Abstract: The double differential production cross sections, $d^2\sigma/d\Omega dE$, for hydrogen isotopes and charged pions in the reaction of p + Nb at 3.5 GeV proton beam energy have been measured by the High Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer (HADES). Thanks to the high acceptance of HADES at forward emission angles and usage of its magnetic field, the measured energy range of hydrogen isotopes could be significantly extended in comparison to the relatively scarce experimental data available in the literature. The data provide information about the development of the intranuclear cascade in the proton-nucleus collisions. They can as well be utilized to study the rate of energy/momentum dissipation in the nuclear systems and the mechanism of elementary and composite particle production in excited nuclear matter at normal density. Data of this type are important also for technological and medical applications. Our results are compared to models developed to describe the processes relevant to nuclear spallation (INCL++) or oriented to probe either the elementary hadronic processes in nuclear matter or the behavior of compressed nuclear matter (GiBUU).

Abstract: High-statistics $$\pi ^-\pi ^-$$π-π- and $$\pi ^+\pi ^+$$π+π+ femtoscopy data are presented for Au + Au collisions at $$\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 2.4~\hbox {GeV}$$sNN=2.4GeV, measured with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The experimental correlation functions allow the determination of the space-time extent of the corresponding emission sources via a comparison to models. The emission source, parametrized as three-dimensional Gaussian distribution, is studied in dependence on pair transverse momentum, azimuthal emission angle with respect to the reaction plane, collision centrality and beam energy. For all centralities and transverse momenta, a geometrical distribution of ellipsoidal shape is found in the plane perpendicular to the beam direction with the larger extension perpendicular to the reaction plane. For large transverse momenta, the corresponding eccentricity approaches the initial eccentricity. The eccentricity is smallest for most central collisions, where the shape is almost circular. The magnitude of the tilt angle of the emission ellipsoid in the reaction plane decreases with increasing centrality and increasing transverse momentum. All source radii increase with centrality, largely exhibiting a linear rise with the cube root of the number of participants. A substantial charge-sign difference of the source radii is found, appearing most pronounced at low transverse momentum. The extracted source parameters are consistent with the extrapolation of their energy dependence down from higher energies.

Abstract: International audience; We have measured the widths and energies of the 1s2s2p2P1/2,3/2→1s22s2S1/2 transitions in lithiumlike sulfur and argon, as well as the energies of the forbidden 1s2s2p4P5/2→1s22s2S1/2 M2 transition in both elements. All measurements were performed with a double-flat-crystal spectrometer without the use of any reference line. The transition energy measurements have accuracies ranging from 2.3 to 6.4 ppm depending on the element and line intensity. The widths and the intensity ratios of the 1s2s2p2P1/2,3/2→1s22s2S1/2 lines have also been measured. These are reference-free measurements of transitions in core-excited lithiumlike ions and have an accuracy comparable to the best relative measurements. We have also performed multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations of the widths, energies, and intensity ratios. An extensive comparison between existing experimental results and theory is performed, and Bayesian techniques are employed to extract the energy of the 1s2p24P1/2→1s22p2P1/2 transition in sulfur and identify contaminant transitions.

Abstract: Luminosity is a measure of the colliding frequency between beam and target and it is a crucial parameter for the measurement of absolute values, such as reaction cross sections. In this paper, we make use of experimental data from the ESR storage ring to demonstrate that the luminosity can be precisely determined by modelling the measured Rutherford scattering distribution. The obtained results are in good agreement with an independent measurement based on the x-ray normalization method. Our new method provides an alternative way to precisely measure the luminosity in low-energy stored-beam configurations. This can be of great value in particular in dedicated low-energy storage rings where established methods are difficult or impossible to apply., 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: International audience; Flow coefficients vn of the orders n=1–6 are measured with the High-Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI for protons, deuterons, and tritons as a function of centrality, transverse momentum, and rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sNN=2.4 GeV. Combining the information from the flow coefficients of all orders allows us to construct for the first time, at collision energies of a few GeV, a multidifferential picture of the angular emission pattern of these particles. It reflects the complicated interplay between the effect of the central fireball pressure on the emission of particles and their subsequent interaction with spectator matter. The high precision information on higher order flow coefficients is a major step forward in constraining the equation of state of dense baryonic matter.

