The article reports that Dermatology is the least diverse medical specialties as studies addressing barriers faced by underrepresented in medicine (UIM) applicants to dermatology. Topics include process by dermatology residency programs may contribute to higher rates of matching among Black applicants; and disadvantaged backgrounds and to have financial concerns about the residency application process.

The article presents a case study of a 50-year-old woman presented as a direct admit from the rheumatology clinic for diffuse muscle weakness of 8 months' duration, 40-pound unintentional weight loss, pruritic rash, bilateral joint pains, and dry eyes. His Anti-MDA5 (melanoma differentiation–associated gene 5 antibody)–positive dermatomyositis associated with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. His Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) causes hemophagocytosis.

It has been suggested that the use of etanercept for treatment of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) might provide improved mortality benefit and decreased skin healing times. This retrospective study compared the use of single-dose subcutaneous etanercept to intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and supportive care alone. Thirteen patients were treated with a single dose (50 mg) of subcutaneous etanercept. Results of this study support the use of etanercept as a potentially beneficial agent in the treatment of SJS/TEN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune condition characterized by a thrombotic event and/or pregnancy morbidity in the presence of persistently elevated antiphospholipid (aPL) antibody titers, which are most prevalent in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus but also have been associated with other autoimmune, malignant, and infectious diseases. In contrast to the clear correlation between high aPL antibody titers and thrombotic events in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, the pathogenic role of these autoantibodies in association with other diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is not as well defined. We report a case of APS manifesting as cutaneous ulceration and necrosis in a patient with severe RA.

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is a rare autoimmune disease of the cartilaginous structures of the body with many systemic manifestations including meningoencephalitis (ME). We present a case of a man with RP-associated ME that was responsive to steroid treatment. An updated literature review of 7 cases of RP-associated ME also is provided. Early diagnosis of this condition may be of benefit to this select population of patients, and further research regarding the prognosis, mechanisms, and treatment of RP may be necessary in the future.
