Abstract: Canada's commercial seal hunt warrants close examination in that it is the largest kill of marine mammals on earth, it exists for commercial reasons, it targets deep diving seals with unique physical adaptations, and it is conducted in a particularly remote and uncontrolled environment amidst unstable sea ice and extreme weather conditions. For these reasons, commercial sealing in Canada has been the subject of regular veterinary scrutiny for more than five decades. In that time, despite repeated recommendations and some changes to the regulations, considerable evidence continues to be presented during each new season of poor welfare outcomes for seals. To add to the discussion we (Butterworth and Richardson) (2013) [1] reviewed multiple studies on commercial sealing, government reports, trade journal articles and recommendation reports, in an attempt to answer the question of why, despite the efforts of veterinary advisors and government to improve the situation, seals continue to die in inhumane ways. In examining the available evidence, the environment in which commercial sealing occurs, and the physical adaptations of seals, the authors concluded that generally accepted principles of humane slaughter cannot be implemented effectively and consistently in the context of commercial sealing. Spinal cord compression is a source of pathology routinely seen in clinical practice. However, there remain unanswered questions surrounding both the understanding of pathogenesis and the best method of treatment. This arises from limited real-life testing of the mechanical properties of the spinal cord, either through cadaveric human specimens or animal testing, both of which suffer from methodological, as well as ethical, issues. To conduct a review of the literature on the mechanical properties of the spinal cord. A systematic review of the literature on the mechanical properties of the spinal cord is undertaken. All literature reporting the testing of the mechanical properties of the spinal cord. Reported physiological mechanical properties of the spinal cord. The methodological quality of the studies has been assessed within the ARRIVE guidelines using the CAMARADES framework and SYRCLE's risk of bias tool. This paper details the methodologies and results of the reported testing. We show that (1) the research quality of previous work does not follow published guidelines on animal treatment or risk of bias, (2) no standard protocol has been employed for sample preparation or mechanical testing, (3) this leads to a wide distribution of results for the tested mechanical properties, not applicable to the living human or animal, and (4) animal testing is not a good proxy for human application. The findings summarize the sum of current knowledge inherent to the mechanical properties of the spinal cord and may contribute to the development of a physical model which is applicable to the living human for analysis and testing in a controlled and repeatable fashion. Lameness is a significant health and welfare issue in farmed animals. This paper uses a governmentality approach, which focuses on how a problem is made governable, to examine an emerging 'ecology of devices' introduced to intervene in, and attempt to reduce, on-farm incidence of lameness. These devices are associated with advisers who work with farmers on-farm; they enact lameness as a governable entity, are tools to assess the existence of lameness against established norms, and prescribe actions to be taken in response to evidence of lameness. In doing this they subjectify farmers and advisers into seeing and responding to lameness in particular ways. Using concepts of governmentality alongside other perspectives on the power relations and the simplifications and complexities involved in interventions in animal health and farm practice, the paper draws on in-depth research with advisers including vets and other paraprofessionals who work with farmers, and their cows and sheep. It explores how this set of devices introduces particular techniques and practices in lameness management, and produces farmer and adviser subjectivities. It then explores some of the problematics of this mode of governing lameness, including analysis of the limitations and unintended consequences of attempts to simplify lameness management. We delved into the multifaceted advancements such as the utilization of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for behavior analysis and health monitoring, evidenced by the high accuracy sorting of eggs and identification of health concerns within target-dense farm environments. The review paper underscores advancements in precision agriculture, including accurate egg weight estimation and egg classification within cage-free systems, paralleling the poultry sector's evolution towards more ethical farming practices. Moreover, it addresses the progress in poultry growth monitoring and examines case studies of commercial farms, showcasing how these innovations are being practically applied to enhance productivity and animal welfare. Challenges remain, particularly in terms of environmental variability and data annotation for deep learning models. Nevertheless, the review emphasizes the scope for future innovations like voice-controlled robotics and virtual reality applications, which have the potential to enhance poultry farming to new levels of efficiency, humanity, and sustainability. The insights assert that the continued exploration and development in computer vision technologies are not only instrumental for the poultry sector but also offer a blueprint for agricultural enhancement at large. Environmental crises and agricultural policy reforms are key moments for the reorganisation of farming practices, which can contribute to the reconstitution of female farming roles and identities. In this paper, we consider the role of animal disease in providing an opportunity to reconstitute female farming identities, particularly emphasising female farm employees. Focusing on the careers and labour of calf rearers, the paper shows how calf rearing identities are structured and contested, and linked to cultures of care that are shaped by patriarchal farming relations. Drawing on 25 biographical interviews, the paper reveals four distinct narratives of calf rearing: natural born carers, rescue, taking back control, and from outsider to insider. Despite significant changes to the organisation of animal health and welfare for calves, these narratives reveal the marginal status of both calves and calf rearers. Calf rearers' labour of care encompasses both affectual attachments to calves but also family and farm relationships, reflecting how careful rearing is configured by the material and cultural relations of farming. Whilst some calf rearers have been able to challenge these relationships and reconstitute calf rearing identities, the narratives suggest that calf rearers lack agency to change animal health practices. Dairy cattle typically live in groups, but individuals within these groups vary in their social behavior. An improved understanding of factors affecting the expression of social behavior may help refine management practices on farms to better accommodate the needs of all individuals within the herd. In this paper, we review (1) some examples of how social behavior is expressed in cattle, (2) commonly assessed personality traits in this species (i.e., sociability and fearfulness) as well as coping style, and (3) how these can affect the expression of social behavior of dairy cattle and in turn their welfare. We also identify understudied social behaviors that personality might influence (social learning, social stress, and social buffering of negative emotions), and that could inform how to improve the welfare of intensively housed dairy cattle. "Choice and control" is a phrase used widely in animal welfare science to describe providing captive animals with the ability to select between possible outcomes (stimuli or events). This concept has gained traction as a pivotal management technique across a variety of captive settings; however, little has been done to quantitatively evaluate choice as a welfare-improving practice. Our goal was to use a PRISMA framework to identify and review the current empirical literature on the welfare effects of choice provisions by examining measurable behavioural and biological outcomes. We evaluated choice-based studies which used an experiment design to compare choice to non-choice conditions and the impact of choice on welfare. Covidence software was used to screen and extract data from peer-reviewed literature identified across PubMed, Web of Science Advanced, and Scopus Advanced databases. Study inclusion was contingent upon a methodology which offered options for at least two or more stimuli/events given concurrently and which also contrasted a choice condition to a non-choice