainty interval: UI 95 % 353.23–1618.40) in Lamerd, and maximum DALYs of skeletal fractures occurred in Mohr 71.61(49.75–92.71), in Fars Province, indicated severe dental fluorosis but mild hazard regarding fractures. Residents of the Tang-e Eram in Bushehr Province with a DALYs rate of 3609.40 (1296.68–5993.73) for dental fluorosis and a DALYs rate of 284.67 (199.11–367.99) for skeletal fractures were the most potentially endangered population. By evaluating the outputs of the DALYs model, the gap in scenarios of central tendency exposure and reasonable maximum exposure highlights the role of food source intake in over-receiving fluoride. This research insists on implementing defluoridation programs in fluoride-endemic zones to combat the undesirable effects of fluoride. The global measures presented in this research aim to address the root causes of contamination and help policymakers and authorities mitigate fluoride's harmful impacts on the environment and public health.

CRISPR/Cas9, a potent genetic engineering tool widely adopted in agriculture, is capable of introducing new characteristics into plants on a large scale and without conventional breeding methods. Despite its remarkable efficiency, concerns have arisen regarding unintended consequences in uncontrolled environments. Our aim was to assess potential activity in organisms that could be exposed to genome editing in uncontrolled environments. We developed three scenarios, using irrigation, fumigation and fertilization as delivery methods, based on outdoor uses in agriculture, namely pest and disease control. Using publicly available software (Cas-OFFinder, NCBI Genome Data Viewer and STRING), off-target effects were predicted in multiple species commonly found in the agroecosystem, including humans (16 of 38 (42 %) sampled). Metabolic enrichment analysis (gene IDs), by connecting off-target genes into a physiological network, predicted effects on the development of nervous and respiratory systems. Our findings emphasize the importance of exercising caution when considering the use of this genome editing in uncontrolled environments. Unintended genomic alterations may occur in unintended organisms, underscoring the significance of understanding potential hazards and implementing safety measures to protect human health and the environment.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is the most prevalent mesenchymal tumor of the digestive tract. Its growth is primarily influenced by mutations in KIT or PDGFRA. Surgery is the primary treatment option for GIST; however, KIT inhibitors, such as imatinib, are used for inoperable cases. Resistance to imatinib is an upcoming challenge, especially because the effectiveness of alternative drugs is limited. Enhancement of the glycolysis pathway in cancer cells has been identified as a key feature in cancer. This unique metabolic activity has implications on tumor growth, prognosis, and resistance to therapy, even in GIST. Members of the glucose transporter (GLUT) family (particularly GLUT-1) play a significant role in GIST progression and response to treatment. Diagnostic imaging using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography, which enables visualization of glucose metabolism, can aid in GIST diagnosis and risk assessment. The interplay between glycolysis and GIST can lead to the development of various therapeutic strategies, especially those involving glycolysis-related molecules, such as hexokinase and lactate dehydrogenase. However, further research is required to understand the full spectrum of glycolysis in GIST and its therapeutic potential. Herein, we present an exhaustive overview and analysis of the role of glycolysis in GIST, especially as a therapeutic target.

As an important indicator of water pollution, heavy metals in lake sediments can reflect the severity of pollution in the entire study area. Although the risk assessment of heavy metals in sediment from various lakes has been widely studied, there is a lack of understanding on the overall pollution risk assessment of heavy metals in sediment from Inner Mongolia lakes located in cold and arid regions. This study based on data from 2019 to 2023 on heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, and Cd) in typical lake sediments in Inner Mongolia, combining toxicity, ground accumulation index, and potential ecological risks with Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate lakes. Furthermore, the origins of heavy metals in lake sediments were quantitatively analyzed using a qualitative analysis and an absolute principal component core–multiple linear regression model. This study presented the following results. Firstly, according to the toxicity index, ground accumulation index, and potential ecological risk coefficient, Cd and Cr were identified as the most hazardous and toxic elements in typical lake sediments in Inner Mongolia. Secondly, the degree of lake pollution in Inner Mongolia followed a heavy to light gradient, with central > eastern > western. The pollution in western lakes primarily originated from natural factors, whereas central lakes were mainly affected by pollutants from industry, agriculture, and human activities. Eastern lakes experienced pollution primarily from animal husbandry activities and natural factors. The comprehensive analysis presented in this study can serve as a valuable reference for the restoration of polluted lakes.

Forest fires pose severe threats to ecosystems and communities globally, especially in vulnerable semi-arid regions like North Africa. Understanding the key factors influencing forest fire dynamics is essential for effective management and mitigation. This study aims to comprehensively analyze forest fire risk patterns in Djebel El Ouahch's massif (Algeria), focusing on integrating bioclimatic, fuel, geomorphological, and human factors through advanced fuzzy logic and geographic information system (GIS) techniques. Climatic station data, satellite imagery, and GIS were employed to map bioclimatic parameters, land cover, and geomorphological features. Fuzzy logic systems were applied to integrate these factors, assigning appropriate weights based on their significance. The resulting forest fire prediction model was defuzzified to generate predictive maps indicating varying vulnerability levels within the study area. Predictive maps delineated areas of low to high forest fire risk. Low-risk zones were characterized by sparse vegetation, while high-risk regions featured densely vegetated slopes near human settlements. The study identified critical factors influencing vulnerability, emphasizing the impact of climate, terrain, and human activities. Urgent attention was directed toward high-risk areas, necessitating tailored fire prevention measures and strategic urban planning to minimize human-induced risks. The results underscored the complex interaction of natural and anthropogenic factors in shaping forest fire susceptibility. Understanding these dynamics facilitates evidence-based policymaking, enhancing forest fire preparedness, biodiversity preservation, and community safety. Additionally, the study emphasized the need for continuous research incorporating real-time climate data and socio-economic factors to refine predictive models. This research provided valuable insights into forest fire risk patterns in Djebel El Ouahch, serving as a foundation for targeted fire management strategies. By bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, this study contributes significantly to sustainable forest management and disaster mitigation efforts globally, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures in safeguarding vulnerable ecosystems and communities.

