Cancer has keeping the main threat to the health of human being. Its overall survival rate has shown rare substantial progress in spite of the improving diagnostic and treatment techniques for cancer in recent years. Indeed, such classic strategies for malignant tumor as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy have been developed and bring more hope to the patients, but still been accompanied by certain limitations, which include the challenge of managing large wound sizes, systemic toxic side effects, and harmful to the healthy tissues caused by imprecise alignment with tumors in radiotherapy. Furthermore, immunotherapy exhibits a limited therapeutic effect in advanced tumors which is reported only up to 25%–30%. The combination of nanomaterials and cancer treatment offers new hope for cancer patients, demonstrating strong potential in the field of medical research. Among the extensively utilized nanomaterials, calcium carbonate nanomaterials (CCNM) exhibit a broad spectrum of biomedical applications due to their abundant availability, cost-effectiveness, and exceptional safety profile. CCNM have the potential to elevate intracellular Ca2+ levels in tumor cells, trigger the mitochondrial damage and ultimately lead to tumor cell death. Moreover, compared with other types of nanomaterials, CCNM exhibit remarkable advantages as delivery systems owing to their high loading capacity, biocompatibility and biodegradability. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of CCNM synthesis, focusing on summarizing its diverse roles in cancer treatment and the benefits and challenges associated with CCNM in cancer therapy. Hoping to present the significance of CCNM as for the clinical application, and summarize information for the design of CCNM and other types of nanomaterials in the future.

BackgroundReparation of C5 by proximal selective ipsilateral C7 transfer has been reported for the treatment of neurogenic shoulder abduction limitation as an alternative to the reparation of the suprascapular nerve (SSN) and the axillary nerve (AXN) by distal nerve transfers. However, there is a lack of evidence to support either strategy leading to better outcomes based on long-term follow-up.ObjectiveThe purpose of the study was to investigate the safety and long-term outcomes of the posterior division of ipsilateral C7 (PDIC7) transfer to C5 in treating neurogenic shoulder abduction limitation.MethodsA total of 27 cases with limited shoulder abduction caused by C5 injury (24 cases of trauma, 2 cases of neuritis, and 1 case of iatrogenic injury) underwent PDIC7 transfer to the C5 root. A total of 12 cases (11 cases of trauma and 1 case of neuritis) of C5 injury underwent spinal accessory nerve (SAN) transfer to SSN plus the triceps muscular branch of the radial nerve (TMBRN) transfer to AXN. The patients were followed up for at least 12 months for muscle strength and shoulder abduction range of motion (ROM).ResultsIn cases that underwent PDIC7 transfer, the average shoulder abduction was 105.9° at the 12-month follow-up. In total, 26 of 27 patients recovered at least M3 (13 reached M4) (Medical Research Council Grading) of the deltoid. In cases that underwent SAN transfer to SSN plus TMBRN to AXN, the average shoulder abduction was 84.6° at the 12-month follow-up. In total, 11 of 12 patients recovered at least M3 (4 reached M4) of the deltoid.ConclusionPosterior division of ipsilateral C7 transfer is a one-stage, safe, and effective surgical procedure for patients with neurogenic shoulder abduction limitation.

To explore a scientific and reasonable cooking method for Clitocybe squamulosa, four cooking methods (boiling, steaming, microwaving, and frying) were applied to C. squamulosa, and the effects of different cooking methods on volatile flavor compounds, nutritional constituents, and antioxidant activities in C. squamulosa were systematically investigated. The results showed that 54, 53, 61, 63, and 49 volatile flavor compounds were detected in raw, boiled, steamed, microwaved, and fried samples, respectively. Large differences in volatile flavor compounds between the four cooking and raw samples were determined by using relative odor activity values (ROAV) and principal component analysis (PCA). In addition, steaming and microwaving could protect the nutrients of C. squamulosa, reduce losses during the cooking process and improve the color of cooked products compared to boiling and frying cooking methods. Meanwhile, cooking treatment exerted different effects on the antioxidant activity of C. squamulosa, and the antioxidant activity of C. squamulosa was the highest after microwave cooking treatment. This research can provide a theoretical basis for the cooking, processing and utilization of C. squamulosa and other wild edible fungi.

Simplicillium species are widely distributed and commonly found on various substrates. A minority of species are associated with arthropods. A spider-associated species Simplicillium araneae, and three insect-associated species, Simplicillium coleopterorum, Simplicillium guizhouense, and Simplicillium larvatum, are proposed as novel species based on a multi-locus phylogenetic analysis and morphological characteristics. These Simplicillium species completely fit the nutritional model of Hypocreales fungi and could be used as a model to study their evolutionary relationship. A phylogenetic network analysis based on ITS sequences suggests that a host jump was common among Simplicillium species, and S. araneae may have originally come from an insect host and then jumped to a spider host. However, the evolutionary relationship of S. coleopterorum, S. guizhouense, and S. larvatum was not clear in the phylogenetic network and more sequencing information should be added to the network. In addition, strain CBS 101267 was identified as Simplicillium subtropicum.