condition. A total of 13 papers were identified and included in this review. The majority of the papers included choices associated with enclosure access, food, and enrichment devices which resulted in improved behavioral and physiological welfare indicators across zoological, agricultural, and research laboratory settings. However, the presence of a couple papers reporting unclear or neutral impacts highlighted the need for further empirical research into the welfare impacts of choice. Increased experimental examinations with a wider range of captive settings and species are discussed and considered necessary to better comprehend the welfare benefits of providing increased choice opportunities for captive animals. Using a 2 × 2 factorial design, 48 litters of pigs were raised in either a conventional farrowing crate (FC) or a loose farrowing pen (LP ; PigSAFE pen) which was larger, more physically complex and allowed the sow to move freely. Piglets were provided with either routine contact from stockpeople (C), or routine contact plus regular opportunities for positive human contact (+HC) involving 5 min of scratching, patting and stroking imposed to the litter 5 days/week from 0 to 4 weeks of age. At 4 weeks of age, piglets were weaned and re-housed with controlled mixing of litters within treatment. At 4 days of age, after only 3 bouts of the handling treatment, +HC pigs showed less escape behaviour than C pigs after capture by a stockperson for vaccinations and tail docking, and shorter durations of vocalisations throughout the procedures. The +HC pigs also showed less escape behaviour when captured by a stockperson at 3 weeks of age. The FC pigs showed less escape behaviour than LP pigs after capture by a stockperson at 4 days of age but not at 3 weeks of age. Serum cortisol concentrations were lower in FC pigs than LP pigs 2 h after weaning but not at 49 h after weaning, whereas serum cortisol concentrations were lower in +HC pigs than C pigs at 49 h after weaning but not at 2 h after weaning. In the period from 0 to 1 h after weaning, C pigs from LP performed the most escape attempts, although escape attempts were rare overall. When being moved out of the home pen by a stockperson at 21 weeks of age, FC pigs showed less baulking than LP pigs, but there were no detected effects of human contact treatment. In conclusion, both housing system and human contact during lactation affected the stress responses of pigs to routine husbandry practices. The +HC and FC pigs appeared to cope better than C and LP pigs, based on lower responses indicative of stress including escape behaviour, vocalisations and cortisol concentrations. Piglets were provided with either routine contact from stockpeople (C), or routine contact plus regular opportunities for positive human contact (+HC) involving 5 min of scratching, patting and stroking imposed to the litter 5 days/week from 0 to 4 weeks of age. At 4 weeks of age (preweaning), C piglets that were reared in FC had considerably lower concentrations of serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) than piglets from the other treatment combinations. Compared to C pigs, +HC pigs had fewer injuries at 4 weeks of age. There were no clear effects of human contact on BDNF concentrations or injuries after weaning, or on basal cortisol or immunoglobulin-A concentrations, behavioural time budgets, tear staining, growth, or piglet survival. Compared to FC piglets, LP piglets showed more play behaviour and interactions with the dam and less repetitive nosing towards pen mates during lactation. There was no evidence that early housing affected pigs' behavioural time budgets or physiology after weaning. Tear staining severity was greater in LP piglets at 4 weeks of age, but this may have been associated with the higher growth rates of LP piglets preweaning. There was no effect of lactation housing on growth after weaning. Preweaning piglet mortality was higher in the loose system. The findings on BDNF concentrations, injuries and play behaviour suggest improved welfare during the treatment period in +HC and LP piglets compared to C and FC piglets, respectively. These results together with those from the other papers in this series indicate that positive human interaction early in life promotes stress adaptability in pigs. Furthermore, while the farrowing crate environment deprives piglets of opportunities for play behaviour and sow interaction, there was no evidence that rearing in crates negatively affected pig welfare or stress resilience after weaning. Using a 2 × 2 factorial design, 48 litters of pigs were reared in either a conventional farrowing crate (FC) where the sow was confined or a loose farrowing pen (LP ; PigSAFE pen) which was larger, more physically complex and allowed the sow to move freely throughout the farrowing and lactation period. Piglets were provided with either routine contact from stockpeople (C), or routine contact plus regular opportunities for positive human contact (+HC) involving 5 min of scratching, patting and stroking imposed to the litter 5 days/week from 0–4 weeks of age. The positive handling treatment was highly effective in reducing piglets' fear of humans, based on +HC piglets showing greater approach and less avoidance of an unfamiliar person at 3 weeks of age. There was evidence that this reduction in fear of humans lasted well beyond when the treatment was applied (lactation), with +HC pigs showing greater approach and less avoidance of humans in tests at 6, 9 and 14 weeks of age. The +HC treatment also reduced piglets' fear of a novel object at 3 weeks of age, and for pigs in FC, the cortisol response after social isolation at 7 weeks of age. Rearing in FC compared to LP reduced piglets' fear of novelty at 3 weeks of age, as well as their vocalisations and cortisol response to isolation at 7 weeks of age. The FC pigs showed greater approach and less avoidance of humans compared to LP pigs at 3, 4 and 6 weeks of age, but not at 9 and 14 weeks of age. These results show that positive handling early in life can reduce pigs' fear of humans, fear of novelty and physiological stress response to social isolation. The LP pigs were reared in a more isolated environment with less overall contact with stockpeople and other pigs, which may have increased their fear responses to humans and novel situations, suggesting that different housing systems can modulate these pigs' responses. International agreements have been adopted in recent years to disseminate animal welfare standards worldwide, similar to the situation for environmental and social sustainability standards. Scholars who have analyzed such initiatives argue that this calls for contextualized strategies for a successful implementation of international animal welfare standards in specific settings, also emphasizing the relevance of individuals and institutions who function as intermediaries in these complex situations of change. However, previous studies do not provide empirical insights into how different intermediaries work in relation to international animal welfare standards implementation in national contexts. Focusing empirically on the implementation of EU animal welfare directives in Brazilian pig production, this paper aims to connect the standards implementation and intermediation literatures to deepen the understanding of how a network of intermediaries formed and acted as an 'ecology of intermediaries' to facilitate the implementation process for international animal welfare standards. The paper aims to enrich debates on how to develop contextualized strategies that can translate recognized international regulations into practical animal welfare improvements. Our findings provide evidence that collective intermediation efforts are pivotal in addressing demands (such as translation, adaptation, regulation) that emerge from the complex situation of change provoked by the implementation of international animal welfare standards in national contexts. Arnold Arluke and Clinton Sanders (1996) have argued that human societies index both humans and animals as belonging to particular rungs of the social hierarchy. They term this multispecies ranking the "sociozoological scale". This paper will investigate how claims at the 1875 Royal Commission on Vivisection about the sensitivity of particular species and breeds not only reflected assumptions about human social hierarchy but also blurred the boundaries between the human and the animal in the process. It will further be shown how these claims were informed by 18th and 19th century humanitarianism, classism, scientific racism and evolutionary theory, and how these influences combined in claims-making about the relative capacity of particular animals to sense pain and ethical duties towards them that followed from this sensitivity. Particular attention will be given to the opposing efforts of commissioners Thomas Henry