Indoor environments can pose a substantial respiratory infection risk, especially in densely populated areas. It is therefore vital to evaluate and predict infection risks for mobile individuals engaging in indoor activities. However, previous studies have primarily focused on assessing viral transmission probabilities between relatively stationary individuals, disregarding the dynamic features of pedestrian trajectories. To address this issue, we propose an approach that uses precise trajectory data and digital twin technology to evaluate and forecast indoor infection risks for mobile individuals. Our approach involves the utilization of high-precision trajectory data to develop a time-varying virus density field map (VDFM), forming the basis for infection risk assessment. Additionally, we present a deep-learning model that employs the transformer method to predict future time-varying VDFMs and associated infection risks. Furthermore, we introduce digital twin to comprehend real-time interactions between the physical and digital realms within the structure. To validate our approach, we conducted a case study at the Wuhan International Exposition Center, serving as the control room. We performed a sensitivity analysis on various preventive measures, including mask-wearing, social distancing, and indoor infection control. The results highlighted the significant impact of these measures on individual infection risks associated with indoor activities. Our research contributes to the development of tailored prevention and control strategies, which play a critical role in mitigating the spread of respiratory infections. Thus, this study holds significant implications for technology-facilitated public health services.

Lithium is a key medication for the treatment of psychiatric disorders and is also used in various industrial applications (including battery production and recycling). Here, we review published data on the endocrine-disrupting potential of lithium, with a particular focus on the thyroid hormone system. To this end, we used PubMed and Scopus databases to search for, select and review primary research addressing human and animal health endpoints during or after lithium exposure at non-teratogenic doses. Given the key role of thyroid hormones in neurodevelopmental processes, we focused at studies of the neural effects of developmental exposure to lithium in humans and animals. Our results show that lithium meets the World Health Organization’s definition of a thyroid hormone system disruptor – particularly when used at therapeutic doses. When combined with knowledge of adverse outcome pathways linking molecular initiating events targeting thyroid function and neurodevelopmental outcomes, the neurodevelopmental data reported in animal experiments prompt us to suggest that lithium influences neurodevelopment. However, we cannot rule out the involvement of additional modes of action (i.e. unrelated to the thyroid hormone system) in the described neural effects.Given the increasing use of lithium salts in new technologies, attention must be paid to this emerging pollutant – particularly with regard to its potential effects at environmental doses on the thyroid hormone system and potential consequences on the developing nervous system.

Dietary exposure risks of 39 multi-class Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) to the threatened Gangetic dolphins (Platanista gangetica) were investigated in a conservation-priority segment of the Ganga River. Elevated EDCs bioaccumulation was observed across prey fish species, with di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) significantly contributing to the EDC burden. The concentrations of persistent organochlorines in prey revealed a shift from dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to non-dioxin-like PCBs. The prevalence of regulated p,p' DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) and γ-HCH (Lindane) residues suggests regional non-compliance with regulatory standards. The concentration of some EDCs is dependent on the habitat, foraging behavior, trophic level and fish growth. The potential drivers of EDCs contamination in catchment includes agriculture, vehicular emissions, poor solid waste management, textile industry, and high tourist influx. Risk quotients (RQs) based on toxicity reference value were generally below 1, while the RQ derived from the reference dose highlighted a high risk to Gangetic dolphins from DEHP, DDT, DnBP, arsenic, PCBs, mercury, and cadmium, emphasizing the need for their prioritization within monitoring programs. Wildfires have caused immense damage to the environment, property and human safety in recent years. Fortunately, the deployment of firefighting aircraft, particularly water bombers, has emerged as one of the most effective strategies for combating wildfires. However, the intricate environment of forest fire sites, characterized by thermal turbulence and canyon winds, presents a formidable flight risk for firefighting aircraft. To address this issue, this study conducted a comprehensive risk assessment of firefighting aircraft operating in a wildfire environment, analyzing the impact of thermal turbulence and canyon winds using a finite element simulation method. This approach not only bridges the research gap in the field of flight safety but also evaluates the environmental risks encountered by firefighting aircraft when entering forest fire sites. Our findings underscore thermal turbulence and canyon winds as potential hazards for aircraft flying over mountainous terrain, elucidating the effect of thermal turbulence on aircraft engine intakes and quantifying the total lift loss incurred during encounters with canyon winds featuring non-uniform airflow velocities. Specifically, thermal turbulence can induce instability and vibration in aircraft engines, whereas canyon winds can generate updrafts and downdrafts that may compromise aircraft structures or lead to lift loss. Furthermore, we cite several references to emphasize the multifaceted risks associated with the forest fire site environment, encompassing temperature gradients, thunderstorms, and air pollution. Such comprehensive wildfire data can be invaluable in assessing the flight safety of firefighting aircraft during water-dropping missions in forest fire scenarios.

Introduction: Long-term contamination of tap water and groundwater by perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has been documented in the Veneto region of northern Italy. This study aimed to assess the exposure of individuals residing in the contaminated area and to test several toxicokinetic (TK) models of varying complexities to identify an efficient method for predicting perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) concentrations in human serum using observed data.The ultimate goal is to provide public health officials with guidance on selecting the appropriate TK model for specific contexts, a reliable and rapid tool to support human bio-monitoring (HBM) studies. Methods: Two simpler empirical TK models and a more complex multi-compartment physiologically based toxicokinetic (PBTK) model were compared with individual and aggregate data from an HBM study. In addition, the PBPK model was modified by adjusting input parameters and introducing new terms into the equations within the original model code. These modifications aimed to optimize the results compared to the original model, with some versions incorporating adjustments to account for the influence of menstruation in women. All models were evaluated to understand their strengths and weaknesses, providing guidance on the appropriate model to use according to specific scenarios. Results: The results obtained from the tested models were quite similar, with significant improvements observed only in the modified models. Simpler models also provided satisfactory results in scenarios involving low PFOS serum concentrations and recent exposure cessation. In many cases, predictions demonstrated high accuracy, particularly at the aggregate level and for women. Conclusions: These findings suggest that environmental protection agencies and health authorities may benefit from employing the tested models at the aggregate level as an initial step in HBM studies, rather than conducting more invasive and expensive screening campaigns.

