Benzophenone-3 (BP-3) is one of the organic ultraviolet (UV) filters widely used in personal care products, resulting in its ubiquitous occurrence in aquatic systems. This study discovered the potential risks of benzophenone-3 and its metabolites (BP-1 and BP-8) in aquatic environments. This study investigated the toxicity of three single BPs and their mixtures' effects on the survival of Daphnia magna. All three BP types were found to have toxic effects on D. magna, with median effective concentration (EC50) values of 22.55 mg/L for BP-1, 1.89 mg/L for BP-3, and 2.36 mg/L for BP-8, after 48 hours of exposure. When the three BPs were binary and ternary mixtures, the EC50 values fell within 2.74-32.26 mg/L. Binary and tertiary mixtures of the three BPs indicated no strong synergistic or antagonistic effects. The mixture toxicity predictions using the classical mixture concept of concentration addition and measured toxicity data showed good predictability. The ecological risks of BPs were assessed using the maximum measured environmental concentrations of BPs collected from a river in Taiwan, divided by their respective predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) values derived from the assessment factor (AF) method. The result showed a low ecological risk for the sum of three BPs. However, BP-3 had the highest potential risk, while BP-1 was the lowest among the three BPs. Therefore, BP-3 should pay attention to long-term environmental monitoring and management. Due to the numerous industrial parks and high traffic density in Miaoli, Taiwan, large amounts of metals may be released into the atmosphere, accumulating in street dust. Therefore, this study aimed to collect street dust in Miaoli to quantify the metals and assess the accumulation degree, sources, and potential risks. The enrichment factor (EF), geological accumulation index (I geo ), ecological risk, and non-carcinogenic and lifetime carcinogenic risk were estimated to assess the accumulation degree and the potential environmental and health risks. Pearson correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and positive matrix factor model were used to clarify the relationship between levels of metals and identify possible sources. The levels of metals in street dust in order were Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > Sr > Co > Sb. According to I geo , the level of Ni indicated moderately polluted. The levels of Zn, Cu, and Pb showed moderate to strong pollution, strong pollution, and very strong pollution, respectively. Results of average ecological risk analysis pointed out that Pb and Cu represent a very high risk, while other metals posed low-to moderate-level ecological risks. Excluding the Steel Enterprise area, based on the EF value and source identification, it might be concluded that Co, Sr, Fe, Mn, and Sb were mainly from natural sources, while Cu, Pb, and Zn come from anthropogenic pollution sources. Based on the results of the risk assessments, most metals pose no serious adverse health risk to humans. But, in comparison to Miaoli townships, the health risks of residents living in the Steel Enterprise area were higher. Phthalate esters (PAEs) have known widely being used in plastic products leading to being ubiquitous in the environment by easy to release from those products. This study aims to understand the impact of heavy rainfall on the concentration of PAEs in surface sediments of the Salt River in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and its potential ecological risks on aquatic organisms. The potential ecological risk assessment of sediment PAEs is based on the total risk quotient (TRQ) method. The total concentration of 10 PAEs (∑PAE10) in sediments of the Salt River is 333-13,615 ng/g dw, with an average of 4212 ± 3753 ng/g dw. Before the rainy season, the ∑PAE10 concentration in sediments at the outlets of domestic sewage in upstream was 9768-13,615 ng/g dw, which were relatively higher than other sites (542-3721 ng/g dw). During the rainy season, the ∑PAE10 concentration was 2820-12,041 ng/g dw, which was 1-11 times higher than that determined before the rainy season. After the rainy season, the ∑PAE10 concentration recorded was 530-6652 ng/g dw, which is 1-11 times lower than the value obtained during the rainy season. PAEs in sediments of the Salt River may have low to moderate potential risks to algae, crustaceans, and fish. Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP) are the main PAE that poses a potential risk to algae and crustaceans, and to fish respectively, whose values of risk quotient accounts for 40-69% of the TRQ value. The distribution of TRQ values for these aquatic organisms show a decreasing trend of PAEs level with respect to the rainy season: during the rainy season > after the rainy season > before the rainy season. Contamination by microplastics (MPs) and the associated organic pollutants has caused potential threats to the ecological environment of global waters. In this study, MPs were sampled by trawling from the surface waters of the estuary, fishing port entrance and harbor entrance areas connected to the southwestern coast of Taiwan. Moreover, the abundance, morphological characteristics, composition, and associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of MPs were analyzed. The abundance of MPs was 0.36 ± 0.21 items/m 3 , which was 6.4 ± 10.7% of the abundance of zooplanktons. The average abundance of MPs was the highest in the estuary area, indicating that river transport was the primary way for MPs to enter the ocean. The most dominant MPs were small (0.33-2 mm; 78.8 ± 8.1%), colored (60.0 ± 12.8%), fragments (66.1 ± 10.6%), comprising PE (52.6 ± 7.6%), and PP (38.7 ± 9.4%). The decomposition of various plastic products and disposable plastic packaging may be the most significant source. The total concentration of PAHs in MPs ranged from 104 to 3595 ng/g dw, with an average of 818 ± 874 ng/g dw. The diagnostic ratios and the results of principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple linear regression of the absolute principal component scores (MLR-APCS) indicated that the PAHs were mainly contributed from sources related to petrogenic (71.4%) and vehicles (28.6%). Shellfishes can easily accumulate metals via water and sediment and which may pose a human health risk by consumption. This study assessed the distribution of metals, including Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn, and Hg, in soft tissues of hard clam (Meretrix lusoria), surrounding water body, and sediment in the southwest coast of Taiwan. Hard clams contained the relatively higher concentration of the essential element, such as Zn, Cu, and Ni, and the metal concentration