Objective: To analyze factors influencing the vancomycin trough concentration in burn patients to provide a basis for the more rational use of vancomycin in these patients. Materials and methods: We collected the clinical data of adult burn patients treated with vancomycin in a Chinese hospital. Vancomycin was administered at a dosing regimen of 1.0 g q12 h. Patients were divided into a therapeutic group with vancomycin trough concentration in the target therapeutic range (10–20 μg/mL) and a subtherapeutic group with vancomycin trough concentration in the subtherapeutic range (<10 μg/mL). Results: The therapeutic group included 14 patients (17.5%), with an average trough concentration of 14.36 ± 2.82 μg/mL; the subtherapeutic group included 66 patients (82.5%), with an average trough concentration of 5.18 ± 2.77 μg/mL. The serum creatinine level was significantly higher in the therapeutic group (84.93 ± 47.26 μmol/L) than that in the subtherapeutic group (62.44 ± 14.49 μmol/L) (p < 0.01). Serum albumin levels were significantly lower in the therapeutic group (30.50 ± 2.28 g/L) than those in the subtherapeutic group (34.00 ± 6.22 g/L) (p < 0.05). Using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, for serum albumin, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) (95% confidence interval [CI]) was 0.67 (0.553, 0.788); the optimal cut-off point was 34.50 g/L (p = 0.046), the sensitivity was 0.379, and the specificity was 1.0. For creatinine clearance, the AUC (95% CI) was 0.72 (0.537, 0.902); the optimal cut-off point was 76.64 mL/min (p = 0.01), the sensitivity was 0.985, and the specificity was 0.5. The linear stepwise regression equation was as follows: trough concentration = 0.14 × age + 0.071 × serum creatinine −4.196. Conclusion: In this study, a high proportion of burn patients had a vancomycin trough concentration below the standard range. Serum creatinine clearance and albumin levels are important indicators for predicting whether the vancomycin trough concentration is within the standard range. Using a linear stepwise regression equation, the vancomycin trough concentration can be estimated using the patient's age and serum creatinine level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to improve the city network mining method, the inter-cities’ connection strength, structure and density, and distribution patterns of city network in the Yangtze River Economic Belt of China have been empirically analyzed through the combined application of SNA method, “Dual-direction time distance” modified gravity model and ArcGIS geographic visualization method. The results show that the modified gravity model can better reveal the interaction differences between cities and reflect the current and potential economic, population and resource relations among cities. The city network density of this area has positively close relationship with the regional economic development level. The average value of degree centrality in the basin is high, but the difference between cities is obvious. The “agglomeration effect” of the central cities is significant, and the urban connections have an obvious cluster structure, showing an “M” shaped spatial distribution along the Yangtze River; The inner interaction strength of city network subgroups is high, but the connection between subgroups is low. The law of “downstream > midstream > upstream” also appears on the closeness centrality and betweenness centrality. In the future, it is essential to improve the integration and multi-level connections of urban agglomeration in the river basin and form a development pattern of “downstream driving - midstream transition - upstream connection”; strengthen the functions and connections of central and subcentral cities.

Salvia miltiorrhiza is an important medicinal plant that experiences significant growth and biomass losses when cultivated on cadmium (Cd) contaminated soils. High Cd accumulation in plant tissues also increases the risk of metal entry into the food chain. In this study, we proposed that Cd accumulation in S. miltiorrhiza can be restricted through plant growth regulators and nutrient management. Therefore, S. miltiorrhiza seedlings were transplanted into mixed nutrient soil for two weeks, then treated with 30 mg kg-1 CdCl2, 200 mg kg-1 Na2SiO3·9H2O, and 100 mg kg-1 MnSO4, and simultaneously sprayed with 10 mg L-1 ALA on the leaves one week later. This study showed that elevated Cd accumulation significantly reduced plant growth and biomass. This growth inhibition damaged photosynthetic machinery and impaired carbon assimilation. In contrast, 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) significantly promoted the biomass of S. miltiorrhiza, and the dry weight of plants treated with ALA combined with manganese (Mn)/silicon (Si) increased by 42% and 55% as compared with Cd+Mn and Cd+Si treatments. Exogenously applied ALA and Si/Mn significantly activated antioxidant enzymes and promoted the growth recovery of S. miltiorrhiza. Further, exogenous ALA also reduced the Cd concentration in S. miltiorrhiza, especially when combined with Si. Compared with the Cd+Si treatment, the Cd+Si+ALA treatment reduced the Cd concentration in roots and leaves by 59% and 60%, respectively. Gene expression analysis suggested that ALA and Si significantly up-regulated genes associated with Cd transport. Other genes related to heavy metal tolerance mechanisms are also regulated to cope with heavy metal stress. These results indicated that the combined action of ALA and Si/Mn could reduce Cd-toxicity by increasing chlorophyll content and changing oxidative stress and can also affect Cd accumulation by regulating gene expression.

