To evaluate the effectiveness of motivational interviewing (MI) for COPD in behavioral changes and health outcomes, and also verify the reliability of results in conjunction with trial sequential analysis and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation tool.Studies that implemented MI interventions for COPD patients were systematically searched by eight databases from inception to December 2021. Study screening, quality assessment, data extraction, and meta-analysis were conducted according to Cochrane standards.Twenty-one studies involving 2344 patients were included. The results of meta-analyses indicated that MI made significant improvement in self-efficacy, lung function, quality of life, emotion, and COPD-related admission, but not in self-management and exercise capacity. Subgroup analyses found that the intervention duration was inversely associated with effect size for both self-efficacy and negative emotion severity. The trial sequential analysis showed MI improved patients' lung function and reduced COPD-related hospitalization with certainty, but the findings for exercise capacity need to be confirmed by further research.This systematic review suggested the positive effects of MI on self-efficacy, lung function, quality of life, emotion and COPD-related hospitalization. l -kynurenine (L-kyn) is a marker of prostate cancer. At present, the expensive instruments are usually applied to detect L-kyn in clinically, which limits its wide application for cancer diagnosis. Herein, three lanthanide metal–organic frameworks ([Ln(CHO2)3]n, Ln = Eu, Gd, and Tb) were designed and obtained, and detailly characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and luminescence spectroscopy. Further study reveals that [Tb(CHO2)3]n is a highly selective, ultra-sensitive, of strong anti-interference, highly stable, and non-expensive sensor for prostate cancer marker L-kyn. The limit of detection (LOD) for L-kyn sensing is a highly sensitive value of 1.0 × 10−9 mol/L. Furthermore, the sensing mechanism is discussed in detail.

In order to better utilize the citrus pectin (CP) resource, the crude citrus pectin (CCP), obtained from the citrus fruit canning processing waste water, was purified by cellulose DEAE-52 column, providing neutral polysaccharide CP0 and two acidic polysaccharides (CP1 and CP3). CP1 had the highest yield among the three fractions, being 44.29%. The chemical composition, structure and morphology of these pectin components were analyzed. Monosaccharide composition analysis revealed that arabinose was the most abundant composition in these pectin samples. CCP, CP1 and CP3 were mainly composed of rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) regions. Compared with CP3, CCP and CP1 had longer side chains, which are mainly consisted of arabinose. FT-IR and NMR analysis indicated that α-type glycosidic bonds are the main linkage in the four pectin components. These CP samples were found to possess different conformation, but no triple-helical conformation was observed in all these CP fractions. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that CCP, CP1 and CP3 all had irregular sheet-like structures and partly porous structures. The four pectin components showed the characteristics of non-Newtonian fluids and possessed good viscoelasticity. Due to these properties, the pectin might have potential application in food industry as food thickening agent.

The exploitation of a highly selective and sensitive probe to detect both cancer marker and metal ion is of great importance. In this work, the “one stone two bird” agent of 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) is designed to disrupt the polymeric lanthanide MOFs (LnMOFs, [Ln(CHO2)3]n, Ln = Tb, 1a; Eu, 1b, CHO2 = formic acid) {[Ln(CHO2)4·(C2H8N)]n, Ln = Y, 2a; Gd, 2b; Dy, 2c, C2H8N = dimethylamine}) into a soluble mononuclear species [Ln(phen)2(NO3)3, Ln = Tb, 3a; Eu, 3b] as well as to provide an antenna for efficient photons absorption, resulting in an ultra-high luminescence quantum yield (QY, 90%) europium complex. The luminescence QY is among the highest record of monomeric (zero-dimensional) lanthanide complexes. Furthermore, mononuclear Tb3+ complex (3a) functions as a multiplex sensor towards both Fe2+ and cancer marker of 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-HIAA). Importantly, the limit of detection (LOD) for sensing 5-HIAA is an ultra-sensitive value of 1 × 10−8 mol/L, which is even lower than that necessary for the early diagnosis of carcinoid tumors. More interestingly, sensing results in simulated urine reveals that 3a has potential application for early diagnosis in the clinic.