Huxley and Richard Holt Hutton to demarcate human and animal sensitivity and exempt companion animals from vivisection respectively. The paper concludes by considering the sociozoological orders constituted by the 1876 Cruelty to Animals Act, particularly through its focus on calculating pain, and the legacy and limitations of this constitution. Meat production has always attracted the attention of animal welfare organizations and production processes often raise ethical concerns. By conducting a bibliometric analysis of Kosher meat production according to deep-rooted Jewish tradition, the aim of this paper is to emphasize the sustainable aspects of the production process taking the main pillars of food security into consideration. The bibliometric analysis investigates numerous documents and authors that have focused on kosher meat production, their main content, and the extent to which these works contribute to scientific production on the topic under investigation. In particular, the paper seeks to explore the connection between kosher meat and the production process in order to map its conceptual structure. Periodically, the topic of defining rural is addressed within rural social science scholarship but done so in overwhelmingly human terms. This paper engages with this observation, arguing the simple but axiomatic point that the rural is not solely a human taxonomic creation but expresses a space that integrally and intimately involves the more-than-human. Consequently, the latter should be strongly, firmly and richly represented up-front within the defining rural debate. Adopting an established if, to date, still anthropocentricised three-fold model of rural space, the paper argues that each dimension – localities, representations, lives – feature the more-than-human in both passive and active ways. Overall, bringing more-than-human perspectives much further to the fore consolidates the idea of rural as inherently co-produced, a 'baroque assemblage' containing many more-than-human living things. Accounts of animals within such a rural must recognise their emplacing from a diversity of foci, interests and consequences. The paper begins to introduce details of this diverse co-production with respect to one ubiquitous rural animal, the sheep. It illustrates the 'ensheeping' of rural localities, representations and lives, with the practical significance of this brought together and drawn out through two rival accounts of sheep within the Lake District National Park. The literature examining farmers' views of animal welfare is dominated by the study of cognitive and attitudinal factors. This overlooks how cultural processes can inform what farmers do and why they may be resistant to change when it comes to animal welfare. This paper applies the concept of the "good farmer" to explore how farmers' approaches to welfare are also informed by cultural processes and farmer identity. A more-than-representational lens was applied to an interview study of Scottish livestock farmers (n = 28). This illuminated a set of shared practices and principles idealised by farmers as indicative of good welfare and symbolic of a "good farmer": care of the animal's physical body, care of the animal's physical environment, health management, happy–content animals, stock-keeping skills, objective decision-making, and animal productivity. Dietary choices contribute to one's environmental footprint and shape social identity. Evidence suggests that adopting plant-based diets (i.e., vegetarianism and veganism) may solve some environmental, health, and animal welfare issues. Yet, this decision leads to the formation of a social identity and out-group bias referred to as "vegephobia". In this paper, I provide a first measure of the presence of vegephobia using social preferences in an online experimental economic environment. I estimate inequity aversion parameters of omnivore dictators (i.e., meat eaters) contingent on their matched partner's dietary identity and test for the presence of vegephobia (pre-registered hypotheses). I also elicit recipients' expectations of discriminatory behaviors. Confirmatory results reject the presence of vegephobia in the economic environment. Further exploratory results reveal some vegephobia driven by the dictators' personal characteristics and social environments. Paradoxically, vegans report experiencing vegephobia outside of the experimental setup but expect pro-social choices from out-group members in the experiment. Farmers are increasingly required to record the actions taken and incidents occurring at farms. They are also expected to use the records to prove that animal welfare and environmental regulations are being followed. Yet, research suggests that record keeping disturbs, rather than supports, farming practices. The policy benefits are also suspected to be scarce. In this paper, we argue that the potential of records to act as useful calculative resources has been overlooked. The Finnish case study shows that recording nutrient use can allow fertilisation practices to be guided by water protection concerns. However, on some farms the requirement to keep nutrient records has been responded in ways that draws a distance between farms and regulatory control. The alignment of farm life and the recording requirements has followed different trajectories from one farm to another. Some farmers contest the science behind the fertilisation limits. Farms may also be poorly equipped to live with the limits that the records make visible. Optimal fertilisation then ceases to be an issue that can be solved by additional calculative support. Separation of calves from cows within hours or days of birth is common on dairy farms. Stakeholders have conflicting perspectives on whether this practice is harmful or beneficial for the animals' welfare and production. Our objective was to critically evaluate the scientific evidence for both acute and long-term effects of early separation versus an extended period of cow–calf contact. The outcomes investigated were the behavior, welfare (excluding physical health), and performance (milk yield and growth, respectively) of dairy cows and calves. Primary research papers were found through targeted Web of Science searches, the reference lists of recent reviews for each topic, and the reference lists of papers identified from these sources. Studies were included if they were published in English, the full text was accessible, and they compared treatments with and without contact between dairy cows and calves for a specified period. Early separation (within 24 h postpartum) was found to reduce acute distress responses of cows and calves. However, longer cow–calf contact typically had positive longer-term effects on calves, promoting more normal social behavior, reducing abnormal behavior, and sometimes reducing responses to stressors. In terms of productivity, allowing cows to nurse calves generally decreased the volume of milk available for sale during the nursing period, but we found no consistent evidence of reduced milk production over a longer period. Allowing a prolonged period of nursing increased calf weight gains during the milk-feeding period. In summary, extended cow–calf contact aggravates the acute distress responses and reduces the amount of saleable milk while the calves are suckling, but it can have positive effects on behaviors relevant to welfare in the longer term and benefit calf growth. The strength of these conclusions is limited, however, given that relatively few studies address most of these effects and that experimental design including timing of contact and observations are often inconsistent across studies. This paper responds to claims that smallholders in the UK farming landscape present a biosecurity threat to commercial farming, by exploring smallholders' perspectives on animal health and their practising of biosecurity, studied through focus group research in England. Biosecurity in animal agriculture has emerged as a key research theme, with attention paid to how biosecurity is both conceptualised and practised in different farming situations. Biosecurity, as an effort to make life safe, is viewed as an articulation of political and scientific discourses with on-farm practices and particular farming and food systems. The paper draws on recent theorisation of biosecurity to discuss smallholders' engagement with the health of their animals and with biosecurity practices, and to explore their relationships with vets and commercial farmers. Contesting representations of themselves and their practices as bioinsecure, smallholders instead contend that commercial farmers and farming produce more risky disease situations, and that smallholding fosters relationships of care and response-ability more likely to engender animal health and welfare. At the same time, smallholders and farmers are involved in attempts to piece together a