Abstract

International audience, The study of a fractional Burgers equation arising in nonlinear acoustics is presented. The motivation comes from an elementary model of shock waves in brass wind instruments, that proves useful in musical acoustics. Such a model results from the coupling of a conservative nonlinear system with a dissipative term; here the dissipation is represented by a fractional derivative in time, for which equivalent diffusive representations can be efficiently used: in a first part, strong solutions, weak solutions and energy balances are examined. In a second part, ad hoc numerical schemes are derived, in order to capture all the physical phenomena at stake in the original model, and to get rid, as far as possible, of the spurious numerical effects which are highly undesirable: to this end, conservative schemes for hyperbolic conservation laws, diffusive realizations for the fractional derivatives and integrals, and splitting of the two are being used.

Abstract

International audience, In order to characterise the ultimate error regime of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) algorithms, sets of virtual transformed images are often generated from a reference image by in-plane sub-pixel translations. This leads to the determination of the well-known S-shaped systematic error curves and their corresponding random error curves. It is reported in this collaborative work that the a priori choices used to numerically shift images (grey level interpolation, direct or reverse transformation between images) modify DIC results and may lead to biased conclusions in terms of DIC errors.

Abstract

International audience, This paper deals with the pressure dependence of plasticity in metallic glasses below glass transition. Recent results indicate that some metallic glasses have such a dependence and that it increases with temperature (Keryvin et al., Phil. Mag., 88, 1773, 2008). We investigate the possibility that such a situation could be a common feature for all metallic glasses by performing a literature review. Results indicate that it is not straightforward to draw decisive conclusions.

Abstract

International audience; Aeronautical composite primary structures must evidence sufficient residual strength in the presence of damage for compliance with damage tolerance requirements. The study of stiffener debonding on panels subjected to compression after impact is performed in that scope. Compression leads to the buckling of the skin between the stiffeners, and thus a complex loading of the bonding between the skin and the stiffener. This paper describes the development of a stiffened specimen for the VERTEX multiaxial test rig as a first step towards the study of the damage tolerance evaluation of stiffened structures, under combined loadings and at the intermediate scale of the test pyramid. By using virtual testing, the specimen was designed to produce the phenomenology of interest as the first damage, i.e., the debonding of the stiffener from the centre. Three samples were manufactured and subjected to low velocity impacts at various locations and energies. Then the three samples were subjected to compression after impact, up to the stiffener debonding, under a post-buckling regime of the skin. Test loading evolution is described with force fluxes and global strains, obtained from in situ stereo-correlation. The different impacts were found to give different types of damage but similar residual strength to compression after impact.

Abstract

International audience; Nowadays, drones can be developed for a wide range of use cases, from infrastructure monitoring to sea rescue, urban mobility or military purposes. Which drone design is best suited for a specific mission? To answer this question, we need to solve a constrained optimization problem based on a multidisciplinary design model that takes the mission into account. The model generally being a computationally expensive numerical model whose gradients are not available all the time encourages us to consider a Bayesian optimization approach. Such strategy is well known to achieve a trade-off between exploitation and exploration in order to find interesting minimal area with a reduced number of function evaluations. A multi-fidelity approach can improve even more the computational efficiency of the Bayesian optimization strategy. In this work, we aim at designing a fixed-wing drone (fully electric) for long range surveillance mission. Two fidelity level electric drone models are developed. For a given mission requirement, the final battery state of charge is optimized with respect to drone design variables. Optimizations are performed on several missions using both a mono and a multi-fidelity Bayesian optimization strategy. The interest of using a multi-fidelity method for overall drone design has been assessed. The multi-fidelity super-efficient global optimization algorithm (MFSEGO) appeared to need less budget to reach convergence than the mono-fidelity algorithm and to be more robust to the initial design of experiments.

Abstract

International audience; A low-computational-cost method is proposed in this paper to predict steady-state nonlinear aeroelastic response for high-aspect-ratio wings. This fast nonlinear static aeroelasticity method relies on a simple but robust mathematical approach. The work presented in this paper evaluates the accuracy of a nonlinear aerodynamic method on a large range of Mach numbers for a geometry representative of a typical industrial high-aspect-ratio-wing aircraft. The robustness of the method relies on the accurate estimation of the local pressure field based on an aerodynamic database using a local incidence estimated with a vortex lattice method. The database can be filled with flight test, wind tunnel test, or high-fidelity numerical simulation. The structural deformation is provided by a coupled aeroelastic high-fidelity numerical simulation, and so this paper focuses mainly on the development and validation of the aerodynamic model. Then, the flexible coefficients of the wing are compared to the high-fidelity aeroelastic numerical simulations for a set of Mach numbers ranging from subsonic to transonic conditions. The results presented in this paper show that the present method is very accurate for low-Mach-number regimes (error is lower than 1% on lift), and it is also adapted to transonic flow regimes because the error on lift is lower than 5%. For high Mach numbers, the current solution commits larger errors on drag and pitching moment coefficients.

Abstract

International audience; Bell's inequality violation experiments are becoming increasingly popular in the practical teaching of undergraduate and master's degree students. Bell's parameter S is obtained from 16 polarization correlation measurements performed on entangled photons pairs. We first report here a detailed analysis of the uncertainty u(S) of Bell's parameter taking into account coincidence count statistics and errors in polarizers' orientation. We show using both computational modeling and experimental measurement that the actual sequence of the polarizer settings has an unexpected and strong influence on the error budget. This result may also be relevant to measurements in other settings in which errors in parameters may have non-random effects in the measurement.