Abstract: International audience; We present an analysis of proton-number fluctuations in sNN=2.4 GeV Au197+Au197 collisions measured with the High-Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt. With the help of extensive detector simulations done with Isospin Quantum Molecular Dynamics (IQMD) transport model events including nuclear clusters, various nuisance effects influencing the observed proton cumulants have been investigated. Acceptance and efficiency corrections have been applied as a function of fine-grained rapidity and transverse momentum bins, as well as considering local track density dependencies. Next, the effects of volume changes within particular centrality selections have been considered and beyond-leading-order corrections have been applied to the data. The efficiency and volume-corrected proton number moments and cumulants Kn of orders n=1, 2, 3, and 4 have been obtained as a function of centrality and phase-space bin, as well as the corresponding correlators Cn. We find that the observed correlators show a power-law scaling with the mean number of protons, i.e., Cn∝〈N〉n, indicative of mostly long-range multiparticle correlations in momentum space. We also present a comparison of our results with Au + Au collision data obtained at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at similar centralities but higher sNN.

Abstract: We have measured the widths and energies of the 1s2s2p 2 P 1/2,3/2 → 1s 2 2s 2 S 1/2 transitions in lithiumlike sulfur and argon, as well as the energies of the forbidden 1s2s2p 4 P 5/2 → 1s 2 2s 2 S 1/2 M2 transition in both elements. All measurements were performed with a double-flat crystal spectrometer without the use of any reference line. The transition energy measurements have accuracies ranging from 2.3 ppm to 6.4 ppm depending on the element and line intensity. The widths and the intensity ratios of the 1s2s2p 2 P 1/2,3/2 → 1s 2 2s 2 S 1/2 lines have also been measured. These are the first reference-free measurements of transitions in core-excited lithiumlike ions, and have an accuracy comparable to the best relative measurements. We have also performed multi-configuration Dirac-Fock calculations of the widths, energies and intensity ratios. Extensive comparison between existing experimental results and theory is performed, and Bayesian techniques employed to extract the energy of the 1s 2p 2 4 P 1/2 → 1s 2 2p 2 P 1/2 transition in sulfur and identify contaminant transitions.

Abstract: International audience; We present first data on sub-threshold production of K s0 mesons and Λ hyperons in Au+Au collisions at sNN=2.4 GeV. We observe an universal 〈Apart〉 scaling of hadrons containing strangeness, independent of their corresponding production thresholds. Comparing the yields, their 〈Apart〉 scaling, and the shapes of the rapidity and the pt spectra to state-of-the-art transport model (UrQMD, HSD, IQMD) predictions, we find that none of them can simultaneously describe these observables with reasonable χ2 values.

Abstract: We report the first measurement of low-energy proton-capture cross sections of $^{124}$Xe in a heavy ion storage ring. $^{124}$Xe$^{54+}$ ions of five different beam energies between 5.5 AMeV and 8 AMeV were stored to collide with a windowless hydrogen target. The $^{125}$Cs reaction products were directly detected. The interaction energies are located on the high energy tail of the Gamow window for hot, explosive scenarios such as supernovae and X-ray binaries. The results serve as an important test of predicted astrophysical reaction rates in this mass range. Good agreement in the prediction of the astrophysically important proton width at low energy is found, with only a 30% difference between measurement and theory. Larger deviations are found above the neutron emission threshold, where also neutron- and ${\gamma}$-widths significantly impact the cross sections. The newly established experimental method is a very powerful tool to investigate nuclear reactions on rare ion beams at low center-of-mass energies.

Abstract: International audience; About 10 μs after the Big Bang, the universe was filled—in addition to photons and leptons—with strong-interaction matter consisting of quarks and gluons, which transitioned to hadrons at temperatures close to kT = 150 MeV and densities several times higher than those found in nuclei. This quantum chromodynamics (QCD) matter can be created in the laboratory as a transient state by colliding heavy ions at relativistic energies. The different phases in which QCD matter may exist depend for example on temperature, pressure or baryochemical potential, and can be probed by studying the emission of electromagnetic radiation. Electron–positron pairs emerge from the decay of virtual photons, which immediately decouple from the strong interaction, and thus provide information about the properties of QCD matter at various stages. Here, we report the observation of virtual photon emission from baryon-rich QCD matter. The spectral distribution of the electron–positron pairs is nearly exponential, providing evidence for a source of temperature in excess of 70 MeV with constituents whose properties have been modified, thus reflecting peculiarities of strong-interaction QCD matter. Its bulk properties are similar to the dense matter formed in the final state of a neutron star merger, as apparent from recent multimessenger observation.