Biodiversity experiments have shown that high species richness increases productivity in forests. However, forests are diverse regarding community composition. It is unclear how species identity and species composition could contribute to the variation of productivity and how their effects interact with species richness. Here we used data from a 9-year-old planted forest experiment with 40 species to test the effects of species identity and species composition on productivity. The plots in the experiment were designed with various compositions across richness levels. We found that for the top 25 species compositions with the highest volume increment there were six monocultures (24%), eight 2-species mixtures (32%) and eleven 4-species mixtures (44%). Schima superba monoculture had the highest volume in the last study year and highest volume increment over five years, while 2-species and 4-species mixtures with Nyssa sinensis or Liquidambar formosana resulted in high average above-ground volume accumulation. Most of the high-productivity species were deciduous with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) associations. In addition, the percentage of AM species in plots had a positive significant effect on both above-ground volume in 2018 and increment from 2013 to 2018. While the percentage of evergreen species showed no significant effect on above-ground volume increment, it did significantly decrease the above-ground volume in 2018. Overall, our results encourage reforestation management to consider species identity and species compositions of deciduous and/or AM species, such as Schima superba, Nyssa sinensis or Liquidambar formosana in the studied subtropical area, if the purpose is to enhance ecosystem productivity.

Graphene (Gr) is a monolayer of carbon atoms in a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice, and has derivatives of graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide. Gr is widely used in various fields for its good optics, conductivity, mechanical properties, low toxicity, antibacterial properties, biocompatibility and stability. Graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide have similar properties to Gr, and all three materials have advantages and disadvantages and are often not used alone but are composited with other materials to improve their properties for a particular application. From the perspectives of the toxicity and antibacterial properties of Gr and its derivatives, this paper reviews their uses in treating skin wounds and tumours, promoting the regeneration of skeletal muscle and bone, and facilitating drug loading and diagnosis. The problems associated with these applications are analyzed and solutions are suggested. Future research and development prospects for Gr-based materials are presented.

Rural land consolidation (RLC) is beneficial to rural development to a certain extent. While acknowledging this relationship, little is known about the extent of the impact of RLC on rural vitalization at the village level and its change. Based on the theoretical analytical framework and multi-source data, this study adopts field investigation and GIS technology in Jinzhuang Village, China, to qualitatively reveal how RLC affects rural development and quantitatively analyze the effectiveness of RLC on local vitalization. The results show that greenhouse-led RLC promotes the spatial restructuring and industrial transformation of Jinzhuang Village. In this process, the restructuring of production-living-ecological space is mutually reinforced and restrictive, and compared with the decrease of the ecological space, the production space has gradually expanded and the living space has increased slightly. On the whole, RLC has boosted the development level of Jinzhuang Village. However, its main contribution lies in the socio-economic aspects, at the expense of the ecological environment, and its positive and negative effects, based on the quantitative analysis, on cultural development almost cancel each other out. Additionally, working in greenhouses for years poses a health risk to tomato farmers. Based on the above analysis and discussion, policy recommendations are provided.

Manganese (Mn) contamination limits the production and quality of crops, and affects human health by disrupting the food chain. Arabis paniculata is a pioneer species of Brassicaceae found in mining areas, and has the ability to accumulate heavy metals. However, little is known about the genetic mechanisms of Mn tolerance in Arabis paniculata. In this study, we found that Mn tolerance and ability to accumulate Mn were higher in Arabis paniculata than in Arabidopsis thaliana. The mechanisms underlying the response and recovery of Arabis paniculata to Mn toxicity were further investigated using transcriptome analysis. A total of 69,862,281 base pair clean reads were assembled into 61,627 high-quality unigenes, of which 41,591 (67.5%) and 39,297 (63.8%) were aligned in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Gene Ontology (GO), respectively. In response to Mn toxicity, genes were expressed in twelve distinct patterns, which can be divided into four general categories: initial, stable, dose-dependent, and lineage. Genes that were differentially expressed during Mn response and recovery belong to several dominant KEGG pathways. An early response to Mn toxicity in Arabis paniculata includes the upregulation of genes involved in glutathione metabolism. ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter proteins were up-regulated during the entire response phase, and genes involved in glycerophospholipid metabolism were up-regulated during the late phase of the Mn response. Genes in the phenylpropanoid pathway were differentially expressed in the repair process after Mn treatment. These findings reveal ideal material and genetic resources for phytoremediation in Mn-contaminated areas and highlight new knowledge and theoretical perspectives on the mechanisms of Mn tolerance.