Gene therapy is one of the target therapies with promising clinical use for gastric cancer (GC). However, the delivery of the CRISPR/Cas9/sgRNA (RNP) gene editing tool severely limits the practical therapeutic effect of GC. Therefore, it is a great challenge to develop an RNP delivery system that is simple to prepare and can rapidly encapsulate RNP while achieving high delivery and gene editing efficiency. We developed, for the first time, the CRISPR/Cas9@PDA nano-delivery system that can achieve high-efficiency delivery (95%) of CRISPR/Cas9-3NLS/sgHMGA2 and high-efficient HMGA2 gene editing (82%) of GC cells. In particular, the experiment’s weak alkaline environment can not only protect the activity of CRISPR/Cas9-3NLS/sgHMGA2 but also trigger the self-polymerization of polydopamine (PDA). Meanwhile, the presence of KE in the CRISPR/Cas9 amino acid sequence can achieve the directional growth of PDA, thus forming a core–shell structure that protects CRISPR/Cas9-3NLS/sgHMGA2. This efficient CRISPR/Cas9-3NLS/sgHMGA2 delivery and HMGA2 gene editing ability has also been verified in mice, which can significantly inhibit tumor growth in mice. The success of building the delivery system and its ideal treating effect give hope to the efficacious treatment for the GC patients with HMGA2 high expression.

As an important ecological environmental factor, the lake water surface temperature (LSWT) has an important impact on the ecological diversity of lakes and watersheds. With the acceleration of urbanization in China, the impact of urban expansion on LSWT can not be ignored. In this study, we introduced the spatial influence(G) equation, selected MOD11A2, impervious surface (IS), digital elevation model (DEM) and Landsat series remote sensing images as data sources, and took six lakes with rapid urban expansion in China as the empirical research object to explore the variation characteristics of urban expansion and LSWT in six lake watersheds and the spatial influence of urban expansion on LSWT. Finally, the following conclusions can be drawn: The results show that 1) The IS in the six watersheds all experienced significant expansion, with an increase of 1.80–3.91 times. 2) From the annual average LSWT from 2001 to 2018, only Poyang Lake’s LSWT-night shows a cooling trend, while other lakes, whether LSWT-day or LSWT-night, show a warming trend. 3) G is used to comprehensively consider the area change of IS in the watershed, the influence of distance and the change of lake area, which can quantify the impact of IS on LSWT, so as to further explain and describe the spatial influence process and characteristics of IS expansion on LSWT.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory colorectal disease characterized by excessive mucosal immune response activation and dysfunction of autophagy in intestinal epithelial cells. Traditional herbal preparations, including the Huangkui lianchang decoction (HLD), are effective in UC clinical treatment in East Asia, but the underlying mechanism is unclear. This study evaluated the therapeutic effects and associated molecular mechanisms of HLD in UC in vivo and in vitro. A C57BL/6 UC mouse model was established using 2.5% dextran sulfate sodium. The effects of HLD on the colonic structure and inflammation in mice were evaluated using mesalazine as the control. The anti-inflammatory effects of HLD were assessed using disease activity index (DAI) scores, histological scores, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and western blotting. HLD displayed a protective effect in UC mice by reducing the DAI and colonic histological scores, as well as levels of inflammatory cytokines and NF-κB p65 in colonic tissues. NCM460 lipopolysaccharide-induced cells were administered drug serum-containing HLD (HLD-DS) to evaluate the protective effect against UC and the effect on autophagy. HLD-DS exhibited anti-inflammatory effects in NCM460 cells by reducing the levels of inflammatory cytokines and increasing interleukin 10 levels. HLD-DS reduced p-NF-κB p65, LC3II/I, and Beclin 1 expression, which suggested that HLD alleviated colitis by inhibiting the NF-κB pathway and autophagy. However, there was no crosstalk between the NF-κB pathway and autophagy. These findings confirmed that HLD was an effective herbal preparation for the treatment of UC.

BackgroundIntermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) is an optimized rTMS modality that could modulate the excitability of neural structures. Several studies have been conducted to investigate the efficacy of iTBS in improving the motor function of stroke patients. However, the specific role of iTBS in motor function recovery after stroke is unclear. Hence, in our study, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the efficacy of iTBS for the motor function improvement of stroke patients.MethodsMEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched until May 2022 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs).ResultsThirteen RCTs with 334 patients were finally included in our study. The primary endpoints were the Fugl-Meyer assessment scale (FMA) and Motor Assessment Scale (MAS) change from baseline. We found that iTBS led to a significant reduction in FMA score (P = 0.002) but not in MAS score (P = 0.24) compared with the sham group. Moreover, standard 600-pulse stimulation showed a better effect on motor function improvement than the sham group (P = 0.004), however, 1200-pulse iTBS showed no effect on motor function improvement after stroke (P = 0.23). The effect of iTBS for improving motor function only exists in chronic stroke patients (P = 0.02) but not in subacute patients (P = 0.27).ConclusionThis study supports that iTBS has good efficacy for improving motor function in stroke patients. Therefore, standard 600-pulse stimulation iTBS therapy is proper management and treatment for chronic stroke.

Green finance is an emerging topic which is broadly discussed in context of adapting and mitigating environmental deterioration due to climate change. As an effective incentive mechanism, it provides strong support for carbon emission reduction. However, a limited review articles investigate the specific combination of green finance and carbon emission reduction. Here, we apply a bibliometric analysis to review research on green finance and carbon emission reduction based on the literature from 2010 to 2021 in the Web of Science core database. The results indicate that countries with the most publications were those with high economic development, salient environmental problems, and a strong demand for ecological protection. Top publishing journals include Climate Policy, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Energy Policy. The author collaboration is fragmented, mostly less than three researchers. Based on analyses of keyword frequency and centrality, deforestation, carbon markets, and financial development were the most significant research topics. The research hotspots included clean development mechanism, adaptation, carbon market, and sequestration. Finally, the DPSIR framework is applied to explore driving forces, state, pressure, impact and response of current research. We hope our work provides a systematic review of green finance for carbon emission reduction to boost the research in this field.

