Abstract

International audience; Neutron- and proton-removal cross sections for nuclei around ^132Sn have been systematically measured. The measurements clearly show the effect of the N = 82 closed shells. Model calculations describing all processes leading to single nucleon removal residual nuclei provide a reasonable description of the neutron removal process but clearly overestimate the proton removal ones. This overestimation of the proton removal channels could be explained as due to the presence of short-range correlated neutron-proton pairs in nuclei.

Abstract

The 26Si(p; γ)27P reaction, which might play an important role in the rp process, was studied by the Coulomb Dissociation method. The experiment was performed at GSI, Darmstadt. A secondary 27P ion beam of 500 MeV/nucleon was directed onto a Pb target. From this experiment, the Coulomb Dissociation cross section, σ Coulex , will be deduced and then converted to the photoabsorption cross section, σ photo , and the radiativecapture cross section, σ cap . Also information on the structure of 27P will be obtained. The analysis is in progress.

Abstract

International audience; In this work the astrophysical 26Si(p,γ)27P reaction is studied using the Coulomb dissociation technique. We performed a 27P Coulomb Dissociation experiment at GSI, Darmstadt (28 May-5 June 2007) using the ALADIN-LAND setup which allows complete-kinematic studies. A secondary 27P beam at 498 AMeV impinging a 515mg/cm2 Pb target was used. The relative energy of the outgoing system (26Si+p) is measured obtaining the resonant states of the 27P. Preliminary results show four resonant states measured at 0.36±0.07, 0.88±0.09, 1.5±0.2, 2.3±0.3 MeV and evidence of a higher state at around 3.1 MeV. The preliminary total cross section obtained for relative energies between 0 and 3 MeV has been measured and yields 55±7 mb.

Abstract

The radial evolution of the matter distributions with neutron excess has been investigated at GSI measuring total interaction cross sections for long isotopic chains of medium-mass nuclei. Abstract

The discriminant-analysis method has been applied to optimize the exotic-beam charge recognition in a projectile fragmentation experiment. The experiment was carried out at the GSI using the fragment separator (FRS) to produce and select the relativistic secondary beams, and the ALADIN setup to measure their fragmentation products following collisions with Sn target nuclei. The beams of neutron poor isotopes around 124La and 107Sn were selected to study the isospin dependence of the limiting temperature of heavy nuclei by comparing with results for stable 124Sn projectiles. A dedicated detector to measure the projectile charge upstream of the reaction target was not used, and alternative methods had to be developed. The presented method, based on the multivariate discriminant analysis, allowed to increase the efficacy of charge recognition up to about 90%, which was about 20% more than achieved with the simple scalar methods., Comment: 6 pages, 7 eps figures, elsart, submitted to Nucl. Abstract

International audience; The projectile fragmentation of 92Mo at Elab = 500 A MeV has been studied at the European large-scale facility SIS/FRS at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany. The produced isotopes have been identified in Z and A numbers by using the Brho–ΔE–TOF method. The results of the isotopic production cross sections will be presented. The data will be used to test the predictive power of the empirical parametrizations (EPAX) and fragmentation models (ABRABLA) to determine production cross sections. The measured data provide a precise knowledge of the expected production rates of secondary beams of N simeq Z nuclei via projectile fragmentation.

Abstract

NESTER; One-nucleon removal reactions at relativistic energies have been used as spectroscopic tool to obtain information about the ground state properties of several neutron-rich isotopes in the sd-shell. Using the FRS at GSI, the longitudinal momentum distributions of the emerging fragments after one-nucleon removal cross-sections were measured. The relative contributions of the remaining fragments in their ground and excited states have been determined from measurements of gamma rays in coincidence with the longitudinal momentum distributions. The interesting case of 23O will be directly address. The interpretation of our experimental results in the framework of a simple theoretical model will favours a spin and parity assignment of 1/2+ for the 23O ground state in agreement with shell model predictions.