Abstract: We investigate identical pion HBT intensity interferometry for central Au+Au collisions at 1.23A GeV. High-statistics $\pi^-\pi^-$ and $\pi^+\pi^+$ data are measured with HADES at SIS18/GSI. The radius parameters, derived from the correlation function depending on relative momenta in the longitudinal-comoving system and parametrized as three-dimensional Gaussian distribution, are studied as function of transverse momentum. A substantial charge-sign difference of the source radii is found, particularly pronounced at low transverse momentum. The extracted Coulomb-corrected source parameters agree well with a smooth extrapolation of the center-of-mass energy dependence established at higher energies, extending the corresponding excitation functions down towards a very low energy. Our data would thus rather disfavour any strong energy dependence of the radius parameters in the low energy region., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, updated author and grant lists

Abstract: International audience; We performed a reference-free measurement of the transition energies of the 1s2p1P1→1s21S0 line in He-like argon, and of the 1s2s22p1P1→1s22s21S0 line in Be-like argon ions. The highly charged ions were produced in the plasma of an electron-cyclotron resonance ion source. Both energy measurements were performed with an accuracy better than 3 parts in 106, using a double flat-crystal spectrometer, without reference to any theoretical or experimental energy. The 1s2s22p1P1→1s22s21S0 transition measurement is the first reference-free measurement for this core-excited transition. The 1s2p1P1→1s21S0 transition measurement confirms recent measurement performed at the Heidelberg electron-beam ion trap. The width measurement in the He-like transition provides test of a purely radiative decay calculation. In the case of the Be-like argon transition, the width results from the sum of a radiative channel and three main Auger channels. We also performed multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations of transition energies and rates and have done an extensive comparison with theory and other experimental data. For both measurements reported here, we find agreement with the most recent theoretical calculations within the combined theoretical and experimental uncertainties.

Abstract: International audience; The centrality determination for Au + Au collisions at 1.23A GeV, as measured with HADES at the GSI-SIS18, is described. In order to extract collision geometry related quantities, such as the average impact parameter or number of participating nucleons, a Glauber Monte Carlo approach is employed. For the application of this model to collisions at this relatively low centre-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt{s_{{\rm NN}}} = 2.42$ GeV special investigations were performed. As a result a well defined procedure to determine centrality classes for ongoing analyses of heavy-ion data is established.

Abstract: The production of $\Sigma^{0}$ baryons in the nuclear reaction p (3.5 GeV) + Nb (corresponding to $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=3.18$ GeV) is studied with the detector set-up HADES at GSI, Darmstadt. $\Sigma^{0}$s were identified via the decay $\Sigma^{0} \rightarrow \Lambda \gamma$ with subsequent decays $\Lambda \rightarrow p \pi^{-}$ in coincidence with a $e^{+}e^{-}$ pair from either external ($\gamma \rightarrow e^{+} e^{-}$) or internal (Dalitz decay $\gamma^{*}\rightarrow e^{+} e^{-}$) gamma conversions. The differential $\Sigma^0$ cross section integrated over the detector acceptance, i.e. the rapidity interval $0.5 < y < 1.1$, has been extracted as $\Delta\sigma_{\Sigma^{0}} = 2.3 \pm (0.2)^{stat} \pm \left(^{+0.6}_{-0.6}\right)^{sys} \pm (0.2)^{norm}$ mb, yielding the inclusive production cross section in full phase space $\sigma^{total}_{\Sigma^{0}} = 5.8 \pm (0.5)^{stat} \pm \left(^{+1.4}_{-1.4}\right)^{sys} \pm (0.6)^{norm} \pm (1.7)^{extrapol}$ mb by averaging over different extrapolation methods. The $\Lambda_{all}$/$\Sigma^{0}$ ratio within the HADES acceptance is equal to 2.3 $\pm$ $(0.2)^{stat}$ $\pm$ $(^{+0.6}_{-0.6})^{sys}$. The obtained rapidity and momentum distributions are compared to transport model calculations. Abstract: We report on the investigation of dielectron production in tagged quasi-free neutron-proton collisions by using a deuteron beam of kinetic energy 1.25 GeV/u inpinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Our measurements with HADES confirm a significant excess of $e^+e^-$ pairs above the $\pi^{0}$ mass in the exclusive channel $dp \to npe^{+}e^{-}(p_{spect})$ as compared to the exclusive channel $ppe^{+}e^{-}$ measured in proton-proton collisions at the same energy. That excess points to different bremsstrahlung production mechanisms. Two models were evaluated for the role of the charged pion exchange between nucleons and double-$\Delta$ excitation combined with intermediate $\rho$-meson production. Differential cross sections as a function of the $e^+e^-$ invariant mass and of the angles of the virtual photon, proton and electrons provide valuable constraints and encourage further investigations on both experimental and theoretical side., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: The combination of a production target for secondary beams, an optimized ion optical beam line setting, in-beam detectors for minimum ionizing particles with high rate capability, and an efficient large acceptance spectrometer around the reaction target constitutes an experimental opportunity to study in detail hadronic interactions utilizing pion beams impinging on nucleons and nuclei. For the 0.4-2.0GeV/c pion momentum regime such a facility is located at the heavy ion synchrotron accelerator SIS18 in Darmstadt (Germany). Abstract: International audience; In this work, we present a pilot experiment in the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI devoted to impact parameter sensitive studies of inner shell atomic processes for low-energy (heavy-) ion-atom collisions. The experiment was performed with bare and He-like xenon ions (Xe 54+ , Xe 52+ ) colliding with neutral xenon gas atoms, resulting in a symmetric collision system. This choice of the projectile charge states was made in order to compare the effect of a filled K-shell with the empty one. The projectile and target X-rays have been measured at different observation angles for all impact parameters as well as for the impact parameter range of ∼35–70 fm.