Abstract

International audience; The development of the aeronautical industry has brought about certain demands like the reduction of fuel consumption and, consequently, the weight of used structures. Therefore, topology analysis of aircraft components has played an important role in meeting these demands. Another factor widely studied in this context is the type of materials used in the manufacture of such components, hence, by presenting lower densities, composites have gained ground in this industry sector.Besides, an increasingly sought-after characteristic is the sustainability associated with the entire life cycle of any system or part, from its design, through the production phase, to its end of life. The assessment of such sustainability is often carried out by analysing the life cycle’s CO2 footprint, which tends to decrease when the raw materials used are less processed. Materials of natural origin, also known as "bio-materials", have therefore been the target of study, being the basis of the concept of eco-design. The accelerated development of 3D printing technologies has allowed the evolution of structural design methods. Additive manufacturing emerged in the 1980s and has since been expanding in the aerospace field. One of its great advantages is that it can be combined with the use of bio-composites, such as flax or hemp.The topology optimisation of any given structure brings great benefits in terms of the mitigation of the CO2 impact of a given part, as it translates into a reduction of its mass and fuel consumption. However, the combination of this method with the optimisation of the fibre path, in the 3D printing process, and the CO2 footprint of the part’s life cycle simultaneously can bring even more evident benefits. In this paper modifications to existing methods are proposed. In MATLAB, strategies are developed to study the topology and fibre orientation of potentially 3D printed thin structures.

Abstract

International audience; Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is the widely used technology when it comes to outdoor positioning. But it has severe limitations with regard to safety-critical applications involving unmanned autonomous systems. Namely, the positioning performance degrades in harsh propagation environment such as urban canyons. In this letter we propose a new algorithm for GNSS navigation in challenging environments based on robust statistics. M-estimators showed promising results in this context, but are limited by some fixed hyper-parameters. Our main idea is to adapt this parameter, for the Huber cost function, to the current environment in a data-driven manner. Doing so, we also present a simple yet efficient way of learning with satellite data, whose number may vary over time. Focusing the learning problem on a single parameter enables to efficiently learn with a lightweight neural network. The generalization capability and the positioning performance of the proposed method are evaluated in multiple contexts scenarios (open-sky, trees, urban and urban canyon), with two distinct GNSS receivers, and in an airplane ground inspection scenario. The maximum positioning error is reduced by up to 68% with respect to M-estimators.

International audience; In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles applications have grown in various fields. New design configurations have emerged to address these needs. This paper focuses on the multidisciplinary design optimization of three popular concepts of drones under a common framework: multicopters, fixed-wings, and the more recent fixed-wing VTOLs. Low-fidelity but computationally efficient models for drone sizing are proposed, some of them being shared by the different concepts. The models are integrated with a design optimization approach, and an efficient sizing methodology allows for reducing the problem complexity. This approach is instrumental because of the large number of design variables and constraints involved in the multidisciplinary design process. Examples of sizing results are provided to validate the methodology for fixed wing UAVs. In addition, a study case demonstrates the benefit of a common framework for comparing the performances of different drone concepts. A key finding is that the VTOL propulsion of the fixed-wing VTOLs must be carefully optimized to avoid an undesirable mass penalty.

Abstract

International audience; Piezoelectric materials are employed in several different aerospace applications thanks to their actuating and sensing abilities. They can be adopted to control vibration, stress distribution, aeroelastic stability, shape changes, and in structural health monitoring systems. Given the level of reliability required in aeronautics, it is of vital importance to ensure their correct functioning during all aircraft life and for critical events such as impacts. This paper proposes a novel test standard method to measure and qualify the damage resistance of smart PZT structures to a drop-weight impact event. Procedures for the quantification of damage through measurements of electromechanical characteristics are introduced and verified by impact tests.

Abstract

International audience; Increasing the aspect ratio of transonic aircraft wings represent a promising path to allow aviation to reduce its carbon footprint. The objective of this study is to develop sufficiently accurate aero-structural models in order to fully exploit High Aspect Ratio (HAR) wings drag reduction and performance improvements potential at preliminary design stage. The use of a multifidelity approach makes it possible to reduce computational costs by mainly resorting to low-fidelity computations and only running high-fidelity computations when necessary. The first step is to develop high and low fidelity models to perform static aeroelastic analysis on the NASA CRM wing. These models will be used as a baseline to be compared with other configurations of interest. Afterwards, models are developed for a modified version of the CRM wing with a higher aspect ratio, and static aeroelastic analysis are carried out. Finally, a Strut-Braced Wing (SBW) configuration is studied to evaluate its mass reduction potential, in addition to the drag reduction provided by the increased aspect ratio. These aero-structural models are implemented within an in-house aeroelastic analysis and optimization framework. This works focuses on aeroelastic analysis for now, but is to be extended to aeroelastic optimization, using a multifidelity approach.

Abstract

International audience; Bayesian optimization is an advanced tool to perform efficient global optimization. It consists on enriching iteratively surrogate Kriging models of the objective and the constraints (both supposed to be computationally expensive) of the targeted optimization problem. Nowadays, efficient extensions of Bayesian optimization to solve expensive multi-objective problems are of high interest. The proposed method, in this paper, extends the super efficient global optimization with mixture of experts (SEGOMOE) to solve constrained multi-objective problems. To cope with the ill-posedness of the multi-objective infill criteria, different enrichment procedures using regularization techniques are proposed. The merit of the proposed approaches are shown on known multi-objective benchmark problems with and without constraints. The proposed methods are then used to solve a bi-objective application related to conceptual aircraft design with five unknown design variables and three nonlinear inequality constraints. The preliminary results show a reduction of the total cost in terms of function evaluations by a factor of 20 compared to the evolutionary algorithm NSGA-II.