Abstract

The isotopic distributions of fragments produced in the spallation. of uranium are strongly influenced by the fission of the excited prefragments, highly fissile nuclei. The competition between fission and evaporation around the doubly-magic nucleus Pb is discussed. The light fragments from Fe beam are produced with a strong enhancement of even-even nuclei compared to the odd-odd in the region of nuclei with equal number of neutrons and protons, N similar to Z. This staggering in the production of light fragments is not observed in the production of heavy fragments, and is in contradiction with the basis of the statistical model of deexcitation of a hot nucleus. Pairing interaction as a function of the excitation energy and as a function of the isospin of the nucleus are questioned.

Abstract

The neutron-rich isotope 136Sb has been produced following the relativistic projectile fission of 238U in an experiment performed at the Fragment Separator at GSI, Darmstadt. Delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of the fission products has been performed after isotope separation. A new isomeric state in 136Sb has been populated, and its lifetime measured as T1/2 = 565(50) ns. Realistic and empirical shell-model calculations have been performed and are compared to the experimental observables.

Abstract

Production cross sections of more than 270 isotopes ranging from Z = 59 to Z = 82 were measured in the reaction 208Pb(1 GeV A)+Cu. The method of identifying the projectile fragments and evaluating the production cross sections is described. The experimental data are compared with a modern version of the abrasion-ablation model and with the empirical parameterization EPAX. Apart from deviations in the details they both show an overall good agreement. The cross sections of those fragments which are produced by the removal of protons only test the lower part of the excitation energy distribution. For the first time, the four-proton removal channel could be observed.

Abstract

Projectile fragmentation of U-238 in lead target was investigated at a bombarding energy of 750 A MeV. Isotopic production cross sections of about 250 different projectile fragments in the element range Z = 30-53 were measured with the FRagment Separator (FRS). The magnetic selection and the kinematical analysis of the measured isotopes allowed to disentangle fission and fragmentation residues. The mass loss of these residues indicates a violent collision where a large amount of energy is dissipated. The position of the fragmentation corridor defined by the measured residues aas used to determine an effective proton-evaporation barrier.

Abstract

Fragments of relativistic 750 A.MeV U-projectiles were investigated by using the fragment separator FRS for magnetic selection of reaction products including ray-tracing and ΔE-ToF techniques. For elements between Ge and Sb, measurements of isotopic yield distributions and velocities revealed three processes: fragmentation, low-energy fission, and high-energy fission. The last of these regimes is presently reported. First and second moments of distributions of mass numbers, atomic numbers and velocities of the corresponding fragments allowed us to identify 10143Tc56 as the most probable fragment of a high energy symmetric fission reaction. Moreover, we could deduce a hypothetical mean fissioning fragmentation product 208Rn and its highly excited pre-fragmentation parent 227Ra produced in a primary abrasion reaction at an excitation energy of about 290 MeV.

Abstract

In an experiment performed at the FRS of GSI, we measured total interaction cross sections for 7 Be, 8 B, and 9 C, one-proton-removal cross sections for 8 B and 9 C as well as two-proton-removal cross sections for 9 C on targets ranging from carbon to lead at an energy of 285 MeV/nucleon. In addition, we performed measurements at 142 MeV/nucleon for 8 B. The experimental results are compared to different calculations. Glauber-type calculations with different model·density distributions show that, down to incident energies of about 50 MeV/nucleon, total interaction cross-section measurements with light targets are not sensitive to an extended proton distribution in 8 B. However, at lower incident energies, a tail in the proton density distribution is needed to explain the total interaction cross sections. Total interaction cross-section measurements with high-Z targets in the present experiment show a significant increase of the cross sections due to low-lying electromagnetic strength.

Abstract

Projectile fission of 238U was investigated at a bombarding energy of 750 A·MeV using Pb and Be targets. The fully stripped forward emitted fragments from Ti to Cs were analyzed with the Fragment Separator (FRS) and unambiguously identified by their energy-loss and time-of-flight. The magnetic selection of the largest momenta acted as a trigger of the low-energy fission component. More than a hundred new nuclear species were identified including the 78Ni, for which a cross-section of 300 pb was measured.