Dialkyl phthalate esters are incorporated to enhance the pliability and prevent brittleness in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tubing. Exposure to these compounds occurs throughout human lifetimes via ingestion, inhalation, and direct skin contact. A study was conducted to evaluate concentrations of four specific phthalates—dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)—in the indoor air of both industrial and administrative sectors within the PVC manufacturing facilities. Air sampling was conducted in the spring season at two polyethylene factories in Zahedan Industrial Park (Sistan and Baluchestan Province, Iran). The outcomes demonstrated that mean concentrations of these substances in industrial along with administrative departments 485.7 μg/m3 and 49.83 μg/m3for DMP, 807.38 μg/m3 and 30.17 μg/m3 for DEP, 849.62 μg/m3 and 37.50 μg/m3 for DBP along with 1268.08 μg/m3 and 45.50 μg/m3 for DEHP respectively. The probabilistic lifetime cancer risk (LTCR) of DEHP in the indoor air of Zahedan PVC factories for men and women was determined using the Monte Carlo simulation technique. The computed mean LTCRs of DEHP for men and women in the indoor air of industrial and administrative departments in Zahedan PVC were 1.3 × 10−3, 1.2 × 10−3and 4.7 × 10−5,4.2 × 10−5respectively. Data showed that DEHP was a potential risk to human health.

Disposable masks, formed mainly from polymers, often incorporate various chemical additives to enhance their performance. These additives, which include plasticizers, may be released during mask usage, presenting a novel source of human exposure to these compounds. In this study, the presence of 16 organophosphate esters (OPEs), 11 phthalates, and four alternative plasticizers, in four various types of face masks, were studied, as well as their release during simulated mask use (artificial laboratory conditions). Total plasticizer concentrations exhibited minimal variation across different mask types, with mean values of 7.27 µg/face mask for surgical, 8.61 µg/face mask for reusable, 11.0 µg/face mask for KN-95, and 13.9 µg/face mask for FFP2 masks. To explore plasticizer release behavior, inhalation experiments were conducted under different conditions. The findings revealed a significant temperature-dependent enhancement in plasticizer release from masks, subsequently increasing human inhalation exposure. The inhalation experiments showed variation in the release percentages, ranging from 0.1 to 95 %, depending on the specific compound and mask type. Notably, OPEs exhibited a mean release percentage of 1.0 %, similar to phthalates, which showed a 1.2 % release. Although alternative plasticizers were less frequently released, they still presented a notable percentage of release of 4.1 %. Daily intake estimations via inhalation ranged from 0.01 to 9.04 ng/kg body weight (bw)/day for these additives. Using these estimations, carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks associated with this exposure to these compounds were evaluated. All calculated values for the specific compounds studied in this paper remained below the established threshold limits. However, they do represent an additional exposure pathway that, when considered alongside other more predominant routes such as indoor/outdoor inhalation, dermal absorption, and dietary intake, makes the total exposure worthy of consideration.

Beiliu City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, like other karst landscape areas, is also suffering from the threat of landslides. This research applied the circular variance method to delineate 31,465 slope units and then combined it with a geographic information system and a well-established risk assessment system to synthesize three perspectives-susceptibility, hazard, and vulnerability to realize the risk assessment of karst landslides in Beiliu City. Using perennial field surveys, aerial images-derived landslide inventories, slope unit investigations, and a literature review combined with a Fully Convolutional Neural Networks approach, we present a culminating in the derivation of landslide susceptibility assessment outcomes within the study area. Because Beiliu City is located in a karst area, this research employs the quantification of soil erosion intensity as a metric to assess landslide hazard. In this study, based on a comprehensive analysis of the basic characteristics of landslides and their associated disaster-bearing bodies, a robust landslide vulnerability assessment index system was constructed for risk assessment of karst landslides in Beiliu City. The landslide risk assessment model in karst area is constructed by combining the landslide susceptibility and the vulnerability in the danger range. Detailed field surveys verified the scientific validity and accuracy of the assessment results. This research extends beyond merely furnishing scientific data support for local governmental efforts in disaster prevention and mitigation. It impressively enhances the methodological framework for conducting landslide risk assessments within karst landscapes, thereby offering a robust foundation for both immediate and strategic responses to the inherent geological vulnerabilities of these areas.

Given the escalating apprehensions regarding climate change and environmental risks, the construction industry is confronted with the crucial task of guaranteeing the enduring structural robustness of buildings. Building Information Modeling (BIM) has emerged as an innovative tool to tackle these challenges effectively and enhance the performance of building structures processes by developing intelligent and sustainable structures. A comprehensive methodology was utilized to assess the relationships between the BIM factors and their impacts on smart and sustainable structure development by conducting a literature overview, quantitative analysis, exploratory factorial analysis (EFA), structural equation modeling (SEM), and predictive relevance findings. The findings show positive correlations between the implementation of BIM and the elements integral to smart and sustainable structure development. This study investigates the effects of BIM-driven environmental risk assessment, BIM-enabled energy efficiency, environmental performance, climate change adaptation strategies with BIM, and real-time monitoring and maintenance on the effectiveness of smart and sustainable structures development. The BIM-driven environmental risk assessment significantly impacts the sustainable and smart structures development with B = 0.360, followed by the real-time monitoring and maintenance with BIM with 0.316. This study provides the contemporary knowledge base by providing insights into BIM's transformative abilities in shifting sustainable and smart construction practices. The outcomes offer widespread insights to enterprise specialists interested in enhancing task effects and organizing sustainable and environmentally aware built surroundings. The growing popularity of BIM has implications for the future growth of the construction industry in phrases of ecologically smart and sustainable structure development.