Abstract

In recent decades, designers in aeronautics have been specifically interested in the interaction between the various experts involved in the modeling of the performance of aircraft. These experts use so-called disciplinary numerical solvers to model their discipline (for example aerodynamic, structure or propulsion) and exchange information to take into account the influence of other disciplines. The system coupled by this information is called multidisciplinary analysis (MDA). The search of the best design, called multidisciplinary optimization, consists in identifying the design variables optimizing a performance function derived fromthe MDA solution. Solving this optimization problem raises several challenges. First, the evaluation of each disciplinary solver is numerically expensive andminimizing the calls to these solvers through the optimization represents one of the main objectives of the thesis. Secondly, it is assumed that the data exchanged by the disciplinary solvers is of high dimensionality (typically discretized fieldwhose dimension exceeds 1000). Finally, the resolution method must be as generic as possible : non-intrusive in order to use industrial disciplinary solvers and adaptable to MDA involving various number of disciplines. Several formulations have been proposed for the resolution of this type of problem, but none of them can fully overcome these challenges. One of the most promising ideas is to replace each disciplinary solver by Gaussian processes (GP) and couple these surrogate models to approximate the MDA. The idea is then to use the variance of the GP to estimate the uncertainties on the MDA and to enrich the GP if necessary. However, this method cannot be applied when the dimension of the exchanged information is too high. Another way of reducing the numerical cost is based on model order reduction methods by projection. To do so, the outputs of the models are projected onto a reduced basis of lower dimension. One of the limitations of this approximation is the evaluation of the error made by the projection. The objective of the thesis is the coupling of GP and model order reduction to propose a method for solving a multidisciplinary optimization problem overcoming the proposed challenges. To this end, the idea is to replace each disciplinary solver by an approximation combining projection and interpolation by GP. However, in order to certify that the approximation is accurate, the error made shall be estimated in order to refine the approximation if needed. A first part of our work consists in using the Petrov-Galerkin projection as a model order reduction technique and estimating the projection error by statistical analysis and preconditioning. An application is proposed on the optimization of a quantity of interest using Bayesian optimization. More precisely, the error is estimated to determine if the approximated solution shall be used instead of the exact solution. This coupling is tested on the preliminary design of an aircraft wing and shows a strong potential for reducing computational cost. Secondly, we use GP to interpolate the coefficients on the reduced basis and estimate the error made using the variance of the GP. A training method for the construction of the reduced basis and the GP is proposed in the context of multidisciplinary analysis. The errors caused by the approximation of each solver are then propagated to obtain an estimate of the error on the MDA. An MDA solver is proposed by enrichment of the disciplinary GP and reduced basis until the uncertainties caused by the interpolation are considered sufficiently low. This algorithm was tested in an aeroelastic context modeling an airplane wing. Subsequently, several couplings with multidisciplinary optimization algorithms showed the interest of the method by greatly lowering the optimization budget.; Ces dernières décennies, les concepteurs avant-projet en aéronautique ont porté un intérêt particulier sur l’interaction entre les différents experts impliqués dans la modélisation des performances d’un avion. Ces experts utilisent des codes de simulation numériques dits disciplinaires pour modéliser leur discipline (par exemple l’aérodynamique, la structure ou la propulsion) et échangent des informations afin de prendre en compte l’influence des autres disciplines sur la leur. Le système couplé via ces informations est nommé analyse multidisciplinaire (MDA). La recherche de la meilleure configuration, nommée optimisation multidisciplinaire, consiste à identifier les variables de conception optimisant une fonction de performance calculée à partir de la solution de la MDA. La résolution de ce problème d’optimisation soulève plusieurs défis. Premièrement, l’évaluation de chaque modèle disciplinaire est coûteuse et minimiser les appels à ces solveurs lors de l’optimisation représente un des principaux objectifs de la thèse. Deuxièmement, nous considérons que les informations échangées entre les solveurs disciplinaires sont de grande dimension (typiquement des champs discrétisés dont la dimension excède 1000). Finalement, la méthode de résolution doit être la plus générique possible : non intrusive afin de pouvoir utiliser des solveurs disciplinaires industriels et pouvant s’adapter à des MDA faisant intervenir un nombre variable de disciplines impliquées dans le processus de conception. Plusieurs formulations ont été proposées pour la résolution de ce type de problème mais aucune ne permet de relever entièrement ces défis. Une des propositions les plus prometteuses est de remplacer chacun des solveurs disciplinaires par des processus gaussiens (GP) et de coupler ces solveurs approchés pour obtenir une approximation de la MDA. L’idée est alors d’utiliser la variance des GP pour estimer les incertitudes sur la MDA et d’enrichir les GP lorsque cela s’avère nécessaire. Cependant, cette méthode ne peut être appliquée lorsque les informations échangées sont de grande dimension. Une autre voie de réduction du coût numérique est basée sur les méthodes de réduction d’ordre de modèle par projection. Pour cela, les sorties des modèles sont projetées sur une base réduite de faible dimension. Une des limitations de cette approximation est l’évaluation de l’erreur commise par la projection. L’objectif de la thèse est alors de coupler GP et réduction d’ordre de modèle afin de proposer une méthode de résolution d’un problème d’optimisation multidisciplinaire permettant de relever les défis proposés. Pour cela, l’idée est de remplacer chaque solveur disciplinaire par une approximation combinant projection et interpolation par GP. Cependant, afin de certifier que l’approximation est fidèle, l’erreur commise devra être estimée afin d’affiner l’approximation si celle-ci est trop importante. Une première partie de nos travaux consiste à utiliser la projection de Petrov-Galerkin comme technique de réduction d’ordre de modèle et d’estimer l’erreur de projection par analyse statistique et préconditionnement. Une application est proposée sur l’optimisation d’une quantité d’intérêt via un couplage avec un algorithme bayésien. Plus précisément, l’estimation de l’erreur est utilisée pour déterminer si la solution réduite peut être utilisée à la place de la solution exacte. Ce couplage testé sur le dimensionnement d’une aile d’avion montre un fort potentiel de réduction des temps de calcul. Dans un second temps, nous avons utilisé les GP pour interpoler les coefficients de la base réduite et estimé l’erreur d’approximation grâce à la variance des GP. Une méthode d’entraînement spécifique au contexte multidisciplinaire est proposée pour la construction des bases réduites et des GP. Les erreurs induites par l’approximation de chaque solveur sont alors propagées afin d’obtenir une estimation de l’erreur sur la MDA. Un algorithme de résolution de MDA est proposé par enrichissement des GP disciplinaires et des bases réduites jusqu’à ce que les incertitudes liées à l’interpolation soient considérées comme suffisamment faibles. Cet algorithme a été testé dans un contexte aéroélastique modélisant une aile d’avion. Par la suite, plusieurs couplages avec des algorithmes de résolution d’optimisation multidisciplinaire ont montré l’intérêt de la méthode en permettant de fortement réduire le budget de l’optimisation.

