Hybrid circuit breaker (HCB) has shown good performance for interrupting dc fault current. However, a massive number of IGBTs in series is needed. These will lead to high costs and significant difficulty in balancing IGBT dynamic voltage. This paper proposes a bidirectional hybrid circuit breaker based on a cascaded half-bridge submodule structure to reduce the overall costs and implementation difficulty of HCB. The number of IGBTs is reduced by 50%, and the operating speed is fast enough. A model of a four-terminal modular multilevel converter (MMC) system with a proposed hybrid circuit breaker in different stages is developed to describe the fault blocking process more clearly. This paper proposes a delta-connected Modular Multilevel STATCOM with partially rated storage (PRS-STATCOM), capable of providing both reactive, and active power support. The purpose is to provide short-term energy storage enabled grid support services such as inertial, and frequency response, either alongside or temporarily instead of standard STATCOM voltage support. The topology proposed here contains two types of sub-modules (SM) in each phase-leg: standard sub-modules (STD-SMs), and energy storage element sub-modules (ESE-SMs) with a dc-dc interface converter between the SM capacitor, and the ESE. A control structure has been developed that allows energy transfer between the SM capacitor, and the ESE resulting in active power exchange between the converter, and the grid. Injecting $\text{3}^{rd}$ harmonic current into the converter waveforms can be used to increase the amount of power that can be extracted from the ESE-SMs, and so reduce the required ESE-SMs fraction in each phase-leg. Simulation results demonstrate that for three selected active power ratings, 1 pu, $\frac{2}{3}$ pu, and $\frac{1}{3}$ pu, the fraction of SMs that need be converted to ESE-SMs are only 69%, 59% & 38%. Conventionally, the current flow control and DC fault protection issues of HVDC grids are supposed to be solved by the DC current flow controller (CFC) and DC circuit breaker (DCCB) separately, which may result in a high capital cost. This paper proposes a CFC topology with DC fault current limiting and interrupting capabilities. The topology and operating principle of the CFC are presented with theoretical analysis. The control strategies under normal and fault conditions are described. In order to reduce the use of IGBTs, an H-bridge inter-line CFC with fault current limiting capability is further proposed based on the proposed CFC. The proposed CFCs are tested in PSCAD/EMTDC. In this paper, an advanced surface-grafting method is reported to improve the high-temperature performance of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) membranes. The leakage conductivity of the surface-grafted films decreases by 98% at 85 °C. The decline in the leakage loss contributes to the 99% charge-efficiency at 85 °C. The dielectric constant increases by 7%. The DC breakdown strength grows by 43% at 85 °C. The maximum energy storage density goes up from 1.45 to 2.77 J/cm3 at 85 °C. The surface-grafted BOPP film exhibits outstanding energy density and charge-discharge efficiency characteristics. The focus of this paper is on analyzing the impact of conservation voltage reduction in the presence of active devices such as solar photovoltaic (PV) and developing controls that leverage these distributed energy resources. An event-driven predictive approach for real-time volt/volt-ampere reactive (VAR) optimization, along with a local two-level adaptive volt/VAR droop-based control algorithm for advanced distribution management systems, is introduced. The methodology covers aggregated and autonomous controls under different timescale operations, including the impact and effect of unpredicted events such as cloud transients on PV power production. Besides, the control schemes include the uncertainties in PV power generation and load power demand. The proposed methodology is validated in a real-time framework using the real-time digital simulator platform through co-simulation with models based on Python and OpenDSS (Open Distribution System Simulator). The developed methodology is tested on the modified IEEE 123-feeder test system. The results reveal that the proposed methodology works well in the presence of high penetrations of PV power, produces significant energy savings, and mitigates over-/undervoltage problems. Conventionally, the converter of switched reluctance motor (SRM) is fed by the uncontrollable diode bridge rectifier (DBR), which leads to a low grid-side power factor (PF) and high current total harmonic distortion (THD). In this paper, an alternative solution for the grid-connected high-speed SRM drive system with improved PF is proposed. In the proposed drive system, the three-level active front end (AFE) is connected in cascade with the midpoint converter for SRM operation. A centralized strategy, which controls the AFE and SRM together, is proposed to govern the motor speed and grid-side PF by regulating the real power and reactive power of the system, respectively. Specifically, the real power, reactive power, and the voltage balancing of split capacitors are controlled by the model predictive directed power control (MP-DPC) algorithm, which significantly reduces the control complexity and guarantees the fast dynamic response. Consequently, satisfying speed