Abstract

The HARP resistive plate chamber (RPC) system was designed for time-of-flight measurement in the large-angle acceptance region of the HARP spectrometer. It comprised 46 four-gap glass RPCs covering an area of 8 m 2 . The design of the RPCs, their operation, intrinsic properties, and system performance are described. The intrinsic time resolution of the RPCs is 127 ps leading to a system time-of-flight resolution of 175 ps. It is argued that gross differences between pion and proton timing in multi-gap timing RPCs, reported recently in the literature, do not exist.

Abstract

The HARP spectrometer that took data at the CERN Proton Synchrotron in 2001 and 2002 had as large-angle detector system a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) surrounded by Resistive Plate Chambers. The design of the TPC, experience with its operation, and its good physics performance are described. The successful recovery from track distortions arising from inhomogeneities of the electric and magnetic fields in the TPC volume is discussed.

Abstract

A time-of-flight system based on 46 multigap glass resistive plate chambers has operated for 2 years in the HARP experiment at the CERN PS. The system covers an area of 10m(2) and comprises 368 readout channels. Abstract

The decays W --> ev and Z --> e+e- are studied in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. The products of production cross section and branching ratio are measured as sigma(W)e = 682 +/- 12 +/- 40 pb and sigma(Z)e = 65.6 +/- 4.0 +/- 3.8 pb. The results are in good agreement with O (alpha(s)2) calculations of the production cross sections. Many systematic effects cancel in the ratio, R = 10.4 +/- 0.6(0.7) +/- 0.3, which can be used to give an indirect measurement of the total width of the W boson: GAMMA(W) = 2.10 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.09 GeV. The width gives a limit on the top quark mass, m(top) > 53 GeV (95% CL), which is independent of the top decay mode.

Abstract

Results on the cross section for the production of electron pairs in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV are presented. The measured value is sigma = 405 +/- 51 (syst.) +/- 84 (syst.) pb, in the invariant mass interval 10 < m < 70 GeV. The results are compared to recent theoretical calculations which include O(alpha(s)2) QCD contributions. The comparison of these data with those of lower energy experiments show approximate scaling as a function of the variable square-root tau = m/ square-root s.

Abstract

We report on a direct search in NOMAD for a new 33.9 MeV/c^2 neutral particle (X) produced in pion decay in flight, pi-->mu_X followed by the decay X -->nu e^+e^-. Both decays are postulated to occur to explain the time anomaly observed by the KARMEN experiment. From the analysis of the data collected during the 1996?1998 runs with 4.1×10^19 protons on target, a single candidate event consistent with background expectations was found. The search is sensitive to a pion branching ratio BR(pi-->muX >3.7×10^-15, significantly smaller than previous experimental limits.

Abstract

Results from the nu_tau appearance search in a neutrino beam using the full NOMAD data sample are reported. A new analysis unifies all the hadronic tau decays, significantly improving the overall sensitivity of the experiment to oscillations. The "blind analysis" of all topologies yields no evidence for an oscillation signal. In the two-family oscillation scenario, this sets a 90% C.L. allowed region in the sin^2(2theta)-Delta m^2 plane which includes sin^2(2theta) nu_tau oscillation hypothesis results in sin^2(2theta)

Abstract

Backward proton and $\pi^-$ production has been studied in $\nu_{\mu}CC$ interactions with carbon nuclei. Detailed analyses of the momentum distributions, of the production rates, and of the general features of events with a backward going particle, have been carried out in order to understand the mechanism producing these particles. The backward proton data have been compared with the predictions of the reinteraction and the short range correlation models.

Abstract

The Λ polarization in νμ charged current interactions has been measured in the NOMAD experiment. The event sample (8087 reconstructed Λ 's) is more than an order of magnitude larger than that of previous bubble chamber experiments, while the quality of event reconstruction is comparable. We observe negative polarization along the W -boson direction which is enhanced in the target fragmentation region: Px(xF 0)=−0.09±0.06(stat)±0.03(sys) . These results provide a test of different models describing the nucleon spin composition and the spin transfer mechanisms. A significant transverse polarization (in the direction orthogonal to the Λ production plane) has been observed for the first time in a neutrino experiment: Py=−0.22±0.03(stat)±0.01(sys) . The dependence of the absolute value of Py on the Λ transverse momentum with respect to the hadronic jet direction is in qualitative agreement with the results from unpolarized hadron–hadron experiments.