practical biosecurity under different pressures. This review paper aims to provide an overview on effects of incubation temperature changes in early (week 1), mid-term (week 2) and late (week 3) embryogenesis on broiler muscle and bone development, and subsequent locomotory ability. A novelty in this paper is the discussion of the possible effect of incubation temperature manipulation on the welfare of broilers. Muscle tissue responds to increased temperatures during embryogenesis by proliferation, but this effect depends on the timing, as embryonic muscle development relies on the expression of regulatory factors and cell lines occurring at specific time points. Furthermore, breast and leg muscles respond differently, especially when different timings of temperature manipulation are compared. Leg bone growth seems to be promoted by increased incubation temperature, but the effect cannot clearly be separated from overall embryo growth. Data on the influence of the incubation profile on bone strength and mineralisation is limited and suggests a positive effect of higher temperature in mid-term embryogenesis, but not when applied over extensive periods. The reflection of the changes in bone and muscle development on walking ability has not been widely studied but a beneficial effect is possible due to the effect on muscle and overall body growth. Concluding, further studies to establish proper timing and temperature enabling beneficial changes in the muscle fibres and bones for improved walking ability are needed. Farmers are often reluctant to adopt sustainable agricultural practices despite a thorough formal regulatory framework combating unsustainable behaviour. To date, the literature in this area has largely focused on the behavioural aspects of decision-making, with an emphasis on monetary compensation. This paper is an exploratory attempt to develop a new theory for farmers' adoption decisions of sustainable agricultural practices that takes into account both its enablers and its barriers. With an exploratory position, the case of Germany is used as a seminal context for building this new theory that we refer to as the Rules-Boundaries-Behaviours (RBB) framework. The basis for the development of the theory is a systematic literature review taking into account 48 peer-reviewed articles published between 1995 and 2021. The RBB framework illustrates that farmers' behavioural factors are restricted by boundary conditions (limitations in the personal, farm, farm operation, and environmental spheres), and that these behavioural and boundary conditions are contextually embedded in a complex in/formal rule space. This paper analyzes and questions the standard welfare economics assumption of anthropocentric welfarism , i.e., that only human well-being counts intrinsically. Alternatives where also animal welfare matters intrinsically are analyzed both theoretically and empirically. The general public's ethical preferences are measured through a survey of a representative sample in Sweden, and the responses from a clear majority suggest that animal welfare should indeed carry intrinsic weight in public decision making. Current legislation in many countries is consistent with this. A brief review of moral philosophy on animal welfare indicates that a large majority of philosophers believe that animal welfare should count intrinsically. It is moreover demonstrated that it is theoretically and practically possible to generalize welfare economics in order to give intrinsic value also to animal welfare. The paper concludes that there are strong reasons to (sometimes) generalize welfare economics in order to take animal welfare into account directly, i.e., in addition to effects through individual utilities. Digestive diseases are common poultry diseases that significantly affect production and animal welfare. Early warning of digestive disease outbreaks is essential in poultry breeding. In conventional cage laying hen systems, breeders usually spend 1–2 days randomly selecting hens for health assessment. This process is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and may cause stress to the hens, which goes against animal welfare principles. In this paper, a model structure was proposed to locate the cage of sick hens based on manure images using digital image processing and deep learning. Abnormal features of poultry manure was extracted using the YOLOv5 and combined with the motion information of the manure belt estimated by the SuperPoint-SuperGlue model to construct an early warning and traceability system for diseases in a layered cage farming mode. This system enables the automatic detection and traceability of digestive diseases in layer-raised hens. The results showed that YOLOv5 can effectively recognize abnormal chicken manure with precision rate, recall rate, mAP@0.5 and mAP@[0.5:0.95] of 95.7 %, 95.4 %, 98.1 % and 84.3 %. The SuperPoint-SuperGlue model demonstrated strong data fitting capabilities and remarkable robustness in long-distance monitoring of manure belt movement, with MAE, RMSE, and MAPE values of 0.19 m, 0.14 m, and 0.34 %, respectively. After combining the SuperPoint-SuperGlue with a self-designed error correction module, the traceability accuracy of the model was validated through 48 field tests, achieving a correct tracing rate of 91.6 %. These research results can be used for providing early warnings of digestive system diseases in caged chickens, providing a prerequisite for the development of intelligent disease diagnostic equipment. In cattle, facial temperatures captured by infrared thermography provide useful information from physiological aspects for researchers and local practitioners. Traditional temperature collection requires massive manual operations on relevant software. Therefore, this paper aimed to propose a tool for automated temperature collection from cattle facial landmarks (i.e., eyes, muzzle, nostrils, ears, and horns). An improved UNet was designed by replacing the traditional convolutional layers in the decoder with Ghost modules and adding Efficient Channel Attention (ECA) modules. The improved model was trained on our open-source cattle infrared image dataset. The results show that Ghost modules reduced computational complexity and ECA modules further improved segmentation performance. The improved UNet outperformed other comparable models on the testing set, with the highest mean Intersection of Union of 80.76% and a slightly slower but still good inference speed of 32.7 frames per second. Further agreement analysis reveals small to negligible differences between the temperatures obtained automatically in the areas of eyes and ears and the ground truth. Collectively, this study demonstrates the capacity of the proposed method for automated facial temperature collection in cattle infrared images. The present paper was designated to assess the perceived frequency of problematic rabbit behavior in a sample of pet rabbit owners and to characterize this behavior. For this purpose, a questionnaire was administered to 423 rabbit owners from Spain and Latin America. The collected data was processed descriptively and using multiple correspondence analysis (MCA). Results indicated that, among the studied population, the most common behavior problems according to owners' perception were inappropriate elimination followed by non-social fear, destructive behavior and compulsive disorders. Rabbits generally showed more than just one behavioral problem; there seemed to be an association between non-social fear and destructive behavior as well as between owner-directed aggression and owner-directed fear. MCA indicated that the studied behavior problems were more frequent in entire females. Rabbits acquired before weaning and, to a lesser extent, between weaning and puberty were more likely to show compulsive disorders and inappropriate urine elimination. These two behavior problems seemed to be also more common in rabbits from breeders and pet stores. In this systematic review, we assessed different studies to evaluate the protective effect of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), as a multifaceted antioxidant, on sperm functions in rodent models. Four databases were searched to find papers reporting the effect of ALA treatment on animal models of male infertility. Up to December 2022, 11,787 articles were identified to explain the ALA protective effects. The included studies were evaluated for eligibility and risk of bias (CRD42022341370). Finally, we identified 23 studies that explain the effect of ALA on sperm functions in rodents. Among them, 15 studies indicated that ALA could restore sperm parameters. Six studies showed a significant reduction in sperm DNA damage by ALA treatment. Seventeen papers displayed the ALA antioxidant ability, and four studies indicated the ALA anti-inflammatory effect. Besides, thirteen studies displayed that ALA