The single von Willebrand factor C-domain proteins (SVWCs) are mainly found in arthropods. Their expression may be regulated by several environmental stresses, including nutritional status and bacterial and viral infections. However, the underlying regulatory mechanism is unclear. In the present study, we identified a member of the SVWC family from the river prawn Macrobrachium nipponense as a soluble and bacteria-inducible pattern-recognition receptor (designated MnSVWC). In vitro, recombinant MnSVWC exhibited pronounced binding and Ca2+-dependent agglutinating abilities against diverse microbes, including Gram-negative bacteria (i.e. Escherichia coli and Aeromonas victoria), Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis), and yeast (Pichia pastoris). ELISA assays revealed that recombinant MnSVWC recognizes a broad range of various pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and has high affinity to lipopolysaccharide and lysine-type and diaminopimelic acid-type peptidylglycan and d-galactose and low affinity to d-mannan and β-1,3-glucan. Mutant MnSVWCP57A with an impaired Glu-Pro-Asn (EPN) motif displayed reduced affinity to all these PAMPs to varying extent. Moreover, MnSVWC bound to the surface of hemocytes and promoted their phagocytic activity and clearance of invasive bacteria. RNAi-mediated MnSVWC knockdown in prawn reduced the ability to clear invading bacteria, but did not block the activities of the Toll pathway or the arthropod immune deficiency (IMD) pathway, or the expression of antimicrobial peptide genes. These results indicate that MnSVWC functions as an extracellular pattern-recognition receptor in M. nipponense that mediates cellular immune responses by recognizing PAMPs, agglutinating invasive microbes, and promoting phagocytosis in hemocytes.

Fibrinogen-related proteins (FREPs) are widely found in both vertebrates as well as invertebrates, and they play a crucial role in host immunity. In this study, we isolated a novel ficolin gene (Mnfico3) from the oriental river prawn Macrobrachium nipponense. The complete cDNA sequence of Mnfico3 was 1133 bp long, containing an open reading frame of 765 bp coding for Mnfico3, a protein consisting of 254 amino acids. The Mnfico3 protein contained a putative N-terminal signal peptide and a fibrinogen-related protein domain present at the C-terminal. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that Mnfico3 had a closer evolutionary relationship with vertebrate ficolins than with its invertebrate homologues. Tissue distribution analysis indicated that Mnfico3 was predominantly expressed in muscle, in which its transcription was increased following bacterial challenge by Aeromonas veronii. Function analysis using recombinant protein revealed that rMnFico3 had broad-spectrum binding capacity to a variety of microorganisms and pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) ligands. Furthermore, rMnFico3 exhibited Ca2+-dependent agglutinating activity against microbes in vitro, and ability to attach to the hemocyte surface which promoted phagocytosis and subsequent clearance of invasive bacteria in vivo. Silencing rMnFico3 in prawn through RNAi did not alter the expression of antimicrobial peptide genes (ALF and Crustin). These results manifested that MnFico3 functioned as a potential pattern recognition receptor (PPR) to mediate cellular immune response by recognizing PAMPs, agglutinating invasive microbes, and promoting phagocytosis of hemocytes.

Anti-lipopolysaccharide factors (ALFs), as main host-defense molecules of crustaceans, form a unique family of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). MnALF4 is one isoform of ALFs isolated from the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium nipponense. In the present study, MnALF4 gene was successfully expressed in the yeast Pichia pastoris and the recombinant MnALF4 protein exhibited efficient and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activities against both Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria in vitro. When prawns were injected with rMnALF4 before bacterial challenge with E. coli, the recombinant protein effectively promote the elimination of bacteria by the host. It manifested that rMnALF4 could effectively kill the invading bacteria in vivo. Treatment with rMnALF4 led to remarkable changes in bacterial morphology, such as spheroidization, oversized bacteria, and cell lysis. In addition, rMnALF4 showed weak hemolysis activity to the rabbit red blood cells. Our work suggests that MnALF4 plays an important role in Macrobrachium immunity and is worthy of further investigation as a potential antibacterial agent with high efficacy against bacterial infection and low toxicity to host cells.