The $\Lambda$ polarization in $\nu_\mu$ charged current interactions has been measured in the NOMAD experiment. The event sample (8087 reconstructed $\Lambda$'s) is more than an order of magnitude larger than that of previous bubble chamber experiments, while the quality of event reconstruction is comparable. We observe negative polarization along the $W$-boson direction which is enhanced in the target fragmentation region: $P_x (x_F 0) = -0.21 \pm 0.04 \mbox{(stat)} \pm 0.02 \mbox{(sys)}$. In the current fragmentation region we find $P_x (x_F 0) = -0.09 \pm 0.06 \mbox{(stat)} \pm 0.03 \mbox{(sys)}$. These results provide a test of different models describing the nucleon spin composition and the spin transfer mechanisms. Abstract

In the context of a two-flavour approximation we reinterpret the published NOMAD limit on ν μ → ν τ oscillations in terms of ν e → ν τ oscillations. At 90% C.L. we obtain sin 2 2θ eτ 5.2×10 −2 for large Δm 2 , while for sin 2 2 θ eτ =1 the confidence region includes Δm 2 2 / c 4 .

Abstract

With additional data and improved algorithms, we have enhanced the sensitivity of our appearance search for $\numunutau$ oscillations in the NOMAD detector in the CERN-SPS wide-band neutrino beam. The search uses kinematic criteria to identify $\nutau$ charged current interactions followed by decay of the $\tau^-$ to one of several decay modes. Our ``blind'' analyses of deep-inelastic scattering data taken in 1996 and 1997, combined with consistent reanalyses of previously reported 1995 data, yield no oscillation signal. For the two-family oscillation scenario, we present the contour outlining a 90\% C.L. confidence region in the $\sin^22\theta_{\mu \tau} - \Delta m^2$ plane. At large $\Delta m^2$, the confidence region includes $\sin^22\theta_{\mu\tau}\ \ 1.2\times10^{-3}$ (a limit 3.5 times more stringent than in our previous publication), while at $\sin^22\theta_{\mu \tau}=1$, the confidence region includes $\Delta m^2 1.2$ eV$^2$/$c^4$.

Abstract

By focusing on the notion of electronic document, we differentiate two evolutions which are useful to distinct titles: on the one hand are the documents, which have value of reference. Its administrator will take care to preserve its integrity and its context of production which is strongly significant. On the other hand are resources, evolutionary elements by nature, which the user must be able to appropriate and who must thus be placed at the disposal so that the production is erased, to focus on a logic of exploitation and service.

Abstract

NOMAD is a neutrino oscillation experiment designed to search for ντ appearance in the CERN-SPS wide band νμ beam. Signal detection relies on the identification of ντ charged current interactions using kinematic criteria. The analysis of the 1995 data sample yields no oscillation signal. Combining all studied τ decay modes, a limit of sin 2 2θ μτ 4.2×10 −3 is obtained for large Δm2 at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract

A report is given of the experimental studies on lead/fibre calorimetry of the RD1 research and development project. To match the LHC physics requirements for a highly segmented and accurate electromagnetic energy measurement and for an acceptable hadronic performance, the 1992 RD1 program opted for longitudinally segmented calorimeter prototypes. The electromagnetic prototypes comprised 4 × 4 cm 2 cells with a high sampling fraction of 1.8:1. Coarse hadronic prototypes were constructed using 1 mm fibres inserted in 3 mm diameter plastic tubes. The production procedures are discussed and test beam results are presented. Reports are also given on calibration studies, on radiation hardness studies and on the development and tests of new light detectors.

Abstract

A measurement of the gluon structure fusion using direct photon events observed with the UA2 detector in p p collisions at √ s =630 GeV is presented. The x -range covered by this analysis is between 0.049 and 0.207 and the Q 2 range is between 280 GeV 2 and 3670 GeV 2 . The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 7.14 pb −1 . The results are found to be in good agreement with the gluon distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering experiments extrapolated to the UA2 Q 2 values.

Abstract

The lateral profile of the energy deposition in a prototype of a lead and scintillating fiber calorimeter, constructed in the framework of the LAA project at CERN, has been measured for both electromagnetic and hadronic showers in the energy range from 5 to 150 GeV. The distributions are well described by analytic functions whose parameters allow one to determine the radial scaling of the shower development. In the electromagnetic case, the data are compared to Monte Carlo calculations. Estimates of the lateral leakage outside of the detector are made as well as calculations of the average π 0 content of hadronic showers and event-to-event fluctuations in this electromagnetic component. A method is developed whereby knowledge of the hadronic shower profile can be used to determine the relative calibration constants of neighboring towers in such a calorimeter.