Background: Predicting post-transplant (PT) survival in lung allocation remains an elusive goal. We analyzed the impact of donor factors on PT survival and how these relationships vary among transplant recipients. Methods: We studied primary bilateral lung transplant recipients (n = 7,609) from the US Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (19 February 2015-1 February 2020). Main and interaction effects were evaluated and adjusted across candidate age, sex, and diagnosis. Models predicting PT survival were compared to the PT Composite Allocation Score model (PT-CAS): (1) Cox regression donor multivariable model (COX), (2) COX + PT-CAS, (3) random forest model (RF), and (4) RF + PT-CAS. The LouShao Basin in Hunan Province is covered with two sets of black rock series containing various potential toxic heavy metal elements. The rock series are rich in various potential toxic heavy metal elements, and the weathered black shale is the main formation of local farmland soil, making it a typical area with high geological background in China. The purpose of this study is to assess the regional ecological and health risks by studying the correlation between the content of heavy metal elements enriched in rhizosphere soil, non-rhizosphere soil, and crops, and the concentration of heavy metal elements in the main source, black shale rocks. The results show that the elements in the black shale far exceed the world average of rock, severely affecting soil element concentrations. Se element is the most severely polluted in rhizosphere soil, exceeding the background value by 7 times. The concentration of heavy metals between rock-non-rhizosphere soil-rhizosphere soil-crops decreases linearly. The distribution of pollution has strong spatial autocorrelation, and the high geological background is the main reason. Pollution index results show significant pollution of Se, Cr, Hg, and Cd in crops, with the pollution of heavy metal element Cr in corn being extremely serious with Igeo = 6.71. The ecological risk order is Se > Cd > Cr > As > Pb > Hg. Humans mainly contact elements through skin contact and food chain intake. The HI value of heavy metal element Cd is greater than 1, indicating a high carcinogenic risk. Human exposure to Cd through skin contact and food chain intake may lead to related diseases such as kidney stones, and pose greater harm to children.

This study determined the concentrations and seasonal variations of phthalate esters (PAEs) in water and sediment samples of the receiving stream within the vicinity of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife dumpsite. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pollution status of the study area by determining the levels of PAEs in water and sediment samples. This assessment aimed to understand the presence and extent of phthalate ester pollution in the study area. Water and sediment samples were collected from six selected stations along the receiving stream for analysis that included one upstream and five downstream points for four months during both wet season and dry season. The liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) method was employed to extract PAEs from the water samples collected, while microwave extraction method was optimized for their extraction in sediment samples. Quantification of the PAEs was conducted using Gas Chromatography coupled with a quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) in this study. The mean concentration of phthalates varied in the water and sediment samples. In the water samples, the phthalate concentrations ranged from 1.88 ± 0.16 μg/L for diethyl phthalate to 15.74 ± 0.33 μg/L for di(2-ethylhexyl phthalate) (DEHP). Also, butylbenzyl phthalate and DEHP will pose potential carcinogenic risks when used for bathing and drinking purposes, due to their relatively higher carcinogenic risk values. In the sediment samples, the concentrations ranged from 0.09 ± 0.02 mg/kg for dimethyl phthalate to 14.27 ± 1.76 mg/kg for di(2-ethylhexyl phthalate). The seasonal variation analysis of PAE congeners revealed that higher levels were observed during the dry season in the collected samples. The study concluded that the stream was heavily contaminated with di(-2-ethylhexyl)phthalate at levels that gave cause for human health and environmental concerns.

This study addresses the complexities of applying criminal law during public health emergencies, particularly under the shadow of scientific uncertainty, and explores the challenge of balancing public health protection with individual rights. The primary aim is to dissect the application of criminal law in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in China, focusing on the impact of scientific uncertainty on legal decision-making and the efficacy of criminal law interventions in public health crises. This study utilized a doctrinal method combined with case studies, integrating theoretical frameworks on risk and uncertainty with an analysis of China's legal responses to COVID-19. It involved assessing legislative and policy documents alongside judicial decisions, focusing on their alignment with evolving scientific understanding and public health strategies. The study reveals significant hurdles, including the limitations of empirical rules in judicial judgments, the emergence of technocratic bureaucracy, and the complexities surrounding risk mitigation and legal attribution under uncertain conditions. It highlights the inadequacy of traditional criminal law mechanisms to respond dynamically to the evolving landscape of public health emergencies. To address these challenges, the study recommends the development of temporary criminal legislation tailored to public health emergencies, the adoption of risk-based criminal law approaches, and the refinement of individualized risk assessment procedures. These measures aim to provide a more flexible and effective legal framework capable of safeguarding public health while ensuring the protection of individual liberties during crises.