regulation, high PF, low current THD, and bi-directional power-transfer capability are achieved. A new transformer-less three-level grid-tied inverter is proposed in this article. By employing the switched-capacitor (SC) modules, a new topology is derived. The proposed topology has some features which are high efficiency, the capability of voltage boosting without utilization of any additional boost stage, and suppressing the leakage current by using common grounded strategy. In this article, a peak current control is employed to generate the gate pulses of power semiconductor switches and adjustment of both active and reactive powers. By doing so, the grid injected current is controlled and adjusted to have a proper quality. The operation modes, design consideration, and a comparison with some recently proposed grid-connected topologies are done through this paper. The paper examines the possibility to exploit the inductance of wound aluminum foil capacitors in order to realize an integrated component. Objective is the design and construction of an integrated inductor/capacitor to filter harmonic modulations as an alternative to the conventional passive filter, consisting of capacitor and inductor as discrete components with the prospect of reducing size, material and consequently costs. The principle functioning of the integrated component resulting from the position the supply terminals are placed on the aluminum foils is being demonstrated. An analysis of technical and geometric parameters leads through a calculation scheme to the design of such an integrated component. Finally, the construction of a manual winding machine enables the wrinkle free winding of the four foils on a central core to produce a pilot model operational at 400 V with multiple access terminals providing hence diverse experimentation possibilities. Most significant result is the measured current frequency characteristic of the pilot model revealing clearly its series resonant behavior with a quality factor close to ten, well comparable to values of conventional industrial filters indicating thus at this stage reasonable prospects for such an integrated component to operate as a filter in the grid absorbing harmonic modulations. Geomagnetic Disturbances (GMDs) are the result of solar storms or a high-altitude nuclear detonation. On the power systems, they might lead to the flow of quasi-DC currents referred as Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs). These currents cause the AC current offset that may drive the power transformers into saturation. This leads to large draw of reactive power, causes transformer internal heating and increased noise level, damage to shunt capacitors, harmonic filters and maloperation of power system protection equipment. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art of the GIC mitigation and elimination strategies and their respective limitations. It also introduces converter-based strategies as a new avenue of power system protection against GICs by presenting novel strategies that involve the integration of the proposed schemes between the neutral and ground of power transformers. One of the proposed schemes is a contribution to the approaches solely focused towards GIC mitigation, whereas, the other provides a variety of grid-support functions in addition to GIC elimination. The simulations performed in a Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (C-HIL) environment verify the proposed schemes as a promising alternative to the current GIC mitigation approaches. This paper focuses on the effects of the nano Polyhedral oligomericsilsesquioxanes (POSS) with three similar molecular structures on the thermal and electrical properties of polypropylene (PP) films, aiming to propose a comprehensive modification method. After doping with micro amount of nano POSS, the crystallinity and regularity of films are elevated. Correspondingly, PP with optimized microstructure has the lowest conductivity, due to the interaction between the nanoparticles and the matrix, as well as the strong binding force of the crystal region to the carriers. The loss of the sample is restricted, especially in the low frequency region, since the combined effect of polarization and conduction. The DC breakdown strength of the modified PP is higher than that of the PP, with an increase of above 20% at 25–85 °C. Based on quantum chemical calculations, the energy level distributions are analyzed. By selecting appropriate additives, deep trap sites can be introduced to catch carriers, preventing the breaks of polymer molecular chains. Full converter-based wind power generation (FCWG, e.g., a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)), though normally considered to be decoupled from the external power grid can be actuated as an inertia source to suppress modal resonance in wind generation penetrated power systems by installing auxiliary resonance controllers (ARCs). In this paper, three possible options for ARC installation are first identified based on some derivations of the conventional control model of FCWG. The damping support mechanism of ARC is revealed, a suitable and generic configuration structure of ARC is then established, and optimal parameter tuning is conducted on the basis of this ARC configuration. The three ARC alternatives are equipped to contribute to damping by utilizing the potential energy and dynamics