from high to low was Zn > Cu > Ni > Cd > Cr > Pb > Hg. However, the metal concentrations found in hard clam all were lower than the Sanitation Standard for Aquatic Animal of Taiwan. Results of bioaccumulation factors indicated that hard clam shows the ability of metal accumulation from water was higher than that from sediment. Moreover, the metal concentrations in hard clam were negatively correlated with body size except for Hg, which could be presented by the significant power function. Generally, hard clams from the aquaculture pond located on the southwest coast of Taiwan would not be harmful to adult consumers, except for people that consume shellfish more than 100 g. Besides strengthening the management of seafood safety and aquaculture, adjusting the eating and purchasing habits of the consumer could be a practical and feasible way for decreasing health risks. Kaohsiung Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site (KODMDS) that located in the southwest offshore of Taiwan, has been annually disposed about 500,000 ton dredged sediments of Kaohsiung Harbor from 2003 to 2012. Five sediment cores collected from KODMDS and three from nearby reference sites were analyzed to evaluate their sedimentation rates, vertical profiles of heavy metal, and heavy metal pollution indices to assess the impact of dumping harbor dredged sediments into the ocean on the sediment quality in KODMDS. The sedimentation rate of 0.24 cm/y was estimated by the 210 Pb method, which means that the effected depth of the top layer of a core of D1 was affected in the period of dumping dredging sediments. The vertical distribution of heavy metals in the sediment cores from KODMDS showed the concentrations of most heavy metals were slightly elevated in the top layers of the sediment cores, which may be affected by the dumping of harbor dredged sediments. According to the analyzed results of the heavy metal pollution indices, the level of heavy metal pollution, the potential eco-toxicity and the potential ecological risk of the sediments in KODMDS exhibited only a slight increase, which indicated that the increase in concentration of heavy metals may potentially pose the insignificant impact on benthos inhabiting the disposal site., (Copyright © 2017. Six sediment cores collected at the Kaohsiung Harbor of Taiwan were analyzed to evaluate their vertical profiles, enrichments, accumulations, and source apportionments of heavy metals. This was performed to investigate any potential ecological risks posed by heavy metals. Results indicated that the mean heavy metal content (mg kg -1 ) in the six sediment cores was as follows: Hg (0.4-6.4), Cd (<0.05-2.4), Cr (18-820), Cu (16-760), Pb (31-140), and Zn (76-1900). The patterns of heavy metal content in the sediment cores differed substantially among the four river mouths. However, the vertical profiles of metals were relatively stable, indicating that wastewater has the constant characteristics and has been discharged into the rivers for a long period of time. Results of pollution assessment of enrichment factor, geo-accumulation index, and pollution load index revealed that river mouths experience severe enrichment, strong accumulation, and high contamination from the primary heavy metals. It was not consistent in the assessment results of mean effect range median quotient, potential ecological risk index, and total toxic unit method. Potential ecological risks caused by Hg in the sediments at Canon River and Love River mouths on aquatic organisms were extremely high. The estimates derived from the receptor modeling of multiple linear regression of the absolute principal component scores indicated that the contributions of the composite heavy metals derived from the Canon River and the Love River on the potential toxicity and risks to the water environment of Kaohsiung Harbor were highest, followed by those derived from Salt River and Jen-Gen River., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. The purpose of this paper was to examine trade-offs between elimination and detoxification in rainbow trout and three common bivalve molluscs (clam, oyster, and scallop) exposed to cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) based on recent reported experimental data. We incorporated metal influx threshold with subcellular partitioning to estimate rate constants of detoxification (k(d)) and elimination (k₂). We found that the relationships between k₂ and k(d) were negative for rainbow trout and positive for bivalve molluscs. However, the relationships between k(d) and % metal in metabolically detoxified pool were found positive for rainbow trout and negative for bivalve molluscs. Our results also indicated that rainbow trout had higher accumulation (~60-90%) in metabolically active pool when exposed to essential metals of Cu and Zn and had only 10-50% accumulation in response to non-essential metal of Cd. Based on a cluster analysis, this study indicated that similarity of physiological regulations among study species was found between Cd and Zn. Our study suggested that detoxification can be predicted by an elimination-detoxification scheme with the known elimination rate constant. We concluded that quantification of trade-offs between subcellular partitioning and detoxification provides valuable insights into the ecotoxicology of aquatic organisms and enhances our understanding of the subcellular biology of trace metals., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The purpose of this study is to conduct a long-term site-specific risk assessment for zinc (Zn) susceptibility of bivalves, green mussel Perna viridis and hard clam Ruditapes philippinarum, based on published experimental data by linking the biologically-based damage assessment model with the subcellular partitioning concept. A comprehensive risk modeling framework was developed to predict susceptibility probability of two bivalve species exposed to waterborne Zn. The results indicated that P. viridis accumulates more Zn toxicity, whereas both toxic potency and the recovery rate of Zn are higher for R. philippinarum. We found that negative linear correlations exist in elimination-recovery and elimination-detoxification relationships, whereas a positive linear correlation was observed in recovery-detoxification relationships for bivalves exposed to waterborne Zn. Simulation results showed that the spatial differences of susceptibility primarily resulted from the variation of waterborne Zn concentration under field conditions. We found that R. philippinarum is more susceptible of Zn than P. viridis under the same exposure condition. Results also suggested that Zn posed no significant susceptibility risk to two bivalve species in Taiwan.
