In this work, we present a systematic investigation on the regioselectivity and topicity of radical hydrogenation/alkylation of graphene. The complex process of sequential covalent binding of hydrogen and methyl radicals to the edges and basal plane of graphene, and addition to the direct neighborhood of pre-existing defects were quantitatively investigated using different computational techniques. Considering both thermodynamic and kinetic factors a general model for graphene functionalization has been developed. Based on the proposed model we performed numerical Monte-Carlo simulations, which provide evidence of a fractal expansion of functionalized regions leading to a fractal-seaweeds type of addition. We show that the applications of the model is widespread and includes the description of Birch-like hydrogenation, reductive alkylation and direct radical addition, which allows to evaluate the effect of the size, shape and the quality of a graphene flake on the addition morphology. Abstract: Several fluorine containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with exact carbon atom topology of the C60 fullerene have been synthesized. Different numbers of fluorine atoms were introduced in the key positions, as needed for an efficient intramolecular condensation to the fullerene molecule. Abstract: We report the synthesis and purification of a C60H30 precursor molecule for the end-cap of a (6, 6) armchair and of a C54H24 precursor molecule for a (9, 0) zig-zag type single-walled nanotube. Abstract: Using the small-molecule organic semiconductor bis(1H,1H-perfluorobutyl)-dicyano-perylene tetracarboxylic diimide, C3F7CH2-PTCDI-(CN)2, and a low-temperature-processed, high-capacitance gate dielectric based on a phosphonic acid self-assembled monolayer, we have manufactured n-channel thin-film transistors on glass substrates. The transistors operate with low voltages (2V) and have an electron mobility of 0.04cm2/Vs and an on/off ratio of 105. By combining C3F7CH2-PTCDI-(CN)2 n-channel transistors with pentacene p-channel transistors, we have also manufactured low-voltage, low-power organic complementary inverters with good static and dynamic performance. The exploration of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and understanding of the structure-property relationship requires the synthesis of GNRs with precisely controllable architecture. In this communication we report on bottom-up fabrication of wide armchair GNR from a para-oligophenylene based molecular precursor.