Abstract

The projectile fragmentation in peripheral nuclear collisions was studied using ≈ 1 GeV·A of 208 Pb and 238 U from the SIS at GSI, impinging on a copper target. Lead and thallium isotopes from the fragmentation of 208 Pb as well as uranium and protactinium isotopes from 238 U, were selected by the fragment separator FRS. In contrast to the fragmentation of 208 Pb, the cross sections for the production of heavy fragments from 238 U are strongly reduced by fission. The measured isotopic yields may be explained quantitatively by calculations in the framework of the abrasion-ablation model, if fission is allowed to compete with particle evaporation in the deexcitation of the prefragments.

Abstract

This paper reviews two experiments performed at GSI and GANIL. Using a primary beam of 58 Ni at 650 MeV/nucleon impinging on a beryllium target, production cross sections of proton-rich fragments from projectile fragmentation have been measured at the projectile-fragment separator FRS at GSI. The production rates measured demonstrate that counting rates much higher than expected can be obtained at the proton drip line. The results from spectroscopy measurements show that no Thomas-Ehrmann effect is present in our data which means that the decay energies and masses can be well predicted by using e.g. the IMME. The secondary reactions evidence a slight increase of the interaction cross sections when approaching the proton drip line. Finally, in an experiment performed at the SISSI/LISE facility at GANIL using a 78 Kr primary beam, we have observed the 5 new isotopes 60 Ga, 64 As, 69,70 Kr, and 74 Sr. However, we have not found any evidence for 69 Br which was reported to be observed with a few counts at MSU. These new findings change our understanding of the path and of the ending point of the rp process.

Abstract

A method for measuring the cross sections for the neutron removal from relativistic secondary projectiles by means of a two-stage magnetic spectrometer is presented. Its application to the 1n- and 2n-removal from 56 Ni and 52 Fe at 470 A ·MeV in an aluminum target is described. The results are compared to the intranuclear-cascade plus evaporation model and to the statistical abrasion-ablation model. The influence of the nuclear surface on the few-nucleon removal reactions is discussed. The neutron-removal cross sections are combined with total charge-changing cross sections to obtain the total interaction cross sections of 56 Ni and 52 Fe.

Abstract

Projectile fission of 238U was investigated at a bombarding energy of 750 A·MeV using a Pb target. Forward emitted fragments from 80Zn up to 155Ce were analyzed with the Fragment Separator (FRS) and unambigously identified by their energy-loss and time-of-flight. The magnetic selection of the largest momenta acted as a trigger of the low-energy fission component. More than forty new nuclear species were identified. The related isotopic production cross-sections are presented.

Abstract

We have measured production cross-sections of the new neutron-rich isotopes58Ti,61V,63Cr,66Mn,69Fe,71Co and neighbouring isotopes that have been identified as projectile fragments from reactions between a 500 MeV/u86Kr beam and a beryllium target. The isotope identification was performed with the zero-degree magnetic spectrometer FRS at GSI, using in addition time-of-flight and energy-loss measurements. The experimental production cross-sections for the new nuclides and neighbouring isotopes are compared with an empirical parametrization. The resulting prospects for reaching even more neutron-rich isotopes, such as the doubly-magic nuclide78Ni, are discussed.

Abstract

18 C has been produced as a projectile fragment in the interaction of a 60 MeV/u 22 Ne beam with a thick beryllium + carbon target. Using the LISE spectrometer of GANIL tuned according to the PFIS method allowed an unprecedented measurement of its β-delayed γ spectroscopy, along with redetermination of half-life and β-neutron branching ratio. A partial decay scheme is proposed. A comparison with theoretical predictions provides a qualitative understanding of the decay of 18 C.

Abstract

The three nuclei 17B, 14Be, 19C have been produced and separated by the LISE spectrometer at GANIL. Half-lives and beta-delayed neutron multiplicities have been determined for these nuclei. The study of 17B has allowed us to observe for the first time the beta-delayed four-neutron decay mode with a branching ratio p4n=(4±3)×10−3.