Various indicators exist to assess the threat of chronic diseases. This paper presents new ones to evaluate the role of aging and non-aging factors for predicting threats from major chronic diseases. Age at zero mortality (AM0) and age at average mortality (AMa) can be calculated by regressing age and mortality (the intercept indicates AM0, the slope indicates the observed slope and r indicates random non-aging factors). A regression equation can be created using AMa at the age of 72 and mortality at the age of 82; thus, the expected slope can be obtained for the aging factor without considering non-aging factors. It is possible to distinguish between aging and non-aging factors using the observed and expected slopes, which should be multiplied by r to produce an index of aging (IA). The lower the AM0, AMa or IA of a disease is, the greater the threat it poses to a population. The AM0 and IA were calculated using data from China (2004 and 2019) for various diseases [cancer, heart disease (HD), cerebrovascular disease (CVD), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)]. We found the severity of threat was highest for cancer, CVD, other chronic diseases, HD and COPD in descending order in 2019. Heterogeneity and overuse of precautionary allergen labelling (PAL) in prepackaged foods have eroded its risk communication efficacy. Experts recommend applying PAL based on allergen concentration thresholds, but adoption remains limited. The aim of this study was to quantitatively assess the potential impact of this approach using Monte Carlo risk simulations. Four allergens and 9 food categories were considered in 2 scenarios: (1) consumption of products currently carrying PAL in Canada where individuals with food allergy (FA) are assumed to consume them, and (2) consumption of products without PAL, in a hypothetical context where PAL is applied based on thresholds that would protect 99 % (ED01) and 95 % (ED05) of individuals with FA, and individuals with FA systematically avoid products with PAL. In scenario (1), although several cases studied would cause 20 reactions/10 000 e.o. Cross-contact milk posed the highest risk (max. 1120 reactions/10 000 e.o.), and peanut, the least (max. 10 reactions/10 000 e.o.). In scenario (2), consumption of products without PAL, when using thresholds for PAL based on ED01, could lead to a maximum of 15 reactions/10 000 e. o. for all studied cases, and based on ED05, to 57 (if excluding dark chocolate with milk PAL). To assess the risk of food allergies in foods processed under the Japanese food labeling system, estimating exposure to hidden allergens is necessary. We assessed exposure to egg protein in foods processed according to the Japanese food labeling system. First, we estimated the concentration distribution of egg protein by Bayesian methods using data from the literature and the measurement of food products with precautional declarations in the labeling margin. We then estimated the food-intake portion-size distribution under two scenarios: soft drink consumption as an example of single, high-intake consumption, and confections, which are frequently consumed by children, as a realistic example of low-intake consumption. Finally, we estimated the distribution of unexpected intake of egg proteins in the form of single consumption. The mean exposure to egg protein under the high-intake scenario was estimated to be 0.0164 mg for 1–15-year-olds, 0.0171 mg for 4–15-year-olds, 0.0181 mg for 7–15-year-olds, and ≥0.0188 mg for 16-year-olds. The mean exposure to egg protein under the low-intake scenario was estimated to be 0.0018 mg for 1–15-year-olds, 0.0019 mg for 4–15-year-olds, 0.0020 mg for 7–15-year-olds, and ≥0.0022 mg for 16-year-olds. Compared to the reference dose of 2.0 mg proposed by the Joint the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)/World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Committee, the risk of onset of food allergies due to egg protein contamination from foods without egg labeling is considered to be extremely low under the current Japanese food labeling system.

Public concern about the effects of pesticides on non-target organisms has increased in the recent years. Nevertheless, there is a limited number of studies that address the actual toxic effects of herbicides on insects. This study investigated the side effects of herbicides on non-target organisms inhabiting agroecosystems and performing essential ecological and economic functions such as crop pollination. We analysed morphological alterations in the gut, Malpighian tubules and circulating haemocytes of Apis mellifera workers as markers of exposure effects. A commercial formulation of a pendimethalin-based herbicide (PND) was administered orally under laboratory conditions at a realistic concentration admitted in the field (330gL−1 of active ingredient., 4 L ha−1 for cereal and vegetable crops). The worker bees were exposed to a single application of PND for a period of one week, to simulate the exposure that can occur when foraging bees accidentally drink drops of contaminated water upon treatments. Histopathological analyses of the midgut, ileum and Malpighian tubules showed alterations over time (from 24 to 72 h after the beginning of exposure) such as loss of epithelial organisation, cellular vacuolisation and altered pyknotic nuclei as well as disruption of the peritrophic membrane over time. Semiquantitative analyses of the midgut showed a significant increase in the organ injury index 24 and 72 h after the initial exposure in PND-exposed bees compared to control bees. In addition, a change in positivity to Gram staining was observed in the midgut histological sections. A recovery of cytotoxic effects was observed one week after the initial exposure, which was favoured by the periodic renewal of the intestinal epithelium and the herbicide dissipation time. Cytochemical staining with Giemsa of haemocytes from PND-treated workers over 24 and 72 h showed significant nuclear alterations such as lobed or polymorphic nuclei and micronuclei compared to bees in the control group. These results show that the dose of PND used to protect crops from weeds can lead to significant cytotoxic and genotoxic effects in non-target organisms such as honey bees. In croplands, the sublethal effects on cell morphology can impair vital physiological processes such as nutrition, osmoregulation, and resistance to pathogens, contributing to the decline in biodiversity and abundance of species that play a prominent ecological role, such as pollinators.

A significant challenge in the traditional human health risk assessment of agrochemicals is the uncertainty in quantifying the interspecies differences between animal models and humans. To work toward a more accurate and animal-free risk determination, new approaches such as physiologically based kinetic (PBK) modeling have been used to perform dosimetry extrapolation from animals to humans. However, the regulatory use and acceptance of PBK modeling is limited for chemicals that lack in vivo animal pharmacokinetic (PK) data, given the inability to evaluate models. To address these challenges, this study developed PBK models in the absence of in vivo PK data for the fungicide propiconazole, an activator of constitutive androstane receptor (CAR)/pregnane X receptor (PXR). A fit-for-purpose read-across approach was integrated with hierarchical clustering − an unsupervised machine learning algorithm, to bridge the knowledge gap. The integration allowed the incorporation of a broad spectrum of attributes for analog consideration, and enabled the analog selection in a simple, reproducible, and objective manner. The applicability was evaluated and demonstrated using penconazole (source) and three pseudo-unknown target chemicals (epoxiconazole, tebuconazole and triadimefon). Applying this machine learning-enhanced read-across approach, difenoconazole was selected as the most appropriate analog for propiconazole. A mouse PBK model was developed and evaluated for difenoconazole (source), with the mode of action of CAR/PXR activation incorporated to simulate the in vivo autoinduction of metabolism. The difenoconazole mouse model then served as a template for constructing the propiconazole mouse model. A parallelogram approach was subsequently applied to develop the propiconazole rat and human models, enabling a quantitative assessment of interspecies differences in dosimetry. This integrated approach represents a substantial advancement toward refining risk assessment of propiconazole within the framework of animal alternative safety assessment strategies.