hidden in different inertia source components (i.e., the wind turbine rotor and DC capacitor, respectively) of FCWG. Both modal analysis and simulation results validate the effectiveness of the three proposed ARCs in suppressing modal resonance and improving system oscillation stability. Most importantly, extensive comparison investigations are carried out to fully evaluate the pros and cons of the three ARCs and thus provide constructive application guidance for system operators and wind farm owners. With increasing penetration of solar PV, some distribution feeders are experiencing highly variable net-load flows and even reverse flows. To optimize distribution systems under such conditions, the scheduling of mechanical devices, such as OLTCs and capacitor banks, needs to take into account forecasted solar PV and actual grid conditions. However, these legacy switching assets are operated on a daily or hourly timescale, due to the wear and tear associated with mechanical switching, which makes them unsuitable for real-time control. Therefore, there is a natural timescale-separation between these slower mechanical assets and the responsive nature of inverter-based resources. In this paper, we present a network admissible convex formulation for holistically scheduling controllable grid assets to position voltage optimally against solar PV. An optimal hourly schedule is presented that utilizes mechanical resources to position the predicted voltages close to nominal values, while minimizing the use of inverter-based resources (i.e., DERs), making them available for control at a faster time-scale (after the uncertainty reveals itself). A convex, inner approximation of the OPF problem is adapted to a mixed-integer linear program that minimizes voltage deviations from nominal (i.e., maximizes voltage margins). The resulting OPF solution respects all the network constraints and is, hence, robust against modeling simplifications.Simulation based analysis on IEEE distribution feeders validates the approach. This article proposes a novel bidirectional isolated dc–dc converter with high voltage gain and wide input voltage, which can be applied to bidirectional power conversion systems. The proposed topology is composed of a bidirectional buck-boost converter and a forward-flyback converter; it has the advantage of higher voltage gain and has continuous current characteristic of the low-side port in step-up and step-down mode. In addition, the proposed topology also has the function of leakage inductance energy recovery, which can improve the efficiency of the converter, reduce the voltage surges on switches, and have the characteristics of zero voltage switching on certain switches. Finally, this paper implements a 500-W bidirectional dc–dc converter to verify the feasibility of the proposed topology. The low-side voltage of the proposed topology is 24, 48, and 55 V; the maximum efficiency in step-up mode are 94.2%, 95.6% and 96.9%, and the maximum efficiency are 92.6%, 94.2% and 94.5% in the step-down mode, respectively. Isolated, zero-voltage-switching dc–dc converter topologies represent attractive solutions in the continuous run toward higher switching frequencies, allowing more compact power supplies. Among them, the asymmetrical half-bridge flyback converter represents an interesting option, featuring simple duty-cycle control at constant switching frequency, as opposed to the popular LLC converter. The majority of papers dealing with this topology consider an approximated voltage gain similar to that of an isolated buck converter operating in continuous conduction mode, i.e., proportional to the duty cycle and, practically, load independent. On the contrary, the true voltage gain is nonmonotonic at high duty-cycle values. Anytime the converter is designed for a resonant operation, as is advisable to eliminate any reverse recovery problem of the rectifier diode, the voltage gain not only increases, but also becomes a function of the switching frequency. This article investigates the converter's voltage gain in detail, deriving a theoretical framework capable of capturing its real behavior and dependencies. Using a practical relay model, in which an energy transmitter (ET) transmits energy to a sensory node S and an information receiver D, information freshness or age of information (AoI) under outdated-channel-state-information (oCSI) severity and line-of-sight (LoS) power is examined in this paper. The sensory node—equipped with a finite-size-battery capacitor—harvests energy from the ET to sustain its operation. Rician fading under non-oCSI and oCSI environments is employed to study the AoI, in which benefits and severity of LoS power and oCSI will be elaborated. The proposed AoI results exactly reduce to existing ones under Rayleigh fading, which validates this work. Simulation results are additionally deployed to validate the proposed AoI results. One of the impacts of harmonic resonances in wind parks is to overload wind park components. The process of identifying a problematic component may be time-consuming due to the number of scenarios and different components (capacitors, transformers, cables and generators) that must be analyzed. In this context, this paper develops a first-screening approach to narrow down the number of scenarios that must be studied in detail. It first identifies that the capacitor bank is the most critical component. Then, it uses the operating limits of the capacitor bank and the harmonic distortions measured at the wind park entrance to obtain a chart that maps the problematic operating conditions of the park. Detailed investigations are needed only if the wind park condition is in specific regions of the chart. The proposed chart is attractive for practical applications as it is obtained with a simple equation, without the need to run any computer simulation, and can be consulted with few information from the wind park that is readily available to engineers. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) based high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system is one of the important development trends of DC power grid. After fault isolation, the traditional reclosing method of MMC-HVDC system is directly reclosing DC circuit breaker (DCCB). Once the fault point still exists, DCCB will be tripped again. This method will make the DC system suffer from the secondary strike of fault in a short time, and seriously endanger the service life of DCCB. In order to overcome the drawbacks of the traditional reclosing schemes, this paper proposes a novel adaptive reclosing scheme based on pulse injection from parallel energy absorption module. When dc fault current is interrupted by DCCB, the fault energy stored in current-limiting reactors (CLR) and dc lines is transferred to energy absorption module automatically. By switching on IGBTs embedded in absorption module for a short time, a voltage pulse is injected directly into the faulty line without interference from CLR. Then the nature of fault is identified and the fault distance can also be calculated in the case of permanent faults. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed reclosing scheme. DC transformer is an essential equipment for formation of multi-voltage-level DC grid. This paper proposes a novel non-isolated Boost-type alternate arm DC transformer (Boost-AADCT) for medium- and high-voltage level DC grid application. The Boost-AADCT is comprised of three submodule-cascaded arms, two thyristor-cascaded director switches, and two buffer capacitors. Bidirectional power transmission is achieved by alternatively charging and discharging of the intermediate arm following the Boost principle, while the pulsating power component caused by intermittent transmission is actively smoothened by grid-side buffer subcircuits formed by the buffer capacitors and grid-side arms. The active power buffering method increases the tolerance range of voltage ripple of the buffer capacitor, and the required energy storage capacity is resultantly reduced. Circuit configuration, operation principle, and mathematical model are first introduced. Then, the control strategy is proposed, the main circuit parameters are designed, and bidirectional fault-blocking capability is analyzed. Comparison with other DC-DC converters shows that the Boost-AADCT significantly reduces the requirement of semiconductors and has relatively lower synthetic cost. Impulse corona characteristics are very important for the analysis of overvoltage along overhead transmission lines. For DC line, the space charge due to normal corona may affect the impulse corona characteristics. The paper develops a circuit for combined application of DC and impulse voltage to measure the effect of space charges on impulse corona characteristics along DC conductor. Based on the circuit, a test platform with a corona cage was established. By measuring the q-u curve, the impulse corona onset voltages under different DC pre-voltages were obtained. It was proposed that the space charges would affect the corona onset voltage. The space charges of the opposite polarity would weaken the corona and reduce the impulse corona loss, which is beneficial to the overvoltage wave propagation. While the space charges of the same polarity would enhance the corona and increase the impulse corona loss, which is not conducive to the overvoltage wave propagation. In addition, the influence of wave front time and conductor radius on the impulse corona characteristics was measured. Recently the hybrid multi-port DC circuit breaker (MP-DCCB) is becoming popular in protecting HVDC grids, thanks to their reduction of power electronics devices. In this paper, an enhanced multi-port current-limiting DCCB (MP-CLCB) for multiple line protection is proposed. The integrated fault current limiter (FCL) inside the MP-CLCB can clear the fault faster with slightly increased costs. To reduce the energy dissipation requirement for the surge arresters caused by the newly added current-limiting path, an energy transfer path which provides a loop with the inductors during the current decay stage is designed. The theoretical analysis of the pre-charging, current-limiting, fault interruption and energy dissipation of the MP-CLCB is carried out. Moreover, the design principles of the energy dissipation and the key parameters of the MP-CLCB are provided. The proposed approaches are verified through simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC. The results show that the MP-CLCB can replace multiple DCCBs, accelerate the fault current interruption and reduce the energy dissipation requirement for the surge arresters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, the idea of combining both thyristors and IGBTs in a voltage-source converter (VSC) structure has gained significant research interests for HVDC applications. The main objectives of deriving these topologies are to achieve forced-commutation of thyristors, increased efficiency, reduced energy-storage requirement and dc-fault tolerance besides retaining the VSC control flexibility. A novel topology named ‘thyristor-augmented modular bridge converter’ (TAMBC) is proposed in this paper. Each TAMBC phase contains four chain-links comprising of series-connected stacks. Each stack contains a parallel connection of an IGBT-based submodule-branch and a thyrsitor-branch. A control technique is developed that allows the main current to flow primarily through the thyrsitor-branch to achieve higher efficiency. In each phase of TAMBC, two chain-links generate the required ac voltage in the first half-cycle and are bypassed through thyrsitor-branch during the next half-cycle. Consequently, it enables current distribution among the chain-links resulting in reduced capacitors size and enhanced efficiency. The ability of TAMBC-HVDC systems to function over a wide operating range, to ride-through ac faults and to provide independent active and reactive power control are verified using PSCAD. DC system protection is more challenging than that for AC system due to the rapid rate of rise of the fault current and absence of natural current zero-crossing in DC systems. Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) in DC systems is a promising technology to reduce the fault current level and the rate of rise of the fault current, and also SFCLs have no resistance during normal operation. In this paper, the behaviors of an SFCL coil are investigated under both low impedance and high impedance fault conditions in DC systems. In the low impedance fault condition system, the SFCL coil performs effective limitation of the fault current level under different prospective fault current levels. The application of SFCLs with limited inductance in the DC system can be a potential solution to effectively suppress the fault current under low impedance short-circuit faults. As the output power of wind farm is fluctuating, it is one of the important ways to improve the schedule ability of wind power generation to predict the output power of wind farm. The operation mode of tracking planned output takes the planned value issued by the grid dispatching as the control basis of wind power generation. This operation mode is easy to control, which not only meets the needs of power grid dispatching, but also improves the reliability and controllability of new energy generation. This paper introduces the traditional PI control strategy of SMES and combines the advantages of SMES and the characteristics of application scenarios, and introduces sliding mode variable structure control into SMES. Through simulation and comparison of two different control modes, it is verified that SMES adopting sliding mode variable structure control have the advantages of fast response speed and strong robustness, which can make the wind farm output stable power according to the planned value. The penetration of photovoltaics (PVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing in active distribution networks (ADN), which may lead to severe voltage violation problems. This paper proposes a two-stage real-time Volt/Var control method to mitigate fast voltage violations. In the first stage, hourly on-load tap changer (OLTC) and capacitor banks (CBs) are scheduled based on the optimal power flow method. The optimization problem is formulated as a mixed-integer second-order cone programming (MISOCP) which can be effectively solved. In the second stage, a data-driven network partition method is proposed to select critical bus and assess the voltage violation risk of each control area, followed by the intra-day dispatch of EVs. Based on the partition results, reactive power of PVs and EVs is controlled in real-time to mitigate voltage violations. Considering the suddenly active power drop of PVs, a rule-based control strategy coordinating PVs and CBs is proposed to improve the reactive power reserve in ADN. The proposed approach is tested on the IEEE 33-bus and 123-bus distribution networks and simulation results verify the effectiveness both in network partition and real-time voltage control. A large number of distributed energy resources (DERs) integrate into the distribution network, which changes the power flow, increases the power fluctuations, and complicates the scheduling of the distribution network. To cope with that, a multitimescale scheduling method, which considers the demand response as well as user satisfaction, is proposed in this paper. First, in the day-ahead stage, both the generation-side and demand-side are combined to minimize the operating costs and reduce the impact of DERs. Second, in the real-time stage, the model predictive control method is introduced, smoothing the power fluctuations and maximizing the consumed renewable energy. Finally, the user comprehensive satisfaction is considered, ensuring the users’ benefit and improving the flexibility of users to participate in scheduling while shifting electricity demands. By optimizing the generation-side and demand-side on both day-ahead and real-time timescales, the proposed method can improve the operation status for the distribution network effectively while ensuring the interests of users.