could modulate androgenesis. Also, eighteen studies revealed that ALA restored the testicular architecture to normal, and was also effective in restoring reproductive performance in two included studies. This systematic review provided cogent evidence for the protective effect of ALA in rodent models for male infertility by re-establishing spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis and maintaining redox and immune systems homeostasis. The advent of the open access (OA) movement in publishing has been instrumental in causing a shift in the accessibility of research findings published in academic journals. The adoption of OA and other online publication models means that the results of scientific research published in journals using a free access (FA) framework are now available, free of charge, to anyone with access to the Internet. FA journals typically require a payment from the authors of a manuscript, which has raised concerns about the quality of work published in them; accepting payment from an author may compromise a journal's acceptance criteria. This study addresses whether journal policy on the treatment of animals is influenced by whether a journal follows a FA publishing model, and whether a requirement to pay for publication has an influence. A random sample of 332 biomedical journals listed in the ISI Web of Knowledge and Directory of Open Access Journals databases were assessed for whether they had an ethical policy on publishing animal studies, and what form of publication framework they used (103 of the journals followed a FA framework; 101 charged in some way for publication). Only 135 (40.7%) of the journals surveyed demanded that submissions comply with a pre-defined ethical stance. FA journals are just as likely to have an ethical policy on the treatment and presentation of animal studies as 'traditional', non-FA journals (significance of there being a difference: P=0.98), and there is no relationship between policy and whether an author is required to pay for publication (significance of there being a difference: P=0.57). Older journals are more likely to have an ethical policy (P=0.03). There is, therefore, no obvious compromise shown by FA journals in the explicit policies on reporting studies involving animals. However, since anyone can read published FA studies online, FA journals that do not have an explicit policy about publishing animal research are urged to consider adopting one. Vocalization and other behavior signals are used as tools to assess animal welfare in beef calves. This paper aimed to compare vocal parameters and behavior signals expressed by beef calves submitted either to ear tagging procedure for identification (Effective Tagging - ET) or to a human touch on the ears (Simulated Tagging - ST), considering calf sex and age. A total of 52, 30 male and 22 female, 91.3 ± 28.1 d-old taurine beef calves participated in the study, in Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil. Calves were randomly divided into two treatments (ET and ST) and recorded for 1 minute after the beginning of the stimulus for both ET and ST situations, as this was the total time animals were restrained. We analysed the immediate vocal and behavioral responses to the procedure, following regular handling procedures used on the farm. Vocal data was further analysed using specific audacity software and behavioral signs were counted. More animals in the ET treatment vocalized during the trial (14 and 5 calves, respectively), with a higher average number of vocal calls (1.7 and 0.3 calls/animal), as well as of head movements (7.8 and 4.0 movements), tail flapping (56.1 and 29.8) and leg movements (28.4 and 16.4). Male vocalizations were longer than female (2.07 and 1.61 s), with higher fundamental frequency (249.6 and 178.6 Hz). Additionally, older calves vocalized with higher fundamental frequency (241.0 and 212.8 Hz) and showed more head movements (6.5 and 5.3 occurrences) than younger ones. The results suggest that the vocalization characteristics associated with other behavior signals may be used as tools to assess pain in beef calves during invasive procedures such as identification handling. Society and animal professionals are increasingly concerned about the pain management during routine husbandry procedures in farm animals. In this paper, we aim to identify the factors that affect Brazilian veterinarians' and animal scientists' perceptions about the level of pain cattle experience during castration and horn removal. An online survey was conducted with these professionals, resulting in a sample size of 147 participants. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Chi-squares tests, Fisher exact tests, and Mann-Whitney U tests. The results of descriptive statistics showed that the most frequently, the most and the least painful technique quoted, for castration, was scalpel, burdizzo, and immunocastration, respectively; and for horn removal, hot iron (for newborn and suckled calves) and saw/wires (for adult cattle), knife, and caustic paste, respectively. Women assessed cattle pain higher than men professionals for castration in newborn calves. Higher mean scores for the pain perception were associated to painful indicators: heart and/or respiration rate during castration in newborn and suckled calves; and defensive movements during horn removal in adult cattle. Those respondents who were more likely to perceived high level of pain also scored higher pain for (i) newborn calves when toxic agent or immunocastration were used to castrate; (ii) suckled calves dehorned/disbudded with chemical methods or dehorners; and (iii) all cattle ages when surgical methods or burdizzo were used for castration and amputation techniques or hot iron, for horn removal. Professionals that perceived higher level of pain in both painful procedures agreed more with the statements "Farm animals are not as sensitive to pain as pets" and "If there are no defensive movements, there is no need for pain mitigation use" than those that perceived lower level of pain. The pain estimation is subjective, but our results illustrate the importance of the management and individual/professional aspects on pain perception. The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the market potential of pork labelled to indicate medium and high levels of animal welfare. The paper asks, in particular, whether there is a risk that Danish consumers will abandon high level welfare pork if less expensive products with a medium level of animal welfare became available. The study was based on an online questionnaire with a choice experiment involving 396 Danish respondents. The results indicated that the Danish market could accommodate more than one pork product with a welfare label but the price differential separating medium and high level animal welfare pork will have to be quite narrow. In addition, full willingness-to-pay of consumers who want to buy high level welfare pork cannot be relied upon to incentivise new consumers to buy medium welfare pork. At all times prior to arrival at the slaughter plant, pigs may experience stress from a range of on-farm handling practices. The quality of the design of the loading facilities and of the handling procedures plays a key role in determining the effects of the farm on pig response to preslaughter stress, as it may contribute to improve to reduce the load time, the staff workload and stress in pigs. Poor handling management will impair pigs' movement during loading, leading to rougher handling and stressful experiences, and ultimately reduced welfare. Thus, this paper overviews the effects of on-farm handling management factors during loading that may influence the response of pigs to pre-slaughter stress. In addition, this paper provides recommendations on how to sort and move pigs to the loading dock and into the truck. Handling practices (tools, group size, use of shipping pens, mixing) and physical features of the barn, such as light and sound, and alley and exit design (length, width and shape) will be examined. Shifts in protein production methods are an emerging challenge toward realizing a sustainable society. This paper aims to examine preferences among Japanese consumers regarding attributes of beef mince and its substitutes, to develop consumer segments based on these preferences, and to explore the segment with higher acceptance of replacement from conventional products. This paper also aims to explain intersegment differences from consumer heterogeneity in human values, scientific literacy, and sociodemographic viewpoints for a deeper understanding of consumer behavior in each segment. The results of an online choice experiment involving 4421 consumers in Japan, using food labels on mince showed that Japanese-origin organic beef was associated with the highest utility among the five production methods mentioned. Five consumer segments