The process pp→evγ+X is studied as √s=630 GeV. The observed signal is used to extract a direct measurement of the parameters κ and λ which define the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the W boson and therefore the WWγ coupling. We find κ=1+2.6−2.2 and λ=0+1.7−1.8 and their 95% confidence limits −3.5

Abstract

A search has been made for scalar leptoquark pair production with the upgraded UA2 detector at the CERN p p Collider at √s = 630 GeV, investigating decays of the leptoquark into a quark and either an electron or an electron neutrino. From an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13 pb−1 a lower limit has been determined for the mass of first generation leptoquarks, yielding 67 GeV (95% CL) for a scalar leptoquark decaying with a 50% branching ratio into a quark and an electron.

Abstract

The large sample of W→eν events collected by the UA2 experiment at the CERN pp collider between 1988 and 1990 has been used to determine the strong coupling constant α s . From a measurement of the ratio of the production rate of W events with one jet to that with no jets, α s has been extracted to second order in the MS scheme: α s (M 2 w )=0.123±0.0.18( stat .)±0.017 ( syst .) .

Abstract

The UA2 experiment has collected large samples of W and Z events during recent runs at the CERN p p Collider at s = 630 GeV . These samples have been used to perform precise measurements of the masses of the W and Z bosons. After a careful analysis of systematic errors, an improved result is obtained for the mass ratio mwmz. This provides a new value for the weak mixing parameter sin2θw. Furthermore, it can be combined with recent measurements of the Z mass from e+e− colliders to give an absolute measurement of the W mass, leading to the result mw=80.49±0.43 (stat) ± 0.24 (syst) GeV.

Abstract

Two high statistics measurements of antiproton-proton small-angle elastic scattering, at p = 233 MeV/c and p = 272 MeV/c, are presented. The measurements were carried out at the LEAR facility at CERN. By the Coulomb-nuclear interference method, values are obtained for the real-to-imaginary ratio ρ of the pp forward nuclear scattering amplitude and for its exponential slope b: ρ = + 0.041 ± 0.026 and b = 71.5 ± 4.5 (GeV/c)−2 at 233 MeV/c and ρ = −0.014 ± 0.027 and b = 47.7 ± 2.7 (GeV/c)−2 at 272 MeV/c. The method to derive these values is discussed in detail and so are the uncertainties contributing to their systematic error. The results are compared with predictions from forward dispersion relation calculations and with predictions from pp potential models.

Abstract

Results are reported on the azimuthal asymmetry of antiprotons of ∼550 MeV / c , doubly scattered at small angles from protons and carbon. The measured asymmetries are small, statistically compatible with zero, and give polarization parameters smaller than those foreseen by some N N potential models.

Abstract

Measurements have been made of the differential cross section and asymmetry Aon for pp elastic scattering at 15 incident momenta between 497 MeV/c and 1550 MeV/c. The angular range where both particles have enough energy to traverse target and setup has been covered. The results are compared with predictions of various NN potential models. None of these models fully explains the present results, although the general trend of the data is predicted correctly.

Abstract

Analysing power and differential cross-section have been measured for the reactions p p →π − π + , p p →K − K + by the SING Collaboration (PS172) at LEAR, using a polarized target. Preliminary results of Aon are presented, at 12 momenta from 500 to 1500 MeV/c. They show very large asymmetries, and a remarkable variation with energy in the newly explored low momentum region.

Abstract

We describe a simple but sensitive method for measurement of the mechanical resonance frequency - and thus of the tension - of wires in a wire chamber. An ac voltage of variable frequency is applied to the capacitor formed by the wire under investigation and a fixed electrode. The periodic change of the capacitance due to vibration of the wire results in a third-harmonic component in the current. Measurement of this third-harmonic signal provides a precise determination of the resonance frequency.

Abstract

We describe the construction and performance of a set of small wire chambers for the detection of elastically scattered particles at the CERN p p Collider. A chamber contains four drift planes followed by a multiwire proportional plane with charge division readout. The chamber wall facing the beam axis of the Collider consists of a thin plate with field restoring strips that keep the resolution and efficiency of the chamber nearly unchanged to within one millimeter from the wall. The intrinsic resolution of the drift planes is ∼ 80 μm per wire while after track reconstruction an accuracy per wire of ∼ 100 μm is obtained. The accuracy of the charge division is ∼ 0.4 mm over a wire length of 64 mm. This number includes uncertainties in the calibration of the readout electronics.

A large scintillating-fibre detector consisting of ≈ 60 000 scintillating plastic fibres of 1 mm diameter and 2.4 m length has been used successfully as a tracking and preshower detector in the UA2 experiment at CERN. The detector readout and the results from the p p data-taking run are described.
