To determine medical school characteristics that may result in graduates entering the specialty of public health and general preventive medicine (PH&GPM), the authors conducted an analysis comparing the presence of affiliated preventive medicine residency programs and combined Master of Public Health degree programs with the likelihood of graduates entering the specialty of PH&GPM. Using data from the American Board of Preventive Medicine and publicly available information on medical schools and residencies, in spring 2022, the authors compared medical schools that produced PH&GPM physicians with the presence of a PH&GPM residency program, the presence of any preventive medicine residency (public health and general preventive medicine or occupational medicine or aerospace medicine), and the presence of a combined Doctor of Medicine‒Master of Public Health or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine‒Master of Public Health program. Between 2017 and 2021, there were 385 physicians newly board certified in PH&GPM, 210 medical schools, and 75 preventive medicine residencies. The 385 physicians graduated from 110 of the 210 medical schools. Analyses showed statistically significant associations between medical schools that graduated PH&GPM physicians and the presence of PH&GPM residencies (OR=3.74; 95% CI=1.61, 8.69), all preventive medicine residencies (OR=2.75; 95% CI=1.37, 5.51), and combined degree programs (OR=4.37; 95% CI=2.45, 7.79). Because PH&GPM residency programs affiliated with medical schools are a significant factor associated with PH&GPM physicians obtaining board certification, such analyses may provide critical guidance in the utilization of resources intended to produce more physicians certified in this specialty. Soybean ( Glycine max (L.) Merr.) has excellent potential as an alternative crop to canola in southern Alberta farming systems. However, soybean is susceptible to Fusarium root rot, which usually results in the occurrence of dead or dying plants in mid-to-late summer and severe reductions in yield. A total of 102 isolates identified as Fusarium were recovered from diseased soybean root samples collected from central and southern Alberta from 2011 to 2013. Ten species of Fusarium were identified, with F. acuminatum as the predominant species (31 out of 102 isolates, 30.39%), followed by F. equiseti (16.67%), F. culmorum (13.73%), F. avenaceum (10.78%), F. oxysporum (8.82%), F. redolens (7.84%), F. torulosum (4.90%), F. tricinctum (2.94%), F. commune (1.96%) and F. proliferatum (0.98%). This is the first report of F. commune , F. redolens and F. torulosum causing root rot in soybean in Canada. Phylogenetic analyses based on sequence data from the translation elongation factor 1-α (EF-1α) and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region were used to evaluate genetic variation and, in conjunction with morphological characters, for species identification. Rho GDP-Dissociation Inhibitors (RhoGDIs) are important regulators of the Rho family of small GTPases. The expression of RhoGDIs is altered in a variety of cancers and they have been shown to mediate several processes during tumorigenesis and cancer progression. Using examples of RhoGDI-mediated signaling and expression patterns in endothelial cells as well as pancreatic, breast, and bladder cancer, the multitude of potential cancer therapeutic targets presented by a better understanding of their function is illustrated. Several novel therapeutic strategies are proposed for intervening in RhoGDI signaling, and potential complications arising from their implementation are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The discovery of biofilm formation in bacteria and yeasts has led to a better understanding of microbial ecology and to new insights into the mechanisms of virulence and persistence of pathogenic microorganisms. However, it is generally assumed that filamentous fungi, some of which have a significant impact on our health or our economy, do not form biofilms. In contrast to this assumption, here we discuss recent findings supporting the hypothesis that surface-associated filamentous fungi can form biofilms. Based on these findings and on previous models for bacterial and yeast systems, we propose preliminary criteria and a model for biofilm formation by filamentous fungi. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The 4-nitrophenyl ether is an efficient directing group in the asymmetric aminohydroxylation reaction of homoallylic ether derivatives. Either regioisomeric product can be obtained with useful levels of enantioselectivity allowing for the short enantioselective synthesis of GABOB and homoserine derivatives. Abstract: Invasion and metastasis are the critical steps in cancer progression that lead to death from this disease. Intense investigation into the underlying mechanisms of metastasis has revealed a complex set of signaling pathways that regulate the process. Since the mid‐1980s, it has been demonstrated that the Rho family of proteins plays a major role in these pathways. Proteins that regulate Rho, including guanine nucleotide exchange factors, GTPase‐activating proteins, and