The poor operational stability of non-fullerene electron acceptor (NFA) organic solar cells (OSCs) currently limits their commercial application. While previous studies have primarily focused on the degradation of the NFA component, we also consider here the electron donor material. We examine the stability of three representative donor polymers, PM6, D18, and PTQ10, paired with the benchmark NFA, Y6. After light soaking PM6 and D18 in air, we find an enhanced conversion of singlet excitons into trapped interchain polaron pairs on sub-100 femtosecond timescales. This process outcompetes electron transfer to Y6, significantly reducing the charge generation yield. However, this pathway is absent in PTQ10. We identify twisting in the benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDT)-thiophene motif shared by PM6 and D18 as the cause. By contrast, PTQ10 does not contain this structural motif and has improved stability. Thus, we show that the donor polymer can be a weak link for OSC stability, which must be addressed collectively with the NFA.

Although it is well known dietary factors are closely correlated with bone health, the association between macronutrients intake distribution and bone mineral density (BMD) is still unclear. The aims of this study were to investigate how macronutrients distribution was correlated with BMD, and to evaluate how the substitution between macronutrients could be associated with BMD.We conducted a cross-sectional study based on data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Dietary recall method was used to assessed the intake of macronutrients. Macronutrient intake distribution including carbohydrate, protein and fat was calculated as percentages of energy intake from total energy. BMD was converted to T-score and low BMD was defined as T-score less than -1.0. The association between the percentages of energy intake from carbohydrate, protein and fat with T-score and risk of low BMD was evaluated using multivariate regression models. Isocaloric substitution analysis was conducted using the multivariate nutrient density method.Data form 4447 adults aged 20 years and older who underwent BMD examination were included in this study. Higher percentage of energy intake from carbohydrate was associated with lower T-score (-0.03 [95%CI, -0.05 to -0.01]; P = 0.001) and higher risk of low BMD (1.05 [95%CI, 1.02-1.08]; P = 0.003), while higher percentage of energy intake from protein was associated with higher T-score (0.05 [95%CI, 0.01-0.08]; P = 0.009) and lower odds of low BMD (0.92 [95%CI, 0.87-0.98]; P = 0.007). The percentage of energy intake from fat seemed to be positively correlated with T-score, but the correlation became insignificant after adjusting for metabolism related confounders. Isocaloric substitution analysis showed that only the substitution between carbohydrate and protein was significantly and independently associated with T-score (-0.05 [95%CI, -0.08 to -0.01]; P = 0.01) and the risk of low BMD (1.08 [95%CI, 1.02-1.15]; P = 0.008).Based on the results from this study, we hypothesized that a high-protein diet coupled with low carbohydrate intake would be beneficiary for prevention of bone loss in adults. However, randomized clinical trials or longitudinal studies are needed to further assessed our findings.

The purpose of this study was to prepare chitosan/zein (CS/Zein) edible films reinforced with Mosla chinensis essential oils (EOs) nanoemulsions (NEs) and nanoparticles (NPs) in order to compare their properties. NEs and NPs containing EOs could be used to fabricate films with functional properties, and the films were prepared using a casting method. The influence of EO concentration and mixing methods on the physical, mechanical, and functional properties of the films was investigated. The results indicated that the films formulated with EO NEs generated favorable fundamental and functional characteristics with excellent mechanical properties, moisture barrier capacity, and significant antioxidant and antibacterial activity. In addition, the use of NEs-based films improved the release of bioactive compounds, and the mechanism of EO release was found to follow a first order model. In summary, EO NEs were more effective in preserving the fundamental and functional properties of CS/Zein nanocomposite edible films than NP-based films. These differences may reflect different forms and methods of dispersing EOs in NEs and NPs. This study demonstrated that NEs reinforced films could be used to enhance the effectiveness of EOs in food products and develop new strategies for their delivery and application.

Pro-inflammatory cytokines play important roles in sepsis-induced cardiac injury. Among various cytokines, the function of Interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the regulation of cardiomyocyte injury remains to be elucidated. This study aimed to investigate whether IL-6 plays a key role in the sepsis-induced cardiomyocyte injury and the possible mechanism. Mice deficient for Il-6 exhibited impaired heart rhythm after LPS stimulation. Histological analysis revealed significantly increased oxidative stress after LPS stimulation in the heart with Il-6 knockout. On the contrary, IL-6 supplementation alleviated LPS-induced oxidative stress. Mechanically, IL-6 facilitates Nrf2 expression and its nucleus translocation, which subsequently promotes the expression of antioxidant genes and sustains redox homeostasis in cardiomyocytes, and Nrf2 deletion results in elevated oxidative stress during LPS stimulation and cannot be inverted by IL-6 supplement. Our study presents a new sight for the protective role of IL-6 during the pathological development of LPS-induced cardiac injury, which functions as an anti-oxidant molecule via activating Nrf2 signaling.

Black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs) has extensive application prospect in the fields of optoelectronics and biomedicine, due to its unique physicochemical properties. Therefore, a systematic toxic study is necessary to assess its environmental safety. Herein, BPNSs was prepared by liquid exfoliation procedure, the primary producer Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) was used as a test subject. After the exposure for 120 h at 15, 45 and 75 mg/L BPNSs, the cell viabilities were 45.05%, 18.86% and 4.60% for each treatment group, respectively. The extent of lipid peroxidation and peroxidative damage in C. vulgaris was confirmed by measuring reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities, followed by determination of malondialdehyde (MDA) content. Morphological analysis results (i.e., SEM and TEM) showed that BPNSs adhered to the cell surface and enter the cell to severely damage cell structure. Furthermore, BPNSs were shown to accelerate apoptosis in C. vulgaris by flow cytometry analysis. Finally, GC-MS was used to explore the metabolic regulatory mechanism of C. vulgaris in response to BPNSs stress. The results of this study can provide theoretical support for subsequent studies on the potential enrichment risk of BPNSs in the water environmental food chain.