Biomass created by algae-based water purification has several potential applications outside the conventional energy, agriculture, and chemical industries. Herein, we use a specific type of algae, Enteromorpha intestinalis Ei, to remove significant metal ions. The Ei particles was converted into nanoparticles mechanically and their surface was chemically modified based on amino silane linker. The effect of utilizing dried Enteromorpha intestinalis nanoparticles, EiNPs, and silica-coated Enteromorpha intestinalis nanoparticles, Si-EiNPs, was examined for removing arsenic ions from an aqueous solution. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studied the chemical structure and shape of dry and silica-coated Enteromorpha intestinalis nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Batch experiments used the adsorbent dose, pH, temperature, contact time, and initial content of arsenic ion. The optimum conditions were exhibited by As3+ and As5+ concentrations of 10 ppm, contact time of 40 h, biosorbent dosage of 200 mg, Temperature 25 ± 1 °C, pH 6 for As3+ and pH 3 for As5+ and agitation rate 150 rpm. Thermodynamic experiments confirmed that the process is both spontaneous and exothermic. Kinetic models comprising pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion models were implemented to examine the adsorption process of arsenic ions on the surface of the studied nanoparticles. Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R), and Temkin isotherm models were examined to define equilibrium isotherms. However, the data were deemed to be better explained by the Freundlich isotherm model. The results indicate that the examined adsorbents, particularly EiNPs and Si-EiNPs, possess a strong capacity to adsorb and desorb arsenic ions, effectively purifying a contaminated effluent.

Ground collapse often occurs when strata are disturbed, particularly during tunnel construction, threatening the safety of people and underground facilities. Therefore, evaluating the risk of road collapse during and after tunnel construction is essential. Considering this, an improved entropy weight method was adopted to establish an evaluation system for assessing the collapse risk level of the Qianjin West Road, through which the Kunshan metro line S1 passes. The main implementation steps of the evaluation system include ten assessment indices, data visualization of indices, weight determination for indices, a cluster algorithm for the classification of results, and analysis of the evaluation results. In contrast to the traditional single method, and to improve the reliability of the risk assessment results, the method proposed in this paper considers two aspects. First, to eliminate subjective or objective biases generated by a single evaluation method, the entropy weight method (EM) and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) were integrated to formulate the improved entropy weight method. Second, to divide the evaluation results more reasonably, the k-means cluster algorithm using the Calinski Harabasz method was applied. The reliability and accuracy of the proposed improved entropy weight method are verified based on the case of Line S1. Furthermore, a method comparison and the concept of the coefficient of variation method were adopted to demonstrate the reliability of the risk assessment results. The improved entropy weight method can be used to evaluate ground collapse risk levels during and after tunnel construction.

Mass gathering events in Japan have gradually mitigated their novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) control regulations, along with a minimum infection risk. The Japan Professional Football League (J.League) conducted pilot surveys on holding events with chant cheers. In this commentary, we introduce the collaborative efforts based on scientific knowledge among experts, J.League, and their fans. We performed risk assessment in advance, by updating a previously developed model. We further observed the average proportion of masks worn, chant cheering time of participants, and CO2 levels in the stand. The number of new COVID-19 cases in an event with 5,000 chant cheering participants and 35,000 non-chant cheering participants was estimated to be 1.02 times of an event, with 40,000 non-chant cheering participants. The average proportion of masks worn during the game was 98.9 %, for chant cheer participants. The chant cheering participants spent 50.0–51.1 % of their time chant cheering. Monitored average CO2 levels were ≤ 540 ppm, suggesting high ventilation rates in the stand. The high proportion of masks worn represents the willingness of norm-conscious fans to cooperate in regular recovery of the sport. This has proved to be one of the successful models for future mass gathering events.

Nomograms help to predict outcomes in individual patients rather than whole populations and are an important part of evaluation and treatment decision making. Various nomograms have been developed in malignancies to predict and prognosticate clinical outcomes such as severity of disease, overall survival, and recurrence-free survival. In prostate cancer, nomograms were developed for determining need for biopsy, disease course, need for adjuvant therapy, and outcomes. Most of these predictive nomograms were based on Caucasian populations. Prostate cancer is significantly affected by race, and Asian men have a significantly different racial and genetic susceptibility compared to Caucasians, raising the concern in generalizability of these nomograms. We reviewed the existing literature for nomograms in prostate cancer and their application in Asian men. There are very few studies that have evaluated the applicability and validity of the existing nomograms in these men. Most have found significant differences in the performance in this population. Thus, more studies evaluating the existing nomograms in Asian men or suggesting modifications for this population are required.

To understand biosafety's current situation in laboratory animal research and risk factors affecting occupational health. Compliance surveys were conducted by questionnaire via Questionnaire Star (an application app on the Internet) in Chinese. Thirty-nine anonymous questionnaires were collected. The surveyed institution has established 24 types of ABSL (Animal Biosafety Laboratory) and biosafety management organizations and systems equipped with safety equipment. Our study also suggests that the principal of the laboratory establishment fails to perform supervision and inspection responsibilities, the inappropriate design of the animal biosafety laboratory, non-standardized personnel training and health management, non-strict waste management, and insufficient emergency management. The administrative department and work units should address certain safety and occupational health risks in laboratory animal research. The author proposes control strategies based on organizational guarantee, personnel management, emergency management, etc., to help prevent risks and ensure occupational health. Due to regional limitations and small sample size, the results may not be generalisable to all parts of the world. However, some of the key common issues may also be present in other regions, so we believe that this research still has some relevance.