were identified with latent class analysis: novelty accepters , generous customers , attribute-economy balancers , price – conscious , and conservatives , which vary in preference in choice behavior, sociodemographic, human values, and scientific literacy. The combined contamination of multiple mycotoxins (MTs) is a matter of utmost concern, posing significant threats to both the economy stability and the well-being of humans and animals. Consequently, there is an urgent demand for highly sensitive and portable multiplex detection methods to effectively identify and quantify MTs. The primary objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of the methods to detect multiple MTs in agricultural products, including instrumental and biosensor approaches published in the last five years. Specifically, we emphasize detection methods for antibody (ab)- and aptamer (apt)-based biosensors, while undertaking a comparative analysis of their performance, particularly focusing on the sensitivity. Furthermore, this review proposes several promising technologies that can be leveraged in the future and outlines the challenges and prospects associated with achieving rapid, accurate, and intelligent detection of MTs. In the last decade, development of continuous sensor based monitoring systems for farm animals (Precision Livestock Farming (PLF)) has markedly increased with the aim to automate and improve disease detection. In calves, multiple technologies exist, but most detect only a single parameter, and none are available for continuous heart rate and electrocardiogram (ECG). The objective of this paper was to develop and validate a sensor system, derived from a commercially available sensor for humans, for heart (ECG, heart rate), movement (inertial measurement unit with nine degrees of freedom (IMU9)) and temperature data. Data is sent over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to a gateway equipped with a built-in camera for monitoring individual calves. The gateway transmits the data using the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol to a server for long term storage. The data can also be shown on a real-time dashboard. Results indicate a very high correlation for heart rate compared with a widely used veterinary sensor (Pearson correlation coefficient (r) = 0.98), and a high level of accuracy for the movement data for lying versus standing detection (94.3 %). However, a lower correlation between sensor temperature and rectal temperature measurements was observed (r = 0.56). In conclusion, the adapted Movesense system exhibits the capability to accurately measure heart rate and detect the position (lying – standing) of calves but was insufficient as such for temperature monitoring. This sensor system has potential not only for disease detection, but equally for continuous, non-invasive heart rate monitoring, which can be used as an indicator (besides others) for animal welfare. In intensive farming systems the facilities have a central role on both animal welfare and animal production all this paving the way of researching new housing systems and management strategies for reducing the impacts. In particular, in the dairy cattle sector, the early detection of irregular productions is fundamental for animal health and safety. On the other hand, despite the growing interest concerning the modelling and forecasting daily production data, there is lack of studies devoted to identification of anomalous data. To this regard, in this work, a data driven approach for detecting milk production and behaviour anomalies is presented and applied to three farms selected as case study. The DAIRY CHAOS procedure proposed in this paper bases on two numerical algorithms having the scope of separately detect anomalies daily data for a single cow. Both the algorithms presented hereinafter have statistical foundations and take in input daily resting time, milk yield and climate data respectively recorded by pedometer worn by the cow, automatic milking robot and a thermo-hygrometer data logger installed in each barn. The first algorithm takes into consideration three indicators, namely Relative Yield Difference, Relative Laying time Difference and Cumulative Discomfort Index. An anomaly, i.e. a deviation from a normal value, is determined, for a single cow, for a specific day, if the three conditions assessing a noticeable deviation from the normal values of the three indicators above are contemporary verified. The second algorithm, by means of a multifit procedure, introduces the concept of reliability of robust statistics and provides statistically solid, since not affected by outlier values, milk yield and laying time trends for each animal. An RGB camera was aimed at the lying zone and was able to cover about 16 stalls. The proposed framework first utilised two YOLOv5-based networks to segment cow instances and detect cow flank objects. Next, an object tracker was used to link the predictions of each cow throughout the video clip. The Lucas-Kanade optical flow was then calculated specifically on the overlapped area of the cow mask and the flank bounding box. Finally, RR was extracted using Fast Fourier Transform. The results show that the proposed method had a precise RR measurement with a correlation coefficient of 0.944, a root mean square error of 5.35 breaths per minute, and an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.974 when compared to visual observation. The piecewise regression models identified a change in RR when the ambient temperature reached 23.6 °C or the temperature-humidity index reached 72. The corresponding RR thresholds were 60.9 and 60.2 breaths per minute, respectively. Collectively, these results can be used to inform an automated local cooling system, e.g., fans in the lying area. The application of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) in breeding programs to save wild animal species is a relatively new approach to conservation and their ethical implications seem still to be underestimated. However, the ethical evaluation is a decisive step for conservation projects employing ART to address crucial questions like the welfare and life of the animals involved, the survival of the targeted species, the quality and safety of the procedures and the very idea of biodiversity conservation we want to pursue. Balancing the potential benefits of ART with the risks involved requires careful ethical analysis. This paper highlights the increasing role of ART in species conservation and emphasizes the need to address their ethical implications. After discussing the lack of ethical discussion in ART application to wildlife, the contribution outlines an ethical frame to address this gap and introduces an ETHical ASsessment tool (ETHAS) for the ethical self-assessment of ART procedures in vertebrate conservation. The tool allows respondents to highlight ethical aspects to be improved and risks related to the procedure, from its design to each application. The ethical approach to the ART application, relatively novel to wildlife conservation, can contribute to assure the ethical acceptability of conservation programs while favoring discussion and communication among project partners and the integration of ethical aspects in conservation programs. To monitor changes in broiler behaviour related to animal health and welfare, farmers typically observe their flocks using manual observation. However, due to the labour intensive and continuous aspect of this task, the analysis of broiler behaviour could be automated using camera technology. This paper proposes a proof-of-concept camera surveillance system based on the automated detection and tracking of broilers to monitor activity bouts using unsupervised 2D trajectory clustering. Firstly, a convolutional neural network-based detector was trained and tested on our labelled dataset which resulted in a precision, recall and f score of 0.98, 0.90 and 0.94, respectively. Using a tracking-by-detection approach, the proposed system was able to track chickens across video frames with a multi-object tracking accuracy of 74.7%. A component-based feature saliency Gaussian mixture model (CFSGMM) was subsequently generated and applied to objectively cluster the trajectories based on their spatiotemporal information. Nineteen features were extracted from the trajectories, representing both static and dynamic characteristics of broiler movement, and three activity classes were identified: 'least active/resting,' 'active' and 'highly-active.' The proposed method was validated on one-minute monocular video sequences. CFSGMM was applied to cluster 2D trajectories relating to broiler activity bouts within the commercial rearing environment with an agreement ranging from 6.0 to 99.7% when compared to human observation. We demonstrate the potential of the computer vision system to monitor overt, short-term changes in broiler