Abstract: The exploration of the unique properties of stored and cooled beams of highly-charged ions as provided by heavy-ion storage rings has opened novel and fascinating research opportunities in the realm of atomic and nuclear physics research. Since the late 1980s, pioneering work has been performed at the CRYRING at Stockholm (Abrahamsson et al. 1993) and at the Test Storage Ring (TSR) at Heidelberg (Baumann et al. 1988). For the heaviest ions in the highest charge-states, a real quantum jump was achieved in the early 1990s by the commissioning of the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in Darmstadt (Franzke 1987) where challenging experiments on the electron dynamics in the strong field regime as well as nuclear physics studies on exotic nuclei and at the borderline to atomic physics were performed. Meanwhile also at Lanzhou a heavy-ion storage ring has been taken in operation, exploiting the unique research opportunities in particular for medium-heavy ions and exotic nuclei (Xia et al. 2002).

Abstract: The HADES data from p + Nb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √sNN = 3.2 GeV are analyzed employing a statistical hadronization model. The model can successfully describe the production yields of the identified hadrons π0, η, Ʌ, K0 s, ω with parameters Tchem = (99 ± 11) MeV and μb = (619 ± 34) MeV, which fit well into the chemical freeze-out systematics found in heavy-ion collisions. In addition, we reanalyze our previous HADES data from Ar + KCl collisions at √SNN = 2.6 GeV with an updated version of the model. We address equilibration in heavy-ion collisions by testing two aspects: the description of yields and the regularity of freeze-out parameters from a statistical model fit as a function of colliding energy and system size. Despite its success, the model fails to describe the observed Ξ- yields in both, p + Nb and Ar + KCl. Special emphasis is put on feed-down contributions from higher-lying resonance states as a possible explanation for the observed excess. © 2016, SIF, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. 52 6 Cited By :6