Landslides, even shallow ones, can displace and destroy the fragile archaeological record. Therefore, it is essential to develop a comprehensive risk assessment and predict the sites at risk before a disaster, which this study aims to provide for 508 archaeological sites associated with Indus civilization and regional Chalcolithic cultures in Gujarat, India. As a hazard inventory for the study area is not available, this study integrates multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM), satellite remote sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) first to generate a landslide susceptibility map and then to use it for assessing the landslide risk of archaeological sites. Fifteen parameters, viz., elevation, slope, aspect, curvature, average rainfall, drainage density, Topographic Wetness Index (TWI), Stream Power Index (SPI), lithology, soil type, geomorphology, distance from lineaments, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Land Use Land Cover (LULC), and distance from roads were selected to determine susceptibility. The weights of each parameter were derived using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). The novelty of this study lies in the spatial overlay of the area of the sites and landslide susceptibility to measure the value loss of the archaeological sites. The results revealed that three of the 508 sites studied are at high risk, and 214 are at medium risk of landslides. With this proposed methodology, this study generates a new dataset on landslide susceptibility for the study area. In addition, it attempts to provide an integrated risk assessment framework for the archaeological sites in India that aids in identifying and mitigating risks.

Introduction: Patient satisfaction is important tool to monitor health care performance and quality of health plans, emphasizing effective counseling and consent processes. The objective of the study is to assess patient satisfaction and anxiety with the use of NSQIP surgical risk calculator in comparison to standardized questionnaires. Methodology: This is an interventional prospective randomized study. Difference in patient satisfaction is assessed by a 7-point Likert scale and anxiety assessment by 5-point Likert scale of Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) questionnaire written in Nepalese. Benzophenone ultraviolet light filters (BPs) are high-production-volume chemicals extensively used in personal care products, leading to widespread human exposure. Given their estrogenic properties, the potential health risks associated with exposure to BPs have become a public health concern. This review aims to summarize sources and pathways of exposure to BPs and associated health risks. Dermal exposure, primarily through the use of sunscreens, constitutes a major pathway for BP exposure. At a recommended application rate, dermal exposure of BP-3 via the application of sunscreens may reach or exceed the suggested reference dose. Other exposure pathways to BPs, such as drinking water, seafood, and packaged foods, contribute minimal to the overall dose. Inhalation is a minor pathway of exposure; however, its contribution cannot be ignored. Human exposure to BPs is an order of magnitude higher in North America than in Asia and Europe. Studies conducted on laboratory animals and cells have consistently demonstrated the toxic effects of BP exposure. BPs are estrogenic and elicit reproductive and developmental toxicities. Furthermore, neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and carcinogenicity have been reported from chronic BP exposure. In addition to animal and cell studies, epidemiological investigations have identified associations between BPs and couples' fecundity and other reproductive disorders, as well as adverse birth outcomes. Further studies are urgently needed to understand the risks posed by BPs on human health.

Risk assessment is a crucial component of collision warning and avoidance systems for intelligent vehicles. Reachability-based formal approaches have been developed to ensure driving safety to accurately detect potential vehicle collisions. However, they suffer from over-conservatism, potentially resulting in false–positive risk events in complicated real-world applications. In this paper, we combine two reachability analysis techniques, a backward reachable set (BRS) and a stochastic forward reachable set (FRS), and propose an integrated probabilistic collision–detection framework for highway driving. Within this framework, we can first use a BRS to formally check whether a two-vehicle interaction is safe; otherwise, a prediction-based stochastic FRS is employed to estimate the collision probability at each future time step. Thus, the framework can not only identify non-risky events with guaranteed safety but also provide accurate collision risk estimation in safety-critical events. To construct the stochastic FRS, we develop a neural network-based acceleration model for surrounding vehicles and further incorporate a confidence-aware dynamic belief to improve the prediction accuracy. Extensive experiments were conducted to validate the performance of the acceleration prediction model based on naturalistic highway driving data. The efficiency and effectiveness of the framework with infused confidence beliefs were tested in both naturalistic and simulated highway scenarios. The proposed risk assessment framework is promising for real-world applications.

