The peculiar illumination and insolation conditions at the poles of the Moon lead to the formation of Permanently Shadowed Regions (PSR) that act as cold traps for volatiles and are important for In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU). However, since these regions lie in shadows of surrounding topographic highs, the ability of optical remote sensing in imaging these regions for photo reconnaissance is limited and using other modes of remote sensing becomes imperative. In this work, reflectance from optical data, backscatter from active microwave data and temperature from thermal data from the surfaces of three craters – de Gerlache, Haworth and Shoemaker – on the South Pole of the Moon, in close proximity to the Artemis III candidate landing sites, has been studied. Images from Clementine UVVIS, LRO WAC and LRO NAC have been compared with fully polarimetric data from the L-bands sensor of Chandrayaan-2 DFSAR. Further, the temperatures at the surface of the craters have been studied using data from LRO DIVINER. Since large parts of the craters under study lie in permanent shadows, Clementine UVVIS and LRO WAC could image only some parts of the rims. LRO NAC, with its longer exposure times, could image some parts within the crater however the walls of the crater and the floor near the walls remained in shadow. DFSAR was found to be useful in viewing the permanently shadowed regions of the craters. Overall, the backscatter in HH and VV (co-pol) channels was higher than the backscatter in HV and VH (cross-pol) channels. The elevated rims of the craters were clearly visible in co-pol channels and the rough texture of the ejecta of the craters had a distinct high backscatter in cross-pol channels. This fully polarimetric data can be used to map the interiors of the craters where optical data has low albedo. Analysis of the thermal data revealed that within the craters, in the regions that were in perpetual shadows, the maximum summer temperatures were less than 150 K making these regions cold traps for volatiles and possible locations of surface water–ice. The parts of craters lying in the shadows of surrounding higher features had lower maximum temperatures in summer and the parts facing them had higher maximum temperatures due to reflected insolation. Imaging spectrometry is a powerful tool among remote sensing techniques to analyze the chemical compositions and physical properties of the lunar regolith. Recalibration of the classical method byLucey and co-workers with Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) data provides an opportunity to understand the FeO, TiO 2, and optical maturity distributions over the lunar nearside on a global scale. We estimated the chemical compositionsand optical maturity from the M3 spectral reflectance around the 1 µm region. The standard chemical compositions of the lunar landing sites were estimated based on origin optimization and data fitting. We obtained an optimized origin of (0.08, 1.18) for FeO and (0.07, 0.71) for TiO 2. The Spectrophotometric evaluations of Catharina and Cyrillus craters, located in the lunar nearside are categorized under the matured category. The estimation results reveal that the FeO wt % of the Catharina crater varies from 0.0002 to 19.62, and that of the Cyrillus crater varies from 0.0001 to 12.32. TiO 2 wt% of Catharina crater varies from 0.01 to 86.12, while Cyrillus Crater varies from 0.01 to 4.34. The optical maturity (OMAT) of the Catharina crater varies from 0.0001 to 0.19 to that of the Cyrillus Crater Varies from 0.01 to 0.17. The overall summary of the results points out that lunar regolith is a fabulous repository of FeO and TiO 2 and quantitatively this metal abundance may be more than the anticipated values. This review article provides an overview of various aspects of lunar exploration, including missions to the Moon, collection and analysis of lunar sample data in laboratories, and the processing and analysis of remote sensing data, particularly using radar techniques. Both remote sensing and in-situ methods are critical for advancing our understanding of the lunar surface and its properties. This review article focuses on the identification and quantification of water–ice deposits located in areas such as Permanently shadowed areas (PSRs) and the lunar poles (section " Lunar Poles and PSRs: A Special Environment "). These volatile resources have the potential to serve as valuable sources of fuel for future missions, making it crucial for the lunar community to determine their abundance and distribution. After thoroughly examining lunar samples using high-precision laboratory techniques, many preconceptions were dispelled which is highlighted in the section " Laboratory Investigation of Lunar samples ". But as in-situ observations are difficult to acquire, especially terrestrial bodies samples, remote sensing techniques allow the global understanding of the surface. The article specifically highlights the importance of understanding the electrical characteristics of the lunar surface and how radar inversion can provide valuable information in this regard. The " Conclusion " section of this review article serves as a key takeaway for readers, underscoring the critical role that both in-situ and remote sensing techniques play in advancing our understanding of the Moon. To confirm the presence of water on the moon, many scientists of the world are making continuous efforts through remote sensing data of different missions. In this direction, the Dual Frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar (DFSAR) sensor of the Chandrayaan-2 mission adds a very important chapter which is the world's first Planetary SAR mission of fully polarimetric capability with L- and S-band. This study utilizes the L-band fully polarimetric DFSAR data of Chandrayaan-2 mission for the PolSAR parameters-based analysis and ice detection in permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) of the lunar South Polar craters. The PSR IDs SP_875930_3125710, SP_837670_3387710, and SP_874930_3578760 of the lunar South Pole were selected for the polarimetric analysis using DFSAR L-band. Based on previous studies ((Li et al., 2018), two out of three PSR Ids (SP_875930_3125710 and SP_874930_3578760) were easy to identify for surface ice. That is why only two PSR IDs were used for polarimetric SAR analysis of DFSAR data for surface ice characterization and detection. The hybrid polarimetric simulation was also performed to the fully polarimetric L-band data to study stokes vectors and associated child parameters for the selected study area. The analysis of polarimetric distortions confirms the persistence of the polarimetric quality of the SAR data and for this, the polarimetric distortion analysis was performed with co-pol and cross-pol channels. Wave dichotomy-based Huynen decomposition and Barnes decomposition models were implemented to the fully polarimetric quad-pol DFSAR data. The eigenvalue-eigenvector-based decomposition model was also implemented to characterize the scattering behavior of the PSRs. A high correlation was obtained between Circular Polarization Ratio (CPR), entropy, and alpha for the 200 hundred points randomly collected from the image. Diversity index also showed a high positive correlation with CPR. The polarimetric quality of the data was evaluated with the scatterplot between the cross-polarimetric channels and it was observed that the L-band quad-pol data of DFSAR satisfies the criteria for PolSAR data of a monostatic SAR system. Analysis of the results obtained from the polarimetric SAR data indicated that the high volumetric