Abstract: We report on the first measurement of $p\Lambda$ and $pp$ correlations via the femtoscopy method in p+Nb reactions at $\mathrm{\sqrt{s_{NN}}=3.18} ~\mathrm{GeV}$, studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES). By comparing the experimental correlation function to model calculations, a source size for $pp$ pairs of $r_{0,pp}=2.02 \pm 0.01(\mathrm{stat})^{+0.11}_{-0.12} (\mathrm{sys}) ~\mathrm{fm}$ and a slightly smaller value for $p\Lambda$ of $r_{0,\Lambda p}=1.62 \pm 0.02(\mathrm{stat})^{+0.19}_{-0.08}(\mathrm{sys}) ~\mathrm{fm}$ is extracted. Using the geometrical extent of the particle emitting region, determined experimentally with $pp$ correlations as reference together with a source function from a transport model, it is possible to study different sets of scattering parameters. The $p\Lambda$ correlation is proven sensitive to predicted scattering length values from chiral effective field theory. We demonstrate that the femtoscopy technique can be used as valid alternative to the analysis of scattering data to study the hyperon-nucleon interaction., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: International audience; The tagged quasi-free np→npπ+π−np→npπ+π− reaction has been studied experimentally with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at GSI at a deuteron incident beam energy of 1.25 GeV/nucleon (View the MathML sources∼2.42 GeV/c for the quasi-free collision). For the first time, differential distributions of solid statistics for π+π−π+π− production in np collisions have been collected in the region corresponding to the large transverse momenta of the secondary particles. The invariant mass and angular distributions for the np→npπ+π−np→npπ+π− reaction are compared with different models. This comparison confirms the dominance of the t -channel with ΔΔ contribution. It also validates the changes previously introduced in the Valencia model to describe two-pion production data in other isospin channels, although some deviations are observed, especially for the π+π−π+π− invariant mass spectrum. The extracted total cross section is also in much better agreement with this model. Our new measurement puts useful constraints for the existence of the conjectured dibaryon resonance at mass M∼2.38 GeVM∼2.38 GeV and with width Γ∼70 MeVΓ∼70 MeV.

Abstract: The collision system U88+ + N2 at a low-relativistic projectile energy of 90 MeV/u has been analyzed experimentally and theoretically with respect to fast electrons emitted with a velocity ve close to the projectile velocity, vp ≈ ve, at an observation angle of e ≈ 0°, i.e., in the direction of the projectile beam. Three distinct processes are identified, where each of the underlying charge-transfer mechanisms leads to a characteristic feature in the asymmetry of the observed electron energy distribution. The experimental results for each of the three processes are compared to the corresponding theoretical models.

Abstract: International audience; In this contribution, we present an experimental and theoretical study of the proton- and electron- impact excitation effects in helium-like uranium ions in relativistic collisions with different gaseous targets. The experiment was carried out at the experimental storage ring at GSI Darmstadt. Our experimental results are in agreement with predictions of the state-of-the art theory which treats both processes within the relativistic framework.

Abstract: Employing the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis framework (PWA), we have analyzed HADES data of the reaction $p(3.5GeV)+p\to pK^{+}\Lambda$. This reaction might contain information about the kaonic cluster "$ppK^-$" via its decay into $p\Lambda$. Due to interference effects in our coherent description of the data, a hypothetical $\overline{K}NN$ (or, specifically "$ppK^-$") cluster signal must not necessarily show up as a pronounced feature (e.g. a peak) in an invariant mass spectra like $p\Lambda$. Our PWA analysis includes a variety of resonant and non-resonant intermediate states and delivers a good description of our data (various angular distributions and two-hadron invariant mass spectra) without a contribution of a $\overline{K}NN$ cluster. At a confidence level of CL$_{s}$=95\% such a cluster can not contribute more than 2-12\% to the total cross section with a $pK^{+}\Lambda$ final state, which translates into a production cross-section between 0.7 $\mu b$ and 4.2 $\mu b$, respectively. Abstract: International audience; The experimental investigation of quantum-electrodydamic contributions to the binding energies of inner shells of highly charged heavy ions requires an accurate spectroscopy in the region of hard x-rays suitable at a limited source strength. For this purpose the focusing compensated asymmetric Laue crystal optics has been developed and a twin-spectrometer assembly has been built and commissioned at the experimental storage ring of the GSI Helmholtzzentrum Darmstadt. We characterize the crystal optics and demonstrate the usefulness of the instrumentation for accurate spectroscopy of both stationary and fast moving x-ray sources. The experimental procedures discussed here may also be applied for other spectroscopic studies where a transition from conventional germanium x-ray detectors to crystal spectrometers seems too demanding because of low source intensity.

Abstract: International audience; We have studied the excitation of H-like and He-like uranium (U91+ and U90+) in relativistic collisions with gaseous targets by observing the subsequent x-ray emission. The experiment was conducted at the ESR storage ring of the GSI accelerator facility in Darmstadt, Germany. The measurements were performed with a newly developed multi-phase target at different collision energies. This enabled us to explore the proton (nucleus) impact excitation as well as the electron impact excitation processes in the relativistic collisions. The large fine-structure splitting in uranium allowed us to unambiguously resolve excitation to different L-shell levels. Moreover, information about the population of different magnetic sublevels has been obtained via an angular differential study of the decay photons associated with the subsequent de-excitation process. The experimental results are compared with calculations performed within the relativistic framework including excitation mechanisms due to both protons (nucleus) and electrons.