Abstract

International audience; Aeroelasticity plays an important role in the design and certification of aircrafts. Whether steady aerodynamics is key for static methods, unsteady phenomenon is key for dynamic approaches. Nevertheless, in both aeroelastic problematics, it is basically aerodynamics who monopolizes the CPU cost. Thus, fast methods are interesting as alternative to the high cost of CFDCSM simulations.The aim of this study is to present an unsteady method that predicts the aerodynamics of aircrafts encountering a wind gust. First of all, the process that brought to the formulation of the static aeroelasticity from Wind Tunnel Tests (WTT) is refreshed. It is a rapid and robust method based on the principle of the local incidence shift due to flexible effects. This difference in the angle of attack is used to interpolate the pressure coefficient from aerodynamics lookup tables.Secondly, the static method (called Fast Nonlinear Static Aeroelasticity –FNSA–) is validated when analyzing a high aspect ratio wing which assures a flexible structure. The method deals with nonlinear, flexible and compressible effects in steady aerodynamics.Finally, an algorithm is proposed to integrate the FNSA formulation to the unsteady problem of gust load computation. The methodology uses a quasi-steady approach of the static solver together with Wagner delay function modeling the unsteadiness of the flow. Restricting our aeroelastic equation of motion to a simple mass-stiffness system, the airstream directed downward due to the gust is added to the downwash of each section. The formulation allows, then, a reaction to the gust at each time step that yields to flexible results with an accuracy comparable to the Unsteady Vortex Lattice Method but around 3600 times faster.

International audience; Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) relies on the availability of large amounts of data for a given system and allows to analyse this data and to draw conclusions as to the health state of the system, the identification of faults and failures, as well as the calculation of the remaining useful life time. Often, it is expected that this data is labelled, i.e. that the data has been pre-analysed and that for each data point an exact information is available as to what it is about, when it was measured, etc. In reality, this is not always easy and this labeled data is not always available. For example, on aerospace structures, complete labeled data until the end of their lifetime are not usually available. This may hamper for example the use of Deep Learning (DL) techniques for Predictive Maintenance, as they rely on the availability of large amounts of labeled sensor data. In this paper a framework and associated code r is proposed to generate high dimensional data sets for a realistic fatigue damage prognostics problem, representative of fatigue cracks propagation in aeronautical fuselage panels. With this data, DL techniques can be trained, and we will illustrate this with a case study involving several of the most commonly used DL models to address failure prognostics.

International audience; In the beginning of 2022, the world is still fighting the crisis caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. The scientific community is still dedicating significant efforts to identify which are the better strategies to mitigate the pandemic and establish how and when to apply them. Modeling and simulation are a common method to replicate and foresee the behavior of the epidemic curve, but traditional analytical models are not capable to explain and reproduce the real evolution of the number of infections and deaths as they only concentrate in the epidemiological aspects of the virus. The COVID-19 crisis has an impact in all fundamental levels of society, and this is the reason why its modeling requires a global perspective and a holistic approach. Though the engineering scope is not common in the study of public health crises, this paper concludes that some engineering tools such as systems analysis and control theory may be the answer to build a high-fidelity model to support the decision-making facing the emergency.

Abstract

National audience; The problem of Topology Optimization aims to solve the question of the optimal material distribution subjected to known boundary and load conditions subject to a target volume fraction. In this study, we present a machine learning framework to tackle the problem of Multi Material Topology upscaling, i.e., the prediction of a higher resolution topology with just the low- resolution input. A Convolutional Deep Neural network was trained with a data set generated from an iterative code found in the existing literature. The network architecture implemented in this study is a modified version of SRGAN which has proven capabilities in upscaling complex real-world images. In this study, the perceptual loss function was used as the loss function in order to not penalize the network for its predictions that are off by a couple of pixels while simultaneously rewarding the network for its outputs that yield accurate compliance. The paper aims to present a novel approach to the problem of Topology Upscaling of 2x by mapping local features of the low-resolution topology to their higher resolution counterparts.

Abstract

As is the case in several research domains, data sharing is still scarce in the field of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI), and particularly in that of passive BCIs—i.e., systems that enable implicit interaction or task adaptation based on a user's mental state(s) estimated from brain measures. Moreover, research in this field is currently hindered by a major challenge, which is tackling brain signal variability such as cross-session variability. Hence, with a view to develop good research practices in this field and to enable the whole community to join forces in working on cross-session estimation, we created the first passive brain-computer interface competition on cross-session workload estimation. This competition was part of the 3rd International Neuroergonomics conference. The data were electroencephalographic recordings acquired from 15 volunteers (6 females; average 25 y.o.) who performed 3 sessions—separated by 7 days—of the Multi-Attribute Task Battery-II (MATB-II) with 3 levels of difficulty per session (pseudo-randomized order). The data -training and testing sets—were made publicly available on Zenodo along with Matlab and Python toy code (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5055046). To this day, the database was downloaded more than 900 times (unique downloads of all version on the 10th of December 2021: 911). Eleven teams from 3 continents (31 participants) submitted their work. The best achieving processing pipelines included a Riemannian geometry-based method. Although better than the adjusted chance level (38% with an α at 0.05 for a 3-class classification problem), the results still remained under 60% of accuracy. These results clearly underline the real challenge that is cross-session estimation. Moreover, they confirmed once more the robustness and effectiveness of Riemannian methods for BCI. On the contrary, chance level results were obtained by one third of the methods—4 teams- based on Deep Learning. These methods have not demonstrated superior results in this contest compared to traditional methods, which may be due to severe overfitting. Yet this competition is the first step toward a joint effort to tackle BCI variability and to promote good research practices including reproducibility.