Sustainable municipal solid waste (MSW) management is regarded as one of the key elements for achieving urban sustainability via mitigating global climate change, recycling resources and recovering energy. Landfill is considered as the least preferable disposal method and the EU Landfill Directive (ELD) announced in 1999 requires member countries to reduce the volume of landfilled biodegradable materials. The enforcement of ELD initiated the evolution of MSW management system UK. This study depicted and assessed the transition and performance of MSW management after the millennium in Nottingham via materials flow analysis (MFA), as well as appropriately selected indicators based on the concept of waste management hierarchy and targets set in waste management regulations. We observed improvements in waste reduction, material recycling, energy recovery, and landfill prevention. During the period 2001/02 to 2016/17, annual waste generation reduced from 463 kg/Ca to 361 kg/Ca, the recycling and composting share increased from 4.6% to 44.4%, and the landfill share reduced from 54.7% to 7.3%. These signs of progress are believed to be driven by the ELD and the associated policies and waste management targets established at the national and local levels. An alternative scenario with food waste and textile separation at source and utilizing anaerobic digestion to treat separately collected organic waste is proposed at the end of this paper to fulfil the high targets set by local government and we further suggest that the recycling share may be improved by educating and supporting the public on waste separation at the sources.

To explore possible associations between maternal use of micronutrient supplements and the subsequent vitamin levels and symptoms in offspring with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a total of 416 children with ASD and 201 typically developing (TD) children were enrolled. The children born to mothers without folic acid (FA) and micronutrient supplementation during pregnancy had more severe social cognition impairments, social communication impairments, autism behaviour mannerisms, developmental delays in adaptive and gross motor behaviour and gastrointestinal problems than children born to mothers who used FA and micronutrient supplements (P＜0.05). Although available literature indicates a high risk of dementia in elderly patients with late-onset epilepsy (LOE), the findings are yet inconsistent and relevant risk factors are unclear, rendering rational clinical interpretation rather challenging. This article systematically evaluates the risk of dementia in elderly LOE patients. The potential risk factors were analyzed to provide a specific basis for clinical prediction of dementia. PubMed and web of science databases were searched for the published cohort studies of dementia in elderly LOE patients. The search results were subject to a meta-analysis with Stata16.0 statistical software. Seven articles were included for a comparison of dementia risk between epilepsy cases and controls, yielding a hazard ration (HR) of 2.1 (95 %CI：1.6～2.75，p = 0.00); dementia was more prevalent in female patients than in male counterparts, though without a statistical difference [1.2 % (95 %CI, 0.9 %-1.6 %) vs. 0.8 % (95 %CI, 0.5 %-1.1 %)]; compared with the non-LOE group, the LOE population reported a significantly higher incidence of diabetes mellitus [14.1 % (95 %CI, 12.8 %-15.4 %) vs. 10.9 % (95 %CI, 10.1 %-11 %), p 0.01]. The findings suggest that elderly patients with late-onset epilepsy run a higher risk of dementia than non-epileptic patients and diabetes mellitus may serve as a potential risk factor for dementia in this elderly populace.

Among the multiple kinds of neuronal cell death triggered by traumatic brain injury (TBI), ferroptosis, an iron-dependent lipid peroxidative regulatory cell death, has a critical role. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) is a nuclear transcription factor that regulates lipid metabolism and suppresses neuronal inflammation. However, the role of PPARγ in neuronal ferroptosis induced by TBI remains unclear. Here, we investigated the regulatory effect of PPARγ on neuronal ferroptosis in a weight-drop TBI model in vivo and an RAS-selective lethal 3 (RSL3)-activated ferroptotic neuronal model in vitro. PPARγ was mainly localized in the nucleus of neurons and was decreased in both the in vivo TBI model and the in vitro ferroptotic neuronal model. The addition of a specific agonist, pioglitazone, activated PPARγ, which protected neuronal function post-TBI in vivo and increased the viability of ferroptotic neurons in vitro. Further investigation suggested that PPARγ probably attenuates neuronal ferroptosis by downregulating cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) protein expression levels in vivo and in vitro. This study revealed the relationship among PPARγ, ferroptosis and TBI and identified a potential target for comprehensive TBI treatment.