activity associated with on-farm events and discuss the opportunities of leveraging the technology to monitor longer term changes in welfare state. This paper presents a novel approach to automated classification and quantification of sow postures and posture transitions that may enable large scale and accurate continuous behaviour assessment on farm. Automatic classification and quantification of postures and posture transitions in domestic animals has substantial potential to enhance their welfare and productivity. Analysis of such behaviours in farrowing sows can highlight the need for human intervention or lead to the prediction of movement patterns that are potentially dangerous for their piglets, such as crushing when the sow lies down. Data were recorded by a tri-axial accelerometer secured to the hind-end of each sow, in a deployment that involved six sows over the period around parturition. The posture state (standing, sitting, lateral and sternal lying) was automatically classified for the full dataset with a mean F 1 score (a measure of predictive performance between 0 and 1) of 0.78. Sitting was shown to present a greater challenge to classification with a F 1 score of 0.54, compared to the lateral lying postures, which were classified with an average F 1 score of 0.91. Posture transitions were detected with a F 1 score of 0.79. We automatically extracted and visualized a range of features that characterise the manner in which the sows changed posture in order to provide comparative descriptors of sow activity and lying style that can be used to assess the influence of genetics or housing design. Dairy farms are increasing in size and moving from family to external labor. As such, dairy farmers now have the responsibilities of a human resource manager in addition to caring for their animals. The objective of this paper was to review literature in 5 areas of human resource management of a dairy farm: (1) professional accreditation and professional development, (2) extension activities, (3) the role of the advisor, (4) standard operating procedures, and (5) employee training. Although there has been an increase in research in this area in recent years, this review identified numerous areas for future research, including the relationships between farmers and their advisors and employees, and the role of standard operating procedures on dairy farms. Captive/domestic animals are often described as inactive, with the implicit or explicit implication that this high level of inactivity is a welfare problem. Conversely, not being inactive enough may also indicate or cause poor welfare. In humans, too much inactivity can certainly be associated with either negative or positive affective states. In non-human animals, however, the affective states associated with elevated or suppressed levels of inactivity are still not well understood. Part of the complexity is due to the fact that there are many different forms of inactivity, each likely associated with very different affective states. This paper has two aims. One is to identify specific forms of inactivity that can be used as indicators of specific affective states in animals. The other is to identify issues that need to be resolved before we could validly use the remaining, not yet validated forms of inactivity as indicators of affective state. We briefly discuss how inactivity is defined and assessed in the literature, and then how inactivity in its various forms relates to affective (either negative or positive) states in animals, basing our reasoning on linguistic reports of affective states collected from humans displaying inactivity phenotypically similar to that displayed by animals in similar situations, and, when possible, on pharmacological validation. Specific forms of inactivity expressed in response to perceived threats (freezing, tonic immobility, and hiding) appear to be, to date, the best-validated indicators of specific affective states in animals. We also identify a number of specific forms of inactivity likely to reflect either negative (associated with ill-heath, boredom-like, and depression-like conditions), or positive states ( e.g. ‘sun-basking’, post-consummatory inactivity), although further research is warranted before we could use those forms as indicators of the affective states. We further discuss the relationship between increased inactivity and affective states by presenting misleading situations likely to yield wrong conclusions. We conclude that more attention should be paid to inactivity in animal welfare studies: specific forms of inactivity identified in this paper are, or have the potential to be, useful indicators of affective (welfare) states in animals. Geographic spread of parasites and pathogens poses a constant risk to animal health and welfare, particularly given that climate change is expected to potentially expand appropriate ranges for many key species. The spread of deleterious organisms via trade routes and human travelling is relatively closely controlled, though represents only one possible means of parasite/pathogen distribution. The transmission via natural parasite/pathogen movement between geographic locales, is far harder to manage. Though the extent of such movement may be limited by the relative inability of many parasites and pathogens to actively migrate, passive movement over long distances may still occur via migratory hosts. This paper reviews the potential role of migrating birds in the transfer of ectoparasites and pathogens between geographic locales, focusing primarily on ticks. Bird-tick-pathogen relationships are considered, and evidence provided of long-range parasite/pathogen transfer from one location to another during bird migration events. As shown in this paper not only many different arthropod species are carried by migrating birds but consequently these pests carry many different pathogens species which can be transmitted to the migrating birds or to other animal species when those arthropods are dropping during these migrations. This paper aims to contribute to the development of a cost-effective alternative to expensive on-farm animal-based welfare assessment systems. The objective of the study was to design an animal welfare index based on central database information (DBWI), and to validate it against an animal welfare index based on-farm animal-based measurements (AWI). Data on 63 Danish sow herds with herd-sizes of 80 to 2500 sows and an average herd size of 501 were collected from three central databases containing: Meat inspection data collected at animal level in the abattoir, mortality data at herd level from the rendering plants of DAKA, and medicine records at both herd and animal group level (sow with piglets, weaners or finishers) from the central database Vetstat. Selected measurements taken from these central databases were used to construct the DBWI. The relative welfare impacts of both individual database measurements and the databases overall were assigned in consultation with a panel consisting of 12 experts. The experts were drawn from production advisory activities, animal science and in one case an animal welfare organization. The expert panel weighted each measurement on a scale from 1 (not-important) to 5 (very important). The experts also gave opinions on the relative weightings of measurements for each of the three databases by stating a relative weight of each database in the DBWI. On the basis of this, the aggregated DBWI was normalized. The aggregation of AWI was based on weighted summary of herd prevalence’s of 20 clinical and behavioural measurements originating from a 1 day data collection. AWI did not show linear dependency of DBWI. This suggests that DBWI is not suited to replace an animal welfare index using on-farm animal-based measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The bedding material used in barns for dairy cows has a significant effect on animal welfare and performance. Bedding influences the duration in which animals remain lying down and, consequently, the processes of rumination and milk production. It is crucial to have a complete understanding of the properties of bedding materials and the effects of alternative bedding materials on dairy cattle. This paper aims to evaluate the physical, chemical, and biological properties of various alternative and conventional bedding materials for dairy cattle for use in compost bedded pack or freestall barn systems. We analyzed 50 samples of 17 bedding materials produced in 3 European countries. We analyzed physical properties including the water holding capacity, porosity, moisture content, bulk density, dry bulk density, and particle size. Chemical analyses were performed to determine the total N, total organic C, and C:N ratio. In the biological analyses, the Escherichia coli count, total bacteria count, coliform count, and Klebsiella spp. count were assessed. The