International audience; This work mainly concentrates on the optimization of cubic and bistable NES to find the maximum efficiency point under harmonic excitation. The conservative system is considered to reveal the inner property of the damping system. With the application of the multiple scales method and the complex variables method, the threshold of excitation and different response regimes are distinguished under the assumption of 1:1 resonance. The maximum efficiency point of cubic and bistable NES occurs when SMR disappears. The factors that affect the optimal efficiency limit are explored. The result indicates that the maximum absorption efficiency level is mainly determined by the damping parameters. Compared with the cubic case, the bistable case involves more complex regimes in terms of chaos oscillation. The influence of damping parameters on the chaos threshold is discussed to adopt different energy levels. With the help of analytical predictions, the proper nonlinear stiffness is determined for certain harmonic excitation. This work offers some fundamental insights into the optimal design of cubic and bistable NES.

International audience; This article proposes a new method for the resolution of parametrized multidisciplinary analysis (MDA) using disciplinary surrogate models within a multi-query context. The main idea is to replace the costly disciplinary solvers of the MDA by Proper Orthogonal Decomposition and Interpolation models. The main challenge we address is the high dimensional coupling variables whose ranges are unknown. To overcome this issue, a training strategy is developed by uncoupling the disciplinary solvers from the MDA context. This new surrogate MDA called Disciplinary Proper Orthogonal Decomposition and Interpolation (DPOD+I) is iteratively enriched to solve the analysis with an estimation of the error made by the surrogate model. The disciplinary surrogate model which has the most influence on this error is determined by a sensitivity analysis and thus enriched. This approach allows to uncouple the disciplinary solvers during the training and enrichment phases. The approach is applied to various aeroelastic problems of an aircraft wing and allows to reduce by a factor 5 the mean number of disciplinary solver calls needed for the resolution of the MDA.

International audience; The equivalent fluid model (EFM) describes the acoustic properties of rigid porous media by defining the intra-pore fluid phase as a fluid with an effective density and an effective compressibility. Their definitions are based on the dynamic tortuosity α and the normalized dynamic compressibility β. These physical quantities are complex-valued functions depending on the frequency, and can be irrational as in the Johnson-Champoux-Allard-Pride-Lafarge (JCAPL) model. Hence, the system of equations derived from the EFM can involve fractional derivatives in the time domain. This paper presents an approach to formulate the EFM equations described by the JCAPL model in the time domain, leading to an augmented system for which a proof of stability is given. From the EFM, a model for numerical simulation is built with α and β approximated using a multipole model. Sufficient stability conditions are then provided for the multipole-based EFM. Lastly, a numerical analysis is carried out in order to illustrate the theoretical results and a simulation of the impedance tube experiment is presented.

Abstract

International audience; In the present work, a specific three-point bending test is applied to evaluate how the roughness can impact the bond strength (adherence) and the mechanism of interfacial failure initiation. The study is conducted using an aluminum alloy 2024-T3 as substrate and the DGEBA (polyepoxide bisphenol A diglycidyl ether) /DETA (diethylenetriamine) as adhesive, considering different abrasive surface treatments. An optimal roughness is reached to maximize the critical force during failure initiation; besides, the roughness impacted the failure propagation mechanism and the failure initiation area for each abrasive treatment. A power-law regression is considered to correlate the critical force and the failure initiation area, considering different average roughness. Local assessment using a mechanical profilometer and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with Focused Ion Beam (FIB) are applied to measure the residual adhesive thickness at failure initiation and failure propagation zones as well as the initiation-to-propagation transitions. It is constated that the residual adhesive thickness is dependent on the average roughness of the substrate. Finally, Weibull’s analysis is undertaken to demonstrate that the mechanism of failure initiation for all substrate groups is essentially the same, although the failure propagation mechanism can be different.

Abstract

International audience; Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites exhibit high stiffness, chemical stability, and heat resistance and they are therefore employed in applications under severe operating environments. This work aims to provide insight into the effect of the size, concentration, and type of fillers on the thermal and mechanical properties of PEEK. A total of 32 composites are used to highlight the influence of nature (lamellae, such as boron nitride and graphite and silicon carbide and alumina), size (nano and micrometric), and content (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 vol%) of fillers. The melting temperature and lamellar thickness did not change regardless of the nature of the filler. The thermomechanical analysis demonstrates that lamellar fillers form a percolating network and contribute significantly to the enhancement of the storage modulus. The increase in the storage modulus is proportional to the filler content, and it is more pronounced for micro composites. As expected, the percolating network is formed at lower concentrations for lamellar fillers than for spherical ones. The highest conductivity is achieved with graphite at 0.823 W m−1 K−1, which is twice that of PEEK for 10 vol%. Moreover, the use of micrometric fillers results in thermal conductivity enhancement attributed to the higher amount of efficient hot zones for heat transfer.

Abstract

International audience; This paper aims at defining the key mechanical properties of atmospheric ice in order to improve the design ofmechanical de-icing systems. Based on ice fracture mechanisms, the parameters of interest are the cohesivestrength of the ice and its fracture toughness. A hybrid experimental/numerical vibrating method is used tomeasure those critical values. Parameters such as temperature and precipitation rate influence the ice densityand ice samples are thus defined with respect to this parameter. First, the cohesive strength of ice is measuredover the entire range of ice density and a polynomial expression of the cohesive strength of ice is given as afunction of this density. Then the fracture toughness is measured for a smaller range of density and an averagecritical value is given. Finally, the influence of the properties computed is discussed to assess the conditions ofatmospheric ice mechanical removal and the challenges for the design of mechanical ice protection systems. Thestudy tends to show that as its density decreases, ice is more difficult to remove mechanically.