Rho GDP dissociation inhibitors (RhoGDIs), have also been shown to contribute to cancer progression. Among this group of Rho‐regulating proteins is RhoGDI2 (RhoGDIbeta/LyGDI/GDID4/RabGDIbeta). Our laboratory initially identified RhoGDI2 as a metastasis suppressor due to its differential expression between metastatically capable and poorly metastatic bladder cancer cell lines. Over the subsequent years, in vivo and in vitro systems have been used to model steps in the metastatic cascade and to test how the expression of RhoGDI2 affected those processes. This chapter describes several of the more significant methods used to investigate the role of RhoGDI2 in bladder cancer invasion and metastasis. These methods include an in vitro assay for invasion using bladder organ cultures, lung metastasis assays in immunocompromised murine hosts, polymerase chain reaction‐based quantification of metastatic burden, and derivation of increasingly metastatic cell lines. Abstract: The greatest risk for morbidity and mortality caused by bladder cancer is due to metastasis. For this reason, we have developed a paradigm for discovering the molecular mechanisms underlying bladder cancer progression to an invasive and metastatic phenotype. Results of microarray gene expression analysis of a cell culture model were parsed by identifying overlapping genes that correlate with increasing stage and grade of human tumors. One gene identified by this method, RhoGDI2, was tested in various in vitro and in vivo model systems and confirmed to be a metastasis suppressor gene. Using a similar strategy of gene identification by concordance of microarray gene expression results from cells expressing RhoGDI2 and human bladder cancers, two molecular effectors of RhoGDI2 signaling were identified. These targets, endothelin-1 and Neuromedin U are excellent potential targets for therapeutic intervention in the metastatic cascade. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The CCSD(T) geometry at the approximate basis set limit, in conjunction with the geometry obtained using the CCSDT method and a moderate basis set, suggests an equilibrium HO–OO bond length of approximately 1.59Å. A commonly used protocol for DNA extraction from Plasmodiophora brassicae was modified by adding an alkaline treatment step to increase the purity of resting spores. The quality of DNA extracted by the modified protocol was improved due to the removal of DNA contamination from host plant cells and other microorganisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three experiments examined whether or not benchmark findings observed in the immediate retrieval from episodic memory are similarly observed over much greater time-scales. Participants were presented with experimentally-controlled lists of words at the very slow rate of one word every hour using an iPhone recall application, RECAPP, which was also used to recall the words in either any order (free recall: Experiments 1 to 3) or the same order as presented (serial recall: Experiment 3). We found strong temporal contiguity effects, weak serial position effects with very limited recency, and clear list length effects in free recall; clear primacy effects and classic error gradients in serial recall; and recency effects in a final two-alternative forced choice recognition task (Experiments 2 and 3). Our findings extend the timescales over which temporal contiguity effects have been observed, but failed to find consistent evidence for strong long-term recency effects with experimenter-controlled stimuli. Previous investigations identified 2′-C-Me-branched ribo-C-nucleoside adenosine analogues, 1 , which contains a pyrrolo[2,1- f ][1,2,4]triazin-4-amine heterocyclic base, and 2 , which contains an imidazo[2,1- f ][1,2,4]triazin-4-amine heterocyclic base as two compounds with promising anti-HCV in vitro activity. This Letter describes the synthesis and evaluation of a series of novel analogues of these compounds substituted at the 2-, 7-, and 8-positions of the heterocyclic bases. A number of active new HCV inhibitors were identified but most compounds also demonstrated unacceptable cytotoxicity. Abstract: Cyanoacetylene enriched in deuterium was used to record pure rotational transitions of DC3N and its rare 13C and 15N isotopic species by employing Fourier transform microwave (FTMW) spectroscopy on a supersonic-jet expansion at centimeter wavelengths (8.2–25.4GHz) and by using long-path absorption spectroscopy at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths (82–900GHz). In addition, submillimeter wave measurements (304–897GHz) have been performed for DC3N in its lowest excited vibrational state. Hyperfine structure caused by the 14N and D nuclei has been resolved in the FTMW spectra. Quantum-chemical calculations have been performed on the hyperfine structure parameters at the coupled-cluster level (CCSD(T)) with up to core-polarized quintuple zeta basis-sets and were found to be in excellent agreement with experimental data as far as these were available. Vibrational corrections on the quadrupole coupling parameters have been evaluated at the MP2 level employing a quadruple zeta basis-set.