Medicinal plants are inhabited by diverse microbes in every compartment, and which play an essential role in host growth and development, nutrient absorption, synthesis of secondary metabolites, and resistance to biological and abiotic stress. However, the ecological processes that manage microbiota assembly and the phenotypic and metabolic characteristics of the core microbiota of Eucommia ulmoides remain poorly explored. Here, we systematically evaluated the effects of genotypes, compartment niches, and environmental conditions (climate, soil nutrition, and secondary metabolites) on the assembly of rhizosphere soil and bark associated bacterial communities. In addition, phenotypic and metabolic characteristics of E. ulmoides core microbiota, and their relationship with dominant taxa, rare taxa, and pharmacologically active compounds were deciphered. Results suggested that microbiota assembly along the two compartments were predominantly shaped by the environment (especially pH, relative humidity, and geniposide acid) and not by host genotype or compartment niche. There were 690 shared genera in the rhizosphere soil and bark, and the bark microbiota was mainly derived from rhizosphere soil. Core microbiota of E. ulmoides was a highly interactive “hub” microbes connecting dominant and rare taxa, and its phenotypic characteristics had a selective effect on compartment niches. Metabolic functions of the core microbiota included ammonia oxidation, nitrogen fixation, and polyhydroxybutyrate storage, which are closely related to plant growth or metabolism. Moreover, some core taxa were also significantly correlated with three active compounds. These findings provide an important scientific basis for sustainable agricultural management based on the precise regulation of the rhizosphere soil and bark microbiota of E. ulmoides.

Insects have a long history of being used in medicine, with clear primary and secondary functions and less side effects, and the study and exploitation of medicinal insects have received increasing attention. Insects gut microbiota and their metabolites play an important role in protecting the hosts from other potentially harmful microbes, providing nutrients, promoting digestion and degradation, and regulating growth and metabolism of the hosts. However, there are still few studies linking the medicinal values of insects with their gut microbes. In this study, we focused on the specific gut microbiota common to medicinal insects, hoping to trace the potential connection between medicinal values and gut microbes of medicinal insects. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing data, we compared the gut microbiota of medicinal insects [Periplaneta americana, Protaetia (Liocola) brevitarsis (Lewis) and Musca domestica], in their medicinal stages, and non-medicinal insects (Hermetia illucens L., Tenebrio molitor, and Drosophila melanogaster), and found that the intestinal microbial richness of medicinal insects was higher, and there were significant differences in the microbial community structure between the two groups. We established a model using a random-forest method to preliminarily screen out several types of gut microbiota common to medicinal insects that may play medicinal values: Parabacteroides goldsteinii, Lactobacillus dextrinicus, Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis (B. infantis), and Vagococcus carniphilus. In particular, P. goldsteinii and B. infantis were most probably involved in the anti-inflammatory effects of medicinal insects. Our results revealed an association between medicinal insects and their gut microbes, providing new development directions and possibly potential tools for utilizing microbes to enhance the medicinal efficacy of medicinal insects.