Abstract

International audience; Variabilities in polyamide 6 (PA6) composite manufacturing by liquid processes can occur due to polymerization, crystallization, and flow through a fibrous preform. Numerical simulations of the process predicting the kinetics can facilitate manufacturing optimization. This study proposes an efficient modeling approach that can be integrated in current simulation discretization methods such as the finite volume method (FVM) while considering the interaction between PA6 polymerization and crystallization. Using polymerization and crystallization models issued from the literature, a previous study determined Hillier coupling method to be able to predict PA6 kinetics. A simpler and more efficient coupling will be introduced and adapted to account for process variability. It was integrated into an FVM framework for process simulation of injection showcasing the capabilities of the model to predict potential crystallization discrepancies.

Abstract

An experimental investigation on the flow topology over a rotor operating atlow Reynolds numbers is presented. The feasibility of laminar to turbulenttransition experiments over small rotors is demonstrated. Phase-locked infraredthermography coupled with simultaneous force and torque measurements wereused to study a three bladed rotor with a NACA0012 aerofoil section set at auniform angle of incidence of 10◦. Boundary layer transition was forced usingtwo-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) roughness elements, placedat approximately 5% and 28% of the rotor blades chord. In the 3D roughnessconfigurations once the critical roughness Reynolds was attained the streaksdownstream developed into fully turbulent wedges. For the current rotor con-figuration, it was found that the state of the boundary layer can significantlyaffect its performance, with the non-optimal forcing of laminar to turbulenttransition generally resulting in a loss of performance when compared to thesmooth reference rotor case.Keywords:Infrared Thermography; Boundary layer transition; Low Reynoldsnumber; rotor

Abstract

International audience; The continuous growth in the manufacture of aerospace components such as blisks has led to an increase in the application of different hybrid materials fabricating methods, and thus the requirements for joining and strengthening of dissimilar welds. According to this goal, selective laser melted (SLM) Inconel 718 was joined with forged AD730TM Nickel-based superalloy through linear friction welding (LFW) in this study. Microstructure variation, specifically with respect to secondary phases precipitation was investigated. The microhardness and strengthening mechanisms of the weldment were also studied. The precipitation (volume fraction and size of particles) at different regions of both sides of the weld line was characterized. Close to the weld line, the dissolution of γ'/γ" and Laves phases and grain refinement occurred which reveals the effects of both compression strain and high temperature on recrystallization and high degree of elemental diffusion in the weld zone (WZ). It is shown that the size, volume fraction, and shape of secondary phases increased and changed (from spherical to long-striped for Laves particles) as we went from the WZ toward the base metal. However, the measured microhardness indicated that the strength of AD730TM alloy depends significantly on the grain size, while strength in SLM Inconel 718 was dominated by shape (or size) and the presence of secondary phases (γ'/γ" and Laves).

Abstract

International audience; Due to the small number of raw data automotive radar datasets and the low resolution of such radar sensors, automotive radar object detection has been little explored with deep learning models in comparison to camera and lidarbased approaches. However, radars are low-cost sensors able to accurately sense surrounding object characteristics (e.g., distance, radial velocity, direction of arrival, radar crosssection) regardless of weather conditions (e.g., rain, snow, fog). Recent open-source datasets such as CARRADA, RADDet or CRUW have opened up research on several topics ranging from object classification to object detection and segmentation. In this paper, we present DAROD, an adaptation of Faster R-CNN object detector for automotive radar on the range-Doppler spectra. We propose a light architecture for features extraction, which shows an increased performance compare to heavier vision-based backbone architectures. Our models reach respectively an mAP@0.5 of 55.83 and 46.57 on CARRADA and RADDet datasets, outperforming competing methods.