Abstract: Results on $\Lambda$ hyperon production are reported for collisions of p(3.5 GeV) + Nb, studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18 at GSI Helmholtzzentrum for Heavy-Ion Research, Darmstadt. The transverse mass distributions in rapidity bins are well described by Boltzmann shapes with a maximum inverse slope parameter of about $90\,$MeV at a rapidity of $y=1.0$, i.e. slightly below the center-of-mass rapidity for nucleon-nucleon collisions, $y_{cm}=1.12$. The rapidity density decreases monotonically with increasing rapidity within a rapidity window ranging from 0.3 to 1.3. The $\Lambda$ phase-space distribution is compared with results of other experiments and with predictions of two transport approaches which are available publicly. None of the present versions of the employed models is able to fully reproduce the experimental distributions, i.e. in absolute yield and in shape. Presumably, this finding results from an insufficient modelling in the transport models of the elementary processes being relevant for $\Lambda$ production, rescattering and absorption. The present high-statistics data allow for a genuine two-dimensional investigation as a function of phase space of the self-analyzing $\Lambda$ polarization in the weak decay $\Lambda\rightarrow p \pi^-$. Finite negative values of the polarization in the order of $5-20\,\%$ are observed over the entire phase space studied. The absolute value of the polarization increases almost linearly with increasing transverse momentum for $p_t>300\,$MeV/c and increases with decreasing rapidity for $y < 0.8$., Comment: accepted by Eur. Abstract: International audience; We have built a vacuum double crystal spectrometer, which coupled to an electron-cyclotron resonance ion source, allows absolute measurements of low-energy X-ray transitions in highly charged ions with accuracies of the order of a few parts per million. We describe in detail the instrument and its performance. Furthermore, we present a few spectra of n = 2 -> n = 1 transitions in Ar14+, Ar15+ and Ar16+. We have developed an ab initio simulation code that allows us to obtain accurate line profiles. It can reproduce experimental spectra with unprecedented accuracy. The quality of the profiles allows the direct determination of line width.

Abstract: See paper for full list of authors; We present an analysis of the Λ(1405) resonance produced in the reaction p+p→Σ±+π∓+K++p at 3.5 GeV kinetic beam energy measured with the High Acceptance Dielectron Spectrometer (HADES) at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI). The two charged decay channels Λ(1405)→Σ±π∓ have been reconstructed for the first time in p+p collisions. The efficiency and acceptance-corrected spectral shapes show a peak position clearly below 1400 MeV/c2. We find a total production cross section of σΛ(1405)=9.2±0.9±0.7−1.0+3.3 μb. The analysis of its polar angle distribution suggests that the Λ(1405) is produced isotropically in the p−p center-of-mass system (CMS).

Abstract: See paper for full list of authors; This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the P−− ANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole P−− ANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. The results are presented, and the time lines to construct the STT are described.

Abstract: The projectile excitation of high-Z ions has been investigated in relativistic ion-atoms collisions by observing the subsequent x-ray emission. Within this experiment information about the population of the magnetic sublevels has been obtained via an angular differential study of the decay photons associated with the subsequent de-excitation process. In addition, we have observed for the first time the effect of electron-impact excitation in a heavy highly charged ion undergoing a collision with a neutral atom.

Abstract: Data on inclusive dielectron production are presented for the reaction p+p at 2.2 GeV measured with the high acceptance dielectron spectrometer (HADES). Our results supplemented data obtained earlier in this bombarding energy regime with the dilepton spectrometer (DLS) and HADES. The comparison with the 2.09 GeV DLS data is discussed. The reconstructed e+e- pair distributions are confronted with simulations, revealing an excess yield at invariant masses around 0.5 GeV/c2. Abstract: We present results of an exclusive measurement of the first excited state of the Sigma hyperon, Sigma(1385)^+, produced in p+p -> Sigma^+ + K^+ + n at 3.5 GeV beam energy. The extracted data allow to study in detail the invariant mass distribution of the Sigma(1385)^+. The mass distribution is well described by a relativistic Breit-Wigner function with a maximum at m_0 = 1383.2 +- 0.9 MeV/c^2 and a width of 40.2 +- 2.1 MeV/c^2. The exclusive production cross-section comes out to be 22.27 +- 0.89 +- 1.56 +3.07 -2.10 mu b. Angular distributions of the Sigma(1385)^+ in different reference frames are found to be compatible with the hypothesis that 33 % of Sigma(1385)^+ result from the decay of an intermediate Delta^{++} resonance., 12 pages; 12 figures; submitted to PRC