In this study, we develop a new composite material of Fe-Cu/D407 composite via using nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) with copper deposited on chelating resin (D407) to remove nitrate from the water. The experimental results show that a remarkable nitrate removal and the selectivity of N2 are 99.9% and 89.7%, respectively, under the anaerobic conditions of Cu/Fe molar ratio of 1:2, pH = 3.0. Even without of inert gas and adjusting the initial pH of the solution, the removal rate of nitrate by Fe-Cu/D407 reached to 85% and the selectivity of nitrogen reached to 55%. Meanwhile, the Fe-Cu/D407 maintained preferable removal efficiency of nitrate (100% - 92%) over a wide pH range of 3–11. In addition, the removal rate of the drinking water, lake water and wastewater from the Fe-Cu/D407 is still very high and the reactivity of Fe-Cu/D407 was relatively unaffected by the presence of dissolved ions in the waters tested. Moreover, the synergetic effect of Fe, Cu and D407 in the composite Fe-Cu/D407 were well investigated for the first time according to the analyses of TPR, XPS and EIS. The catalytic mechanism and denitrification routes were also proposed.

In vertebrates, tumor necrosis factors (TNFs) are well-known cytokines involved in a diversity of physiological and pathological events. In the present work we identified a novel TNF-like gene (MnTNF) from Macrobrachium nipponense, which codes for a protein sharing detectable sequence identify (26-27%) to the mammalian TNFSF members, TWEAK and EDA. Tissue distribution analysis indicated that MnTNF was predominantly expressed in nervous tissue, and at relatively high level in haemocytes, gill, intestine and muscle, whereas was almost undetectable in hepatopancreas. In gill, MnTNF was significantly up-regulated at both mRNA as well protein levels upon Aeromonas veronii challenge. RNA interference (RNAi) mediated MnTNF silencing led to a significant overexpression of the antimicrobial peptide (AMP) gene crustin, but a non-significant overexpression of another AMP gene anti-lipopolysaccharide factor (ALF), and inhibited the activation of phenoloxidase (PO) significantly following bacterial challenge. Meanwhile, the expression of NF-κB-like factor gene relish was increased while that of dorsal and STAT was uninfluenced in MnTNF-depleted prawn. We suppose that MnTNF be involved in regulating the expression of AMP genes and the capacity of PO by coordinating with the Imd pathway.

Basidiomycete fungi are a rich source of bioactive diterpenoid secondary metabolites. However, compared with the large number of diterpene synthases (di-TPSs) identified in plants and ascomycete fungi, only three di-TPSs have been described from basidiomycete fungi. Large scale genome sequencing projects combined with the development of synthetic biology techniques now has enabled the rapidly discovery and characterization of di-TPSs from basidiomycete fungi. In this study, we discovered and functionally characterized four di-TPSs from 220 genome sequenced basidiomycete fungi by a combined strategy of genomic data mining, phylogenetic analysis and fast products characterization with synthetic biology techniques. Among them, SteTC1 of Stereum histurum was characterized as the first fungal cembrane diterpene synthase; PunTC of Punctularia strigosozonata and SerTC of Serpula lacrymans were characterized as ent-kauran-16α-ol synthase and DenTC3 of Dentipellis sp was characterized as a cyathane synthase. Our results provide opportunities for the discovery of new diterpenoids from basidiomycete fungi by genome mining.

Two new dinuclear lanthanide complexes, namely, [Ln2L(dbm)4]·2CH3OH (Ln = Gd (1) and Dy (2), H2L = N,N′-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,3-diamino-2-propanol, Hdbm = 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedione) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, single crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. The studies of single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrate that both 1 and 2 are isostructural with a [Ln2] core. Magnetic investigations reveal the presence of a weak antiferromagnetic interaction in 1 and 2, respectively, of which 1 displays magnetocaloric effect with a large magnetic entropy change (−ΔSm = 18.95(2) J kg−1 K−1 for ΔH = 7 T at 2 K), while 2 exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization with the anisotropy energy barrier ΔE/kB = 0.73(1) K.

The focus of this paper is on the measurement and prediction of unsaturated shear strength of residual soil as a function of matric suction by utilizing basic soil properties. A total of 19 unsaturated triaxial tests were performed on four groups of undisturbed residual soil specimens with different classifications and compositions. Six compacted specimens were tested and showed lower strength values than those of undisturbed specimens. The cohesion intercept due to matric suction was used to represent the strength contribution of the matric suction, thus accounting for the effect of confining pressure and effective cohesion. The feasibility of three existing models in predicting the apparent cohesion is investigated through comparing computed results to measured data from this paper and literature. A proposed regression equation, developed based on four data sets from the current research and six from the literature, shows an improved ability to predict measured apparent cohesion utilizing basic soil properties. The data set developed herein represent a significant addition to the literature on the unsaturated strength properties of natural residual soil, as sampled from the field.