Abstract

Ground vehicle protections against ballistic impacts have long been the result of an incremental evolution based on empirical approaches. A design based on a numerical optimisation reduces the number of tests and associated costs while freely varying materials, threats and constraints (environmental for example). An experiment-simulation correlation methodology linking a finite element code to an optimisation module is proposed. The methodology consists of three steps: (i) the calibration and verification of a numerical model (to be taken in a broad sense), (ii) the validation of the model and (iii) the search for an optimal configuration of the protection, in this case a multimaterial system. An extensive ballistic testing campaign has been conducted using the ICA’s impact platform STIMPACT and a firearms proofing facility to investigate the response of typical ballistic protections (based on steel and alloys plates, ceramic tiles, reinforced polymer panels) by varying the type of projectile (material, geometry), the impact velocity (from 100 to 830 m/s) and the structure of multimaterial systems. Quantitative information has been obtained in terms of ballistic limit velocity (VBL) and residual velocity vs. incident velocity curves, and qualitative information in terms of failure modes of the various components constituting the protection. These tests made it possible to identify trends and to feed the database used for the experiment-simulation correlation part. The numerical simulations have been performed using the commercial finite element code Abaqus/Explicit. The behaviour of the different materials is described by specific engineer models that take into account the effects of strain and strain rate, damage and temperature, and whose constants are, depending on the case, taken from the literature or determined at the calibration/verification step on simple to moderately complex configurations. Once validated on complex configurations, the model is integrated into an optimisation loop via the ISIGHT module to determine an optimal set of design parameters that minimises the mass of a multimaterials system while ensuring its ballistic protection function. The comparison of first numerical optimisations with realistic experiments is encouraging regarding the predictive capacity of the model.; Les protections de véhicules terrestres contre les impacts balistiques ont longtemps été issues d’une évolution incrémentale basée sur des approches empiriques. Une conception basée sur une optimisation numérique permet de réduire le nombre des essais et les coûts afférents tout en faisant varier librement les matériaux, menaces et contraintes (environnementales par exemple). Une méthodologie de corrélation expérience-simulation couplant un code de calcul par éléments finis à un module d’optimisation est ainsi proposée. La méthodologie en question inclut trois étapes : (i) la calibration et la vérification d’un modèle numérique (à prendre au sens large), (ii) la validation du modèle, et (iii) la recherche d'une configuration optimale de protection, en l'occurrence ici un empilement multimatériaux.Une importante campagne de tirs balistiques a été conduite au moyen de la plateforme d’impact STIMPACT de l’ICA et d’un banc d’épreuve pour étudier la réponse de protections balistiques types (à base de plaques en acier et alliages, de carreaux de céramiques, de panneaux de polymères renforcés) en faisant notamment varier le type de projectile (matériau, géométrie), la vitesse d’impact (de 100 à 830 m/s), et la structure d’empilements multimatériaux. Des informations quantitatives ont été obtenues en termes de vitesses limites de protection (VLP) et de courbes vitesse résiduelle en fonction de la vitesse incidente, et des informations qualitatives en termes de modes de ruine des différents éléments constituant la protection. Ces essais ont permis de tirer des tendances et d'alimenter la base de données utilisée pour la partie corrélation expérience-simulation. Les simulations numériques ont été menées au moyen du code commercial de calcul par éléments finis Abaqus/Explicit. Le comportement des différents matériaux est décrit par des modèles spécifiques ingénieurs rendant compte des effets de la déformation et de la vitesse de déformation, de l'endommagement et de la température, et dont les constantes sont selon le cas issues de la littérature ou déterminées dans l'étape de calibration/vérification conduite sur des configurations simples à modérément complexes. Une fois validé sur des configurations complexes, le modèle est intégré dans une boucle d’optimisation via le module ISIGHT afin de déterminer un jeu de paramètres de conception optimal qui minimise la masse d’un empilement multimatériaux tout en assurant sa fonction de protection balistique. La comparaison des premières optimisations numériques à des essais réels est encourageante quant à la capacité prédictive du modèle.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, a cross-shaped dielectric resonator antenna arranged in a stacked configuration is proposed to realize a Huygens source in circular polarization at 2.45 GHz ISM band. The antenna principle relies on the combination of two pairs of orthogonal electric and magnetic dipoles. The antenna is designed and optimized with numerical analysis using far-field simulations in Ansys HFSS. It finally has a radiation pattern oriented in one half-space without the use of a ground plane.

Abstract

This paper examines the oxidation behavior of thin specimens of cast NiCoCrAlY alloys at 1150 $$^\circ {\rm C}$$ through successive stages, from $${\rm Al}_2{\rm O}_3$$ growth to complete alloy conversion to oxide. Five alloy compositions were used, with varying fractions and compositions of $$\gamma$$ and $$\beta$$ . The time evolution of the alloy composition during $${\rm Al}_2{\rm O}_3$$ growth was simulated using the DICTRA module of Thermo-Calc and calculated analytically in the approximation of flat profiles. Simulated and experimental profiles were found to be in good agreement, indicating that the phase equilibrium and mass balance were correctly reproduced in the simulations. Local variations of alloy composition were observed in thinner specimens and found to be comparable with the variations expected from the uncertainty on the initial specimen thickness. The variations observed in the time-to- $${\rm Al}_2{\rm O}_3$$ failure were greater than expected on this basis, suggesting that additional sources of variability were in effect. Alumina failure was followed by the growth of a $${\rm Cr}_2{\rm O}_3$$ layer at the alloy–scale interface. Similarly, Cr consumption eventually led to $${\rm Cr}_2{\rm O}_3$$ failure, and Ni- and Co-containing spinel oxide formed, converting the $${\rm Cr}_2{\rm O}_3$$ at the alloy–scale interface and the $${\rm Al}_2{\rm O}_3$$ at the scale–gas interface. The remaining NiCo alloy was then converted to (Ni,Co)O. This sequence occurred without abrupt increase in the mass gain, due to the continued presence of the remnant $${\rm Al}_2{\rm O}_3$$ layer, and to the small amount of metal left to oxidize when the (Ni,Co)O eventually broke through the scale. The evolution of the scale composition throughout the oxidation stages is discussed based on an analysis of the thermodynamic conditions at the alloy–scale interface.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents the broadband noise analysis of a Counter Rotating Open Rotor (CROR) configuration. The numerical study is based on a hybrid approach: a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) code solves the near-flow field of the CROR configuration and the near-to-far-field propagation is then predicted by a Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings analogy either based on a solid or porous formulation. The LES solver uses a phase-lagged assumption with a proper orthogonal decomposition for the data storage. The numerical approach is validated against wind tunnel experimental data of a CROR configuration (AI-PX7) at three different operating points focused on the broadband noise. The analysis of the numerical simulations shows the predominant effect of the rear rotor suction side on the radiated broadband noise with an increasing contribution with span location. This source is related to the impingement of front rotor wakes and the development of leading edge vortices that induce large pressure fluctuations close to the leading edge on the suction side.