results demonstrated how the physical properties of the bedding materials may influence the chemical and biological properties. All of the materials presented adequate chemical properties to be used as bedding material. The physical properties of the bedding materials differed widely among the materials except for the dry bulk density, which presented no difference. Moreover, the contamination of each studied microorganism was observed for each bedding material to determine which material had the lowest level of contamination. Posidonia oceanica, Miscanthus grass, and spelt husks could be considered as a potential alternative material for use as bedding material for dairy cows in both systems (i.e., composted bedded pack and freestall). Animal welfare can be negatively affected when dairy cattle experience heat stress. Managing heat stress has become more of a challenge than ever before, due to the increasing number of production animals with increased milk yield, and therefore greater metabolic activity. Environmental temperatures have increased by 1.0°C since the 1800s and are expected to continue to increase by another 1.5°C between 2030 and 2052. Heat stress affects production, reproduction, nutrition, health, and welfare. Means exist to monitor and evaluate heat stress in dairy cattle, as well as different ways to abate heat, all with varying levels of effectiveness. Precision dairy monitoring involves the use of technologies to measure physiological, behavioral, and production indicators on individual animals to detect events of interest. Estrus, disease, and calving detection are common applications, although estrus detection is the most tested and used. Many precision dairy monitoring technologies (PDMT) are commercially available and are being used in research and on farms. As a result, a common question from researchers and producers alike is, "what PDMT should I buy?" The answer to this question is inherently complicated because it depends on many factors, some of which researchers have yet to explore. The objective of this paper is to examine the less quantitively researchable aspects of PDMT adoption and use on-farm. This will be done through 3 lists of 5, determined from published theory and my own experience. First, the 5 main factors that influence adoption of an innovation: (1) relative advantage, (2) compatibility, (3) complexity, (4) trialability, and (5) observability. Each of these factors is at play to a different extent in the 5 adopter categories: (1) innovators, (2) early adopters, (3) early majority, (4) late majority, and (5) laggards. From my experience and research, the top PDMT are those that improve (1) farm efficiency; (2) farm economics; (3) decision-making; (4) animal welfare; and (5) producer happiness. Implementing PDMT on a farm is an enormous and potentially expensive decision. As this part of the industry continues to progress, the potential for different PDMT is endless. Objective of the paper is to describe mechanisms leading to mammary involution in ewes and changes taking place in the mammary gland during that period. Mammary involution is the regression of mammary tissue to non-secreting state and takes place as initiated, gradual or senile. In mutton-type production systems cessation of lactation is abrupt, whilst in dairy-type production systems it is progressive or abrupt. The period from cessation of milk removal until the beginning of subsequent lactation period is termed 'dry-period' and is distinguished into stage of active involution, stage of the 'steady-state' involution and stage of redevelopment and lactogenesis. The 'dry-period' is important in health management of sheep for optimum milk production during the subsequent lactation period, as it is necessary for renewal of mammary epithelial cells. Mammary involution is influenced by decreased activity of galactopoietic hormones and local mechanisms in response to milk accumulation in the gland. Milk accumulation plays a major role in triggering apoptosis of epithelial cells. There are two pathways leading to apoptosis, an intrinsic and an extrinsic. During involution, significant histological changes take place in the mammary gland, mainly reduction (up to 3.6% up to the 4th day) of the epithelial area of the gland and increase of its stromal part. The mammary gland is particularly susceptible to infections after cessation of lactation; progressively, that changes; a keratin plug is formed at the teat orifice, leucocytes accumulate in the gland and concentrations of immunoglobulins and lactoferrin increase. Udder health management at the end of a lactation period aims to cure infections that have occurred during the previous lactation period and prevent new intramammary infections during the 'dry-period'. Culling ewes with at least one mammary gland permanently damaged or ones chronically affected or others with incidents of relapsing mastitis or not fully respondent to mastitis treatment during the preceding lactation period contributes to decrease of veterinary expenses for mastitis control in the flock, elimination of sources of potential infection for other animals in the flock and decrease of flock bulk somatic cell counts in the subsequent lactation period. Culling should be complemented with intramammary antibiotic administration at the end of a lactation period. In many clinical studies from around the world, administration of antimicrobial agents at the end of a lactation period has been found beneficial. Antibiotic administration at drying-off may be performed to all animals in a flock ('complete') or only to those considered to be infected ('selective'). In all cases, maintenance of the prescribed withdrawal periods is essential to safeguard public health. The procedure should always be applied as part of a strategic udder health management plan in a flock; implementation improves the welfare of animals and affords significant financial benefits to the farmer. Food chain information (FCI) refers to information that is gathered along the food chain for animals intended for slaughter and is exchanged between the stakeholders at the different stages of production. FCI includes, for example, information on veterinary medicinal products or other treatments administered to the animals within a relevant period (RP) and with a withdrawal period greater than 0 days according to Regulation (EC) No 853/2004. Since the EU regulation does not specify which exact data should be collected, there are different definitions of the RP and different forms for collecting FCI across Europe. As a consequence, the information content of FCI has become heterogenous. Our study aimed to gather FCI report forms and the definitions of RPs from 35 European countries via an expert survey. Our research showed that the time frame for the RPs ranges from 0 days to the entire fattening period for all three species across Europe. For pigs and bovines, there is no clear consensus on a meaningful time frame for the RP. However, for broilers, in most European countries the RP covers the entire fattening period. Thus, harmonising the RP to the entire fattening period for broilers should be considered across the EU. Further research is necessary to determine appropriate RPs for pigs and bovines. In the case of bovines, RPs should vary depending on production types. Establishing an animal health database and transitioning from paper-based to electronic FCI transmission could standardise RPs and bring data harmonisation. Currently, the various FCI forms have different structures and request differing information. While our study did not aim to identify the optimal parameters, we advise against using forms that only require a signature stating that there is no data that could affect meat safety. Instead, farmers should provide relevant data or answer yes-no-questions. Additionally, improving and modernising FCI should also include educating and training those who work with it daily. In recent years, the presence of urban wildlife has increased in many cities around the world, with the consequent increase of human-animal relations. The city of Genoa (NW Italy) is a particularly complex case study where such phenomena are associated with rural depopulation of the surrounding countryside and spontaneous rewilding processes that have led several animal species to approach urban areas in search of new spaces. This paper deals with human-wildlife interactions in Genoa in relation to the geography of the city by way of a survey circulated throughout Genoa. Drawing from survey data, the research investigates residents' perceptions and understanding of urban wildlife in relation to their area of residency with a focus on wild boars. People's responses show that some areas of the city have a higher level of interaction with wildlife, and this partly affects the way in which such phenomena are perceived and tolerated by the population.