scattering and CPR for the PSR ID SP_875930_3125710 may be due to ice clusters within the permanently shadowed region. Polarimetric analysis of the PSR (SP_874930_3578760) at Howarth Crater using L-band DFSAR data shows a low amount of volumetric scattering and a low CPR for most locations in the PSR. The different ranges of CPR and volume scattering for both craters indicate that polarimetric parameters and indices should be studied in conjunction with geomorphological parameters of the lunar surface, for unambiguous identification of surface ice clusters in the PSR. The Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) systems use electromagnetic radiations of different polarizations in the microwave frequency to collect the scattering information from targets on the Earth. Nevertheless, as with any other electronic device, the PolSAR systems are also not ideal and subjected to distortions. The most important of these distortions are the polarimetric distortions caused due to the channel imbalance, phase bias, and crosstalk between the different polarization channels. For the spaceborne PolSAR systems, the Earth's ionosphere also contributes to an additional polarimetric distortion known as the Faraday rotation. An effort was made in this study to perform the polarimetric calibration of the Quad-pol and Compact-pol PolSAR datasets acquired using different airborne and spaceborne PolSAR systems to estimate and minimize these polarimetric distortions. The investigation was also done to analyze the impact of these polarimetric distortions on the scattering mechanisms from ground targets and on its dependency on the radar wavelength. The study was done using the UAVSAR L-band Quad-pol dataset, RADARSAT-2 Quad-pol dataset, ALOS-2 PALSAR-2, ISRO's L&S- Band Airborne SAR (LS-ASAR) Quad-pol and Compact-pol datasets, and the RISAT-1 Compact-pol dataset. Calibration of the airborne PolSAR data was carried to understand the level of polarimetric distortions in the LS-ASAR product that is a precursor mission to the spaceborne Dual-Frequency L&S Band NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission. It is understood that the crosstalk is the dominant polarimetric distortion, which severely affects the PolSAR datasets compared to the other polarimetric distortions, and it is more for the higher wavelength PolSAR systems. The Quegan, Improved Quegan, and Ainsworth algorithms for crosstalk estimation and minimization was performed for the different Quad-pol datasets and it was found that the Improved Quegan algorithm is suitable for removing crosstalk from datasets having high crosstalk and the Ainsworth algorithm is suitable for removing crosstalk from datasets having low crosstalk. The Freeman method of the polarimetric calibration was implemented for the compact-pol datasets and it was able to considerably minimize the polarimetric distortions. The coherency matrix, scattering matrix, model-based decomposition, polarimetric signatures, and roll invariant parameter-based analysis revealed that all the datasets after polarimetric calibration were showing the correct scattering responses expected from the ground targets. The lunar surface comprises complex geomorphological features, which have been formed by the conjunction of processes namely impact cratering and volcanism. Geological features on the Lunar surface can be bifurcated into two main areas named Maria region and the Highland region. Taurus-Littrow valley, which was the Apollo-17 mission landing site, consisting of unique geomorphological characteristics by having a sample size of both Lunar Maria and Highland regions. The dielectric constant is a parameter that gives an approximate distribution of the constituent material of the target area. It is a complex quantity, which indicates a periodic variation of the electric field. The real part of dielectric constant indicates stored energy and the imaginary part indicates dielectric loss factor or the loss of the electric field in the medium due to continuous varying electric field. Planetary surfaces for which determining dielectric constant is an important analysis for most of the space missions, ground measurement is not feasible. This work includes the machine learning-based modeling of dielectric constant for the Apollo 17 landing site the Taurus-Littrow valley. Based on the surface roughness of the study area, two models Gaussian and Exponential have been implemented and compared for the modeled output of the dielectric constant values.The modeling approaches for dielectric characterization of the lunar surface were implemented on NASA's LRO Mini-RF SAR data and Mini-SAR hybrid-pol data of ISRO's Chandrayaan-1 mission. The coefficient of determination (r2) and the root mean square error (RMSE) of the theoretical Gaussian model was 0.995, 0.042 and the Exponential model was 0.948, 0.1349 respectively. When compared with the already calculated values of dielectric constant from Apollo 17 return samples and literature survey, the Gaussian model gives a better variation. Gaussian model was further applied to the Lunar north pole crater namely Hermite-A crater, whose distinctive geomorphological characteristics and location being lunar north pole region, makes it one of the coldest places in the Solar System and a prominent location of water ice deposits. • A multi-storey building is considered with nonlinear viscous dampers in each floor. • Structure model is considered as an equivalent multi-degree of freedom mechanical system and equation of motion is found. • Using mode summation method displacement response of building is found for each floor. • It is observed that due to presence of nonlinear viscous dampers the displacement response is decreased remarkably. Viscous dampers are the retrofitted devices used to reduce the vibration energy in mechanical systems. In the present paper an investigation is carried to see the effect of nonlinear viscous dampers (NVDs) in multistory buildings. A model of building consisting of NVDs in each floor is considered and is subjected to base shear excitation. The complete model is considered as an equivalent mechanical system and equation of motion is established for equilibrium condition. Using mode summation method analytical expressions are found for the displacement response of the building's floors due to shear waves. To see the role of NVDs different values of damping coefficients are considered and the result is compared with the response of building without NVDs. Naval transportations have grown exponentially in the past few years' and the quantity of illegitimate oil discharges in the oceans has developed with the volume of traffic imposing a severe threat to marine lives and ecosystem. Oil spills dampen the capillary wave's effect hence create a dark signature on satellite image which is often called a dark object/matter that can be easily detected by SAR sensors. This study reviews the potential of quad-pol and hybrid-pol datasets in detecting oil spills. The data used for this study is the UAVSAR quad-pol and RISAT-1 hybrid/compact-pol dataset. These datasets were acquired during an oil spill experiment named the Norwegian Radar oil Spill Experiment (NORSE2015) which was carried out in the North Sea in June 2015. Basic pre-processing and decomposition modeling techniques namely Freeman and Durden, Van-Zyl, Yamaguchi, and Multiple-Component Scattering Model (MCSM) were applied on UAVSAR dataset, while Raney and Compact-Pol decompositions were applied to RISAT-1 dataset to know different surface backscattering behavior shown by the sea and oil patches. It was observed that Van-Zyl