Background & aims: HBV infection initiates autoimmune responses, leading to autoantibody generation. This research explores the role of autoantibodies in HBV-related Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure (ACLF), offering novel perspectives for clinical management. Method: We applied immunoprecipitation and iTRAQ techniques to screen for autoantibodies in serum from HBV-related cirrhosis patients and conducted detection with conformation-stabilizing ELISA in a cohort of 238 HBV-infected individuals and 49 health controls. Our results were validated in a retrospective cohort comprising 106 ACLF patients and further assessed through immunohistochemical analysis in liver tissues from an additional 10 ACLF cases. Results: Utilizing iTRAQ, we identified Argonaute1-3 autoantibodies (AGO-Abs) in this research. AGO2-Abs notably increased in cirrhosis, decompensation, and further in ACLF, unlike AGO1-Abs and AGO3-Abs. This reflects disease severity correlation. Logistic regression and COX models confirmed AGO2-Abs as independent prognostic indicators for decompensated liver cirrhosis (DLC) and ACLF. In the ROC analysis, AGO2-Abs showed significant diagnostic value for predicting 28- and 90-day mortality (AUROC = 0.853 and 0.854, respectively). Furthermore, combining AGO2-Abs with the Child-Pugh, MELD, and AARC scores significantly improved their predictive accuracy (P < 0.05). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed poorer survival for AGO2-Abs levels above 99.14mg/ml. These findings were supported by a retrospective validation cohort. Additionally, immunohistochemistry revealed band-like AGO2 expression in periportal liver areas, with AGO2-Abs levels correlating with total bilirubin, indicating a potential role in exacerbating liver damage through periportal functions. Introduction: Neuroinflammation serves as a critical local defense mechanism against secondary brain injury following intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and astrocytes play a prominent role in this process. In this study, we investigated astrocytic changes during the inflammatory state after ICH to identify new targets for improving the inflammatory response. Methods: We stimulated mouse astrocytes with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in vitro and analyzed their transcriptomes via ribonucleic acid sequencing. We created an ICH model in living organisms by injecting autologous blood. Results: RNA sequencing revealed that 2,717 genes were differentially expressed in the LPS group compared to those in the saline group, with notable enrichment of the autophagic pathway. By intersecting the 2,717 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with autophagy-related genes, we identified 36 autophagyrelated DEGs and seven hub genes. Previous studies and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction results confirmed the increased expression of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase catalytic subunit type 3 (Pik3c3), AKT serine/threonine kinase 1 (Akt1), and unc-51 like autophagy activating kinase 2 (Ulk2) in astrocytes after ICH. Transcription factors and target miRNAs were identified for the final three DEGs, and 3-methyladenine and leupeptin were identified as potential therapeutic agents for ICH. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that astrocyte autophagy plays a critical role in ICH complexity, and that Pik3c3, Akt1, and Ulk2 may be potential therapeutic targets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Purpose: Data on the relationship among neutrophil count, intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS), and functional outcomes after endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for ischemic stroke patients remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the association between neutrophil count and prognosis of EVT patients and to determine whether the association was mediated by ICAS.Methods: We retrospectively analyzed consecutive patients who underwent EVT at two comprehensive stroke centers between June 2016 and December 2019. A remaining stenosis >70%, or a lesser degree of stenosis with a tendency toward re-occlusion or flow impairment during the procedure, was classified as ICAS. A poor outcome was defined as a 90-day modified Rankin Scale score of 3–6.Results: Of the 221 patients (mean age, 65.9 years; males, 61.1%) included in this study, 81 (36.3%) had ICAS, and 120 (54.3%) experienced a poor outcome at 90 days, respectively. In the multivariate adjustment for potential confounders, neutrophil count (odds ratio [OR], 1.19; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04–1.36; P = 0.012) and presence of ICAS (OR, 2.65; 95CI%, 1.28–5.45; P = 0.008) were risk factors of poor outcomes. Furthermore, mediation analysis indicated that total ICAS mediated the association between increased neutrophil count and worse functional outcome after EVT (the regression coefficient was changed by 11.7% for poor outcome, and 17.1% for modified Rankin Scale score, respectively).Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that a higher neutrophil count might increase the risk of a poor outcome among ischemic stroke patients who underwent EVT, which was partially mediated by ICAS.

The family Thelebolaceae belongs to the order Thelebolales, class Leotiomycetes, and contains 22 genera. In this study, we introduce a new genus Solomyces gen. nov. in the family Thelebolaceae, which is supported by morphological observation and multilocus-based [internal transcribed spacers (ITS) + LSU and ITS + LSU+ MCM7+ EF1A+ RPB2] phylogenetic analysis. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic inference analyses indicated that Solomyces is a distinct genus within this family. The new genus is compared against related Thelebolaceae genera, and its description and illustration are provided. This genus comprises one new species and one unnamed species (including two strains). We also report the addition of four new species – Pseudogymnoascus shaanxiensis, Pseudogymnoascus guizhouensis, Pseudogymnoascus sinensis, and Geomyces obovatus – in the family Thelebolaceae and present their morphological and phylogenetic characterizations.

Endophytes have the potential to enhance the ability of plants to resist salt stress, improving crop development and yield. Therefore, in this study, we isolated an endophyte that produced large amounts of exopolysaccharides (EPSs) from the roots of sea rice and examined its effects on the physiological responses of rice (Oryza sativa L. ssp. japonica “Nipponbare”) seedlings to salt stress using hydroponic experiments. The endophyte was named Pantoea alhagi NX-11 based on its morphological characteristics and 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequence alignment. Rice seedlings that had been inoculated with P. alhagi NX-11 exhibited a 30.3% increase in fresh weight, a 28.6% increase in root length, a 51.6% increase in shoot length, and a 26.3% increase in chlorophyll content compared with control seedlings under normal conditions. In addition, inoculated rice seedlings had a 37.5% lower malondialdehyde content, a 133% higher K+/Na+ ratio, and a 52.8% higher proline content after 7 days under salt stress, as well as up-regulated expression of proline synthase, down-regulated expression of proline dehydrogenase, and enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities. Interestingly, rice seedlings that were inoculated with an EPS-deficient strain named NX-11eps– that was obtained by atmospheric and room temperature plasma (ARTP) mutagenesis were damaged by salt stress and had similar physiological and biochemical indicators to the control group. Therefore, we speculate that the ability of P. alhagi NX-11 to enhance the salt tolerance of rice seedlings is related to the EPSs it produces.