Abstract: International audience; We present the first clear identification and highly accurate measurement of the intra-shell transition $1s2p\, ^3\!P_2 \to 1s2s\, ^3\!S_1$ of He-like uranium performed via X-ray spectroscopy. The present experiment has been conducted at the gas-jet target of the ESR storage ring in GSI (Darmstadt, Germany) where a Bragg spectrometer, with a bent germanium crystal, and a Ge(i) detector were mounted. Using the ESR deceleration capabilities, we performed a differential measurement between the $1s2p\, ^3\!P_2 \to 1s2s\, ^3\!S_1$ He-like U transition energy, at 4510 eV, and the $1s^22p\ ^2\!P_{3/2 } \to 1s^22s\, ^2\!S_{1/2}$ Li-like U transition energy, at 4460 eV. By a proper choice of the ion velocities, the X-ray energies from the He- and Li-like ions could be measured, in the laboratory frame, at the same photon energy. This allowed for a drastic reduction of the experimental systematic uncertainties, principally due to the Doppler effect, and for a comparison with the theory without the uncertainties arising from one-photon QED predictions and nuclear size corrections.

Abstract: One- and few-electron ions traditionally serve as an important testing ground for fundamental atomic structure theories and for the effects of QED, relativity and electron correlation. In the domain of high nuclear charges, new opportunities open up for precise testing and consolidating of the present understanding of the atomic structure in the regime of extreme electromagnetic fields. In this review, the current progress in experimental investigations of the heaviest H- and He-like systems at GSI Darmstadt is presented together with the planned future developments.

Abstract: The two-photon decay of the 2S state to the ground state in dressed atoms and one- or two-electron ions has been studied for several decades. Relativistic calculations have shown an Z-dependence of the spectral shape of this two-photon transition in one- or two-electron ions. We have measured the spectral distribution of the 1s2s $^1\!S_0$ → 1s 2 $^1\!S_0$ two-photon transition in He-like tin at the ESR storage ring using a new approach for such experiments. In this method, relativistic collisions of initially Li-like projectiles with a gaseous target were used to populate exclusively the first excited state, 1s2s, of He-like tin, which provided a clean two-photon spectrum. The measured two-photon spectral distribution was compared with fully relativistic calculations. The obtained results show very good agreement with the calculations for He-like tin.

Abstract: Results on pp, π+π+, and π-π- intensity interferometry are reported for collisions of Ar+KCl at 1.76$A$~GeV beam energy, studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18/GSI. The experimental correlation functions as a function of the relative momentum are compared to model calculations allowing the determination of the space-time extent of the corresponding emission sources. The π π source radii are found significantly larger than the pp emission radius. The present radii do well complement the source-size excitation functions of the collision system of size $A+A \simeq 40+40$. The pp source radius at fixed beam energy is found to increase linearly with the cube root of the number of participants. From this trend, a lower limit of the pp correlation radius is deduced.

Abstract: International audience; The precise determination of the energy of the Lyman 1 and 2 lines in hydrogen-like heavy ions provides a sensitive test of quantum electrodynamics in very strong Coulomb fields. For the first time, a calorimetric low-temperature detector was applied in an experiment to precisely determine the transition energy of the Lyman lines of lead ions 207pb81+ at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI. The detectors consist of silicon thermistors, provided by the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, and Pb or Sn absorbers to obtain high quantum efficiency in the energy range of 40–80 keV, where the Doppler-shifted Lyman lines are located. The measured energy of the Lyman 1 line, E(Ly-1, 207Pb81+) = (77937±12stat±23syst) eV, agrees within errors with theoretical predictions. The systematic error is mainly due to uncertainties in the non-linear energy calibration of the detectors as well as the relative position of detector and gas-jet target.

Abstract: International audience; We present the ﬁrst observation of the 1s2p 3P2 → 1s2s 3S1 transition in He-like uranium. The experiment was performed at the internal gas-jet target of the ESR storage ring at GSI exploiting a Bragg crystal spectrometer and a germanium solid state detector. Using the 1s2 2p 2P3/2 → 1s2 2s 2S1/2 transition in Li-like uranium as reference and the deceleration capabilities of the ESR storage rings, we obtained the ﬁrst evaluation of the He-like heavy ion intra-shell transition energy.