Whether patients with borderline resectable and locally advanced pancreatic cancer (BR/LAPC) benefit from resection of the primary cancer is controversial. We developed a nomogram to screen who would benefit from surgery for the primary tumor.We identified patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and then divided them into surgical and non-surgical groups. A 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) was used to mitigate the bias. We hypothesized that patients who underwent surgery would benefit from surgery by having a longer median overall survival (OS) than patients who did not undergo surgery. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the variables affecting surgical outcomes, and a nomogram was created based on the multivariate logistic results. Finally, we verified the discrimination and calibration of the nomogram with receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve and calibration plots.A total of 518 pairs of surgical and non-surgical pancreatic cancer patients were matched after PSM. Survival curves showed longer OS in the surgical group than in the non-surgical group, median survival times were 14 months versus 8 months. In the surgical group, 340 (65.63%) patients have a longer survival time than 8 months (beneficial group). Multifactorial logit regression results showed that including age, tumor size, degree of differentiation, and chemotherapy were significant influences on the benefit of surgery for primary tumors and were used as predictors to construct a nomogram. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) reached 0.747 and 0.706 in the training and validation sets.We developed a practical predictive model to support clinical decision-making that can be used to help clinicians determine if there is a benefit to surgical resection of the primary tumor in patients with BR/LAPC.

Macrophages and osteoclasts are both derived from monocyte/macrophage lineage, which plays as the osteoclastic part of bone metabolism. Although they are regulated by bone implant surface nanoarchitecture and involved in osseointegration, the beneath mechanism has not been simultaneously analyzed in a given surface model and their communication with osteoblasts is also blurring. Here, the effect of implant surface topography on monocyte/macrophage lineage osteoclastogenesis and the subsequent effect on osteogenesis are systematically investigated. The nanoporous surface is fabricated on titanium implant by etching and anodizing to get the nanotubes structure. The early bone formation around implant is significantly accelerated by the nanoporous surface in vivo. Meanwhile, the macrophage recruitment and osteoclast formation are increased and decreased respectively. Mechanistically, the integrin mediated FAK phosphorylation and its downstream MAPK pathway (p-p38) are significantly downregulated by the nanoporous surface, which account for the inhibition of osteoclastogenesis. In addition, the nanoporous surface can alleviate the inhibition of osteoclasts on osteogenesis by changing the secretion of clastokines, and accelerate bone regeneration by macrophage cytokine profiles. In conclusion, these data indicate that physical topography of implant surface is a critical factor modulating monocyte/macrophage lineage commitment, which provides theoretical guidance and mechanism basis for promoting osseointegration by coupling the osteogenesis and osteoclastogenesis., Graphical abstract This paper investigates the modulation of osteogenesis by monocyte/macrophage lineage on titanium surface nanoarchitecture. Balancing charge generation and low energy loss (Eloss), especially in the wide spectral absorption region is critical to obtain high-performance organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Therefore, Y11-M and Y11-EB are designed and synthesized through modifying alkyl chains on different nitrogen aromatic rings of the reported non-fullerene acceptor Y11. Although all the molecules have almost similar low band-gap (around 1.30 eV), Y11-M and Y11-EB exhibit wider absorption in 410–870 nm region. Eventually, the conventional devices based on Y11-M and Y11-EB possess more efficient charge generation with low Eloss (around 0.44 eV). In addition, outstanding efficiencies of 16.64% and 17.15% with the fill factor of 76.15% and 74.73% are obtained in PM6:Y11-M and PM6:Y11-EB-based devices, both higher than Y11:PM6. The results highlight the importance of rational alkyl chains optimization, and a good structure-property relationship is established as well.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most frequently diagnosed neurodegenerative disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the link between microbiota composition in important mucosal interfaces (oral, nasal, and intestinal) and PD. Sequencing was undertaken of the V4-V5 region of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene of the microbiome from the oral cavity, nasal cavity, and gut of 91 PD patients and 91 healthy controls. Significant differences were found in microbiota composition in the oral cavity and gut, but not the nasal cavity, between PD patients and healthy controls after adjusting for age, gender, and body mass index (BMI). More genera in the oral cavity were significantly positively correlated with clinical characteristics, such as the HAMA and HAMD rating scales. The taxa c_Clostridia, o_Clostridiales, and f_Ruminococcaceae in the gut microbiota were associated with weight and MMSE score. Furthermore, as a result of dysbiosis, there was an enrichment of ion channel-, oxidative phosphorylation-, and carbohydrate metabolism-related pathways in the oral cavity and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis- and propanoate metabolism-related pathways in the intestine. Changes in these pathways can influence metabolism and inflammation, thereby contributing to PD pathogenesis. In addition, several subnetworks containing differentially abundant microbiota in the oral cavity and gut samples from PD patients may regulate microbial composition and function in PD. Overall, our results indicate that oral and gut dysbiosis may affect PD progression and provide a basis for understanding the pathogenesis of PD and identifying potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of this disease.