Introduction: Aneurysms on the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) may not be the major part of intracranial aneurysm. Especially, an aneurysm located on the bilateral posterior inferior cerebellar anastomotic artery has abnormal anatomical characteristics in the vessel wall and then causes stroke including subarachnoid hemorrhage. This case report explores the direct resection of a ruptured aneurysm associated with the bilateral anomalous anastomotic artery of PICA. Methods: The case report discusses a 53-year-old woman who suffered from sudden severe headache and vomiting for more than 3  h admitted to our hospital. Emergency computed tomography (CT) revealed subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in the third and fourth ventricles. Preoperative 3 Dimensions-digital subtraction angiography (3-D DSA) indicated a ruptured aneurysm located on the bilateral posterior inferior cerebellar anastomotic artery. Postoperative pathological findings indicated the characteristics of parent artery PICA and control aneurysm. The authors performed an overview of PICA aneurysms with anomalous variation in the Pubmed, Web of Science, and Medline databases. The search was until 1 August 2023. Related terms “posterior inferior cerebellar artery” And “aneurysm” AND “anatomical variants” were used to search the review. The reasons for anomalous variation anastomosis between bilateral PICAs were analyzed. Results: The aneurysm was resected successfully. Post-operative 3-D DSA revealed the disappearance of the aneurysm. The vessel wall of anastomotic PICA showed neovascularized hyperplasia, abnormal arrangement of smooth muscle, CD31+ endothelial cells, and SMA+ smooth muscle cells. In contrast, when it came to aneurysm, the wall at the location of the fracture thinned, which could be used to explain that the local nodular protrusion was formed and CD31+ endothelial cells existed. No neurological deficits were found at her 1-year followup visit (mRS score of 0). Conclusion: Direct resection of ruptured aneurysm associated with bilateral anomalous posterior inferior cerebellar anastomotic arteries was an effective treatment and careful consideration of the anatomical characteristics concerning the interesting aneurysm and the variant PICA was critical for sate treatment. Gene therapy is one of the target therapies with promising clinical use for gastric cancer (GC). However, the delivery of the CRISPR/Cas9/sgRNA (RNP) gene editing tool severely limits the practical therapeutic effect of GC. Therefore, it is a great challenge to develop an RNP delivery system that is simple to prepare and can rapidly encapsulate RNP while achieving high delivery and gene editing efficiency. We developed, for the first time, the CRISPR/Cas9@PDA nano-delivery system that can achieve high-efficiency delivery (95%) of CRISPR/Cas9-3NLS/sgHMGA2 and high-efficient HMGA2 gene editing (82%) of GC cells. In particular, the experiment's weak alkaline environment can not only protect the activity of CRISPR/Cas9-3NLS/sgHMGA2 but also trigger the self-polymerization of polydopamine (PDA). Meanwhile, the presence of KE in the CRISPR/Cas9 amino acid sequence can achieve the directional growth of PDA, thus forming a core-shell structure that protects CRISPR/Cas9-3NLS/sgHMGA2. This efficient CRISPR/Cas9-3NLS/sgHMGA2 delivery and HMGA2 gene editing ability has also been verified in mice, which can significantly inhibit tumor growth in mice. Insects have a long history of being used in medicine, with clear primary and secondary functions and less side effects, and the study and exploitation of medicinal insects have received increasing attention. Insects gut microbiota and their metabolites play an important role in protecting the hosts from other potentially harmful microbes, providing nutrients, promoting digestion and degradation, and regulating growth and metabolism of the hosts. However, there are still few studies linking the medicinal values of insects with their gut microbes. In this study, we focused on the specific gut microbiota common to medicinal insects, hoping to trace the potential connection between medicinal values and gut microbes of medicinal insects. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing data, we compared the gut microbiota of medicinal insects [ Periplaneta americana , Protaetia (Liocola) brevitarsis (Lewis) and Musca domestica ], in their medicinal stages, and non-medicinal insects (Hermetia illucens L., Tenebrio molitor , and Drosophila melanogaster), and found that the intestinal microbial richness of medicinal insects was higher, and there were significant differences in the microbial community structure between the two groups. We established a model using a random-forest method to preliminarily screen out several types of gut microbiota common to medicinal insects that may play medicinal values: Parabacteroides goldsteinii , Lactobacillus dextrinicus , Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis (B. infantis), and Vagococcus carniphilus. In particular, P. goldsteinii and B. infantis were most probably involved in the anti-inflammatory effects of medicinal insects. Our results revealed an association between medicinal insects and their gut microbes, providing new development directions and possibly potential tools for utilizing microbes to enhance the medicinal efficacy of medicinal insects. Medicinal plants are inhabited by diverse microbes in every compartment, and which play an essential role in host growth and development, nutrient absorption, synthesis of secondary metabolites, and resistance to biological and abiotic stress. However, the ecological processes that manage microbiota assembly and the phenotypic and metabolic characteristics of the core microbiota of Eucommia ulmoides remain poorly explored. Here, we systematically evaluated the effects of genotypes, compartment niches, and environmental conditions (climate, soil nutrition, and secondary metabolites) on the assembly of rhizosphere soil and bark associated bacterial communities. In addition, phenotypic and metabolic characteristics of E. ulmoides core microbiota, and their relationship with dominant taxa, rare taxa, and pharmacologically active compounds were deciphered. Results suggested that microbiota assembly along the two compartments were predominantly shaped by the environment (especially pH, relative humidity, and geniposide acid) and not by host genotype or compartment niche. There were 690 shared genera in the rhizosphere soil and bark, and the bark microbiota was mainly derived from rhizosphere soil. Core microbiota of E. ulmoides was a highly interactive "hub" microbes connecting dominant and rare taxa, and its phenotypic characteristics had a selective effect on compartment niches. Metabolic functions of the core microbiota included ammonia oxidation, nitrogen fixation, and polyhydroxybutyrate storage, which are closely related to plant growth or metabolism. Moreover, some core taxa were also significantly correlated with three active compounds. These findings provide an important scientific basis for sustainable agricultural management based on the precise regulation of the rhizosphere soil and bark microbiota of E. ulmoides. Colon cancer poses a great threat to human health. Currently, there is no effective treatment for colon cancer due to its complex causative factors. Immunotherapy has now become a new method for tumor treatment. In this study, 487 DEGs were screened from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and ImmPort database, and GeneOntology (GO) functional enrichment and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis was performed. Hierarchical clustering of all samples revealed a significant correlation between colon cancer and immunity. The weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) algorithm was used to identify key gene modules associated with immunity in colon cancer, here, module grey60 showed the highest correlation. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed using the STRING database to screen hub genes, and subsequently, 7 immune-related genes the most closely associated with colon cancer were identified by differential expression in cancer and paracancer. Finally, a risk prediction model was developed using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) COX analysis, and the accuracy of the model was validated by GSE14333. Background: Magnetic resonance (MR) scans are routine clinical procedures for monitoring people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Patient discomfort, timely scheduling, and financial burden motivate the need to accelerate MR scan time. We examined the clinical application of a deep learning (DL) model in restoring the image quality of accelerated routine clinical brain MR scans for PwMS. Methods: We acquired fast 3D T1w BRAVO and fast 3D T2w FLAIR MRI sequences (half the phase encodes and half the number of slices) in parallel to conventional parameters. Using a subset of the scans, we trained a DL model to generate images from fast scans with quality similar to the conventional scans and then applied the model to the remaining scans. We calculated clinically relevant T1w volumetrics (normalized whole brain, thalamic, gray matter, and white matter volume) for all scans and T2 lesion volume in a sub-analysis. We performed paired t -tests comparing conventional, fast, and fast with DL for these volumetrics, and fit repeated measures mixed-effects models to test for differences in correlations between volumetrics and clinically relevant patient-reported outcomes (PRO). Results: We found statistically significant but small differences between conventional and fast scans with DL for all T1w volumetrics. There was no difference in the extent to which the key T1w volumetrics correlated with clinically relevant PROs of MS symptom burden and neurological disability. Conclusion: A deep learning model that improves the image quality of the accelerated routine clinical brain MR scans has the potential to inform clinically relevant outcomes in MS. Objectives: The clinical results caused by spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) are disastrous to most patient. As tranexamic acid (TXA) has been proved to decrease the influence of ICH, we conducted this research to explore the function of TXA for the prognosis of ICH compared with placebo. Methods: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Clinicaltrials.gov for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that were performed to evaluate TXA vs. placebo for ICH up to February 2021. The data were assessed by Review Manager 5.3 software. The risk ratio (RR) and mean difference were analyzed using dichotomous outcomes and continuous outcomes, respectively, with a fixed effect model. Results: We collected 2,479 patients from four RCTs. Then, we took the change of hematoma volume, modified Rankin Scale (mRS), and adverse events as evaluation standard of the treatment for ICH. Through statistical analysis, we found that there is no obvious hematoma expansion effect after the application of TXA (RR = 1.05), and we proceeded the quantitative analysis of percentage change in hematoma volume from baseline, indicating that TXA could inhibit the expansion of hematoma volume (RR = −2.02) compared with placebo. However, according to the outcomes of mRS (0–1, RR = 1.04; 0–2, RR = 0.96), TXA cannot improve neurological functional prognosis. Background and Purpose: Data on the relationship among neutrophil count, intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS), and functional outcomes after endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for ischemic stroke patients remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the association between neutrophil count and prognosis of EVT patients and to determine whether the association was mediated by ICAS. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed consecutive patients who underwent EVT at two comprehensive stroke centers between June 2016 and December 2019. A remaining stenosis >70%, or a lesser degree of stenosis with a tendency toward re-occlusion or flow impairment during the procedure, was classified as ICAS. A poor outcome was defined as a 90-day modified Rankin Scale score of 3–6. Results: Of the 221 patients (mean age, 65.9 years; males, 61.1%) included in this study, 81 (36.3%) had ICAS, and 120 (54.3%) experienced a poor outcome at 90 days, respectively. In the multivariate adjustment for potential confounders, neutrophil count (odds ratio [OR], 1.19; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04–1.36; P = 0.012) and presence of ICAS (OR, 2.65; 95CI%, 1.28–5.45; P = 0.008) were risk factors of poor outcomes. Furthermore, mediation analysis indicated that total ICAS mediated the association between increased neutrophil count and worse functional outcome after EVT (the regression coefficient was changed by 11.7% for poor outcome, and 17.1% for modified Rankin Scale score, respectively). Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that a higher neutrophil count might increase the risk of a poor outcome among ischemic stroke patients who underwent EVT, which was partially mediated by ICAS. The family Thelebolaceae belongs to the order Thelebolales, class Leotiomycetes, and contains 22 genera. In this study, we introduce a new genus Solomyces gen. nov. in the family Thelebolaceae, which is supported by morphological observation and multilocus-based [internal transcribed spacers (ITS) + LSU and ITS + LSU + MCM7 + EF1A + RPB2 ] phylogenetic analysis. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic inference analyses indicated that Solomyces is a distinct genus within this family. The new genus is compared against related Thelebolaceae genera, and its description and illustration are provided. This genus comprises one new species and one unnamed species (including two strains). We also report the addition of four new species – Pseudogymnoascus shaanxiensis , Pseudogymnoascus guizhouensis , Pseudogymnoascus sinensis , and Geomyces obovatus – in the family Thelebolaceae and present their morphological and phylogenetic characterizations. BackgroundRapid economic growth in China has led to significant resource and environmental challenges, particularly in less economically developed regions. This study aims to identify effective strategies for achieving green, low-carbon development in these regions during the economic transition.MethodsWe employed the Fuzzy-Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) method to scrutinize the impact of economic, demographic, industrial, and technological factors on low-carbon development across a selection of Chinese provinces, including Qinghai, Hunan, Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Hainan, and Chongqing. This approach facilitates a nuanced exploration of the multifaceted determinants of low-carbon progress within the regional contexts of China.ResultsThe study identified three distinct paths to low-carbon development, each with unique prioritization characteristics. These paths are the traditional early low-carbon path, the semi-modernized mid-carbon path, and the post-modernized low-carbon path. Each path offers tailored strategies for less developed regions to enhance their environmental innovation capacity and global competitiveness.ConclusionThis research contributes a novel perspective for regional sustainable development in China by offering tailored low-carbon development strategies for less developed regions. Background & aimsHBV infection initiates autoimmune responses, leading to autoantibody generation. This research explores the role of autoantibodies in HBV-related Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure (ACLF), offering novel perspectives for clinical management.MethodWe applied immunoprecipitation and iTRAQ techniques to screen for autoantibodies in serum from HBV-related cirrhosis patients and conducted detection with conformation- stabilizing ELISA in a cohort of 238 HBV-infected individuals and 49 health controls. Our results were validated in a retrospective cohort comprising 106 ACLF patients and further assessed through immunohistochemical analysis in liver tissues from an additional 10 ACLF cases.ResultsUtilizing iTRAQ, we identified Argonaute1-3 autoantibodies (AGO-Abs) in this research. AGO2-Abs notably increased in cirrhosis, decompensation, and further in ACLF, unlike AGO1-Abs and AGO3-Abs. This reflects disease severity correlation. Logistic regression and COX models confirmed AGO2-Abs as independent prognostic indicators for decompensated liver cirrhosis (DLC) and ACLF. In the ROC analysis, AGO2-Abs showed significant diagnostic value for predicting 28- and 90-day mortality (AUROC = 0.853 and 0.854, respectively). Furthermore, combining AGO2-Abs with the Child-Pugh, MELD, and AARC scores significantly improved their predictive accuracy (P < 0.05). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed poorer survival for AGO2-Abs levels above 99.14μg/ml. These findings were supported by a retrospective validation cohort. Additionally, immunohistochemistry revealed band-like AGO2 expression in periportal liver areas, with AGO2-Abs levels correlating with total bilirubin, indicating a potential role in exacerbating liver damage through periportal functions.ConclusionsAGO2-Abs is a robust biomarker for predicting the mortality of patients with HBV-related ACLF.