decomposition for UAVSAR and Compact-Pol decomposition for the RISAT-1 dataset gave the most suitable outcome based on the separability analysis to distinguish between oil and water. Two classification techniques Wishart Supervised Classifier (WSC) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifications were implemented on decomposed scattering elements of Van-Zyl and Compact-Pol. Radial Basis Function (RBF) kernel parameter values in SVM were used to precisely classify the oil patches from seawater. All the applied decomposition experiments provide good separability between water and oil. Later on, WSC and SVM had been used to finally classify both the dataset outputs. WSC had given better results with an accuracy of 83% for UAVSAR and 86% for RISAT-1, with a larger window size by minimizing the misclassification of sea class into oil spill class. • Nine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and cotinine were found in the cord blood, confirming its transfer to the fetus. • Machine learning approach used in the study provides an insight to distinguish between low and normal birth weight babies. • Proposed pLBW webserver predicts the state of the baby with a maximum accuracy of 82.42% using SVM algorithm. Prenatal exposure to organic pollutants increases the risk of low birth weight (LBW) offspring. Women involved in the plucking of tea leaves can be exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during pregnancy through inhalation and diet. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate the association of maternal socio-demographic features and blood PAH concentration with LBW; also to develop a model for predicting LBW risk. The study was performed by recruiting 55 women who delivered LBW and 120 women with NBW (normal birth weight) babies from Assam Medical College. The placental tissue, maternal and cord blood samples were collected. A total of sixteen PAHs and cotinine were analysed by HPLC and GC-MS. Association of PAH concentration with weight was determined using correlation and multiple logistic regression analyses. Predictive model was developed using SVM light and Weka software. Maternal features such as age, education, food habits, occupation, etc. were found to be associated with LBW deliveries (p-value<0.05). Overall, 9 PAHs and cotinine were detected in the samples. A multiple logistic regression depicted an increased likelihood of LBW by exposure to PAHs (pyrene, di-benzo (a,h) anthracene, fluorene and fluoranthene) and cotinine. Models based on the features and PAHs/ cotinine predicted LBW offspring with 84.35% sensitivity and 74% specificity. LBW prediction models are available at http://dev.icmr.org.in/plbw/ webserver. Abstract The Kilauea volcano on the Hawaii island started erupting on 3rd May 2018 after an earthquake of magnitude 5.0. The initial volcano eruption and the subsequent earthquakes resulted in the opening of new volcanic fissures, continuous lava flow at the lower east rift zone and the collapse of the summit caldera floor. All these activities continued until the 1st week of August 2018. The Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) technique is an advanced form of Differential Interferometry (DInSAR) which is capable of monitoring surface deformations with millimetre level accuracy. SBAS technique was utilised here for estimating the surface deformation on Hawaii island due to the volcanic episode. InSAR coherence technique was also utilised in this study for localised analysis at the summit and at the lower east rift zone to detect the time series deformation information and lava flow patterns. 14 interferometric datasets acquired by the ESA's Sentinel-1 C-band satellite from April 2018 to September 2018 were used in this study. The data acquired by the seismometers installed at Kilauea by Hawaii Volcano Observatory, the SWIR band of Sentinel-2 and the thermal band of Landsat-8 were used to correlate and verify the results obtained through the SBAS and InSAR coherence analysis. The combined interpretation of results obtained from all the sources gave insights about the underground magma conduit system, surface deformations, lava flow channels and the correlation between the magmatic and seismic activity happened there which are discussed in detail in this paper. A thermodynamic equilibrium analysis on steam reforming process to utilize acetone-butanol-ethanol-water mixture obtained from biomass fermentation as biorenewable fuel has been performed to produce clean energy carrier H 2 via non-stoichiometric approach namely Gibbs free energy minimization method. The effect of process variables such as temperature (573–1473 K), pressure (1–10 atm), and steam/fuel molar feed ratio ( F ABE  = 5.5–12) have been investigated on equilibrium compositions of products, H 2 , CO, CO 2 , CH 4 and solid carbon. The best suitable conditions for maximization of desired product H 2 , suppression of CH 4 , and inhibition of solid carbon are 973 K, 1 atm, steam/fuel molar feed ratio = 12. Under these conditions, the maximum molar production of hydrogen is 8.35 with negligible formation of carbon and methane. Furthermore, the energy requirement per mol of H 2 (48.96 kJ), thermal efficiency (69.13%), exergy efficiency (55.09%), exergy destruction (85.36 kJ/mol), and generated entropy (0.29 kJ/mol.K) have been achieved at same operating conditions. To develop effective adaptation strategies for climate change, particularly in regions where water is scarce, it is crucial to comprehend and quantify how hydrological responses are influenced by anthropogenic activities and climate change. The primary concern nowadays is to identify the hydrologic sensitive and resilient catchment under these diverse conditions. Thus, a framework is developed in this study to analyse the hydrologic sensitivity and resiliency of a catchment incorporating the elasticity-based Budyko approach. The developed framework is applied to three neighbouring catchments (Brahmani, Baitarani, and Subarnarekha) in eastern India that have received less attention in light of resiliency and sensitivity perspectives. The Budyko approach is first applied using hydro-climatic records of historical phase (1979–2018) and then extended for future phase (2025–2064) under four different Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) (1-2.6, 2-4.5, 3-7.0 and 5-8.5) of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) projections which will provide new insights to the hydrological community. The results highlight that streamflow variations of the Subarnarekha is more sensitive to anthropogenic activities in all time phases. In contrast, the Brahmani and Baitarani are more sensitive to climate change in future phases. During historical phase, the Brahmani and Baitarani are identified to be resilient catchments with high water yield and dry climate, whereas the Subarnarekha is found to be sensitive catchment, exhibiting low water yield and dry climate. However, in future phase, all three catchments are predicted to be resilient, characterized by high water yield and wet climate. The major inference from this study is excess anthropogenic activities can disrupt the anticipated hydrological functioning of a catchment, particularly under critical climatic conditions, which can result in decreasing hydrological resiliency. The finding of this study mainly highlights the response of a hydrological system to climate change and anthropogenic activities to explore the approach of sensitivity and resiliency from a socio-hydrological perspective. Identification and extraction of material in the urban scenario are always challenging