الملخص: أهداف البحث: يتم تحويل إدارة تسوس الأسنان نحو طب الأسنان طفيف التوغل، واستراتيجيات أكثر تحفظا وقائمة على الأدلة. على الرغم من أن معظم مدارس طب الأسنان تبدأ في دمج استراتيجيات إدارة تسوس الأسنان طفيفة التوغل في مناهجها الدراسية؛ ليس معروفا جيدا ما إذا كان يتم تنفيذها في الممارسة اليومية. هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى تقييم معرفة وموقف أطباء الأسنان العاملين في منطقة المدينة المنورة في المملكة العربية السعودية فيما يتعلق بتطبيق طب الأسنان طفيف التوغل في إدارة تسوس الأسنان. طريقة البحث: أجريت دراسة مقطعية باستخدام استبانة إلكترونية بين أطباء الأسنان الممارسين في كل من العيادات الخاصة والعامة في المدينة المنورة، المملكة العربية السعودية. تتكون الاستبانة من 4 أقسام بما في ذلك البيانات الديموغرافية وتعليم الأسنان والخبرة السريرية والمعرفة والموقف فيما يتعلق بطب الأسنان طفيف التوغل وإدارة تسوس الأسنان. بالنسبة للتحليل الإحصائي، تم حساب إحصائيات وصفية بسيطة مثل التوزيعات المتوسطة والترددية؛ بينما تم إجراء المقارنات باستخدام اختبار كاي سكوير. النتائج: شارك في الدراسة ما مجموعه 130 طبيب أسنان، غالبيتهم من أطباء الأسنان السعوديين العامين العاملين في عيادات الأسنان الخاصة مع توزيع مماثل بين الذكور والإناث الذين تتراوح أعمارهم بين 25 و 35 سنة. فيما يتعلق بمعرفة إزالة التسوس الانتقائي، اختار 20 ٪ فقط أن إزالة التسوس الانتقائي يعتمد على عمق الآفة، بينما أجاب 74.6 ٪ أن تناسق الأسنان الملتهب مهم لإزالة التسوس الانتقائي. على الرغم من أن 60٪ كشفوا أنهم سيقيمون مخاطر تسوس المريض قبل بدء العلاج، إلا أن 11.5٪ فقط سيقومون بتقييم المخاطر والعلاج غير الجراحي في الزيارة الأولى لإدارة التسوس. يستخدم 4.6٪ فقط معايير النظام الدولي للكشف عن التسوس وتقييمه 2 في تشخيص تسوس الأسنان، بينما يستخدم 46.2٪ معايير ''جي في بلاك''. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، وافق 53.8٪ من المشاركين على أنه يجب إزالة التسوس بالكامل لوقف تقدم التسوس. الاستنتاجات: حصل أطباء الأسنان في المدينة المنورة على معرفة معقولة فيما يتعلق بأهمية طب الأسنان طفيف التوغل في إدارة تسوس الأسنان، لكنهم لا يطبقون بشكل كامل مفاهيم مثل تقييم مخاطر التسوس ومعايير تشخيص تسوس الأسنان الموصى بها مؤخرا في الممارسة السريرية اليومية. Abstract: Objective: Over time, the management of dental caries has shifted towards minimally invasive dentistry (MID) and more conservative and evidence-based strategies. Although most dental schools have begun to incorporate MID caries management strategies in their curriculum; it has yet to be established whether these strategies are being implemented in everyday practice. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the knowledge and attitude of dentists working in Almadinah Almunawwarah province in KSA with regards to the implementation of MID in caries management. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study which involved sending a self-administered and anonymous questionnaire to dentists practicing in both private and public clinics in Almadinah Almunawwarah, KSA. The questionnaire consisted of four sections: demographic data, dental education, clinical experience, and knowledge and attitude with regards to MID and the management of caries. For statistical analysis, we calculated simple descriptive statistics, including mean and frequency distributions; comparisons were performed using the Chi-squared test. Results: A total of 130 dentists participated in the study; the majority of respondents were Saudi general dentists working in private dental clinics; there was a similar distribution of males and females and the age of the dentists ranged from 25 to 35 years. With regards to knowledge relating to selective caries removal (SCR), only 20% of subjects responded that SCR is based on lesion depth, while 74.6% reported that carious dentin consistency is important for SCR. Although 60% of respondents reported that they would assess a patient's risk of caries before commencing treatment, only 11.5% would perform risk assessment and non-surgical treatment in the first visit for caries management. Only 4.6% reported that they used the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) II criteria for the diagnosis of caries while 46.2% used the G.V. Black criteria. In addition, 53.8% of participants agreed that caries must be completely removed to prevent the progression of caries. Conclusion: Dentists in Almadinah Almunawwarah province had reasonable levels of knowledge regarding the importance of MID in caries management. However, they did not fully implement certain concepts, such as caries risk assessment and the recently recommended criteria for the diagnosis of caries, in their everyday clinical practice.

Introduction: Nanotechnology is the science and engineering of nanoparticles whose dimensions range from 1 to 100 nm. Nanoparticles have special characteristics like increased surface area, high reactivity, and enhanced mechanical, thermal, and optical properties that make them attractive for use in dental applications. However, the use of nanoparticles in dental materials can have toxic effects on the human body. The objective of this paper is to discuss the toxic effects of various nanoparticles in dental materials, their adverse effect on human health, and measures to overcome such effects. Objectives: Nanoparticles are used in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of oral diseases like dental caries, pulpo periodontal lesions, oral cancer, denture stomatitis, and candidiasis. Exposure to nanoparticles may occur to the dental professional, and the patient during procedures like restoration, finishing, and polishing. Such exposure to nanoparticles through inhalation, and ingestion causes toxic effects in the lungs, skin, brain, liver, and kidney. Proper risk assessment methods and preventive measures may help reduce these toxic effects to some extent. Significance: Toxic effects of nanoparticles that are released during dental procedures, their route of exposure, and the concentration at which nanoparticles can induce toxic effects on the human body are discussed in detail in this review. The paper also aims to create awareness among dental professionals, students, and patients regarding nanoparticle exposure and its adverse effects, and methods to prevent and overcome these effects. Currently, it is ignored or taken lightly by the stakeholders and this review may throw light.

Objectives: Early identification of sarcopenia in patients with chronic liver disease is crucial for patient management and prevention of severe complications. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of Ishii score, Strength, Assistance with Walking, Rise from a Chair, Climb Stairs and Falls (SARC-F), SARC-F and Calf Circumference (SARC-CalF), and Mini Sarcopenia Risk Assessment-7 (MSRA-7) to screen sarcopenia in patients with chronic liver disease. Methods: This prospective study included patients with chronic liver disease in the infectious department of a tertiary hospital in Sichuan, China. Ishii score, SARC-F, SARC-CalF, and MSRA-7 were used to screen for sarcopenia risk. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the Asian Myometriosis Working Group (AWGS) 2019, which was used as the gold standard to compare the performance of the four screening tools. We completed clinical registration on the Chinese Clinical Trial Registration website (ChiCTR2100043910). Results: A total of 366 patients with chronic liver disease (22.4% women, mean age 48.96 ± 11.88 years) were evaluated. Based on the AWGS 2019 standard, the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with chronic liver disease was 17.5%. Among all participants, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) produced an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.82 for Ishii score (sensitivity 85.94%, specificity 78.15%), 0.53 for SARC-F (sensitivity 6.25%, specificity 99.34%), 0.64 for SARC-CalF (sensitivity 45.31%, specificity 83.11%), and 0.55 for MSRA-7 (sensitivity 87.50%, specificity 22.85%). Based on AUC, decision curve analysis, and calibration curves, we concluded that Ishii score was the most accurate screening tool and was superior to the other tools. Conclusions: Ishii score is more suitable for screening sarcopenia in patients with chronic liver disease than the SARC-F, SARC-CalF, and MSRA-7, based on the AWGS 2019 criteria. Nursing professionals can use Ishii score as a clinical tool to screen for sarcopenia in patients with chronic liver disease, providing an indication cue for the final diagnosis of sarcopenia, improving diagnostic efficiency, and enabling early identification and prevention of complications resulting from sarcopenia.