Abstract: International audience; A twin crystal-spectrometer assembly, operated in the focusing compensated asymmetric Laue geometry has been developed for accurate spectroscopy of fast highly charged heavy ions in the hard-X-ray region. Coupled to the focusing crystal optics is a specially developed two-dimensional position-sensitive X-ray detector which is necessary for retaining spectral resolution also for fast moving sources. We summarize the crystal optics and demonstrate the usefulness of the instrument for spectroscopy of both stationary and fast moving X-ray sources. Results are reported from several tests employing a 169Yb gamma-ray source and the Lyman radiation of one-electron Pb81+ ions traveling at a velocity corresponding to [beta]†[reverse not equivalent]†v/c†[approximate]†0.59. The features of the instrument presented may be useful in many applications where it appears difficult to make the leap from conventional X-ray energy measurements to wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy based on crystal optics.

Abstract: International audience; Results of the latest commissioning experiment of a two arm transmission crystal x-ray spectrometer in combination with a high-performance position-sensitive mircostrip germanium detector are presented. Due to the low photon efficiency of only 10(-8), both the position-sensitivity and the energy-resolution of the 2D-germanium detector are absolutely essential to perform experiments using crystal x-ray spectrometers. In this experiment we were aiming for a precise determination of the Ly-alpha transitions in H-like Ph81+ produced in collisions with a krypton gas jet at the ESR storage ring. Up to now, the most accurate determination of QED corrections to the ground state binding energy in a high-Z, H-like system was performed for H-like uranium with an accuracy on the 1% level.

Abstract: International audience; Theories for electron transfer to the continuum have encountered considerable difficulties to take into account the intrinsic many-electron processes in the capture channel. This may partially be attributed to large momentum transfers involved and thus collision systems are mostly not in the realm of first order perturbation theories. For this reason we have studied collision systems where simultaneously distinct competing electron transfer processes are found to be active, like radiative (RECC) and non-radiative electron capture to continuum (ECC) in the relativistic domain where one or two even active electrons are involved ; here another, though distinct, transfer process, the projectile electron loss to continuum (ELC), permits additionally to study the dynamics of ionization very close to threshold. We have studied these electron transfer processes simultaneously in forward electron emission in two systems of different projectile Compton profile, U88+ + N2 and Sn47+ + N2 collisions using the forward electron spectrometer at the supersonic jet-target of the ESR storage ring. We report first results and compare with theory.

Abstract: The full permanent magnet "supernanogan" type ECR (electron cyclotron resonance) ion source, SIMPA (Source d'Ions Multicharges de Paris) has been jointly operated by LKB (Laboratoire Kastler Brossel) and INSP (Institut des NanoSciences de Paris) since 2004. Since this time numerous projects have been started to use the extracted beam in atomic physics and surface physics experiments and the x-ray radiation of the ECR plasma for plasma and atomic physics investigations. In this paper recent achievements will be reported that include the first use of an electrostatic ion trap * for trapping highly charged ions on the beam line of an ECR ion source and electron temperature and density measurements with the help of the observation of the bremsstrahlung spectrum of the electrons in the ECR plasma of the source.** Also a new vacuum double crystal spectrometer *** is under construction in our lab that will allow us to measure the very narrow inner shell transitions of highly charged ions produced in the ECR plasma and provide new x-ray standards with this method for the atomic physics community.

Abstract: International audience; The precise determination of the Lamb shift in hydrogen-like heavy ions provides a sensitive test of quantum electrodynamics in very strong Coulomb fields, not accessible otherwise. To increase the accuracy of the Lamb shift measurement on stored heavy ions at the ESR storage ring at GSI, a calorimetric low temperature detector for hard X-rays was developed. A prototype array consisting of 8 pixels with silicon thermistors and Sn or Pb absorbers was applied in first experiments with stored U-238(91)+ and Pb-207(81+) ions interacting with an internal gas-jet target. In both experiments the Lyman-alpha lines were, for the first time by using calorimetric low temperature detectors, clearly identified in clean, almost background-free spectra. A total detection efficiency of 1x10(-7) for the Lyman-alpha lines was reached and an energy resolution of 115 eV was obtained under the present experimental conditions, which corresponds to a considerable improvement of about half an order of magnitude if compared to conventional Ge semiconductor detectors. Finally preliminary results of the data analysis and future perspectives are discussed.