due to the presence of different heterogeneous materials. Airborne hyperspectral sensors with the advantage of both high spectral and spatial resolution can be used in such areas for the identification and mapping of urban materials. Manual extraction of the endmembers in highly dense heterogeneous urban regions is a very difficult task to achieve, but with automated extraction techniques, it yields promising results. To counter the mixed pixels problem in heterogeneous urban areas automated endmember extraction techniques like Endmember Average RMS (EAR), Minimum Average Spectral Angle (MASA), and Count Based Endmember Selection (CoB) was used for pure endmember identification in the densely populated urban area of Kolkata region using AVIRIS NG imagery. Spectral Unmixing Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis (MESMA), Linear Spectral Unmixing (LSU), and Mixture Tuned Matched Filtering (MTMF) was performed on AVIRIS NG data using the extracted endmembers of different urban materials. The rule-based classification was performed on abundance images obtained from MESMA, MTMF, and LSU techniques for comparative analysis. Classification using MESMA abundance images outperformed in mapping mixed urban environments with an overall accuracy (OA) of 88.6 % followed by the rule-based classified output of MTMF and LSU with OA of 75.27% and 72.45% respectively. Thermodynamic equilibrium analysis has been adopted for oxidative steam reforming of butanol-ethanol mixture (B-E) as renewable source obtained from Acetone:Butanol:Ethanol (ABE) fermentation to produce H 2 by using Gibbs free energy minimization method. The effects of pressure (1–10 atm), temperature (573–1473 K), steam/fuel molar feed ratio ( f O1 = 9 and 12), O 2 /fuel molar feed ratio ( f O2 = 0–3), and B-E mixture compositions (50–90%B) on equilibrium compositions of H 2 , CO, CO 2 , CH 4 , and carbon are performed. The maximum H 2 yield (65.456% for f O2 = 0 and 58% for f O2 = 0.75) has been achieved at f O1 = 9, 90% B mixture, 1 atm, and 973 K. The yields of CO, CO 2 , and CH 4 with respect to maximum H 2 are 53.390%, 44.384%, and 2.225% for f O2 = 0, and 45.677%, 53.269%, and 1.053% for f O2 = 0.75, respectively. The regulation of the carbon cycle is a critical ecosystem service provided by forests globally. It is, therefore, necessary to have robust techniques for speedy assessment of forest biophysical parameters at the landscape level. It is arduous and time taking to monitor the status of vast forest landscapes using traditional field methods. Remote sensing and GIS techniques are efficient tools that can monitor the health of forests regularly. Biomass estimation is a key parameter in the assessment of forest health. Polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) remote sensing has already shown its potential for forest biophysical parameter retrieval. The current research work focuses on the retrieval of forest biophysical parameters of tropical deciduous forest, using fully polarimetric spaceborne C-band data with Polarimetric SAR Interferometry (PolInSAR) techniques. PolSAR based Interferometric Water Cloud Model (IWCM) has been used to estimate aboveground biomass (AGB). Input parameters to the IWCM have been extracted from the decomposition modeling of SAR data as well as PolInSAR coherence estimation. The technique of forest tree height retrieval utilized PolInSAR coherence based modeling approach. Two techniques – Coherence Amplitude Inversion (CAI) and Three Stage Inversion (TSI) – for forest height estimation are discussed, compared and validated. These techniques allow estimation of forest stand height and true ground topography. The accuracy of the forest height estimated is assessed using ground-based measurements. PolInSAR based forest height models showed enervation in the identification of forest vegetation and as a result height values were obtained in river channels and plain areas. Overestimation in forest height was also noticed at several patches of the forest. To overcome this problem, coherence and backscatter based threshold technique is introduced for forest area identification and accurate height estimation in non-forested regions. IWCM based modeling for forest AGB retrieval showed R 2 value of 0.5, RMSE of 62.73 (t ha −1 ) and a percent accuracy of 51%. TSI based PolInSAR inversion modeling showed the most accurate result for forest height estimation. The correlation between the field measured forest height and the estimated tree height using TSI technique is 62% with an average accuracy of 91.56% and RMSE of 2.28 m. The flow through thin packed columns (diameter 7 mm −19 mm) with superhydrophobic (SH) lotus-leaf layered wall is investigated for its implications in drag reduction for chromatographic applications. The study includes measuring the flow rate for gravity driven flow through SH columns: packed and unpacked under different flow regimes. The flow is characterized in terms of the flow rate enhancement factor with respect to flow through smooth columns. Flow in SH packed column in presence of wall slip is modeled to evaluate slip length and friction factor based on the measured enhancement factor. Results establish an enhanced flow slippage in packed column with respect to unpacked column. For unpacked columns, slip length lies in the range reported previously 47–117 μm. For packed column it increases by 2.5 times (140–280 μm). The effects of slip manifest dramatically in the drag reduction which is as high as 40% for packed column compared to 3% for unpacked column. The Galapagos Archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, situated 1000 km from the Ecuadorian coast, has been considered one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Its geographical location, ongoing seismo_volcanic activities, and the island's extreme isolation have led to the development of a wide variety of unique plant and animal species, which inspired Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. La cumbre volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in the Galapagos archipelago and is situated closest to the mantle plume. Eruptions are frequent here, with a record of 30 eruptions since 1800. Recently La Cumbre volcano erupted on 2020 January 12, with 11 seismic tremors recorded on that day with a maximum magnitude of 4.7. The Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) is an advanced Differential Interferometric SAR technique used to generate the deformation time series from the sequence of SAR datasets with a reduced spatiotemporal decorrelation. It is one of the best approaches for monitoring and analyzing surface deformations from space with a millimeter level of accuracy. In this paper, we analyze the January 2020 eruption of the La cumbre volcano using the SBAS technique. 