Abstract

International audience; Abstract. In aeronautics, the first design stages usually involve to solve a constrained multi-disciplinaryoptimization problem. The Bayesian optimization strategy is a way to solve such a complex system. Thisapproach requires to evaluate the objective function and the constraints quite a few times. Evaluationsare generally performed using numerical models that can be computationally expensive. To alleviate theoverall optimization cost variable information sources can be used to make the evaluations. Typicallywe are dealing with cheap low fidelity models to explore the design space and expensive high fidelitymodels for exploitation. In the following work, a mono-fidelity Bayesian optimization method and itsmulti-fidelity counterpart are compared on two analytical test cases and on an aerostructural dronedesign constrained optimization problem. The multi-fidelity strategy allows to divide the computationalcost by 1.3 compared to the mono-fidelity one on these test cases

Abstract

International audience; A novel approach for numerically propagating acoustic waves in two-dimensional quiescent media has been developed through a fully convolutional multi-scale neural network following a spatio-temporal auto- regressive strategy. This data-driven method managed to produce accurate results for long simulation times with a database of Lattice Boltzmann temporal simulations of propagating Gaussian Pulses, even in the case of initial conditions unseen during training time, such as the plane wave configuration or the two initial Gaussian pulses of opposed amplitudes. Two different choices of optimization objectives are compared, resulting in an improved prediction accuracy when adding the spatial gradient difference error to the traditional mean squared error loss function. Further accuracy gains are observed when performing an a posteriori correction on the neural network prediction based on the conservation of acoustic energy, indicating the benefit of including physical information in data-driven methods. Finally, the method is shown to be capable of relaxing the classical time-step constraint of LBM and to provide parallel properties suitable for accelerating significantly acoustic propagation simulations.

Abstract

International audience; Given the today genuine digital revolution experienced in experimental mechanics, it appears possible to identify numerous mechanical parameters using a limited number of tests provided that the latter are finely optimized. In this context, we design a full numerical methodology for the shape optimization of the specimen with respect to identification ability. It is based on an adequate modeling of the optimization problem and on an advanced numerical resolution procedure using splines and the Free-Form Deformation concept. It results in a non-invasive CAD-based shape optimization procedure that allows to decrease the uncertainty on the identified constitutive parameters by a factor of 30.

International audience; One of the experimental tools that could contribute to a better understanding of the mechanical behavior of cellular materials is the full-field measurements using Digital Volume correlation (DVC). When dealing with micro-structures that do not exhibit sufficient gray-levels, traditional Digital Image Correlation (DIC) algorithms do not allow to measure accurate local deformations. In this critical situation, one of the efficient methods for reducing measurement uncertainties especially in DVC is the use of a mechanical regularization of the underlying optimization problem. Following this approach, we construct an automated fairly-priced image based mechanical model that accurately describes the behavior of a cellular material and use it as a regularization of the DIC problem.

International audience; Systems engineering, or engineering in general, has long been relying on document-centric approaches. Switching to model-based systems engineering, or MBSE for short, has extensively been discussed over the past three decades. Since about two decades, MBSE has been commonly associated with the modeling language SysML (Systems Modeling Language), which offers a standardized notation, not a methodology of using it. SysML needs therefore to be associated with a methodology supported by tools. In this paper, a methodology supported by the free and open-source software TTool is associated with SysML. This paper focuses discussion on methodological issues, leading the authors to share their experience in real-time systems modeling. Modeling with SysML is more than just drawing the different diagrams. Associated tools offer possibilities to analyze SysML models for specific properties. In this paper, verification addresses both safety and security properties. The TTool model checker inputs the SysML model enriched with safety properties to be verified and outputs an yes/no answer for each property. Security verification checks SysML models against confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity properties. As an illustration of the proposed approach, an aircraft cockpit door control system is modeled in SysML and verified against safety and security properties.

International audience; High-performance aerospace laminated composite structures manufactured from carbon-fibre prepreg are very susceptible to delamination failure under in-flight impact conditions. Much testing has been conducted at small length scales and quasi-static strain-rates to characterise the delamination performance of different material systems and loading scenarios. Testing at this scale and strain-rate is not representative of the failure conditions experienced by a laminate in a real impact event. Full-scale testing has also been conducted, but much of this is not in the open literature due to intellectual property constraints. Testing at this scale is also prohibitively expensive and involves complex failure mechanisms that cause difficulty in the analysis of associated failure behaviour. A novel test is presented which provides a simple, affordable alternative to full-scale testing but which invokes failure at sufficient scale and strain-rate to be representative of real component failure. This test design is experimentally validated through a series of soft-body gelatine impact tests using a light gas-gun facility. A fractographic analysis using scanning-electron microscopy was undertaken to examine microscopic failure behaviour, showing a possible reduction in crack mode-ratio during propagation.

Abstract

International audience; This article proposes a discussion on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to the deployment of QUIC end-to-end from a satellite-operator point-of-view. The deployment of QUIC is an opportunity for improving the quality of experience when exploiting satellite broadband accesses. Indeed, the fast establishment of secured connections reduces the transmission time of short files. Moreover, removing transport-layer performance-enhancing proxies reduces the cost of network infrastructures and improves the integration of satellite systems. However, the congestion and flow controls at end points are not always suitable for satellite communications due to the intrinsic high bandwidth-delay product. Further acceptance of QUIC in satellite systems would be guaranteed if its performance in specific use cases were increased. Based on an emulated platform and on open-source software, this paper proposes values of performance metrics as one piece of the puzzle. The final performance objective requires consensus among the different actors. The objective should at least provide acceptable performance for satellite operators to allow QUIC traffic but reasonable enough to keep QUIC deployable on the Internet.

International audience; Monomer polymerization after the impregnation of reinforcements is a relevant option for the manufacturing of thermoplastic composites by liquid processes (infusion or RTM). In the case of polyamide 6 synthesized by this process, the system composed of monomers, catalyst and activator reacts within the fibrous environment. Therefore, fiber surface chemistry is a crucial parameter because it does not only influence the polymerization and crystallization processes, but it also controls the fiber-matrix adhesion.

Abstract

International audience; This work studies the convergence properties of the mixed non-overlapping domain decomposition method (DDM) commonly named "Latin method". As all DDM, the Latin method is sensitive to nearinterface heterogeneity and irregularity. Using a simple yet fresh point of view, we analyze the role of the Robin parameters as well as of the second level (coarse space) correction-which are a characteristic of the method. In particular, we show how to build a spectrum-motivated coarse space aiming at ensuring fast convergence. 2D and 3D linear elasticity problems involving highly heterogeneous materials confirm the robustness of the spectral coarse space and provide evidence of the scalability of the multiscale Latin method.