Although overly aggressive enteral nutrition immediately after burn injury has potential risks, nutritional disruption after a severe burn can also increase infection risk and delay wound healing. For approximately six decades, the Ruijin Hospital Burn Center has used two distinct approaches for patients during the early period after burn injury: complete fasting or adaptive feeding. Notably, adaptive feeding more closely resembles enteral nutrition. In this retrospective study, we analyzed factors influencing the selection of either modality, as well as the benefits of adaptive feeding. We sought to promote adaptive feeding as a precursor to initiating enteral nutrition.Patients and methodsThis retrospective study analyzed medical data from adult patients with extensive burns between January 2009 and December 2020. Oxidative stress and obesity are critical risk factors for metabolic syndrome. The consumption of functional food ingredients can a viable strategy to alleviate oxidative stress and obesity. In this study, the hydro-ethanolic extract of the edible insect Polyrhachis vicina was prepared and its bioactive components were characterized. The total polyphenol contents, total flavonoid contents, antioxidant and pancreatic lipase (PL) inhibitory activities of the extract were determined in vitro. In total, 60 bioactive components were tentatively identified in the P. vicina extract. Polyphenols and fatty acids were further quantified using LC-MS and GC-MS, respectively. P. vicina extract possessed excellent antioxidant and PL inhibition activities. Salicylic acid, gallic acid, liquiritigenin, and naringenin, which were the major polyphenols in the P. vicina extract, interacted with PL through hydrogen bonding, hydrophilic or hydrophobic and pi-cation interactions. Thus, P. vicina extract can be used as a nutraceutical to alleviate oxidative stress-induced disease and manage obesity.

Using a subset of the scans, we trained a DL model to generate images from fast scans with quality similar to the conventional scans and then applied the model to the remaining scans. We calculated clinically relevant T1w volumetrics (normalized whole brain, thalamic, gray matter, and white matter volume) for all scans and T2 lesion volume in a sub-analysis. We performed paired t-tests comparing conventional, fast, and fast with DL for these volumetrics, and fit repeated measures mixed-effects models to test for differences in correlations between volumetrics and clinically relevant patient-reported outcomes (PRO).Results: We found statistically significant but small differences between conventional and fast scans with DL for all T1w volumetrics. There was no difference in the extent to which the key T1w volumetrics correlated with clinically relevant PROs of MS symptom burden and neurological disability.Conclusion: A deep learning model that improves the image quality of the accelerated routine clinical brain MR scans has the potential to inform clinically relevant outcomes in MS.