9 Sentinel-1C band SAR data granules from 2019 November 17 to 2020 February 21 were used to generate the deformation time series map for estimating the degree of deformation at the volcanic edifice. In this paper, we propose Lyapunov theory-based nonlinear guidance scheme to achieve an angle-constrained interception of a high-speed target (targets with speed advantage). An impact angle based classification between head-on and head-pursuit interception geometries is first proposed to uniquely match a desired impact angle to a corresponding desired line-of-sight (LOS) angle for successful target interception. The proposed guidance scheme comprises two phases, namely orientation and LOS tracking phases. The orientation phase corrects the interceptor's lead angle based on the desired interception geometry whenever required. The LOS tracking phase then enables the tracking of desired LOS angle by enforcing the error is LOS angle to converge onto a manifold with finite-time convergent properties. The applicability of the proposed guidance strategy is validated using numerical simulations for various engagement geometries, in the presence of autopilot, for constant speed as well as time-varying speed interceptors. We propose predefined-time consensus-based cooperative guidance laws for a swarm of interceptors to simultaneously capture a target capable of executing various kinds of motions. Unlike leader-follower cooperative guidance techniques, the swarm of interceptors has no leader and each interceptor executes its own guidance command in a distributive fashion, thus obviating the residency of the mission over a single interceptor. We first design cooperative guidance commands subject to target's mobility, followed by the same when the target is stationary, and also account for interceptors' changing topologies. We further show through rigorous analysis that the proposed cooperative guidance laws guarantee consensus in the interceptors' time-to-go values within a predefined-time. The proposed design allows a feasible time of consensus in time-to-go to be set arbitrarily at will during the design regardless of the interceptors' initial time-to-go values, thereby ensuring a simultaneous target interception. Abstract: Mechanical properties of any material are extensively influenced by the parameters such as strain, strain rate, temperature, and its composition. The characteristics of any material such as ductility, strain hardening, strength, dynamic recovery, grain growth, and recrystallization are greatly affected by the influence of various process parameters. So, it is essential to have the knowledge of the constitutive relationships that relate different process variables to flow stress of the deforming material which estimates various parameters such as load, energy, and stress in the metal forming operations. A consistent effort has been gone into developing the constitutive equations for the detailed mathematical description of the flow curves and the aforementioned parameters for years now. Soft computing tools that concern computation of an imprecise environment and model very complex systems those are based on input–output relationship have gained significant attention in recent years. The intricacies of the mathematical modeling of the mechanical properties of the material, enticed the artificial research community to take this as a challenge. One such soft computing tool neural network is applied in this field to predict the behavior accurately. In this paper, a hybrid neural network model better known as RSONFN (Recurrent Self-Organizing Neural Network Model) is applied to predict the flow stress for carbon steels. The RSONFN is having the advantages of the well-established technologies of the artificial intelligence tools such as Fuzzy logic to capture long range data sets and neural networks. The RSONFN structure is a dynamic one as the numbers of its layers as well as the numbers of nodes in each layer of the network are not predetermined. Such an attribute differentiate it from the Multilayer perceptron which is having static structure. The results obtained by this network prove its superiority over other existing tools. Specimens from nickel-based clad pipeline girth welds were tested in H 2 S solution. The results of the fatigue crack growth rate curve at higher Δ K values were about 4 times higher than the in-air values. The rate at 180 °C was generally higher than the in-air data for flaw assessments found in the British Standard BS7910 by a factor of up to 3 times. From the analyses of the diffusible hydrogen, the backing steel of such pipelines are predominantly protected from the sour environment by the corrosion-resistant alloy clad layer. Tensile and fracture tests were performed on nickel-based alloy clad pipelines girth welds using customised rigs to elevate the temperature. Fracture tests were performed using single edged notched bend (SENB) and single edged notched tension (SENT) specimens, both with notch depth ratio of 0.2. The tensile test results showed reduction in strength at elevated temperatures for base metal, weld metal and clad metal while the fracture resistance reduced by up to 0.6 times depending on the notch location and the specimen geometry. Finite element method was used to document the effects of temperature, environment, crack location and weld strength mis-match on the fracture capacity of modern pipeline girth welds. The results demonstrated a marginal reduction (>0.83 times) in the crack driving force for pipelines operating in a sour environment or at elevated temperatures or for cracks located in the weld centerline than at the fusion line. The crack driving force is lower for under-matching than over-matching welds. Furthermore, the numerical method was compared with analytical method as per BS7910 and the results showed that the latter was more conservative for deeper cracks ( a / t > 0.4). Forests are important biomes covering a major part of the vegetation on the Earth, and as such account for seventy percent of the carbon present in living beings. The value of a forest’s above ground biomass (AGB) is considered as an important parameter for the estimation of global carbon content. In the present study, the quad-pol ALOS-PALSAR data was used for the estimation of AGB for the Dudhwa National Park, India. For this purpose, polarimetric decomposition components and an Extended Water Cloud Model (EWCM) were used. The PolSAR data orientation angle shifts were compensated for before the polarimetric decomposition. The scattering components obtained from the polarimetric decomposition were used in the Water Cloud Model (WCM). The WCM was extended for higher order interactions like double bounce scattering. The parameters of the EWCM were retrieved using the field measurements and the decomposition components. Finally, the relationship between the estimated AGB and measured AGB was assessed. Tensile and fracture specimens (pre-charged with H 2 S) were tested in solution using customised rigs. When comparing with uncharged specimens, the tensile test results showed significant reduction in ductility for base and weld metal. The fracture resistance test results showed similar reduction of ∼0.3 times in base and weld metals and heat affected zone. There was noticeable increase in yield and tensile strength in both base and weld metals, due to the effect of hydrogen. When using partially coated specimens, higher fracture resistance was obtained, with reduction of ∼0.4 times only. This was mainly contributed by crack tip hydrogen and less so by the bulk hydrogen. This paper addresses the problem of controlling impact time against various types of target – stationary, constant velocity, or maneuvering. Analytical expression of time-to-go, that is exact for non-maneuvering target but approximate for maneuvering ones, is first presented based on true-proportional-navigation guidance concepts. Guidance strategies are then derived, using Lyapunov theory, to meet impact time constraints, without linearizing the engagement dynamics. Hence, the proposed strategies remain effective even for large initial heading errors. Further, a cooperative guidance strategy to achieve simultaneous target interception by multiple interceptors is also proposed. Guidance commands that ensure consensus among the time-to-go values of the interceptors are utilized for this purpose. Using judicious choices of gains, the common time of target interception may be either pre-fixed, or the same may be decided cooperatively during the engagement. Stability analysis of the possible equilibria in heading angle dynamics, for different choices of parameters, is also performed. Abstract: Analysis of a fuel processor based on methanol steam reforming has been carried out to produce fuel cell grade H2. Six reactor configurations namely FBR1 (fixed bed reactor), MR1 (H2 selective membrane reactor with one reaction tube), MR2 (H2 selective membrane reactor with two reaction tubes), FBR2 (FBR1+preferential CO oxidation (PROX) reactor), MR3 (MR1+PROX), and MR4 (MR2+PROX) are evaluated by simulation to identify the suitable processing scheme. The yield of H2 is significantly affected by H2 selective membrane, residence time, temperature, and pressure conditions at complete methanol conversion. The enhancement in residence time in MR2 by using two identical reaction tubes provides H2 yield of 2.96 with 91.25mol% recovery at steam/methanol ratio of 1.5, pressure of 2bar and 560K temperature. The exit retentate gases from MR2 are further treated in PROX reactor of MR4 to reduce CO concentration to 4.1ppm to ensure the safe discharge to the environment. The risk of carbon deposition on reforming catalyst is highly reduced in MR4, and MR4 reactor configuration generates 7.4NLmin−1 of CO free H2 from 0.12molmin−1 of methanol which can provide 470W PEMFC feedstock requirement. This work proposes two different cooperative integrated guidance and control schemes for a group of interceptors, each steered by combined effects of canard and tail aerodynamic surfaces, aiming a simultaneous interception of a non-maneuvering target. The first approach is based on a leader-follower framework, in which the time of interception can be prescribed before homing, while the second approach is of a leaderless framework, in which the time of interception is decided during engagement. The proposed integrated guidance and control design for multi-body engagement is carried out under nonlinear settings, with time-to-go formulations that relax the restrictive assumption of interceptors' small heading angles. This facilitates wide applicability of the proposed design in scenarios necessitating large terminal time requirements. In addition to the nonlinearity in kinematics of engagement and interceptors' dynamics, effect of actuators are also considered, making the design suitable for practical implementation. Since canard and tail aerodynamic surfaces have different capabilities, a weighted effort allocation scheme is devised to apportion the total effort in both control surfaces in a suitable manner. Abstract: The thermodynamic analysis of steam reforming of methanol without and with fractional removal of H2 and CO2 in adsorption, membrane and adsorption-membrane hybrid reactor systems to produce fuel cell grade H2 with minimal carbon formation is investigated. The results indicate that the removal of undesired CO2 by CO2 adsorbent is most effective process for the production of high purity H2 than H2 removal by membrane. However, the membrane is effective only above 30% H2 removal. It is possible to obtain H2 yield of 2.6 with negligibly small amount of CO and carbon formation at T = 405 K, P = 1 atm, 80% removal of CO2 and 100% methanol conversion. Identical results are achieved even at lower temperature of 345 K in adsorption-membrane hybrid reactor system at 80% removal of H2 and CO2. Abstract: In this communication exact analytical solution of the well known Saeman''s model equation, which is used to find the bed depth profile of the granular material flowing in a rotary kiln, has been obtained. Mathematically this model equation is characterized by a first order nonlinear ordinary differential equation and the exact analytical solution has been obtained in terms of an implicit form of elementary transcendental function by following the methods of separation of variables and partial fraction decomposition. To the best of the authors'' knowledge, this is perhaps the first attempt towards obtaining the exact analytical solution for the above model equation. The results obtained by using the exact analytical solution have been successfully verified against those obtained by using the numerical method and are found to be superior to those obtained by using the existing approximate analytical solutions. Besides, the exact analytical solution has also been fruitfully employed to simulate various experimental results available in literature. Studies of the lunar surface from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data have played a prominent role in the exploration of the lunar surface in recent times. This study uses data from SAR sensors from three Moon missions: Chandrayaan-1 Mini-SAR, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Mini-RF and Chandrayaan-2 Dual Frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar (DFSAR). DFSAR sensor is the first of its kind to operate at L-band and S-band in fully and hybrid polarimetric modes. Due to the availability of only L-band data out of the two bands (L-and S-band) for the study site, this study only used DFSAR's L-band data. The dielectric characterization and polarimetric analysis of the lunar north polar crater Hermite-A was performed in this study using Chandrayaan-1 Mini-SAR, LRO Mini-RF and Chandrayaan-2 DFSAR data. Hermite-A lies in the Permanently Shadowed Region (PSR) of the lunar north pole and whose PSR ID is NP_879520_3076780. Because of its location within the PSR of the lunar north pole, the Hermite-A makes an ideal candidate for a probable location of water-ice deposits. This work utilizes S-band hybrid polarimetric data of Mini-SAR and Mini-RF and L-band fully polarimetric data of DFSAR for the lunar north polar crater Hermite-A. This study characterizes the scattering mechanisms from three decomposition techniques of Hybrid Polarimetry namely m-delta, m-chi, and m-alpha decompositions, and for fully polarimetric data Barnes decomposition technique was applied which is based on wave dichotomy. Eigenvector and Eigenvalue-based decomposition model (H-A-Alpha decomposition) was also applied to characterize the scattering behavior of the crater. This study utilizes the hybrid-pol and fully polarimetric data-based Integral Equation Model (IEM) to retrieve the values of dielectric constant for Hermite-A crater. The dielectric constant values for the Hermite-A crater from Chandrayaan-1 Mini-SAR and LRO Mini-RF are similar, which goes further in establishing the presence of water-ice in the region. The values of the dielectric constant for Chandrayaan-2 in some regions of the crater especially on the left side of the crater is also around 3 but overall the range is relatively higher than the compact/hybrid polarimetric data. The dielectric characterization and polarimetric analysis of the Hermite-A indicatively illustrate that the crater may have surface ice clusters in its walls and on some areas of the crater floor, which can be explored in the future from the synergistic use of remote sensing data and in-situ experiments to confirm the presence of the surface ice clusters. Abstract: The present work describes the optimization of medium variables for the production of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) [P(3HB-co-3HV)] by Azohydromonas lata MTCC 2311 using cane molasses supplemented with propionic acid. Genetic algorithm (GA) has been used for the optimization of P(3HB-co-3HV) production through the simulation of artificial neural network (ANN) and response surface methodology (RSM). The predictions by ANN are better than those of RSM and in good agreement with experimental findings. The highest P(3HB-co-3HV) concentration and 3HV content have been reported as 7.35g/l and 16.84mol%, respectively by hybrid ANN–GA. Upon validation, 7.20g/l and 16.30mol% of P(3HB-co-3HV) concentration and 3HV content have been found in the shake flask, whereas 6.70g/l and 16.35mol%, have been observed in a 3l bioreactor, respectively. The specific growth rate and P(3HB-co-3HV) accumulation rate of 0.29 per h and 0.16g/lh determined with cane molasses are comparable to those observed on pure substrates. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Many problems of physical and engineering sciences are described by singular boundary value problems (SBVPs). Due to the presence of singularity, these problems pose difficulties in obtaining their solutions, and various solution schemes have been proposed to overcome these difficulties. The present work is concerned with the application of one such recently developed method, namely optimal homotopy analysis method (OHAM), to solve SBVPs. The OHAM has certain advantages: (i) it is a general method, (ii) contains an adjustable parameter to control the convergence of solution, and (iii) for certain choices of auxiliary quantities, its working resembles with those of other similar methods. The effectiveness of the OHAM has been evaluated by successfully solving two SBVPs given in recent literature as well a SBVP related to the reaction–diffusion process in a spherical catalyst. Abstract: Biodegradation of resorcinol and p-cresol using fungus Gliomastix indicus MTCC 3869 was investigated in batch culture experiments at 28°C temperature and pH of 6 in the medium up to the initial concentration of 1300mg/L and 700mg/L for resorcinol and p-cresol, respectively. Five specific growth kinetic models and five specific degradation rate models were fitted to the experimental data in order to get best fitted kinetic models. The variation of observed growth yield and maintenance energy requirement with the initial substrate concentration was also studied. The model for maintenance energy coefficient was fitted to the experimental data. The model parameters were: m 1 =0.0135h−1, k =0.054, μ max =0.132h−1 for resorcinol and m 1 =0.0229h−1, k =0.011, μ max =0.102h−1 for p-cresol. Two mathematical models comprising of two sets of ODE were solved simultaneously to get degradation profiles with time. Abstract: This study uses econometric models to measure the effect of significant wave height and wind strength on the probability of casualty and tests whether these effects changed. While both effects are in particular relevant for stability and strength calculations of vessels, it is also helpful for the development of ship construction standards in general to counteract increased risk resulting from changing oceanographic conditions. The authors analyzed a unique dataset of 3.2 million observations from 20,729 individual vessels in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions gathered during the period 1979–2007. The results show that although there is a seasonal pattern in the probability of casualty especially during the winter months, the effect of wind strength and significant wave height do not follow the same seasonal pattern. Additionally, over time, significant wave height shows an increasing effect in January, March, May and October while wind strength shows a decreasing effect, especially in January, March and May. The models can be used to simulate relationships and help understand the relationships. This is of particular interest to naval architects and ship designers as well as multilateral agencies such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that establish global standards in ship design and construction. Abstract: The modelling study on simultaneous adsorption of phenol and resorcinol onto granular activated carbon (GAC) in multicomponent solution was carried out at 303K by conducting batch experiments at initial concentration range of 100–1000mg/l. Three equilibrium isotherm models for multicomponent adsorption studies were considered. In order to determine the parameters of multicomponent adsorption isotherms, individual adsorption studies of phenol and resorcinol on GAC were also carried out. The experimental data of single and multicomponent adsorption were fitted to these models. The parameters of multicomponent models were estimated using error minimization technique on MATLAB R2007a. It has been observed that for low initial concentration of adsorbate (100–200mg/l), modified Langmuir model represents the data very well with the adsorption constant (Q 0), 216.1, 0.032 and average relative error (ARE) of 8.34, 8.31 for phenol and resorcinol respectively. Whereas, for high initial concentration of adsorbate (400–1000mg/l), extended Freundlich model represents the data very well with adsorption constant (K F) of 25.41, 24.25 and ARE of 7.0, 6.46 for phenol and resorcinol respectively. Abstract: A one-dimensional non-isothermal model for oxygen permeable membrane reactor has been developed to simulate the partial oxidation of methane to produce hydrogen. The performance of two fixed bed reactors (FBRs) viz. one with pure O2 in feed (FBR1), other with air in feed (FBR2), and a membrane reactor (MR) having air in non-reaction side have been studied at various feed conditions and inlet temperatures in order to investigate the effect of these parameters on conversion of methane and yield of hydrogen. In this paper, a nonlinear suboptimal three-dimensional guidance strategy based on a finite-time state-dependent Riccati equation technique is proposed to achieve interception of a non-maneuvering target at a desired impact time. To design the proposed guidance, range error for a spatial engagement between an interceptor and non-maneuvering target is introduced as the difference between the desired range-to-go and range-to-go of the predicted interception point. It is shown that forcing the range error and its rate to the origin are sufficient to achieve impact time constrained interception. Several existing impact time guidance strategies require a time-to-go estimate, to implement their guidance command, which may become erroneous in the presence of measurement noise and affect their performance. However, the proposed guidance does not require any such time-to-go estimate in its design process. Furthermore, guidance for the case of planar engagements is shown to be a special case of the proposed guidance scheme. Finally, numerical simulation studies for multiple engagement geometries, along with a comparison study with an existing strategy, are provided to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed technique. Different formulations of time-to-go, without the restrictive assumption of interceptor's small heading angle, have been used in deriving the guidance commands, allowing the proposed strategy to remain effective over a wide range of impact time values. This paper deals with nonsingular guidance and control design for an interceptor, using a decoupled approach, steered by the combined effects of both canard and tail, to intercept a moving but non-maneuvering target at a time specified a priori. First, interceptor's desired lateral acceleration, consisting of nominal and corrective components, is derived using deviated pursuit guidance. While the nominal component is the pursuit guidance law, the corrective component drives the time-to-go error to zero within a finite-time in an optimal manner. Using a desired error dynamics and a meaningful performance index, the lateral acceleration demand is minimized during the transient phase. With exact knowledge of time-to-go and the consideration of nonlinear kinematic model, the proposed design circumvents the errors arising out of any approximations. Interceptor's canard and tail deflection commands are derived using predefined-time convergent sliding mode control, which allows the autopilot to precisely track the commanded lateral acceleration within a time specified during design. Abstract: The activated carbon was prepared from carbonaceous agriculture waste Parthenium hysterophorous by chemical activation using concentrated H2SO4 at 130±5°C. The prepared activated carbon was characterized and was found as an effective adsorbent material. In order to test the efficacy of parthenium based activated carbon (PAC), batch experiments were performed to carryout the adsorption studies on PAC for the removal of highly toxic pollutant p-cresol from aqueous solution. The p-cresol adsorption studies were also carried out on commercial grade activated carbon (AC) to facilitate comparison between the adsorption capabilities of PAC and AC. For PAC and AC, the predictive capabilities of two types of kinetic models and six types of adsorption equilibrium isotherm models were examined. The effect of pH of solution, adsorbent dose and initial p-cresol concentration on adsorption behaviour was investigated, as well. The adsorption on PAC and on AC was found to follow pseudo-first order kinetics with rate constant 0.0016min−1 and 0.0050min−1, respectively. The highest adsorptive capacity of PAC and AC for p-cresol solution was attained at pH 6.0. Further, as an adsorbent PAC was found to be as good as AC for removal of p-cresol upto a concentration of 500mg/l in aqueous solution. Freundlich, Redlich–Peterson, and Fritz–Schlunder models were found to be appropriate isotherm models for PAC while Toth, Radke–Prausnitz and Fritz–Schlunder were suitable models for AC to remove p-cresol from aqueous solution. Abstract: Biodegradation of p-cresol by a pure culture of new filamentous fungal strain Gliomastix indicus was studied. The fungus strain was acclimatized to the higher concentration of 700mg/l of p-cresol in modified czapeck medium over a period of two months. The lag period was 24h. The shake flask batch experiments were carried out at temperature of 28°C and pH of 6 over a wide range of initial p-cresol concentration (10–700mg/l) keeping initial biomass concentration constant at 18.72mg/l. Experimentally it was observed that p-cresol was inhibitory type substrate and the inhibition effect of p-cresol became predominant above a concentration of 50mg/l. The kinetics of cell growth and p-cresol degradation were investigated. Six kinetic models (Haldane, Andrews, Webb, Yano, Aiba, and Teissier) were fitted to the experimental growth kinetic data. Models by Haldane, Andrews, Webb and Yano (correlation coefficient R 2 >0.99) were found to be most suitable models. In addition, the variation of observed yield coefficient Y X with specific growth rate μ g was investigated. The maintenance energy coefficient and true growth yield coefficient, were found to be 0.0227h−1 and 1.0708(mg/mg), respectively. The specific substrate utilization rate was represented in terms of specific biomass growth rate. The decay coefficient was found to be 0.0055h−1. Abstract: The mathematical modeling of fire growth and smoke movement in any enclosure is a formidable task. Two types of deterministic models are in vogue, zone models and field models (popularly known as CFD technique). CFAST is a popular zone model used for modeling of fires in enclosures. Likewise, CFX is a general purpose CFD code used for various purposes including modeling of fires. In the present paper, a tunnel of length 150m having a rectangular cross-section of 80m2 has been considered for analyzing the temperature and velocity profiles generated by fire, placed at a distance of 20m from one end of portal, by both CFAST and CFX. The simulation by CFAST has been carried out by dividing the tunnel into 1, 2, 5, 8, 10, 12 and 15 compartments of equal size, where these compartments are joined by openings or vents having same cross-section as that of the tunnel. In case of tunnel divided into 15 compartments the fire source position lies at the position of vent; CFAST predicted very high temperatures. The simulations have also been carried out by dividing tunnel into unequal sized compartments such that position of fire was at the center of the compartment. It was found that for accuracy of results, location of fire source inside compartment is an important factor. Computational difficulty was experienced when tunnel was divided into more than 15 compartments. In this paper, a comparative study of temperatures predicted by CFAST and CFX has been done. The CFX and CFAST predictions show that smoke temperature changes with a pattern roughly similar to that of heat release rate. The temperature profiles at selected positions cannot be predicted by CFAST unlike CFX. The detailed features like flame tilt, flow field can only be observed from CFX predictions. Batch studies were carried out for studying the adsorption behaviour of phenol and 4-nitrophenol on granular activated carbon from a basal salt medium (BSM) at pH ≈7.1 and temperature ≈30°C. The literature review was done in order to review the information for comparison purposes on equilibrium models of phenol and 4-nitrophenol adsorption on activated carbon. The units for measurements reported in these models were found to be diverse, thus making the comparison difficult. These units have been converted into similar units for easy reference. In all, six models of Freundlich, Langmuir, Redlich–Peterson, Radke–Prausnitz, Toth and Fritz–Schlunder as reported in the literature have been fitted to the data of phenol/activated carbon and 4-nitrophenol/activated carbon systems of the present studies using nonlinear regression technique. Based on maximum deviations and correlation coefficients, Langmuir gave the poorest fit for both compounds; Redlich–Peterson, Radke–Prausnitz, and four parameter model of Fritz–Schlunder could represent the data with similar accuracy, i.e. with R 2-value of 0.98 and maximum deviation ≈12%. However, for phenol, two parameter model of Freundlich may be recommended because of ease in its parameter estimation and better accuracy. 4-Nitrophenol was found to be more adsorbed than phenol, which is consistent with the result found in literature. The kinetics of the adsorption was found to be intra-particle diffusion controlled with diffusion coefficient values of the order of 10−13 m2/s. Abstract: Modelling of bioreactors employed in solid-state fermentation processes can play a crucial role in the analysis, design and development of bioprocesses based on the phenomena; which encompass a variety of applications ranging from the production of enzymes to the treatment of agro-industrial residues. In the present work, a mathematical model has been developed for a packed bed solid-state fermentation Bioreactor employing the N-tanks in series approach. The model analyses the production of protease enzyme by Aspergillus niger and is validated against an experimental study available in the literature which describes its growth during solid-state fermentation. The primary importance of employing the method is to demonstrate its successful application to the solution of model equations to situations where axial gradients dominate. As a consequence, the approach not only helps in avoiding the use of complex computational methods like orthogonal collocation but also contributes in providing insights to the design of bioreactors.
